Dear friends and neighbors, As fall approaches and your family settles into the back-to-school routine, don’t forget to make time in your schedule to get outside and enjoy a park. Whether you choose to sign up for a sports activity with your local rec club, volunteer for our Park Partners program, take a jog along a greenway, or go fishing on the Roanoke River, there’s a lot to do in Roanoke County! At Explore Park, we’re working hard behind the scenes to plan for several exciting new amenities over the next few years. We expect to be making announcements in the next few months about several new community partnerships and private businesses getting ready to invest in our area’s growing outdoor recreation economy. Some of these new recreation opportunities will be open to the public as early as next spring. Our department is focused on expanding and improving the recreation options important to our residents, but we can’t do it without your participation. Always wanted to take a yoga class? Don’t put it off any longer. Have the desire to pick up a musical instrument? We’ve got classes for that. Never been on an overnight canoe trip? This is your chance! Take a look at what Roanoke County has to offer, and set aside some valuable time for recreation. Sincerely,
In This Issue MOVE

We
Volunteers
“What is the essence of life? To serve others and to do good.” That quote from the Greek philosopher Aristotle over 2,300 years ago proves giving back to your community is hardly a new concept. In today’s world of hectic schedules and perpetual communication with the office, logic would argue that volunteer recruitment should be a difficult task. Not so! Here in Roanoke County, we’ve been blessed with a growing number of volunteers each year. Our volunteer program was established in 2008 with four partner organizations and just 20 volunteers. The program has grown tremendously in the past 10 years, with nearly 500 volunteers and 28 partner organizations on our roster. Demand was so high that a new position was created two years ago to help facilitate volunteer projects. When Volunteer Coordinator Brian Bartley stepped into the role, he was amazed by the community response. “Coming into it I didn’t realize how dedicated these people are. They’re doing it to serve the community, and not for any requirements or credit. Early on I acted like a sales person trying to pitch the program. Then I realized that’s not why people volunteer. You don’t need to sell them on what they get in return when they’re doing it for the right reasons.” Brian has developed our volunteer program into three core areas of participation:
Park Partners – These organizations pick a park or greenway to “adopt” over a period of two years and agree to complete a minimum of four flexible work days each year. Work days can be as short as 2-hours for simple projects, or as long as 8-hours for big jobs like painting a press box. Partners get to choose their project type and location. They also receive a sign in the park, a free shelter rental per year on their scheduled work day, t-shirts, free Splash Valley passes and shout-outs on social media. General Volunteer – Individuals or groups who don’t want to commit to regular service in our parks system may choose to donate time through a single event, or several smaller events. Often, general volunteers decide to increase their participation to the level of a Park Partner. Eagle Scouts – Over the past year, we have seen our largest ever group of Eagle Scouts complete projects in a Roanoke County park. Twelve scouts worked on projects such as building information kiosks, staining benches, and even installing of batting cages at Green Hill Park. Brian says the key to running a good volunteer program is a combination of organization and good customer service, “If it takes staff too long to get back, it
seems like they don’t care about you. You have to let them know you’re grateful and thankful that you’re going to help them out. That means creating a work plan, and making yourself available to meet them in the park at the start of each project.” How does the community benefit? Volunteers can help improve the efficiency of our parks maintenance program, by taking simple and time consuming tasks off the plate of our staff. That clears their agenda to tackle specialized projects that require specific skills and tools such as drainage, construction and other park improvement projects. Over the last year, our total volunteer hours were 3,737. That equates to $100,749 in public service dollars. What do the volunteers get out of it? Most of our volunteers get an immense amount of satisfaction from helping out the community in a visible way. We’ve had many folks tell us they gained a deeper appreciation for our parks by seeing them in a new light. Some discover new trails or park amenities during their service they never even knew existed. For parents looking to instill a sense of service in their children, volunteering at a park provide a life-shaping childhood memory. As a proud parent of a 2-year old, Brian Bartley says he’s changed the way he looks at volunteering. “You want to raise a kid that puts their community and others at a high priority, and there’s no better way to do that than through volunteering early or often. Whether it’s Boy Scouts or just calls out of the blue. I definitely think it’s something I’ll do with my son now. Whether that’s getting involved directly or placing him in an organization that will foster it. This position has changed the way I look at the activities I’ll get him involved in.” Whether it’s mulching a playground, staining a bench, building a batting cage, or picking up trash along the river, Roanoke County’s parks have much to owe to the efforts of volunteers. Even if you only have a couple of hours to contribute, every little bit makes a difference. Inquire about volunteer opportunities by email at VolunteerCoordinator@ roanokecountyva.gov or by calling (540)777-6340.

“...It’s healthy to invest time in yourself, and Roanoke County offers just the right lineup...”
Be Whole, Holistically! by Abby Reed
“Holistic wellness”. You’ve heard it, seen it advertised and have probably wondered to yourself, “What does it really mean?” Buzzword or not, the meaning of the word encompasses the wellbeing and healing of the whole person – mind, body, spirit, and emotions. It’s a personal journey for optimal health, a way to balance physical, emotional and mental health. This is why many people seek holistic wellness classes, seminars, videos and blogs. It’s an overall approach to help bring back awareness in a busy world. Commonly, yoga classes, mindfulness classes, nutrition classes and meditation classes aim to promote, encourage and teach holistic wellness. Interested in taking one of these classes? Here at Roanoke County Parks, Recreation & Tourism – we have you covered with a variety of offerings! Interested in trying out yoga? We offer a multitude of classes ranging from gentle, restorative yoga, aimed at quieting the mind and gently stretching the body, to power yoga, which is designed to steadily increase heart rate and strengthen muscles. Specialty yoga classes? We have those too! Previously, we have offered prenatal yoga, a highly sought-after option for moms-to-be. The class taught expectant mothers how to control breathing, how to safely get in and out of poses and about unique stretches that help to alleviate pregnancy pains. “It was great to learn how to adjust poses that are safe for baby and help my body feel better and more agile through the physical changes of pregnancy”, said one participant. This past summer, Flow in the Dark, provided the class the challenge to practice yoga and balance in a dimly lit classroom with glow sticks. We have even offered partner yoga, which was so successful, that we are offering it again this Fall! Additionally this Fall, a postnatal

yoga class will be offered, focusing on helping new mothers establish a regular fitness routine with gentle, safe stretches and strengthening after labor. Even yoga for the home/office, called Office Yoga Stress Busters 101, will be implemented this Fall, designed to teach techniques from a chair for those at home or at the office. So, maybe you are not interested in yoga. It’s just, “not for you”, but you’d like to achieve similar benefits like: reducing stress, improving concentration and focus and immune health. We offer classes for this too! This Fall, we will also be starting a new class that combines both gentle stretching and meditation – Mindful Movement, instructed by Dr. Mary Ann Koch. Designed to teach movements that can be performed standing or seated to help develop flexibility and balance and to teach special breathing techniques to combat stress, this new class embodies the definition of holistic wellness. Additionally, Dr. Koch is bringing back, Stress Reduction Through Mindfulness, a course designed to help people relax, meditate, focus and breathe more; students are sent home with homework to help realistically bring the practice into their real life. Beginner Meditation, a staple program of the Brambleton Center, will also be offered this Fall; a perfect class for those interested in meditation, its history and its benefits. Now is the time to try out a program geared towards holistic wellness! Fall is a perfect time to unwind, set new intentions and goals and to make the commitment to sign-up for a class just for YOU. As holistic classes teach, it’s healthy to invest time in yourself and Roanoke County Parks, Recreation & Tourism offers a lineup of classes just for this. For more information on all of our holistic wellness classes, see page 19 and pages 24-25.

KARATE PROFILE
Martial Arts
David Ginnings
“I’ve loved the martial arts since I was 12 years old and someone took me to a Bruce Lee movie. With Wado-Ki Karate, we want to give you options. What we teach is how to get comfortable, getting your hands up, taking a strong stance and saying ‘stop.’ We are a low-impact style of karate, meaning if you don’t want to spar, you don’t have to.“
NEW: Self Defense
Do you know how to defend yourself from an attacker? Learn how to recognize a potential threat. Learn how to avoid that threat. Learn how to deal with that threat. Learn how to use your body as a weapon, if needed. This is a four week program. Low impact. Simple body movements. Physical limitations are not a problem. Instructor David Ginnings. Four week class.

Do You Have the PASSION to Teach? Swimming lesson instruction is different at Green Ridge Recreation Center than anywhere else in the Valley, and for good reason! It all starts with the hiring process. Most new swim lesson instructors begin with a Water Safety Instructor course, a curriculum developed and approved by the American Red Cross. The program at Green Ridge is designed to include not only the normal water safety and swim instruction content, but also interactive teach-back sessions. Participants are critiqued and coached on their ability to interact with their peers in a staged lesson environment. “I think our classes are unique in that they emphasize a parent-teacher relationship like you might see in a school classroom,” says program coordinator Paige Hickey. “Our instructors are taught how to interact with parents and students to provide feedback in a way that can help them achieve their goals.” Paige’s unique approach extends beyond instructor training, which is usually the first step towards becoming hired to teach lessons at Green Ridge. She takes notes about each participant’s instruction style, including their enthusiasm, facial expressions and interaction with others.

“The class is part of the hiring process,” says Paige. “I’m looking to see that you’re taking it seriously and getting the work done in the best way for the student to achieve success. I want to find out what they intend to do with their certification. Are they simply looking to get a paycheck, or are they looking to change kids’ lives? It’s a big time investment, but a worthwhile investment for those that have the passion and want to make a difference.” Eight year old Parker Addison started taking lessons at Green Ridge at age 2. Now he’s a rising star on his Botetourt County swim team. His mother Tracy credits his swim instructors for the success. “We started for safety reasons, and wanted to make sure he had solid instruction. They were able to give him the individual attention that he needs, and tailor lessons for him to succeed. He loves the relationship he’s developed with his instructor. The lessons are so excellent, I’ve recommended them to millions of people.” Even as an accomplished young swimmer, Parker continues to take private lessons

from Paige’s team of water safety experts. Instructors who prove themselves in a group lesson environment are often recruited for private lessons. Since the certification carries with them, college age instructors often make extra money teaching lessons once they leave home. Coordinator Paige Hickey began her journey at Green Ridge as a member. She got hired on as an instructor shortly after we opened, and continued to build the program to what it is today. Despite continued success, her favorite part of the job is still teaching. “I love the look on a kid’s face when they overcome their fear and go underwater for the first time. I love it when they realize they can float or kick their feet and go forward. I love watching an adult get in a pool who was afraid, and can overcome that fear to swim a lap. I love that I have changed somebody’s life and made them feel safer as they develop a love of the water. It’s truly my happy place!” You can still find her at the occasional swim meet, cheering on young Parker Addison as he continues to develop his skill. There’s nothing more fulfilling for any teacher than watching your students succeed.
Swimming Lessons Green Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Preschool and Parent-Child swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or canceled due to lack of enrollment.

Brambleton Students Make Their
Musical Dreams
Come True by Randolph Walker
Have you ever watched a group of musicians playing and wished you could be part of it? Playing an instrument on your own is good therapy. But when you play with other musicians, it’s a completely different experience. It’s not guaranteed to happen every time you play, nor on every song, but when everything comes together--the sound, the song, the personalities, the energy, the room, the groove--then it’s pure magic. Musicians know this feeling well. It’s one of the best feelings in the world and many musicians get addicted to it. Having taught thousands of beginning music students, I know that many of them would like to have this experience, but doubt whether they’ll ever be good enough. The good news is that almost every music student can play in a band, if they stick with their instrument long enough. And it need not take years. My instructional bands at the Brambleton Center offer opportunities for students to play in real bands. The prerequisite is two months of lessons or classes. Students are qualified if they’ve taken one of my Absolute Beginners classes for guitar, harmonica, ukulele or keyboard at the Brambleton Center, or if they’ve had two months of private lessons. Bands are open to guitar, bass, harmonica, keyboard, ukulele and mandolin players, as well as singers. (Not everyone wants to sing, but those who can, are encouraged to. Many students have taken the first steps in learning how to sing harmony in one of my classes.) I tailor the assignments to fit the student’s ability level. Less-experienced students get practice playing chords. Moreexperienced students can perform solos,
34
if they want. Leading a group of students with varying skill levels, I tell them to “play as little or as much as you’re comfortable doing.” If a chord is new to them, I tell them to simply leave it out until they have learned it. No one is expected to be a professional. It’s a class, and mistakes are allowed! Songs are presented in the form of chords and lyrics, in easy keys for string players (D, A, or G). Songs have no more than three or four chords and usually have repetitive chord patterns which makes them perfect for students. Reading music is not required, although I am happy to write out solos in music notation for keyboard players if they so desire. If guitar players want to do solos, I write them in the form of guitar tab. Harmonica players get harmonica tab. What are the advantages of learning in a class format? Many students perceive the band classes as being less stressful than private lessons. Certainly they are less expensive. Regardless of the format, mastery of an instrument involves repetition. Building speed in switching from chord to chord typically involves many hundreds if not thousands of repetitions. For many students, chord practice as part of a band class, playing real songs, is more fun and more motivating than performing chord drills by themselves at home.
Explore Recreation Magazine • Fall 2017
Here’s another advantage: playing with other musicians helps students learn timing. If a student is practicing at home alone, no one will complain if he or she speeds up, slows down, leaves out beats, adds beats, etc. By contrast, playing with other students provides valuable feedback on whether your timing is correct. As I like to tell my students, you may be able to put your fingers on the right strings, but you’re not a complete musician until you can play with other musicians. Playing in an instructional band is the perfect first step. Along with practice on rhythm, chords, etc, band classes include background information on songs, bands, musicians, and music history. It’s a mix that’s fun and informative as well as instructional. The format of my band classes stays the same, but songs change in every class. The names of the classes I’ve taught--Country Band, Folk Band, Gospel Band, Harmony Band, Jug Band and Blues Band--will give you an idea of the different genres we’ve covered. Typically we have a mini-celebration at the last class with snacks and a band photo. Probably the most memorable photo was the Jug Band in overalls and straw hats, with a washtub bass!

the instruments mentioned above are all welcome. The repetitive chord patterns of doo-wop songs, with no more than four chords per song, make them great for students. I will also spend some time coaching students on doo-wop vocals. The relatively easy background parts make doo-wop a good starting point for aspiring harmony singers. I hope to see you soon at the Brambleton Center. Come with your instrument in hand--and ready for fun!

Quick and Easy Tips
for getting dinner on the table! by Maureen Wilson
Sometimes, even if you love to cook, getting dinner on the table on a hectic weeknight can be quite the chore. Running out of steam at the end of a long day doesn’t help matters either, when the kids (and spouse) are whining about what’s for dinner. As easy as those out of the cardboard box dinners can be we all know they can’t be compared to a “from scratch meal” put on the table. Time is a luxury most of us don’t have during the week.
Keep a stocked freezer and pantry - Nothing delays getting dinner on the table more than an “oopps I have to run to the store for ______ !” Keep your most commonly used meats and pantry items on hand for those last minute meal ingredients. This way if you forget something crucial for that new-just have to try it recipe you can always whip out a pantry/freezer staple recipe and still have dinner on the table at a reasonable time.
Unfortunately there’s no magic wand to fix this problem. But I have gathered a few simple tips and steps, from our friends on the internet that will dramatically shorten the amount of time it takes to make your weeknight dinner meals. I’m sure some of you have read, at one point or another, these ideas before, but it’s always nice to be reminded.
Let the kids lend a hand - Sure cooking dinner is a chore for you, but for a budding chef it’s a chance to learn a new skill set. Multi-task your evening by letting the kids help with cooking pasta or prep the veggies while you sear the chicken. Just be sure to match the age of your child with the cooking task at hand. Dinner will most assuredly be late if you have to run your 7yr old to the Urgent Care.
Simplify your ingredients - Yes we all love to try new things, but on a busy night sometimes less is more. Just be sure to start with good ingredients, since there are so few, each one counts even more. Embrace the slow cooker - A few mins in the morning spent on a dinner recipe for that evening makes all the difference. If you’ve been using the same slow cooker for fifteen years maybe its time to branch out to one of the new 7-in-1instant pots. They’ve come a long way in the past decade and are very user friendly. Double up your meal prep - Consider your plans for tomorrow’s dinner when preparing tonight’s feast. Stretch those ingredients you’re working with to help on the next night’s dinner recipe. Example: If you’re cooking ground beef for tonights tacos. Cook an extra pound and set it aside for tomorrow night’s Sloppy Joes. This kind of small but significant item doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re strapped for that extra fifteen mins it really comes in handy to have the protein for your meal already cooked and ready to add in.
Maybe you’re like me and you’ve got your tips and tricks down pat, but you’re just in a recipe rut. Your family will revolt against you if you serve one more Spaghetti Pie or Taco Casserole. Dinner riots are a thing and they can be a disaster mid-week when everyone is just ready for a refreshing home cooked meal after a week full of leftovers and “same old-same old”. You should give one of our cooking classes a whirl. These aren’t just for the aspiring chef, but for the week night chefs too! Learn to cook and season with new spices and ingredients. These courses offer not only a chance to experiment and learn, but to create new foundations for your base recipes. Build off your experiences in the kitchen and expand your quick recipe options all while having fun! Added bonus, no mid-week dinner riots for the foreseeable future. Good luck and God speed fellow dinner master.

Unicorn Glitter Slime Ingredients:
1/2 cup of hot water 1/2 tsp. of borax A bottle of glitter glue 1 cup of water Glitter A screw top container for storing your slime
Directions:
1. In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of hot water and the 1/2 tsp. of borax. Stir until borax is dissolved and then set aside for later. 2. In another bowl, pour out the bottle of glitter glue (approximately 1 cup) and add 1 cup of water to it. Stir until completely combined. At this point you could also add some of your favorite scent to the mixture. Vanilla or cotton candy is a personal favorite of mine. 3. Slowly add the borax solution to your glue mixture. You should do this a little bit at a time, stirring vigorously as you go. 4. Once the slime mixture starts to pull away from the bowl use your hands to mix it. Continue to work the borax solution through the slime. Be careful not to add too much or it will turn into Unicorn putty. 5. Once you’ve reached your perfect slime consistency you can add additional glitter to your slime mixture. Additionally, you can try combining different colors to achieve that Unicorn look everyone is after.

Canoe Crazy
See the world from the waterline! If you’ve been to a sporting goods store lately, you might have noticed the wall full of brightly colored kayaks of all shapes and sizes. Next to them you might be lucky enough to see one lonely, old-fashioned green canoe – the kind of water craft you might remember from scout camp as a kid. You can have your fancy “sit-ins or “sit-on-tops,” but for me, I’d rather have a plain old canoe any day. There’s truly something magical about being out on the river in a canoe that you can’t get from any other kind of boat. You’re close to the water, but not so close that you get soaked with every stroke. You can carry a friend, a child, a dog or all three at the same time! You can paddle on one side of the boat the whole trip if you learn a little bit of stroke technique, instead of contorting your shoulders in all kinds of directions. You can challenge yourself to a class 1, 2 or 3 rapid with the goal of keeping water outside of the boat instead of inside.
“...just looking at a canoe evokes memories of some of the best experiences of my life...” A few months ago I bought my first canoe, aiming to rekindle a childhood love for the outdoors. Since then I’ve had some time to reflect on what gets me out on the water to begin with. On the river you get a unique perspective that can’t be seen from the shore. Drifting quietly with the current you can sneak up on a Great Blue Heron on the Roanoke River near Explore Park, catching the breadth of its wingspan from right underneath. Paddling the mighty New River you can occasionally feel the rush of a roller coaster as you crash through a series of whitecapped waves, followed by the thrill of victory over the obstacle. Even the wet badge of defeat can be refreshing on a hot day. All that matters is that I’m out there in nature on a journey with a purpose. Flat water? I’d rather mow the lawn. Like me, Camp Roanoke staff member Susan Herndon-Powell first got a taste of paddling as a youth in a scouting program. When she became a camp counselor more than a decade ago,
49
by Scott Ramsburg
Susan was tasked with leading overnight river expeditions for youth throughout the Southeast United States. This effort combined her deep-seeded love for camping and backpacking with a rekindled interest in the river. This fall, Susan will be leading a beginner level overnight canoe trip on the James River for ages 12 through adult. “I enjoy leading canoe trips because of the beautiful sights and sounds of the river, and because I can bring along more food and comfort items than on my backpacking trips,” says Susan. An avid fan of outdoor cooking, Susan looks forward to overnight river trips because she can bring a cooler for refrigerated foods or beverages, and even a Dutch Oven for that special dessert treat. She also appreciates the added luxury of heavy tents and sleeping pads. On Roanoke County’s beginner trip September 23-24 Susan will serve as both expedition guide and head chef, although participants wishing to be involved in the cooking are invited to do so. A guided trip like this eliminates many of the planning burdens you would normally face before hitting the water. Things like river research, scouting campgrounds, verifying water levels, and transportation from put-in to take-out can become a logistical nightmare if you’re new to the pastime. You also get the added safety of a Wilderness First Responder trained instructor should anything unexpected happen. There’s also a unique social aspect to overnight camping on the river, especially with a group of new friends. Susan fondly recalls nights of telling stories around the campfire with program participants, watching the joy glowing in their faces by the orange light. According to Susan, she’s often just as inspired by the participants as they are from her instruction. Perhaps I’m a bit nostalgic because of my recent purchase, but just looking at a canoe evokes memories of some of the best experiences of my life. In a world where we fill our homes and lives with “too much stuff,” it’s the experiences we tend to remember most fondly. I’ll always cherish the times I’ve had in a good old-fashioned canoe.
