hat a difference a year makes! One year ago, local crafter Jody Lunsford introduced our area to the art of needle felting by offering a six week program in Roanoke County’s Winter 2011 recreation program guide. When I first met Jody she was a nervous wreck. I’d asked her to appear as my guest on a short segment of Recreation Television, a weekly program that I host on Roanoke Valley Television (RVTV3). After assuring her that this was a recorded segment and that we could start over at any time if she felt uncomfortable, we got started. Despite her reservations Jody was a natural on camera, and I was blown away by the creativity of her unique designs – mostly gorgeous and hand crafted animals figurines and ornaments made of wool. Sadly, the needle felting class did not meet the minimum registration requirements. Just two months later, Jody found out that she was one of five finalists in Martha Stewart’s nationwide Re-Marthable talent contest. These finalists were hand-picked from over 3,500 entries throughout the country, including chefs, crafters, creators and other innovators. Jody was flown to New York City with the other finalists for a week long series of segments that would culminate in a winner being chosen to receive a new custom-designed car courtesy of BMW. Despite being worried sick, Jody was truly honored to meet her lifelong idol. She says when she met Martha, all the worry simply melted away.

12

Re-MARTHA-ble Jody Lunsford’s Incredible Journey

Bolstered by a renewed sense of confidence, Jody set foot on the largest stage of her life. Before going on camera one of Martha’s assistants added to the pressure, saying “Martha has a cold today, so if she starts coughing you need to just take over.” Fortunately, both she and the famous home improvement mogul made it through the segment smoothly. At the end of the week Jody came out on top, receiving the grand prize during the week’s final show. Life has changed tremendously for Jody Lunsford since I first met her last winter. She has filled her calendar with demonstrations at regional craft expos and other public forums, drawing a crowd wherever she goes. She has even been commissioned to make needle felt projects for Martha Stewart herself. Within the next few months, Jody will be incorporating a new online business to sell her hand made creatures. Meeting her a year later, the difference in her outward character is striking. “I never had any confidence before,” says Jody. “Even though people would praise my work I never thought it was good enough. Now I think my pieces represent who I am. The confidence was a huge part of my life that I didn’t have.”

Jody is both confident and humble, never forgetting to thank the family and friends who helped support her during the rapid rise to needle felt stardom. She continues to be a huge Martha Stewart fan, and the two still have occasional correspondence about her craft. Next time you see a shiny “I thought I had to do my very bronze BMW sports utility vehicle with the license plate WON-N-NY, be sure to wave to Jody as you best. There were too many peo- pass by. If you’re lucky enough to catch her in the grocery store, she never hesitates to share her life ple watching and there were 180 changing story and love of the craft she now teaches. people in the audience. I was determined not to be nervous and “Needle felting could be just as popular as knitting or crocheting and it’s a lot more fun. It’s endless I wasn’t. Martha walked up and what you can create. Animals… Dolls…. Pictures…. It’s creating fuzzy friends, and it’s more exciting shook my hand and told me how than knitting a dull scarf. You can keep working on them even when they’re done. The more you beautiful my animals were. It was work the better they get. The more you work on them the more you make them become alive.” Sign an unbelievable opportunity to up for one of Jody’s two workshops at the Brambleton Center March 31 and April 13. Jails to Trails Wonderland at Walrond

life

crimes and the disposition of the court, the inmates can have their sentences reduced by the amount of time that they spend on an outdoor program. Those selected are very positive and receptive to this type of work, as it gets them out of the prison environment. Lt. Alexander states, “Working on these projects keeps the inmates busy, and their time in jail goes by faster because they are staying active and useful. Their work helps them rehabilitate and teaches them new skills, such as carpentry, construction, painting, and landscaping.”

By Jeanne Chitty

A visitor admires the beauty of nature on a new raised boardwalk trail at Walrond Park

E

ven on a chilly winter afternoon runners and dog walkers make their ways along the trails of Walrond Park, as photographers train their cameras on birds and couples soak up the sunshine on picnic benches. Children shriek with excitement in pursuit of their soccer ball across the goal line. A group of disc golfers cheer each other on when one of their Frisbees® sinks in a basket smoothly. Located off of I-81 near Exit 146, the rolling hills, fields, and wetlands of this beautiful park offer people of all ages many opportunities to enjoy nature and to engage in sports such as soccer, baseball, football, disc golf, biking, hiking, walking, and running. With the intention of improving the aesthetics and functionality of the 48-acre park, Roanoke County’s department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism was awarded a $57,000 Virginia Recreational Trails grant several years ago to build a new walking trail on the property. Building a trail is a time consuming endeavor. In a time of steep budget cutbacks and shrinking staff, the department faced a challenge in coming up with the manpower to complete the project before the grant expired. Responding to staffing needs for this and other ambitious park projects, Sheriff Winston and Major Poff of the Sheriff’s Department of Roanoke County contacted the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism to see if the two divisions could come up with a plan that would benefit the county while providing work for its inmates. According to Lt. Eric Alexander, prisoners who are interested in working on environmental projects go through a thorough screening process and have to satisfy specific requirements regarding their criminal history. Depending on the nature of their

18

Shoulder to shovel, ratchet to wrench, the park personnel and county crews collaborated together for over a year on the construction of a 2/3 mile-long stone surfaced trail, as well as a raised boardwalk and wildlife viewing platform that overlooks a wetland area. Deputy Rob Ketchum remembers, “The Parks Department brought in their large machinery to build the trail, and our inmates used hand tools to blend in the slopes to match the existing grade. They also removed a split rail fence and installed a new barrier fence. Our men quickly understood what had to be done and appreciated working outdoors to improve the environment.” Their work made a big difference not only to the park itself but also to the speed with which the plan was implemented. Lon Williams, Landscape Architect for Roanoke County’s department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, confirms, “The inmate crew’s contribution was valuable in that it saved staff time, and we were able to completely finish the sections that they had helped us with.” Visitors of all ages have numerous opportunities to spend their leisure time throughout the safe and well-designed park. Its rolling pathways have a special appeal to aging but active residents of this popular retirement area. Although the types of exercise that seniors enjoy doing become fewer as the years roll on, today our elders know that a regular exercise program will help to maintain flexibility, balance, and mobility; to increase endurance and confidence; to control weight; and to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. As author Casey Meyer observed, “Walking is the universal elixir for body, mind, and spirit.” The wetlands at Walrond Park attract animal lovers, photographers, and artists who enjoy observing the wildlife and flora in this unique ecosystem. With the increasing environmental challenges that face us everyday, the wetlands provide an important education in biodiversity. Also known as marshes, swamps, bogs, and fens, wetlands are habitats for a wide variety of animals and plants. Not only are the wetlands nesting areas, rookeries, and migration stopover sites for numerous birds, but mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects co-exist in the soggy area, surrounded by soft-stemmed and herbaceous grasses, shrubs, and wildflowers. According to the Defenders of Wildlife organization, more than 33% of the animals on our Endangered Species List depend on wetlands either directly or indirectly for their survival. Thanks to the efforts of people from all walks of life, we have already made a difference and will continue to do so for years to come.

Washing Away Pain Through Aquatic Exercise

By Scott Ramsburg

L

Aquatics

ouanna Mazey has been living with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis for over 10 years. When first diagnosed, she vowed to manage her pain through exercise rather than pain medication. Louanna tried various exercise and water aerobics programs, but nothing seemed to be a permanent solution to ease the pain. Then two years ago she began taking the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Now she is one of dozens of participants whose lives have been dramatically changed by this program. About 46-million Americans have been diagnosed with a form of arthritis or related condition, according to the Arthritis Foundation. That’s nearly one in three people! Aquatic exercise programs like the American Foundation Aquatics Program help reduce pain by increasing your body temperature and circulation while gently training joints and muscles. For Louanna Mazey, participation in the program has not only reduced the pain, but also provided a social network for coping with the challenges of her diagnosis. “I feel like I’m a better person by being in this program. I’m getting out socially and interacting with people that might be in worse shape than me. I can let them know how I’ve dealt with it rather than taking medication. It’s like a family, we all get along so well. We look out for each other.” Instructor Susan Kraughto agrees that both the physical and social aspects of the program play a key role. “When people come to class they come experiencing pain, stiffness, limitations in mobility, they might feel a hopelessness or anxiety. They feel isolated. When they come to the program at Green Ridge they experience an environment where the buoyancy of the water helps support them in their joints, they gain motion, flexibility, their pain decreases and the social aspect of the group helps them feel like they’re not alone.” James Ward suffered a serious neck injury in 1998 and lived with a cocktail of pain control medications for 13 years. Now just three short months after starting aquatic exercise class, James is completely off medication and nearly pain free. “The movements and such, I can do there that I can’t do outside of the water,” says James. “I’m starting to get my balance back. It had gotten to the point I was literally falling – stumbling all over the place. To be honest I couldn’t swear to it that water aerobics cured me, but I know I’m off pain medications and I feel it’s a contributing factor.” Patricia and Steve Howell draw a few stares when they take classes at Green Ridge five days a week. Steve participates in the program while hooked up to an oxygen tank placed beside the pool. Patricia says that she has lost weight and that her husband has gained increased mobility and balance. “We do this together, so I think it has brought us closer together,” says Patricia. “Health wise it has helped. I am taking less medications and

24

The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program at Green Ridge has helped hundreds in our area reduce arthritic pain.

since Steve started his oxygen level has dropped. Now he can take his oxygen off at home while at rest. Before it was 24-7.” The participants come from many different backgrounds and bring with them a range of health challenges, but in the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program they find support and often lasting friendships. Not every participant sees such dramatic results as Louanna, James, Patricia or Steve, but most of them cherish the camaraderie forged through this shared experience. Even the class instructors are inspired by these positive daily interactions. Susan says she gets just as much out of the program as her participants. “The people who come to this program are often in chronic pain. I receive great personal satisfaction in knowing that I can help them feel better. I know the class is going to give them hope and I know the class will help them take control and manage the symptoms they have to live with. To see their joy in the face of that kind of pain, to see them relax in the face of that kind of limitation, makes me feel I can fulfill a purpose in my life.”

Wellness

armer weather is right around the corner and before we know it, kids will be out of school, looking for fun ways to spend their summer vacation. There’s no better way to occupy their time than by getting out with them in the nice weather for some physical activity. It’s a great time of year for your family to establish new, healthier routines. Staying active is one of the best ways for kids to live a healthy lifestyle as they grow.

Healthy Kids

Obesity has become an epidemic in America and, unfortunately, our kids are not immune to the risks. Among children ages 2-19, about one in three is overweight or obese, according to the American Heart Association. That is a staggering statistic. While the number of obese children and teens has steadily increased over the past two decades, families can take an active role in making sure their children don’t become part of the statistics. “The best place to start is at home,” said Julie Blanchard, a Carilion Clinic health educator. “If the whole family participates in a healthy lifestyle, it can be easier on the kids.”

Like so many things during childhood, kids learn a lot from their families. This is no different when it comes to staying physically active. If parents lead an active lifestyle, their kids are more likely to as well. So, how much physical activity should your child be getting? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. The exercise should be varied, with some moderate and vigorous activity. Moderate activity could include a walk after dinner each night or having the kids help with the yard work. While they may not be crazy to participate at first, if the entire family is included in these activities, it becomes part of everyone’s daily routine. Vigorous activities don’t necessarily need to be hard exercises. Consider activities, such as jumping rope, swimming, or playing games like tag, soccer, or basketball. The CDC recommends that children participate in vigorous physical activities at least three days a week. Now that you have some examples of ways to keep your kids active, how can you get them started living a more active, healthy lifestyle?“First, make physical activity a priority in your family,” said Jill Lucas Drakeford, a Carilion Clinic health educator. “Make a plan to do something physical with your family each day.”

38

Children are all about fun, so try to keep your family’s physical activities varied and interesting. Plan birthday parties or family gatherings around physical activities, like a game of tag or dancing to everyone’s favorite music. If your child has never done yoga or group exercises, try a class or train for a community event, such as a charity walk. If you’re motivated to try something new, your child may also take an interest in a new activity.

It’s A Family Affair

“Parents can also help their children get into a healthy routine, by giving them toys that encourage physical activity, such as balls, kites, and jump ropes,” Drakeford said.

Exercise will not only help your child become healthier, but it will help build self-esteem and confidence, which is key to staying motivated and sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Another important thing for all parents to remember when it comes to their children’s health: limit “screen time.” Children 2 years old and older should spend no more than two hours a day watching television, playing video games, and using the computer, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. ”It’s important to know how much time your children are spending in front of a television or computer screen,” Blanchard said. “Set limits for the entire family and follow through on those limits.” Summer is a great time to be active outdoors, but remember, living a healthy lifestyle also means living a safe one. Always wear sunscreen when outside. The CDC recommends sunscreen of 15 SPF or higher. Everyone should apply 15 to 20 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply at least every two hours, just to be safe. It’s also important to take frequent water breaks in the shade or indoors. It’s easy to become dehydrated when your family is having fun. Scheduling water breaks can help everyone remember to drink water before feeling thirsty. There are so many reasons why children should become more active: helping with self-esteem, stimulating their brain, helping to avoid anxiety and depression, helping them learn coordination, and building strong bones and muscles. But the most important reason would be to avoid serious diseases, such as diabetes. The benefits of a daily activity routine far outweigh any negatives. Making a conscious effort to keep your kids active now will help them grow into healthy, active adults.

The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. These movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Also improve your circulation by stimulating blood flow to the organs. Six week program. Archery was added to our summer lineup last year, and was tremendously popular. By Parks, Recreation and Tourism Staff

Exciting Archery Camps for Youth

Athletics

T

hanks to the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP), many of the youth in our area are getting the opportunity to shoot bows and arrows in their physical education classes or as an after school club or activity. Implemented in Virginia in 2006, this program provides an opportunity where children as young as eight can experience archery for the first time in a safe, structured environment. Without this opportunity, many boys and girls would not have the chance to explore the world of archery. The NASP archery program is designed to focus on three areas of education: physical, social, and character development. There is no prior knowledge or skill needed to participate in archery, as participants are taught all skills necessary to be successful in the program. The core content of the program covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core strengthening physical fitness and self-improvement from a curriculum designed by the Department of Education in an unconventional classroom format. One of the differences between archery and other physical education activities is that strength, speed and size does not necessarily equal success. Any child, regardless of their age, gender, or physical limitations can have fun and can have a positive experience. This is possible through the use of the “Genesis” bow. The bow, designed exclusively for the NASP, is a perfect teaching bow as it allows all children to use the same equipment with equal success. Because of the success rate, archery also builds self-esteem and pride of accomplishment. Another attribute of the archery program is that it can be done successfully both indoors and out, allowing children to put down their electronics and get outside for play.

46

Due to the growing popularity of archery, the Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department offers several weeks of Archery Camp modeled after the NASP program. Roanoke County Athletics Supervisor Allen Hayes stated that “because of the popularity the NASP has in our area schools, it was natural to offer the experience over the summer in a camp environment.” The camps, now in their third year, use a low teacher to student ratio of 1:6, allowing for each student to receive the individualized, focused attention needed to succeed. Camp participants will shoot for fun and compete against their peers for prizes. Because of archery’s growing popularity and high rate of success, Virginia hosts a summer archery competition in the Commonwealth Games where youth can display the skills learned in a competitive environment. Several former campers have gone on to use the skills learned from our archery camps to compete at the state level with success.

See our camps insert to learn more about this and other fantastic summer programs for youth. Archery camp is open to ages 8 to 14.

Great Beginnings Youth Clinics

Did you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they needed to compete in organized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional program targeted to three, four, and five year old boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervision of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work together with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required. New!

Quick Start Tennis

Quick Start Tennis is a new format to help children eight and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed; the court size, the racquet sizes, the balls, the scoring system, the height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages four and eight can start playing tennis almost immediately, even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate raquets. Ages

Three Generations of Campers

Outdoors

nce upon a time… Those four words have introduced countless stories to listeners both young and old who are prepared to enjoy a tale told by a family member, friend, sitter, or teacher. The familiarity of those small words bring back waves of fond memories of closeness, comfort, and companionship, as our favorite fables conjure up images of a fantasy world, a distant era, or a family history. Those famous words can be a bridge between fiction and fact, between then and now, and between us and them. Like fissures in the mirror of time, we can see ourselves reflected in those who lives have passed and imagine who we could become in the future. For the members of the Ratliff family of Roanoke and Charlotte, Camp Roanoke has been the time portal that has united three generations past and present in the spirit of adventure, leadership, and respect for our planet. Established in 1925 as a camp for boys, Camp Roanoke shepherded young men through various programs that built not only strong and capable bodies but that improved self-confidence, teamwork, and responsibility. Quentin Ratliff, a former Roanoke resident, first attended the camp in the early 1950s. He appreciated his youthful experiences so much that he went on to be a very active leader when the camp became affiliated with the YMCA. He was delighted to share his fondness for outdoor living when his son David first decided to try out the camp programs in 1978. Linda Ratliff, Quentin’s wife, recalls that when her husband visited their son one summer, he exclaimed, “You know, it’s a lot like it was when I was a kid spending my summers here!” He would be so proud to see his granddaughter Lindsey carry on the family tradition as she enters her fifth year at Camp Roanoke this summer. Back in the late 1980s the camp closed when Roanoke County bought the property to construct the Spring Hollow Reservoir. Realizing the need and potential for developing a more contemporary camp in the beautiful area, the County started its fund raising efforts and renovated the 110 acres of mountain land, which

are surrounded by 600 acres ringing the reservoir. Since then, the new and improved Camp Roanoke has provided diverse highquality summer activities for children from all over Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington, DC. These programs have taught young campers character-building skills and have embraced cultural diversity, while practicing the “leave no trace” principle of environmental stewardship. The staff at Camp Roanoke consists of college graduates who have passed accredited outdoor leadership programs. They are also Wilderness First Responders and have complete a two-week course encompassing First Aid, CPR, and AED training, group dynamics, conflict management, and defensive driving. All of the staff members are subject to a thorough screening process and background checks. A safe and healthy lifestyle is the prime directive at the camp. All prospective campers go through a physical assessment prior to admission. The staff nurse administers medications, and special diets can be accommodated. To keep the children well nourished for their strenuous programs, the camp chef prepares delicious meals and nutritious snacks in the full-service professional kitchen. Getting used to being away from their families and homes is challenging for most new campers. But even more difficult than being separated from their familiar surrounding is having to observe the camp’s “technology-free” policy. No phones, no iPods, no Nintendo®, no Nooks®! To keep in touch with their folks, the kids can receive emails and upload photos at the daily mail call. Instead of relying on electronics for their entertainment, the children read books, get creative with arts and crafts, challenge each other over board games, perform in talent shows and skits, learn new dance steps, get coated in Paintball, sing around the campfire, and gaze at the millions of stars in the evening skies. The numerous activities available to different age groups make most parents wish that they could turn back the clock and join

in the fun. In the Discovery day program, Camp Roanoke offers campers entering kindergarten through fifth grade a weekly field trip, archery (for ages seven and up), hiking, rock wall climbing, field games, yoga, leadership skills, and arts and crafts. Kids going into third and fourth grades who join the Explorer residential program enjoy the same activities, as well as canoeing, basketball, disc golf, and environmental studies. In the new Pioneer residential program, fifth and sixth grade campers who are interested in preserving our natural environment through sustainable practices will be intrigued by an onsite green technology learning lab, when they’re not mountain biking, running cross country, or learning to swing through the low rope course. Outdoor adventures are sure to attract campers entering sixth and seventh grades in co-ed residential Voyager program that features canoeing, hiking, real rock climbing, mountain boarding, archery, both high and low rope courses, environmental studies, arts and crafts, and horseback riding. This summer Lindsey Ratliff, along with a limited number of eight and ninth graders, will enter the Adventure residential program, which includes the aforementioned activities in addition to caving, kayaking, Dutch oven cooking, overnight camping, and the zip line course. Lindsey’s mother Kathy says, “Our daughter really enjoys mountain boarding, canoeing, and getting up on those challenging zip lines – now that’s a thrill!” Next year Lindsey can look forward to more high-octane adventures in the Outpost program. While learning about outdoor living skills and the “leave no trace” principle, the young people in grades eight through ten will experience three nights of offsite camping, backpacking, hiking, real rock climbing, high and low rope courses, and swimming. Campers entering ninth through twelfth grades in the advanced Trek program are in for breathtaking excitement that begin at Camp Roanoke with practice on the low ropes and rock wall climbing. Then the group will travel to the wild and wonderful New River Gorge in West Virginia for whitewater rafting, real rock climbing, hiking, environmental education, swimming, campfires, and tent camping.

Agreeing wholeheartedly, Lindsey’s grandmother Linda declares, “It means so much to us that Lindsey represents the third generation of the Ratliff family to attend Camp Roanoke. We truly believe in the benefits of the Camp’s programs because of the positive outcomes that we’ve seen in the lives of my husband Quentin, our son David, and now Lindsey. We must have done something right by connecting with Camp Roanoke!”.

Proud mom Kathy Ratliff tells how Camp Roanoke has changed her daughter’s life. She states, “When Lindsey went to camp for the first time, she didn’t know anyone and was very shy. Everyone made her feel welcome, and she quickly made friends with the other campers, especially a couple of girls from the DC area and the shore. Being a veteran camper has given Lindsey a sense of independence and self-confidence. She’s really blossomed, and now she’s interested in becoming a counselor and mentor.”

Falling For Niagara By Scott Ramsburg

Top Ten Reasons To Join Us

W

e offer a wide range of vacation and travel opportunities, but every once in a while a trip comes along that you just can’t miss! This June, be one of the 12-million visitors per year to see the world famous Niagara Falls, on a spectacular six-day tour. Still not convinced? Here are the top 10 reasons to join us: 10) See the falls from BOTH sides – You probably already know that Niagara Falls are the second highest in the world, next to Victoria Falls in Africa. Did you know that what we call “Niagara Falls” is actually three different falls? Our tour will show you the stunning beauty of this landmark from the American and Canadian sides of the border. 9) Use flowers to check the time – One of the most unique attractions at the Falls is the Niagara Parks Floral Clock. Made with up to 16,000 plants, this 40-foot wide timepiece is both beautiful and awe inspiring. 8) See a movie on Canada’s largest screen – Enjoy a presentation of Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic and learn the unique story of the falls on a 60-foot high IMAX display.

Travel

7) Stay just a block away – Your hotel is located in the heart of the Fallsview Tourist District, just a five minute stroll to the Falls and other attractions. 6) No kids allowed – This is a trip for ages 55 and older. That means you can travel at your own pace, without the whining and distraction of youngeters. 5) Get a history lesson – We’ll tour several historical attractions including the Casa Loma castle, built in 1911 at the cost of $3.5 million (at that time). This elegant residence is a popular location for films, and can be seen in X-Men and Chicago. Also, tour the historic Parliament Buildings in Toronto.

54

4) A completely guided tour – Every step of the way you will be guided by a knowledgeable trip host. Roanoke County has partnered with PML Travel and Tours to make sure everything is planned. According to Barbara Peaks from North Carolina, “PML went above and beyond to help during my trip. They don’t just plan it and leave you. They call you during your trip to make sure everyone is having fun, and they provide support for group leader to make sure there are no last minute questions or situations.” 3) Ride on the Maid of the Mist – Get up close and personal with the falls, and prepare to GET WET as you board North America’s oldest tourist attraction. This boat ride will take you right into the dense mist of spray inside the Canadian Horseshoe Falls! 2) Shop in downtown Toronto – Canada’s largest city is not far from the falls. Get a tour of the town, then stop at Eaton’s Center, one of the largest shopping districts in Canada. 1) EVERYTHING is included – Get five nights in a hotel, five breakfasts, three dinners, all attraction fees, complete baggage handling, and deluxe motor coach transportation, all for as little as $789! Barbara Peaks highly recommends the trip saying, “They’re dependable, responsible, you’ll have no second thoughts knowing that you’re going to get the help or support that you need. They make sure you have good rooms, and the buses are top of the line!” We’re excited to offer two travel opportunities to visit the falls this Spring and Summer. First, join us on June 2 for a full week of fun in the Niagara Area. If you enjoyed that trip, you might also like the Best of Eastern Canada in October. This trip features a rail excursion and a visit to the French Canadian city, Montreal. Register Online: it’s fast, easy and secure! Mansions of Wythe County

Wythe County is the home of two of the most beautiful mansions in Southwest Virginia. The beautiful Fort Chiswell Mansion is a 10,000 square foot brick colonial home built in 1839 that stands like a fortress on a bluff above a busy highway where Interstate 81 and 77 converge. Chris Disibbio bought the 170 year old treasure at an auction in 2002 and has spent thousands of dollars to restore this National Historic landmark to its former glory. Your guided tour includes both the interior and exterior of this spectacular place. Included is a boxed lunch at the Mansion. The Trinkle Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Wytheville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the former residence of William Trinkle, a gentleman farmer with 20,000 acres under his supervision. This Classical Revival home was completed in 1912. The home has an impressive seven fireplaces, two large bathrooms on the second floor, which was uncharacteristic for that time period, as well as state of the art technology for 1912 including steam heat and a built-in central vacuum system. A tour of the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace and Museum is also included. Fee includes all tour fees, boxed lunch, bus transportation and escort. Ages

Summit Theater

Bluefield, West Virginia is home to this community theatre which was constructed in 1924. This community theatre group has been performing for the past 45 years and is offering a private showing of the award winning play, The Passing of Pearl. The play is set in a diner in Memphis in the 1980’s and tells the story of a brash, outspoken and hilarious waitress trying, along with her good friend and colleague Daphne, to pick up the pieces and carry on after the death of Pearl, the kindhearted old lady who owned the diner. A catered buffet lunch at the Theatre is included. Also included is a guided tour of The Baldwin House which housed the secret office of the Baldwin Felts Detective Agency. The agency became known for crime-busting after it successfully tracked down members of the Allen family wanted in a shootout in 1912 at the Courthouse in Hillsville. They are best known for their violent confrontations with labor union members in such places as the Pocohantas Coal Field region. The House still has the Jail cell used by the agency.
