elcome to the August 2009 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. The 24th Annual Fergus Truck Show was yet another splendid show. Congratulations to everyone who made this event successful in spite of the ongoing economic challenges faced by the industry. Road Today like all previous years had a very meaningful presence at the show and availed the opportunity to announce May 29th and 30th as the dates for the 2010 edition of Road Today Truck Show. The GTA’s biggest truck show for the changing face of the industry will roll out again from the Powerade Centre in Brampton. Now that the show season is over, it’s time to get ready for National Trucking Week 2009, which rolls out September 6 – 13. The event is held annually to spotlight the important contributions made by the more than 500,000 Canadian men and women who keep the country’s freight moving. Trucks move 90 percent of all consumer products and foodstuffs within Canada and almost two thirds, by value, of our trade with the United States, our largest

trading partner. National Trucking Week serves as an ideal platform to thank the men and women who have chosen to build a career in the trucking industry. The Canadian Trucking Alliance is encouraging each carrier and supplier to undertake steps to mark the special week. For celebration ideas, visit the CTA web site www.cantruck.ca We would like to remind drivers to clear the way for emergency vehicles by slowing down and moving over. Every second counts when emergency vehicles, such as police cars, fire trucks and ambulances are rushing to respond to calls for help - any delay can be critical for emergency responders and those who urgently need them. Ontario law requires motorists who see the flashing lights or hear the sirens of an approaching emergency vehicle pull to the right and stop the moment it is safe to do so. Drivers must slow down and proceed with caution when approaching a parked emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. Please keep channels of communication open and send us your valuable feedback and suggestions, as improvement is a continuous process. Navistar on Track with 2010 Engines as Final Testing Nears Completion Final Validation Testing Underway in High Altitude, High Temperature Locations

ontinuing on its path to meet the latest emissions requirements through its Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) MaxxForce engines, Navistar has announced it is on track with its 2010 engine testing and will be prepared for a successful engine launch in the months ahead. “We are on track with our strategy of 2010 emissions compliance through the use of our EGR-only solution and are ahead of schedule in some cases,” said Jack Allen, president of Navistar’s North American truck group. “With our line-up of MaxxForce Advanced EGR engines, we’re delivering a simple and straightforward solution that places the responsibility of emissions compliance on us, the manufacturer, not the customer.” Navistar has completed rigorous testing and analysis in both its engine labs and field test units during the last 18 months. Earlier this year, Navistar completed its final stages of cold weather testing in northern Minnesota, one of the colder locations in North America, and well known for its frigid climate throughout the winter months. The final validation testing at high altitude and high temperature is being conducted in Nevada and the mountainous regions of Colorado. Navistar engineers are currently completing the final evaluation of engine performance in high elevations with aggressive inclines and declines. Now that the warm summer months are here, Navistar engineers will travel to desert-like conditions in Arizona and Nevada to complete its 2010 hot weather testing. Navistar has more than 60 test vehicles in operation today, logging thousands of miles each and every week. As testing and validation is finalized in preparation for launch, these 2010 test

vehicles will have logged millions of driving miles in real-world conditions. To meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2010 emissions standards for on-highway diesel engines, MaxxForce Advanced EGR engines will use proven technologies such as advanced fuel injection, air management, electronic controls and proprietary combustion technology. Navistar’s 2010 certified product meets the CARB NOx best achievable control technology (BACT) designation, assuring customers that Navistar’s products will meet their needs not just today, but in the future as well. Other major truck and engine manufacturers are choosing to meet 2010 emissions through liquid urea-based Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which requires the use of the chemical urea, as well as significant after treatment equipment which will add hundreds of pounds to each vehicle. Navistar’s EGR approach does not require the use of urea or the addition of heavy on-vehicle urea storage tanks, converters, heaters, and the additional electronics required by SCR systems. MaxxForce Advanced EGR engines set Navistar apart from the competition with a no-hassle, business-as-usual solution that will deliver lower total operating costs for customers. Since January, Navistar has been conducting extensive training sessions with customers and dealers, explaining the differences between EGR and SCR technology as well as the benefits from Navistar’s early introduction of lower NOx technologies for the environment and our customers.

More than Just the Warm Fuzzies : Going Green Cuts Costs... Boosts Proﬁts...

n the June edition of Road Today, I sent out a call to arms for transportation industry professionals to reduce the mammothsized carbon footprint that our sector continues to leave on the planet. In addition to the growing need for people everywhere to do their part to slow the effect our polluting ways are having on the environment, consumer habits are changing: Eating and buying locally is becoming popular among a population that is more and more sensitive to the impact their purchasing decisions can have. This evolution is bound to change the way the transportation industry operates and it is in our best interest to make sure we have a seat at the table in the new environmental economy. If you look around, there are many examples of industry leaders who are already changing the way they do business. In addition to making a difference, jumping on the green bandwagon differentiates them from the competition and in many cases has a positive impact on their bottom line. Whether you are ready to green your company from the ground up or are simply considering the purchase of a more fuel-efficient truck, the message with regard to transportation and the environment is becoming crystal clear: It’s time to get on board. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ways to start greening your business: • Participate in the tire recycling program in your province.2 • Invest in trucks with better fuel-efficiency: Not only can this reduce emissions but it can have a tremendous impact on reducing operating costs. • Investigate programs designed to reduce fuel consumption by teaching drivers about things like progressive shifting, engine speed optimization, idle reduction, smoother braking and acceleration, anticipatory driving, speed control and optimal gearing.3 • Look at other ways to make your trucks more aerodynamic (and fuel efficient), by incorporating elements like low-drag tires, as well as aerodynamic cabs and trailers. • Consider other energy-saving technologies that include

systems to reduce unnecessary engine idling by using auxiliary power units that provide electricity to the cab, direct-fired heaters and coolant systems that provide temperature control, and programmable automatic engine shut-off systems.4 • Streamline your operations to get the most out of your trucks and use technologies like load matching to reduce the number of trucks that come back empty.5 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Freightliner Trucks Introduces its First Natural Gas-Powered Truck Freightliner M2 112 with Natural Gas saves fuel, operating costs

reightliner Trucks has introduced its first natural gas-powered truck, the Freightliner Business Class M2 112 NG, ideal for port operations, natural gas utilities, and municipalities. An OEM factory built product, this truck is powered by the Cummins Westport ISL G. Natural gas technology can save an estimated $6,000 in annual fuel and operating costs per truck. “The M2 112 is a versatile and hard working truck, and adding a natural gas option only enhances its efficiency,” said Melissa Clausen, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “As part of Daimler Truck’s Shaping Future Transportation initiative, we will continue to provide reliable trucks with both economic and environmental benefits.” The Cummins Westport ISL G, an 8.9 liter stoichiometric cooled-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engine, offers the lowest emissions available in the industry without sacrificing top level performance and efficiency. Available in rating up to 320 hp, the ISL G already meets EPA 2010 standards with 85 percent lower NOx emissions than the C Gas Plus engine, and features the highest power-to-weight ratio in class with an optimized turbocharger. The ISL G also features a maintenance free exhaust system with a three-way catalyst. No further technology or after-treatment will be required to meet 2010 emissions. “Natural gas technology has come a long way. Buses have been using it for years, but the next generation natural gas powertrains have more power because less air is needed for combustion,” said Clausen. “The technology simply burns cleaner.” In 2009, Freightliner Trucks will also offer a CNG version of the M2 112, followed by a CNG single axle tractor, 4x2 and 6x2 truck, and vocational configurations.

In recent weeks, employees at the Macungie Assembly Operations plant have built MACK Granite and MACK TerraPro models equipped with EPA’10 emissions reduction systems on the production line. These trucks have the same components that will be installed on customer trucks later this year. “The fact that we are already building these trucks online clearly demonstrates that we are ready to start producing them for our customers,” said Jim Goodell, Macungie’s vice president and general manager. Mack will use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment to meet the near-zero emissions standards of EPA’10.

Kenworth’s Chillicothe Plant Celebrates 35 Years

enworth Truck Company’s manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, Ohio, recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. Kenworth’s largest plant has produced more than 325,000 trucks since it was opened in 1974. “The employees at Chillicothe have played a key role in Kenworth’s success over the past 35 years. Along with welltrained employees, we utilize leading-edge technology, production and logistics systems to build quality Kenworth trucks,” said Scott Blue, Kenworth Chillicothe plant manager. “Kenworth’s Chillicothe plant is one of the industry’s most advanced truck plants,” added Marilyn Santangelo, Kenworth assistant general manager for operations. “The plant has undergone a significant expansion in the past two years and is now one-half million square feet in size, or more

than 50 percent larger compared to the 1974 footprint.” For example, Chillicothe began production early this year with an all new, highly automated paint system, the first PACCAR plant with four paint robots in one booth, allowing two major components to be painted at one time. “With this new capacity, Kenworth gained the ability to make base coat/clear coat standard on all models,” said Santangelo. “Key benefits are much higher resistance to fading and acid rain, consistently higher gloss, and enhanced residual value.” This year, the plant also introduced the new PACCAR Technology Center, which provides visitors with unique insight into PACCAR’s technology and quality leadership along with Kenworth’s truck products and support services. The PACCAR Technology Center also

features PACCAR engines, technology demonstrations and interactive displays, and information from PACCAR Financial, PacLease, PACCAR Parts, PACCAR Winch and Dynacraft. Last year, the plant received the prestigious Global Six Sigma award for Best Project Achievement in the Health, Safety and Environment category. The award highlighted Kenworth’s continuous efforts to improve the environment by finding new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Chillicothe also earned the prestigious ISO 14001:2004 certification for effective environmental management systems established to help build Class 8 trucks in an environmentally sustainable manner. The plant currently produces Kenworth’s T660, T800, T2000, W900 and C500 models.

Haultec Adds Years To Trailer’s Life With The New Chalmers Air Ride Retrofit Conversion Kit

aultec Trailers Ltd. introduced the new Chalmers 1300 series air ride suspension conversion kit on a Carl Farrow 15 year old trailer at the Fergus Truck Show on July 23, 2009. This happened just hours after receiving approval from the MTO allowing his 1995 trailer to meet SPIF (Safe, Productive, Infrastructure-Friendly) requirement for 2011. Craig Cadenhead the president of Haultec Trailers Ltd. the manufacturer and distributor of the Cobra trailer said “This new Chalmers retrofit kit will mean trailers that would be subject to a weight cut back as of 2011 will now be able to be converted to air ride allowing all axles on the trailer to be fully equalized. This will make the trailers legal under SPIF. The conversion can be done at a fraction of the price of a new trailer and less than half the price of a new frame. This will save the trailer owner’s thousands of dollars while adding substantially to the resale value of the trailer. Steve Clarke the general manager of Chalmers Suspensions International Inc. was on hand in the Haultec booth at the show. Clarke said “We are very pleased to be partnering with Haultec on this project. Haultec approached us a few months ago to solve this trailer obsolescence issue. The great thing about the Chalmers 1300 series conversion kit is that it will make all these older trailers meet SPIF requirements again by fully equalizing the Chalmers with

the other trailer axles and retain all the other positive attributes that made the Chalmers 700 series so popular with trailer owners before the laws changed in 2003”. With the huge interest shown at the Fergus Truck Show, Chalmers plans to be tooling up and to be in production by the fourth quarter of this year. This will give Haultec, who will be doing the retrofitting time to schedule trailers into their facility. Jim Brown owner of Jim Brown Trucking encouraged Haultec to come up with a solution to this equalization issue. He did suggest having all new trailers purchased in the future fitted with this new Chalmers 1300 series suspension system. Chalmers will have new trailer suspensions available at the same time as the retrofit kits. The Chalmers 1300 series is a walking beam, rubber spring, two air bag suspension. The air bags assist the rubber springs to improve ride quality. The air bags are plumbed together with the steerable lift axles to ensure all axles are fully equalized making this axle combination legal under the new SPIF program. arket segmentation is the process (in marketing) of grouping a market (i.e. customers) into smaller subgroups. This is not something that is arbitrarily done. It is derived from the fact that the total market is often made up of submarkets (called 'segments'). These segments are homogeneous in their constitution i.e. people in the segment have some similarities to be recognized as a group. Because of this intra-group similarity, they are likely to respond somewhat similarly to a given marketing strategy. That is, they are likely to have similar feeling and ideas about a marketing mix, comprised of a given product or service, sold at a given price, distributed in a certain way, and promoted in a certain way. Markets can be segmented or targeted using a variety of factors. The bases for segmenting consumers in the market include: • Demography (age, family size, life cycle, occupation) • Geographical bases (states, regions, countries) • Behavior bases (product knowledge, usage, attitudes, responses) • Psychographic bases (lifestyle, values, personality) A business must analyze the needs and wants of different market segments before determining their own niche. Ontario Government Making It Easier To Buy Electric Vehicles Ontario's target is to become a world leader in building and driving electric cars.

he Ontario government aims to have one out of every 20 vehicles driven in Ontario to be electrically powered by 2020. This would put Ontarians into cleaner, more efficient vehicles, and expand the electric vehicle market for manufacturers. Under a plan announced on July 15th, buyers of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles will receive: • Rebates of between $4,000 and $10,000 for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles purchased after July 1, 2010. • Green vehicle licence plates that would allow drivers to: - Use less-congested High Occupancy Vehicle (carpool) lanes, even if there is only one person in the vehicle. - Access public charging facilities and parking at Ontario government and GO Transit lots.

Ontario will also add 500 electric vehicles to the Ontario Public Service fleet. Expanding the use of electric vehicles by consumers and government will help create and sustain jobs in the auto sector and put Ontario at the forefront of the new, green economy in North America.

However, OTA president, David Bradley, says there are barriers, both regulatory and financial impeding the industry from accelerating the market penetration of the full-range of proven, currently available GHGbusting technology. ”Some of the old rules governing truck weights and dimensions standards, which were written at a time when environmental considerations were not on the radar screen, don’t provide the flexibility to allow carriers to add some of the technologies to their tractors or trailer,” he said. “And, there is the current reality that the industry simply doesn’t have the capital or the cash to re-equip the majority of their fleet even with the payback that improved fuel efficiency brings. Credit has become very hard to get; the banks are making it tough on truckers these days.” The OTA survey revealed that close to three quarters of respondents have introduced in-cab heaters into their fleet to avoid having to run the engine to keep cabs warm in the winter. Almost half

of the responding fleets said they have purchased auxiliary power units (APUs) which heat and cool the truck cab through a separate electronic unit. Interestingly, investments in both of these technologies are currently being encouraged through a modest $2.9 million over 4 years Ontario Ministry of Transportation initiative called the Green Commercial Vehicle Program. Until a couple of years ago APU’s also received partial rebates from the federal government through a Natural Resources Canada program. However, OTA says that successful program was mothballed when the change in government occurred and a new Transport Canada program has filled only part of the gap. Moreover, says Bradley, the current incentive programs do not include the full scope of proven fuel efficiency technologies. For example, the survey says that 49% of the companies are introducing the new generation of low rolling resistant widebase single tires into their fleets, replacing the less fuel efficient conventional dual tires. “Ontario made the progressive step of increasing the axle weight allowances to better accommodate the wide-base single tires which was very welcome; the key now is to get people moving quicker to these more fuel efficient tires and cost is a factor, especially these days.” Lagging behind in terms of industry

uptake were new trailer skirts (9% of fleets said they had introduced them) and rear of trailer aerodynamic devices, commonly referred to as boat tails (only 2%). According to Bradley, “sometimes it takes time for some things to catch on, until people see they work; the industry has been sold a lot of snake oil in the past,” but in the case of boat-tails, for example, Bradley says the key problem is that current regulations only permit the use of smaller boat-tails compared to those allowed in the U.S., which significantly reduces the fuel efficiency benefit. “I think MTO was initially worried about the safety implications of the overhang from a full boat-tail,” he says, “but we’ve asked them to review that matter.” “Ontario is further ahead than a lot of Canadian jurisdictions,” Bradley notes. “They’ve removed the regulatory barriers to wide-base single tires, they are about to pilot a new generation of longer truck combinations, they passed the mandatory speed limiter law, and they introduced the Green Commercial Vehicle Program. That is all good, but if GHG reduction is the fight of our lives there is so much more we can and should be doing today that does not involve increased taxes or complicated cap and trade systems. The industry’s economic goals and society’s environmental goals have never been more aligned.”

eople, it may be that they are busy. Maybe they are just engulfed in their own problems and concerns, or it’s possible they don’t respect you. How will you know? You probably won’t, unless they tell you outright; or you may sense it in their actions. That’s usually the way things work in the real world. So if you’re having trouble getting a response that may be why. If you’re not sure what I am talking about – it’s “Respect” or the lack thereof. We all want it, but few actually achieve it. There have been some who have searched their whole lives for respect, but never get it. Part of the reason may be how they go about getting it. Respect doesn’t come without work. Treating people the way you would like to be treated, doing what you say, all of those things contribute to the amount of respect you will receive. In the trucking industry respect can make or break your career. If you’re a driver looking for respect then here is how you do it; be professional in how you deal with people. For more information on professionalism, refer to my past articles in the magazine. In other words help people if you can, remember when you were starting out. Be honest and sincere when confronting problems in your daily life. Don’t put people down, no matter how trivial the question they may ask. Be creative! This is a big one with me. Have you ever been in a safety meeting when a problem is being addressed and the whole room shuts a person down, because someone came up with a weird idea or solution? It may not be perfect, but at least that person is trying to come up with something. What was your idea? I respect that person

a lot more for coming up with something at least. Be yourself. No one is perfect, but people will respect you more for just being yourself. There’s been guys no matter what you’ve done they’ve done it better, bigger and with more gusto. But you look at them and they can’t even make it down their driveway without directions. You don’t hear the likes of Bill Gates, Richard Branson going on and on about their accomplishments all the time. That’s because they focus on the future not the past. Focus on your future, not your past and you will impress people paperwork? If the answer is yes, then you more. Speaking of the future, how do you have your answer as to why people don’t feel about people who always seem to have respect you. If the answer is no, then you a good outlook on their lives? It’s probably may be doing something you don’t realize. If you believe you are doing things right because they have goals and dreams for the future that keeps life interesting. People but still don’t seem to be getting the respect respect people who are doing things with you feel you deserve, then a talk with that their lives. I believe if you just do your best person may be required. Something deeper to be a good person, people will respect may be involved. For the most part, respect you, even with some mistakes and failures. starts with you. Respect other people and The final question is who do you want you’ll get what you deserve. On keeping a low profile of late: My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working

on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.

Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.

What went wrong down south? I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.

It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.

Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

Navistar Announces 2010 Emissions Pricing on International Trucks Prices to Increase $6,000 to $8,000 Depending on Model

avistar has announced 2010-compliant MaxxForce Advanced EGR engine technology will increase International truck prices $6,000-$8,000, depending on engine model. • Vehicles with mid-range diesel engines, including the MaxxForce 7, MaxxForce DT, MaxxForce 9 and MaxxForce 10, will increase by $6,000. • Vehicles with heavy-duty diesel engines, including the MaxxForce 11 and MaxxForce 13, will increase by $8,000. Increases will come in the form of a non-discountable surcharge applied to each vehicle’s base price. To meet the 2010 EPA emissions requirements for diesel engines, International trucks will be powered by MaxxForce Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines with proven technologies including: Advancements in fuel injection: The next-generation fuel injection systems are capable of delivering fuel into the cylinder multiple times per cycle and at higher pressures. Utilization of one or more pre- and post-injections along with the main injection event means combustion can take place over a longer period and be more complete, resulting in less creation of NOx emissions.

Improved air intake management: The advanced EGR system utilizes dual turbochargers. The first, smaller turbocharger spins up immediately to provide boost at lower engine speeds, while the second, larger turbo provides maximum power at higher engine RPMs. The company also placed an inter-stage cooler between the turbochargers to help reduce air temperature going into the cylinders and allow more air to be packed into the large second stage turbo for maximum power at high engine speeds. Combining these features with the increased EGR rate means the combustion in the cylinder occurs slower and at a lower temperature, generating less NOx. Improved electronic calibration: Engine controllers previously utilized pre-programmed lookup table to determine the fuel-air mixture to burn. Increases in computing power allow the engine controller to continuously calculate the optimum mix to achieve maximum power and efficiency in many different situations. Proprietary combustion technology: The redesigned combustion bowl combines with the higher fuel injection pressure to break the fuel up into a finer mist spread more evenly inside the cylinder, resulting in a more complete and cleaner burn.

OTA Foundation Chosen as Official Charity for David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament

UAP signs a binding agreement with Uni-Select to acquire the Palmar Truck Parts Network

AP Inc. has entered into a binding agreement with Uni-Select Inc. and its subsidiary Palmar Inc. to acquire eighteen stores of its Palmar Truck Parts network. The transaction is expected to be closed by August 17, 2009. These new stores will allow UAP to pursue its growth strategy and strengthen its position as a leader of Canada’s aftermarket auto parts and truck and heavy vehicle parts industry. By adding these stores, UAP will better serve its current and future customers thanks to a stronger presence in several regional markets, notably in Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. The Palmar stores will gradually be integrated into the eighty-four Traction stores network and the three TW Distribution Centres of UAP Heavy Vehicle Parts Division.

he OTA Education Foundation has been selected as the designated charity for proceeds from the 3rd annual David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament & Silent Auction. The golf tournament serves as a tribute to the late David Virgoe, a truck driver and truck hero who lost his life after taking evasive action to avoid oncoming traffic caused by street racers on Highway 400 in June, 2007. “I think that this is a really good fit”, says Debbie Virgoe, the wife of the late David Virgoe and organizer of this year’s charity event. “David placed a great deal of importance on education, and the OTA Education Foundation, with its ties to children of parents who work in the trucking industry, is the type of charity that we want this tournament’s proceeds to go to”. “We certainly feel both honoured and privileged to have been selected by the tournament’s organizers to be the official charity for this year’s tribute to Mr. Virgoe” says Scott Smith, chairman of the OTA Education Foundation. “While the story behind this event is truly a sad one, the silver lining is that several Ontario university and college students will benefit from the generosity of those who participate in this event”. The 3rd Annual David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament and Silent Auction will take place on Saturday August 29, 2009 at the Harbourview Golf & Country Club in Gilford, Ontario. Proceeds from the tournament and silent auction will be used to fund OTA Education Foundation scholarships for students of parents who work in Ontario’s trucking industry. ith the nomination deadline less than two months away for the Bridgestone Canadian Truck Hero Award, the award's creator and sponsor Bridgestone Canada Inc. (BSCA) is urging members of the Canadian trucking industry to act. "We should not let heroic highway acts go unrecognized," said Jim West, General Manager, Commercial Products, Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions, a division of BSCA. The deadline is September 30, 2009. Nominations can come from anywhere in Canada. The award program looks for trucking professionals who have gone beyond the call of duty to lend a helping hand to someone in need while on the road. The recipient of this national award will receive a cheque for $3,000, a specially-commissioned trophy and a two-day expensepaid trip for two to the award ceremony in November held in Toronto in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Ontario Trucking Association. ello everyone, I hope that all of you are doing well and enjoying the weather. Recently, I read a sad newspaper story about a truck driver that had died in his bunk at night due to a ruptured brain aneurysm. Truck driving as a profession includes many hours if not days spent alone on the road. Unfortunately, when medical emergencies occur, the driver is sometimes unable to get much needed help. As a result, for this month’s article, I have decided to discuss brain aneurysms in detail. Let’s get started. Basically, an aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or ballooning of a major blood vessel due to the weakening of its wall. Aneurysms in the brain usually occur at the junctions of the large arteries at the base of the brain. The good news is that as long as the aneurysm is small and does not rupture, there is no immediate danger or risk to the individual. In many cases, people will live their entire life without knowing that they have one. Recent studies have shown that approximately 3-6% of adults in North America have aneurysms inside their brain. However, only 1 in 100 people with an aneurysm will suffer a rupture. Anyone can develop a brain aneurysm but, they are more common in adults than children and in women than men. Most brain aneurysms develop due to regular wear and tear of the arteries. Most often, they occur at joints or forks in arteries because these sites are weaker. In rare cases, trauma to the head can also sufficiently damage arteries to cause an
