County Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Dear friends and neighbors,
S
ummer is the time of year for family vacations, but if your family’s calendar is anything like mine, there may not be enough room on the schedule for a trip to the beach. Let Roanoke County be your destination for exploration! I recommend starting your trip at Explore Park, where we’ve expanded our lineup of recreation programs this season to include mountain biking, paddleboarding and family nature hikes. We’ve also opened up a new parking area for easier access to trails, the river, and historic structures. While you’re there, don’t miss our newly re-imagined gift shop filled with artisan crafts. Too hot for a hike? We’ve got you covered! Splash Valley has added several new events and promotions to make sure your family stays cool. Then drop off the kids at one of over 175 weeks of summer camp programming. It’s all part of our commitment to providing quality recreation options at some of the region’s best facilities. Sincerely,

Stroll & Roll
Kettlebell training consists of whole-body movement exercises. From the elite athlete looking for an edge, to the sedentary person looking to discover fitness for the first time. It’s well-known that compound, whole body movements typical of kettlebell exercises are superior to machines that isolate muscles for improving muscle tone, body composition, and strength. Further, kettlebells strengthen the tendons and ligaments, making the joints tougher and less-susceptible to injury. Why switch to kettlebells?
Join us for this total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes power walking and intervals of strength and body toning exercises using exercise tubing, the stroller and the environment. What’s a Barre class like? Set to upbeat music, our 55-minute class starts with a warm up and sequence of total-body exercises using light free weights, squats and plank. We target the bicep, tricep, shoulder, chest and back muscles. Then we move into a series of ballet barre and floor exercises that focus on the thighs, hips, and glutes. The moves combine yoga, Pilates, some dance principles and stretching to tone and reshape muscles.

Jazzercise
Jazzercise is a pulse-pounding, beat-pumping fitness program that gets you results fast. It’s a calorie-torching, hip swiveling, Shakira’d-be-proud dance party with a hot playlist to distract you from the burn. These sessions are not prorated. Ten week program. Instructor: Cindy Bryan. AGES
Is dance experience required? No dance experience required. All types of people take our classes. We offer modifications and our instructors will make sure you are in the correct position in class. Our main priority is your safety. Will Barre tone my body? Barre works your muscles to their fullest potential and then stretches and elongates that same muscle group. Smaller waistlines, thinner thighs, lifted, stronger seats, and flatter abs can be seen in a matter of weeks. You will burn calories and gain lean muscle.
Cardio Jam
Fun, Dance and High Energy music is what Cardio Jam is all about. The upbeat music and easy to follow dance moves will burn calories and make your workout tons of fun. It’s easy, effective and totally energizing! Instructor: Pam Butler.

T’ai Chi
Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Six week program. Everyone Plays...Everyone Wins! L
ast season whenever the U6 Miami Dolphins took the field, the cry of “keep an eye on the girl” could always be heard from the opposing sideline. According to coach Scott Maxey the fastest player on the team was six year old Rayah Kelley, who stunned opponents by scoring six touchdowns in her first game. She was one of only three girls in Roanoke County’s NFL Flag Football program last year. Her father Dean Kelley remembers, “It was funny because all the little boys would walk up to her and say ‘I sure wish I was on your team.’ I joked that gives new meaning to the saying ‘You run like a girl!’ That would be a compliment nowadays.“ Rayah begged to participate in flag football after watching her brother, nine year old Ian Kelley, who had played the year before. Her father says he believes the NFL Flag program is a good starting point to get kids involved in organized sports. “It makes them feel like part of a team, providing a good non-contact solution that keeps your kid active. If they’re already involved in a sport, it’s a good cardio workout between other seasons. I wanted my daughter to do something other than just cheering to keep that activity level up.” Introduced three years ago in Roanoke County, the NFL Flag Football program is a fast paced alternative to tackle football, emphasizing skills development, fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The game focuses on skilled positions of quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Players rotate through these positions down a shortened field in an attempt to score touchdowns. The program’s unique game design gives every child a chance to play. Scott Maxey’s six year old son Seth was small for his age, but really wanted to become involved in football. His father wanted to get him involved in a way that would not leave his son afraid of the sport. When he was approached about coaching the team, Scott was initially reluctant, but quickly discovered the joy of mentoring
30
youth through the NFL Flag program. “This was my first time coaching anything, and it was an amazing experience! Being able to teach the kids the fundamentals of football without the dangers of injury, or having to have all the gear. All you need is a jersey and flags, and you’re ready to roll. I was amazed at how fast the kids were able to learn plays.” On the U6 Dolphins team, coaches used a system of color coded arm bands with pictures to help the kids learn plays. Participants were even encouraged to come up with their own plays and present them to the group. Several of the ideas they developed were actually incorporated into games. “I think the whole aspect of learning the different plays and altering the plays a bit gives them the opportunity to strategize and learn,” says Maxey. “For me it was more about them having fun. We didn’t keep score. We tried to keep the number of plays to a minimum. I had a total of five plays we would run in two separate directions.” Rayah’s father Dean hopes that his daughter will choose to play flag football again this season. “The morale seemed to be a little higher,” he said. “When I watched kids practicing tackle on the other side of the field in full gear… It’s hotter, more strenuous and uses more equipment. It’s surprising how much the game of flag football pulls you in. It’s a great alternative.” Scott Maxey agrees, adding that sportsmanship in flag football is through the roof. “Every sport is gonna have the parent that pushes their child to play hard, but in NFL Flag I didn’t see that a whole lot. Parents weren’t yelling at the kids. They were all having fun, getting along and congratulating each other at the end of the game.” Maxey watched as his coaching efforts last fall became the gateway to greater involvement in recreation league sports. Now he’s an assistant coach for his son’s tee ball team. “It was an opportunity I didn’t have with my first daughter who is now grown up. I grew in confidence and felt like I bonded with my son. It’s been great for both of us.”.

QuickStart Tennis is a new format to help children seven and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately - even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: $39 and includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned.
NFL sponsored programs like flag football (page 30) and punt, pass kick allow youth to learn skills in a non-threatening enviornment.

The Mansions of Wythe County
Wythe County is the home of three of the most beautiful mansions in Southwest Virginia. The Trinkle Mansion Bed and Breakfast was the former residence of William Trinkle, a gentleman farmer with 20,000 acres under his supervision. This Classical Revival home was completed in 1912. Also, you will tour the Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum located adjacent to the Visitors Center and offers the visitors a chance to return to the days when the Great Lakes to Florida Highway (Route 21) was the main route from Ohio to Florida. InspiredArtisan ByCrafts Nature at Explore Park W
hen Jim Privitera came to Roanoke in 2006, he found a warm welcome at Brambleton Center’s pottery studio. A retired college professor, Jim had recently picked up an interest in pottery and sought to develop his skills. Eight years later he is an established part of the region’s vibrant artisan community with his own studio in downtown Vinton. Jim is one of dozens of artisans with work now available at the Explore Park Visitor Center gift shop. It’s part of a new emphasis on local craftspeople at this popular Blue Ridge Parkway destination. According to Jim the venue is a fitting showcase for his pottery, which is often inspired by nature. “I frequently walk through the parks and overlooks on the parkway, and those are absolutely inspirational for somebody doing the kind of work I’m doing. With my craft, I hope visitors see some association with this area, and the nature and scenery of the parkway which I admire.” Roanoke area painter Janet Wimmer feels the same way. Several years ago she challenged herself to create one painting per day, using each mile along the Blue Ridge Parkway as her inspiration. Now she shows her works at select visitor centers along the parkway, including Explore Park. “Beauty is what it’s all about,” says Janet. “I’m a person that gets inspired. When I go up on the parkway, I’m in another world. It’s a transcendental type of feeling. I feel closer to heaven and God, and you don’t think about all the rat race and problems of the world when you’re up there.” Last season over 18,000 visitors stopped at Explore Park on their way along the parkway, making the visitor center an ideal location to showcase the area’s rich artisan heritage. Locals and travelers alike have been impressed by the variety of merchandise now available at the visitor center. In addition to Blue Ridge Parkway memorabilia, the gift shop now features items such as jewelry, textiles, pottery, paintings, wood carved items, and signed books from local authors. According to Roanoke County’s special events and tourism coordinator Wendi Schultz, an abundance of local artisans is one of the things that makes the Roanoke Valley so unique. “We’ve

almost doubled the number of local artisans displaying their works this year, and the gift shop has really turned into a destination. We have so many individuals with such a wide range of talents. It’s important to highlight our legacy.” Part of Explore Park’s expanded focus on artisans includes educating the public about local crafts. Schultz has created three new special events called Artisan Saturdays, which will be held on June 13, August 8 and October 10 from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The public will be invited to watch live demonstrations from local artists, bakers, authors and musicians who have items for sale at the gift shop. Mike Connolly is one of the craftsmen you might meet at an Artisan Saturday event. A retired school teacher, Mike loves to show off his skill turning gourds into works of art. He even goes by the nick name The GourdFather. For him, creating crafts is a labor of love. “I enjoy what I do,” says Mike. “When I retired, my wife told me ‘I married you for better or for worse, but not for lunch… Please find something to do.’” Mike started out making bird houses out of gourds, but quickly developed his own technique to create gourd pottery decorative arts. He takes inspiration for his designs from the region’s natural beauty, fused with the ancient Eastern European tradition of egg painting. “Working with gourds is relaxing to me. You wouldn’t think that tedious work can be relaxing, but it really is. With craft work you never get your money out hour-wise, but I hope people will appreciate what it is.” Fiber artist Sue Hurley is grateful for the opportunity to have her work displayed at Explore Park. By hand cutting and sewing pieces of printed fabric together, Sue creates wall hangings ranging from pocket size to mantle size. “My threads are my paint,” says Sue. “I incorporate them just like the stroke of a paintbrush. That’s how I see the beauty of the mountains and landscape and execute them with the fibers and fabric of the threads to reflect what I see. I am proud to

display my work at Explore Park because the notion of ‘exploring’ intrigues me. I never know where each piece is going to take me.” Like most artisans, Sue gets the most gratification from her work when it speaks to someone. “I want the art to speak to whatever their heart needs to see at the moment. It may be encouragement… I’ve had people that pick it up and start crying. I’ve had people tell me it evokes a childhood memory or desire to travel. Most of all I want it to evoke a feeling from them, and a desire to explore themselves!” .

Swing dance is a skill you can take with you to weddings, parties or even street performance if you’re into that!
S
wing dancing roared back into the public consciousness in the late 1990’s after over 60 years out of the spotlight. Today, with the popularity of television shows such as Dancing with the Stars and the growth of the modern big-band music scene, swing dancing is as popular as ever.
What should a beginner expect in their introduction to swing dance? According to Alice and Bob, they’ll be dancing the basic step within the first five minutes of the class. Once students master the basic step, they are encouraged to add a few simple turns. From there, all the rest of the moves are variations.
Swing Roanoke is a local group of swing enthusiasts that have danced together for over a decade. What started out as a church social activity blossomed into a community effort to share their love for this popular dance style. Now the group is making Green Ridge Recreation Center their permanent home for monthly dances and instructional classes.
“People see a clip of swing dancing and think they can’t do it,” says Bob. “The idea of musicality and technique should not be barriers. It’s stuff that will develop as you get the moves down. Some people will pick things up easier than others, but in the end it’s about enjoying the dancing and learning with your partner.”
When Alice Inouye attended her first swing dancing class, she had a hard time keeping up, and nearly gave up after the first couple of sessions. Now she’s a skilled swing dance instructor who takes pride in helping beginners overcome their fears. “There’s a lot of fear in partner dancing, and to me it was an opportunity to encourage people to try something they’ve never tried before,” says Alice. “I try to be very encouraging about the baby steps students take, and love to see people grow in their ability. I think the fear of failure is pretty high, but it doesn’t have to be! In swing dancing you’re allowed a lot of creativity, and the mistakes you can just laugh through.” Bob Carroll is also a Swing Roanoke founding member and lead instructor with the group. He says that their style of instruction works for everyone because it doesn’t require a partner. “Even though swing is a partner dance, in our classes we rotate partners while doing the lesson to help folks get better at doing a part. When you dance with different people, you tend to learn more and grow in confidence.” Some dancers come for the exercise and others for the technique, but all come for the fun! Participants range in age from their teens to their 80’s. “Swing dancing is absolutely fun,” says Bob. “You don’t have to be perfect or put any pressure on yourself to be able to do it and enjoy it. There’s lots of movement and activity, and the music’s great. You get all of the exercise through movement, plus you meet a lot of nice people, so there’s a social aspect to it.”
54
What will the beginner student learn after the first class? Here are Alice and Bob’s top five takeaways:
1
– Balance – Swing dance is about being responsible for your body, so you’re staying over your feet. It helps increase your coordination and balance.
2
– Lead and follow – You’ll learn how the lead signals and how the follower should recognize and respond to it. Partner dancing is a give and take! It’s about really engaging with your partner and the music, doing specific learned steps.
3
- Nonverbal Cues – Swing dance involves paying attention to your partner, and that ends up being more fun the more you practice. Together you are creating something and having fun with it, even if it’s the first time you’ve ever danced with someone.
4
– Creativity - Listening to the music alters the way you perform and should be an expression of your personality. You’re collaboratively creating something in the moment that didn’t exist before, and it’s a good feeling.
5
– Fun – If you’re not having fun you’re doing it wrong! With beginners we like to focus on learning enough to figure out how to have fun with it…. Getting people to do something a little crazy, or try something in a new way.
Swing Roanoke will be holding dances at Green Ridge Recreation Center on the third Friday of each month. These events will include both instruction and a social component. Intermediate level dancers are invited to arrive between 7pm and 8pm for more advanced lessons. Beginners are welcome to show up starting at 8pm for an introductory lesson. Open dancing runs from 8:30pm to 10pm. Tickets are just $10 in advance or at the door. Not quite ready to strut your stuff? Look for group lessons on Tuesday nights starting in May, covering a wide range of styles and techniques. Alice and Bob are excited about their new opportunity to bring their favorite pastime to Green Ridge Recreation Center. According to Bob, they’re always ready to welcome new dancers. “For me it’s been the fun, the people who have been coming and the enjoyment of helping people to get past having two left feet… or at least the thought they have two left feet…. In swing there’s no perfection. That’s why we love it!”

Ready, Set, Bike! Child Safety Tips FROM THE PROS By Jill Lucas-Drakeford of
Article author Jill Lucas-Drakeford is a Carilion Clinic community health educator and the coordinator for Safe Kids Southwest Virginia.
F
or every kid, getting a bike is a rite of passage. And while you want your children to enjoy this new found freedom, you also want to ensure their safety. More children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport. So before you let your child head out on that shiny, new bike follow a few of these simple safety tips.
Find the Right Fit: Purchase a bike that is the right size for your child. This is not the time to save a few bucks and buy something that your child will grow into. Your child’s feet should be able to touch the ground when sitting on the bicycle seat. Wear a Helmet: A helmet is the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injuries and death from bicycle crashes. A helmet that correctly fits your child’s head can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by 88 percent. Follow these tips for a great fit: • The helmet should sit level on your child’s head and low on the forehead. • You should only be able to put two fingers between your child’s eyebrows and the top of the helmet. • The side strap should make a Y underneath the ear and the buckle should be centered under the chin for a secure fit. • Once the helmet is buckled, you should not be able to fit more than one or two fingers under the strap. • The helmet should pull down on your child’s head when your child’s mouth is open very wide. If not, tighten the chin strap. In addition, look for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s certification label inside the helmet. And remember that your child watches everything you do, so be a role model and make sure you wear a helmet too. Bike Check: Before letting your child take off, make sure the bike’s reflectors are secure, the brakes work properly, the gears shift smoothly, and the tires are tightly secured and properly inflated. And take a look at your child’s clothing. Avoid sandals or flip flops as well as long or loose clothing, which can easily get caught in the chain or wheel spokes. Dress your child in sneakers and bright colored clothing for better visibility.
Learn
Rules of the Road: It can be hard for many children to judge the speed and distance of cars, so limit riding to bike paths, parks, and sidewalks (where allowed) until your child can demonstrate riding competence and knowledge of the rules of the road. Once your child is ready to ride with traffic, below are just a few things to keep in mind: • Ride with traffic, not against it, and stay as far to the right as possible. • Make eye contact with drivers. Bikers should make sure drivers are paying attention and are going to stop before they cross the street. • Stop at all intersections and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again before entering the street. • Look back and yield to traffic coming from behind before turning left. • Respect all traffic signals and stop at all stop signs and stoplights. • Utilize lights and reflective gear when riding at night or early in the morning. Now your child is ready to hit the road. Better yet, hit the road the road together and make bike riding a family affair. For more on bike safety, visit safekids.org..
