Dear friends and neighbors, Word is getting out about Virginia’s Blue Ridge! I recently took a trip across the state and was pleasantly surprised by the reaction I received when I told people where I was from. It seemed everyone had heard about our abundant cultural and outdoor recreation amenities. They wanted to know more. Those of us who live here often forget what a uniquely beautiful place we call home. One of the core missions of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is to promote tourism through quality and innovative events and park amenities. Our efforts work hand-in-hand with the County’s economic development initiatives, because desirable places to visit are also desirable places to live and work. As you browse this catalog, you’ll read about new community partnerships at Explore Park, summer camp programs for the kids, family events to help you beat the heat, and new equipment at Green Ridge to keep you healthy and fit. We’re proud to be a part of what makes living here so great. Remember, the next time someone asks you where you’re from, say it proudly… Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Sincerely,

Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism

I

met Joe Hine towards the end of a rainy spring day, just as the sun parted the clouds to reveal stunning vistas at the future Wolf Tree Disc Golf Course. He carried a green canvas backpack stuffed full of discs and sticking out of the top was a rolledup, laminated blueprint for his work in progress. His pride was overflowing as he unfurled the plans on the hood of my car and began to talk about this labor of love.

a basket perched way up on a hill, it has this ‘wow’ factor that makes it more challenging but also more memorable.”

“To me course design is almost more enjoyable than playing,” says Joe. “I enjoy the puzzle, the strategy, the statistics and just trying to figure out how it all fits together.”

“With this course there is a lot of old growth that has been preserved” says Joe. “ It’s not often that disc golfers get access to a property with lots of old trees and we can utilize it as part of the design.” The course’s proposed name pays tribute to some of these trees in the name Wolf Tree Disc Golf Course. That’s the name given to large round trees that have grown up alone next to a former field, and now provide so much shade they prevent the growth of smaller trees around them.

Joe is one of several key members of the Roanoke Valley Disc Golf Association currently developing a new 18-hole course near Explore Park, just behind Roanoke County’s Mayflower Hills Park on Rutrough Road. He’s already put in hundreds of hours of planning for this project set to be complete by the end of the year. “You can’t imagine the hours I’ve spent just thinking about this at night,” reflects Joe. “I put my kids to bed, falling asleep next to

them and I’m dreaming about where could this basket go, where could this tee go, how could this play differently. Then you come out here and throw it a hundred times and see if it’s going to be accessible for a top level player but also someone who’s just getting into the sport.” Disc golf has been one of the fastest growing sports in the nation for the past decade, and with that growth comes demand for new and exciting places to play. The Virginia’s Blue Ridge Region is already at the forefront of this trend with public courses in Bedford, Franklin and Montgomery Counties. The facility under development in Roanoke County is already poised to be one of the most picturesque and challenging courses in the region. “It’s incredibly scenic,” says Joe. “I love how secluded and tight into the parkway it is. There’s an art to designing, but one of the things that makes this property so challenging is the changes in elevations. The changes are extreme. We’ve had to figure out how to design holes to reduce our environmental impact. The upside to elevation changes is you don’t see a lot of it in disc golf, especially on the east coast. From a player standpoint, if you see

Fitting in with the environmental education mission of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the disc golf volunteers have been especially passionate about preserving the unique natural amenities in their design.

What’s happening at Explore Park wouldn’t be possible without the support of community partners like the Roanoke Valley Disc Golf Association. The group recently received non-profit certification to accept donations towards the development

of infrastructure in the coming months such as tee boxes and baskets. Roanoke County officials are counting on the enthusiasm of recreation advocates like Joe Hine to help make the Explore Park Adventure Plan vision become a reality. The groundwork has already been set with biking and equestrian organizations to help build and maintain new amenities at the facility. “We’re excited because having a second course in the area will help us be able to continue to grow the sport in the region,” says Joe. “Once we get these courses, with the addition of Greenfield and another course in Rocky Mount, we’re going to become a destination.” After walking the new course with Joe, I hopped back into my car as dusk began to fall. When I went to close the gate, he wasn’t quite ready to leave. “I’ve got a few things to check out,” he said, pulling a disc out of his backpack and heading back into the field.

“I came here 6 years ago and I was looking for someplace that could help me with my weight management. I’d always been heavy. When I got to Green Ridge it was a good fit, the staff there are super helpful and courteous. I’ve developed a lot of friendships here. In the process I’ve trimmed down and lot about 27 pounds and I feel better after being there. This is a good place to support a healthy lifestyle, with the pool and various classes for all ages. The staff is very conscientious to make sure we use the machines properly so I felt safe I wasn’t going to injure myself. There are family activities, and it’s a very community oriented place and I think it’s a good investment!”

T’ai Chi

Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movement; connecting the mind, body, and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goal is to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. Eight week program at the Brambleton Center. I

n a world of multitasking to the nth degree, it’s not too often you get to combine two super-awesome things into one great time. Canvas & Cupcakes is the brainchild of one of our newest instructors at the Brambleton Center. Katie Reed started her adventure by attending a local painting class (you know, the paint events that happen at “nite”) and became inspired to make her passion her career. Having been an art major in college, she had a vast array of talents at her disposal. She wanted to encourage other people that they, too, could pick up a brush and create something beautiful. Last year, Katie began working with Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism to offer a variety of paint programs. This year she’s added a new program to the lineup… Cake & Canvas. It’s a chance to unwind and paint a gorgeous summer scene while enjoying the smells, tastes and squeals of delight as you devour cupcakes from everyone’s favorite cupcake shop…Bubblecake. Katie will lead you step-by-step through the painting process building up each layer of paint to create your masterpiece. We all know how intimidating those white canvases can be and although Katie’s class is not technically paint by numbers; it’s pretty close. When you enter one of Katie’s classrooms it’s not the paint or supplies you get to deal with first, it’s the pledge…pledge to have fun and keep a positive attitude. “It really never surprises me that a positive attitude is the hard part for some students. In the beginning participants get easily discouraged and are sure their canvas will be a disaster, but by the end as we work in the final details it becomes something beautiful and something that they can’t wait to get home and hang in the living room!” The process of discovering your inner artist is part of why she loves teaching these programs so much. The other part is being able to do what she loves…paint! Every class brings a different group of people and features a different theme for the night. This summer she will be offering two themes for her new Cake & Canvas program as well the opportunity to enjoy some delicious cupcakes while the paint dries. Satisfy your sweet tooth with this new spin on the “paint and sip idea,” sure to bring you a smile and a sugar rush.

I

t’s often been said that sending a child to summer camp can be transformative. For Glenvar High School senior Ian Bongard, summers at Camp Roanoke have truly been life-shaping experiences! Inspired by outdoor recreation activities at camp, Ian has seen tremendous success over the past few years on the semiprofessional bike racing circuit. He’s a rising star in the Category 1 racing class of the junior men’s downhill mountain biking event, complete with sponsorships and several winning placements under his belt.

Even as Ian’s reputation grows in professional mountain biking circles, he continues to advocate for the expansion of trails here in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. He’s especially excited about the possibilities at Explore Park, where efforts are currently underway to develop a bike skills facility. “I think it will be great for the community,” says Ian. “It will be another great place to ride, and it will bring a lot more progressive riders. It will be nice to be able to take younger riders and be able to teach them all the way through the process of becoming a biker from learning how to bike to being able to hit trails all the way up to becoming a downhill racer.”

“It’s great to be outdoors,” says Ian. “I like mountain biking because you’re outside and enjoying mother nature. From the people to the trails, it’s a big world to be a part of.” How did Camp Roanoke play such a critical role in his outlook? It boils down to the three core pillars of service upon which every program is built. Each activity is designed to provide kinetic powered recreation, offer outdoor mentor relationships with camp staff and provide a connection to nature.

Roanoke County is currently working with biking groups such as the Roanoke Chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) and Blue Ridge Gravity to create initial concept designs for the new skills facility at Explore Park. Our region is already known for fantastic trails, and will be applying to receive Silver-Level Ride Center designation in the coming months from the IMBA. One thing the area lacks, however, are bike trails for beginning riders. According to Greg Martin, that’s what makes the opportunity at Explore Park so unique. “We will have the ability to facilitate skill development from a very young age through the entire family. Our goal is to get everyone to participate and help prepare more riders for trail riding. Working with local organizations, we’re hearing what the community wants and look forward to developing a national quality facility the region can be proud of.”

“That’s what camping is all about,” says outdoor services manager Greg Martin, who has been a part of Ian’s life since third grade as Camp Roanoke’s primary program coordinator. “ Ian has taken all three of those pillars and taken it to the next level. It’s affirming when you’re able to get to know a participant and their family who are actively engaged in the outdoors with programs you and your staff have cultivated. I’m proud to see a person like Ian who has taken advantage of these offerings and developed his own skills taking him to new summits, illustrating exponential growth.”

Ian Bongard is headed to college in the fall, and his vision for the future continues to be shaped by his experiences at summer camp. He’s recently made the decision to change his intended major from theater lighting design to outdoor recreation. “My experiences at camp really instilled in me that this is where I want to be. I want to be outside doing activities and not just being in an office or something like that. I want to make a career around being outdoors, and hopefully I can come back and work for parks and rec and stay in the area. It’s a great place to be.”

Leave the asphalt behind and let us get you in gear for the trails. Learn the basics of mountain biking with an International Mountain Bike Association certified instructor. They will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to get out there on your own. Our guides also provide plenty of information on the best local trails and rides suited for your ability, which is helpful for anyone new to the sport. No experience necessary. Mountain bikes, helmets, and all instruction provided. Course will meet at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor’s Center.
