W The National Trucking Week (September 6-12) is a special occasion to acknowledge the contributions of all members of Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Congratulations!
Welcome to the September 2015 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the award-winning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Effective September 1st, the rules of the road will be updated to help keep Ontarians safe. Changes include tougher penalties for distracted driving, new rules to protect cyclists and measures to ensure the safety of tow truck drivers and children riding school buses. The new legislation builds on action that the province has already taken to improve road safety, including making booster seats mandatory, ensuring every person wears a seatbelt, introducing the Graduated Licensing System for novice drivers, establishing stiffer penalties for aggressive driving and excess speeding, bringing in tougher impaired driving laws, and banning handheld devices while driving. We welcome all these measures aimed to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on Ontario’s roads. The National Trucking Week 2015 will be held this month from September 6-12. This week is a special occasion to acknowledge and spotlight the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take this opportunity to congratulate and thank everyone who has chosen to build a career in the trucking industry, make valuable contributions and raise the industry profile. Safety Drives Us - the community group focused on improving road safety awareness in Ontario of which Road Today is a founding member has published an informative resource ‘Welcome to Ontario’. Translated and printed in 5 languages including English, Punjabi, Arabic, Chinese and Spanish, this brochure is now widely available through many regional police services, school boards, settlement agencies, libraries amongst other organizations. We thank all stakeholders for contributing towards creation of this community resource benefitting all Ontarians especially newcomers. Kids are now back to school following the summer break and we wish all students, parents and teachers a fabulous learning year filled with happy moments. However, we need to remember that more children will be walking and biking on our roads as they attend school. Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack the skills to negotiate traffic safely. Motorists need to take special care while driving and especially around the bus stop and school zone areas. Please remember that road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone plays a significant role. We always welcome your feedback and input. Feel free to connect through our social media platforms on Twitter and Facebook. Meanwhile, enjoy the last few weeks of summer, stay in touch and shall see you next month! Manan Gupta Editor

PACCAR MX-13 ENGINE PRODUCED IN NORTH AMERICA
T
he 100,000th PACCAR MX-13 engine produced for North America was recently presented to Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) which will operate the landmark engine in a Peterbilt Model 579, Peterbilt Motors Company announced. “PACCAR’s MX-13 engine continues to achieve new levels of success through exceptional fuel economy, reliability and performance. It is the ideal engine for Peterbilt’s aerodynamic Model 579 which is a leader in fuel efficiency, quality and overall value,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “Peterbilt is very pleased that such a respected customer as Kenan Advantage Group will be operating this milestone engine. They were one of the first fleets to order an MX-13 in 2010 and have been a satisfied and loyal customer ever since.” The engine was presented to KAG President Bruce Blaise and Vice President – Fleet Services Bruce Stockton during an event at the state-of-the-art PACCAR engine plant in Columbus, Miss., where the MX-13 is manufactured for North American markets. They were joined by Dean Martin, President of Sales for AMG Peterbilt of Columbus. The PACCAR MX-13 incorporates industry-leading design features and manufacturing technologies developed by PACCAR through more than 50 years of engine engineering and production experience. PACCAR MX engines have been powering DAF (a PACCAR company) trucks throughout the world and over 400,000 engines are in operation today. The engine accumulated more than 50 million test miles through rigorous and severe conditions before it was introduced in North America. The versatile engine is popular across Peterbilt’s broad range of customer applications and can be spec’d with up to 500 horsepower and 1,850 ft.-lb. of torque. This power range, combined with excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability, durability, lightweight design and low cost of ownership makes it an ideal choice for both over-the-road and vocational applications. The 450,000 square-foot PACCAR engine facility, which opened in 2010, now has more than 500 employees and earned consecutive Manufacturing Leadership awards from Frost & Sullivan in the past two RT years.

Driver and Vehicle Licence Fee Increases

river and vehicle licence fee increases come into effect on September 1, 2015 in order to help maintain Ontario’s road safety, support key services and improve crucial transportation infrastructure. Fees for driver licences, renewals, replacements and commercial permits are among those increasing. These changes support the recommendations of the Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services to cover the rising costs of maintaining provincial roads, bridges and highways, enhance cost recovery for the delivery of driver and vehicle licensing services, and to support quality public services Ontarians rely on every day. Changing Lanes Safely With any vehicle, it is important to make sure the lane is clear before changing lanes. When driving a large vehicle, you have to be even more careful because you have large blind spots that must be checked before changing lanes.
O
ther drivers may not know about your blind spots and try to drive by you before you change lanes. Ensuring that other drivers are not speeding up and trying to get by you is part of driving defensively. Remember, on multi-lane roads, change lanes one at a time when you can only rely on mirrors in your vehicle. Never change lanes at intersections or over solid pavement markings. Even when no one is on the road for miles, it is wise to signal turns and lane changes. If you signal every time, it becomes second nature and helps keep you safe and collision-free. Before you make a lane change: • Scan the road ahead and check to see what other drivers are doing (watch out for pedestrians about to step on to the road, other vehicles reducing speed, and drivers about to merge across your lane). • Keep an eye on the brake lights of vehicles in front of you. Look for lights 3 or 4 vehicles ahead as they can be a good indicator of trouble. • Watch out for other vehicles changing lanes and other drivers coming up fast behind you. • Never change lanes at intersections or over solid pavement markings. • To safely change lanes, follow these steps: • Check the mirrors for traffic to the side and any other traffic that could interfere with the lane change. • Turn on your signal to indicate the direction in which you will move. • Check the mirrors again and the blind spot looking down beside the cab of the vehicle (or shoulder check depending on the vehicle). • If it’s clear, change lanes. Leave the turn signal on until the vehicle is completely in the new lane.

Trucks Recession Proof Your Purchase N
obody wants to hear the “R” word, and signs are all pointing to a Canadian recession. So why does the Finance Minister, Joe Oliver continue to say that Canada is not in a recession? The technical definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth and until the June figures are released at the end of August, we cannot confirm or deny the “R” word. Statistics Canada shows GDP has contracted every month since January and the Bank of Canada offered a dimmer view of the economy. So is it 2008 all over again? Should fleet and owner-operators save a penny where they can? The Finance Minister and supporters of his view see the Canadian economy as sluggish rather than in a recession. Joe Oliver believes the year will end with positive growth. The optimism stems from key differences from past recessions, consumer spending is good, housing sales remain strong, the Bank of Canada cut rates that lead to supportive financial conditions and according to the Global Automakers of Canada (GAC) auto sales were solid once again. Plus, truckers can ride on the coat tails of a strengthening US

economy. Truckers today face different challenges than the recession of 2008 because they were not getting the mileage revenue they needed to be profitable. The low Canadian dollar, while attractive for exports and potentially stimulating the economy at .76 US, it is forcing some fleet and owner-operators to opt out of purchasing new equipment for used trucking equipment. In 2014, the average purchase price of a Volvo 670 was $130,000, with the low Canadian dollar, the exact same truck costs $165,000 today. Whether you are considering a new or used truck, always look at the total cost of ownership. The less expensive truck may not be the better option in the long run. What works for one owner-operator, may not work for another. The last few years have seen healthy sales, year over year increases and the ability to meet yearly sales targets for new truck sales according to Mr. Rick Mallais, Volvo Sales Manager at Vision Truck Centre. New, safer, better, more fuel efficient and more comfortable trucks are all key points to driver retention according to Vince Tarantini, President, Carmen Transportation Group.
roadtoday www.roadtoday.com
How much do I really save if I buy a used truck? In Autotrader, a 2014 Volvo 670 sells for $119,000 with 250k - 350k (kilometers). With a 10% down payment over a 4- year term, the monthly payments are approximately $2600+HST. Anew 2015 Volvo 670 truck sells for $165,000. With a 10% down payment over a 5 year term, the monthly payments are approximately $2900+HST. Is the $300 per month saving worth it? The used truckmay have some factory warranty left on it, while the new one may include an extended warranty. Truck depreciation occurs in the early years, and this impacts the resale value.Buying a new truck will have more resale value than a used truck. Resale is important because at the end of term, the owner-operatorwants the resale value to act as the 10% down payment towardsthe purchase of a new truck.
Reasons to Purchase a New Truck • • • • • •
More low-cost financing options Decreased downtime and repair Higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions You are getting a clean history The best warranty comes with a new truck Packed with new safety features Reasons to Purchase a used Truck
• • • •
Repairs are cheaper Attractive for local haulers Serves as an inexpensive back-up truck Affordable entry to transport business
Less known reasons to Purchase a New Truck • • •
Driver retention Some carriers will not permit older units in their owneroperator fleets Long haul carriers prefer to hire owner/operators with newer trucks
Less known reasons to Purchase a Used Truck • • •
Wider access to used part sourcing for repairs Depreciation is the highest in the first few years, so you are financing a smaller value Buying a truck from a wellknown and reputable fleet means a better chance of owning a quality truck with a solid preventative maintenance program

Kenworth’s Predictive Cruise Control Now in Production for T680s and T880s with PACCAR MX-13 Engine
K
enworth Predictive Cruise Control is now in production for new Kenworth T680s and T880s specified with the PACCAR MX-13 engine. Available as a factoryinstalled option, the new Kenworth system combines cruise control with GPS to help deliver optimal fuel economy.* “By anticipating the terrain ahead, Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control ensures that the PACCAR MX-13 engine and the transmission are in the most efficient operating mode to increase fuel economy,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer. Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control is available with Eaton UltraShift and Eaton Fuller Advantage automated and manual transmissions. “Kenworth actively develops technologies that will help customers achieve high fuel economy,” Baney said. “In addition to Predictive Cruise Control, we offer the Kenworth Driver Performance Assistant, Kenworth Driver

Shift Aid, and Kenworth Driver Reward systems. All these technology advancements are important in delivering best in class fuel economy.” The Kenworth Driver Performance Assistant is now standard on Kenworth T680s and T880s spec’d with the PACCAR MX-13 engine. The system is a built-in virtual driver’s coach and a tool to improve driver performance for fleets and owner operators. Drivers receive real-time coaching based on coasting and braking as a means to improve fuel economy. A point system gives drivers, and fleets, the visual feedback they need to impact improvement. The ‘assistant’ may calculate if they performed at a very high level – 80 percent or more – or it may give them a low score to help indicate where improvement may be made. Available on Kenworth models utilizing the PACCAR MX-13 engine with manual transmissions, the Kenworth Driver Shift Aid
roadtoday www.roadtoday.com
provides a visual cue – “shift now” light – for when to shift. With engine peak torques at lower RPMs, the system is an excellent tool to help drivers hit the sweet spot in shifting. It even checks for drivability after the shift – which is based on the PACCAR MX-13’s unique engine torque curve and internal fuel map. Shift Aid also recommends skip or split shifting. By keeping the engine
in the optimum RPM range, fuel economy is enhanced. Driver Reward is used by fleets to reward good driving performance with speed adjustments. When a fleet sees positive fuel economy results from a driver, the vehicle’s cruise speed can be increased. The system uses fuel economy and percent idle time and the rewards program can be customized by the fleet.
*Individual fuel economy improvement will vary depending on use, road conditions and other factors.

New aerodynamic test results will help heavy-duty vehicles reduce drag, fuel costs, pollution and save money
T
ransport Canada’s ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program’s new test results on advanced aerodynamic devices for long-haul heavy-duty trucks will help reduce drag, fuel costs, pollution and save the Canadian trucking industry money. The report - Improving the Aerodynamic Efficiency of Heavy Duty Vehicles: Wind Tunnel Test Results of Trailer-Based Drag-Reduction Technologies - details world class wind tunnel evaluations of current and emerging aerodynamic devices in 96 different configurations. Cuttingedge testing at the National research Council of Canada was used to replicate real-world driving conditions inside a wind tunnel and has provided some of the most accurate assessments of truck aerodynamic devices ever achieved. In addition to detailed estimates on the potential emission and fuel savings by installing aerodynamic devices on various long-haul truck and trailer combinations, the report also looked at Canadian-specific truck configurations such as long combination vehicles. The results will help guide vehicle operators on optimal truck configurations to maximize aerodynamic efficiencies. The report and test results, produced with scientific contributions from the National Research Council of Canada and Environment Canada, will help inform future policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty RT vehicles.

Pre-Paid Maintenance Plans Help Customers Manage Costs Volvo Trucks North America has introduced pre-paid preventive maintenance plans as part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce customers’ operating costs. The maintenance plans cover all model year 2011 and newer Volvo models powered by Volvo D11, D13 or D16 engines and align with the new service intervals announced earlier this year.
V
olvo Premium Maintenance Plans are pre-paid contracts that offer numerous levels of coverage, locking in current parts and labor rates and increasing customer control of maintenance expenses. In addition to three specified plans ranging from basic oil changes and 74-point inspections to more indepth maintenance, Volvo customers can create custom plans of varying scope and duration to fit their specific needs. The plans also offer the option to include service of the aftertreatment system, transmission and chassis. Customers who purchase a Volvo Premium Maintenance Plan can schedule maintenance at any Volvo dealership in the U.S. and Canada through Volvo Action Service, Volvo’s staff of seasoned uptime experts that provides 24/7
support, offering more flexibility while on the road. Volvo Premium Maintenance Plans can be purchased through Volvo dealers. “Volvo is always looking for opportunities to help protect the customer’s investment,” said Magnus Gustafson, director of service contracts and workshop solutions. “By proactively focusing on service, we help keep the customer on the road by routinely placing the care of their truck in the hands of highly trained Volvo technicians.” The new program is Volvo’s latest effort to help customers control maintenance costs. Earlier this year, the company announced new recommended maintenance intervals that added 10,000 miles to the previous life of an oil change for model year 2011 and newer Volvo trucks RT equipped with Volvo engines. @roadtoday

What do your documents say?
W
hen consulting new owner operators in class or privately I often urge them to purchase a warranty for their new or used truck. It’s one thing to purchase a warranty, but the real issue is do you know what your warranty says? I am always surprised at how many owner operators buy warranties or sign contracts without reading them and knowing exactly what they entail. We all hate reading legalese in documents but it could just save yourbutt in the long run. You certainly don’t want to turn out like the driver I met at a coffee shop years ago. I was sitting in a coffee shop early one morning waiting for a meeting. Working away on my laptop there was a driver sitting close by and he was very engaged with his cell phone. After thirty minutes or so he came over to me and asked if I knew where the nearest Peterbilt dealership was. As I thought about his question he began to tell me his awful tale. This driver was from the Western United States and was bringing a load into Mississauga, Ontario. On route to Mississauga he was involved in a serious accident resulting in his truck catching fire and burning to the ground. The driver lost everything in the fire and was hoping to get replacement truck from the dealership. That wasn’t the worst of his problems however. In the coffee shop he told me the story of how he had cancelled some of his insurance to save money. He thought he had cancelled a piece of his liability insurance and was sure he was covered everywhere else. In contacting the insurance company about the accident they informed him that the insurance he cancelled was the fire insurance. They sent him the paperwork over his phone and he was waiting for the company to open to verify the documents. He said
he didn’t read the revised documents as close as he should have and now wasn’t sure where that left him. To add insult to the injury, his bank cards weren’t working in the bank machines. It had been a long day and night for this driver. I take people at face value unless I suspect something different. If this driver was feeding me a story then he certainly had taken the time to come up with it. I felt he was telling the truth however as the day before there had been a large truck fire in the area and he seemed to be genuine. After all he wasn’t asking for anything other than directions. I told him where the dealership was, gave him the name of a person that I knew worked there that could possibly help him. He had someone picking him up so I gave him twenty dollars so he could buy breakfast and started off for my meeting. I never heard from the driver again, but often wonder how he made out with his dilemma. Lessons are learned in so many ways and this driver sure taught me the importance of insurance and warranties. Make sure if you are buying insurance or warranties for your truck that you read the documents over and know what you are covered for. When your truck is burning to the ground is not the time to find out you don’t have fire insurance.

T
IFF has announced a fulsome fall lineup that offers audiences the chance to celebrate stargazing in and out of the cinema, with two celebritycentric exhibitions, major filmmaker retrospectives, special screenings of cult classics, and a compelling lineup of special guests and new releases. Heaven on Earth: The Films of Deepa Mehta — October 8 to November 15 Along with Alanis Obomsawin, Deepa Mehta is the most insightful, persistent and courageous social critic in Canadian cinema. What unifies all of Mehta’s films is the director’s empathy for those who are mistreated and marginalized, those who are ignored, forgotten or persecuted by the dictates of dogma and ideology. Mehta receives a well deserved TIFF Cinematheque salute with this retrospective, including her acclaimed Fire (1996), Earth (1998),

“Didn’t you suspect burglars had been in the house when you saw all the drawers pulled out and the contents scattered all over the floor?” asked the policeman. “No, I just thought my husband had been looking for a clean shirt,” replied the woman.
No complaint
The eight-year old boy had never spoken a word. One afternoon, as he sat eating his lunch, he turned to his mother and said, “Soup’s cold.” His astonished mother exclaimed, “Son, I’ve waited so long to hear you speak. But all these years you never said a thing. Why haven’t you spoken before?” The boy looked at her and replied, “Up until now, everything’s been okay.”
Who’s the boss?
The boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried an old-fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door. After lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back.”

One winter morning, an employee explained why he had shown up for work 50 minutes late. “It was so slippery that for every step I took ahead, I slipped back two.” The boss eyed him suspiciously. “Oh, yeah? Then how did you ever get here?” “I finally gave up,” he said, “and started for home.”

T
etanus is caused by bacteria that affect the nervous system. This serious bacterial infection leads to painful muscle cramping most noticeable in the neck and jaw. This is the reason that a tetanus infection is sometimes referred to as “lockjaw.” In serious or untreated cause of tetanus, the bacteria can affect the muscles of respiration which can become life threatening. The good news is that in developed countries such as Canada, cases of tetanus infections are fairly rare. It is estimated that there are approximately one million cases worldwide each year. The bacteria that cause tetanus are mainly found in animal feces, soil and dust. Most commonly, the bacteria enters the body through a deep flesh wound. Once in the body
roadtoday www.roadtoday.com
Tetanus
the bacteria produce a toxin that affects nerves which in turn causes muscle stiffness and spasm. The signs and symptoms of tetanus usually appear with in weeks of when the bacteria first entered the body. The average incubation period is seven or eight days. Common symptoms of tetanus include spasms and stiffness in your jaw, neck and abdominal muscles, difficulty swallowing, fever, sweating and rapid heat rate. It is important to see your doctor if you sustain a deep or dirty wound and haven’t had a tetanus booster shot within the past five years. Puncture wounds such as stepping on a rusty nail are the most common way of contracting a tetanus infection. Gunshot wounds, severe burns and surgical wound may also increase your risk of tetanus. If you have a minor wound there are a few simple steps to take in order to minimize your chance of getting tetanus. Firstly, keep the wound clean. Rinse the wound thoroughly with clean running water and clean the sounding area with soap. Next apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream or ointment if it is available. This helps discourage bacteria from growing. Also, covering the wound will help to keep it clean and keep debris out. Apply a new dressing at least once a day or if it gets dirty or wet.
There is no cure for tetanus. The goal of treatment is to manage the signs and symptoms until the effects of the toxin subside. Once diagnosed with tetanus, your doctor may give you a tetanus antitoxin to help neutralize the toxin. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to fight the tetanus bacteria. Powerful sedatives and other medications are usually used to control the muscle spasm. Unfortunately, tetanus infections usually require a lengthy and intensive treatment period. In developed countries, tetanus is prevented through immunization. The tetanus vaccine is usually administered to children during routine childhood vaccinations. It is recommended that adults get a tetanus booster shot every ten years. Doctors usually suggest that you make sure your tetanus immunity is up to date if you are planning on travelling to a developing country where tetanus is more prevalent. If you have any questions or concerns regarding tetanus or vaccinations, it is best to consult with your family doctor. RT Until next month, drive safely!

Natural gas and electric-powered transportation to keep Ontario moving in the right direction Congestion, infrastructure, transportation and energy—these are only some of the pressing issues that Ontario is struggling with. In the 1930s, the government developed a solution to the province’s congestion headache— development of Highway 401 served as a spine anchoring much of the province’s economy and enviable quality of life.
W
ith construction season just around the corner and congestion problem already costing the province some $6 billion per year due to increased environmental, health and safety, and vehicle and fuel costs, Ontarians now stand at a similar, again crowded, crossroad,” says Bob Betts, a spokesperson for Ontario Natural Gas Alliance. “Without action, these costs are expected to rise to $15 billion by 2030, and likely more than double that again by 2050. A large-scale transportation initiative emphasizing on mobility, connectivity, integration and leadership—here at home and abroad—is badly needed for southern Ontario.” Recognizing these growing concerns and constraints, a recent University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) study by Dr. Hoornweg and his team—titled Exploring Alternative Transportation Options in the Toronto Region: Electric and Natural Gas Vehicles—found that from the perspective of economic productivity, greenhouse gas emissions, improved local quality of life and transportation improvements are a clear priority. The study suggests that by 2050, the Toronto region and linked cities such as Montreal, London, Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa should be served by an extensive rapid transit system with complementary dedicated heavy duty truck routes and shared local ‘commuter vehicles’, which should switch from gasoline and diesel to natural gas, and light duty personal vehicles should be electric. “As a minimum, the proposed approach which includes making the switch to other cleaner, safer and more affordable energy, such as natural gas would provide fuel savings costs of some $76 billion and reduced greenhouse gas emissions of more than 100 million tonnes by 2050,” explains Dr. Hoornweg. In the study, Dr. Hoornweg and his colleagues propose scenarios consistent with the Metrolinx’s 2008 Big Move —a comprehensive plan to develop transportation infrastructure within an integrated transit system.
Clean energy as a sustainable fuel source
Natural gas is rapidly recognized as a long-term affordable and cleaner fuel source than gasoline and diesel for transportation. A smart solution is to take advantage of this available, clean resource— by expanding by 35 per cent of current market penetration of electric and natural gas vehicles.
Commuters pitch-in
In addition to encouraging commuters use privately owned electric-powered vehicles to drive to work or locally, government is urged to implement a Highway 401/407 bus rapid transit system—this will include stops at designated major interchanges where associated electric vehicle lots are located. Improved and integrated transportation in the Toronto region is the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money on fuel and operating costs, increase land values and economic activity, and improve overall quality of life.
