elcome to the July 2009 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Truck show season is in full swing. Though, the weather so far has been unpredictable at majority of the show venues, but still the enthusiasm shown by industry professionals is always the best thing to happen. The just concluded Stirling Truck Show was a great event. Congratulations to the Stirling & District Lions Club and all volunteer teams for a successful show. Coming up next is the Fergus Truck Show. So do mark your calendar for the July 25th weekend, visit the Fergus Truck Show with your families and please do not forget to meet team Road Today at Booth M 11. Speed limiter regulations are now enforced as the educational enforcement period of six months has ended on June 30th. Police and MTO enforcement officers will use both existing traffic control techniques and portable electronic testing units to verify the activation of a vehicle speed limiter at 105 km/h maximum. The use of portable electronic testing units will provide access

to the vehicle engine data and confirm if the limiter has been activated at a speed of 105 km/h or less. Please ensure compliance to avoid fines. For specific details, log on to www.roadtoday.com The Ontario government is investing a record $2.4 billion in 2009 to keep our highways and bridges in top form and stimulate the economy - an increase of 24 percent over last year. Drivers are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones. One can also be fined up to $500 and three demerit points for not obeying the sign of the traffic control person. Summer brings increased traffic to our roads and highways. We need to slow down, look around, signal our intentions and always be trying to identify anything that could be a potential hazard while we travel. This includes pedestrians, cyclist and vehicle operators. Remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility, but it starts with you. Please keep channels of communication open and send us your valuable feedback and suggestions, as improvement is a continuous process. Do log on to www. goodmorningtoday.ca and listen our weekly radio program online. Drive safe and see you next month! Manan Gupta Editor

Unscrupulous freight brokers need to clean up their act as the issues related to financial losses received by trucking companies were brought to the attention of Federal Transport Minister John Baird at a meeting held in Brampton. Representatives from trucking companies have submitted a petition asking the federal and provincial governments to “enact legislation that would require load brokers to be licensed by the government and require that all licensed load brokers be bonded to ensure that businesses are compensated for any losses that occur as a result of unscrupulous load brokers.” Read more inside...

Federal Transport Minister John Baird listens to truckers’ concerns

F

ederal Transportation and Infrastructure Minister John Baird was in Brampton on June 26th to hear the first hand experiences of trucking and transportation company owners duped by unscrupulous freight brokers. In a meeting held at the Shingaar Banquet Hall and arranged through the efforts of Kyle Seeback, Conservative Candidate from Brampton West, about 75 trucking professionals submitted a petition asking the federal and provincial governments to “enact legislation that would require load brokers to be licensed by the government and require that all licensed load brokers be bonded to ensure that businesses are compensated for any losses that occur as a result of unscrupulous load brokers." Such regulations exist in the United States and the petition wants the federal and provincial governments to get up to speed. According to the petition, “transportation companies are losing between 5 and 35 percent of their profits due to load brokers who broker loads and then abscond with the money without paying the carriers," Randeep Sandhu, President of Load Solutions, a freight company based in Puslinch, Ontario, said his business has lost about $125,000 to rogue freight brokers during the last year. Other trucking professionals including representatives from the South Asian Trucking Association of Canada raised their concerns and brought ongoing challenges and difficulties to the attention of Minister. Transport Minister Baird gave a patient hearing to all participants and assured a thorough look in finding out a solution towards regulating the freight brokers in Canada.

Kenworth Expands Product Line with Introduction of Kenworth T470 Targets Vocational and Municipal Applications

K

enworth Truck Company has expanded its product range in the vocational and municipal markets with the introduction of the new Kenworth T470 model. “Kenworth is expanding its product line while other truck manufacturers are exiting the market,” said Gary Moore, Kenworth assistant general manager for marketing and sales. “The T470 offers Kenworth durability and performance that is serviced by our World’s Best dealer organization for snowplow, dump, mixer, winch, refuse, and other heavy frontaxle vocational and municipal applications.” The Kenworth T470 is powered by a 9-liter Cummins ISL engine with 345 hp and 1,150 lb-ft of torque. Other features include a range of manual and automatic transmissions; and 12,000 to 22,000 lb. rated front axles, 21,000 to 26,000 lb. rated single rear axles, and 40,000 to 46,000 lb. rated tandem rear axles. The fixed grille hood has a 50.5 inch bumper setting for convenient installation of a front engine PTO. The hood allows for full extended frame rails for a heat-treated, 120,000 psi steel frame without the need for cutouts. Halogen projector headlamps

are standard equipment. The interior of the Kenworth T470 features the same, highquality multiplexed dash installed in Kenworth’s Class 8 product line with a large panel for convenient installation of body controls and gauges. The Kenworth Driver Information Center is standard in the T470. The popular Kenworth Extended Day Cab is available as an option. The Kenworth T470 is now available for order and initial production is scheduled to begin in July.

Extended Range of API Certified DEF Products Now Available from Cummins Filtration

C

ummins Filtration has announced that they have expanded their product line to include convenient, smaller sized packaging options as well as dispensing equipment for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). Previously offered in bulk, 330 gallon plastic totes, 275 gallon disposable totes and 55 gallon plastic drums, Fleetguard DEF is now also available in 1 gallon, 2.5 gallon and 5 gallon containers. The dispensing equipment offered includes air and electric pumps for both drums and totes. In addition to expanding their DEF product line, Cummins Filtration recently gained API certification for its DEF product. API certification is a voluntary program established by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to certify and monitor DEF throughout the supply chain from manufacturing to the end customer to ensure that product meets ISO specifications. “Cummins has always been committed to providing high quality products our customers can depend on,” said KC Hall, Director of Diesel Exhaust Fluid Business Development. “Meeting the ISO specifications and adhering to the API certification process helps to reassure our customers that they have chosen a reliable DEF source with the consistent high quality controls required to optimize and protect their equipment investment.” The extended range of Fleetguard DEF products is available to the broad Cummins Filtration network, which includes over 20,000 locations with nearly 8,000 retailers in North America. Unique amongst other DEF providers, this network will have the option to order DEF along with their filter and coolant products they are receiving from Cummins Filtration today. “When one considers the supplier administration and transportation costs of alternative DEF supply, we believe our freight included DEF offering will be an attractive alternative for many of our delivery locations,” said Hall. “We can also offer dedicated, streamlined DEF shipments as desired by our customers and as the DEF consumption demand grows in the future.” Since 2003 Cummins Filtration has supplied DEF, the urea based solution necessary for SCR system functionality. More information about DEF including brochures, Q&A, training modules, and more can be found on cumminsfiltration.com/def.

Daimler Truck Financial Celebrates 35 years in the Trucking Industry From a small captive finance start-up, company now manages $5.4 billion portfolio across major industry segments

D

aimler Truck Financial celebrated 35 years in the trucking industry last month, having put over a million trucks on the road since the mid-1970s while building up its portfolio serviced to $5.4 billion and managing more than 43,000 contracts. Starting as Freightliner Financial in 1974 with few employees and several contracts, the company has grown to 230 employees, primarily located in a new operations center in Fort Worth, Texas, while others are in Fort Mill, S.C. and Farmington Hills, Mich. The global economic climate has changed many times since the company started doing business to support the sale of Freightliner Trucks. Business started against the backdrop of the world's first oil shock in 1974. That led to the first energy crisis and gasoline shortages, culminating in the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act passed in 1974 limiting highway speeds to 55 miles per hour. Having stayed in the trucking industry through tough and good times in the economy, Daimler Truck Financial takes a balanced approach to managing its portfolio. The company focuses on profitable growth by diversifying its portfolio. Today, the portfolio is spread across the major trucking industry segments: fleet (51%), dealers (29%), vocational (10%) and owner/operator (9%). Recognized as a valuable partner by dealer councils, fleet companies and Daimler Trucks North America, Daimler Truck Financial consistently is a top-ranked financial services provider in the annual American Truck Dealer survey. Known for its innovation in supporting customers, Daimler Truck Financial in recent months has introduced on-line training for dealerships to learn finance & insurance initiatives; won a bid from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to finance environmentally compliant hybrid trucks; and introduced insurance packages bundled into its financial products for fleets and dealerships.

Volvo Now Accepting Orders for EPA2010 Trucks, Deliveries Begin This Year

C

ustomers can place orders now for trucks across Volvo’s product line equipped to meet the EPA2010 emissions standards, using Volvo’s selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. SCR also helps Volvo increase the fuel efficiency of its EPA’10 trucks and reduce their carbon footprint. Initial production is scheduled for Fall 2009, with deliveries beginning a few weeks later. These will be initial production trucks, not prototypes or test models. “A number of customers have expressed an interest in placing SCR-equipped units in their fleets ahead of 2010,” said Scott Kress, senior vice president – sales & marketing. “This gives early adopters the opportunity to gain familiarity with the technology and the benefits of SCR. It’s another example of Volvo Trucks following through on our commitment to customers to be ready to go for 2010. Volvo is ready. How many other manufacturers can say that?” “These trucks will deliver the zero emissions and improved fuel economy SCR equipped Volvo trucks have demonstrated over two winters and more than three million miles of North American customer testing,” Kress said. “We have also demonstrated that our ‘No Regen’ promise is a reality that will bring additional fuel economy improvements by eliminating active regenerations of the diesel particulate filter.” Orders for approximately 50 Volvo trucks equipped with SCR

Volvo Trucks North America is now taking orders for trucks equipped with its Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment system (seen here in a cutaway display). Exhaust enters the top of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) at upper right and exits the DPF at bottom right into the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) decomposition zone. DEF is injected into the hot exhaust and flows to the SCR catalytic converter (at left), where NOx is converted into nitrogen gas and water. The now-clean exhaust then exits through the exhaust pipe, at center.

had been received by mid-June. Customers can order their EPA’10 ready trucks through their Volvo dealer. Initiating the process so soon also provides Volvo Trucks the opportunity to efficiently and effectively ramp up production of EPA’10 trucks on its production line at the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Va., before the complete changeover next year. NRV production processes have been modified in recent months in preparation for 2010, and to enhance efficiency and manufacturing quality.

The Transport Institute and TransCore Collaborate for Transportation Data Analysis and Research

T

ransCore Link Logistics and the Transport Institute at the University of Manitoba have entered into a partnership to research transportation trends in the Canadian trucking industry based on data from TransCore’s Canadian based Loadlink freight matching service. Focusing on economic and policy issues as well as the technical aspects of the industry, the University of Manitoba’s Transport Institute is a Canadian leader in transportation research building upon four decades of experience. In 2008, The Transport Institute completed the highly acclaimed “Proposed Innovative Freight Practices” project, which focused on best practices for route optimization, emission reduction and energy conservation. The project highlighted the following key areas for sustainable improvement - Trip scheduling, Load matching, Idle-reduction programs, and Driver training programs, as well as Vehicle operations and maintenance. There are a little over 10,000 for hire carriers operating in the Canadian market. The vast majority (6,900) are small size carriers, operating fewer than 10 trucks and earning less than $1 million annually. Medium size carriers (3,300) with operating fleets of ten to 200 tractors make up the other significant segment. The top 100 carriers, each with annual revenues of over $25 million operate with a fleet size of over 200 tractors. The Transport Institute and TransCore’s research will focus

on the volume of data, over three million freight matches per day, that are generated by Loadlink. Thousands of loads and equipment are posted on the largest spot market for surface freight in Canada and cross border freight with the United States. Over 5,000 transportation companies comprised of freight brokers and for hire carriers throughout Canada access the system every day. Members have access to a wide array of products and services such as invoice factoring, credit bureau reports on all members, satellite truck and trailer tracking, breakdown services, truck specific routing and mileage, online recruitment, fuel discount program, ACE border crossing service, dispatch and operations management and much more. Over 50 percent of Loadlink subscribers are based in Ontario, Quebec and Western Canada and together account for 45 percent, with the latter increasing it’s share of the membership. Claudia Milicevic of TransCore praised the Transport Institute’s leadership and expertise in “conducting in-depth and practical research that provides valuable insights into the most pressing issues faced by the transportation industry. “This report will provide visibility into emerging trends that are developing or declining and enable us to share this information with our broker and carrier members.” Paul Larson of the Transport Institute explained, “TransCore provides a unique visibility into the actual movement of freight in Canada and the United States and a fleet’s usage of technology.”

Trucking Suffers Third Most Job Losses in April According to Statistics Canada Sheds another 3,300 jobs during the month

A

ccording to preliminary figures released by Statistics Canada, April was the first month where service sector job losses outpaced those in the goods sector. Universities (-6,900), food services and drinking places (-4,100), and truck transportation (-3,300) led the way. “This is a further indication that the trucking industry is still playing catch-up in terms of capacity reduction,” says the CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, David Bradley. “For the past several months the reduction in freight volume has been outpacing the industry’s efforts to cut capacity.” However, he says, “capacity will inevitably and eventually adjust to the market and when that time comes, some of the downward pressure on freight rates should abate.” In the meantime, Bradley says that the recent return to higher diesel prices will put additional pressure on carriers. “The softness, relatively speaking, in the diesel market had probably enabled some companies who were teetering on the edge to survive. However, with diesel costs climbing again, it may be tough for some of those companies to continue. Certainly, carriers will have to be disciplined in terms of fuel surcharges if they are to continue in business.” Overall, total non-farm payroll employment fell by 51,400 in

April, down 0.4% from March. Since the peak in October 2008, the number of employees has fallen every month, bringing total losses over this period to 376,500. Job losses occurred in 64% of industries, unchanged from a month before. The goods sector also experienced a drop in payroll employment in April, mainly in support activities for mining, oil and gas extraction and specialty trade contractors. The manufacturing industry experienced its smallest job decline since the start of the recent economic downturn. The provinces with the largest declines in non-farm payroll employment in April were Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. Employment in the other provinces was little changed in the month.

Bluelake Enterprises introduces Power D-Syl designed for Superior Performance

- Ray Wellman

POWER

For year round performance in all diesel fuels “Over the 60 BETTER FUELtrucks, COMBUSTION we are averaging more BETTER PERFORMANCE than 0.5 miles per gallon!”

BETTER COLD STARTS

- Bobby Archer

Use Power D-SYL with confidence!

Fleet Manager

“Power D-Syl” introduced by Bluelake Enterprises is designed for superior performance and to overcome the deficiencies in ULSD. Research shows that Power D-Syl bridges the gap in the varying diesel fuel quality by increasing the properties of diesel fuel such as increasing combustion efficiency, excellent low temperature performance, optimized cetane levels and adding significant lubricity. In essence, consumers have a premium diesel fuel when Power D-Syl is added to standard diesel fuel. Issues with incomplete combustion occur when fuel fails to burn completely. Three things can happen: power decreases, emissions increase because of unburned fuel exits through the tailpipe, and fuel economy decreases. In other words, performance suffers and costs more money. The Power D-Syl Solution Power D-Syl is formulated to cover ALL issues with engines such as extreme cold start up, extra lubricity and optimized cetane levels. Superior” clean-up performance” makes up the optimized combination so your engine and fuel will operate at maximum performance. All this at one simple treatment rate with very competitive pricing. Diesel injector additives are common and have been for a number of years. Using Power D-Syl at the recommended dosage in the fuel can control or even remove these deposits, restore optimum combustion efficiency and associated performance as well as reduce emissions. By using Power D-Syl your engine will have excellent cold start performance, added lubricity, optimum cetane levels, significant combustion efficiency, and can clean up the fuel systems so your engine will perform as good as new. Canadian companies

have found that their engines have more power and run quieter, emissions are reduced and many are realizing improved fuel economy! Power D-Syl is very cost competitive and by far the best value in market today! The real answer is Power D-Syl does what it says. You will not question Power D-Syl after you use it! Wilburn Archer Trucking, a leading fleet now chooses to use Power D-Syl as a bulk treatment since their trucks have never had more power and as a fleet of 60 International trucks, have increased their fuel economy by over 0.5 miles per gallon, says Bobby Archer. Similar results have been found by Sylvite Transport, Upper Canada Minerals, Hutchinson Fuels, Woods Farms and many other trucking, construction and diesel owners! Bluelake Enterprises Inc. offers a variety of other products. An emerging problem is corrosion and sludge formation in fuel tanks. This is what many call premature corrosion issues and more sludge is a significant concern for many today. Bluelake Enterprises Inc. also offers unsurpassed fuel tank corrosion protection and sludge removal with a product called “Fuel Right”. With quarterly treatments you can stop corrosion in its tracks and slowly eliminate sludge. Fuel Right has proven to be very effective in Home Heating fuel tanks, Marine fuel tanks and of course commercial fuels tanks across North America. Bluelake Enterprises Inc. is pleased to offers these worldclass products as viable and economical solutions. Peterbilt Exhibits Medium Duty Hybrid Technology On Capitol Hill

P

eterbilt Motors Company displayed the latest addition to its hybrid lineup, the Peterbilt Model 335 hybrid tractor, at CALSTART and the Hybrid Truck Users Forum’s (HTUF) “Hybrids on the Hill” event to demonstrate the progress of hybrid technology in the medium and heavy duty truck market, and explore how federal action can best support widespread commercialization. The latest addition to Peterbilt’s hybrid lineup, the new Model 335 hybrid tractor, utilizes Eaton’s Hybrid Electric Power System with an electric motor that assists the PACCAR PX-6 engine with supplemental torque for up to 40 percent fuel economy gains. The system stores energy during stopping through a process called regenerative braking, and then reuses it for acceleration. In addition to the Eaton Hybrid Electric Power System, the Model 335 hybrid tractor features the in-dash 7-inch PACCAR proprietary Hybrid System Monitor. The display provides information regarding fuel economy and battery state of charge, allowing the driver to modify behavior to maximize fuel economy through optimized use of the system. The display also provides full diagnostic capabilities for the hybrid system including system operating status. Additionally, Peterbilt currently offers in full production the Model 330 and Model 335 hybrid vehicles. The Model 335 hybrid utilizes components that provide an up to a 50 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, when configured for a utility

application. These fuel savings are realized through both an on road fuel economy gain, and an 80 percent reduction in engine idling, through electric operation of the Power Take Off (PTO) using the on board lithium ion batteries. The Model 330 hybrid is available with a 26,000 pound GVW rating, and can be configured for non CDL operation with hydraulic brakes for a greater range of driver options. Launching the vehicle electrically in an urban driving cycle can easily achieve fuel economy benefits in excess of 30 percent. Peterbilt is also developing two heavy duty hybrid configurations; a Model 320 hydraulic launch assist (HLA) vehicle for vocational and stop and go applications with production availability in late 2009, and a Model 386 hybrid electric developmental platform for long-haul applications.

Arrow Truck Sales Announces 4-Year / 400,000 Mile Warranty Option On Used Trucks

A

rrow Truck Sales has announced an unprecedented 4-year/400,000 mile comprehensive engine warranty option on pre-owned units. This program provides extended protection for the equipment purchaser who wants to take the worry out of buying used. With the addition of this new coverage plan, Arrow now offers the widest coverage of extended warranties for medium and heavy duty trucks in the industry. Unlike other used truck warranties in the marketplace, Arrow’s warranty includes full coverage (not just major components) during the entire 4 year period. In fact, Arrow’s warranty option is longer than many manufacturers standard new truck engine warranty. This new extended warranty plan is available on 2005 and newer Volvo VNLs with less than 500,000 miles. “Arrow Truck Sales continues to be a true innovator and cutting-edge leader in the used truck industry,” said Carl Heikel, Arrow’s President and CEO. “We have continually led the charge in providing extended warranty options to the used truck buyer. Buyer satisfaction, and exceeding our customers expectations, have truly been the key to Arrow’s success in the industry for nearly 60 years.” “We have always led the industry in this area,” said Lee Wallace, Arrow’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We began including a free 30-day warranty on our trucks in 2003 and started offering a 3 year/300,000 mile warranty program in 2007. Today, we offer an extended warranty that’s unmatched by any of our competitors. Our goal is take the worry out of buying used equipment.” Founded in 1950, Arrow is headquartered in Kansas City, MO and has 16 retail locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. National Truck League Announces

New Flexible Premium Options in Response to Economy

I

n response to economic uncertainty facing truckers today National Truck League (NTL) has just announced significantly increasing coverage options for its most popular trucking insurance program, the Trucker’s Income Replacement Plan. This plan provides truckers and their families the reassurance of knowing their income will be replaced to cover monthly expenses should an on or off the job injury prevent them from working. Since the inception of the Trucker’s Income Replacement Plan in 1990, “NTL has paid millions and millions of dollars in claims to truckers across the country," said Rod Stiller, president of NTL. "Today, Owner/Operators and their carriers are looking for more options. Some want more protection and some want to tailor their coverage to meet business needs and budgets." Prior coverage provided for a maximum lump sum payout up to $300,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefit along with a weekly benefit. With NTL’s customized new options Owner/Operators now have a range of Accidental Death & Dismemberment lump sum benefit to choose from of between $100,000 - $500,000 and also a new range of weekly benefit paid out between $400 - $1,000 per week. This flexibility allows Owner/ Operators more choice in coverage and corresponding premium. Stiller contends that the first priority is claims service and coverage but that choice and flexibility are especially important in today's economic times. The Trucker’s Income Replacement Plan is often sought out by Owner/Operators who have opted out of WSIB or CSST, or simply want to enhance their provincial workers' compensation program. For trucking companies, having the right insurance and health coverage plans helps to attract and retain quality people. Since 1988 National Truck League has provided a wide range of specialized products and services to the trucking industry. Their mission is to partner with the trucking industry to protect its trucks, team and profits. For more information visit www.nationaltruckleague.com

odern Logistics primarily focus to fulfill customers’ needs. It involves management of the various activities required to move benefits from their point of production to the customer. These benefits can either be in the form of tangible products which are manufactured, or intangible such as services provided to the customers. Each organization’s approach to Logistics management is different from one another. Some of these firms are more focused to produce these benefits on their own. Mack Trucks Brings Natural Gas Power To Refuse Applications

I

n response to the growing need for low-emission alternative fuel vehicles, Mack Trucks, has announced the availability of natural gas-powered engines for refuse applications. Mack officials made the announcement at a news conference during WasteExpo 2009. The MACK TerraPro Low Entry model is now available for order with heavy-duty natural gas engines supplied by Cummins Westport. The TerraPro Cabover model will be available later. The 9-liter Cummins Westport ISL G is rated at 320 hp, can use compressed (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG), and has a threeway catalytic converter to meet EPA’10 emissions standards. “We’re bringing the Mack tradition of application excellence to alternative fuel vehicles,” said Dennis Slagle, Mack president and CEO. “The natural gas products we’ve now brought to market will extend our position of leadership in refuse into this emerging segment.” Groot Industries, Inc., a major waste hauler in the Midwest, has already placed an order for MACK TerraPro Low Entry models

with ISL G engines. The 20 units will run on CNG and are scheduled to go into service in the Chicago area by the end of the year. “Refuse companies these days are expected to be environmental leaders in their communities,” said Brian Curry, director of fleet and facilities for Groot Industries. “We look for ways to serve customers with the cleanest and most efficient trucks available, which is why we were so interested in Mack’s natural gas solution. Our Mack TerraPros will help us reduce emissions and our carbon footprint, as well as lessening the U.S.’s dependence on foreign oil.” Mack officials have seen a growing number of municipalities mandate alternative fuel vehicles as a condition of contracts with refuse haulers. Currently, Mack is working with another Volvo Group company, Terracastus Technologies, to develop a “total solution” landfill gas product that offers fuel production technology combined with natural gas powered vehicles optimized for the landfill hauling application.

Roadcheck figures show trucking industry’s commitment to safety CTA says technology and government commitment to embracing change and incentives key to future reductions in out-of-service rates

F

igures for the 2009 Roadcheck Annual Safety Blitz have once again displayed the trucking industry’s high level of commitment to safety - national Roadcheck truck and driver statistics showed an 82% compliance rate for vehicles and 97% compliance rate for drivers in targeted enforcement this year. “Roadcheck figures since 2007 show small but consistent improvements in vehicle mechanical fitness and driver condition in the industry. Despite enormous pressures on the bottom-line of carriers as a result of this fiscal downturn, these Roadcheck figures are a shining example that the industry has the best people behind the wheel; support, maintenance and operations staff dedicated to safety and industry leaders that are firmly committed to investing in road safety, said CTA CEO David Bradley. However, CTA CEO Bradley said that neither the industry nor provincial governments should see these Roadcheck inspection figures as a plateau but as a challenge to make a safe industry even safer: “Technology is the key to improving both driver and vehicle performance. CTA has called on the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) to bring into force a mandatory Electronic-on-Board-Recording (EOBR) regime for hours of service compliance which will have a dramatic improvement on the safety performance of drivers. CTA is pleased

with CCMTA’s response and the process is underway to develop a National Safety Code Standard for EOBR’s. CTA is also calling on the federal government to bring in such mandatory technologies as roll stability for tractors which will improve the on-road safety performance of tractor-trailer combinations, added Bradley. Beyond regulatory changes designed to improve truck safety, CTA also sees a financial role for the federal and provincial governments: “Truck safety is not only improved by doing inspections; Canadian governments need to start thinking out-of-the-box and providing carriers with financial incentives, similar to environmental technology, that will encourage penetration of proven technologies like brake stroke monitoring devices, vehicle stability devices, and lane departure and collision warning system. In the U.S. the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), along with elected officials, are supportive of government incentives for such devices, said Bradley. Roadcheck is a combined effort between the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico) .

"The Paper in Your Truck" By Fred Watkin - CA

A

s a professional truck driver, your truck is your office. Now your office is probably about the same size as mine, but with definitely more horsepower, a more comfortable seat, and a better view out the window. One of the last things on your mind will be how to organize your paperwork into a system that makes filing a breeze. One of my most memorable experiences happened while articling as a CA student. Being the junior person in the firm, some of the more... um… flavourful engagements were given to me to complete. I inherited a small file, and the partner advised me to complete it as quickly as possible. Turned out the client was a fisherman, and kept his records on his boat, in a small box, on the floor in the corner. Boxes are good place to start for storing records, but cardboard and fishy water don’t mix too well, and it created a work environment for me that Captain Highliner would be proud of. Now a lesson in basic physics: when cardboard is completely wet, water then finds the next available dry substance, which unfortunately for me, was the myriad of receipts, envelopes, and other pieces of paper within the box. My corner of the office was empty for about a week and a half while I worked on this file. The gentleman was very nice, and I had a beautiful fresh Pacific salmon as a thank you. The best place for you to start with your receipts is to get a box. Cardboard is fine, but I would highly recommend a plastic filing box, with locking lid, available

from any Staples. Organize your files into the usual, such as fuel, maintenance, border and toll fees, meals, etc. Keep original documentation (such as purchase/lease agreements) in a place other than your truck, but keep a copy in the box. ROAD TODAY l JULY 2009

The Tradeshow Circuit By Bruce Outridge

W

ell, it’s that time of the year again and the truck shows are in full swing. It was great to meet many of you at the “Road Today Truck Show” the first official truck show for the magazine. Since we are in the middle of the season for truck shows and trade shows, I thought I would talk about the reason for attending these and what to get out of them. People are there for different reasons and since these shows can be expensive to be part of and attend, you may want to have a game plan for attending. For the general public usually it is just to see the big trucks in the show and shine and have a day together with the family. Sometimes, it’s because Dad is in the industry and it’s his way of letting his family and friends into his world. There is nothing wrong with that and it can be very rewarding for all to have a glimpse of the passion. Then, there are the drivers who are just there for the party, or need a place to layover for the weekend while waiting for a load. Take these two groups away and that leaves the rest of us. I ask you what your reason is since it can change your whole outlook as to why you’re there; If you’re a driver entering with your company, is your company trying to promote themselves to other professional drivers, or just showing off their equipment? If you as a company representative are there to attract other drivers then how you act at the show is just as important as the type of equipment you have on display. All drivers representatives should be acting accordingly, have knowledge of the type of driver the company is looking for and what the new driver can expect if he or she is hired on. ALK Releases PC*MILER 23 Product Line New Intermodal Feature Weighs Environmental Impact

A

LK Technologies, Inc. has announced the release of PC*MILER® 23, the North American transportation industry's first routing and mileage solution to include carbon emissions and intermodal analysis functionality. PC*MILER's twenty-third annual edition also includes critical map data updates such as truck restrictions and truck specific toll costs. The new PC*MILER Intermodal Analysis feature calculates alternative rail intermodal routes for truck shipments to run quick comparisons of truck and intermodal mileage, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions. Meanwhile the updated Points of Interest database can display small, medium, and large intermodal ramps throughout the U.S. and Canada. PC*MILER Intermodal Analysis is offered within PC*MILER|Spreadsheets and connects PC*MILER's highway and rail products. "ALK is pleased to be the first routing and mileage provider to make environmental impact an optional factor in daily operational choices," said Kara Jo Witkowski, senior product manager, PC*MILER Solutions for ALK. "The new features allow carriers, shippers and 3PLs to make better multi-modal decisions." PC*MILER 23 is an essential tool to predict and manage operating and transportation costs. It reduces out-of-route mileage, saving time, tolls, and fuel. For example, PC*MILER 23 offers expanded capabilities in toll calculation to include tolls determined by weight and truck axles. PC*MILER|Tolls now calculates weightbased tolls on the specific categories and rates applied by each individual toll authority, rates up to 136,000 pounds. Tolls based

on axles can be calculated for single and multiple trailer trucks up to 14 axles. Version 23 includes 27 discount toll programs and 68,300 unique toll paths. PC*MILER 23 users can enter a vehicle’s height, length, width and weight when generating routes. The application will generate mileage and directions taking those factors into account a particular benefit for oversized loads. Other notable updates include: • Updated truck restrictions – An additional 117,000 truck restriction and allowance enhancements are included. Weight restriction, weight allowance, and commercial vehicle constraints have been updated for 36 state and local municipalities in the U.S. and Canada. This includes more than 12,500 new weight allowances nationwide. • Database and routing improvements – PC*MILER’s highway and street level database contains the most current map data available and provides improved and faster address matching in PC*MILER|Streets. • Updated Canadian dangerous goods restrictions – PC*MILER|HazMat users will benefit from significant enhancements and dangerous goods classifications throughout Canada. PC*MILER runs on Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Linux platforms as well as IBM AS/400, iSeries and System i midrange and mainframe computers. For more information, visit www. pcmiler.com.

Lakshmi Mittal, the steel baron, made the NRI dream a reality when he became the third richest man in the world. Wonder if Mittal would have made it so big had he decided to package the recipe of his favourite mango pickle internationally? Maybe, maybe not. But many enterprising immigrants-tobe, in their quest to make mega bucks abroad, have started learning achaar, chutney recipes as well as the Yoga asanas, even before their visas get the approval stamp. A short-term crash course is all it takes to have the firangis eating out of their hands. Says Raj Suri, a media professional who has applied for immigration to

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.”

‘Hindi movies are overrated’ Past allegations of underworld links, controversies down South, her failed relationships and a career in Bhojpuri films. BT gets actor Nagma in the hot seat... Actor Nagma’s not been around for a while. She has been travelling a lot and doing regional movies. BT caught up with the actor...

On keeping a low profile of late: My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working

on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.

Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.

What went wrong down south? I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.

It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.

Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma

End of her political career? When the controversy

erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.

Personal relationships not working out: I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

Navistar Announces 2010 Emissions Pricing on International Trucks Prices to Increase $6,000 to $8,000 Depending on Model

N

avistar has announced 2010-compliant MaxxForce Advanced EGR engine technology will increase International truck prices $6,000-$8,000, depending on engine model. • Vehicles with mid-range diesel engines, including the MaxxForce 7, MaxxForce DT, MaxxForce 9 and MaxxForce 10, will increase by $6,000. • Vehicles with heavy-duty diesel engines, including the MaxxForce 11 and MaxxForce 13, will increase by $8,000. Increases will come in the form of a non-discountable surcharge applied to each vehicle’s base price. To meet the 2010 EPA emissions requirements for diesel engines, International trucks will be powered by MaxxForce Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines with proven technologies including: Advancements in fuel injection: The next-generation fuel injection systems are capable of delivering fuel into the cylinder multiple times per cycle and at higher pressures. Utilization of one or more pre- and post-injections along with the main injection event means combustion can take place over a longer period and be more complete, resulting in less creation of NOx emissions.

Improved air intake management: The advanced EGR system utilizes dual turbochargers. The first, smaller turbocharger spins up immediately to provide boost at lower engine speeds, while the second, larger turbo provides maximum power at higher engine RPMs. The company also placed an inter-stage cooler between the turbochargers to help reduce air temperature going into the cylinders and allow more air to be packed into the large second stage turbo for maximum power at high engine speeds. Combining these features with the increased EGR rate means the combustion in the cylinder occurs slower and at a lower temperature, generating less NOx. Improved electronic calibration: Engine controllers previously utilized pre-programmed lookup table to determine the fuel-air mixture to burn. Increases in computing power allow the engine controller to continuously calculate the optimum mix to achieve maximum power and efficiency in many different situations. Proprietary combustion technology: The redesigned combustion bowl combines with the higher fuel injection pressure to break the fuel up into a finer mist spread more evenly inside the cylinder, resulting in a more complete and cleaner burn.

Road to Success in Trucking By Melroy Coelho

W

hat does it take to succeed in the trucking business? Lots of courage, hard work, good communication skills, common sense and a sprinkling of fairy dust. Having said that there are certain key factors that are common to most well run companies. The following points can be used as a business primer for the new entrant to the industry or a refresher for the experienced business manager that is constantly putting out fires. What does it take to acquire new customers, maintain existing customers and ultimately become a preferred carrier? • Provide consistent service at a price that is equal to the value you provide. • Fulfill your brand promise whatever it maybe (deliver on time, provide excellent service, faster than air, on time every time, your freight is in good hands...) • Ensure your front line (those that interact with customers) employees are empowered to resolve issues or are able to escalate issues to higher management and get them resolved as per company policy and to your customer’s satisfaction. • Provide product and service value that can be measured (Toronto to Los Angeles in ... days, next day delivery within the GTA, etc.) What does it take to improve employee productivity & satisfaction and consequently become a preferred employer? • Clearly defined job profile and job description. • Competitive wages, salaries and benefits. • Fair and equitable hiring, retention and dispute resolution policies. • Reviews employees performance regularly and provides constructive feedback. • Fast, effective decision making and implementation of decisions. • Communicates requirements and objectives to employees & lets them manage how to achieve them by a defined date. • Company consistently meets expectations set by customers, employees and stakeholders. What does it take to increase revenue and profitability? • Knowledge of internal and external costs and market rates • Effective payables and receivables management to produce

positive cash flow. • Cost budgets set on a sliding scale so that when revenue decreases, costs are reduced proportionately. What does it take to optimize equipment utilization? • Monitor and manage utilization of equipment to produce fast return on investment • Optimize ratio of trailers per tractor so as to maximize revenue and reduce costs. • Track and trace equipment that is parked, in-transit and at customers locations so that operations can make profitable decisions to deploy equipment where it is needed. What does it take to create a competitive edge in the marketplace? • Consistently manage and meet (or exceed) expectations of employees, customers, suppliers & vendors. • Manage challenging issues head on with genuine concern to arrive at a win-win solution for all parties. • Communicate with clear and simple intent – ask for the business, be clear about what you can and cannot do, charge based on the value you provide (low price for no frills service, above average price for premium grade service) and most importantly thank customers for their business. RTS Transportation Specialists Inc. recently received a 5 year recertification from the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) for its truck driver course that meets industry standards. Founded in 1986 as a national, nonprofit organization, PTDI has long recognized the need to ensure that entry-level drivers are responsible, safe professionals who adhere to established industry standards. As a result, the organization facilitated the development of skill, curriculum, and certification standards by bringing together representatives from various concerns of the trucking industry, including driver training schools and trucking safety interest groups. Together these organizations established standards that incorporate the Federal Highway Administration’s “Minimum Standards for Training Tractor-Trailer Drivers” and ensure that students are adequately trained to safely handle the demands of the truck driving profession. “Our entire team at KRTS is very proud of all of the awards and accreditations we have received over the years. There are none that are more important than our PTDI certified course” commented Kim Richardson, President of KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc. KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc. is currently seeking accreditation at two other Ontario facilities. If these two programs are accredited KRTS will have the most certified PTDI courses in Canada. Schools applying for PTDI course certification must undergo an on-site visit from an evaluation team that examines the school’s records and practices to verify compliance with the PTDI standards. A Certification Committee then reviews the results of the on-site and other supporting documents before certifying the course. KRTS Inc. is in their 20th year of business and is one of the oldest professional training facilities in the country. For more information contact, Kim Richardson, President of KRTS, at 1-800-771-8171.

Hendrickson Joins U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership

H

endrickson has announced that four of its divisions, Truck Suspension Systems, Trailer Suspension Systems, Auxiliary Axle Systems and Bumper and Trim, have joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership. This is an innovative collaboration between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry, designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. Hendrickson will contribute to the Partnership’s goal to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of our freight operations. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog. By joining SmartWay Transport Partnership, Hendrickson demonstrates its strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility.

By Dr. Christopher H. Singh

A

ppendicitis is a serious condition that can become fatal very quickly if not treated. As a result, it is important for professional truck drivers to be able to recognize its symptoms and seek proper medical help as soon as possible. In this article, I am going to discuss what appendicitis is as well as its causes, symptoms and treatments. Let’s get started. Essentially, appendicitis is sudden inflammation or swelling of the appendix. Your appendix is finger-like structure that projects out from your colon on the lower right side of your abdomen. In most people, their appendix is about 7 cm long. Scientist are not completely clear as to its function, however most believe that it plays a role in the body’s immune system. Appendicitis is fairly common as 1 in 15 people develop it in their life time. Anyone can develop it, but it is most common between the ages of 10 to 30. The most common cause of appendicitis is a blockage due to food waste or stool. When this occurs, bacteria can subsequently invade the area causing swelling and the production of pus. If this situation is not treated quickly, the appendix may rupture and spill its contents into the abdominal cavity. This may lead to an infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity which can be a dangerous situation. A person suffering from appendicitis may experience variety of symptoms that
