New this summer, we’re introducing individual season passes at Splash Valley! Now your family can enjoy frequent trips to one of the region’s best aquatics facilities without stretching your budget. We’ve also planned plenty of activities for the kids while school is out, with over 200 weeks of summer camp programs. See the center of this magazine for a complete guide, and register before spaces fill. Finally, mark your calendars for Saturday, July 26 as our popular Touch-a-Truck event returns to Green Hill Park for a sixth year. It’s FREE, and lots of fun for the whole family.

Building Confidence Green Ridge Welcomes New Manager

B

uilding confidence is what Scott Shiflett strives for. That’s what got him started lifting weights in his grandparents’ garage as a child, and it’s a goal he hopes to pass on to Green Ridge Recreation Center members and guests after a career of over 20 years in personal fitness. Scott joined us in March as Center Manager of Green Ridge, and according to Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Doug Blount, he’s already made a huge impact on operations here. “Scott brings a lot of knowledge in the area of recreation center management and wellness programs that will be beneficial to Green Ridge and all Roanoke County citizens. “ The new manager is no stranger to this part of Virginia. After graduating from Radford University in 1994, Scott held positions at fitness facilities in Galax, Harrisonburg, and Charlottesville before becoming Fitness Manager at Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center in Prince William County, where he’s spent the past 13 years. Scott has a passion for physical fitness, which he believes can be a great tool for strengthening personal resolve. He likens his mission to touch the lives of Green Ridge guests to the personal gratification he receives from working out. “The biggest thing we help do at a recreation center is build confidence,” says Scott. “If you can overcome what’s ahead of you, that weight in your hand or that bar on your back... It transcends a lot of different things. Each time you crush it, that confidence grows.” In his short time here, Scott Shiflett has been quick to recognize that Green Ridge is a special place. Much of the success of the facility he links to the staff. “They work diligently to make the magic happen for a lot of people,” he says. “They understand and see the impact of their work and how it improves people’s lives that come to the center. Staff know the value of this facility for the community, and help provide a great service at a reasonable cost.

6

Scott Shiflett joined our staff this spring as Green Ridge Recreation Center’s new manager.

It’s a beautiful building, and for this area to have it... that’s pretty spectacular.” According to Scott Shiflett, what are the top five things that make Green Ridge so unique? 1) Staff - They work hard to do the right thing 2) Variety - Of healthy family activities and entertainment options 3) Quality - Top notch equipment and program offerings 4) Cleanliness - Great overall maintenance and equipment upkeep 5) Results - The reason people keep coming back Getting results is also one of Scott’s top goals as center manager. “From the time they come in the door to the time they leave, I want to make sure they’ve had a good time, and I want to make sure people are getting results. “ Another part of getting results is treating people well. Over the past few months the new center manager has spent a considerable amount of time walking the floor and talking to both staff and guests. He has taken out the trash with the custodians, done landscaping, and even worked out on the machines as a Green Ridge member. Whether you’re taking a dip in the pool, shooting hoops, or building confidence in the wellness area, Scott Shiflett encourages guests to stop and chat with him. According to Assistant Director of Recreation David Weir, the managers easygoing attitude is one of his greatest strengths. “The things that make him immediately likable are his calm demeanor, his politeness, and his genuine interest in what you’re saying to him. He’s already made connections with both staff and customers that strengthen our operation and will help take Green Ridge to a new level.”

he region’s premier outdoor aquatics destination is back for our fifth season! We’ve loaded our calendar with five “funtastic friday nights” to give you even more reasons to splash into the fun. Beach Night: Friday, July 11 - Imagine you are on the beautiful Virginia Beaches shagging the night away with the music of The Tams, The Embers and Chairman of the Board. We will have the best of the beach music playing until 9:00pm with some shagging demonstrations. Practice your dance moves and impress us all. Rock & Roll Night: Friday, July 18 – Cast your vote for the music from the ‘70s or from the ‘80s. Help us decide which decade had the best music. So is it Duran Duran? Or The Allman Brothers? Poison or Bruce Springsteen? Come share your opinion with us. Dress like your favorite hair band member and enter our contest. Listen to fantastic music until 9:00pm. Purchase a great cheese steak from the Rock & Roll Diner food truck in the parking lot. Christmas In July: Friday, July 25 – Only 153 days until Christmas. Let’s get into the spirit just a little early. Some good old fashioned home cooking from the Home Town Cooking food truck will help get your taste buds in the Christmas spirit. We will have a DJ spinning tunes until 9:00pm and he may throw a Christmas Carol in there as well. Wear your ugly Christmas sweater and see if it will win you a prize. Aquatics

Let’s have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. Participants will learn beginning swimming strokes, breath holding, floating, and kicking - all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson each week that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments.

Now you’re really a swimmer! At this level, the swimmer should be very confident and comfortable in the water. They must be able to float on their back, rollover, and perform front float prior to the start of this class. Emphasis on coordination of breathing, arm strokes, and kicking in front crawl and back crawl. Dolphin kick, scissor kick and elementary backstroke are also introduced.

Level IV Lessons

This is your chance to push yourself and really enhance your swimming skills. To participate in this class you must be able to jump into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 15 yards with your face in the water and utilize a rhythmic breathing pattern. Focus at this level is on performing strokes efficiently to increase your endurance. Upon completion of this class participants will have been introduced to butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall. Ages

The Perfect Venue Tips On Selecting a Site For Your Wedding

S

o you’re engaged... Congratulations! No doubt you’ve already received thousands of messages of love and support from your family and friends. Are you also prepared for the inevitable questions of when and where?

ue during your scheduled wedding hours. If you’re getting married on a Saturday at 5pm than touring on a Tuesday at 9am may not give you the same look or feel as you will get the day of your wedding.

The question of where and when a wedding will take place are not always as easy to answer as you would think. Sometimes this seemingly harmless question can start the couple’s first wedding jitters argument. Gone are the days when a couple would select the one wedding venue in their hometown and then check that off their wedding to-do list. With today’s ever expanding wedding venue options, couples are faced with a wide range of choices. You can create a custom experience in a downtown loft, a picturesque country château, a museum, or any number of unique destinations. Time is of the essence when you’re booking a wedding, so here are a few things to keep in mind:

Still haven’t decided on a venue? This summer, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is adding Explore Park to your list of options. Our special events coordinator, Wendi Schultz, has been whipping around the valley getting things in order for several events already on the books. According to Wendi the new venue offers a truly unique location, without any hidden costs .

What kind of venue are you looking for? Romantic, Modern, Rustic… Do you want your wedding to be planned around your venue, or a venue to match your wedding style?

16

Roanoke County’s Explore Park is once again available for wedding rentals, with both indoor and outdoor options.

“Not only does Explore Park offer you a chance to have a unique wedding in a beautiful park, but we have over a dozen locations within our park alone to hold your event. In most cases, our reservations come with nearly 36 hours of allotted time for you and your guests.”

What do you want from your venue? Is it a full service venue that has everything on sight from chairs and tables to flower arrangers to an event planner, or are you looking for an option that allows you to shop around for custom services?

Explore Park also allows couples to choose their own wedding planner or caterer. Your options aren’t limited by anything! Plus, choose from indoor venues at the Mountain Union Church and Arthur Taubman Center, or any number of beautiful outdoor wedding sites. Wendi hopes her clients will use the entire park for all of their festivities…from the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony to the reception.

What are the logistics about the venue? While researching your perfect venue you will want to take note of how many guests it can hold. Is the venue accessible for all of your guests? Do they have a required list of vendors to work from? Are there any specific restrictions such as no bonfires or confetti?

So... you’ve decided on a venue! Last tip before signing anything, ask to see a full break down of the costs in an itemized fashion to show what is and isn’t included in the cost. Also, ask about their cancellation policy. Because life happens and you never know what may come between you and your perfect day.

Once you’ve got the basics covered, tour some of your favorite venues that match your criteria. Ask lots of questions and make sure you are truly happy with it. It’s also best to visit “the one” ven-

Finding your wedding venue will be the crucial piece to bringing your wedding day puzzle together. We hope that our Explore Park will make your list of options! If you’re looking for a tour or just additional information, contact Wendi Schultz at (540) 777-6326.

Progress Being Made at Explore Park

O

ur May 10th open house event marked the first time many trails at Explore Park have been open to the public in over five years. We’re excited about the progress so far, and believe that the future is bright for this outdoor attraction. Haven’t been there in a while? Here are a few things you can do at Explore Park right now: Hiking and Biking Explore over 14 miles of trails as they wind through hundreds of acres of deciduous forest – comprised mainly of oak, beech, maple, pine and poplar trees. You’ll encounter a variety of ecosystems along your way, from natural wetlands to fertile sloping hillsides. Our natural surface trails range in difficulty from easy to moderately difficult as terrain varies throughout the park (see map on page right). Explore Park is a designated site on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail. Roanoke River Access Nearly two miles of the Roanoke River flows through the park, from the light rapids and picturesque rocky gorge on the North side of the park, to the calmer water at Rutrough Point where the headwaters of Smith Mountain Lake begin. An easy hike down River Walk Trail provides ample opportunity for bass and trout fishing or bird watching, where you catch a glimpse of osprey, herons, ducks and other fowl. Rutrough Point includes a boat access for canoes or kayaks. Visitor Center This must-see parkway stop contains a gift & snack shop, theatre room featuring a special movie about the Blue Ridge Parkway, and a museum highlighting the history of the parkway and the region. Staff are on hand April to November to provide information to travelers about other regional attractions.

22

Get outside and enjoy over 14 miles of trails, previously closed to the public. Look for NEW PROGRAMS at Explore Park throughout the summer, announced on www.RoanokeCountyParks.com.

Historic Area Take a walk through history, and see a variety of reconstructed buildings from the 1700’s and 1800’s, including a fort, homestead, school house, barn, blacksmith shop and grist mill. Arthur Taubman Center & Mountain Union Church These 18th century style buildings are filled with historical charm and modern amenities. Both buildings are used for recreation programs and activities, or can be rented for weddings or other events. Summer Camp Programs We’re introducing FIVE new summer camp programs at Explore Park. Three of them are for ages 7-10 , with satellite transportation from Tanglewood Mall. These programs focus on environmental exploration, hiking, archery, crafts and more. A program for ages 11-13 cover wilderness survival skills and other outdoor activities. See page 28 for information. As you can see, much has been done at Explore Park over the past few months - but we’ve only scratched the surface of the endless possibilities! Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is working to build partnerships with businesses, community groups and other organizations to help bring the park back to life. Please be aware that this is a long term project that will take many years to develop. We’ll keep you informed about progress every step of the way, and celebrate small victories as they happen. The gates are open at Explore Park and, as the name implies, we hope you will get out there and explore.

10 Tips to Stretch Your Food Dollars on a Budget

Still need inspiration? Check out our Lose Big class and personal training options on page 44. Our certified trainers can help you choose the right foods.

By Stephanie Specht, of

W

e all know that we should eat healthy to maintain our ideal weight, but did you know that eating a healthy diet also increases your chances of living a long and good-quality life? “Making the commitment to eat a healthy diet will help you not only feel better, but you will look better, function better, and live longer,” explained Don Mankie, R.D., a Carilion Clinic dietitian. “Consuming a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and lean protein foods, as well as drinking plenty of water and exercising, are key to maintaining a healthy weight and keeping disease at bay.” Many people think that to eat healthy you have to spend more money at the grocery store, but according to Mankie, that is not the case. Below are his top 10 tips for eating healthy on a budget: 1. Plan: Before you head to the grocery store, sit down and plan your meals for the week. This is a good time to search for quick and easy recipes online. Stews and stir-frys are great options to bulk up on vegetables and protein, plus you can double the recipe and freeze some for later. 2. Make a list: After you have planned your meals for the week, make a grocery list according to a set budget and stick to it. Avoid any aisles in the grocery store that don’t include items on your list. 3. Hit the sales: Check your local grocery store for sales and don’t forget your coupons. 4. Buy in-season: Choose fresh fruits and vegetables that are in-season, since they are usually cheaper and fresher, as well. 5. Look for canned and frozen: Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are great, healthy options too. They are sometimes

36

cheaper than fresh foods and you can buy these items in bulk to stretch your grocery budget. When buying canned items, always opt for low-sodium or no-salt added versions and fruits that are canned in 100 percent fruit juice. 6. Avoid convenience items: Pre‐cut fruits and vegetables are convenient but they also cost more. Buy fruits and vegetables in their simplest form and spend a couple of hours on Sunday prepping for the week to save money. 7. Stock up on staples: Purchase items such as canned fruits and vegetables, dried beans, and pastas in bulk. Having these on hand in your pantry can make putting a week-night meal together a snap. 8. Buy store brands: Look for the store brand since they are often cheaper than name brand items. 9. Don’t waste food: Fruits and vegetables don’t always last long, but instead of throwing them out, add any leftover vegetables to soups or casseroles, and overripe fruit is great for smoothies and baking. 10. Start a garden: Plant a small garden in your back yard or try container gardening. It is a great way to save money, get the entire family involved, and you won’t be able to beat that fresh picked taste! Now you are ready to eat healthier and save some money. T’ai Chi Chaun

Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. The Art of Gardening As Therapeutic Recreation

Our vegetable garden at the Brambleton Center has become a popular place for individuals with disabilities to have fun while learning new skills.

By Kristen Gallatin of

G

rowing up in a rural community, everyone I knew had a vegetable garden. In the summer, no one bought vegetables from a grocery store, you just went out back to your garden and plucked off all the tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce that you needed to make the most delicious and refreshing summer salad. As a child, I can remember spending many hot and humid summer evenings, sweating through my T-shirt, standing barefoot in the cool, red clay planting corn, onions, and potatoes. Like most kids, I would have rather been playing kickball in the backyard with my neighborhood friend, however, it taught me so many valuable lessons and left me with an immense appreciation for those that grow and harvest the food we all eat. So as a programmer for Therapeutic Recreation, when an opportunity arose to develop a gardening program for the TRS participants, I jumped at the chance. Roanoke County offers recreation for youth and adults with disabilities through Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley (TRS), with the mission to provide specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure opportunities for people with disabilities. TRS is the sole provider of recreational opportunities for the entire Roanoke Valley, working in conjunction with the City of Roanoke and the City of Salem. TRS serves adults with developmental/cognitive disabilities, visual impairments, psychiatric disabilities, and youth with multiple developmental disabilities. Last spring, Mingle, a TRS young adult transition and social club for people with disabilities, ages 18-30, began cultivating a vegetable garden at the Brambleton Center. With the help of volun-

46

teers from the 4-H Extension office and funding through a grant provided Valley Beautiful, we planted potatoes, onions, lettuce, radishes, sweet & hot peppers, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, & tomatoes. Participants took part in all aspects of the garden from growing and planting seedlings, raking, pulling weeds, watering, and harvesting. Though some participants were skeptical at first, by the end of summer, all participants enjoyed jumping right in to the work and getting their hands dirty. Vegetable gardening offers an abundance of benefits for anyone, but especially for people with disabilities. Just a few of the benefits our participants experienced were relaxation and enjoyment, an opportunity to promote health and wellness, skill development, social interactions, and sensory stimulation. The gardening program has also been a great opportunity for TRS participants to improve their mental health through a sense of purpose and achievement. With each ripe tomato or zucchini, the participants can take pride in their accomplishment of growing and caring for their own food from seed to table. Another advantage of the garden was having fresh produce available to help teach valuable daily living skills, such as food prepping and cooking. Using our veggies from the garden we made a variety of dishes like mashed potatoes, salads, baked squash and zucchini, cucumber and tomato salad, and the group’s favorite, fried green tomatoes.

Arts

Looking toward the future, TRS is hoping to expand our garden project and create a garden accessible to all our participants, including those who use wheelchairs or have a hard time bending and stooping due to a physical disability. In order to achieve this, we are hoping to acquire the following items; • Raised garden beds to help avoid bending and stooping • Tables or carts that are wheelchair accessible where people can do potting and planting together. • Pots, window boxes, wheelbarrows and raised containers to make gardening more accessible. • Containers with wheels, which can be moved around easily to accessible positions and to catch the sunlight. This year, TRS is opening up the garden program to all TR participants. The Intro to Gardening program will be held at the Brambleton Center on Monday mornings so all TR participants can learn new skills and enjoy the benefits of gardening. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the garden program or for more information about other TRS programs, please call 7727529, ext. 2.

Never Too Old To Go Horseback Riding

R

on and Kathleen Gore have over 45 years of experience with horses. We’re not just talking about the occasional ride. This married couple breaks, trains, rides and cares for a herd of 75 horses of 27 varying breeds. They are owners of Reba Farm in nearby Bedford County, and they spend all day every day (and often well into the night) interacting with these unique creatures. At the age of 65, Ron understands the fear many older adults have of hopping on the back of a horse. He’ll readily admit that his reflexes aren’t as fast as they once were, but Ron believes that age should not be an obstacle to horseback riding. “You don’t have to have lightening fast reflexes. Our belief is everybody who had the desire could do this. It may be at different levels, slower, or with more guidance – but I believe in that vision. Last year we had three participants in their 80s, and countless individuals in their 70’s or younger. We‘ve even taken individuals with disabilities and mainstreamed them with our encouragement.” Reba Farm has partnered with Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism to offer a new horsemanship program geared towards older adults. The goal is to allow interested individuals to choose the experience that’s right for their level of comfort. According to Ron, there are several surprising benefits to horseback riding later in life: • Focus - Riding a horse is an exercise in concentration. With a trained instructor, you can learn how to read the horse and pick up on certain cues the animal is giving. • Physical Strength - The movement you get on the back of a horse is similar to the massage you might receive from a chiropractor. In some cases, riding can be an alternative to back treatment. Holding on with your legs can be a light workout as well.

52

Roanoke County’s newest horseback riding class is geared towards older adults.

• Balance - Horseback riding works on balancing your core without having to deal with a rigorous workout regimen. • Endurance - Knowing when to turn back is an important part of riding at any age. An experienced guide will know what to look for both in the participants and horses, to make sure you end your journey on a positive note. Worried about getting on the horse in the first place? Ron and Kathleen say they have steps and trained wranglers to help. Once you’re on, they say riding and getting off the horse are the easy part. It’s all part of an experience that Ron says can be extremely gratifying. “Perhaps the biggest benefit is to be able to say ‘I just did that, I conquered it!’ That’s an emotional and happy feeling. My biggest goal whether they are two or 82 is that they leave smiling That sense of accomplishment and fulfillment is really big for us.”

Flag is Back

Roanoke County Offers Alternative to Tackle

D

avid Jones is a proud parent and sports enthusiast. For much of the past 15 years of his life, he has served his children and his community as a recreation sports league coach. David has coached basketball, baseball, football, and most recently NFL flag football. Last September, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism began offering flag football as an alternative to tackle for ages six to nine. David’s youngest son Jason had played tackle for a couple of seasons, but grew tired of wearing all of the required padding and equipment on those hot late-summer days. He was also a little intimidated by the tackling. At first, David was unsure about the switch from tackle to flag. “I was a little skeptical, because if he decides in the future to come back to tackle or try out in middle or high school, I felt he might get behind as far as the skills of blocking or tackling.” Despite these concerns, he jumped right in as one of Roanoke County’s first NFL flag coaches. David was immediately impressed by the fast paced nature of the sport, as well as the immediate opportunities it presents to all participants. “In flag football, more kids get to try the running back, receiver and quarterback positions. Last year I had ten kids on my team, and about four of them got to try their hand at quarterback. Each kid got to run the ball in a game, or a pass was thrown to them.” As David quickly realized, flag football gives every child the chance to be an impact player. Kids of all sizes are throwing and catching the ball, making interceptions, pulling flags on defense

Back for a second year, we’ve expanded to another NFL flag age division. Now serving ages 6 to 11.

and running for 50-yard touchdowns – all while having a good time, making friends, getting exercise and having fun. “Kids benefit from playing NFL flag football in many ways,” said Sam Rapoport, USA Football director of football development. “They learn the fundamentals of the sport and compete with other players who love the game as much as they do. It’s great exercise. It’s fun. And kids get to wear authentic NFL team jerseys while doing it.” Flag football teams are also limited to 10 players, which David Jones sees as an added benefit. “Going from tackle to flag, the size of the team was big for the coaches. It’s hard to manage that many kids and deal with the all play rules. In flag football you don’t have those issues, and all the kids get lots of playing time.” David also notes that the flag format keeps faster kids from being pigeon holed into running back or receiving positions, and keeps larger or stronger kids from being stuck indefinitely in a linebacker role. Most of all, David says he’s happy this program gives kids another choice to stay active. “Nowadays with technology and playstations, or smartphones, the kids get distracted and don’t get outside. If they get out there and like it they will want to do more of it - just to get out there and stay active is a biggie. As they grow older, staying active will keep them healthy. As for his eight year old son - Ryan has decided to stick with NFL flag football again this year rather than go back to tackle. “He said he had a lot of fun... and that’s all I need!”
