Linda Parker brings an exciting new form of dance to Brambleton this Fall. Since she began dancing, Linda has lost nearly 70 pounds.

Line Dancing
Not Just Boots & Cowboy Hats
L
ine dancing. When you read that word what comes to mind? Dusty barns, loud twangy music, and leather boots stomping around…right? Well, Line Dancing is not what it used to be. In fact, here in Southwest Virginia it’s taking on a whole new name: “LineDanz.” It has morphed into a new world-infused dance style, one that is very different from what you have pictured in your mind. Linda Parker, of DanzaBrava LineDanz, has been on the cusp of this new wave of change since the beginning.
Linda Parker’s story is not unlike many of our own. She never set out in life to be where she is today, but now that she’s here, she loves it! Part of her amazing story is not where she is now, but where she began 18 years ago. Linda was a heavy woman, weighing in at over 200 pounds and a dress size of 18/20. She was essentially trapped in her own body. The day had come where enough was enough for her “big” life, but nothing seemed right for her. Dieting didn’t work, aerobics classes were painful and left her feeling hurt and angry, and none of it showed her that healthy living could be FUN! That was of course, until she found an old VHS of Line Dancing Instruction at a consignment shop. With the love and support of her family and friends, Linda was able to follow her new found passion for Dance. After years of teaching others what she herself has found to be true, Linda has made the improbable a reality. With her now much healthier size of 7/9, she is showing people that healthy doesn’t need to be boring. According to Linda, “LineDanz will work every muscle in your body, including your brain”. She says “…today’s LineDanz offers so much more. With regards to style, we dance to just about anything that has a beat”. When people give her the usual excuses for not taking part, she tells them “You don’t have to be a great dancer. If you can count to eight and you can tell your left foot from your right, then let’s get on the floor!” Linda’s hope for the future is that people will “… step out, step in
and take a chance on LineDanz. It’s not the line dancing you used to know; it’s fresh and new. “ Linda has choreographed dances that are taught all over the world. She is currently teaching at the world-famous Phase 2 Nightclub and is a former NTA (National Teachers Association) State Director of Country & Western Dance for Virginia. She has worked at events for the US Army and their soldiers getting ready to deploy to Iraq, Cotillion, and many more.

Fall Photos By Maureen Wilson
Tips from the Pros
life
T
he Summer heat haze is leaving, bringing the cool, crisp breath of Autumn. It’s time to get out and watch nature begin to unfold one of its greatest shows, a warm hued color explosion! Here in the Roanoke Valley, we have some of the greatest views in the country. The Blue Ridge Mountains are at our back door just waiting to be captured with your favorite camera. With all that our busy lives entail sometimes it’s easy to just pass by and not take a moment to enjoy its beauty. But, taking some time to relax and enjoy it can really bring a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stagnant week. This could be as simple as picking up a camera and walking into your very own backyard or maybe a local park. With some quick and easy tips from Roanoke County photography instructor Chuck Almarez, of Fire and Light Gallery, you can start to capture the beauty that’s around you every day. Tip # 1: You don’t have to go far to get the perfect shot Some of the best photos can actually come from your own neighborhood. The locations and objects you see every day can be shown in a different way simply by changing the hours you shoot. For example, shooting in the hours of sunrise or sunset (known in the trade as the “magic hours”) provides more dramatic lighting and unusual colors. Tip # 2: Change your perspective Basic shots can be fun, but sometimes you just want to do more than just record the scene. Chuck says just changing your perspective or camera angle is an easy way to make a routine image a lot more interesting. Look for an angle that no one else sees. If you’re taking a photo of a flower, get the camera under the flower so the sky is the back drop. Changing your perspective can provide new and dramatic views of everyday objects and change a yawn to a Wow! Tip # 3: Don’t let bad weather hold you back According to Chuck “...really bad weather usually makes for really great photos”. Now, don’t run out in the middle of a storm with your camera. However, if you wait until just after the storm when the ground is wet and the grey clouds are still lurking, you’ll capture a unique scene that others might miss. Tip #4: Get creative with image editing software. The next step is to learn digital image editing and make your images really special. Editing software is more powerful and easier to use than ever. Learn the techniques that will let you make the image you want from the one you took. If you have questions or want to learn even more from Chuck then check out our Fall class schedule and see what amazing adventures you can find yourself on by attending his classes. I am sure you will not be disappointed!

Swim Time For Homeschoolers By Maureen Wilson
I
Rebecca Capuano has been at member of Green Ridge for some time now and uses the facilities every chance she gets. She is a stay at home mom, who homeschools her two children. Rebecca goes to Green Ridge for the great workout room and play center for the kids, and her kids take advantage of the indoor pool area during their visits. Rebecca has been involved in a new set of classes that Green Ridge has offered that are specifically arranged for homeschoolers. She says “My daughter was involved in a smaller class, which allowed the instruc-
tor to give more of a one on one lesson to my daughter. The instructor was able to help my daughter improve her stroke and become confident in the water.” Aquatics Manager Tanya Richardson says that Green Ridge’s aquatics curriculum is the perfect combination of physical education and proper instruction for swimmers. “Not only do children develop their swimming confidence but they learn about water safety around a swimming pool and other aquatic environments. Our classes are offered at times to accommodate families during the regular school hours.” She and the Green Ridge staff are committed to providing opportunities for all children to learn the important life skill of learning to swim and being safe around the water. Green Ridge Recreation Center has many opportunities available for families looking to extend their child’s learning. If you or someone you know would like more information on our swim lessons please contact Tanya Richardson at 777-6300 or email her at Trichardson@roanokecountyva.gov . .

Homeschool Lessons
P
Having the opportunity to get your children out of the home for educational time is not only beneficial but also necessary for homeschooling families. Jannett Wilson, a mother of four and homeschooler of all four of her kids, believes that “In a classroom you’re tied down to the room you’re assigned, but the biggest benefit of homeschooling is being able to get out and use the world as your classroom.” As a long time homeschooler, Jannett says that having the ability to attend safe and affordable school related activities during the day allows her to separate school time from family time. The separation between those times is vital for the success of a homeschooling mother.
Many homeschool parents are turning to Green Ridge to help provide physical education.
Aquatics
n recent years, homeschooling has become a popular alternative to traditional education for a growing number of families. While it may seem like a new trend, the modern homeschool movement actually has its roots ingrained in our nation’s cultural history. Children were taught in the home traditionally for centuries with great success. What makes homeschooling different today? In an increasingly sedentary society, homeschool parents struggle to find affordable and safe physical activities to compliment their education.

Getting The Most
Out of Group Exercise
By Kasey Field, Carilion Clinic
W
hile many people find themselves working out solo, group exercise may be the more beneficial route for some of them in multiple ways. Quite frequently, there are instances where it just seems easier to skip exercising for the day. Whether it is “too busy” or “too tired,” excuses may find their way into cancelling the plans. Group exercise not only helps prevent this common mindset, but it can also incorporate a more social and enjoyable atmosphere to the routine of exercise. Working with a group of other people creates a supportive and motivational bond not only during the workout itself, but even when deciding whether to avoid heading to the gym altogether. Having that set timeframe when classes are held forces people to work their schedule around their gym time rather than avoiding the necessity for a healthy lifestyle. Jill Lucas and Julie Blanchard, both health educators for Carilion Clinic, are experienced group-exercise instructors. They agree that the group setting offers a lot of positives for those who choose to go that route. “One of the best motivators of group exercise comes from the financial side. If people have joined a gym and are taking a group exercise class there, they’re losing money if they do not attend,” Lucas said. “Often, that will get them off the couch and into the class.” Lucas also said that the accountability that is unique to group exercise keeps folks coming back. Plus, it can allow for quicker and
better results because you want to outwork others in the class. Losing the weight and keeping it off is usually the main concern when dealing with exercise, but learning the proper way to exercise is just as, if not more, important. Group exercise provides a trained group instructor who teaches the class how to properly perform the workout or the correct use of equipment, Blanchard said. This class structure prevents common injuries at the gym or home that could be avoided with professional instruction. Not only does it create a safer environment, but it allows people to learn how to use workout equipment that might have been intimidating before and therefore ignored, Blanchard added.
Wellness
“One of the best pros to group exercise is, it’s more fun than going it alone.”
One of the best pros to group exercise is quite simple. It may be more fun than going it alone. The group workout allows the unleashing of chemicals to the brain which create endorphins that are harder to obtain through working out alone. Even engaging in conversation with friends during workouts can pump up the heart rate and release stress. Moving around from different group exercises keeps people’s interest and works various muscles for more results. “Aside from the social motivators of group exercise, there is the competitive spirit, especially in mixed classes with women and men,” Blanchard said. “Neither the women nor the men want to get outdone by the other.” No matter which group exercise one chooses, the ultimate goal is to find enjoyable exercises, stick with it and create a long and healthy life.

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Another important aspect is the positive effect it has on circulation and stimulating blood flow to the organs. Six week program. Instructor: Denis Spencer.

Punt, Pass, Kick NFL’s National Competition By Maureen Wilson
T
OUCH DOWN! It’s time for the NFL’s PUNT, PASS & KICK competition here in Roanoke. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, this national skills competition challenges boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 to bring their game to the next level. With more than three million boys and girls from around the country taking part in PPK competitions every year from July through January, it is one of the world’s largest youth sports participation programs. Girls and boys in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) compete against each other in punting, passing and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.
Athletics
There has not been an entry fee for PPK since the program began in 1961; a fact that has helped it become arguably the most successful grassroots sports skills competition. Many NFL stars, including Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Dan Marino competed in the Punt, Pass and Kick program as youngsters. “This gives me a chance to play football without having to deal with any of the contact of playing football,” said 13 year old Margaret Kennelly after advancing to compete at Ralph Wilson Stadium during a Buffalo Bills game. Neal Graf, a Parks and Recreation Director from Wauseon, Ohio has volunteered with the program for the past 14 years. He says it was his involvement as a youth that helped lead him to a career in recreation. “Over the years I’ve developed many great relationships with participants and parents; many still stay in touch with me. There is something about this program that is unlike any other program I have been involved in. It develops family-type relationships with parents, participants and staff with those who choose to get involved.” This year’s local competition will be held at Walrond Park from 2pm to 3pm on Sunday, September 11th. The top finishers from each age group will move on to the sectionals. The Sectional PPK Competition will be held Sunday, October 16th, at 4 PM, in the Mountaineer Field behind Alleghany High School in Alleghany County. There are 10 sectionals in the Washington Redskins team area. Winners from all the sectionals will have their numbers compared to determine who advances to the Washington Redskins Team Competition that is conducted during one of the Redskin’s home games in late November or early December. The top five sectional winners in each age division advance to the Team Competition level! For more information on when the official game will be, you can visit the PPK website at www.nflppk.com. If you have questions or are interested in learning more about the PPK program, please contact Star Patton, Roanoke County’s Youth Athletics Supervisor, at 387-6078 ext 243. All program registration will go through the NFL website.

Great Beginnings is a five week instructional program targeting four, five and six year old boys and girls. The program’s goal is to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. Each child, along with his or her parents, work together to learn basic motor skills needed to successfully move on to more organized sports in years to come. As the program progresses, and children show improvement, the skill stations are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in youth sports. The program will also help develop the child’s motor and cognitive skills as well as provide wonderful social interaction.

Volunteers Welcome
Of the Future
Park Partners Make an Impact
Our new playground, at Starkey Park is one of the area’s most unique!
By Maureen Wilson

Outdoors
met Sue Scanlin on a bright and sunny day at Garst Mill Park. She had asked me to meet her on the bridge that overlooks Mud Lick Creek. Nestled in just the right spot between the playground and the tennis courts we had enough shade to relax and not be scorched by the already hot sun. Everyone that passed us on the bridge, stopped and chatted with her. She knew them all! With each passing moment, I began to see that Sue was not your average volunteer. She was Garst Mill Park’s local socialite. It seemed to me that if anyone wanted to know anything about Garst Mill Park and its visitors, she would be the one to ask. A local resident and long time volunteer, Sue is a straighforward woman with a friendly smile. She believes “the parks are an extension of our own backyards. We wouldn’t want to see them trashed or see dog droppings everywhere. The parks are public property, which makes it partly yours, and if it’s yours, then you should take care of it.” She and several other volunteers have been helping to maintain the park for the past two years. Lately, Sue has noticed a change in the littering habits of those who visit the park. “There is not as much litter on the ground as there was when we first started.” Sue isn’t doing this work all on her own. She relies on the help of a network of volunteers challenged with keeping Garst Mill Park beautiful. Shirley Pickeral, a local horticulturist, helps with the design of the flower beds and landscaping. Martha Lalka, a community resident, volunteers her time refilling dog refuse waste stations with recycled bags. These are just a few of the many volunteers who help keep Roanoke County’s public spaces looking beautiful.

Park Partner Sue Scanlin (right) and program coordinator Lindsay Blankenship (left) help keep our parks looking beautiful. Sue and her friends are a part of a program that Roanoke County has started called Park Partners. Lindsay Blankenship, Roanoke County’s Greenway Planner, says Park Partners helps promote regional cooperation between individuals and community organizations. “These partnerships are intended to encourage community involvement, improve park facilities and grounds, and promote environmental awareness. Through this program, citizens volunteer their time, labor, and talents to the maintenance and beautification of County parks and trails. The program requires a two-year commitment and activities include litter pick-up, pulling weeds, planting flowers, mulching, and painting.” Keeping our parks looking their best is not an easy task. Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Pete Haislip says Park Partners helps the County to maximize cost effectiveness by utilizing community help instead of taking up valuable staff time. “In times like these, money is tight and volunteers are needed. With help from great volunteers, we can continue to grow our parks and greenways; making them the valley’s most desired places to be.” If you would like to know more about the Park Partners program or if you are interested in volunteering within the County in a different program, please contact Lindsay Blankenship at 387–6078 ext 264 or email her at Lblankenship@roanokecountyva.gov.

Explore Your World
With countless opportunities, your chance to explore the country is right at hand!
By Friendship Retirement Community
T
he senior years are a great time to travel. With the flexibility of time and available discounts, seniors have more opportunities than ever to explore the world -- or their backyard. Joy of traveling doesn’t diminish with age. In fact, the lure of the road can be even stronger without worrying about work deadlines or raising families. As long as they’re healthy enough, seniors can travel as much as they’d like, says Susan O’Malley, a registered nurse and an administrator at Friendship Retirement Community in Roanoke. “Seniors have a zest for travel but they do have unique concerns related primarily to medical care,” O’Malley says. “That why we recommend seniors find out about medical facilities in destinations they’re planning to visit and plan ahead – whether it’s a checkup before leaving or making sure you have the proper medicines, vaccinations and dietary requirements for the trip.”
• People with diabetes will need medical advice on how to safely stagger their medications to fit a different time zone. • Consider having your flu and pneumonia vaccinations before you go on your trip.
At Friendship Retirement Community, for example, independent living residents enjoy regular trips to a diverse array of nearby destinations, including Poplar Forest, Smith Mountain Lake, Blue Ridge Parkway, National D-Day Memorial and more. For others, the road is a calling – whether by car, RV or motorcycle. “Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you need to slow down,” O’Malley says. “Traveling keeps you going, keeps you active and keeps you young.”

For example: • Be sure to discuss your trip and plan with your physician. Mention any particular health concerns you might have, such as dietary changes (local cuisine), time zone differences, and anything else with respect to your health.

A Lively Village, Union WV
Surrounded by rich farm lands and the Allegheny Mountains, historic Union was a frequent rest stop for soldiers during the Civil War. A guided tour of the Clark -Wiseman House circa 1810 is one of the more sophisticated structures built during that time period and the Owen Neel House circa 1790 shows the transition from pioneer one room cabins to a comfortable farmhouse. Special highlights of the day include guided tours of the Salt Sulphur Springs Resort and the Old Rehoboth Church. Salt Sulphur Springs opened as a resort in 1820 with Martin Van Buren and Henry Clay among the prominent guests. The main part of the hotel, bathhouse, spring house, chapel, store building and two cottages are still standing. It is the largest complex of stone buildings in West Virginia. The Old Rehoboth Church is the oldest church in the area, completed in June of 1786 and housing many historical artifacts. The final stop is Indian Creek Covered Bridge, built by two teenagers in the early 1900’s. This is a great photo opportunity. Lunch is in Union at Betty’s Korner Kafe. Established in 1997, the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond transports guests back in time to experience actual Holocaust events through the eyes of those who experienced it. The guided tour will walk you through a concentration camp, board the ‘St. Louis’ ship and take a ride in a cattle car. Also, guests have the option to crawl through a replica of an actual hiding place where 13 people hid during World War II for nine months. Upon arrival, groups view a 30-minute, introductory film, The Ipson Saga. The film describes Holocaust events and introduces the Ipson family narrative. The Virginia Holocaust Museum views its primary mission as educating the world-wide community about the historical and personal realities of the Holocaust. Lunch is at The Tobacco Company which was once an old abandoned tobacco warehouse. The four-story building was renovated to embody the spirit of Southern hospitality and charm and is considered by most to be the cornerstone of the Historic Shockoe Slip district. A special highlight of the day is a guided tour of St. John’s Church, the oldest remaining wooden church in Virginia. The surrounding cemetery includes the graves of George Wythe, two Governors and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, mother of Edgar Allan Poe. Endless Benefits Of Therapeutic Recreation
By Brittany Figdore, CTRS
For more information about programs for people with disabilities, call 772-7529, ext. 2
I
t’s a Friday evening in the Roanoke Valley, what are your plans? For some it may be staying in with family or friends, for others it may be going out to dinner, the movies, or downtown. Think for a moment what your life might look like if you did not have reliable transportation, limited financial resources and had a disability. Does your Friday night look any different? Since the late 1970s, Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley (TRS) has been working to help Roanoke Valley residents 18 years old and over with developmental/cognitive disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, head Injuries, and visual impairments, to overcome these and other barriers, by using purposeful recreational programming. In every recreation program there is potential to educate, discover and grow. Many people who are not familiar with the concept of therapeutic recreation (TR) do not recognize how recreation helps enhance quality of life for these individuals. Many adults independently participate in sports, crafts, exercise classes, or some other activity as part of their daily routine. Through these outlets they gain new skills, develop friendships and community ties, as well as stay physically active; thus improving their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. TRS serves as a facilitator to participants that have the desire to be an active part of their community, learn new skills, and socialize with peers; who would not otherwise have the ability to do so independently. So, does your Friday night look any different if you have a disability? The answer is that it doesn’t have to. You could be attending a TRS program like Friday Nights Out, going to a Red Sox game, or having fun at a recreation center! TRS offers a variety of programs to suit everyone’s interests, needs, and schedules, as well as provides transportation services for those who cannot provide their own. Favorite programs include everything from bowling and water aerobics, to arts classes, cooking classes and overnight trips to exciting regional attractions. According to TRS parent Nancy Kilcullen: “Therapeutic Recreation has made a huge difference in my son’s life. The multiple programs offered have provided a sense of belonging that would have been impossible to achieve anywhere else. He looks forward to every experience knowing he will be with a group of friends. The affordability of programs and availability of transportation also make participation easier. Every TR program is supervised by knowledgeable, caring, staff who work to promote every participants’ full potential. It is one of the best programs our family has ever had the privilege to be a part of in this state or any other.” The City of Roanoke is a valued partner in providing Therapeutic Recreation Services to individuals with disabilities in the valley.
Below are just a few of the programs in our Fall lineup.

Our 9th annual event will be held September 24-25 at Green Hill Park
Medieval Faire Submitted by Wendi Schultz
Where Your Family is Royalty
F
ramed by the forested Green Hills the field is strewn with tents both brilliant white and vibrant hues. The aromas of roasting foods rise through the air along with the sounds of laughter and music that abound upon the field. Brave knights strive to earn ladies’ hearts by deeds of arms and with the shiny treasures found on Merchants Row. Games to entrance and enthrall the young and the young at heart are here by the Stage where musicians and performers entertain the onlooking crowd. Join us for a day filled with mirth and an evening filled with magic at the Masquerade Ball. Dress in your finest garb as you walk with nobles, ladies and knights about the grounds beginning Saturday morning at 10 am and ending with the final dance of the ball that evening. Return Sunday morning and join in the Grand Parade at 12 noon, then feast and make merry until the Faire’s conclusion at 5pm. Meet King Blackwolf and Queen Dagrny on Progress as they travel to the Green Hills of Scotland. While there, marvel at the strength, courage and determination of the Highland Games Competitors on Saturday. Echoing from the hills will be the soulful drone of the Scottish bagpipes accompanied by the thunderous beat of the drum. There in the distance Scottish equestrian performers thrill and delight the spectators gathered about the tiltyard. Nearby can be heard the clash of steel upon steel where the Roanoke Sword Guild demonstrate their skill and swiftness with Scottish Broadsword and Claymore. You too can be treated like royalty at the great variety of shops and merchants to be found about the Faire. Delicious foods, valu-

able treasures, and wares of wonder abound from faraway lands. Have you ever dreamed of being a knight in shining armor, join King Blackwolf and Queen Dagrny for the Knighting ceremony where young and old, man and woman, boy and girl may kneel before the gleaming sword Excalibur and be made a knight of the Realm. While at the Knighting Ceremony learn about a knight’s armor, how it was worn, what it was made of and how it was used. Later join the King and Queen at the Royal Archery Tournament where you too can show your skill at the archery range. While there learn the history of the longbow and the types of arrows used in Medieval warfare. Conclude your Saturday at Faire at the Masquerade Ball. Learning dances both stately filled with grace and beauty as well as vigorous so as to take your breath away. Such shall be the merriment that may be found at the Green Hill Medieval Faire and Highland Games. Admission is $5 at the gate and children under 5 shall be free.
