Potters Guild

By Gail Tansill Lambert

H

Spotlight on Nan

er lovely home is a grand setting for works of art, some of which were perhaps created in her basement – studio, that is, because Nan Fooks (pronounced “folks”) is a potter blessed with artistic imagination and strong, graceful hands. With a background of forty-one years teaching English, Latin, creative writing and library science, mainly at William Byrd Middle and Hidden Valley Intermediate schools, she expanded her interests by taking pottery lessons at the Brambleton Center when she retired. “That’s the place to start,” she said, looking forward to her fifth year of classes in the fall, explaining that pottery classes provide all the tools necessary to create original works of clay, and in fact, the Brambleton Center is the largest public pottery studio in the Roanoke area. Inspired by her noted teacher Martha Legg, Fooks revels in the opportunities for artistic expression in the creation of pottery. “I find peace, a kind of spiritual peace when I’m working with clay.” The images of boats from her childhood in Newport News are transformed into exquisite pots and boxes in a variety of glazes and shapes depending on what technique she chooses to use. She showed me a tree trunk pot, its surface worked to create the look of lichen inspired by hikes at Peaks of Otter. The pot was fired with a soft green glaze named Sea Mist and the armature used to create the initial shape was a cylindrical oatmeal box. Repeated images of trees and vines give texture to her pot surfaces and bring to mind the potter’s home in the Virginia mountains. Fooks is an active member of the Blue Ridge Potters Guild, which has partnered with the Brambleton Center to place pottery at the front and center row of arts in the Roanoke area. Together, the two groups invite world-class master potters to the Brambleton Center for workshops, demos, and shows; both are heavily committed to educational outreach including pottery instruction in schools as well as Guild scholarships for adult pottery workshops. Fooks says, “Many members of the Guild have their own pottery studios, but even those potters use the Brambleton Center for its equipment and space as well as the artistic stimulation that comes from sharing ideas and experiences with other potters.” The Blue Ridge Pottery Guild, based at the Brambleton Center, includes potters from Lynchburg, Bedford, Smith Mountain Lake, Franklin County, Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Floyd. Fooks is membership chairman of the pottery guild and puts the present membership total at eighty-nine, adding that Guild members basically “teach each other and others,” effectively widening the circle of working potters as well as appreciative collectors. Meet the potters and see their work will be at the upcoming October 8, 9, & 10 Blue Ridge Potters Guild Show and Sale at Patrick Henry High School. Admission is free.

Oil Painting by the Bob Ross Method

Adult

Arts

Basic Principles of Direct Painting

This class is directed to intermediate painters although it is open to all skill levels. The objective is to equip you with the skills necessary to paint any subject on your own. Composition, drawing, and edges will be addressed along with the principles of light, shadow and value but the main focus will be on color - how to see it and mix it. You will paint a color chart and by the end of the course will be painting a simple still life. Five week program. Instructor: Ed Gowen.

With the Bob Ross method of Oil Painting, you will complete each painting in just one class. Even people who have never painted before can do this although more experienced people will also enjoy the classes. Each painting is done on a 16x20 inch canvas using Bob Ross supplies. The picture for September is Rocky Sea; the picture for October is Pure Elegance; the picture for November is Golden Sunset; and the picture for December is Silent Night. The paintings are on display at the Brambleton Center. All supplies are included in the fee. Instructor: Judy Moore-Gist. Ages

Cooking

By Bhawana Scaer

C

A Hobby of Endless Possibilities

ooking - a hobby with endless possibilities, endless styles and known and unknown origins. Some find it therapeutic, some relaxing, some entertaining, some educational and some merely fun. Even those who don’t partake in the actual process of cooking certainly enjoy the end results. Needless to say that cooking has something for everyone. Cooking is a skill that has little or no age restrictions. There are some things you would not want a child to do; like use the stove or oven, but today there so many dishes that can be prepared in the microwave that even a child can make something delicious for him or herself. It is always exciting and effortless to go out to eat, however there is a sense of fulfillment when one prepares a meal at home. Cooking takes different forms according to season, nation, taste and availability of resources. With fall approaching we all look for comfort foods, which we can enjoy in the warmth of our homes. A variety of cooking classes are offered that are designed keeping all these diversities in mind. Being an Indian cook myself I am partial towards Indian dishes. We have some very nice Indian restaurants in town and I am sure a lot of people have acquired a liking to Indian food. A very simple dish that you can try is- Chana Masala . Most of the ingredients are available at the local grocery stores. Here is the recipe for itIngredients: ½ cup vegetable oil,4 cups chickpeas (Soaked overnight or from a can),1 cup chopped sweet onions,½ tsp. cumin seeds,2 tsp. Garam Masala,1 tsp. Cayenne pepper powder,1 tbsp. Garlic paste,1 tbsp. Ginger paste,2 tsp. Mango (Amchoor) powder,½ tsp. Turmeric powder,1 tsp. ground black pepper,1 cup water, 2 cups Black Tea (Bring 2 cups of water to boil, put 3 tea bags or 4 tsp. of loose tea and let steep for 10 minutes) and ¼ cup fresh cilantro (chopped) In a deep pot heat the oil. Put the onions and cumin seed and sauté till the onions turn golden brown. Add the ginger and garlic paste and sauté for a few more minutes. Mix all the remaining spices into the water and add to the onions. Then add the chickpeas and tea, mix well, cover and simmer for 30

12

minutes. After 30 minutes are over uncover and cook off the extra water. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve. Serves 6 to 8 people. Often the mere mention of cooking, brings about stress of the unknown. I would like to assure you that it really is an enriching experience. Trying out new foods and recipes makes the world seem extremely small and accessible. The aromas of the ingredients and the uniqueness of the cultures and the variety of tastes give an experience that goes a long way. So, everyone out there, whether you have tried it before or not give cooking a chance!

The Water’s Great!

By Gail Tansill Lambert

Aquatics

W

18

ater sports continue to grow in popularity: river tubing, ocean kayaking, sailing, water skiing and scuba diving. But, like the TV pitchman says, “Don’t try this at home!” Unless you can swim two or three laps without holding onto something, water sports are seriously risky. Swimming is the key to enjoying water sports responsibly and it’s never too early or too late to learn. Aquatic centers generally begin swimming lessons for tiny tots starting at ages 0 to 5. This very early education is intended to start the child off on a path that leads to a lifetime of enjoyment and safety in the water, be it a pool, river, lake or ocean. At the next level, swimming instructors teach elementary school age children the different racing strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. At this age many children join swim teams and experience the fun of belonging to a team and striving to swim faster and better. Older kids can even dream of college swimming scholarships and Olympic competition. Adult lessons include relaxation activities, confidence building and skill improvement. Adult swim lessons can be life-changing. At some point swimming becomes an individual’s way to counter stress, burn calories, and improve cardiovascular fitness according to fitness trainers and the medical profession. A back surgeon in Atlanta recommends lap training before surgery to improve surgical outcomes. Arthritis patients are advised to exercise painful joints in the swimming pool to gain flexibility, and everybody benefits from improved muscular strength and endurance. Swimmers have a long history. Egyptian clay seals show people swimming as far back as 4000 B.C. Classics professors will say that the ancient Greeks defeated the invading Persians in the fifth century B.C. Naval Battle of Salamis because Greek sailors on a stricken ship could swim away and fight again. There was no such second chance for the non-swimming Persians, a lesson not lost on the U.S. Naval Academy where midshipmen are required to demonstrate the ability to jump into the water from the height of a battleship and swim to a safe distance at a prescribed fast clip. More in line with the size and offerings of today’s aquatic centers, the ancient Romans built numerous and gigantic public baths that served as community centers for any Roman able to pay a very low fee. Typically, afternoons were spent at the baths where men, women and children enjoyed swimming, fitness facilities and cultural diversions such as art galleries and libraries. There were cold pools as well as heated pools and Romans built baths in conquered territories all across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East in order to enjoy some of the comforts of home away from Rome.

Back to the present. We are fast developing an affinity for aquatic centers that perfectly suit our postmodern quest for healthful recreation, medical recuperative strategies, and a community center that welcomes the kid having fun as well as the future Michael Phelps and the adult at last conquering her fear of diving under water with eyes wide open. Jump in! The water’s great!

Staying Fit By Sandra Kelly

E

Moderate Intensity: • Walking briskly (3 miles per hour or faster, not race-walking) • Water aerobics • Bicycling slower than 10 miles per hour • Tennis (doubles) • Ballroom dancing • General gardening Vigorous Intensity • Racewalking, jogging, or running • Swimming laps • Tennis (singles) • Aerobic dancing • Bicycling 10 miles per hour or faster • Jumping rope • Heavy gardening (continuous digging or hoeing) • Hiking uphill or with a heavy backpack

Know Your Options: Low-impact aerobic classes will get the body toned and stronger and keep it there. If you must have more action, it can be found in high-impact workouts. Even if you must start exercising by sitting, you will be surprised how active the movements in Body Recall can be and how surprised you will be at your expanded ability to reach for items in the kitchen cabinet or hold your own on a sight-seeing trip. Fortunately, there are many routes to a fit and toned body, from Jazzercise to the Latin beat of Zumba. Yoga, T’ai Chi and Pilates classes come in all levels, and all build flexibility and strength while providing tremendous stress relief for both body and mind. Some people like to put it all together with NIA, which stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Action and combines the gentler martial arts movements of T’ai Chi and Yoga with modern dance. The NIA program comes highly recommended as a safe cardiovascular workout that works for all ages and doesn’t stress joints. Many Ways to Get Going: Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans gives these examples to get 150 minutes to 300 minutes of activity a week with moderate-intensity activity: • Walk briskly for 30 minutes on 5 days; exercise with resistance bands on 2 days; • Walk briskly for 30 minutes on 2 days, 60 minutes of social dancing on one evening, 30 minutes of mowing the lawn on one afternoon, heavy gardening (muscle strengthening) on 2 days; • Thirty minutes of biking on 3 days, playing softball for 60 minutes on one day, using weightmachines to strengthen muscles on 2 days.

Wellness

xercise for bone health! Exercise to beat stress! Exercise to fight disease or boredom. Exercise to stay fit for life! In other words, exercise at a level that suits your body needs to be on your To Do List at least three times a week. Start by Assessing Your Needs: To plan a program, consider your age, fitness level and what you enjoy. Then check out what the experts recommend to create a plan. First, build (or practice) those skills that keep you fit for life – flexibility and balance, strength and stamina. Then, get as fancy as you wish or your body will allow. To increase or maintain body strength, do a set of exercises for all the major muscle groups, giving each group 8 to 12 reps per set. For stamina, get the heart rate up for at least two and a half hours a week with moderate aerobic exercise, or one hour and 15 minutes a week for vigorous exercise. How can you tell which is which? If you can talk and work out, it’s moderate exercise; if you need to stay quiet and devote all energy to the exercise, it is vigorous! Here are examples of intensity of exercises from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans:

Introduce your child to karate without spending a fortune. Emphasis will be on proper attitude, respect and self confidence. This healthy activity teaches your child readiness, focus and will increase their attention span and coordination. Even though the student will learn escapes there will be NO Sparring or contact fighting allowed in this class. The instructor, Tom Ramsey is a 4th degree Black Belt in the Wado-Ki style of Karate with 30 years of teaching experience.

Jujitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting, relies on balance, timing, finesse and flexibility rather than size or strength. It is an Olympic sport, designed to develop self-confidence while teaching skills that are transferable to all other sports. In the class, you will be introduced to both systems and gain ample knowledge of the sport. Jujitsu/Judo GI (uniform) is required after the first class. Class at 7:50 is for advanced participants. T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. Another important aspect is improving circulation and stimulating blood flow to the organs. Six week program. Instructor: Denis Spencer.

Be Young and Be Happy!

Athletics

By Michael L. Ramsey

28

“Be Young, Be Foolish, but Be Happy.” In 1968, The Tams introduced a song that would become a theme song of sorts for generations of active young people. Youth sports programs give young people and their parents venues where they can be active in their pursuit of happiness. One family, now living in the Oak Grove-Sugar Loaf section of Roanoke County, raised three boys active in youth sports activities. One played high school tennis and rec league basketball; one was in Special Olympics; and the oldest played football, baseball, tennis, golf, lacrosse and soccer. I thought my wife was superwoman for managing all those activities until I met Ann Bolinger. Ann and husband, Brian, an internist, have five sons, all of whom are active in youth sports activities; so are Ann and Brian. Ann is the force behind “Team Bolinger.” All the boys have played Little League baseball, and dad has coached for several years. “We’ve had three, sometimes four, boys playing basketball; two played hockey; and all five have played soccer,” says Ann. Until now, none has played football. Ann has served for many years as a member of the board of Little League baseball and encourages parent participation to help build a stronger program. “We are always looking for people to become involved. The people are very good in these rec programs,” says Ann. One person who agrees with that assessment is James Muscaro, who retired after 35 years as football and basketball coach at North Cross School. “I also coached baseball and golf at times,” he says. “My three children came up through the youth sports programs,” says Muscaro. Coach Muscaro has seen the benefits from both sides. “Youth sports around the Valley are very strong,” says the coach, “and made the transition to high school sports much easier for many student athletes.” One of those athletes who agrees with Coach Muscaro is former VMI star basketball player Damon Williams. While playing at VMI in the 1980’s, Damon and twin brother, Ramon, were known as the “twin towers.” “From a personal perspective, being a twin had its advantages,” says Williams, “we always had someone to compete with.” In addition to Ramon, Damon had other brothers, and the boys’ father was the football coach at Shawsville High School, so learning sports skills was a natural part of family life. But rec league sports added another dimension. “Youth sports programs taught us how to get along with others,” says Williams, “It taught us the value of team work and

developed our competitive nature.” The youth rec programs had an impact on the Williams twins, and that was the impetus for them to offer their own basketball camps during summers in Roanoke. “It gives us a chance to teach these young people how to win and how to lose,” says Williams, “they learn discipline, how to follow directions, how to be part of a team effort, and how to execute plays.” “Being successful in athletics helps build character and integrity.” Says Williams, “and it begins at a young age with organized sports.” Register Online: it’s fast, easy and secure!

Backpacking

Planning a Family Adventure Don’t forget your camera! Backpacking can be a fun adventure for the entire family, if you’re prepared.

Outdoors

By Ben Calloway

A

fter summer’s hot, muggy, buggy days start to wane, the first sweep of cool air and clear skies invites the whole family to share a fall outdoor experience. For many youngsters, a first backpacking trip brings the enjoyment of all nature has to offer. Backpacking’s two biggest lessons are getting along with others while underway and gaining experience at being independent. Youngsters rise to the challenge to put the bare necessities into a backpack and head off into the woods for a few days. By age 10, most youngsters are ready to join their family for a memorable time in the outdoors. In fact, they are rarin’ to go! Choose to plan or choose a program: Backpacking is a traditional form of family fun with room for everyone, from kids to grandparents. For families with less time to spare, it’s a good idea to seek out a preplanned activity from a local program provider. This choice can save time and help make sure the outing is a successful, enjoyable event. Where to go: The Roanoke Valley has no shortage of great places to backpack, some of them only minutes away. There are thousands of acres of national forest, state parks with readymade hiking trails and campgrounds, and areas like Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, a nearly 12,000-acre conservation easement near Hollins University. This spot caters to family and kid-friendly activities. Immediate access to the nearby Appalachian Trail can provide trips of any desired length. Register online www.RoanokeCountyParks.com • Register by phone 540.772.PLAY

Equipment: What each backpacker carries in a backpack is what he or she has to work with when leaving the highway and entering the forest. For a day trip, very light travel is possible with emphasis on water, snacks, raingear and a first aid kit for bumps and scrapes. For overnight, the pack should include a sleeping bag, items to use to make a fire, a canteen, food and a sleeping shelter. Communications are sometimes necessary, even in the back country. A cellphone or two carried by adults provides a reassuring measure of safety and contact with the outside, but should be used for emergencies, or only sparingly. Remember, the reason for the venture is to get away from the daily world. Encourage individual participation: On a backpacking trip, everyone helps carry the necessary equipment. For a large group, the parts of a tent may be divided up so that each backpacker carries only stakes, ropes or other components like cooking pots or rain flys. Everyone should carry something, in the interest of a sense of participation. Lessons learned: For the youngest, the goal of the trip might be to have as much fun as possible. Older, more experienced members may be responsible for routefinding, setting up a tent, cooking, washing dishes or keeping the campsite garbage-free. Games and activities are especially important for kids but should be planned to include everyone. All these duties make it clear why it is sometimes best to take advantage of the services of a local backpacking program and its experienced instructors. However you do it, every trip into the outdoors is a wonderful memory. Get out there and enjoy it!

Via Ferrata

A via ferrata is a type of mountain climbing route which has a safety system permanently installed, making the climb suitable for persons without prior training and using minimal equipment. You are attached to a steel cable which runs along the entire route. Steel rungs, ladders, and bridges helps keep the physical difficulty within the ability of reasonably fit first-time climbers. Round trip, you will experience a two-mile hike/climb with an elevation gain of 900 feet and a subsequent elevation loss of 900 feet. At points you will experience over 200 feet of vertical exposure. You will be hiking/climbing on small ledges and stepping out over airy voids. For those who find the challenge to be more than anticipated, there are two escape routes in the first section of the Via. Fee includes breakfast biscuit and transportation. Ages

As you continue down the parkway, lookout for bears and stately elk and enjoy a stop at the turquoise glacier-fed Peyto Lake. Then comes the epic view of Moraine Lake and the aweinspiring Valley of the Ten Peaks. The jagged Ten Peaks are distinctively saw-toothed, standing out amidst stunning Alpine scenery. That night you settle in at the world-famous “Castle in the Rockies,” Fairmont’s Banff Springs Hotel, for a three night stay. It’s a luxurious place to relax and recharge. On day 6 Yoho National Park awaits. Named by the Cree (using their expression for “awe”), the park features Spiral Tunnels cut through the mountains during the railroads development. Next, enjoy a visit to Fields, a cozy town known for its charm, nestled in the grand Canadian Rockies. Later, travel along Kicking Horse River and enjoy a visit to the Natural Bridge to learn how this amazing limestone rock formation was created. Continue your journey along the river and explore spectacular Emerald Lake, named for the vibrant green color of its water. Then, enjoy a visit to the beautiful Takakkaw Falls, one of Canada’s highest waterfalls. The following day, set off for a scenic drive through Banff featuring the powerful Bow Falls and impressive Hoodoos – known as the “Land of the Sleeping Giants.” During an afternoon at leisure, perhaps you’ll take a stroll through Banff’s delightful downtown, stopping in some of its chic boutiques or cafes. Our wonderful journey is winding down as we leave the Canadian Rockies behind and cross the prairies of Alberta toward our final destination. Calgary, one of Canada’s most modern and exciting cities, is situated on the banks of the Bow River. Calgary attractions include the Tower, Glenbow Museum, Canada Olympic Park and the Eau Claire Market. The Rockies Highlights by Train tour packs an amazing amount into a single Canadian Rockies adventure. We hope you’ll join us on this adventure!

Travel

he Canadian Rockies are a fantastic travel destination. There’s no better way to experience them, than by train, in a 9 day tour offered by Roanoke County Parks next Spring. You’ll start your trip in Vancouver, host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, where you’ll be struck by its stunning location right on the coast. Begin with a tour of Stanley Park, where exotic totem poles recall lasting ties to this area’s earliest inhabitants, then it’s off to the largest Chinatown in North America and a vibrant waterfront area. Now it’s time to climb aboard VIA Rail’s “The Canadian”. While there are many beautiful mountain ranges in the world, none can compare to the Rockies in terms of huge majestic peaks, big skies and evergreen forests that seemingly go on forever. The wonderful thing about taking the “road less traveled” is the opportunity for a panoramic view of your surroundings. You’ll be glad that you didn’t miss the glaciers of the Albreda Icefields or the view of snow-covered summit of Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Upon arriving in Jasper, your adventure on land begins. First stop… a trip to the extraordinary Maligne Canyon, home to scenic Maligne Lake with its shimmering waters. And for over 70 years no trip to the Canadian Rockies has been complete without a cruise to Spirit Island on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. This optional cruise allows for a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the mountain ringed southern shores of Maligne Lake. Our journey continues to Banff, a city nestled in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains offering visitors a variety of galleries, shops and cafes to explore. En route we travel along the unforgettable Icefields Parkway. Waterfalls, rushing rivers, glacial peaks, imposing cliffs and snowcapped peaks paint the breathtaking canvas. You stop at the Athabasca Falls and marvel at its sheer beauty and power. At the Columbia Icefields, enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime ride across a mass of glacial ice over 1,000 feet thick – the largest accumulation of ice south of the Arctic Circle.

Highland Games

Part of the Medieval Faire

Mark Your Calendar to see these exciting events at the Green Hill Medieval Faire - Saturday, September 26

H

ighland Games have been a part of Scottish culture for centuries. Now, for the third consecutive year, these games are a part of the Medieval Faire at Green Hill Park. Visit anytime on Saturday, September 26 to witness amazing feats of human strength, and celebrate a unique cultural heritage. The events competed in can vary depending on which Games you are competing in. The thrower must compete in all events in a particular competition. Here’s a brief description of some of the events you’ll see! Open Stone Put : Open Stone Put similar to the shot put, except a stone is used that weighs usually between 16 and 22 pounds. It is called “open” style because any style of putting is allowed with the spin and glide styles being the most popular. The throwing area is a box 4’-6” wide and 7’-6” long. The thrower must keep one foot inside this area and not step over the back line or inside face of the “trig” (front of the throwing box) or the throw is a foul. Weight for Distance: The weight can be either block or spherical shaped with links and a handle. The overall length cannot exceed 18”. The weight is thrown with one hand in a throwing area 4’-6”x 9’. The thrower must keep one foot inside this area and not step over the back line or inside face of the trig or the throw is a foul. Separate competitions are held for 28 lbs. and 56 lbs.

46

Scottish Hammer Throw: The hammer has a lead or steel head with a bamboo or rattan handle affixed through a hole in the head. The overall length cannot exceed 50”. The athlete stands behind the trig with his back to the throwing area, winds the hammer around the head and releases over the shoulder. The athlete’s feet must remain in a fixed position until the hammer is released. Boots with blades attached to the front of them are usually worn to keep the feet on the ground and in a fixed position. Caber Toss: The Caber is a tree that has been cut and trimmed down so one end is slightly wider than the other. It can vary length from 16 to 22 feet and between 100 and 180 pounds. The smaller end is rounded off so it will be easy to cup in the thrower’s hands. The caber is stood up for the thrower with the large end up. The thrower hoists the caber up and cups the small end in his hands. He then takes a short run with the caber and then stops and pulls the caber so that the large end hits the ground and the small end flips over and faces away from the thrower. The caber is scored for accuracy as though the thrower is facing the 12:00 position on a clock face. A judge behind the thrower calls how close to the 12:00 position the small end of the caber lands, 12:00 being a perfect toss. If the caber is not turned, a side judge calls the degrees of the angle the caber makes with the ground. Sheaf Toss: The sheaf is a 16lb. or 20lb. burlap or plastic bag stuffed with either chopped rope, straw, or mulch. The sheaf is tossed over a cross bar with a pitch fork. Three attempts are allowed at each height. If the thrower misses all three tries at one height, the he is out of the competition. Weight for Height: The weight for height is the same as the 56 lb. weight used for distance except it is shorter. The weight is tossed over a cross bar with one hand. Three attempts are allowed at each height. If the thrower misses all three tries at one height, the he is out of the competition.

Medieval Faire at Green Hill Park

Experience the adventure, pageantry, magic and romance of medieval time for a full weekend in September. Knights, knaves, damsels, and magicians along with many other interesting characters transform Green Hill Park into a spectacular display of history. You can explore the village yourself as the past comes to life with historic figures, entertainment, eccentric characters, jousting, swordplay, music, handcrafted arts and crafts, vendors, merchants and hearty food and drink. Saturday only, enjoy a Highland Games competition, starting at 10am, and stay for the Masquerade Ball Saturday only at 5pm. Children under 5 receive FREE admission both days. Ages
