County Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Dear friends and neighbors,
O
utdoor recreation opportunities abound in Roanoke County, especially as we enter another beautiful fall season. In recent years our region has developed a great reputation as one of the East Coast’s best destinations for outdoor fun. Our department has been at the forefront of a regional effort to demonstrate to the world what our residents already know - that Roanoke County is an amazing place to live. This publication contains an exciting mix of activities for your family to explore. Right now we’re laying the groundwork for even more recreation amenities as we develop a master plan for Explore Park. These are the early stages of a multi-year process that will transform the facility into an attraction we can all be proud of. Changes won’t happen overnight, but with the right partnerships we will be able to build on the region’s already successful outdoor brand. I look forward to continued community input throughout this process, and an exciting future for Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Sincerely,

W
e landed at Cam Rahn Bay airport and on opening the doors of the chartered aircraft from the States, we heard popping sounds—we soon realized the airport was taking mortar and artillery rounds. They asked us to quickly disembark and the plane took off—running across the tarmac, we began to experience a new “normal” in a strange land. The former passengers soon transformed to their military role and moved to the reception station for what at best would be a 12-month assignment and then a return plane ride to family. For too many it was less than 12 months and for 1,627 still MIA, it has been much more. My assignments covering nearly 15 months included Saigon, MACV Headquarters, and Long Bien, 21st Logistical Support Command, and Duc Hoa, home of the 25th ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) Division. I remember the near daily sirens warning of incoming rounds, the less frequent ground probes of our perimeter, the “Firefly” missions, the leeches, the casualties, my fellow soldiers, but I have other memories of those 15 months too. --The bustling city of Saigon, broad boulevards filled with bicycles and motorcycles of all types belching black smoke --And the beaches at Vung Tau, on the South China Sea, which became a popular R&R Center --The verdant countryside that seemingly would grow anything, but mostly I remember the children in the village of Duc Hoa, Haugh Nia Province, close to the “Parrot’s Beak”. I met with a few of them and soon started “teaching” English and being taught Vietnamese in my spare time. They were bright, wanting to learn, and too often lamented the plight of their country, but never did I hear self pity. Even today, nearly 50 years later, I still wonder—what happened to those 22 children after the war? Did they survive the Communist takeover? Did their little knowledge of English get them into trouble with their new regime? A popular song during this time was “I wanna go home” and no doubt, all of us did. We had a job to do and we did it. But none of us expected or deserved the “reception” we received upon returning to our homeland. Now is the time to make this right. Now is the time for all of us to understand, we must support our troops regardless of government policy. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and government civilians—all with the support of their families, responded to their country’s call. Praise them for their honorable service; welcome them home! John Miller • COL, USA (Ret)

Mike & Chris Morris - Green Ridge Members
I
started taking group fitness classes about 18 months before Mike did. I had been coming to the gym & using the cardio & weight machines. I was intimidated by the group fitness classes. I took my first class as part of the members wellness challenge. I was hooked! The classes pushed me farther than I ever pushed myself. I found that as I came to the classes, people like to have their same space. Kind of like church pews, people are creatures of habit. As I took the classes, I got to know the people around me & have become friends with them. The instructors are one of the best parts about the group exercise classes. The instructors look for you, they are very supportive of your goals & abilities. Mike began the same way I did. He used the cardio & weight machines. We both were embarrassingly overweight. Mike was intimidated by the group classes too. Mike finally conceded to my constant goading to try the classes. He took Anita’s cycle class & was hooked! He loved it & now takes cycle & body pump religiously. We both have made life long friends, with both the other Green Ridge members & instructors. We love the classes, love Green Ridge & plan to stay members for a very long time.

Running for Health By Laura Mitchell of

e all know that regular aerobic exercises such as running can improve your physical health. But did you know that running can also improve brain function? And if that’s not enough motivation, there’s this: running for just a half-hour can improve your mood for the rest of the day. Healthy Body Running burns calories and strengthens your muscles and joints. It can help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and conditions such as high blood pressure. And a 30-minute run a few days a week can strengthen your heart. Exercise truly is medicine. Worried about injury? You can avoid common running-related complaints, such as knee pain and iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome, by balancing your aerobic exercise with weight training and yoga. “Stretching after exercise can also be very helpful,” says Christopher John, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon with Carilion Clinic. To further minimize the risk of injury, Dr. John recommends that you “make sure you start exercising with moderate intensity, and gradually build up your endurance.” Healthy Mind Exercising regularly can help prevent or slow age-related cognitive decline. Aerobic exercise such as running significantly improves memory, language and concentration. This is true for ev-

3rd Annual eryone regardless of age—and although a lifetime of exercise can promote a lifetime of good health, you can benefit from exercise no matter when you start!
Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a beginner, running has benefits in store for you. You don’t have to run fast, and you don’t have to run far. You can run on a treadmill, a sidewalk or a trail in the woods. No matter how you run, every step you take is a step toward better health.

Healthy Spirit You don’t have to be a serious athlete to experience “runner’s high.” Running for about 30 minutes a few times a week can improve your mood, even for people who struggle with anxiety or depression. Some runners speak of a peaceful state of mind similar to that gained from meditation. And the positive effects can last long after the run, leading to improved sleep and a better ability to cope with day-to-day stress.

Instructors Cecelia McKee (right, shown with Lori Fadorick) co-created Fitness Fight Club, a group exercise class exclusive to Green Ridge Recreation Center. This is the story about how she became an instructor!
F
or about the last eight years or so, I have wanted to be a group exercise instructor. I want to inspire others to work harder, push their limits, and make changes in their bodies and lives. I finally became a group exercise instructor after being a member at Green Ridge Recreation Center for 6 months and this is why. I joined Green Ridge Recreation Center in January of 2014. I loved the family atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff, and, of course, KidZone. I quickly became a regular participant in several group exercise classes. During an Attack class, Tanya, the instructor, asked if I was an Attack instructor and then said if I wasn’t then I should be. After class, Tanya stayed and talked with me about my back burner goal of being an instructor. After we spoke, she put me in contact with Ashley Gautier. I then received my first of now many group exercise certifications in June of 2014. I knew from the start where I wanted to work. I wanted to surround myself with and be mentored by the best group exercise instructors. And the best are at Green Ridge! If you are interested in becoming a group exercise instructor, go for it! Think about the class you just love to take and go up and talk to the instructor. Please know you can speak with Chelsea Arner, Ashley Gautier, and any of the instructors. We are more than happy to listen to you and to tell you our stories.

T’ai Chi
Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Six week program. QuickStart Tennis is a new format to help children seven and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately - even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: $39 and includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned. AGES

Smart Cycling Presented in partnership with:
T
he Roanoke Valley is an increasingly popular and safe place to ride a bicycle, whether for recreation or transportation. With gorgeous rural vistas, miles of greenways and on-road bike lanes, and hundreds of miles of off-road trails for mountain biking, no matter how you want to cycle or where you want to go, chances are you can get there on two wheels. But as more and more people cycle, it becomes increasingly important for people – no matter what kind of vehicle you’re piloting – to share the road. Whether you’re behind the wheel or hunched over the handlebars, every vehicle has a right and responsibility to use our roads safely, which means following all traffic laws, giving plenty of space to other road users, and behaving predictably and respectfully. As the Roanoke Valley adds more bike lanes and more greenways, it’s becoming even easier and safer for folks to ride for transportation. They may be riding to work, riding to the store or out to dinner, or just riding to visit friends instead of driving. Because they’re riding for transportation, they’ll be on roads that, as a driver, you may not have expected to see them, and they may be riding at times when traffic is heavier than a cyclist might be used to – such as rush hour. It’s important, as a driver, to respect the cyclist’s right to be there, and it’s important, as a cyclist, to be safe and predictable while riding so drivers know what to expect from you. The more everyone acts like a vehicle on the road, the safer everyone will be. Here are a few other tips to help everyone have a safer trip: • In Virginia, when passing a cyclist, a motor vehicle must allow at least three (3) feet of distance between the car and the bicycle. Passing too close is both dangerous and against the law.
Learn
Tips on How to Share the Road!
• Cyclists may use the full travel lane, even if a bicycle lane is present. Sometimes trash, gravel, and broken glass can be swept into a bike lane or shoulder, making conditions dangerous for cyclists. • Cyclists are considered vehicles on the road, and must obey all traffic signals and signs, including stop lights and stop signs. Because some stop lights may not be triggered by the presence of a bicycle, cyclists may go through a stop light after one full cycle or two minutes if safe. Remember, cyclists aren’t obstacles - they are our parents, siblings, coworkers, and neighbors. Respect everyone’s right to be on the road. For more information about safe riding and sharing the road, visit us online and Change Your Perspective at ridesolutions.org/ changeyourperspective.

Making a Differince Through Community Service By Alex North, Intern 2014, 2015
H
ave you visited a Roanoke County park lately? If so, you may have seen volunteers hard at work painting, staining, mulching, landscaping, and improving our public play areas. These volunteers are part of Roanoke County’s Park Partners Program, which is currently made up 225 people representing individuals and organizations from across the Roanoke Valley. The Park Partners Program was established in 2008. Participation in the program is open to any individual or group with the completion of a two-year agreement, which includes a minimum of four scheduled work days. Involvement has increased since Shawn Sorrells, Roanoke County’s Parks Administrator, and Lindsay Blankenship, Roanoke County’s Greenway Planner, took control of the program. “In about three years, we’ve added about 12 groups and 200 people to Park Partners,” according to Sorrells. Volunteers participating in the Park Partners Program receive recognition from Roanoke County through installation of a sign at their adopted park or greenway. Additionally, Roanoke County provides t-shirts to all volunteers. The Rotary Club of the Roanoke Valley adopted Starkey Park in 2013 and is one of 15 organizations involved in the program. Tarek Moneir, Rotary Club of the Roanoke Valley’s Secretary, has been involved in the process since the beginning. “Many of the children of our Rotarians grew up playing in Starkey Park. As they came back and visited with their children’s children, we started to see the park needed some help,” said Moneir. The partnership started when the Rotarians discussed the best ways to help Starkey Park. They wanted to help with the walkways within Starkey Park to improve accessibility for individuals with mobility issues. Once the Rotary Club reached out to Roanoke County, they became Park Partners. As of July 11, the Rotary Club of the Roanoke Valley has provided 48 volunteer hours at Starkey Park in 2015. With 14 volunteers,

the Rotarians have completed projects such as mulching the playground, staining picnic tables, cleaning-up the park, and repairing and staining pedestrian bridges. Regarding the time period for the work days, “It takes four to five hours depending on the weather, task and number of volunteers,” said Moneir. Volunteer hours are tracked through activity reports which are filled out on each work day completed by a Park Partner. The activity report is important according to Sorrells because, “We can count how many volunteers they had, how many hours they worked and the tasks accomplished.” Not only does this help the Park Partners while working on tasks at their specific location, it also helps Sorrells and Blankenship to keep a record of completed and upcoming projects in the various Roanoke County Parks. Volunteers are the eyes and ears for the Park Partners Program. Activity reports often generate additional work orders for Roanoke County’s parks crews, to ensure maintenance and safety issues are quickly addressed.
“Seeing the kids out here makes all our hard work on a Saturday worth it!” -Volunteer This summer, the Rotarians helped Roanoke County prepare for a state tournament by painting press boxes and a storage shed. The Little League 11U State Tournament held at Starkey Park from Thursday, July 16 to Tuesday July 21. Twelve teams from the Commonwealth played in the tournament at Starkey Park. The Rotarian’s hard work on the press boxes paid off, as they were used for each game. Rotarians like Scott Williams found the project enjoyable. “It is nice to make something look good, but it is much better when we see kids being able to enjoy it. Seeing the kids out here makes all of our hard work on a Saturday worth it!” Garland Bowman, another member of the Rotary Club of the Roanoke Valley, said, “We arrive to work on a Saturday morning when there are a couple of people walking their dogs and kids on the playground. But to actually see these baseball teams, you get a feel for what the facility is doing.”
Williams added, “All of these 12 teams come from all over the state of Virginia to a facility that is looking good. They take that home and it makes them more likely to come back to Roanoke and visit.” “The people that started Starkey Park recognize the difference and improvements our Rotary Club has provided,” said Moneir. When he and other Rotarians are working at the park, some visitors think they work for Roanoke County. “When we tell them we are volunteers, it gives them a different thought. One time some people in the park asked, ‘Can we volunteer too?’” said Moneir. The difference made by the Rotary Club is rewarding and sparks others who want to volunteer with future tournaments and Park Partners projects. In addition to the volunteer labor provided by the Rotarians to beautify and maintain Starkey Park, the Club has made generous financial contributions to Roanoke County. In June 2014, the Rotary Club of Roanoke Valley donated over $5,600 for park improvements at Starkey Park. A portion of this funding was used to provide three benches in the park. One bench is located at the playground and two are located along pedestrian trails. Each bench features a cast bronze plaque and a concrete paver with the Rotary International logo. Additionally, the Club sponsored signs at the Starkey Park entrances advising patrons to drive carefully through the park.
In the first six months of the year the Rotary Club put in over 48 volunteer hours.
In regards to future projects at Starkey Park, the Rotary Club of the Roanoke Valley plans to finish staining and painting the other press boxes and improve trail connectivity throughout the park. According to Moneir, the group will continue cleaning the park facilities and Back Creek, which runs through the park. “The cleaning takes all year long and is a continuous process,” said Moneir. Without the assistance of the Park Partners Program, the parks crews would be stretched thin during the busy summer season. Park Partners like the Rotarians, are an integral part of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Next time you visit Starkey Park or any of Roanoke County’s parks, remember that the hard work of volunteers goes a long way. If you have any questions about the Park Partners Program or want to apply to become a Park Partner, visit www.RoanokeCountyParks.com or call us at 540.387.6078.

CANOEING WITH A NATURALIST
River Exploration With a Naturalist! Paddlers launch into the Roanoke River in Explore Park. New this fall, experience the river in a whole new way!
O
ne of Explore Park’s most amazing features is a two mile stretch of river frontage along the Roanoke River. Compared to sections of the river that flow through Salem and the City of Roanoke, this slice of nature sees relatively little human contact. It’s referred to simply as the Roanoke River Gorge.
Explore
Travel down the river by canoe through Explore Park and you’ll see beautiful mountain vistas, lush forest vegetation, a few class I and II rapids, and a wide array of wildlife. For the past year staff naturalist Tara Poelzing has been leading groups down to the river by foot as part of our popular 12-Months, 12-Hikes program. This fall she’ll be leading an expedition even deeper into the water with a new program called Canoeing with a Naturalist. According to Tara, learning to appreciate nature on the river is like getting to see the other side of the mirror. “I think speaking from my experience canoeing, until I understood what was around me I felt like I was on a water road going between forests. Our lives are fast paced enough that we are in a mode of moving quickly. We’re in automobiles so much we are used to having the world whizz by us. We feel guilty moving slowly because we’re not accomplishing something. However, once you start seeing the world around you, the view expands beyond the water and suddenly everything opens up. You become aware that you’re no longer just driving through a tunnel of forest. Time in nature can be both educational and restorative.” Preparation for Canoeing with a Naturalist begins long before participants strap on their life vests. Staff will begin with a scouting trip to determine the best places to find wildlife along the river, including areas of the shoreline with good access to the water

such as beaches and clearings. They’ll also study which creatures are active at various times during the day. For example, avian life such as Herons and Osprey are more likely to be active and visible in the morning. Finally, staff will map a route that is easy to navigate by boat – finding places you can get close to the bank without getting tangled in branches, or eddies in the water where you can hold your position and examine nature for a while. Why study nature from a canoe? Here are a few reasons to climb aboard: • Quieter approach – Humans walking on a path through the woods can make a lot of noise. You’re more likely to see animal activity when they’re not scared away. • New sightlines – Sometimes getting a new angle helps you make new observations. In a canoe you’re as low to the waterline as possible, offering new insight. • Unobstructed views – No matter where you are on the shoreline, chances are you don’t have a 360 degree view of your surroundings. On the open water you can see in every direction. • Inaccessible areas – Unless you relish getting lost in the woods, chances are you’ll stick to the trail when you’re observing nature. Especially on this portion of the Roanoke River, you can get up close to many areas virtually untouched by humans. • Different activity – On the water you’ll see different types of animals, or the same types doing different activities. We’re not just talking about fish here!
Exploring the world with a naturalist can help you see things from a different perspective. Naturalist Tara Poelzing believes that there’s more to it than just a scientific lecture. “Naturalists aren’t here to talk at you. We’re here to introduce you to the natural world so you can enjoy it yourself with a deeper understanding. We’re here to draw your attention to those pieces of the puzzle and how they fit together. In short, a naturalist makes you slow down.” Over the past year, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism has seen the popularity of outdoor and nature programs at Explore Park continue to rise. Since July 2014, over 450 individuals have taken part in a guided recreation activity. With the addition of water based education programs, participants will have the opportunity to see nature in a whole new way. Tara is excited about the possibilities. “You never get to stop learning when you’re out in nature, there’s so much going on. It’s just fascinating. “

hroughout the fall, you’ll be seeing Explore Park in the news frequently as we work to gather community input and develop a new master plan for the facility. Since taking over operation of the property in late 2013, we’ve re-opened trails, refurbished buildings and expanded our lineup of recreation programs and camps. Now we’re ready for the next step! Developing a master plan will help set the stage for future growth and development at the park, in a way that fits with our community’s vision. Goals of the plan are as follows: • Establish the framework, design and guidelines and strategic direction for future development of trails, amenities and open space. • Promote the park’s economic, societal and environmental sustainability while providing a means of successful implementation. • Provide a template for future design and construction at the site. Explore the outdoors with Roanoke County Parks. No equipment or previous experience needed!
