Dear friends and neighbors,

R

ecreation with your family can offer some of life’s most REWARDING moments. Whether it’s a family vacation or a walk together on the greenway, these experiences create memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re reading this magazine, you’re probably hoping to find ways to “Explore Recreation” here in your own backyard. This spring we’ve expanded our lineup of outdoor activities to include such diverse activities as stand-up paddleboarding, caving, kayaking and horseback riding. For the kids, the special insert at the back of this publication features over 175 weeks of summer camps. Also new this season, we’ve created a digital punch system to reward folks for participating in Roanoke County’s recreation activities. We hope this will encourage your family to stay active and try a few new things. Get out there and make some more rewarding memories! Sincerely,

So Green Ridge is buying up the excess and we are going to use them to hold a post-Easter Easter egg hunt in our pool. We are going to sink eggs all around the pool and open it up for hunting. Bring your egg to a staff member to trade for candy. What a great family event to finish up spring break! Deadline to register is April 7, 2015. AGES

T’ai Chi

Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Six week program. QuickStart Tennis is a new format to help children seven and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately - even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: $39 and includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned. AGES

Paddleboarding S

tand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). It’s the fastest growing water sport in the country! That’s probably because of the affordability and versatility of this exciting new type of water craft. Great for moving or still water, stand up paddleboards are simple to learn and inflatable for easy transportation. The Roanoke Valley is the perfect environment for SUP adventures, with our growing list of outdoor amenities and wide variety of streams, creeks, rivers and lakes. James Revercomb is the co-founder of Roanoke Mountain Adventures, an outdoor recreation based business opening this spring. He says SUP is not only to see the surroundings but to get some exercise as well. “I like it because you can do it anywhere. It’s easy to get out on the water. You can go out for a leisure cruise. They make attachments for fishing. It’s a relatively easy sport for beginners, regardless of how athletic you are. It’s a great one to start with because of the ease of getting up for first timers.” James grew up in the Roanoke Valley, but spent the past eight years leading outdoor trips in Wyoming, such as whitewater rafting, fly fishing, snowmobiling and wildlife expeditions. Since returning to the area James has been impressed with the changes he sees here.

“A lot has changed here; everything from the rebranding and Roanoke Outside, to what they’ve done marketing Roanoke as an outdoor town, promoting our natural resources. It has attracted business and young people as they see the advantage of not just career but quality of life. When I was growing up here nobody lived downtown. I came back to see the amount of urban living and a vibrant greenway and much more focus on the trail network. The amount of public land with close proximity to the population center is truly amazing.” As a stand up paddleboarding instructor, James begins each class by familiarizing people with the equipment and basics. Starting with how to inflate the board, students quickly learn how to put the board in the water and finding the sweet spot to stand on it. From there it’s right into paddling. “Unlike surfing, it’s rare if there is someone not up paddling on their first time within two minutes,” says Revercomb. “I teach students to loosen up and use more than just their arms. On the board you want to bend your knees and use your full body and upper torso. The section of the Roanoke River near Explore Park is a great stretch to learn because you can fall off your board with little consequence other than getting wet. You don’t have much current to impede you from coming upstream.”

Standup Paddleboards are a great way to explore the outdoors or work your upper body muscles!

24

RoanokeCountyParks.com • (540) 772-PLAY (7-5-2-9)

Most participants in our SUP class learn how to balance on the board within minutes. Classes are held at Explore Park. See next page for details.

Once you understand SUP basics, the recreation opportunities are almost limitless. Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy the sport: • River Paddling – SUP boards can travel through many small waterways too narrow or shallow for a standard canoe or kayak. The Roanoke region is blessed with an abundance of streams and rivers with easy public access. • Fishing - You can now find numerous rod attachments and even back rests for your board. Additionally, paddleboards make for stealthy vessels to outwit your aquatic adversary. • Exercise - Paddleboarding is a great workout for your upper body and core. Work against the current for an even greater workout, or improve your balance through yoga on still water. • Ecological Tours – Explore the cost of Smith Mountain Lake in a new way, or get up close and personal with the coastal marshes of Virginia Beach. • Overnight Trips – Since paddleboards are easily transportable, many owners find them convenient for quick overnight trips in the great outdoors. You can even find attachments to carry your gear.

Before you invest in a new stand up paddleboard of your own, try it out by participating in a new program from Roanoke County led by the pros at Roanoke Mountain Adventures. Classes are designed for beginners with no previous experience. Instructor James Revercomb prides himself on getting people out of their comfort zones into a totally unique experience. “As a guide, one of the best parts of my job was seeing the sense of joy people got from outdoor recreation and the new places they were going and the experience you helped provide for them. I’ve never known something that could give so much and ask of so little as recreation in the great outdoors, and stand up paddleboards are a great way to see it. It’s a platform for a lifetime of enjoyment.”

Berry Hill Plantation

Located in the town of South Boston is one of the area’s oldest hidden treasures. This stately Greek revival mansion, steeped in history, is more than two centuries old. The beautiful main house has been carefully restored to its original grandeur and is listed on the National Historic Landmark register. As you travel up the tree lined drive, you’d almost expect Scarlett O’Hara to slip through the massive columns and glide down the stairs to meet you. Berry Hill was originally part of a land grant from the English crown to William Byrd in 1728. Byrd sold the estate and it has changed hands many times through the years. Some of the more notable owners include Benjamin Harrison and General Edward Carrington, a Revolutionary War hero. It was also the seat of one of one of the most successful tobacco plantations in the region. The estate itself has 17 rooms and a great entrance way which is flanked with an impressive cantilever double staircase. The massive mahogany staircase has intrigued engineers for many decades as it seems to float to the second floor with no visible support. Your guided tour is by a local historian who will amaze you with remarkable facts and stories that cannot be found in any history book. In the afternoon, we travel to Chatham for a tour of Chatham Hall, an all girls college prep school. The highlight is Saint Mary’s Chapel and its beautiful stained glass windows. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, bus, lunch at Berry Hill and tour escort. AGES

Wythe County is the home of three of the most beautiful mansions in Southwest Virginia. Pool Rules

Seven Simple Steps That Can Save a Life

By Stephanie Specht of

D

rowning is one of the leading causes of injury related death among children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old. Every year, about 490 children under the age of 4 drown in pools and spas and thousands more are hospitalized. However, according to Jill Lucas-Drakeford, a Carilion Clinic community health educator and the coordinator for Safe Kids Southwest Virginia, these deaths can be prevented if you practice pool safety. Take a look at these seven steps for a safer swim. Step 1: Supervision Anytime your child is around a pool, spa, or any source of water, close supervision is your best protection against drowning. Always stay within arm’s reach of your child, and no matter what kind of pool, lifeguards or not, a designated adult must watch the kids. If you are at the pool with a group of adults, Lucas-Drakeford suggested sharing the responsibility and taking turns being the water watcher. A water watcher is a designated adult whose singular focus is supervising the children when they are in the water. When you are the water watcher, do the following: • Move your chair near the edge of the pool. • Do a regular head count. • Step in if there is too much horsing around. • Do not make phone calls, respond to texts, or chat with friends during your time as the water watcher. Step 2: Learn CPR Not all pools have a lifeguard on duty so it essential that you know CPR. It could save your child’s life. In addition, even if emergency medical services (EMS) are on the way, Lucas-Drakeford explained that starting CPR on a child before EMS arrives greatly increases the chance of recovery. Get certified at your local Red Cross chapter and be sure to take a refresher course every year. In conjunction with knowing CPR, always have a phone nearby and know how to use the pool rescue equipment. Step 3: Swimming Lessons Knowing how to swim does not prevent drowning, but enrolling your child in formal swim lessons will greatly decrease their risk. And if you cannot swim, sign yourself up as well. “Drownings and close calls are eight times more likely to happen to kids,” Lucas-Drakeford said. “And this is also true when a child is being supervised by an adult who can’t swim.” To find out if your child is ready for swim lessons, talk to your pediatrician or health care provider. Lessons are usually offered at local community pools. Make sure the lessons include water safety skills that are appropriate for your child.

Step 4: Pool and Spa Covers Deterrents such as covers are essential to keep children out of the pool when you are not around. Make sure they are properly installed and keep them in good working order all year long. “Install a cover that has been tested to meet industry safety standards and is strong enough to hold a child or children,” LucasDrakeford noted. “But, make sure you also teach your child to stay away from all pool covers.” If you have a spa, always keep it covered and locked. And inflatable pools are no exception. Their flexible and low sides make it easy for children to climb into them. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 12 children under age 10 die in inflatable pools each year. And don’t forget about ladders on above ground pools; remove them when the pool is not in use. Step 5: Safety Drain Covers State law requires that all public pools and spas have compliant drain covers that prevent suction entrapments. If you have a private pool, check to make sure you have the latest safety drain covers installed as well. Safety drain covers prevent swimsuit straps, jewelry, and hair from getting entangled and are shaped to prevent suction from trapping a person. “Even though safety drain covers are designed to prevent entanglement or entrapment, teach your child to stay away from drains, as well as other pool equipment such as skimmers, pipe and vacuum lines, or any equipment that could pose a danger,” LucasDrakeford said. Step 6: Fencing A pool fence is an absolute necessity for pool safety. When installed and used correctly, pool fences not only keep your child out of the pool area, but any neighborhood children as well. The fence should enclose the entire pool and meet the following guidelines: • Self-closing and self-latching gates • A latch release knob that cannot be reached by children • At least four feet high, ideally five feet • Impossible to climb “If your house serves as the fourth wall of a fence, install door alarms on any entrances leading to the pool area and install an alarm in the pool itself,” Lucas-Drakeford added.

Step 7: Alarms Alarms add another barrier of protection in and around the pool and can alert you to an emergency before it is too late. “A child can slip into a pool without a sound or a splash, and in less than two minutes underwater, can lose consciousness,” Lucas-Drakeford explained. Alarms should be installed on any doors, windows, or gates leading out to the pool area, and surface wave or under water alarms should be placed in the pool. There are even alarms that your child can wear. By following all seven pool safety tips, you will ensure that the entire family has a fun and safe summer. For more information on pool safety, visit Safekids.org.

hen Green Ridge aquatics staff sat down last year to brainstorm a glow night at the indoor pool, they were hoping for a good crowd. They were shocked when visitors lined up out the door to take part in the festivities. An at-capacity attendance of nearly 250 showed up to see the pool decked out in a neon glow with the lights turned low. The event was so popular that staff members say it was an easy decision to bring back the program this February.

“Last year was an experiment, but I think so many people came because it was a good value,” says aquatic program coordinator Paige Hickey. “We had fun games, and it was a fantastic way to get people out of the winter doldrums and into the water.” New this year, they’re adding more games for preschool aged kids, as well as additional glow night décor, including the use of glow in the dark paint. Private Lessons

Adult Learn to Swim Month! According to the Centers for Disease Control, 37 percent of American adults can’t swim the length of a pool. This puts them at risk for being one of the ten people who drown every day in the US. Green Ridge Recreation Center’s Aquatic Department would like to change that statistic for the Roanoke Valley. In order to do this we will give every adult (18+) who signs up for our group lessons in April $10 off the registration fee. This is for our course #s 27568 and 27572. This is the best time to learn to swim!

Get the personal attention that you need at a time that’s convenient for your schedule. Ask about private lessons at Green Ridge!

Groups of One to Three

A certified swim instructor will develop a program that meets the goals and swim lesson needs of each individual. Days and times are flexible to accommodate your schedule. Semi-private lessons are for two-to-three individuals at once. Please form groups of similar ages and/or ability levels.

Have you heard the rumor about the Easter Bunny this year? He has produced way too many Easter eggs and way too much Easter candy. So Green Ridge is buying up the excess and we are going to use them to hold a post-Easter Easter egg hunt in our pool. We are going to sink eggs all around the pool and open it up for hunting. Bring your egg to a staff member to trade for candy. What a great family event to finish up spring break! Deadline to register is April 7, 2015 AGES

The Magic Happens Here! Roanoke County offers the area’s largest selection of summer camp programs. See pages 51-60 to see our offerings!

I

magine a place where kids immerse themselves in a world free from typical societal pressures—a place where the cares of the world melt away amidst immense personal growth. Sound like magic? Well, summer camp is magical.

example, we consistently affirm our approach to environmental stewardship through our meal service, the residential living component, arts and crafts projects and hands-on outdoor experiences.”

This is no exaggeration. A landmark study1 by the American Camp Association that surveyed 80 camps and 5000 families reports that camps are not just entertainment. Regardless of the type of camp— overnight or day, for preschoolers or teens, athletic, outdoors, or artistic—camps and the hands-on experiences therein bolster lasting learning, building self-esteem, and strengthening social skills. Kids who attend camp are benefiting from developing real-world skills.

Brain research supports this idea that camp provides a uniquely magical place where kids can explore problem-based scenarios and confront real-world mysteries. Then, they link these new experiences back to previously stored information. Boom! The learning sticks.2

The inherently active and interactive environment of camp allows for the kind of learning that sticks. Have you ever said that you learn better by doing? Well, that is exactly what camp is—a lot of doing. Whether a camper is learning about physics and trajectories by trying archery or kicking a soccer ball—the real-world connections make the learning come alive. As Jim Basham, Recreation Program Supervisor at Green Ridge Recreation Center, points out about their Lego camps, “Future engineers may come out of the camp – they feel like they’re just playing with Legos, but who knows what that will spark. We build a curriculum with outcomes.” The magic takes place in the doing. Greg Martin, Camp Director at Camp Roanoke, knows well that folding camp experiences into one another extends learning in such a way that the lessons are carried forward even after the kids go home. “At Camp Roanoke each component of the program complements and enforces overall camp themes. For

Explore Park’s new Nature Quest camps consciously put this practice into place via all-day interaction with the real thing. Inspired by college-level field experience classes, campers explore their natural world in order to piece together its intricate puzzle. As with all Roanoke County camps, the emmersive setting allows kids to take the learning even further so that they are analyzing their experiences, modifying what they have done, making predictions based on their experiences and then immediately applying new knowledge.

Out of all of this learning comes a new way for campers to see themselves. As they take healthy risks in a safe environment, they recognize capabilities they didn’t previously realize they had. Athletics Supervisor Allen Hayes likes to encourage his campers to focus on “something that they have a desire to improve in themselves.” The athletic camps’ focus on skill building with lots of personal attention from camp staff and counselors gives kids that opportunity to improve a skill in a supportive environment. Jim Basham points out that the “camp setting is a great way to ignite that.” Kids then take that new-found confidence and apply it beyond camp. Self-esteem grows in a number of ways. As Greg Martin explains, “sometimes things happen in steps or increments. As the kids do things that they normally would not do, they realize that they have and are developing capabilities. ” This real opportunity for success naturally builds self-esteem. Empty praise cannot do that, but allowing children to grow through experiences can. Camp is uniquely situated to do that. Whether it’s because they are learning to keep their own bunk area clean or navigating a formerly intimidating portion of the high ropes course, those real opportunities present themselves constantly. “ The whole time these successes are piling up, campers are learning to come together as a community thanks to well-trained and experienced camp staff. Campers find that inclusion and support have real pay-offs as together teams of friends achieve more.

Regular, positive interactions with peers in this esteem-building setting help campers to ease into social situations with less trepidation. In fact, research indicates that kids who attend camp show improvement in interpersonal skills like cooperation, trust, and communication.3 “It probably helps that they are coming together for a common goal,” as Allen Hayes points out. Marcia Dougherty, Recreation Program Manager for the Craig Center and Youth Services, is keenly aware that “through socialization with others, through play, our children learn how to navigate their world of people. Play is one of the big socialization tools that we have.” She has witnessed some of our youngest campers grow from wallflower to kids who move well in a group. Caring and experienced counselors, dynamic programming, and an environment that puts everyone at ease helps to make this possible. Greg Martin points out that “perhaps the magic of camp is that everyone is that growth is occurring for campers and staff alike, as they build a community they directly co-exist with. Regardless of campers’ backgrounds, they are a mix of kids coming together into a new place.” With so many options, every child has opportunities to fit into this mix and experience the magic of camp.
