Nissan Canada has announced it will reopen its online reservation system for its first allocation of model year 2012 Nissan LEAFs at noon on Saturday, October 22nd. Reservations are open to those who live within the vicinity (65 km) of the 27 Nissan LEAF certified dealers across Canada and who registered on www.nissan.ca/leaf before October 9th. The 350 Nissan LEAFs available for Canadian retail customers in this first allotment for MY12 will begin delivery in the coming months. The MY12 units will be identical in spec and pricing to the MY11 Nissan LEAFs. At a starting price of $38,395, the Nissan LEAF is eligible for provincial rebates of $8,500 in Ontario and

$8,000 in Quebec. As with the first wave of reservations which happened in August, Nissan will carefully manage the purchase process from online registration, until the customer drives the Nissan LEAF home and plugs it into a personal charging dock. “We’re already well into the delivery of the first Nissan LEAFs to Canadian consumers and the feedback has echoed excitement at being at the forefront of the electric mobility movement and pure driving pleasure,” said Judy Wheeler, Director of Marketing, Nissan Canada Inc. “We learned through the first wave of reservations that Canadians are very serious about the Nissan LEAF. The

majority of those who ‘reserved’ a car have either completed their purchase or are continuing through the purchase process.” Based on the enthusiastic response to the first wave of reservations, Nissan Canada anticipates selling out of all MY12 units quickly - demonstrating Canadians’ passion for innovation and zero emission mobility. If more than 350 people decide to purchase the Nissan LEAF they will be first in line for the next wave of reservations opening in spring 2012. Through Model Year 12, Nissan expects to release around 600 Nissan LEAFs on the Canadian market.

(NC)—2011 marks the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund’s 25th year of providing consumer protection to Ontarians. Created in 1986, the Fund was the first of its kind in Canada, and since the Ministry of Consumer Services’ introduction of new legislation in 2010, provides up to $45,000 per eligible claim. The Fund is part of a series of consumer protection programs covered under the new Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA). “Fortunately, the great majority of vehicle sales go well in Ontario, so the Compensation Fund serves more as a safety net and confidence builder,” says Peter Eatson, Chair of the Compensation Fund and also a vehicle dealer from Pe-

terborough. “The fact that we a

have dealer-supported fund to cover vehicle sales issues says a lot about the industry and about how much our society values consumer protection.” “We can never completely eliminate bad vehicle deals, but we’re reducing them by encouraging people to buy from regulated Ontario-registered dealers,” says Carl Compton, Executive Director of the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC). Along with access to the Compensation Fund, Ontario’s legislation requires all-in pricing, vehicle history disclosure and provides rescission rights under certain circumstances. You can learn more about the Compensation Fund online at BuyWithConfidence.ca.

(NC)—Provincial legislation passed in 2010 now requires all Ontario-registered vehicle dealers to inform buyers of all material facts and information about a vehicle’s history, including any accident damage of more than $3,000. “Consumers should ask registered dealers for a vehicle history report, such as Carproof or CARFAX,” says Carey Smith, Director of Investigations of the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC), Ontario’s regulator of vehicle sales. “These reports will provide you with the vehicle’s reported accident history and other facts which may be relevant to your buying decision. Most deal-

ers willingly provide a vehicle history report for prospective purchasers to review.” “Buying a vehicle that’s been in an accident is not necessarily a bad thing—but you need to know if it’s been in an accident, and what kind of work has been done to it, because you often can’t tell. The issue is knowing the history and facts and making an informed decision,” adds Smith. To benefit from Ontario’s motor vehicle consumer protection laws, always buy from an Ontario-registered dealer. To find an Ontario-registered dealer, look for the official blue and yellow decal or visit BuyWithConfidence.ca.

Use a fuel consumption gauge to help you save

(NC)—Many drivers have reported that they use up to 15 per cent less fuel by acting on the feedback they get from an instantaneous fuel consumption gauge. If your vehicle does not have a display, it may be possible to install one. Many vehicles manufactured after 1996 can easily be retrofitted with display systems that provide a range of information, from the cost of fuel per trip to an estimate of the vehicle’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. And you get the information in real

time so you can react accordingly. Some newer vehicles not only report fuel consumption but also analyze speed variations, shift points for manual transmissions and driving behaviours such as acceleration and braking times. Natural Resources Canada has a number of gauges available for loan to driving educators. If you’re interested, contact autosmart@nrcan.gc.ca. Are you a cell phone offender? By Melissa Yue

(NC)—It’s easy to spot cell phone offenders. They whiz past you on the road, yakking away on their device while cutting people off and running red lights. In tight, crowded places, they talk loudly so everyone has no choice but to listen to the latest celebrity gossip. And if you’re out with such offenders, they’ll answer their phone and have a 15-minute conversation while you sit uncomfortably, pretending not to eavesdrop as you pick lint off your shirt. Cell phone offenders definitely earn a bad rap these days. And if you’re one of them, here are some tips to banish the wrongs and make it right: 1 Resist the urge to answer every call. If your phone rings while you’re out with a friend

or on a date, let your voicemail pick up the call. It is poor etiquette to answer the call and talk for longer than a few minutes. Respect the time of the person who is talking to you faceto-face. 2 Focus on driving. Talking or texting on the road is a major distraction and can cost you a ticket or demerit points in some provinces. It also risks your safety and the safety of those who share the road with you. 3 Use your cell phone for a good cause. Donating via text message is all the rage now and you can support charities like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada that provide hope to the world’s poor. Text “CCFC” to 45678 to make a $10 donation. Terms at: www.mobilegiving.ca.

(NC)—Trick-or-treaters, beware. The scariest place to be on Halloween isn’t a cemetery or haunted house: it’s on the road with an impaired or distracted driver. Safety experts warn that with so many children outside in the dark and many adults attending parties, the consequences of careless driving are even more severe. “Halloween is really the perfect storm,â€? says Karen Benner, spokesperson for Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “You have low light conditions, large groups of excited children in the street, adults who have been celebrating and drivers who may not be paying full attention.â€? Benner’s fears are not unfounded: recent statistics show that 80 per cent of car collisions are caused by distracted drivers, and 20 per cent of traffic fatalities among children occurred after they ran into the street. According to MADD Canada, four Canadians are killed and 190 are injured each day in impaired driving crashes. “These actions, and their tragic consequences, are 100 per cent preventable,â€? says Denise Dubyk, national president of MADD Canada. “If you’re hosting a party, provide options for safe travel home directly on the party invitations: public transit, taxi services or having a dedicated designated driver for guests are great options,â€? says Dubyk. “As a guest, make your feelings about impaired driving known—friends don’t let friends drink and drive.â€? Parents can help keep their trick-ortreaters safe this Halloween by ensuring they are visible to drivers. Allstate Canada offers these safety tips from goodhandsadvice.ca: • Bring a flashlight with you; • Make sure Halloween costumes and masks don’t obstruct your child’s vision; • Stick reflective tape to shoes, gloves, costumes and candy bags; • Stay close to your kids at all times and keep clear of the road.

Drive prepared, alert and safe all winter

(NC)—As the seasons change and we move into winter driving conditions, Canadian drivers need to be extra conscientious on the road as they travel to places such as work or holiday gatherings. While drivers try to be aware of their surroundings during difficult driving conditions, a recent survey on road safety and driving near large trucks found that some Canadians are uneasy around these vehicles, in part due to a lack of understanding of how large trucks operate differently from a regular passenger vehicle. The top concern — identified by close to 30 per cent of respondents — was that trucks would merge into their lane. At the same time, roughly the same percentage could not identify where the blind spots on trucks are. As part of UPS’s commitment to road safety, UPS ‘Circle of Honour’ drivers - an elite group of active driv-

ers who have steered clear of accidents for 25 years or more - offer these safe winter driving tips: • Don’t get blindsided — Large trucks have large blind spots in front, to the side, and behind them. Avoid passing trucks on the right side as this is the side with the largest blind spot. When in doubt, drivers should remem-

ber that if they can’t see the truck driver’s face in the trucks’ side-view mirrors, they are likely in a blind spot. • Give them their space — Trucks are much heavier than an average car, and as a result need much more time and distance to stop, so drivers should avoid cutting in front of trucks or braking suddenly in front of them.

family safe,” says Bill Hume vice-president of Hankook Tire Canada. Hume notes that simple preparations and preventative measures can enhance safety and reduce the stress associated with winter road conditions. These three important winter driv-

ing tips can help get you through many slippery situations: 1. Keep your distance: Always leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Doing so will give you enough time to brake in a controlled manner and time to react in case of an emergency. Stay vigilant of road conditions, and increase the space if you detect or suspect black ice. A general rule of thumb is that if there are icicles on your windshield wipers or frost on your side view mirrors, there is a good chance that there is black ice on the road. 2. Understand your brakes: If your car is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), hit the brakes and let the system work for you: your ABS will pump the brakes at timed intervals without locking your wheels, enabling you to stop safely. It’s normal to feel pulsation in the brake pedal, that’s the ABS working. A lot of people have a tendency to release the brakes as the ABS kicks in; do not lift your foot until you come to a stop. If your vehicle is not equipped with ABS, pump your brakes to avoid locking your wheels.

• Don’t get caught on a roll — Large trucks can roll back when starting on an incline, therefore it is important to stay at least 15 feet behind them when on an upward slope. • Don’t get sucked in — Larger vehicles create more air turbulence at highway speeds; keep a steady grip on the steering wheel when approaching them. • Wipe away the spray — Drivers should turn on their windshield wipers when approaching trucks in wet road conditions to increase visibility. Collectively, ‘Circle of Honour’ drivers have logged more than eight billion kilometres and more than 147,244 years of safe driving through their careers. That’s enough kilometres to circle the earth 188,000 times. More information on safe driving tips can be found online at www.ups. com.

Prepare for Canadian winter driving with three easy tips

(NC)—Unless you plan to hibernate this winter, you will inevitably be faced with some challenging road conditions in the coming months. “Knowing how to handle the road in harsh weather is one of the most important steps in keeping you and your

3. Use appropriate tires: Studies have shown that at -14 C all-season tires lose up to 60 per cent of their grip compared to winter tires. Unlike allseason tires, winter tires are made with special rubber compounds that stay soft even at very low temperatures. A softer tire will stick to the road better, and give your vehicle more traction for optimal control. Some winter tires like the Hankook Winter i*cept evo are designed for high performance and offer a smooth ride with great grip on icy roads. If you plan on doing a lot of driving in the winter months having the right winter tire will make a big difference. For more information on how winter tires function, speak to your local tire dealer. It is also important to stay alert, slow down, and stay in control—the three key elements of safe winter driving. Drive according to highway and weather conditions, and keep an eye on your car’s maintenance throughout the season. Be prepared and don’t let winter ruin your road trips. What is a hybrid vehicle anyway? (NC)—Hybrid electric vehicles combine the internal combustion engine and fuel tank of a conventional vehicle with an electric motor powered by a battery. The combination gives motorists the driving range and convenient refuelling capabilities of a conventional vehicle, with more environmental benefits. Hybrids achieve improvements in fuel efficiency by using an electric motor to supplement engine power. Many hybrids can even operate at low speeds using only the electric motor. Their batteries never need to be plugged in and are recharged by a combination of the internal combustion engine and by capturing energy that would otherwise be lost when braking. Many hybrids also shut off the internal combustion engine when the ve-

hicle is stopped or waiting at an intersection to eliminate wasting fuel from idling. So if most of your driving is around the city, your fuel consumption and costs with a hybrid could be a fraction of what you are now paying. Many auto manufacturers in North America now offer hybrid models. Furthermore, as the market expands, the cost differential between hybrids and conventional vehicles is declining. Is it starting to sound like a hybrid might be the answer to your needs? You can get more information about hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca. And don’t forget, Natural Resources Canada’s annual listing of the most fuel-efficient vehicles will be posted on the site in November.

Workers with the Toronto Transit Commission will soon be subject to random drug testing. The TTC board approved the move on Wednesday — the first transit system in Canada to take the step. “At this stage there’s lots of details that we need to work out,”

said TTC chair Karen Stintz. “We need to work out how often employees get tested. What happens after they receive a test. What happens with a positive test. What those costs are and how we’re going to phase that in.” “Riders can have the knowledge that we have random drug

and alcohol testing at the commission and we’re doing all we can to have a safe operating environment - and that operators are fit for duty when they show up to work,” said Stintz. TTC management has been pushing for random drug testing for years. The final straw was an accident on Aug. 30, where Jadranka Petrova, 43, was killed. The driver, 51-year-old William Ainsworth, is charged with criminal negligence causing death and marijuana possession. The president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, which represents most TTC workers, says the new policy is “a violation of our Charter rights.” The TTC says since 2005 there have been at least 78 incidents involving employees and drug and alcohol - but it’s unclear whether those incidents happened on the job. 13 Oct 20 - Nov 01, 2011 A crash course in minor collisions By Glenn Cooper

As the American and Canadian governments prepare to announce the details of a new perimeter security deal, the Canadian Trucking Alliance recently met with Alan Bersin, commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to discuss several outstanding border issues that continue to affect Canadian motor carriers and thicken congestion at trade gateways. Overall, CTA is encouraged with the Commissioner’s stated willingness to look into issues that have long been a challenge for Canadian carriers operating south of the border. Some of the topics CTA addressed with Mr. Bersin, include: A solution to the issue of repositioning empty foreign trailers by Canadian-based drivers engaged in international commerce; the burdensome requirement that all liquid cargo residues in empty tanker trailers, no matter how minimal, be manifested prior to entering the U.S.; re-establishing the once-common practice of in-transit domestic shipments which travel through parts of the U.S. in between two Canadian points; and mutual recognition and harmonization of “trusted trader” programs between Canada and the U.S. On the latter issue, Mr. Bersin was receptive to CTA’s concerns and assured that solutions would be outlined in the “Beyond the Border” security initiative soon to be announced by President Barack Obama and Prime Minster Stephen Harper. He hinted this would involve streamlining some aspects of the U.S. Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program and the Canadian Partners in Protection (PIP), as well as the bi-national Free And Secure Trade (FAST) program. He also suggested that new pre-inspection and pre-clearance measures for credentialed transporters would be part of the action plan, but emphasised he would like to see more carriers and shippers certified under these voluntary trusted trader programs in order to take advantage of the benefits. Some headway was made on a few other issues CTA has repeatedly addressed with U.S. officials, including greater flexibility in repositioning foreign empty trailers and examining different approaches towards in-transit shipments and residue reporting requirements for trusted traders. “Mr. Bersin indicated he does want to find a ‘balanced way’ of dealing with these issues,” said Bradley. “These are all good signs, but as always, the proof will be in the pudding when the Better Borders Working Group makes its report in the near future.”

(NC)—You hear the sound of crunching metal, your heart is racing, your palms are sweating—you’ve just been in an accident. It’s minor and thank goodness no one has been injured, but what now? Once you’ve caught your breath, there are certain things that you need to do to ensure that your day doesn’t get any worse. Accident planning and awareness are crucial, as every year 500,000 Canadians are involved in auto collisions. “Auto accidents are not something that any driver wants to think about,” says Aviva insurance expert Mauro Convertini. “But being prepared for a collision makes a very stressful situation a little more manageable.” Convertini suggests the following to ease the post-accident process: • Safety first: Make sure that you and the occupants of your car are safe and move off the road to prevent further injury. • Make a list: Thinking clearly is difficult after a collision. Remove the pressure of trying to remember what you need to do by writing a list and keeping it in the glove compartment. • Exchange information: Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance company information, driver’s license numbers and license plates with each individual involved in the accident—all of this data will be necessary when filing an accident report and an insurance claim. • Photograph the damage: Snap a picture of the damage. Photos will help settle any disputes about the extent of damage to the vehicles. • File an accident report: Most provinces require that you report any accident where damage exceeds a specified amount to a collision reporting centre or the police. Accidents do happen so being prepared is a driver’s best option. More information on what to do after you’ve been in an accident is available from your insurance broker or online at avivacanada.com.
