County Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Dear friends and neighbors,
A few weeks ago Roanoke County unveiled a new adventure plan for Explore Park. It’s been the culmination of over a year of public feedback and design work, with the goal of shaping the future of our newest facility. The article on page 7 will give you a brief overview of the plan, but I encourage you to visit www.ExplorePark.org/AdventurePlan for additional information. We envision Explore Park as the starting place for individuals and families seeking adventure and enrichment in the outdoors. Our focus will be expanding recreation opportunities such as hiking/biking trails, river access, overnight camping and educational programs based on the park’s unique environmental and cultural history - all while preserving the park’s natural beauty. Roanoke County will rely heavily on business and community partnerships to build out the park over the next 20 years. The adventure plan includes a business and phasing plan to guide this effort. The Blue Ridge Parkway is already a gateway for many visitors to our region. Few places on the East Coast offer such rich outdoor recreation amenities in such close proximity to a metropolitan core. We envision Explore Park as a must-see stop for our guests, inviting them to explore the rest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge while they’re here. Sincerely,
Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism

EXPLORE PARK’S Adventure Plan R
oanoke County has completed a twelve month master plan process for the Explore Park Adventure Plan. We’re thankful for the residents and stakeholders who contributed to the Adventure Plan and shared their ideas through community meetings, focus groups, interviews, and surveys. Implementation of the Explore Park Adventure Plan will depend on public and private partnerships to help Roanoke County develop the park in multiple phases over the next 20 years. The Adventure Plan includes a business and phasing plan to guide this effort. The Adventure Plan encompasses many diverse active and passive recreational opportunities for residents and tourists that will be new to Explore Park and Southwest Virginia. Some of the opportunities listed below would be the first of their kind in the state of Virginia: • In-River Kayak Park - Go tubing, kayaking or canoeing through a series of natural rapids, enhanced by in-river features that can be modified depending on water levels! This amenity would be the first of its kind in Virginia. • Roanoke River Greenway - Imagine being able to walk or bike from downtown Roanoke all the way to Explore Park in an afternoon. When complete over the next few years, the Roanoke River Greenway will stretch 26 miles from Roanoke County’s Green Hill Park to Explore Park. • Overnight Accommodations - The master plan calls for a variety of accommodations, built and managed by an outside vendor. Space has been designated for hike-in tent camping, car camping, cabins or yurts, RV camping, and a lodge. These are all much needed amenities that fit well into the region’s tourism plan. • Food/Retail Operations - The Brugh Tavern is available for a distillery, brewery or restaurant operation. Space has also been designated nearby for a gas station and country store that will service the park’s new visitors and overnight campers.
• Zip-line / Aerial Park - Ranking as one of the top attraction requests on our public survey, Explore Park is well positioned for an outside vendor to build a course. The park features diverse terrain, a river crossing opportunity, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. • Bike Skills Park - The Roanoke Region is on its way to becoming nationally recognized for bike amenities. Working closely with biking advocates and the Roanoke Chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association, we’ll be seeking grant and fundraising opportunities to develop a world-class skills park. • Event Venues - Enhancement of the road system will enable the Riverside Village Area (formerly historic area) to host special events. We envision the transformation of Houtz Barn into an event stage. In later years of development, the Adventure Plan calls for a concert stage in a picturesque field located on the Bedford County side of the park. • River Access - The master plan calls for preservation of the Roanoke River frontage, as well as increased public access for recreation such as boating and fishing. These efforts go hand-inhand with the regional development of a blueway and greenway system throughout the Roanoke Valley. • Equipment Rental - With improved river access, there will be a need for rental equipment such as kayaks, canoes, tubes, and fishing gear. An outside vendor will build and operate this amenity. For more information or to view the full adventure plan please visit www.ExplorePark.org/adventureplan

Take a Bite Out of the Nite - 5k Zombie Run
Zombie Run is an obstacle fun run for the end of times. This year the event will be a night run to add to the excitement. But you’re not just running against the clock you are running from flesh-eating, virus-spreading, bloody zombies. Participants will use speed, agility, and their intact brains to overcome obstacles and avoid flesh-eating Zombies. Before the race, you will be given a flag belt. These flags represent your health. The zombies want to take your flags and maybe eat your brains. If you lose all your health flags, you die. And the zombies win. Throughout the race, there will be a series of man-made and natural obstacles for you to complete. There will be zombies. Their job is to mainly go after your health, in the form of your flag belt. Avoid the zombies to keep your health flags. Use everything you have in you to make it to the FINISH LINE “alive” with at least ONE FLAG INTACT. If you finish with zero health flags, this means the zombies have successfully transformed you into the “undead”. There will be a start line, and a finish line, but what happens in between is up to you. If you “survive” you will be entered into a drawing for some great prizes. Kids race too! Please bring your own flashlight or headlamp! Event benefits Special Olympics. Register at Active.net AGES

GEARING UP FOR NEW CYCLES T
here’s growing excitement throughout Virginia’s Blue Ridge for the sport of cycling! Roanoke County’s master plan for Explore Park calls for a mountain bike skills park to add to the growing list of cycling amenities in our area. Why is it so popular? Cycling provides a healthy aerobic workout, scales to various ability levels, and creates both an individual and group challenge for participants. At Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism we know that not everyone wants to invest in the equipment and time it takes to hit the road or trail. That’s why we’re expanding indoor cycling options at both Brambleton Center and Green Ridge Recreation Center this fall! One of our fitness instructors Lori Fadorick says cycling ranks among her favorite programs to teach. “It’s all about the FUN factor. I create a playlist with energizing, upbeat music and encourage people to sing along, which also helps you control your breathing. You can see the look of determination on people’s faces and know they’re burning calories. That makes it all worthwhile. Now with the new equipment, participants will be able to race against each other to increase the fun factor. It can be competitive, it can be a group sport and it can be individual…. Whatever you want it to be!”

In addition to their cycling classes at Green Ridge, instructors Lori Fadorick, Nita Chocklett, and Tara Ivins will be energizing a new set of participants at the Brambleton Center in a brand new studio. We’re equipping a room with 11 brand new Keiser M3i cycles, guaranteed for the entire class, allowing participants to use the same bike every class. The cycle studio will display a fun, multi-colored lighting system and a large screen TV to display cycle statistics from each bike. The class will use an Intelligence Projection System that uses Bluetooth Smart technology to transmit rider data to multiple devices at once, allowing riders to use their own apps to collect data, while still participating in the class. The IPS Graphics Generator Unit collects data from every bike in the room, tracks each rider’s performance throughout the class and allows instructors to control intervals and build teams for friendly competition. At the end of each class, riders have an opportunity to see their own ranking in the class, along with their team’s final ranking! You can even have your personal results sent to you using an app or email.

NEW: Weekend Endurance Ride
The Brambleton Center will host three new classes this Fall: Weekend Endurance Ride, an hour and a half long class on Saturdays at 9:00 am, Spin It to Win It, a pulsepounding, cardio ride on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:45 pm and Ride for 45 (minutes), a 45 minute lunchtime class on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00 pm. According to Lori, cycling packs a powerful cardio and lower body workout with a tremendous amount of flexibility depending on your fitness goals. “Any fitness level can participate! You make it more or less challenging through your own bike settings, and can easily adjust the resistance level for each song or workout. In a typical 60-minute class you burn anywhere from 600 to 800 calories.” Green Ridge Recreation Center is also getting ready to replace their bikes with 25 of the same interactive Keiser M3i cycles, as part of the biggest equipment upgrade since the facility opened in January, 2010. Stay tuned for details about this exciting news. Now no matter which Roanoke County facility you choose to meet your fitness needs, you’ll be able to cycle your way to better health.
Bring a towel, water bottle and some determination for this hour and a half long cycle ride! Improve your stamina and compliment your current workout routine with this cycle class. Enjoy a class with a guaranteed seat and ride alongside the same cyclists every class. A state of the art cycle intelligence system will track personal statistics and create cycle teams. T’ai Chi (T’ai Chi Chuan)
Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. Six week program at the Brambleton Center. MOVE
Preschool gymnastics classes at Green Ridge are filled with obstacle courses, tunnels, and exciting lesson plans, but your time spent with us is not all fun and games. Not only are they JAM-PACKED with fun, new activities in each class, they offer extensive physical work on balance, coordination, and motor skills. Sounds great, right? I’m not done yet! Our instructors are instilling intellectual learning into each class! Your little tots will be counting, using shapes, colors, sounds, music, and engaging all 5 senses! We haven’t forgotten about good listening skills! Our most asked question by parents is, ‘What can a 3 year old really do at gymnastics? ’ The answer is, ‘LOTS’, let us show you!
School Age Gymnastics
Each and every gymnast in our recreational program receives multitudes of one-on-one attention! This class boosts selfesteem and confidence as each gymnast will soon see their skills improving and bodies toning. We give our gymnasts big goals and encourage them to push themselves to succeed! Although this gymnastics class is not being held in an actual gymnastics facility, we will continue to be extremely goal oriented as we work balance, tumbling, coordination and more! Our classes are based off of USAG curriculum and mixed in with fun and effective drills. These classes will be training on a multitude of equipment. Our Beginner Program at Green Ridge is an entry level class that introduces the wonderful sport of gymnastics and builds up basic skills so one day we can move to a more advanced class! AGES

Quick Start Tennis
QuickStart Tennis is a new format to help children seven and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately - even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: $39 and includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned. AGES

FROM
BERMUDATO BRAMBLETON
C
arlos Dowling has been a pottery instructor at the Brambleton Center for six years. The Bermuda native has spent his life around the world, using his talent to create, educate and instruct others in the arts. From Bermuda, to England, to New York City, to Brambleton, this is his story. His passion for art did not begin in pottery, but in sculpting. As a 13-year-old growing up in Bermuda, Dowling was fortunate to earn an apprenticeship under the late Byllee Lang, an awardwinning sculptor from Canada who moved to Bermuda. This old-type apprenticeship, according to Dowling, consisted of working in the studio on a daily basis with Lang. His training continued for five years until Lang’s passing. “She wanted me to have a relationship with clay where I could still get paid and continue my sculpting pursuit,” said Dowling. Lang was instrumental in building Dowling’s passion for pottery. Dowling earned a scholarship, which was set up after his teacher had passed, in her remembrance. He was able to further his education in England at North Staffordshire College of Technology, which had a program in place to teach the managers of big pottery firms. During his time at North Staffordshire, he was awarded an apprenticeship at the nearby Wedgewood Factory. At the time, Bermuda had only one pottery studio. Dowling’s education and apprenticeship’s presented him with terrific

training opportunities. “Being that Bermuda had no potters, the potters who came to run the factories were considered ‘master potters,’ knowing every aspect of the job.” When he moved back to Bermuda, Dowling ran two potteries and trained his staff at the time. In regards to the opportunity, “That is what I think has helped me most with my teaching skills.” For the most part, Carlos has functioned as a freelance artist where he gets to exercise his talent. Dowling does not gravitate toward a particular style or look with his art. Instead, he uses his environment and experiences to inspire his work. His résumé of contracted work includes: IBM, Sarah Coventry, Jacques Cousteau, and Columbia Pictures film “The Deep”. One of his well-known productions is the ASPCA crest at the national headquarters in New York City. Dowling regards his sculpture of Sally Bassett as one of his best works. The Government of Bermuda commissioned Dowling, through a parliamentary process, to create the 10 foot, 1,200 ton bronze sculpture. The sculpture took 6 months to complete, and was shipped to a foundry in Baltimore that molded the original sculpture into bronze. Dowling, reflecting on the process, stated, “It was quite an exciting and exhilarating process, which doesn’t happen in a potter’s life.” The sculpture was unveiled in 2008 at Bermuda’s government grounds.

Pottery Courses
Dowling is the instructor for the Absolute Beginners pottery course at the Brambleton Center. Not only is he an instructor, Dowling is a student at the same time. “I am taking classes from these teachers because I know that everybody brings something to the table.” This approach aids his ability to be an effective pottery teacher. When asked why he teaches pottery, Carlos stated, “The skill of pottery is one of the oldest known to man, and I want to keep it alive as much as I can because the art has given so much to me.” According to Carlos, we all have art in us and it is the instructor’s responsibility to help the student to embark on the journey to see how much art they possess within themselves. For individuals who do not feel “creative,” Dowling doesn’t allow this mindset. He compares pottery to riding a bicycle, which requires patience. “At first when you get your balance, you say ‘Ah! I can ride!’ That is what I like to see, when the individual says ‘Ah! I can do this!’” Once the student finds discovery through their art it is self-perpetuating. If you are interested beginning a journey with clay, sign up for the Absolute Beginners pottery course this fall. Classes take place on Thursday’s during September 15th to November 3rd from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. For more information about fees, studio time and course number, please see page 31 or call (540)777-7529. .

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SERVICES
LEARN
THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SERVICES CELEBRATES 40 YEARS I
t started out in the summer of 1976. Roanoke County received a small grant to run a summer camp for youth with disabilities called ACE (Activities Created for Enrichment). Not only did that program survive for 40 years, but it was the start of a regional effort to provide recreation services for an entirely new population. Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is now the region’s service provider for this important community program, with funding assistance from our partners in the City of Roanoke and City of Salem. We serve over 400 people through approximately 130 different programs each year.
straightforward objectives, such as teaching a child to swim or an adult to paint with watercolor. Therapeutic recreation programs have recreation, social and individual objectives. As an example, if an individual who had a head injury was participating in an exercise class at Green Ridge Recreation Center, they’re learning more than how to use a fitness machine. They’re also learning (or perhaps re-learning) how to socially interact with other participants. They may also be strengthening memory skills such as recalling where the restrooms are located or remembering to bring water with them when they exercise.
Betsy Dennis was the first supervisor of Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) and served over 30 years before retiring in 2008. She reflects that when the program began it was unique in the region and one of a small but growing number of similar programs available anywhere. In the early 1980’s Roanoke County’s TRS was honored as one of the top three in the nation.
Additional support is needed in TRS programs, to work with the participants on reaching both their individual goals and the overall goals of the program. Typically, TRS programs have 16 participants and 4 to 5 staff instructors. The support staff understand the needs of each participant and work with them on tasks like counting back change after a purchase or completing an art project handover-hand. An important part of TRS programs is the process, not the end result. Support staff do not complete projects for participants, but work alongside them tailoring the instruction to their learning style.
“Many lives have been positively impacted over the years, with many smiles and echoes of laughter,” Betsy remembers. “I have seen many individuals ‘grow up’ in the program with initial participation in the ACE program as a youngster to continued participation though 40 years, demonstrating a truly successful leisure lifestyle.” Therapeutic Recreation Services programs are unique, not just because of the participants, but due to the way they are structured. Most typical Roanoke County recreation classes have
42

According to TRS supervisor Kari Decker, the primary goal of every program is to improve the overall wellbeing of participants. “We help participants learn skills to work with others. You have to keep in mind most participants don’t have their own transportation. Think about your life! How would you make friends, engage, and interact? We work with them to develop relationships to fit within
their life. Things like phone etiquette, safety on the internet. We provide the environment where friends get to see each other while enhancing their individual living skills.” In honor of the 40th anniversary this year, TRS has adopted a new set of goals to apply to every recreation programs offered. They come from Martin Seligman’s book Flourish – A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Wellbeing. It’s a self-help book on how to get true fulfillment in life. • Positive emotion – Having a positive opinion of yourself and the world around you. This can be challenging with or without a disability. • Achievement – Getting the ability to achieve something that will help other people. People with disabilities often struggle to find fulfilling work as they are limited in their job opportunities. This year’s programs feature a community service component so participants can have the satisfaction of giving back.
• Engagement – Getting to know other people to try new things. If you’re not working 40 hours a week and have no transportation, how do you engage with others? How do you make friends? This type of engagement is a component of every TRS program. • Positive Relationship – Once you’ve engaged with another person through an activity, how do you maintain the relationship you’ve established? This is as important for an individual with a disability as anyone else on the planet. In 40 years, the TRS program has grown into a meaningful service that provides a tremendous community benefit. Youth Services Manager Marcia Dougherty was a young staff member when the program started, but looks back on it as one of Roanoke County’s greatest success stories. “We’ve taken overnight trips with folks which we wouldn’t have expected to 40 years ago. We’ve gone canoeing, played baseball, learned new skills and made new friends. You find people who have challenges in daily life can do anything anyone else can do. It’s something you have in your mind you think a person can’t achieve but then seeing them succeed, even if it takes a little longer, makes you feel good.” What’s next for Therapeutic Recreation? According to Kari Decker, the program will continue to grow and develop. “The trend in Virginia is moving individuals out of institutions and into communities. Community recreation will continue to grow. Because our programs are of such high quality, we have waitlists for many of them. People come to the programs, have an amazing time and want to continue to come back. The services we offer to our participants help the community as a whole because we are helping people with disabilities interact and become an important part of their community. The success we’ve had so far shows Roanoke County treats all people with respect.”

Aqua Sculpt
Aqua Sculpt is a high energy, non-impact co-ed class. It is not a traditional bouncy aerobics class, instead the exercises used in this class focus on core strength using levels two and three (no bounce and suspension). The natural resistance of the water sculpts the inches away. This is an excellent class for the person who wants a non-impact class and wants to transition to our HydroPower class. AGES

Outdoor Cooking
Cast iron skillets, tin foil, and cake! W
EXPLORE
hen you’ve spent four months of your life hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, you learn a few things! For some people it’s learning to push your body to the limits. For others, it how to keep dry during a storm. For Roanoke County recreation leader Susan Powell, it was how to cook in the great outdoors.
50
“I think things taste better on the trail,” says Susan. “Because you’re surrounded by beautiful terrain, you’ve expended a lot of energy, and you’ve had the satisfaction of preparing it on your own. It makes you feel good.” Whether it’s picking raspberries along the trail for a Dutch Oven cobbler, or adapting a traditional recipe to be lighter in your backpack by dehydrating the ingredients, Susan figured out how to get the best possible taste into the smallest backpack. We’re not just talking tin-foil wrapped ham-
burgers in the campfire, either! When Susan goes camping, she prepares full meals such as baked pasta, stir-fry, stews and even desserts. Did you know you can make a cake over the fire by hollowing out an orange, pouring in cake batter and wrapping foil around it? “I like to cook gourmet meals high in calories when I’m camping”, says Susan. “Sometimes I do 20 miles a day and I need food that keeps my energy up but has proper nutrition and doesn’t make me feel bad. You can buy camp meals off the shelf for about $12$15, but I can prepare better tasting meals on my own for about $5.” Susan is excited to be sharing her cooking tips again this fall in a class that has been enjoyed by veteran and novice campers alike. Participants will prepare and take home recipes for 10 different meals, while learning about proper technique and maybe getting

a few camping tips along the way. She plans to focus on the following areas: • Dutch Oven – This type of cooking offers the most versatility. You can cook a variety of one-pot meals or desserts just like you would in your home oven. • Campfire meals – Cooking over an open fire, but with a bit of a gourmet flare! • Car camping – Having a propane stove is just like your two-burner range at home. Susan will show you a few tried and true meals that have good flavor and don’t take too many pots and pans. • Backpacking – Ditch the expensive pre-packaged meals and learn to lighten your load while on the trail while still eating well. Susan’s favorites are pesto pasta and a roasted red pepper dish. According to Susan, you shouldn’t be afraid to try out your recipe at home before
your camping trip. Make sure you have the right mix of ingredients and quantities before you hit the trail. To give you a little “taste” of what’s in store if you take the class, we’ve included a couple camp recipes to try at home. Participants in Roanoke County’s outdoor cooking program are bound to come away with a few new skills, or at least a better appreciation of spending time with nature. Susan Powell believes that the more time you spend outside, the more you learn to appreciate the Earth’s abundant beauty. “In the Roanoke Valley, it’s right outside our back door! My passion is getting people of all ages outside, especially the younger generation. The more you know about the outdoors, the more you want to protect it and get involved in giving back. If my cooking can help get more people outside, I’m one step closer to helping folks get out there and protect the wild places that I love.”
Outdoor Cooking
From the backyard to the backcountry, there is more to outdoor cooking than hotdogs over the fire and dehydrated food from a bag. Join us at Camp Roanoke for a cooking adventure as we teach you how easy it can be to cook delicious and healthy meals outdoors! This class will cover multiple types of camping stoves, dutch oven cooking, and cooking directly over a fire. With 500 nights camped and 6000 miles hiked in the last eight years, Outdoor Educator Susan Powell has fed many a happy camper. She will surely be able to pass along some edible tidbits for the aspiring outdoor chef. All cooking supplies and food are included. Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. AGES
