County Parks, Recreation and Tourism

Dear friends and neighbors,

Whenever I visit our facilities, I’m reminded of the important role recreation plays in providing healthy and fulfilling life for our citizens. Our parks and programs make a positive impact across every age and socioeconomic status. As we complete a master plan for Explore Park, I’m reminded of the groundbreaking ways Roanoke County has been on the forefront of recreation trends in the valley, with exciting new opportunities each decade. In the 1970’s we introduced Therapeutic Recreation Services for individuals with disabilities, now celebrating 40 years as the region’s sole provider of this remarkable service. In the 1980’s we developed innovative ways to partner with community athletics groups to develop quality leagues and facilities. The 1990’s saw the transformation of an abandoned property at Spring Hollow reservoir to the now thriving Camp Roanoke. The 2000’s yielded Green Ridge & Splash Valley, an innovative facility with a unique cost recovery model. Finally in the 2010’s we have embarked on a mission to revitalize Explore Park as an outdoor recreation destination. Everything we’ve accomplished over the years was made possible through the support and enthusiasm of a community that highly values recreation. Thank you for making our region such a great place to live. I can’t wait to see the heights Roanoke County will reach over the next 40 years. Sincerely,

Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism

World’s Largest Swim Lesson Day

The Green Ridge Aquatic Department has so much fun being part of this world record every year. We want you to join us again! Every year the record for the largest ever swim lesson grows larger. Last year 38,000 participants from 480+ locations helped to bring awareness to the fact that swimming lessons save lives. Green Ridge’s part in that was 67 people. We want to break our own record this year and teach at least 100 people how important swimming lessons are. Registration closes on June 21. Although registration is free, it is required to participate. AGES

EXPLORE PARK UPDATE on the master plan E

xplore Park is open for a third season under the operation of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. There’s a lot to be excited about as we work to bring the community’s vision to life through a new master plan. The maps and renderings shown here offer a sample of the long-term amenities we plan to offer at the facility. Additional materials are available online at www.ExplorePark.org/masterplan. As the Roanoke region continues to build on its positive reputation as an outdoor destination, Explore Park will fulfill a unique niche in our area’s recreation landscape: For Residents – We plan to be the starting place for individuals and families seeking adventure and enrichment outdoors. Our focus will be preserving and expanding recreation opportunities such as hiking/biking trails, boat access to the Roanoke River, overnight camping and educational programs based on the park’s environmental and cultural history – all while preserving the park’s natural beauty. For Visitors – The Blue Ridge Parkway is already a gateway for many visitors to our region. There are few places on the East Coast that offer such rich outdoor recreation amenities in such close proximity to a metropolitan core. We envision Explore Park as a must-see stop for our guests, inviting them to explore the rest of the valley while they’re here. For the Economy – Roanoke County will rely heavily on business and community partnerships to build out the park over the next 15-20 years. The master plan includes a business and phasing component to help guide this effort, and we have already begun reaching out to potential partners. What’s Next? – This summer we have continued to expand our program lineup, as you’ll see in this guide. We’ve transformed the gift shop at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center to feature a wide array of local crafts, which will be showcased at several special Artisan Saturday events throughout the season. Additionally, we are offering family crafts on select Saturdays this summer. Join us June 18, July 23 and August 20 in the Visitor Center for a free craft activity. Over the next year, we’re adding activities such as an interactive interpretive trail, a disc golf course, unique educational opportunities and special events. Behind the scenes you’ll see road and utility improvements, enabling us to bring in private sector partners to operate amenities such as a campground and ropes course within the next several years. With a master plan in place, continued community support, and new partnerships to facilitate its development, Explore Park is well positioned to thrive as a destination for exploration.

School Age Gymnastics

Each and every gymnast in our recreational program receives multitudes of one-on-one attention! This class boosts selfesteem and confidence as each gymnast will soon see their skills improving and bodies toning. We give our gymnasts big goals and encourage them to push themselves to succeed! Although this gymnastics class is not being held in an actual gymnastics facility, we will continue to be extremely goal oriented as we work balance, tumbling, coordination and more! Our classes are based off of USAG curriculum and mixed in with fun and effective drills. These classes will be training on a multitude of equipment. Our Beginner Program at Green Ridge is an entry level class that introduces the wonderful sport of gymnastics and builds up basic skills so one day we can move to a more advanced class! AGES

Prestige Gymnastics for Preschoolers

Preschool gymnastics classes at Green Ridge are filled with obstacle courses, tunnels, and exciting lesson plans, but your time spent with us is not all fun and games. Each preschool curriculum is carefully designed for what kiddos need most at these ages. Not only are they JAM-PACKED with fun, new activities in each class, they offer extensive physical work on balance, coordination, and motor skills. Sounds great, right? I’m not done yet! Our instructors are instilling intellectual learning into each class! Your little tots will be counting, using shapes, colors, sounds, music, and engaging all 5 senses! We haven’t forgotten about good listening skills! Our most asked question by parents is, ‘What can a 3 year old really do at gymnastics?’ The answer is, ‘LOTS’, let us show you! AGES

Making Art Your Own A

rtist Michael Farrar has long been told he has a unique artistic style. He says he gets satisfaction from taking a blank canvas and making something nobody has ever seen before. Michael is the kind of artist that other artists admire simply because of that unique style. He’s learned to make the art his own! As an art instructor, Michael excels at helping beginning students take ownership over what they create. “Most students start out wanting to replicate a photograph,” he says. “Once you can do that, you can start thinking how to make a more interesting one, or find a way to put yourself into the painting. Once you paddle up that creek of the river of creativity, you can start making your own personal art.” Michael approaches his instruction with a laid back attitude. His students say he’s encouraging, and works to build up their self-confidence and belief in their own abilities. He works hard to find a balance between providing tips on technique, and allowing for the experimentation new artists

24

1) Think Outside the Box – Realize you’re

making a work of art, not just duplicating a photo. Once you start doing that you see more possibilities with composition or color changes. After trying to copy a photo or still life, work your way up to a figure or town scene.

2)

Start with Landscapes –These are some of the easiest free form drawings to make. Why? If you get a tree or a bush in the wrong place nobody’s going to notice it. If you draw somebody’s head and it’s out of proportion, people will say “That’s a goofy looking head.”

3) Shapes First, Then Color – When

you start any drawing or painting, look for the shapes and sketch their outlines first. Then start with thin paint and get your composition where you want it. You can always add more paint and color to get the details right.

4)

Look for the Light – Without shadows everything looks flat. Working from photographs, the light doesn’t change. Painting outside harder because light is moving. While you paint, don’t forget you’re in a dynamic environment.

5)

Start Big, Go Small – Big brushes are hard to make details with. Small brushes are the decoration and icing on the cake. Save them for last.

RoanokeCountyParks.com • (540) 772-PLAY (7-5-2-9)

need to grow. When it comes to drawing and painting, Michael suggests these five simple tips for beginners. For aspiring artists who aren’t quite ready to pick up a paintbrush or pencil, Michael Farrar has created a new summer workshop series introducing students to several unique artistic mediums. These are shorter, four week courses designed to fit in around your summer vacation. Each of the techniques can help you develop as an artist by better recognizing aesthetically pleasing patterns, shapes and colors. (Class previews on next page) According to Michael, one of the hardest things he has to do as an instructor is get people to look at things in a different way. “I help them analyze the shapes involved, where the light and shadow is, if it’s a bright or dull color, if it’s grayed down. Once they start seeing things as more of an artistic view they can make it their own. They start seeing everything differently from architecture to vegetables to clouds. Then I know they’ve got the art bug. The doors are open!”

Linoleum Printmaking Have you ever wanted to try your hand at printmaking? If so, then this class is for you! Lino-cuts have been done for years, because the linoleum is easy to cut and creates simple designs. Learn how to use these designs to create beautiful pieces of artwork in this new class offering. There is a small materials fee. Four week program. Course will be held at the Brambleton Center from 1:00pm-3:00pm on Mondays, August 1-22. Course is for 18 years old and over. Baby Drops

No need to wait! Start the process of introducing your baby to the water sooner rather than later. This parent and child class will start building your baby’s confidence and swimming readiness. What a fun opportunity for you and your child to explore the water and become adjusted together. Parents will learn basic water skills to keep their children safe and help them to love the water. Safety information and teaching techniques will be provided to parents. Parental participation is required.

Celebrate your child’s independence in the water. This is the first class that children participate in the lesson without a caregiver. They must be comfortable separating from their parents and be able to follow safety rules. Children are encouraged to develop arm strokes, kicking, floating and submerging independently. Safety lessons will be more in depth. The class is geared towards beginner swimmers. AGES

Level III Lessons

Now you’re really a swimmer! Swimmers in this class are very confident and comfortable in the water. Dolphin kick and breast stroke are introduced but there is a lot of emphasis on rotary breathing and being able to swim the distance of our lap lane without stopping. By the time a participant passes this level they will have achieved basic water competency skills according to the new American Red Cross Standards. Safety lessons become more in depth and cover more topics. AGES

Let’s have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. They will gain basic aquatic skills including: beginning swimming strokes, breath control, floating and kicking, all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson each day that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments. The goal is a positive attitude towards swimming and water safety.

Level IV Lessons

Participants in this class will focus on developing all the strokes. Upon completion of this class participants will have been introduced to butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall. There will be a focus on swimming the length of the pool and improving rotary breathing skills in order for efficiency to be improved. This class is appropriate for the young or new swim team member that wants to continue to improve. AGES

Join us in our indoor, heated pool to experience a water-based exercise program specially designed to help participants improve joint flexibility, reduce pain, and stiffness while being supported by the water’s buoyancy and resistance.

Aqua Sculpt is a high energy, non-impact co-ed class. It is not a traditional bouncy aerobics class, instead the exercises used in this class focus on core strength using levels two and three (no bounce and suspension). The natural resistance of the water sculpts the inches away. This is an excellent class for the person who wants a non-impact class and wants to transition to our HydroPower class.

The National Park Service Celebrating 100 years with 100 Hikes

EXPLORE

T

42

his year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service. On August 26, 1916 the National Park Service was created through the Organic Act. Since its creation the Park Service has come to manage 410 units across all 50 states, and saw nearly 293 million visitors last year. These units include battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, memorials, monuments, parkways, preserves, reserves, recreation areas, rivers, trails, and seashores. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the 410 units of the National Park Service. The Parkway is an elongated national park in central and southern Appalachia, with great natural and cultural significance to the region and the nation. It protects mountain landscapes far beyond the shoulders of the

road itself. It is also a “museum of the managed American countryside,” preserving the log cabin of the mountain pioneer, the summer home of a textile magnate, and traces of early industries such as logging, railways, and an old canal. It is the product of a series of major public works projects which provided a boost to the travel and tourism industry and helped the Appalachian Region climb out of the depths of the Great Depression. The diversity of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s role in America’s natural and cultural heritage has led it to consistently be one of the most visited units of the National Park Service, with over 840 million visitors to date. In celebration of the centennial year, the National Park Service adopted a goal for the next century: “Connect with and create the next

RoanokeCountyParks.com • (540) 772-PLAY (7-5-2-9)

generation of park visitors, supporters, and advocates.” National Park Service units nationwide are realizing the centennial goal through both national and local campaigns and events. The Blue Ridge Parkway will celebrate the centennial year with parkwide initiatives and local events, including several in the Roanoke area. The Blue Ridge Parkway’s signature centennial initiative is called 100 Hikes. The goal of 100 Hikes is to organize 100 community-driven hikes composed of local leaders and youth. The Parkway hopes to connect mayors, county commissioners, town council members, city planners, and other community role models with young future leaders–by hiking together. It’s not the number of hikers that matters; it’s not the length of the hike that matters; it’s not the date of the hike that matters and

it’s really not the location of the hike that matters. What matters is that across the Blue Ridge Parkway, communities invest time and energy into commemorating the National Park Service Centennial by engaging in activity and dialogue that involves new audiences in new ways of thinking about the importance of national parks and all public lands in our communities. This initiative presents a powerful opportunity for parks and communities to engage with one another by fostering an intergenerational connection to natural public spaces and providing children with the opportunity to experience some of America’s most treasured places.

We have listed several programs to take part in this celebration. For more information visit us online at www.explorepark.org

his summer Roanoke County is offering a lineup of over 150 weeks of camps for youth ages 3 to 17. Our theme this year is #BuildYourSummer. You may notice that we’ve expanded our popular Lego programs to include new times and locations, STEM based learning opportunities and a Bricks 4 Kidz robotics program. That’s not the only area of programming to expand this year! We’ve partnered with Roanoke County Public Libraries to offer five new technology based camps for teens. Choose from courses such as Minecraft coding, website design, 3D printing and video editing. We’ve also expanded our outdoor adventure programs at Explore Park to include new full day experiences such as mountain biking, paddling and outdoor archery.

or inspire innovation, how will our kids be able to make a difference in the challenges now facing us?

The next part of our theme focuses on building your child’s summer schedule. We understand it can be hard for parents to map out their wide variety of options over nine weeks of summer vacation. New this year, our camp guide includes a schedule builder chart which lists camp options on a weekly basis for your planning convenience. Most importantly, we have designed a lineup of programs to build the foundation of lasting memories and important life skills. According to Peg Smith, the recently retired CEO of the American Camp Association, summer camp forms the six basic building blocks of a child’s future wellbeing.

Camp creates future leaders: The camp experience offers kids a close-up look at compassionate leadership through the camp director, counselors, resident nutritionist, and other camp personnel. And kids get loads of opportunities to practice being a leader themselves — song leader, lunch table leader, team captain, the list goes on and on.

Camp promotes community: It creates this great space that shows kids how to live together and care for one another. There are norms and negotiation of boundaries; there are rules. Camp is a place where kids can “practice” growing up stretching their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive muscles outside the context of their immediate family. This is what childhood is supposed to provide.

Camp has a lasting impact: One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a sense of success and achievement. Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help, and try new things. They leave understanding that it’s okay to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s generally what happens when you’re getting ready to learn something. The camp experience translates back in real-world experience — in an “I can” attitude.

Camp teaches critical thinking: We need to remember how important it is to be actively involved in the learning process, and camp affords that. We’re going to need really strong problem solvers in the next century. We need the science, math, and biology, but without the ability to relate, connect, empathize,

The camp experience embraces the natural environment: While children have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors, the camp experience advances the outdoor learning environment. As we become more concerned about saving the planet, we run out and make DVDs and videos about it. But the environment needs to be experienced to be appreciated. Kids need to catch tadpoles in the creek, wander among the trees, and feel the sun on their faces to understand the importance of those things. What happens to a generation that may grow up not seeing stars in the dark of the night?

Camp is an equal opportunity life changer: It addresses universal childhood needs not specific to a particular racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic group. Nobody is left out. It’s all about childhood development.

We hope you take some time to explore Roanoke County’s lineup of 2016 summer camps. Register Today at www.RoanokeCountyParks.com/camps
