Our indoor aquatics area is designed with family fun in mind. Whether you’re looking for a place for the kids to splash around, water relaxation, water slides or lap swimming, there’s something for everyone here. The indoor pool features a 15-foot tall water slide, zero-depth entry, a hot tub, a current river, two lap lanes, a children’s water playground and much more. You’ll never have to wander around the building feeling lost. If you need help operating the equipment, or maximizing your workout, just let a staff member know. We pride ourselves on active staff involvement and overall facility cleanliness. Don’t worry about keeping an eye on the little ones while you’re at Green Ridge; we’ll do that for you! Staff will provide plenty of structured activities and keep the kids busy while you’re taking a class, playing basketball or working out. Children who are members from 6 weeks to 8 years of age are welcome for up to two hours per day. A parent or guardian must be present in the center to use this service.

Similar to A.S.K., Ridge Kids is an after-school program at Green Ridge Recreation Center, serving K-5 students at Fort Lewis, Glen Cove, and Glenvar Elementary Schools. Summer Art Series

New Workshops With Michael Farrar By Jeanne Chitty

Arts

he fuse of creativity was ignited in Michael Farrar when he was only six years old. Although neither of his parents was artistically inclined, they encouraged their young son to boldly go with his pencils where no one in the family had gone before. “I was the oddball,” Michael recalls. “One day I just started drawing and coloring everything around me.” As he grew up, he discovered the joy of painting with oils and branched into watercolors. In high school the budding artist learned the intricate technique of carving and printing with woodcuts. With an ever -expanding portfolio, Michael eagerly participated in outdoor art shows. While at Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, Michael gained additional experience in copperplate and zinc etching, as well as printmaking and sculpture. Surrounding himself with various giants in the world of art history, he became inspired by the exquisite colors of Monet, the non-Cubist phases of Picasso, the surreal symbolism of Bosch, and the elegant satire of Hogarth. Michael divulges with a laugh, “My work often depicts characters reveling in their flaws.” His senior art show, which featured an extensive collection of his paintings, lithographs, etchings, carved stone, and found object sculptures, was the third best selling show on campus.

In 1976 Michael began teaching art in the public school system in Clifton Forge and continued there for seven years. In addition to teaching at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton Forge and the Studio School in Roanoke, he has been a fine arts instructor at the Brambleton Center since 2004.

Since he was a child, Michael obviously has never hesitated to explore new paths to satisfy his boundless creative curiosity. Throughout his life he has refined his style by skillfully blending traditional techniques with his distinctive contemporary interpretations of people, places, and things. One of Michael’s most notable gifts is his ability to convey luminous glowing color and light that seem to come from within his paintings. Covering a broad spectrum of subject matter, his works elicit emotions, memories, and inspiration from viewers of all ages. Both he and his wife, who works in acrylics and water-based media, are represented by Signature 9 Gallery in downtown Roanoke.

His classes will encompass drawing with pencil, charcoal, and ink; painting with watercolor, gouache, and oil; portraiture; and mixed media. These introductory classes will emphasize composition, color, and process. Critique sessions will help to strengthen each artist’s skills. “I stress the importance of traditional techniques,” says this motivating teacher. “I like to provide a solid foundation with the mastery of drawing, mastery of color, and mastery of materials.” In his drawing classes, he will cover composition, perspective, definition of shapes, gesture drawing, lighting, shading, and texture. His watercolor and oil painting students will learn about palette layout, color mixing, glazes, and brush techniques (including wet-into-wet and wet-on-dry methods).

The Blue Ridge Potters Guild presents a workshop by Ellen Shankin, a 16 Hands Floyd, VA potter. Ellen’s works are exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the U.S., and she has received much recognition along with many awards. Ellen’s work has appeared in several publications including Robin Hopper’s book Functional Pottery and also in Kevin Houch’s American Contemporary Ceramics. She has been making pots everyday for the past 35 years with the focus of her work being functional pots. Touch-a-Truck Wheels, Wings and Water

Last year my family experienced our first full summer living in the Roanoke Valley. We originally hail from Florida, where summers are usually spent either gleaning in front of an AC unit or dunked under whatever water source you can find. However, here in the valley the summer didn’t seem nearly as oppressive. We were excited by the wide variety of fun festivals and events that my family could participate in for free. When I heard from a local insider that Roanoke County’s Touch-A-Truck was one of the area’s true gems, we made it a point to attend.

We had some great times that Saturday, starting what I’m certain will be a new family tradition for the last weekend in July. Here are a few tips from what I learned as a Touch-A-Truck newbie. One of the first pointers that I could give you is to bring cash. Even though this event is free there will be vendors onsite selling all sorts of yummy treats. In the summer heat, there’s no way you want to be the mom who says “sorry kids, I forgot my wallet at home, no slushies for you today!” Sad faces will surely happen. Another important tip is to get there early. The trucks and other awesome vehicles in attendance are donating their time, and there’s a lot here to see. Don’t wait for the last hour thinking you’ll miss the traffic, because you’ll miss out on some of the fun. On a brighter note, I learned that there are some very awesome places to visit, even if you do end up coming only for the last 30 minutes. Some of the few my children found to be top notch (in no particular order):

Roanoke County’s most popular event returns to Green Hill Park on Saturday, July 28th!

The Crane Truck: My kids got the chance to see one of the big fancy cranes up close and personal. They even climbed in the front seat and honked the horn. What a rush! The Sling Shot Truck (only for the bravest of kiddos): Your kids will have the opportunity to sling shot across a safe distance and experience the awesome ingenuity that comes when a man thinks “now what else can I do with my truck besides have the kids honk the horns”. Fireman’s Foam (my kids called it the bubble zone): Oh what a party!! A soft vinyl fence keeps the kids safe while they jump around and blow the suds all over each other. Although I wanted to join in and lose myself in the bubbles; my sweet kids only wanted a little handful, because otherwise they would get “duurty”. The Rinse Off Station: This was a blast to see everyone sloshing around trying to avoid the fire fighters accurate but gentle aim of their water hose. Don’t worry moms, it’s not the super-charged spray. Just avoid laughing too loud, or their water aim may turn on you instead of those cute little kids. The Refrigerated Truck: A MUST SEE! This was one of my family’s favorite attractions at Touch-a-Truck. Last year’s event was extremely hot, so our tour of the cooler truck was especialy refreshing. Personally I went through that truck at least three times. Whatever your family finds to do at Touch-A-Truck it will definitely be a hit with boys and girls alike. That same reliable source says that this year they are hoping to have 200 vehicles there...wheels, wings and water...not just trucks. Mark your calendars and set aside the sunscreen because this year’s TouchA-Truck event is sure to be AMAZING!

Sun &Know Water Safety Before You Swim By Laura Markowski of

arm weather is here and before we know it kids will be out of school and ready for a fun-filled summer. This usually entails fun in the sun and in the water. But all that fun can lead to dangerous situations. Do yourself a favor this summer and take steps to protect your kids as much as possible. We all know bumps and bruises are inevitable, but being proactive can help keep your child from being seriously injured. Sun Safety “First, remember sun safety is never out of season,” said Jill Lucas Drakeford, a Carilion Clinic community health educator. “Your children can get sunburned at any time of the year, but especially during the summer when families tend to go on more picnics, take trips to the pool or beach, or play in the park.” The importance of sun safety has become clear over the past 20 years, with studies showing that excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer later in life. Harmful rays can also cause eye problems, weaken your immune system, and lead to wrinkles. One way you can help promote sun safety in your home is to lead by example. Be serious about sunscreen. If you wear it, chances are your kids will too. They’ll get into the habit of thinking about applying it before they head outside. Any time your child spends extended time outdoors, they should be wearing sunscreen. “Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes,” Drakeford said. When you buy sunscreen, make sure it has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more. SPF represents the degree to which a sunscreen can protect the skin from sunburn. “Broad spectrum” and “SPF 15” (or higher) not only protect against sunburn, but if used as directed with other sun protection measures, can reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. “Also look for sunscreen that is water resistant, which means it will last on skin longer, even if it gets wet,” Drakeford said. “Regardless of SPF, sunscreen needs to be reapplied at least every two hours or more frequently if sweating or jumping in and out of water.”

Before you head to Splash Valley, make sure you know these ways to keep your kids safe.

Sunscreen is easy, but it doesn’t protect your child’s skin completely. Try combining sunscreen with other options to prevent sun damage. “Sunburn can take six to 48 hours to develop, so you may not realize your skin or your child’s skin is burned until its too late,” Drakeford said. Water Safety As we all know, trips to the pool or beach are popular during the hot summer months. But water fun can become scary if you’re not prepared. Beyond protecting your kids from the sun’s harmful rays, make sure you are informed about water safety. In any water situation, make sure children are always supervised. Did you know drowning is one of the leading causes of death for kids? Approximately 400 children age 14 and younger drown each year in pools and spas, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. And home swimming pools are the most common place for children younger than 5 to drown. While the statistics are scary to think about, there are ways you can hopefully help prevent a tragedy. When it comes to supervising, don’t be distracted. This means taking a break from your summer reading, talking or texting on your phone, or socializing with other parents by the pool. Your kids need your full attention. It’s also a good idea to enroll your child in swimming lessons after age 4. “Typically, age 4 is when kids are likely to practice and retain information, like treading water, floating, and staying close to the shore or pool’s edge,” Drakeford said. When it comes to open water (i.e., lakes, oceans, rivers) there are different safety concerns than at pools. Children need to be aware in open water there can be uneven surfaces, currents, undertow, and changing weather. As a parent, be proactive. Learn infant and child CPR, actively supervise your kids when playing or around water, and make sure they are always wearing sunscreen. Your children only get one chance to be kids—help them stay safe and live healthy.

Green Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-toSwim, Preschool and Parent-Child swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

Level IV Lessons

This is your chance to push yourself and really enhance your swimming skills. To participate in this class you must be able to jump into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing pattern. Focus at this level is on performing strokes efficiently to increase your endurance. Upon completion of this class participants will develop butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall. Camp Roanoke Discovery

Ages 5-11. Calling all campers entering Kindergarten through 5th grades who are looking for an outdoor adventure based day camp experience. Participants will be introduced to a wide range of activities that include: archery (ages 7 and up), arts and crafts, field games, leadership development, rock wall climbing, hiking, creeking, special events, a weekly field trip and much more! Included in the costs are a morning and afternoon snack, a delicious hot lunch and field trip fees. Each week will also include a trip to Splash Valley Water Park! Green Ridge Full Day Summer Camp

Ages 5-11. Green Ridge Recreation Center’s most popular summer day camp! Your child will spend the summer or just a couple weeks (10 to choose from) with us enjoying all that Green Ridge and the Roanoke Valley has to offer. Your camper’s week will be filled with arts, crafts, sports, games, swimming at Splash Valley and the indoor pool, field trips and more. They are sure not to get bored! All activities and two daily snacks are included in the weekly fee. Campers must pack a daily lunch, swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes. A $25 per week deposit is due at time of registration and ther emaining balance will be scheduled through automatic draft of your bank card. Green Ridge members receive an additional $10 discount per week.

Ages 5-11. Need something fun for your kid this summer yet don’t quite need full day camp care for you child? If so, our NEW half day version of Green Ridge Summer Day Camp is perfect for you! Energetic, experienced staff will lead children in a summer of F-U-N! Archery Camp Tennis Camps

Ages 8-14. Roanoke County’s archery program is designed to open the world of archery to children in a safe and fun environment. Stormwater Management Update Summer 2012

The Roanoke County Stormwater Division is committed to improving water quality and reducing impacts from flooding by enhancing the stormwater management facility maintenance and inspection program. In the past year, Roanoke County has held stormwater public meetings in all five of the magisterial districts. These meetings were intended to engage Homeowners Associations responsible for stormwater management facilities in a conversation regarding: • Why we need Stormwater Management and who benefits from it; • Who contributes to stormwater runoff; • How the facilities should be maintained; and, • Who is responsible for maintenance and inspection of these facilities. Approximately 118 people attended these meetings and a wide variety of comments and concerns were raised. These comments and concerns will be presented to the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors at a Stormwater Management Work session in the near future.

Glade Creek at Vinyard Park Water Quality Improvement Project

Roanoke County reestablished and stabilized the slope to prevent future erosion.

Roanoke County Departments of Community Development and Parks, Recreation, and Tourism have partnered with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to develop a plan to restore and enhance Glade Creek through Vinyard Park. Phase I of the project consisted of a conceptual design plan for improvements and was paid for in part by a DCR Water Quality Impact Fund (WQIF) Grant awarded to Roanoke County to improve water quality in the Glade Creek watershed. The proposed conceptual design includes: enhanced riparian buffers, a limited mow buffer, stabilizing failing stream banks, reconnecting a portion of the floodplain in the park, and the installation of in-stream structures to protect banks and create habitat for fish and invertebrates. One of the critical issues at the park was the failing stream bank shown in the pictures to the left. This stream bank is located adjacent to several athletic fields and presented not only an erosion and water quality issue but also a safety hazard for all park users. Repair of this area was an emergency project that Roanoke County completed separate from the WQIF Grant. Roanoke County chose to immediately install articulated concrete block mats and turf reinforcement matting to stabilize the stream bank and prevent further erosion and bank failure in this area. Roanoke County is currently working with Trout Unlimited, Orvis, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Environmental Services and Consulting to explore opportunities for future grant funding to implement the practices outlined in the concept plan to improve water quality in the Glade Creek Watershed.

Measuring Your Exercise Intensity

hysical activity is defined as any form of exercise or movement that the body uses energy. Some examples of physical activity include household chores, walking, and gardening. Exercise is a type of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and the goal is to improve health. Some examples of exercise include brisk walking, jogging, running, biking, resistance training, and dancing. Research shows that regular exercise has the following benefits: • Decreases the chance of premature death • Lowers the risk of developing certain diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and osteoporosis • Management of certain chronic conditions, such as arthritis • Lowers risk factors for disease, such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol • Increases aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility • Improves ability to better perform activities of daily living • Improves mental health, such as depression and cognitive ability Some activity is better than no activity but in order to receive the maximum health benefits adults should incorporate regular exercise as well as daily physical activity into their lifestyle. In 2008, the US Department of Health and Human Services developed physical activity guidelines for adults:

• For substantial health benefits adults should participate in at least 150 minutes or two and half hours of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise per week. • Cardiovascular exercise should be performed at least three days per week, preferably most days, for at least 30 minutes per day. Exercise can also be broken into short segments throughout the day. • Adults should also do moderate intensity resistance training for large muscle groups at least two nonconsecutive days per week. • Adults should do flexibility training at least three times per week. Exercise in older adults is essential for prevention and management of chronic diseases. Regular exercise will also allow the older adult to perform activities of daily living. Older adults with chronic conditions should consult a physician before beginning a new exercise program. If an older adult cannot participate in the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week they should exercise as long and as intense as their fitness level and condi-

tions allow. Starting slowly and building gradually will help to keep them safe by decreasing chance of injury.

Exercise is broken down into four categories including aerobic or cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance or resistance training, flexibility training, and balance training. Cardiovascular exercise is any rhythmic activity; such as walking, biking, and running; that use large muscle groups for a sustained period of time and increases the heart rate to above resting rate. During resistance training the muscles work against an applied weight. Muscles are moved through multiple repetitions with a weight or other resistive force. Weight machines, free weights, resistance bands, body weight, and anything that is weighted can be used to perform resistance training. Flexibility training is define as moving the body through a normal range of motion and holding. Older adults benefit greatly exercise that stretch the lower back, hamstrings, hips, as well as muscles of the upper body. Older adults also benefit greatly from balance training at least three times per week because of heightened risk of falling. Effective balance exercises include standing from a seated position, backward walking, toe walking, heel walking, tai chi, standing on one foot, and balancing on an unstable surface. s summer is drawing ever closer, my family and I have been scouring the sports isles looking for something fun and outdoorsy to do. My kids were quickly drawn to the toy isles, but after we pulled them away from the water guns and camping gear they were not too enthused about their sports op tions. My son had played soccer before, but I wanted him to try something new. My daughter was up for anything that looked girly, and by girly I mean pink or sized just right for her little hands. My husband and I couldn’t get them really interested in anything we found, so we left empty handed. However, on a recent e-shopping trip I found some really interesting changes in the tennis section. A brand new format has been introduced for kids. It’s amazing what they have done. So amazing in fact, that I needed to found out what this new tennis format was all about. My questions led me to Rob Issem; a local UTSA representative who oversees all tournaments in the state of Virginia and is also a national coach trainer. He is very passionate about the opportunities today’s youth have to get involved in the sport. Ten and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. Normally, kids learn to play baseball by first playing T-ball; they use shorter, lighter bats and larger, softer balls. Kids learning to play basketball shoot bas kets with kid-sized balls on lowered backboards, and they learn to play soccer on smaller fields with smaller goals. This progressive learning facilitates a great understanding of the sport and a development of skills that allows children to play as adults and be successful at it.

Did you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they needed to compete in organized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional program targeted to preschool and Kindergarten aged boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervision of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work together with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.

NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick Competition

Young football fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism hosts the NFL Pepsi, Punt Pass and Kick competition. The competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. The top finishers from each age group at the Local competition will advance to a Sectional competition. Each participant must register at www.NFLPPK.com web site and present a copy of the participant’s birth certificate during check in. This copy will be kept by the Parks and Recreation Department. The competition is FREE and open to boys and girls who will be put in different classifications based on age. Age classification is as of December 31, of current year. t’s a bright and sunny day outside, and what are your kids doing? Maybe they are like many of the other kids in this nation who are stuck on their couches, eyes glued to the TV screen. Summer should be about fun things outside, exploring their world, and connecting with something other than a gaming website. We have one the greatest outdoor living environments in the country. People travel from all over the world to see and explore our vast and beautiful valley. I think it’s time we showed our kids what summer really means. Get them off the couch and out of the house and let’s do something fun!

You may be asking, “how do I get my kids out the front door without bribing them?” Simple, get them excited about what’s going on just outside their front door. They won’t have to go far before they find something living, breathing and growing. The disconnect our youth have today with the outside world is staggering. Studies have shown that kids can recognize hundreds of corporate logos by a very early age, but can’t name ten species of plants or animals in their own backyard. What kind of relationship can our kids have with their world if they can’t event name a few plants or animals that are local to us, right here in the Roanoke Valley? That’s where the Get To Know Program comes in.

Get to Know Program was created by internationally known environmentalist Robert Bateman, in an effort to foster connections between young people and nature. And a key part of getting kids interested in the environment is encouraging them to get outside, and learn the names and characteristics of the wildlife around them. “What is going to happen to the natural world if the next generation doesn’t care for it?” says Bateman. “We need to get back to the point where kids want to spend their free time outdoors with their friends, exploring nature.”

Cam p R o a no ke 2012 Season Camp Roanoke is nestled within 700 acres of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in western Roanoke County, conveniently located just off Interstate 81 exit 132. Since 1925, Camp Roanoke’s programs have shaped the character and lives of thousands of youth and adults. Participants learn to embrace many environmental and cultural values while at camp, from the stewardship principles of “leave no trace” to self-confidence and esteem building ideals from “Character Counts.” These concepts are incorporated into the activities, special events and daily routine of camp life. Focusing on character helps campers develop both emotionally and socially by promoting respect for diversity, personal and peer responsibility, and the ability to fail or succeed in an encouraging environment. Our full-time staff members are graduates of universities and colleges with accredited outdoor recreation programs. Additionally, staff members are certified Wilderness First Responders, and have extensive experience in working with children and youth in outdoor settings. Our food services are managed by a ServSafe certified camp food service professional. Camp counselors have completed an intensive 14-day training program which includes First Aid/CPR/AED Training, defensive driving, conflict management, group dynamics, supervision roles, etc. Health care professionals meet with each child and family at check-in to discuss each camper’s individual needs. Staff members also administer medications, monitor special diets, and apply first aid during the camp session. Last Family Vacation Reflections On Childhood By Isaac Anthony

he road trip alone was worth it. Mom explained the historical significance of every mountain we encountered, my sister and I begged to stop at every tourist trap we passed, and Dad drove along in patient silence until we reached our cabin that night. We had not been on vacation as a family in many years. My eldest three siblings were already grown with families of their own, so it was only the four of us this time, and it was one of the last years we would be able to go away together so freely. Within a few years my sister would be married and I would be at college, and the opportunity to travel as a family would be gone.

The sun was just beginning to set beyond the trees, the cool night air falling gently around our campsite. Hundreds of fireflies danced in the woods nearby. We all seemed to recognize how fleeting the moment was as we sat around the campfire we had built. Dad poking at the smoldering logs, our fingers sticky with the gooey sweetness of toasted marshmallows. We began to invent silly games to amuse ourselves, singing songs and telling jokes, laughing until we fell off our wooden benches. We had not interacted with such directness in what seemed like ages; no television elevated on the wall inviting our gazes and silence, no work or school the next morning to prepare for, no laundry to gather and wash. For this most rare of occasions, it was only us, looking at each other in the eyes, connecting in a simple and pure way. We carried on well into the night, at which point we finally forced ourselves to go inside for the sake of our less animated neighbors in the cabin next door.

As the years went by, our family changed as we thought it would, with college graduations, career shifts, marriages, and grandchildren. We never made it on another family vacation like our trip to the mountains, but that fact has only made us more thankful that we took the time when we could, that we made being together that last summer a priority, and that we looked each other in the eyes and connected in ways so plain and yet so profound that the trip remains in our hearts, a monument to our love and bond as a family. Now that I have children of my own, I often think back to my last childhood vacation. When you’re away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, interactions with family members are different and somehow more meaningful. I want my children to be able to fondly remember these special moments together. Whether it’s a trip to the mountains, an ocean side getaway, or even a single day excursion to an amusement park, these are memories that will last a lifetime. That’s why despite difficult economic times, my family makes it a point to always leave aside a little spending money for an annual vacation, whatever that destination might be. Here in Roanoke we are fortunate to live within a day’s drive of several tourist destinations. You don’t have to spend a fortune in gas to take a weekend trip to Washington DC, Williamsburg or Pigeon Forge. This year my family will be trying something new, by signing up for an amusement park trip with Roanoke County Parks. The tickets are included, we don’t have to pay for parking, and best of all we don’t have to drive. That means there ‘s more time for my family to relax, socialize and strengthen our relationship bonds in a way that only a vacation can.

The Reynolds Homestead is the birthplace and boyhood home of tobacco manufacturer R.J. Reynolds. Blandwood Mansion

Blandwood Mansion, home of former North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead is a treasure of architectural and historical significance located in the heart of downtown Greensboro. The original two story farmhouse was constructed on the site in 1795, before the founding of Greensboro (1808), and was expanded in the 1820’s. In 1844, architect Alexander Jackson Davis designed this Italian style villa for Governor Morehead. It’s tall central tower and stucco walls is considered the oldest standing example of Italian architecture in the United States. Docents will lead your guided walking tour that does involve stairs. Please wear comfortable shoes. Also, included is a tour of Replacements, Ltd. with the world’s largest selection of china, stoneware, crystal, glassware, silver, stainless, and collectibles. Bluefield, West Virginia is home to this community theatre which was constructed in 1924. This community theatre group has been performing for the past 45 years and is offering a private performance of the award winning play, The Passing of Pearl. The play is set in a diner in Memphis in the 1980’s and tells the story of a brash, outspoken and hilarious waitress trying, along with her good friend and colleague Daphne, to pick up the pieces and carry on after the death of Pearl, the kindhearted old lady who owned the diner. A catered buffet lunch at the Theatre is included. Also included is a guided tour of The Baldwin House which housed the secret office of the Baldwin Felts Detective Agency. The agency became known for crime-busting after it successfully tracked down members of the Allen family wanted in a shootout in 1912 at the Courthouse in Hillsville. They are best known for their violent confrontations with labor union members in such places as the Pocohantas Coal Field region. The House still has the Jail cell used by the agency. The Dayton area was first settled in the mid 1740s because of its fertile land and an abundance of fresh spring water. By the 1780s, Mennonite families began settling in this lush, fertile valley and added much to the cultural make-up of Dayton. Your day begins at the Shenandoah Valley Produce Auction, a must see operation that is the largest wholesale auction of its type in Virginia. The auction provides a central location for area growers to sell their harvest in bulk from early spring to late autumn. Your next stop is the Heritage Museum and Cromer -Trumbo House in Dayton. The museum owned by the historical society includes folk art and Civil War exhibits including the ‘Invincible Spirit,’ a compelling exhibit spanning the history of the Shenandoah Valley. The Cromer-Trumbo house, built in the early 1800’s houses a unique collection of Victorian and early twentieth century household items and decorative arts. Dayton is home to several historical structures which will be narrated from the bus by a step on guide with a stop at the Daniel Harrison house. Built in 1749, this stone structure, also known as Fort Harrison served as a place of refuge for residents of the area fleeing from the marauding Indians during the 1750’s. Picture this: a cool fall morning, birds singing, mist rising off of the lake...and fish jumping into your boat! Join this fishing trip to Douthat lake, a 50-acre fee fishing lake stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout twice a week during the fee season. The daily creel limit is six trout with a seven inch minimum. One pole per person is allowed with each person having a separate stringer. You do need a valid Virginia fishing license that may be purchased at the camp store. Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Old Salem is one of the most authentic living history attractions in the United States. Founded in 1766 by a group of Moravian missionaries the town’s restored and reconstructed buildings present visitors with a view of Moravian life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Your self guided walking tour includes several historic structures staffed by costumed interpreters which include skilled blacksmiths, cobblers, gunsmiths, bakers and carpenters, actually practicing their trades while interacting with visitors. Approximately 70% of the buildings in the historic district are original, making this a truly unique living history museum. Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to the 1800’s Tannenberg Organ. This is the largest organ in existence built by Moravian builder David Tannenberg and your experience includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the hand pumped bellows, and a performance by a professional organist. What are Barn Quilts? They are quilt patterns painted on wooden panels throughout the region. Each block displays a large vibrantly-colored patchwork with its own unique design. We’ll take you to Monroe County, West Virginia to see some beautiful scenery, and famous barns such as Turkey Tracks, Paddle Wheel, Dresden Plate and Planes & Clouds but some beautiful scenery as well. Dedicated Service Parks Commission Members Retire By Scott Ramsburg

oanoke County’s parks department has changed a lot in the past twenty four years. In that time we’ve added four hundred acres of parkland, thirty one new athletic fields, seven new parks, three community centers, seven miles of greenways and trails, and a summer camp. One thing that hasn’t changed has been the dedicated service of Roger Falls and Paul Bailey. Roger and Paul have both served on Roanoke County’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Advisory Commission since 1988, and will retire from service this June. Never heard of the commission? This group is appointed by the Board of Supervisors, and works behind the scenes to provide input on the department’s decision making. “They’re a sounding board for what our local citizens want in recreation services,” says Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Doug Blount. “It’s a value to the citizens to have members of the community involved in the process and it’s a value to us as they bring a unique outside perspective to the table and remind us why we do what we do.” Paul Bailey, who celebrates his 86th birthday in June, first got involved with the department in the early 1980’s as a youth sports coach and parent of two participants. “It’s important for kids to be involved in athletics because it’s good for them healthwise,” says Paul. “Plus, it gives them a chance to be a member of a team and work together with other kids. That’s important in bringing them up in life.” Paul has been instrumental in pushing for improved athletics facilities within the County, especially in the Cave Spring region where he lives. Several times a week you can still find Paul walking the greenway at Garst Mill Park, or watching the youth play t-ball games on the fields he helped to create. Roger Falls represents the Vinton area, and has taken the lead in Roanoke County’s Capital Improvement Incentive Fund over the years. This is a grant program established in 1995 to encourage local organizations to make park improvements with up to a 50% funding match. Roger says he is most proud of his work with this

grant fund, saying “That’s what started me into this, looking for fund to help the County build things. We established the fund to help our public facilities grow. What the County has put in versus what they received, it has been worth millions of dollars.” Roger believes that over the past two and a half decades of growth and change, Roanoke County’s parks have continued to improve life in the valley. “You want to feel safe that your kids can play someplace without having to stand over them. You want a good experience for them in life. Quality of life is also something companies look at before moving into an area. The amenities Roanoke County has are those that companies want to see. I’ve been a business owner, worked other places and traveled a lot, but I still like this area better than anywhere else.” Former Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Pete Haislip recounts that Roger and Paul were a valuable asset to the community through their commission service, saying “they were always two of the members I could count on they had history and institutional knowledge that was crucial to helping us grow to the department we are today. We couldn’t have done so much without their knowledge, connections to the community and their leadership. Even though their service to Parks, Recreation and Tourism is coming to an end, both men plan to continue giving back to the community. Paul Bailey survived one of the Roanoke area’s first bypass heart surgeries in 1982, and plans to continue volunteering at Carilion’s Memorial Hospital where he has greeted patients and counseled fellow bypass recipients for the past twenty-nine years. Roger also says he will never stop looking for opportunities to serve. “I think you have to give back. Be thankful for what you have. Be a good family person for kids in the future. It’s not always what you can do for me, It’s about your neighbor, what you can do for him. I feel like that’s important.”

Program Registration Policies When — Summer registration begins online Saturday, June 2 for County Residents only; Monday, June 4 walk-in and phone for County Residents only; and Wednesday, June 6 for non-county residents. Registration will be taken between 8 AM-5 PM each work day at all offices and recreation centers. You can also register during evenings and weekends at selected recreation centers, and online at any time.

Refunds — In the event Roanoke County cancels the class, you may elect to receive a refund within 3 weeks. Refunds will not be given after the first session of the class or after the deadline date for trips, tours and special events, unless your place can be filled.
