Dear friends and neighbors,

F

Doug Blount is director of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

all in Roanoke County provides us all with an opportunity to take advantage of many recreational options. As the season changes, some folks prefer to come indoors to one of our centers such as Green Ridge Recreation Center and participate in a class or use the indoor swimming pool. Many of our citizens prefer to take advantage of the breath-taking beauty that our area has to offer by walking on a greenway or using a park. Whatever you choose, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is here to help you with your recreation goals. We’re proud to offer a wide variety of indoor and outdoor options for your family. Physical activity is needed in all of our lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but we often forget the important role of social activity in our lives. Medieval Faire A Community Affair

By Scott Ramsburg

Y

es, Virginia. There IS a Medieval Faire and Highland Games in Roanoke, and it’s coming to Green Hill Park on Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th! Now entering its eleventh year, the Green Hill Medieval Faire and Highland Games has provided an escape for history buffs, entertainment seekers and creative anachronists alike. When I talk about the event with fellow Roanokers, I’m often surprised to hear they’ve never heard of it. Unlike many larger permanent fairs, this event takes place only once a year. (Always the last weekend in September.) Looking at my personal calendar at that time of year, I’m not surprised that word of this event has slipped through the cracks. For repeat visitors that come back to Green Hill Park every year, the Medieval Faire is somewhat of a tradition. “I’ve always been a fan of the Renaissance Fair style events, and it’s nice to have one so close to home.” says Michael Edwards. “Green Hill Park is such a great venue for this kind of event. It makes it easy for the kids to pretend they’ve gone back in time!” Don’t be surprised if you notice a few changes this year, according to event director Wendi Schultz. “Since we’re going into our second decade, we thought we needed to support the community that has supported us. We’ve invited several community partners to add a new twist to the event. Their presence will add some imagination and excitement as they present their skills with a new Medieval twist.”

New this year, the Medieval Faire will feature dozens of community performers.

In addition to broadening the event’s appeal by incorporating these new groups, the 2012 Green Hill Medieval Faire is shaping up to be the biggest event to date. New additions to the faire include: • Falconry demonstrations • Fencing demonstrations and instruction • Archery through the ages • Blacksmith crafting on-site • Belly dancing • More food vendors than ever (including the return of turkey legs) • A second masquerade ball and pub sing • Scottish dancing Event organizers say that it’s not too late to get your community group or club involved in the historical fun. “There are still a few weeks before the event,” says Schultz. “Getting your organization involved not only helps enhance the atmosphere for visitors, but also gives participants an exciting venue to showcase their skills. Just call our main office at (540) 777-6326 and let us know what you can provide.” New in 2012, visitors dressed in authentic medieval garb get into the event for free. This will enable the historical accuracy of the event to be brought to a new level. Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism staff also encourage college aged fairegoers to come as a clan dressed in garb reflecting their school colors.

Whether or not you’ve heard of the Green Hill Medieval Faire, This year Roanoke County’s event planners have made calls to this year’s event is one not to be missed! Says faire visitor Rob a variety of local community groups such as the YMCA, fencing Swiger from Galax, VA “I had a great time reliving the history of clubs, archery organizations, dancers, college clubs and musicians. the medieval age. The faire is a fun experience with adventures Each group was asked to modify their unique skills to fit into the like sword swallowing, archery, maypole dancing and humor, event’s historical theme. For example, local fencing and archery combined with some of the most unique entertainers I’ve ever groups have volunteered to give demonstrations about historical seen.” Come experience for yourself the atmosphere, the food, fencing techniques. Local musicians have reached into the depths the fun, the Highland Games Competition (Saturday only), and of their musical knowledge to provide historically accurate songs most of all the bonds of family camaraderie forged in this shared and instrumentation. So far, over half a dozen local groups have experience. 7 Register online www.RoanokeCountyParks.com • Register by phone 540.772.PLAY agreed to participate.

Building on Fun Magazine Celebrates 30 Years

By Scott Ramsburg

I

t’s gone through many changes over the years, but Roanoke County has been publishing a printed recreation program guide since 1982. In some ways, not much has changed! As I browse the 30-year-old browned newsprint guide I’m struck by the familiar program titles like pottery, watercolor, swimming, gymnastics, kayaking, tennis and aerobics. There are also similar Therapeutic Recreation classes for individuals with disabilities, and senior potluck luncheons. Today’s Recreation Magazine has changed in many ways. The most noticeable difference is the switch to full-color glossy magazine paper from black-and-white newsprint. Look further and you’ll see we’ve expanded our program options to include technology, travel opportunities, special events and the latest trends in group exercise. Our recreation facilities have expanded too! Most of our programs back then were held in elementary schools and fire houses because there was simply not enough room for them at the Craig Avenue Center and the now obsolete Ogden Center. Now you’ll find the majority of recreation programs occurring at Brambleton Center or Green Ridge Recreation Center. One thing that hasn’t changed is program quality. Staff member Myra Sellers started working here in 1979, and reflects, “Now we serve participants even better because we’re focused on a wider age range and larger numbers of people. Even though the volume has increased tremendously, our program quality has remained high. That’s because we listen to comments from our customers and respond to their needs.” We hope you’ll take some time to browse Roanoke County’s fall 2012 lineup of programs. If there’s a program you’re interested in that you don’t see here, please give us a call. Your feedback helps us determine our class lineup. Who knows what programs and services will be in our magazine in another 30 years?

High-Tech Research

Did you know that Roanoke County Public Library has a treasure trove of free online research databases? By Penny Lloyd , Roanoke County Library

At Your Public Library

P

ublic library reference departments, once home to thousands of hefty books chock full of information, have evolved in recent years. With the affordability of personal computers and the growing popularity of tablet computers, such as iPads, eReaders (i.e., Kindle, Nook), and other digital devices, what used to be buried in a hundred different places may now be just a few clicks away on a computer keyboard. Most information previously found only in encyclopedias, almanacs, or directories is now readily available on the Internet and searchable from the comfort of your home. Unfortunately, it may be interspersed with a lot of data that is inaccurate or irrelevant. The trick is for you to find reliable, well organized, and easy to understand research tools. That’s where the Roanoke County Public Library’s collection of online databases comes in. For most, all you need is a computer and your library card, and every database is free! Learning Express Library Whether you’re still in school, studying for your U.S. Citizenship, or want to improve your job skills, LearningExpressLibrary provides access to a variety of online practice exams based on official standardized tests. Consumer Reports Looking for a new refrigerator or a better lawn mower? If you want unbiased information from a reliable source, check Consumer Reports online before you invest. This searchable database is available for in-library use. Genealogical Research There are plenty of fine genealogical research tools out there, and Roanoke County Public Library has two of the best. The popular Ancestry Library Edition is available for use in the library. HeritageQuest Online, another essential resource that includes

18

searchable images of U.S. federal census records, family records, and local histories, is available from home. Mitchell’s Automotive Repair Manuals For the do-it-yourselfer in the garage, Mitchell’s remains the premier provider of automotive repair information, vehicle maintenance, diagnostic data, and service manuals. Mitchell’s is available for in-library use only. If you prefer the print version, a selected collection of Mitchell’s manuals can also be found in South County’s Reference Department. Mango Languages Whether you’re planning on a trip abroad or having an overseas visitor, you might want to brush up on your language skills. Mango Languages is an online language-learning system that can help you master Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian, and more! Reference USA For detailed information on more than 12 million U.S. businesses and 102 million U.S. residents, head to ReferenceUSA. Here you’ll find listings that include telephone numbers, street addresses, zip codes, demographic and financial data for businesses, local competitors, and even mapping functionality. Opposing Viewpoints Trying to figure out how the other side thinks? Opposing Viewpoints can help. This database is the digital equivalent of the book series of the same name, featuring a wealth of up-to-date essays on relevant and controversial topics to encourage critical thinking and issue awareness. Biography in Context Whether you’re researching someone famous or are just naturally curious, Biography in Context delivers in-depth information with over 600,000 biographies spanning history and geography.

Literature Research Center The Literature Research Center is just what it sounds like – a current, comprehensive, and reliable online resource of literary topics, authors, and their works. Coverage includes all genres, disciplines, time periods, and regions of the world. Research Magazines, Periodicals, and Newspapers There are a number of databases available for local, regional, state, and national publications, including magazines, newspapers, books, pictures, maps, and television and radio transcripts. These include, among others, eLibrary, InfoTrac, and Newsbank.

T

Has the old way of doing things gone the way of the buggy whip? Well, not yet, but databases and other digitized resources have opened up a whole new world for everyone. There’s hardly a reference librarian whose adrenalin doesn’t jump when asked a question that requires a trip to the shelves – most librarians will admit that printed books are where their heart is – but you can count on the reference staff at the Roanoke County Public Library to help you identify the best tool for your research. Many times that tool just may be one of the these online resources.

Aquatics

Preschool Swimming Getting Started Early Green Ridge offers lessons starting at age 6-months, but parents should participate with them at this early age. By Jim Moshier, Aquatics Director at Green Ridge

I

t’s that time of year again when school starts and parents rejoice! Older students pack their laptops, begin writing research papers and graphing mathematical equations. Elementary students prepare their notebooks, pencils, and crayons in backpacks. The preschooler sings letters and numbers, learning to count. For the preschooler, it’s an exciting age. Everything is new. Discoveries are a daily occurrence. Parents find the joy of seeing their little one taking baby steps with giggles and laughter. Toddlers seem to absorb everything, taking each day in with fun and the thrill of learning. It is a great time to learn and the very best time to begin swim instruction. There are several things parents can do with their preschooler even before they enter the pool. Getting used to the “feel” of the water over their body is important because it calms the fears of the child. “Feeling” the water and how it moves is something that preschoolers can learn to become comfortable with. Breath control is also an essential part of swimming. When your face or head is underwater, it is critical NOT to take water into the lungs. The best way to prevent water from coming in is to learn to blow air out of the nose and mouth. Preschoolers can “blow bubbles” in the bath tub or in a large bowl and get used to the idea of expelling air so that water doesn’t come in. My best advice for teaching this skill is to make it a game. Parents can demonstrate by placing their face into a large mixing bowl with water and blowing bubbles into the water. Kids generally think this is really silly looking and sounding. Taking a bath or playing outside on a hot day is a great time to learn the “watering can game.” Taking a watering can (or gentle shower head) and lightly sprinkling water

26

on your child’s head for five seconds at a time. This will give them the sensation of learning to control their breath while being partially under water. The more fun you make it for your child, the more they will be willing to play along and progress with water acclimation. As a parent, have you ever considered the importance of learning to swim? Swimming is a life saving skill and should be taught at a young age so that children can learn to survive a drowning situation. Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for kids ages 1-14? (per CDC 2005) Every good parent would like their child to know how to swim, but many do not know how to teach them. That’s where the Green Ridge Recreation Center aquatics professionals can help you! We have an experienced, knowledgeable staff that possesses both the skills and caring passion for teaching swimming. Our certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors can teach your child to swim at your convenience and on your schedule. Classes are offered for age six months through adult. All classes include safety lessons for students and parents that can save a life in a potential drowning situation. We make every attempt to “play” while teaching swimming. This enhances the learning experience for your preschooler. Together, between your efforts at home and the swim instruction at Green Ridge Recreation Center, they will soon look forward to swimming due to the enjoyable experience. The swimming philosophy at Green Ridge is that we believe everyone should know how to swim and be able to enjoy it. It is a lifetime recreational opportunity that can begin for your child today.

Keep Kids Active By Julie Morris D.H.Ed., M.S., ACSM

Wellness

C

& Avoid the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

hildhood obesity is quickly becoming an epidemic. Obesity in children has more than doubled in the past 20 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 1980, 6.5 percent of children ages 6 to 11 years were obese; in 2006, 17 percent of children were obese. Eighty percent of children who are overweight at ages 10-15 years are obese by the age of 25 years. If a child is overweight before the age of eight years, obesity is likely to be more severe in adulthood. There is also an increase in the number of youth with Type 2 diabetes; 30% of all new cases are youth. The risk of disease is very high for those children who are overweight and obese; 60 percent have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar and 20 percent have two or more risk factors. Parents have great influence on the health of children. Children mimic the behaviors of their parents. If parents are sedentary, then children are likely to be sedentary. If there is at least one parent who is overweight or obese, their child has an 80 percent chance of being overweight or obese Research shows the parent’s attitude towards physical activity affects the child’s attitude towards physical activity. Children who have parents who are physically active are six times more likely to be physically active than children who have parents who are inactive. When parents lead by example the children are more likely to lead a healthy lifestyle. When a child is overweight or obese, family support is essential. Parents must plan physical activities that involve the entire family. Parents need to lead by example and participate in physical activity and play active games with their kids. Parents should be creative and remind children physical activity can be obtained by parking farther away and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Playing outdoors games the entire family enjoys is a great way to get children moving. Parents should help their children set realistic, short-term goals. It is a lot easier for a child to adhere to realistic goals and goals that are short-term. arents are busier now than ever before and family responsibilities take priority P over physical activity. Being too busy is often cited as reason for not participating in physical activity and exercise. Research shows that the average household watch-

30

Register online www.RoanokeCountyParks.com • Register by phone 540.772.PLAY

es eight hours and 15 minutes of television in a 24 hour period and people, over the age of two years, watch about 4.5 hours of television per day. If families can spend a large amount of time watching television they have time to participate in physical activity. Parents should limit family’s television viewing time and commit to performing more physical activity as a family. Recess is a great way for children to obtain much needed physical activity. Recess time in the schools has been lowered significantly or dropped. Only 35 percent of recess time is spent being active. The little recess time children do receive does not meet the 30 minutes of daily recommended amount of physical activity. There are a vast array of programs now being offered to keep youth active. Roanoke County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism offers youth sports, fitness classes, dance, and more to keep youth active. Green Ridge Recreation Center also gives youth a fun and safe environment to get our youth moving. With two full basketball courts, an indoor aquatic center, an activity room, and a wellness center, youth are sure to get all the activity they need. The wellness center offers family track times for ages six and up. Youth ages 10 and up can also use some of the fitness equipment with their parents. Take a look and let us show you how to keep your youth fit and healthy! Julie Morris is the Wellness Manager at Green Ridge Recreation Center.

Get rid of stress through meditation and self-centering techniques found in the movements of T-ai Chi.

T’ai Chi

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Another important aspect is the positive effect it has on circulation and stimulating blood flow to the organs. Six week program. Instructor: Denis Spencer Ages

Marine Mud Run

By Scott Ramsburg

Athletics

R

17 Years Helping Area Youth

oanoke County’s department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has been proud to host the Marine Corps Mud Run since 1996. The event was the brain child of Marine Corps Lt.Col. (Ret) Ted Adams, who reflects, “I felt there was always a lack of interaction between local reserve units and the community and so I set out to invent something that might change that. I wanted to do something other than a typical Toys For Tots event where people are expected to donate toys. I wanted more than a monetary donation, I wanted people to get a small taste of what it means to be a Marine. A benefit fun run through mud seemed to be the perfect fit..”

Around the time the first event was being planned, Roanoke County was in the early stages of revitalizing Camp Roanoke, a youth summer camp founded in 1925 that had fallen into disrepair. The County took over the camp as part of the effort to construct Spring Hollow Reservoir. It was decided that in exchange for allowing the use of Green Hill Park for the annual event, some of the proceeds from the Mud Run would go towards Camp Roanoke. Seventeen years later that arrangement still stands, having raised nearly $100,000 for facility improvements and repairs that have been an essential part of the growth the camp has experienced. Thanks to the partnership with the Marine Corps League, Camp Roanoke has been able to serve more participants in a safer and more comfortable environment. These are just a few of the improvements that have been made as a direct result of Mud Run funds: • New pavilion metal roof (replaced due to damage). • New upper bathhouse metal roof (replaced due to storm damage). • Gutters on all residential cabins and the nature cabin. • Air-conditioning/de-humidifier units for all residential cabins. • Freezer and stove replacement in the kitchen. • Utility pole relocation from the main field to the upper parking lot, allowing for uninterrupted play in the fields. • Numerous road repairs after storm damage and flooding. • Heater installation in the kitchen for year-round catering use.

Proceeds from the run benefit Camp Roanoke & Toys for Tots

• Heater installation for residential cabin year-round use. • Fireplace repair for the Kiwanis Lodge, allowing yearround use for campers on rainy days and user groups during the off season. Camp Roanoke director Greg Martin is honored to participate in the Mud Run, saying that these improvements would not have been possible without our Marine Corps League partners. “Through their service to the community, we are able to accommodate more campers, community program participants and citizens in a year-round capacity. Donations received assist camp with facility needs and repairs and are an essential component to our success.” In the end, it’s local youth that benefit from the most from the Mud Run, whether through Toys for Tots or the Camp Roanoke donation. With the help of the Marine Corps League, Roanoke County is able to serve over 2,000 youth each year, enriching their lives through outdoor programs, summer camps and environmental education experiences. Event founder Ted Adams agrees that the annual event is a win-win for both organizations, saying the Mud Run “brings together thousands of people for ‘good clean fun’ while also raising thousands of dollars for Toys For Tots and Camp Roanoke. These two very worthy causes help bring a smile to the faces of many children.” This year’s Mud Run will be held Saturday, September 15th. Ready to take the challenge? Visit MudRun.com to sign up.

Preschool Athletics Great Beginnings Youth Clinics

Did you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they needed to compete in organized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional program targeted to preschool and Kindergarten aged boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervision of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work together with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.

Natural Connection

Environmental Stewardship at Home By Erin O’Donnell

Outdoors

A Camp Roanoke camper examines a small piece of the natural world. She knows that environmental stewardship starts at home!

ithin the human spirit there is an innate desire to connect with the surrounding natural world. However, fewer and fewer people are able to delve into this world as work, family obligations, and other daily tasks become increasingly important parts of life. We often experience nature only in passing, while driving on a highway or walking to our mailboxes. It is part of the background to many of us, a part of the world that can be easily overlooked. In viewing the world as this, it is left more vulnerable to environmental degradation from human interaction. Over time, our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains become littered with soda cans and our rivers become inhabited by more plastic bags than fish.

which is a 700+ acre facility situated at the base of Poor Mountain near Dixie Caverns. Other programs will be held at the Brambleton Recreation Center & local county parks. In addition, here are a few quick tips to reduce your impact on our environment:

The good news is that is this does not have to be the case. Everyone can become stewards of our environment by making simple changes in daily life. First, get to know the plants and animals that share your neighborhood. Where do the prettiest wildflowers reside? What songbirds sing near you? What draws them to these areas? Once you have become aware of the natural world in your own backyard, you will be better suited to preserve it. Starting this fall, Roanoke County’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism will be offering a wide range of environmental awareness programs to provide residents of all ages the opportunity to learn techniques to reduce their ecological footprints. Some highlights of the autumn lineup include home “greening” and composting workshops, as well as outdoor oriented programs such as a guided nature hike and a wilderness etiquette course. A few of these options will take place at Camp Roanoke,

• Try to recycle as much as possible. Roanoke County collects mixed paper, plastics #1-7, and aluminum. For a list of collection centers, check out www.RoanokeCountyVA.gov.

• Strive to use less toxic products. These often end up in our waterways making the water unhealthy for other living creatures • Minimize the amount of waste you produce by buying products with less packaging and buying only what you need. Start traveling with your own coffee mug rather than relying on disposables. Bring a tupperware to restaurants and forgo the to-go box.

• Unplug items when not in use. Many common household items, such as stereos and microwaves, drain electricity 24 hours a day while plugged in. By engaging in such actions, you can take pride knowing that you are working to keep our valley, our home, pristine for generations to come. If you would like more information on environmental program offerings or would like to schedule a group program, please contact Camp Roanoke at 540-387-6114 or eodonnell@roanokecountyva.gov.

Flying Into Roanoke!

This fall, Green Hill Park hosts the IQA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship! Spectators are welcome and encouraged. See page 25 for more info about events surrounding the tournament.

Quidditch Vacation My Unusual Sporting Road Trip

By Leslie Ann Johnson

A

year ago, when I first heard that Quidditch had flown out of the pages of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and into the hands of non-magical folk, (or “Muggles “as they’re known in the series) I thought it was a cute idea. How neat was it that some college students had adapted the rules of Quidditch to be Mugglefriendly? I envisioned a group of Harry Potter fans running around with brooms and capes and drawn-on scars, pretending to be whacked by a “Bludger” or pretending that they had caught the “Golden Snitch.” Although an avid Potter fan, I figured the game would probably be a little childish or just plain geeky. After a little online research, I quickly discovered that my initial impression was wrong. This is a real league sport, and the players take it seriously; or at least as seriously as possible while running around with a broom between their legs.

Travel

The rules are organized and creatively adapted to suit non-magical players. Even the Golden Snitch (a tiny little Quidditch ball with wings) is adapted by using a person dressed in yellow with a tennis ball in a sock tucked into their waistband. Grab the tennis ball, snatch the snitch!

46

Itching to see a live match, I went to www.internationalquidditch. org, home of the International Quidditch Association (IQA), where I saw that the Quidditch World Cup was coming up and—wait, what? There was actually enough interest in Muggle Quidditch to make an international tournament? Clear my calendar! Quidditch World Cup, here I come! We packed up the car on a cold November morning, ready to drive 10 hours to New York City. Hitting the road, we had visions of sailing down the highway and arriving just in time for the opening ceremonies. Alas, it was not to be. We had forgotten about toll booths.... And construction… And the driving time added by trying to navigate the urban jungle. Voices were raised, hair was pulled out. Maps were consulted and cast aside, condemned as useless. Despair followed us like “Dementors” as we drove in circles, watching the time for the opening ceremonies come and go.

You don’t have to drive to see live Quidditch! Check out the tournament at Green Hill Park in November.

After FINALLY remembering that my phone had a built-in navigation feature, we arrived safely at the venue. We spent a few extra minutes in the car, lowering our blood pressures, and as we waited, we watched spectators pass. Having never been to a single Quidditch match, much less a tournament, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Some spectators were young while others were “young-at-heart”. Some wore wizarding garb, while others donned sweatshirts. Expectation and delight could be seen on everyone’s face as they walked toward the gate; all these people from all different walks of life, and Harry Potter had brought them together. Throughout the tournament, the mostly college-aged athletes encouraged people to engage with them in the spirit of community. These players were on the Quidditch pitch bringing to life a part of a beloved book series that had changed their world, and while they wanted to treat it respectfully, they also wanted to have fun and make it easily accessible. It was wonderful to realize that the fanbase for Harry Potter included people with many different interests and from many different backgrounds. The matches were fast-paced and played with heart. Just the memories of the frenzied action on the field get my blood pumping! Once off the pitch, teams that had moments before been awing the spectators with their intensity and skill happily paused for pictures and made pleasant conversation. Between matches, little (and notso-little) kids were welcome on the field to try their hand at Quidditch with the help of a few players. The people sporting capes and house scarves walked shoulder-to-shoulder with athletes without ridicule. Everyone, whether player or spectator, was there to have a great time and positive attitudes showed on every face. This year, the IQA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship are coming to our very own Green Hill Park in early November. I can’t wait to rekindle that spirt of camaraderie with other Harry Potter fans, without having to put up with the toll booths and big-city driving. The winners of this tournament will go on to Kissimmee, Florida to compete against the nation’s best Quidditch players in April. Hang on to your wizard hats, this event will knock you off your broom!

Old Salem and Tannenberg Organ

The Bounty of the Valley - Dayton, VA

The Dayton area was first settled in the mid 1740s because of its fertile land and abundance of fresh spring water. By the 1780s, Mennonite families began settling in this lush, fertile valley and added much to the cultural make-up of Dayton. Your day begins at the Shenandoah Valley Produce Auction, a must see operation that is the largest wholesale auction of its type in Virginia. The auction provides a central location for area growers to sell their harvest in bulk from early spring to late autumn. Your next stop is the Heritage Museum and Cromer -Trumbo House in Dayton. The museum owned by the historical society includes folk art and Civil War exhibits including the ‘Invincible Spirit,’ a compelling exhibit spanning the history of the Shenandoah Valley. The Cromer-Trumbo house, built in the early 1800’s houses a unique collection of Victorian and early twentieth century household items and decorative arts. Dayton is home to several historical structures which will be narrated from the bus by a step on guide with a stop at the Daniel Harrison house. Built in 1749, this stone structure, also known as Fort Harrison served as a place of refuge for residents of the area fleeing from the marauding Indians during the 1750’s. The day concludes at the Dayton Farmers Market with its wide array of shops. Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Old Salem is one of the most authentic living history attractions in the United States. Founded in 1766 by a group of Moravian missionaries the town’s restored and reconstructed buildings present visitors with a view of Moravian life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Your self guided walking tour includes several historic structures staffed by costumed interpreters which include skilled blacksmiths, cobblers, gunsmiths, bakers and carpenters, actually practicing their trades while interacting with visitors. Approximately 70% of the buildings in the historic district are original, making this a truly unique living history museum. Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to the 1800’s Tannenberg Organ. This is the largest organ in existence built by Moravian builder David Tannenberg and your experience includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the hand pumped bellows, and a performance by a professional organist. The historic district covers approximately seven blocks and the sidewalks in some areas are uneven. Please wear comfortable shoes. Lunch is at the Old Salem Tavern.
