Stone Sculpture Art You Have to Touch to Believe

By Scott Ramsburg

G

ail Geer was sitting in church 27 years ago, when a little old lady turned to her and said, “Would you like to take a class at Virginia Western? My daughter is teaching.” Not knowing entirely what the class was about, Gail said yes. Now her family calls it divine intervention. The class was about stone sculpture, one of the oldest forms of artwork known to humanity. All these years later, Gail still works as a professional stone sculpture artist and instructor. She calls it the best retirement job she could dream of. “I can do it all the daylight hours I want,” says Gail. “In the evening I can watch movies and sand the surface of my sculptures, which gives me exercise. I have wonderful strength for lifting things. Sculpting really keeps your body moving and your mind creating!” Sculpting comes with its fair share of challenges. For Gail, it’s a driveway full of six tons of rocks that once got her turned in to the zoning commission (She was cleared of any violations). For first time sculptors, the challenge comes in realizing how time consuming the craft can be. Gail says that the most she can make is about four pieces of sculpture per month.

Sculptor Gail Geer teaches a high-school class how to craft works of art from stone.

faster to create when you can see the whole thing finished in your mind before you start. Those are always the ones that sell first, because it’s there and you just let it go. The enthusiasm and emotion that goes into the sculpture makes the difference.” Pierrette Williams was initially intimidated when she signed up for a class with Gail, but she quickly learned to love the art form. “I already painted with oil and acrylic,” said Pierrette. “But I was really interested in touching a three dimensional work. I loved the fact you could get a stone and work on it, and have different shapes coming out. It’s a different feeling than painting. The stone gets so beautiful when you polish it.” The sense of touch is what makes stone sculpture such a unique medium. You can go to a museum and see a painting, but you can’t touch it. Even if you did, it wouldn’t change the impact of the work. Gail Geer says she always hated painting because she could never get to the other side of the painting. Sculpture, she says, is different.

Then there’s the question of how to get started. Seeing a blank piece of rock in front of you can be intimidating. According to Gail, the trick is to let the stone help you decide what to create.

“When you touch something it’s part of you. The sensation of touch passes the feeling I had when I created it on to you. In an emotional sense it comes through. If you look at a good sculpture, you just want to touch it. That’s the best compliment you can give to a sculptor.”

“Most of the time I see things in the stone. I put it on my workbench, and I see a bear or a figure. Sometimes I will leave it on my desk for weeks before deciding what to do with it. I’ve found it’s

Who Will You Be? A Doctor, A Lawyer, An Indian Chief...

By Wendi Schultz

O

.K. so maybe not an Indian Chief…but how about Policeman, Pilot, Fire Chief? Touch A Truck, Wheels, Wings and Water can make all that and more possible. Come on out to Roanoke County’s Green Hill Park on Saturday July 27 from 10:00AM until 3:00PM and explore the wonderful world of all things moveable.

Touch-a-Truck is celebrating five years at Green Hill Park, and this time we expect to have 200 vehicles!

We anticipate having 200 vehicles of every possible dimension, configuration, color, height, weight, description and then some. Don’t miss this unique opportunity at Roanoke County’s Fifth Annual Touch A Truck event on Saturday July 27 at Roanoke County’s Green Hill Park. The day can best be summed up by one past attendee who said, “Great Show, EVERYONE loved it!”

Imagine being in the driver’s seat of a Life-Guard Helicopter, a SWAT armored vehicle or a super stock car or an elegant Porsche... Now imagine yourself being able to do this when you’re not even five years old or better yet being quite a bit older and having to use the excuse that you just had to show your five year old son or daughter that it really wasn’t scary at all. What a great excuse to be a “big” kid again. Join us for a memorable day sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face as well as the perfect opportunity to build memories with those closest to you. The event is FREE and well worth every bit of its weight in gold. Not only can you get up, close and personal and climb all over and get into and out of all these very cool vehicles but you can also enjoy a break at one on our food vendor locations, a ”dip” in the ever famous Fireman’s Foam, a look and feel with our Petting Zoo friends, an opportunity to be bedazzled by our on-site magician or better yet the bragging rights because you honked the biggest and the loudest horn more times than your friend was allowed to! Remember while you’re there to take a moment to talk with the vehicle operators and drivers and owners so you can get an inside glimpse of what it’s really like to be so privileged as to actually be able to be “in the driver’s seat” each day. Imagine all the tales they can tell and the adventures they have had!

Splash Into Summer Celebrating Four Years of Fun

Mark your calendars for May 24, the first day of the Splash Valley season.

By Scott Ramsburg

s the parent of a four year old, it’s hard to imagine what summers would be like without Splash Valley.

A

edge of the pool, to more recent trips that have found us cruising down the current river together. Now, he’ll finally be old enough to truly enjoy the aquatic playground.

In our pre-child days, my wife and I would spend our summer weekends traveling to distant amusement parks, hiking spots or overnight retreats. That’s a lot harder to do with a kid in tow. Splash Valley has been a blessing because it’s fun, affordable and close to home. We get all the excitement of a trip to the beach, without the agony of five hours in a car.

This year there are even more reasons for my family to come to Splash Valley, with weekly events like Munchie Mondays and Five Dollar Wednesdays. We can also enjoy four new Friday evening events that add a little extra fun to the experience without adding to the cost of admission.

The water park has also been valuable when guests come in from out of town. Not too long ago we would drive our visitors to the top of Mill Mountain, enjoy the view and ask ourselves, “now what do we do?” Along with a burgeoning arts scene and several other new attractions, Splash Valley has helped turn the region into a place that my friends and relatives look forward to visiting. On a more personal level, it’s been exciting to watch our son experience the water park in new ways every year – from the early visits where he would splash around in the tiny fountains near the

24

Splash Valley is a unique attraction because it will grow with my child. Before too long he’ll be old enough to have a birthday party at the park, plunge down two 34-foot high water slides, and eventually come alone with his friends. For now, I’m looking forward to another exciting season of family fun at Splash Valley Water Park. It may seem strange to compare my child to a summer attraction, but I can think of one way that they have a lot in common... The first three years were amazing, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store in year four.

Green Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Preschool and ParentChild swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or canceled due to lack of enrollment.

Parental participation is required for Baby Drops, Tiny Bubbles and Little Splashes classes.

Add-On Program For Themed Camps

Still need FULL-day enrichment for your child? Throughout the following pages of this guide, you’ll find half-day themed camps designed to meet a variety of interests! Our new “Add-On Program For Themed Camps” at Green Ridge Recreation Center allows your child to participate in Green Ridge Summer Day Camp in the morning and afternoon, but still attend the Themed Camp of their choice from 1pm to 4pm. This allows working parents the perfect option to add variety to your child’s summer plans! You must register for BOTH the themed camp and the addon listed below. Look for the sun icon shown above to indicate which camps can be super sized. Please note that children must have completed a year of Kindergarten in order to take part in this experience. This add-on is not eligible for any extra discounts like early bird or members and is only available for theme camps located at Green Ridge. For more information, please call (540) 777-6300.

New Equipment Makes Your Workout Interactive!

By Julie Morris, D.H.Ed., M.S., ACSM

G

reen Ridge Recreation Center is excited to be adding new cardiovascular equipment and two pieces of flexibility equipment to the upstairs Wellness Center over the next few months. This new equipment will offer added benefits and increased options to maximize workouts. Equipment will also include the latest technology. Expect to see new treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, a Jacobs Ladder, and two flexibility machines. Green Ridge will also receive more of our popular machines such as the Free Motion Incline Trainers and Cybex Arc Trainers. With a touch, tablet-like screen members and guests will have the ability to surf the internet, update Facebook and Twitter accounts, access the contents of their iPhone, iPod, or other multimedia USB devices, play games, or watch TV. The special iPod and iPhone docking station allows users to charge their device, listen to music, watch videos, or record workouts. The new Technogym Run treadmill offers a safer, more comfortable workout. The platform is structured and made of material that provides cushioning to the feet, which reduces pain in the joints and muscles of the feet and knees. The placement of the screen is biomechanically designed to place the user in proper alignment while reducing movement of the head and eyes. This treadmill can also be used for those who want to workout at higher intensities with capabilities of 16+MPH and 18% incline. Green Ridge will also be getting two new Technogym machines that are in the elliptical family. The Crossover allows the user to obtain a more lateral motion as well as the traditional movement that is offered by other ellipticals. The Vario allows the user to perform three different movements in one machine: step, elliptical, or a combination without stopping the machine. The step mimics a stair type motion, the elliptical motion is very similar to walking, and the Vario movement is like someone who is running at a faster pace.

38

After a delay of several months, we’re excited to announce that new equipment is finally on the way to Green Ridge Recreation Center.

Register online www.RoanokeCountyParks.com • Register by phone 540.772.PLAY

The new Technogym Recline Recumbent Bike offers a step through design that is easier to access for users with lower mobility. A reclining backseat is more comfortable for users of all sizes. Flexibility is defined as the body’s ability to move the muscles and joints through a full range of motion (ROM) without pain. The Technogym Anterior (front of the body) and Posterior (back of the body) aids in taking these muscles and joints through a full ROM, therefore improving one’s flexibility. The machines are unique in the fact that they provide very informative feedback to the user allowing them to track their progress. Green Ridge will also be getting a Jacobs Ladder, which was made popular by the Biggest Loser TV show. The Jacobs Ladder is non-motorized treadmill climber with ladder-like rungs. This self paced cardio machine uses low impact, high range of motion exercises that work both the lower and upper body. .

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Be a Good Sport Playing With a Positive Attitude

By Maureen Wilson

Athletics

I

f you have ever attended a sporting event you have seen it. That overly loud parent shouting at the umpire about a bad call; the coach stomping up and down on the sideline of a basketball game when his player turns the ball over; the opposing team’s dugout cheering loudly when a player swings and misses wildly at a pitch to strike out. You may be envisioning a high school or professional game, but more and more these types of actions are creeping into youth sports programs across the country. Unfortunately, Roanoke County’s athletics programs are trending in this direction. The Roanoke County’s youth sports program features over 6,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 3,000 games and 15,000 practices during the course of the year. Roanoke County Athletics Supervisor Allen Hayes says, “With a program of this size, even if we have unsportsmanlike actions in only 1% of our activities - which is a very good success rate - the sheer size of our program means that we are going to have dozens of incidents across the County. Our desire is to get that number as close to zero as possible.” The goal of the Athletics Division is to provide a fun, safe, positive and supportive atmosphere for all involved in the sporting contest. Due to the increase of unsportsmanlike conduct and actions by a minority at its youth sporting events, Roanoke County has developed a Zero Tolerance Policy towards this type of behavior. When asked why the policy was put in place, Hayes added, “The purpose of the policy is to clearly share the expectation level Roanoke County has for players, coaches and parents and the possible consequences for failing to meet them. We can understand the passion that our participants have for their sport, but unfortunately the line between competition and intensity is becoming too close.”

46

Roanoke County’s athletics department is working on new ways to improve sportsmanship throughout our leagues!

Roanoke County’s Zero Tolerance Policy gives examples of infractions that may lead to a suspension. “We needed a way to more clearly define unacceptable behaviors for our players, coaches and parents,” Hayes remarked. “With a few small changes, we can ensure that our sports leagues provide a positive and encouraging experience for youth.” You can view the entire Zero Tolerance Policy on the Athletics Divisions webpage at www.roanokecountyva.gov/athletics. In addition to the Zero Tolerance Policy, several other rule changes and program restructuring ideas are being considered in youth sports programs. According to Hayes, “We need to make sure that our program is a balance between competition and skill development. In your younger age groups, we want to focus more on skill development and transition to competition as players get older and more advanced. For example, our instructional basketball program has modified game rules and doesn’t keep score. That really sets a positive tone for the games, and one that we hope to transfer to older divisions through strategic changes to our programs.” In addition, the Athletics Division is also exploring the possibility of adding flag football divisions to its football program. “Flag football is seeing a tremendous growth across the country,” says Hayes. “With the increased awareness of safety concerns and concussions in youth sports, I see this program as having great potential in Roanoke County. It’s a great option for parents who want to expose and teach their child to the fundamentals of football without the intensity that comes with tackle program.” We hope you’ll keep an eye out for these good sportsmanship changes in the coming months. With your help, Roanoke County can continue to provide positive recreation opportunities for thousands of kids every year. These are changes that will positively impact our athletics programs, and provide a more enjoyable environment for players and spectators alike.

Quick Start Tennis

QuickStart Tennis is a new format to help children seven and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately - even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: $39 and includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned. Ages

Wetland Connections Building Trails & Community

A new boardwalk trail near the South County Library officially opens to the public on June 4th.

Outdoors

By Scott Ramsburg

E

ven before the South County Library was envisioned for its site on Merriman Road, park planners had conceptualized a boardwalk trail through the nearby wetland.

make up for the minimal environmental disturbance by purchasing a small amount of wetland credits from the Virginia Office of The Nature Conservancy.

“I think that one of the ideas all along was that if we could get citizens, visitors and school children walking on a trail through the wetland we would have some important environmental education opportunities,” said landscape architect, and project organizer Lon Williams. “The fact that we could build it on the same site as a library increased the opportunity for hands on learning for school children.”

On Tuesday, June 4 at 11:00am, Roanoke County officials will cut a ceremonial ribbon to open a new boardwalk. This trail system already connects the South County Library with the roundabout by Penn Forest Elementary School. By the end of the year, the Parks, Recreation and Tourism department hopes to complete the final piece of the project, an upland trail segment between the boardwalk and Starkey Park.

That opportunity came as the new library neared completion, and there was some additional funding remaining in the construction budget. County administration, including director of libraries Diana Rosapepe, thought it was a good fit.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Doug Blount believes that one of the most important aspects of the new trail is the sense of community it creates. “Libraries, schools and parks are government services that touch the lives almost every citizen,” says Blount. “The wetland trail project not only provides a physical link between all three, but also enhances the mission of each department in one key area where they overlap. This trail will give back to the community for generations to come, by helping youth gain a better appreciation of the natural world through good stewardship and environmental education. “

“We’ve been looking forward to the completion of the wetland trail,” said Rosapepe. “We see it as another form of education, one that gives us all a window on a fragile ecosystem and helps us to be both good neighbors and good stewards of this unique resource.” Good stewardship was kept top of mind during the entire construction process. The company selected to build the trail approached the project from top down. Their equipment actually sat on portions of the deck that had already been completed, and moved along the deck as they progressed. That means that there was very little disturbance to the wetland while building the trail. The boardwalk trail was approved by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, who granted permitting for the project. Roanoke County was able to

50

Nearby Penn Forest Elementary School students will almost certainly make good use of the educational opportunities provided by this project. According to principal Dr. Linda Wright, “The South County Wetland Trail provides a unique opportunity for students at Penn Forest to experience nature firsthand. Exploring the wetland habitat will encourage an understanding and appreciation for this ecosystem.” We encourage students and nature lovers to get out on the trail and explore, starting June 4th.

Women’s Adventure

Adult

“I realize that women’s adventure is not a rarity, a once-in-a-lifetime affair, or an accident. It’s a lifestyle. It’s the ‘play until you think you can play no more, and then keep playing until you truly cannot play anymore,’ lifestyle. It’s about planning adventure, preparing for it, making it happen, and enjoying it. It’s about letting yourself be silly or get serious in your active pursuits. It’s about being outside and doing what you can. It’s ultimately about owning it.” - Jennifer Olson, editor of Women’s Adventure Magazine.

Stormwater Management Update Upper Roanoke River TMDL Implementation Plan Kickoff

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) monitors lakes and streams annually for compliance with water quality standards. Waterways that do not meet standards are listed as impaired and a “pollutant diet” known as a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is established for the stream. Next, VDEQ develops an Implementation Plan, which is a road map to meeting the “pollutant diet” established by the TMDL to improve the quality of our water. In the County of Roanoke and Town of Vinton, there are 13 impaired streams, all of which flow into the Roanoke River. A majority of these streams are impaired due to bacteria and sediment. VDEQ is currently working on an Implementation Plan for the Upper Roanoke River and many of its tributaries. As a part of this process, they will conduct a series of public meetings to gather input on ways to reduce the sediment and bacteria loads to the impaired waterways. Input will focus on ways that residential, commercial, agricultural, and public lands can be improved to help manage these pollutants.

Tips for Packing a Summer First Aid Kit

Driving this summer? Don’t forget to pack a first aid kit.

By Amy Minnix, of

W

ith summer break starting, making sure your first-aid kit is fully stocked might not be the first thing on your mind, but taking a few extra minutes to look through it can be extremely helpful. So, before you run out the door to your next family gathering or vacation, make sure you are fully prepared for the accidents that may occur this summer. “Make sure you have one first-aid kit available for the home and one for the car,” said Edie Naughton, R.N., a Carilion Clinic community health educator. “This is the time of year when our children are more active outdoors and in sports, often away from home.” Know what to keep in your kit Keeping certain items on hand can ensure that your first-aid kit will be ready to go whenever you may need it.

Other helpful items would be a blue “baby bulb” for suction, disposable cold packs, hand sanitizer, cotton balls or swabs, a cup to measure doses of medicine, a thermometer, and tweezers to remove ticks or splinters. These should be checked regularly for expired or low items. The American College of Emergency Physicians recommends using a clear, plastic container that is easily visible and can hold everything needed. It is also good to have a first-aid manual on hand that explains how to use every item.

Always pack sunscreen SPF 15 or higher, insect repellent with DEET, and plenty of water to avoid heat-related illnesses. Baking soda is a great item to add for gatherings where you will be outside. Creating a paste of baking soda and water will neutralize the acid from a bee sting. Make sure you have important phone numbers, such as a pharmacy close to where you’re staying and the National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222). A list of allergies and medications should also be included with your travel kit. Safety starts at home Having a first-aid kit ready to go is a great tool, but the focus should be on prevention. “You cannot talk about first-aid kits and children without mentioning the most important item is prevention,” Naughton said. “An injury that was preventable is a leading cause of death in children.” Supervising children at play is a must when trying to keep your children from having accidents. Being aware of your surroundings and taking precautionary steps, like wearing a bike helmet, are also ways to decrease the likelihood of an accident.

Travel

Make sure that there are adhesive bandages in assorted sizes as well as bandages to wrap wrist, ankle, knee, and elbow injuries. You should have finger splints, eye shields, latex or non-latex gloves, sterile gauze pads, and adhesive tape. Antiseptic solution or wipes, antibiotic ointment, eyewash, calamine lotion for stings or poison ivy, and hydrocortisone cream for itching are also good items to include.

Tailor your kit to your destination In addition to your basic kit, it is a good idea to add items based on the area you are traveling to.

Now is a good time to teach your children about first-aid and being safe. Make sure your kids are familiar with each part of the kit but know to call on an adult for help when administering first-aid. These things can help ensure a safe and fun summer for everyone in your family. For more information on keeping your family safe, call Carilion Clinic at 800-422-8482.
