CANADA MOURNS JACK LAYTON

Body to lie in state in Ottawa, Toronto

The body of NDP Leader Jack Layton will lie in state in Ottawa and Toronto before his state funeral Saturday. The lying-in-state will be at the House of Commons foyer in Ottawa and will be open to the public from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.Thursday. People in Toronto will also have the chance to pay their respects, with the lying-in-state proceeding to Toronto City Hall on Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Lying-in-state is a term used to describe the tradition whereby the remains of the deceased rest on view, with a vigil, to allow officials and the

public to pay their final respects, according to the Department of Canadian Heritage. Layton’s funeral Saturday in Toronto will be open to the public. The NDP confirmed Tuesday that the funeral for Layton, who died Monday morning at the age of 61, will be held at 2 p.m. ET at Roy Thomson Hall in the city’s downtown. Roy Thompson Hall holds 2500 people. About 1700 seats will be invited guests, including MPs, senators, premiers, and Layton’s family and friends. Officials expect the remaining 800 seats won’t be enough to hold members of the public and are working out details on overflow access.

New Democrat MPs are hosting open houses Tuesday, offering books of condolence for their constituents to sign at their offices across the country. Those who want to express their sympathies or share stories about Layton but can’t make it in person to one of the 103 offices are encouraged to sign a virtual book of condolence on the NDP’s website. A number of Liberal and Conservative MPs are also hosting books of condolence in their constituency offices. The NDP are asking for donations to the Broadbent Institute in memory of Layton in lieu of flowers. The Broadbent Institute is an NDP-affiliated think tank that was announced at the

party’s 50th anniversary convention in June. It’s named for former NDP leader Ed Broadbent, a close friend of Layton’s. The state funeral was offered to Layton’s widow Olivia Chow by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday. He left Tuesday for a trip to Canada’s North but will attend Saturday’s funeral with his wife Laureen. In addition to the books of condolence at NDP MP constituency offices, books for the public to sign will also be available at Toronto City Hall and on Parliament Hill. Layton had fought prostate cancer since 2010, but in July announced he faced a second, undisclosed cancer.

Jack Layton’s work will go on, NDP vows

Members of the NDP say they will take time to mourn the loss of their leader and then carry on with the work started by Jack Layton. NDP MPs and party staff were struck with grief on Monday following Layton’s death but still talked about moving forward. “There are going to be some tears today and we’re going to take some appropriate days to remember Jack and to remember what he gave us,” the NDP’s president Brian Topp said. “And then we are going to do what I know he wanted us to do, which is continue his work.” Topp met with Layton on Saturday at his home in Toronto, along with the NDP leader’s chief of staff, Anne McGrath and Layton’s wife and fellow NDP MP, Olivia Chow. Layton and his team were still hopeful he would overcome his cancer, but it was clear he was very ill, according to Topp, and they discussed scenarios for the party’s future should he lose the battle. Layton, who died at home early Monday after a battle with cancer, will be given a state funeral in Toronto on Saturday. Layton led the party to a historic high on May 2 when the NDP won 103 seats and Layton won the title of Official Opposition Leader. Twelve weeks

later, he announced he was taking time off from the job he had worked so hard and long to get because of a new cancer diagnosis. Quebec MP Nycole Turmel was appointed by the party to fill in for Layton, who wanted to be back at work in time for Parliament’s fall session. Turmel was handpicked by Layton as his choice to step into his shoes, and in a letter to Canadians Layton said he wanted her to continue as his replacement until a permanent successor is elected. Layton wrote that a new leader should be chosen “as early as possible” in 2012, “so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.” The party’s next steps, short-term and long-term, will likely be discussed in further detail by the entire caucus at their next meeting. The NDP’s summer policy meeting in Quebec City is scheduled to take place Sept. 13-14, but the party is discussing whether to change the date of the gathering. While Layton was ill, NDP MPs and party staff were reluctant to entertain the possibility that a permanent replacement would need to be chosen or to speculate on what would happen to the party should Layton not return to work. He was viewed by many as the brand of the NDP. Reprinted with permission from CBC.ca

Goderich to receive $5M in disaster relief

Premier Dalton McGuinty has announced that the Ontario government will allocate $5 million to a disaster relief fund to help Goderich, Ont., after a powerful tornado ripped through the town’s centre on Sunday. McGuinty said the funds will be put toward cleanup, recovery, and to help homeowners and businesses in cases where their own insurance won’t cover the damages. Environment Canada has confirmed that the tornado that ripped through Goderich, Ont., on Sunday afternoon — causing massive damage and killing a man, as well as injuring dozens — was an F3. Winds of roughly 280 km/h carved a path about 500 metres wide at one point through the town’s centre, he added. “To the south of that and to the north of that, if you go far enough, you’ll see no damage occurring, but along that 500-metre path through the downtown core, quite a bit of damage,”

he said. McGuinty, who thanked the town’s leadership and emergency responders, said it was the most extensive devastation he’d seen in 21 years of public office. The tornado was on the ground on Sunday afternoon for approximately 20 kilometres, Environment Canada said. It killed Norman Laberge, 61, of Lucknow, Ont., who was working in a salt mine, and injured at least 37 people. Thunderstorm warnings were in place and a tornado warning was issued for 3:48 p.m. ET — just 12 minutes before it struck, CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe said. Goderich, a community of about 8,000 that’s renowned for its beautiful sunsets, parks and beaches, is on the eastern shore of Lake Huron about 225 kilometres west of Toronto. Chemo drug shortages possible, hospitals warned Some drugs used to treat cancer, infections and other ailments in hospitals could be in short supply, Health Canada says. The list includes 17 drugs used to treat leukemia, breast and ovarian cancer and other tumours and sarcomas. Some are radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine tests such as heart stress tests, while others are antibiotics given by injection to treat serious infections in hospital. Health Canada said its recent assessment identified deficiencies in manufacturing at the company’s plant, so only drugs deemed medically necessary from the plant can be imported. But the supply of those drugs could be affected by

manufacturing problems. Canadian doctors and pharmacists have been clamouring for advance notice of shortages through a central registry, as exists in the U.S. They say a registry wouldn’t solve the supply problems, but it would help hospitals to plan better. In December 2010, a survey by the Canadian Pharmacists Association suggested medication shortages have become a serious problem for patients, doctors and druggists. Nearly 94 per cent of pharmacists surveyed said at the time said they had trouble finding medications to fill a prescription in the previous year.

Shortages of both hospital medications and prescriptions filled at community pharmacies can be caused by a variety of problems along the drug supply change, including: - Manufacturing problems. - Supplies of raw materials. - Companies that cease making a drug that has become less profitable. Jason Kurtz, associate director of communications for Ben Venue, said unplanned down-time and capital improvements, such as the construction of a new facility used to manufacture chemotherapy drugs, can also contribute. BHARAT MATA MANDIR Canada needs a health-care ombudsman to address complaints about poor medical treatment, a new poll suggests. The poll was part of the Canadian Medical Association annual report card on health care, released Monday at the group’s conference in St. John’s. “Patients are too often lost in the shuffle in health care,” said CMA president Dr. Jeff Turnbull. The report card looked at attitudes on topics such as adopting a Canadian patient health charter to ensure accountability, a complaint mechanism, funding models for health care and the next federalprovincial health agreement.

Respondents felt strongly that a patient health charter should include recourse for those who receive poor health service, with 87 per cent saying they support a mechanism for citizens to complain about poor health service. About 86 per cent supported including an independent ombudsman for complaints about poor health service in the patient health charter. Those surveyed were more divided about whether the federalprovincial health-care agreement should take a national or jurisdictional approach, with 52 per cent preferring one national in scope with all provinces agreeing on how

the system will be funded, delivered and made accountable. Similarly, 49 per cent chose a model where provinces and territories receive a certain amount of funding for health care to spend as they see fit. The other 46 per cent felt a portion of each provinces and territories’ funding should be held back until performance targets are met. Five per cent did not answer. Ipsos Reid conducted the poll between July 5 and July 8, using an online survey of 1,026 Canadian adults and a telephone survey of 1,000 Canadian adults on July 6 and 7. Godhra train carnage: 11 get death, 20 to serve life term

Ahmedabad - Eleven convicts in the Godhra train burning case were handed down death sentence while 20 others were given life imprisonment by a special court in the 2002 incident that left 59 ‘kar sevaks’ dead and triggered riots which claimed over 1,200 lives in Gujarat. Considering the case as “rarest of rare”, Special Judge PR Patel pronounced death penalty for 11 out of the 31 convicted in the case while 20 others were sentenced to life imprisonment. “The court after looking into their active role in the conspiracy and setting afire of the S6 coach of Sabarmati Express train near Godhra gave death penalty to 11 persons,” public prosecutor JM Panchal said. The court also slapped punishment on them under various other sections, which will be concurrent with their life term. The prosecution had sought death sentence for all the 31 convicts, saying that it was a heinous act. On February 22, the court had convicted all the 31 while accepting the prosecution’s contention that there was a conspiracy behind the incident and convicted 31 under various sections of the IPC like 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy). They were also convicted under IPC Section 147, 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 323, 324,325,326 (causing hurt), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds), various sections of the Indian Railways Act, Prevention of Damages to Public Property Act and Bombay Police Act. The court had acquitted 63 others in the coach burning incident that happened near Godhra railway station. Defence counsel IM Munshi said the convicts will definitely appeal against the punishment

awarded to them. Fol l o w ing the Godhra train burning incident on February 27, 2002, large scale c o m munal violence h a d broken out in var ious parts of Gujarat in which over 1,200 persons, mainly belonging to the minority community, died. Disagreeing with the judgment, Munshi said, “The court has not believed the first theory which said that the inflammable substance was poured from outside. The court has agreed to the second theory that the accused persons had entered the coach by cutting the vestibule between the S-6 and S-7 coaches and poured the petrol in it.” He said the case of conspiracy had come forth almost four months after the incident. On February 22, the court had accepted the theory of criminal conspiracy behind the burning

of the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express carrying ‘kar sevaks’ returning from Ayodhya based on scientific evidence, statement of witnesses and circumstantial and documentary evidence placed on record. The trial conducted inside the Sabarmati Central Jail here began in June 2009 with the framing of charges against 94 accused in the carnage. In all, 253 witnesses were examined during the trial and over 1,500 documentary evidences were presented before the court by the Gujarat police. There were a total of 134 accused in the case, out of which 14 were released due to lack of evidence, five were juvenile, five died during proceedings of over nine years and 16 are absconding.

Flaherty, Carney take cautious tone on economy Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney told MPs on Friday that the turmoil working its way through financial markets will bring uncertainty, but the bank is ready to deal with any problems. Carney was speaking to the Commons finance committee, which had asked him and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to share their views on the outlook for Canada’s economy. Carney took a cautious tone in his remarks, explaining that while there are many threats to growth, the central bank is monitoring developments closely and has not made any major changes to its outlook recently. Carney renewed his call for productivity improvements, noting that U.S. firms have invested heavily in becoming more productive while credit is comparatively cheap. The recent U.S. debt ceiling crisis has the potential to negatively impact Canada, but it’s not yet clear to what

extent, he said. That’s because the solution called for cutting more than $1 trillion in spending over the next decade, and it’s not yet known where the cuts will be made. Earlier, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told committee members the

economic crisis in the U.S. and Europe will inevitably have an impact on Canada, but the economy here is growing, albeit slowly. Flaherty said the current crisis is largely due to lack of confidence in the ability of governments to lower their

debt levels. Fixing the problem will require bold action by the U.S. and other governments, he said. He continued his refrain that Canada is comparatively better off than other countries but not immune to the global problems. Deputy Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem, speaking after Carney and Flaherty, said the central bank predicts “roughly flat” or “possible slightly negative” economic growth for Canada in the second quarter. In its July Monetary Policy Report, he said, the bank forecast a “fairly weak” second quarter, with growth of 1.5 per cent in gross domestic product. Macklem said subsequent data prompted the bank to downgrade its projections from July. He told MPs, however, that the bank expects the Canadian economy to “recover” in the second half of the year. Indian Govt holds hectic consultations as Anna’s fast enters 8th day

The govt on Tuesday held hectic consultations to find a way out of the logjam with Team Anna de-

manding that it mandate somebody officially for opening a political dialogue on the Lokpal issue. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee held talks with senior ministers, including Sharad Pawar and Vilasrao Deshmukh in New Delhi on Tuesday, both of whom are from Maharashtra, a state from where Hazare hails. Deshmukh, as chief minister, has the experience of successfully dealing with the situation arising out of earlier fasts undertaken by Hazare in the state. Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary U C Sarangi had held three rounds of talks with Hazare in

the last few days and has now gone back to Mumbai. The parleys Mukherjee held with Pawar and Deshmukh come close on the heels of the talks Sarangi, as also spiritual leader Bhaiyyuji Maharaj, had with Hazare. The meeting between Mukherjee and the ministers was held soon after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a detailed meeting with Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, looking into the Lokpal Bill earlier Tuesday. Singhvi had on Monday said that differences between the government and Hazare on Lokpal Bill were more to do with methodology rather than content and maintained that the Committee on Law and Justice and Personnel was open to all kinds of opinions and inputs to send a strong and acceptable to all Lokpal Bill back to Parliament. Congress member Praveen Singh Aron has already submitted a copy of Hazare’s Jan Lokpal Bill for consideration of the Committee. Civil society activist Arvind Kejriwal has stated that the government should mandate somebody officially for a political dialogue as this is not a technical issue.

Indian Army planning to set up mountain strike corps Army is planning to set up a mountain strike corps and is talking to various states including in the northeast against the backdrop of a Chinese build up of military infrastructure on its side of boundary. “We are in talks with the governments of states including Assam, West Bengal and Bihar for setting up the Mountain Corps headquarters, which would require at least 4,000 to 5,000 acres of land,” senior army sources said in New Delhi. Around 10-12 locations in these states have been identified by the army to set up the formation, they said. The Mountain Strike Corps is being planned by the army after it established two new Mountain Infantry Divisions for the northeastern region. The two new divisions, with 1,260 officers and 35,011 soldiers, have their headquarters in Zakama in Nagaland

and Missamari in Assam. The army is also looking to deploy ultra-light howitzers and light tanks along the Line of Actual Control in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. The IAF, on its part, has already based Sukhoi-30MKI fighters at airbases like Tezpur and Chabua. Eastern sector advanced landing grounds (ALGs) like Pasighat, Mechuka, Walong, Tuting, Ziro and Vijaynagar as well as several helipads in Arunachal Pradesh are also now being upgraded, much like western sector ALGs like Daulat Beg Oldi, Fukche and Nyama in eastern Ladakh. All these developments come against the backdrop of a major buildup of military infrastructure by China all along the border, which includes five fully-operational airbases, an extensive rail network and over 58,000-km of roads in Tibet Autonomous Region.

Save your money and consider a staycation instead By Asher Coe

(NC)—Vacations are something to be saved up for and taken a few times a year, to relax and ‘get away from it all’. It can be great to fly out to that tropical

destination, particularly for city dwellers, but how about considering a vacation at home? Instead of feeling the pressure to va-

cation in a distant and exotic place, consider a staycation. Staying at home is not only affordable but it’s a great alternative to a long, expensive and painst a k ing ly planned trip. S o what are s o m e of the things a staycation tourist does? First, make sure the week doesn’t become a ‘chore catch up’ time. Staycations need to be fun so

get the chores done beforehand. Play the ‘hometown tourist’ role and enjoy the great things the city or town has to offer. Visit the local tourist information centre for ideas. Go to parks and museums, try out new restaurants or take in a local festival or two. Don’t be afraid to splurge! Because of the money saved from a potentially pricey beach destination, eat out at the fancy restaurant downtown, get a massage, fire up your PlayStation 3 and game for the day, shop guiltlessly or even hire a cleaning service. All of this will contribute to a very carefree mindset one needs while on a staycation. Encourage that carefree mindset further by limiting your computer and cell phone usage. The point of any staycation is to get away from the demands of regular life. Let the calls go to voicemail, activate your “Out of Office” message on the computer and take a break. So the next time the glossy brochure doesn’t quite reflect the reality of the destination or a tourist trap becomes junky and expensive; consider a week spent relaxing at home. Biden reassures China over U.S. debt

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, continuing a visit to China, said the United States will not default on its debt. In a speech Sunday on the last day of his five-day visit, he reiterated that China’s large holdings of dollar assets were safe. “If the world thought, my God, they’ve been downgraded and they’re not going to make good on their debt, it would not have been viewed as the safest haven in all the world to invest. We are still 0the single-best bet in the world in terms of where to invest,” he said. Since Americans own 85 per cent of the national debt, any politician who defaults would have to disappoint them,

and “no politician wants to do that,” Biden said. The U.S. vice president was speaking about China’s $1.2 trillion in U.S. Treasury debt to an audience in the southwest city of Ghengdu. Chinese officials have criticized the political row in the U.S. over raising its borrowing ceiling and have expressed concern over the recent downgrade of the country’s credit rating.

China has the world’s second largest economy and is a key U.S. trading partner. Chinese and U.S. prosperity is key to reviving the global economy and no serious problems can be resolved without Beijing and Washington at the table, Biden said. “We’re the two biggest engines in the world to be able to do that,” he said. The U.S. relishes competition from

China and hopes for continued Chinese prosperity, with the $110 billion in U.S. exports to China last year generating hundreds of thousands of jobs, Biden said. Biden later accompanied Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping as they visited a school near Dujiangyan that was badly damaged in the devastating earthquake that struck the southwestern province of Sichuan in May 2008. The two men signed basketballs for the students and took questions from a class of students studying English. Reprinted with permission from CBC.ca

The UN Human Rights Council will pressure the Syrian regime to halt attacks and allow an independent probe into alleged violations during its brutal crackdown on anti-govt protests. The council, which meets in an emergency session, will consider a draft resolution that “deplores the continued indiscriminate attacks on its population” and seek an immediate stop to “all

acts of violence.” The resolution also highlights the need to “urgently dispatch an independent international commission of inquiry... to investigate violations of international human rights law in Syria since July 2011.” Investigators would be asked “to establish the facts and circumstances which may amount to such violations

and where possible, to identify those responsible, with a view of ensuring that perpetrators of violations are held accountable.” Twenty-four members of the council, including EU states, the United States and all four Arab countries -Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, had requested the special session on Syria.

It would be the second such meeting. A previous session in April had ordered a mission to investigate claims of violations but President Bashar alAssad’s regime has so far defied calls to allow investigators in. More than 2,000 civilians have been killed in Damascus’ crackdown since the popular uprising began in mid-March.

6.0-magnitude quake strikes Indonesia A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island early Tuesday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings issued. The off-shore quake hit at 3:12 am (20:12 GMT Monday) at a depth of 31 kilometres (19 miles) around 175 kilomtres southwest of Tanjungkarang-Telukbetung on Sumatra, the US Geologi-

cal Survey said. There was no tsunami warning or advisory in place on the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center website. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.

Iran on Tuesday unveiled a new cruise missile which it said has the capability to strike at warships at a range of 200 kms, including US bases in the Persian Gulf region. The missile designed for sea targets was put on display at a ‘defence marine show’ inaugurated by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian TV reported. The missile called “Qader” (Able) is built indigenously by Iranian scientists and has a high destructive ability against coastal targets and warships, the state run TV said. It said, that Ahmadinejad also made public a new torpedo system called “Valfair”, fired from submarine. Both the weapon systems were tested successfully. Iran now claims, it has an array of

short and medium range ballistic missile capable of reaching targets at almost every end of the strategic Persian Gulf, including US bases of the region. Cruising at a low height with high precision in acquiring its targets are among other features of the relatively lightweight Qader missile, it said. Iran’s Defence Ministry manufactured Bonyan 1 marine engine to provide the country’s naval forces with the strategic product. The torpedo is one of the most complicated marine weapons, which plays a key role in promoting Iran’s naval capabilities and the efficiency of vessels and submarines. In January, Iran’s Defence Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy, which are capable of spotting and destroying various targets at sea.

How to plan healthy lunches and snacks

By Stephanie Lawrence

(NC)—Back to school is an exciting time of year for the whole family. It is a fresh new start in so many ways. Along with new clothes and school supplies, and new friends comes a whole new routine. And this is the perfect opportunity to make some healthy changes that can last throughout the year. Heart and Stroke Foundation registered dietitian Carol Dombrow offers advice on how to get a healthy start that can continue throughout the year. “The first step is planning,” says Carol, “plan out all of your meals for the week, check your pantry to see what you have on hand for meals, school lunches and snacks, and make a grocery list.” Carol also suggests that one way to get kids to eat the lunches they bring to school is to get them involved. Kids can be asked what kinds of snacks, sandwiches and other options they would like in their lunch boxes and they can help pack them as well. She offers the following suggestions as healthy additions to a packed school

lunch: • Cut–up fresh vegetables with a low–fat dip. • Mix of dried fruit or unsweetened fruit sauce. • Mini pita or crackers with sliced cheese or hummus. • Refillable bottles of water. And don’t forget the non–food basics: • Stock up on reusable containers in a variety of sizes for items such as cut–up vegetables and fruit, salads, sandwiches and quiche, cubes of cheese, hummus etc. • Buy some smaller freezer packs to slip into lunch boxes to keep things cold. • Choose a lunch box that is well– made and includes enough room for lunch, snacks and re–usable drink bottle, and can be properly cleaned. • Invest in a thermos for hot lunches. • Remember to identify everything with your child’s name in permanent

marker. Other tips • Buy fruit of varying ripeness. This way you will have fruit throughout the week. • Bake batches of whole grain, low fat muffins, and breads and freeze them so you always have them on hand. • Wrap tomatoes and cucumbers separately and let your child add them to his sandwich when he is ready to eat it. This way the bread won’t get soggy. • Sign up your child for the school milk program so she can have cold milk for lunch. • Find out what your school’s policy is on nuts and other allergens. Make sure you read all labels carefully so you and your child know what is going into his lunchbox. • Encourage your kids to walk or ride their bikes to school. Sign them up for organized sports during the school year and also plan family activities such as hiking, swimming and outdoor games.

• In the grocery store look for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Health Check symbol to help you make healthy choices. More tips and healthy recipes can be found at healthcheck.org.

Ace shooter Gagan Narang will be conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by President Pratibha Patil on 29th August, as the govt officially announced the list of awardees last week. The names of the sportspersons to be conferred Arjuna, Dhyan Chand and Dronacharya Awards for the year 2011 were also announced though the list of the recipients was already out last month. President at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The 28-year-old rifle shooter, who was the first Indian marksman to qualify for next year’s London Olympics with a bronze in the World Championships last year. Nineteen sportspersons -- Zaheer Khan (Cricket), Rahul Banerjee (Archery), Preeja Sreedharan (Athletics), Vikas Gowda (Athletics), Jwala Gutta (Badminton), Suranjoy Singh (Boxing), Sunil Chhetri (Football), Rajpal Singh (Hockey), Virdhawal Khade (Swimming), Tejaswini Sawant (Shooting), Ashish Kumar (Gymnastics), Somdev Devvarman (Tennis), Ravinder Singh

Normally not more than 15 Arjuna awards are given in a calendar year. ENGLAND COMPLETE WHITEWASH

Beat India by innings & 8 runs, India lose series 0-4, Slip to 3rd in rankings Sachin Tendulkar came agonisingly close to a phenomenal 100th international century before a pathetic India slumped to an innings and eight runs defeat in the fourth and final cricket Test to give a ruthless England a resounding 4-0 series win at the Oval. Needing to bat out the entire fifth day to save the game, Tendulkar (91) led a spirited fightback alongwith Amit Mishra (84) but the complexion of the

game changed dramatically after their dismissals as the visitors lost as many as seven wickets for a mere 21 runs to

be all out for 283 in the second innings just at the stroke of tea.

With this emphatic victory, England officially crowned themselves the number one team in Test rankings with 125 points followed by South Africa with 118 points. The Indians, who started the series as the number one Test team, surrendered the number one tag after losing the third Test in Birmingham and have now slipped to the number three position following the 4-0 whitewash.

The Indian duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati has clinched the Cincinati Open Men’s doubles title by defeating the French - Serbian combine of Michel Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic on Sunday. Llodra and Zimonjic were looking to win their third consecutive title this week in Cincinnati. The duo won the titles in Washington defeating

Lindstedt/Tecau and in Montréal last week beating the Bryan Brothers. Sunday’s winners Paes and Bhupathi won their third title for the year. They won in Chennai in January and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Miami. They also reached the final of the first Grand Slam of the year the Australian Open. The Indian duo

got a walk over in the quarterfinal against Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek due to Berdych shoulder injury. In the semi-final they beat the World No. 1 team Bob and Mike Bryan in a tough match. The Champions will share $153 600 and receive 1000 ATP ranking points. Llodra and Zimonjic will receive $72 200

Having once been the major power in European and world club football, Italy is rapidly becoming the sick man of Europe in footballing terms. Only 10 years ago, Italy topped the UEFA country rankings but after Schalke 04 beat reigning champions Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, they dropped below Germany to fourth and lost a place in the Champions League. It has been a remarkably swift decline for the once all-conquering Italy which has seen it’s economic fortunes suffer as problems mount on the pitch. Gone are the days when Italian teams poached the best talent in the world, including from England and Spain, with megamoney transfers.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic did come back to Italy from a yearlong spell in Spain, but it was Barcelona who flexed their financial muscle to rip him from Inter Milan’s grasp in the first place, only to discard him in a cut-price deal to Milan a year later when they no longer wanted him. They have been linkChampions of Europe just over a year ago, they’ve been tempted into selling their stars this summer. Most alarmingly is the news that Samuel Eto’o is due to be snatched by the continent’s new financial power, Russia. Regardless of current wrangling, Anzhi Makhachkala essentially offered enough money to convince Inter to sell the man who was their best player

last season, while they also seemed prepared to let Wesley Sneijder -- probably their most instrumental figure in winning the Champions League -leave until they simply couldn’t find a buyer. Italy simply aren’t in the same league as their major European rivals and while Germany have overtaken them on the pitch, Russia have surpassed them in the banks, proven even by the innocuous transfer of left-back Domenico Criscito move from Genoa to Zenit St Petersburg. Italian football many not collapse and split up like the old Ottoman Empire did but given the country’s economic crisis, the sick man of Europe may not yet have reached the end of his illness.
