Dear friends and neighbors,

W

ith the addition of Explore Park to our parks system in recent months, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is poised to become “your DESTINATION for EXPLORATION.” We’re already home to destination facilities like Camp Roanoke and Splash Valley Water Park. Each one draws visitors from throughout the region for unique recreation experiences. Explore Park is well positioned on the Blue Ridge Parkway to become a centerpiece of our outdoor recreation program. Over the next few years, we will build on our success in providing affordable and memorable recreation experiences for both Roanoke County residents and visitors to our area. We hope you’ll get out and explore over nine miles of trails already open at Explore Park. As we expand the amenities and programs there, we’ll keep you informed about all of the exciting new opportunities for exploration! Sincerely,

Doug Blount is director of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

A majority of us have trouble sleeping when we are under stress, but there are also many types of sleep problems that might require medical attention. If you answer “yes” to two or more of these questions, you may want to talk to your physician about your sleep issues. A referral to a Carilion Clinic sleep center may help you stay healthy.

Wellness

• Has your partner noticed you stop breathing at night? • Do you snore? • When you snore, do you snore loudly and irregularly? • Do you feel sleepy during the day, even though you slept the previous night? • Do you find it difficult to go to sleep? • Is your bedtime inconsistent? • Do you often experience morning headaches? • Do you often feel exhausted or tired? • Do you get up frequently at night to urinate? • Do you have trouble concentrating? •Are you overweight or have you recently gained weight? • Do you have high blood pressure? For more information on the Carilion Clinic sleep centers visit carilionclinic.org/pulmonary/sleep-centers-virginia.

The Value of Sleep For Your Health & Wellbeing By Stephanie Specht, of

S

leep is a basic human need that is essential to your well being. However, many of us neglect this important aspect of our health and scrimp on getting enough shut eye. Benefits of Sleep According to Frank Biscardi, M.D., medical director of Carilion Clinic’s sleep centers, we don’t really know why we need to sleep, but we do know that not getting enough sleep can make just getting through the day extremely difficult. When you don’t get enough sleep, it can affect your memory, your problem-solving skills, your creativity, and make you irritable and unable to concentrate. If you are consistently not getting enough sleep, your body can go into what Dr. Biscardi calls sleep debt. “Sleep is like money and when you don’t have enough for your expenses, then you go into debt, and you have that added pressure on your body to fall asleep,” he explained. If you are in sleep debt, you might find yourself feeling drowsy when you are driving or unable to concentrate on complicated issues at work. A lack of sleep can also negatively affect your blood sugar levels and raise your blood pressure. The amount of sleep you need can vary, but most people need from six to eight hours of sleep per night to avoid going into debt.

Troubled Sleepers Many of us might have an occasional night when we toss and turn, but if you are persistently having trouble getting enough sleep, you might be a troubled sleeper. “If you are having problems functioning during the day, if you sleep a reasonable amount of time and wake up still tired, or you consistently have problems either going to sleep or staying asleep, that is a real sign that you have a problem,” said Dr. Biscardi.

Learn the basics of better sleep in a new program at Green Ridge!

Improving Your Sleep The key to improving your sleep is to maintain what Dr. Biscardi calls “sleep hygiene.” Try some of these tips to help improve your sleep: • Maintain a regular sleep schedule by getting up and going to bed at the same time • Limit time in bed to eight hours, unless you are ill, and don’t take naps during the day • Use your bedroom for sleeping only, and make sure it is quiet, cool, and dark • Avoid screen time before bed (the light from televisions, smart phones, and tablets can delay the beginning of your natural sleep cycle) • Avoid exercise within four hours of bedtime • Avoid eating (a light snack is OK) or drinking large amounts within three hours of bedtime, and don’t drink caffeine after noon • No alcohol or cigarettes within four to six hours of bedtime • Relax before bedtime and avoid doing work • If you can’t sleep, go to another room and engage in a quiet, relaxing, or boring activity

Top 10 Reasons For an Aquatic Workout!!!

Aquatic exercise instructor Susan Kraughto leads an enthusiastic group on the path to better health!

By Anne Sampson

I

-

Strength Training. See above.

- Relaxation. Your heart rate will actually be as much as 17 beats per minute slower in the water than while exercising at the same intensity on land. That’s not only good for your blood pressure, it’s good for your sense of well-being.

1

7

- This ain’t your Grandma’s water aerobics. The myth still prevails that aquatic exercise only benefits elderly adults. In reality, there are aquatic classes appropriate for all age groups that provide fun, challenging and beneficial exercise because…

2

- Aquatics strengthen your core. How many of us have heard about the importance of The Core? Core muscles include those in your abdomen, back, sides and upper legs. They support your spine and help give you balance.

3

- Aquatics can be as intense – or not – as you want. Water creates 12 times the resistance to movement that you will experience on land, in every direction, while making you feel 10% lighter. This means that you can exercise at any intensity, do nearly any exercise you can do on land, with less likelihood of injury or joint and muscle pain. And you will still get a…

4

- Powerful cardiovascular workout. That extra resistance you get in the water really gets your heart and lungs working, and will increase your cardiovascular strength.

18

5 6

f “aquatic exercise” makes you think of seniors in swim caps smiling from the pool as they perform aerobic exercises to 80s disco, think again. According to Chelsea Arner, Wellness Supervisor at Green Ridge Recreation Center, aquatic exercise encompasses intensities from low to high, can benefit people of all ages and fitness levels and it’s just darn fun. Herewith, Chelsea’s favorite reasons to enjoy aquatics:

Pain Relief. You don’t have to be a senior citizen to experience joint or muscle pain, whether it’s from an injury or from surgery. See Reasons 1-6 to understand how Aquatic Exercise can help relieve many kinds of pain, including that caused by rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.

8

- Bone Health. Weight bearing exercise has been shown to improve bone health for all ages, including post-menopausal women and people suffering from osteoarthritis. Water resistance provides weight-bearing exercise without the impact and strain of land-based activity.

9 10

- Weight Loss. Remember Reasons 2 and 3? With increased muscle tone and core strength, and greater oxygen use from an intense work-out, you will burn calories.

- You will have fun.

Let’s have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. Participants will learn beginning swimming strokes, breath holding, floating, and kicking all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson each week that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments.

This is your chance to push yourself and really enhance your swimming skills. To participate in this class you must be able to jump into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 15 yards with your face in the water and utilize a rhythmic breathing pattern. Focus at this level is on performing strokes efficiently to increase your endurance. Upon completion of this class participants will have been introduced to butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall.

Adaptive Swimming Lessons

Have a child with a disability who loves the water, but does not know how to swim? This is the perfect class! The lessons will include water safety, motor function, breathing and water acclimation in a fun, safe environment tailored to your child’s needs. Class size is limited to be sure all swimmers are able to stay engaged and get the most from each lesson. Questions about if this class is right for your child - please contact Kari Decker at 777-6357.

Glass & Laughs Tanya Leslie’s Unique Lessons By Scott Ramsburg

”I

t all comes down to the creativity of the group,” says instructor Tanya Leslie. “Everybody feeds off each other. They could sit do this at home on their own, or read a book or watch an online tutorial - but it’s easier to see it done hands on, and it always helps to work together.” Tanya Leslie has been working with stained glass for nearly twenty years, and teaching at the Brambleton Center for the past twelve. Why do students keep enrolling with her time and again? The veteran instructor combines laughter and a positive attitude with thorough instruction that’s hard to find anywhere else. “She shares all the knowledge she has, and she has a LOT,” says staff member and stained glass student Myra Sellers. “I’ve been to classes before where the instructors hold back, and although you complete a piece, you never really learn how to do it on your own. By the end of Tanya’s class I really felt like I knew what I was doing. “ In her beginner classes, students are guided through the process of glass cutting and frame construction. Their first piece is a set project that everyone in the group works on at the same time. Within the span of just seven weeks, they move on to create several additional pieces of their choice. Participants end at an intermediate level. Throughout the year Tanya offers project based courses for students with some stained glass knowledge. Students in these classes have a large amount of freedom in the design and construction of their works of art. While stained glass can be an expensive hobby, most students agree that there are advantages to learning how to do it on your own. A finished piece at a craft show can range anywhere from $50 to $200 per square foot depending on the materials and time it took to create the work. After completing a class with Tanya, students should be able to frame a work to any size, making it easy to customize for their own homes.

Stained glass instructor Tanya Leslie inspires students through her positive spirit.

“There’s also an advantage in working with a group, no matter what your skill level,” says Tanya. “You don’t need muscles, you don’t need artistic talent. You can bounce ideas off each other and you can laugh together!” Laughter is a hallmark of all of Tanya’s classes. Her students describe their instructor as quick witted, encouraging and uplifting. “She’s liquid sunshine... With just a dash of Tabasco,” recalls one participant. “She’s a free spirit, and can train you to perfection. You just have FUN in her class.” Who says learning something new can’t be fun!

Return to Explore Park

“We had a beautiful, white carriage with red velvet interior,” Debbie said. “I think it was brand new,” Pat added. They both fondly remembered their carriage was pulled by a gentle horse named Frank.

ust off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 115, Explore Park offers an idyllic setting for any wedding – large or small. The historic Mountain Union Church will once again be open to host ceremonies, while the nearby Taubman Center is available for receptions and other wedding-related events such as rehearsal dinners. Brides, imagine being transported through the forest in a white, horse-drawn carriage and arriving at the quaint, rustic church while your groom and a congregation of family and friends eagerly await your entrance. It’s simply one of the many romantic options for an Explore Park wedding. For Pat Harris Freeman and her niece, Debbie Pitts, the horsedrawn carriage was a reality, as was the church wedding. The two had a double ceremony in Mountain Union Church at Explore Park in June of 2005, when Pat married her husband, Alfred, and Debbie married her husband, Robert. Debbie served as executive director of Explore Park from 2003 to 2013.

As for Mountain Union Church, Pat said, “I always wanted to be married in a church. It was a pretty little church inside, and we could decorate it the way we wanted. My daughter put flowers up front and on all the pews.” The one room church, which seats up to 100 people, is one of the finest examples of circa 1880s Greek Revival architecture in the area. Mountain Union Church still showcases the original pews and altar appointments, carefully hand-constructed of beautiful black walnut. The tongue-and-groove yellow pine is the perfect complement to the chapel setting. The church also features a contemporary heating and air conditioning system, which makes it comfortable for all seasons Located in a beautiful hardwood forest, the church is surrounded by majestic oaks, maples, pine and evergreens. As Pat recalled, “We both (Debbie and I) loved it out there, and it was really special to me that I could share that setting with my niece.”

Debbie said “What I enjoyed most was the setting, it’s just so peaceful, which made it even more special.” After the church ceremony, the wedding parties and their guests attended their reception at The Taubman Center, just up the hill from the church. “After the horse and carriage brought us up the hill, then other people could take rides around the park while the reception was going on,” Pat said. Another personal touch for the event was her daughter and son-in-law made all the decorations. The Taubman Center complements the church as a reception location, either indoors or outdoors. The center offers a variety of spaces for rent. The Blue Ridge Room Banquet Facility accommodates up to 100 guests, the Chestnut Ridge Room holds up to 120 people, and the Green Ridge Room is available for more intimate occasions, with room for up to 25. Additional space for dressing areas is also accessible in the center. Wedding parties may personalize each setting according to their own tastes. Wendi Schultz, Special Events & Tourism Director for Roanoke County, said “everyone will be able to bring in whatever they want, whether it be carriages, caterers, florists, tents, and more. There are also options for reserving outdoor space, and the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center at Explore Park may be used for bridal showers or other wedding-related activities.”

Hold your Explore Park wedding outdoors, or indoors at this historic church!

Mobile World

By Penny Lloyd, Roanoke County Public Library

M

The Future is Here!

obile computing, simply defined, is “using a computer … while on the move.” But does mobile computing apply to you? The answer is probably yes, either directly or indirectly. Do you have a smartphone in your pocket? If you do, you use mobile computing. If not, you probably regularly communicate with a loved one who uses a smartphone, making yourself reliant on mobile computing. Do you own an iPad or some other type of tablet computer? If you do, you use mobile computing. Dropbox, Evernote, Flickr, or Google Drive? Yep, you’re mobile computing. Perhaps the best way to understand – and perhaps appreciate – mobile computing is by taking a look back at the evolution of personal computing through today. Then we’ll see how your Roanoke County Public Library can help you get your mobile computing “groove” on.

Unless you worked in an office in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, you probably don’t remember when the IBM Personal Computer (“PC”) was first introduced in 1981. The business community was almost breathless with excitement after they finally understood how this new tool could streamline office productivity. At that time, most secretaries were using the popular Selectric, or ball, typewriter to produce documents, and data computing took place on a “big iron” computer in a high-security, super-cooled facility far, far away. It wasn’t until the Internet became commercially available in the mid-1990s that true personal computing became, well, personal. People couldn’t wait to get home and hear “You’ve Got Mail” when logging into AOL through their screeching, dial-up modem. America was hooked! Technology and communications companies hurried to meet increasing demand, churning out smaller, cheaper, faster, and smarter computers, more user-friendly software, and speedier connections. Laptops signaled the real start of the mobile computing craze. Their sales soon eclipsed desktop sales as people flocked, laptop under arm, to coffee shops offering free WiFi. The cell phone market took off as well, with flip phones replacing clunky “bag” phones. Instead of a chicken in every pot

32

If you’re baffled by new technology, Roanoke County’s public libraries can help.

and a car in every garage, Americans seemed to want a computer in every home and a cell phone in every pocket. Now we are in a true mobile era. There are lots of things in the mobile computing toolbox you don’t need to concern yourself with, but let’s look at three essentials for on-the-go computing: • Digital devices (what we take on the go): iPhones, Android phones, tablet computers – like America’s darling, the iPad – are all digital devices we take with us. • Applications (what we want to be able to do on the go): Some of the more popular “apps” are Facebook, QuickOffice, Keynote, and Skype. At the top of the heap worldwide is Google Maps. • Cloud (how we get to our “stuff” from home or office devices while on the go): Don’t fret about how it works; just know the cloud is at the heart of mobile computing. Interestingly, while all of this is new to us, it’s not new in the industry. Look at what Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said during a speech at the Center for Design Innovation in 1983 (yes, 1983). “Apple’s strategy is really simple. What we want to do is we want to put an incredibly great computer in a book that you can carry around with you and learn how to use in 20 minutes. … [And] we really want to do it with a radio link in it so you don’t have to hook up to anything and you’re in communication with all of these larger databases and other computers.” So, have you found your place in the mobile digital world? Whether it’s learning a new skill or sharpening an existing one, your library can help! The Roanoke County Public Library offers a bevy of affordable classes at most of its branch libraries to meet the needs of the mobile computing community. A complete list of these and similar classes at the new Glenvar and South County libraries can be found in the technology section of this magazine. Hollins (561-8024) and Vinton (857-5043) also offer technology classes. Call your branch library to see what they have to offer!

Explore Park

Bill Gordge stands at the trailhead of his favorite Roanoke County hiking spot, which he helped to create!

Putting an Old Attraction Back on the Map By Scott Ramsburg

I

n September, I had the opportunity to go paddling down one of the most picturesque sections of the Roanoke River.

It was a cool day, but the sun reflected off the rapids at just the right angle to make me feel comfortable in short sleeves and a life jacket. Like hundreds of passers-by every day, I had admired the beauty of this landscape from the Blue Ridge Parkway as it spans the Roanoke River gorge. Nature always has a few surprises when you see it from another angle. From the bridge, it’s about 3.5 miles by boat to the point where Back Creek joins the Roanoke River, and the flat headwaters of Smith Mountain Lake begins. Throughout this stretch of river you can see bountiful wildlife, ancient rocky cliffs, and gorgeous green foliage. In my opinion, this is Explore Park at it’s best. Over the years, Explore Park has been many things to many people. It has been a living history museum, a trail biker’s oasis, a restful stop for weary travelers, an educational laboratory for students, and a comfortable fishing spot. The park was also envisioned as a regional tourist attraction. Arguably, that vision was never fulfilled before the living history portion of Explore closed in 2008 due to lack of funding. Now, thanks to a 99-year lease of the property from the Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority (VRFA), this hidden gem once again has the chance to shine. Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism officially began operating the property in October, and plans are in the works to put Explore Park back on the map.

40

The County began by hosting a public meeting to get input from interested citizens and stakeholders. According to those who attended the meeting, the top priorities for the park going forward should be: • Walking and Biking Trails • Cabins and Camping • Outdoor Events or Concerts • Environmental Education Programs and Activities • Public Water Access or Boat Rental • Preservation of the Historic Areas • Bicycling Opportunities • Outdoor Adventure, Ropes Course or Ziplines In the coming months, Roanoke County has committed to creating a new master plan for the property that will take into consideration these and other public suggestions. There will be additional community meetings and surveys to gain input from stakeholders and other interested citizens. In the short term, that will mean the preservation of Explore Park as a passive recreation facility - which means a natural area where the public can enjoy hiking, biking and a picnic lunch. As opportunities become available, the County plans to partner with business interests to create self-sustaining outdoor recreation attractions that residents and visitors to the area demand. Such attractions are greatly needed in the Roanoke Valley, as the region seeks to capitalize on outdoor tourism through a new brand as “Virginia’s Blue Ridge.”

Outdoors

VRFA Chairman Kelvin C. Bratton is excited about the Explore Park’s future under this new arrangement. “Our agreement with Roanoke County will preserve what we have created, and evolve the many opportunities we have cultivated throughout our 27 years of existence. This is a time for great enthusiasm and anticipation.” What’s next for Explore Park? The sky is the limit! Here’s what we can tell you right now. In addition to the over nine miles of walking and biking trails already open, we plan to open several new miles of trails by late Spring, 2014. These sections may include trails through the beautiful historical areas of the park. Look for an announcement soon about a grand re-opening celebration to take place at Explore Park in the spring. Despite its ups and downs, Explore Park has been blessed over the years with passionate volunteers. Dozens of individuals and organizations have given their time to patrol the park’s trails, beautify the landscape, and build picnic tables. A continued volunteer commitment will be needed as we work as a community to put Explore Park back on the map. If you’re interested in being a part of it, please call the Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism administrative office at (540) 387-6078 ext. 0. As I reflect on my own trip down the Roanoke River, I can see why so many have poured their hearts into this special place. Explore Park is a unique piece of land which preserves nature in a way seldom seen so close to an urban area. Changes won’t take place overnight, but I believe Explore Park is once again on a path that will make our region proud.

You Don’t Have to be a Pirate

Meet the man behind the mask... James Moser is the fencing instructor at Green Ridge Recreation Center.

By Anne Sampson

S

o, you haven’t exercised in…awhile, and you’re a little anxious about trying a sport or a class and embarrassing yourself. You need an activity that teaches the balance and focus of tai chi, the agility of tennis and gives you the mental workout of chess. It has to be low impact and it can’t require a whole gym full of new equipment. You need fencing. James Moser teaches modern Olympic fencing at Green Ridge Recreation Center. An Assistant Professor of Religion at Virginia Western Community College, he also serves as the coordinator of the Honors Institute at Virginia Western. He first took fencing as an elective physical education class as an undergraduate at Roanoke College nearly 10 years ago and its history and tradition captured his interest. Moser and a friend, Joshua Showalter, formed the first fencing club at Roanoke College, and Moser stayed involved as its coach. “Fencing is democratic in age and physical fitness,” he says. “It doesn’t require any special conditioning, there’s no age limit. Both sexes can fence.” While Moser provides all the equipment for the class, a new fencer can outfit themselves inexpensively. “You can get a starter kit with foil, jacket and mask for $99,” he says. There’s plenty of specialty clothing if you want it, but anyone can fence in khakis and sneakers. Moser’s five week class averages about 10 people and includes “tweeners” (ages 12-16) and mature adults as old as 70. Moser has no problem pairing younger and /or smaller fencers with larger and/or older opponents. “A larger person might have a little more reach,” he says, “but otherwise, size or weight is no advantage.” The advantage lies in cool thinking and quick reactions. Surpris-

Success comes not from over-powering your opponent, but through strategy, alertness and agility. I watch Moser and fencing student, Lindsey Narmour, demonstrate technique with foils and sabers. They fence in a strip about 5 feet wide, knees bent, weight evenly distributed, appearing relaxed but ready. With foils, Moser explains, the technique is mainly parry and thrust. Sabers, light but having wider blades, add slashes to the vocabulary of moves. Narmour, a 20 year old Hollins student, is aggressive in her attacks. When I ask her about that, she grins. “It definitely felt funny at first,” she says, “but you get used to it.” While Moser does give an overview of fencing history in his classes, he focuses on activity, exposing students to all aspects of modern fencing. Participants have a chance to fence everyone in the class and “if they’re not fencing, they’re judging,” says Moser, watching each bout to render judgment on points. The last class is a tournament. “Some people sign up for the class again,” in order to keep fencing, says Moser. Some have taken the class as many as 6 times. Over the years, Moser has been asked to take his knowledge of fencing into community. He has done demonstrations for a Roanoke College tai chi class, provided a week of P.E. at Hidden Valley High School and a demonstration at the Roanoke Catholic’s Shakespeare Festival. Moser and fencing partner Josh Showalter have provided day-long clinics for Virginia Tech satellite campuses. Don’t imagine you need to be a swashbuckling pirate or an Olympic athlete to reap the mind-and-body benefits of fencing!

Great Beginnings Youth Clinics

Did you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they need to compete in organized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional program targeted to preschool and Kindergarten aged boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervision of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work together with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.

Great Beginnings Basketball

The program’s goal is to help prepare children for the challenges of organized basketball in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. Each child, along with his or her parents, work together to learn basic motor skills needed to successfully move on to more organized sports in years to come. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skill stations are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in youth sports. The program will also help develop the child’s motor and cognitive skills as well as provide wonderful social interaction. Ages

NC Zoo Trip

Explore One of the Nation’s Largest Zoos

Join Roanoke County on a special trip to Asheboro, NC in March!

By Rod Hackney, of North Carolina Zoo

L

ocated just south of Greensboro, the North Carolina Zoo is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s finest zoos. It was the first American zoo designed from its inception around the “natural habitat” philosophy--presenting animals and plants in exhibits that closely resemble the habitats in which they would be found in the wild. Nationally recognized as the nation’s largest walk-through natural habitat zoo, in 2014 the N. C. Zoo will celebrate its 40th year of wild and wonderful family fun blended with just the right touch of education. In addition to 1,400 animals representing Africa and North America, the zoo will also feature a special attraction April through October, “Bugs: An Epic Adventure.” with giant animatronic insects. Numerous other special events are slated for the park’s 40th birthday. Among the zoo’s popular exhibits are those that display seals and sea lions, cougars, alligators, elephants, gorillas, baboons, rhinoceros, giraffes, and zebras. The 37-acre Watani Grasslands Reserve exhibit for rhinos and antelope is as large as many entire zoos. The 11-acre Prairie exhibit in the North American region showcases the zoo’s collection of bison and elk. The Lemur Exhibit is one of the latest additions to the zoo with two species of these “prosimians,” the Ring-tailed and the Redruffed, occupying the island habitat. Visitors are amazed and delighted at the acrobatic skills of these energetic tree dwellers, the first of their kind to be exhibited at the N.C. Zoo. All of the more than 70 lemur species are native to the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa. The “kidZone,” a special place where kids can dig, build and investigate—close up—the lives of animals, is currently under renovation but slated to reopen in spring 2014. It will include daily, live

50

animal encounters allowing kids to interact with reptiles, mammals and birds. It will be a great place for kids to climb, create explore and—best of all—have fun. The N.C. Zoo was the nation’s first state-supported zoo. Its African and North American exhibit regions span more than 500 acres with more than five miles of walkways. Another 1,700 acres are available for future development on this scenic site in the Uwharrie Mountains, making it the world’s largest land area zoo. The Uwharries are considered by geologists to be one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges. These beautiful hills are still called “mountains,” but the tallest point on zoo grounds is Purgatory Mountain at 937 feet above sea level. One of the zoo’s primary missions is to make visitors aware of the connections between humans and the world’s animals, plants and natural resources. Interpretive galleries and individual signs provide a wealth of information to make visits more enjoyable and educational. The best way to see the zoo is on foot, so visitors can explore the exhibits and trails. An internal tram is available to transport visitors between exhibit areas, but most animals are not visible from the trams. Visitors can enter or exit by either the North American or African gates, where a shuttle bus can transport them to the area where they’re parked. Zoo officials recommend taking a minimum of five hours to explore all that the park offers at a comfortable pace. Other nearby attractions include more than 100 potters in the Seagrove community south of the zoo, as well as the Richard Petty Museum devoted to the “King” of stock car racing in Level Cross and the North Carolina Aviation Museum at the Asheboro Municipal Airport. Of course, there is also the beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities of the Uwharrie Mountains region.

Wohlfahrt Haus - Golden Oldies

History abounds in Culpeper! Located one hour from Charlottesville, this unique destination has many wonderful historical attractions. A guided tour of the Museum of Culpeper History offers a large variety of state-of-the-art exhibits regarding Culpeper’s rich Civil War history, displays of dinosaur tracks discovered in a local quarry, Indian artifacts and more. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in town, built in 1821. During the Civil War, the Town was shelled several times, and the residents would hurry to the former rectory and hide in the large cellar. General J.E.B. Stuart regularly attended services at St. Stephen’s. The Graffiti House built in 1858 is one of few pre-Civil War dwellings to survive intact to this day. Because of its location, adjacent to the railroad depot, the house was used extensively by both Union and Confederate armies. After the great cavalry battle at Brandy Station, the house served as a Confederate hospital. The plaster walls on the second floor of the house are covered with an outstanding and unique collection of charcoal graffiti. You will also visit the Brandy Station Battlefield for a talk and tour. Lunch is on your own at one of the many restaurants on Davis Street, recognized as one of America’s Top 10 Great Streets in 2011. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, bus transportation and escort. Ages
