County Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Dear friends and neighbors, It’s an exciting time for Roanoke County as we lay the foundation for some exciting plans! At Explore Park, we’re working closely with several community partners to establish a championship level disc golf course and a new bike skills park. We’re also actively seeking businesses to build and operate some of the larger amenities called for in our Adventure Plan. At Green Hill Park, we’re excited to be opening a new accessible fishing platform this spring. These are just a few of our long list of projects designed to provide recreation access while enhancing the Virginia’s Blue Ridge region’s growing reputation as an outdoor adventure destination. Roanoke County is also committed to sustainable park maintenance. That’s why we’ve recently expanded our Park Partners program, providing volunteers the opportunity give back to the community and ensure a high-quality experience for our visitors. Our roster currently has over 400 recurring volunteers, an increase of more than 30% over previous years. I’m thankful to these dedicated citizens who keep our parks looking beautiful, and look forward to the continued growth of this fantastic program. Let us know if you want to join the movement! Sincerely,

I’M MORE THAN A STEREOTYPE... I was told I would never make it through high school, much less, earn a college degree. I was told I would grow up to be just like the parents that neglected me. I was told I was too old to be impressionable, too old for advice and too old to change the trajectory of my future. What told me these lies? Stereotypes. I was 13, and I was in foster care. These stigmas are unjustified and negatively affect our kids in foster care. The truth of it is, these teenagers have been removed from their home through no fault of their own due to unsafe conditions. These unwarranted stereotypes only add to the difficulty our teenagers face on a daily basis. I urge you to do your part to diminish the negative misconceptions. After all, every child deserves love and encouragement.
FIVE STEREOTYPES THAT NEGATIVELY AFFECT TEENAGERS IN FOSTER CARE 1. Teenagers in foster care are inherently bad. People often do not realize that kids come into care because of abuse or neglect from their legal guardians. It is rarely the child’s behaviors, more so, the parent’s bad choices that lead to a removal. 2. Teenagers in foster care behave worse than the average kid. Teenagers in foster care are just that, teenagers. They have complicated lives and often grow up too quickly due to week days in court, an assortment of parent figures and multiple placements. They might roll their eyes and experience mood swings, but what average teen doesn’t? 3. Teenagers in foster care will repeat the negative behavior of their parents. “Recognizing my situation and putting myself in foster care was the best decision of my life...” says a Roanoke County teenager. A lot of our teens recognize the toxicity of their circumstances and strive for a better life. 4. Teenagers in foster care have no drive. “Teachers wildly underestimated me, and that was my motivation to earn my M. Ed.,” says a former teenager in care. After spending time with our teenagers during our Independent Living program, I was blown away by the amount of ambition that was in that room. They were preparing their resumes, looking for jobs and applying for colleges. 5. Teenagers in foster care are not impressionable. “It took one meaningful relationship to understand that I was deserving of love..” says a Roanoke County teenager. A lot of our teens establish healthy and encouraging relationships during their time in care that last a lifetime. “...I still talk to my social worker and my previous foster parents. They changed the course of my life, if you need proof just look at my kids.”
COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS...LET’S TALK FOSTER CARE
A Community Conversation..Let’s Talk Fostering is an inside look at foster parenting! A foster family will tell their story, open the floor for discussion and hold a Q&A. Our hope is to spark meaningful conversations about the need for foster parents in Roanoke County. • April 11, 2017 at Brambleton Center - 6:00pm-7:30pm • May 10, 2017 at Green Ridge Recreation Center - 6:00pm-7:30pm

The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goal is to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. Six week program at the Brambleton Center. Swimming Lessons
Green Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Preschool and Parent-Child swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or canceled due to lack of enrollment.
Baby Drops
No need to wait! Start the process of introducing your baby to the water sooner rather than later. This parent and child class will start building your baby’s confidence and swimming readiness. What a fun opportunity for you and your child to explore the water and become adjusted together. Parents will learn basic water skills to keep their children safe and help them to love the water. Safety information and teaching techniques will be provided to parents. Parental participation is required.
Level l Lessons
Let’s have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. They will gain basic aquatic skills including; beginning swimming strokes, breath control, floating, and kicking - all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments. The goal is a positive attitude towards swimming and water safety.

Dive into a New Adventure! Have you ever wanted to overcome a fear? Are you looking to cross an event off your bucket list? Why not accomplish these feats at 120 miles per hour through Roanoke County PR&T? This thrill packed adventure will take you to No Limits Skydiving located in Victoria, Virginia. “It’s a really good experience,” said Parachute Packer, Jeff Kent, “You can’t image what it is going to be like until you do it!” No Limits Skydiving has been in business for 15 years according to Owner, Mark Wilson. Wilson, an experienced skydiver with 12,000 jumps,
40
has skydived into major sporting events that include NASCAR, Major League Baseball, and college football games. Previous skydiving experience is not required to participate on the day trip, and first-time skydivers are welcome. “90 percent of our customers are first-time skydivers,” said Wilson. His staff are all full-time, from the pilot to the parachute packer and instructors. Half of the instructors are former military members, with 6,000 to 14,000 jumps each. Once you arrive at the facility, paperwork must be completed prior to training

and dressing into equipment. As far as equipment, jumpsuit, harness, helmet and goggles are provided. Once these steps are completed, you take a 20-minute flight to the jump altitude of 12,000 feet. The tandem skydive lasts roughly 6 minutes from the initial jump to the drop zone, with one-minute of free fall and five minutes under parachute. If you are worried about safety, No Limits Skydiving has you covered. All airplanes go through complete inspections required by the Federal Aviation Administration. They also follow FAA mandates which requires parachutes to be inspected every 160 days. No Limits Skydiving is also a
member of the United States Parachute Association. “It was way different than what I thought it was going to be,” said Kent when reflecting on his first skydive. “When you watch a cloud whiz past your head at 120 miles per hour, how do you describe that to somebody?” said Wilson. “You have to try and experience it one time in your life!” Whether you’re looking for a thrilling afternoon, or completing your bucket list, this day trip is one you don’t want to miss! See page 41 for more information about the trip.

NEW: Hometown Stars Trip
Join us as we visit the Birthplace of the Country Music Museum. The talents and repertoires of Southwest Virginia musicians will be on display. The musicians proved to be a deep musical well for the nation’s growing recording industry. Few other parts of the country produced so much commercially recorded rural music in the pre-World War II era. Still, only a handful of Southwest Virginia performers saw real fame or money. Most were simply hometown stars, playing music locally and living average lives. After visiting the museum we will head to downtown Bristol for a tour of the town where half of the road it is Virginia and the other half is Tennessee. Concluding our day you will be on your own at Bristol’s old fashioned Blackbird Bakery. Price includes biscuit, transportation, admission to the Museum, Lunch at Burger Bar and escorts. Age

These museums include Lynchburg’s first hospital, a reconstructed railway station and a chapel and are amidst the cemetery’s notable rose gardens, which should be in full bloom. Next, you will travel to the Depot Grille for lunch on your own. The restaurant is located in the historic riverfront area and provides a unique lunch experience, as the kitchen is contained within real freight cars! Your last stop is at the Point of Honor House, a beautiful historic home once occupied by Dr. George Cabell, a personal friend of Thomas Jefferson and physician to Patrick Henry. The home has a rich history, complete with stories of civil war spies. Cost includes van transportation, tour tickets and escort fees. Age
