THERAPEUTIC SERVICES OF THE ROANOKE VALLEY
A partnership between Roanoke County, City of Roanoke and City of Salem Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley provides specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure
services that empower people with disabilities to gain the knowledge and skills needed for the development of a leisure lifestyle that meets their interests and needs. The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, or who have psychiatric disabilities. REGISTRATION Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to the registration date. Registration can occur up to 2 weeks before the first day of a program. Unless otherwise written, TRS programs will occur at the Brambleton Center. Participants will not be able to register for programs if they have an outstanding balance. Participants need to pay for a program before it occurs. If a program meets for multiple weeks, payment must be made before the last meeting of the program. SUPPORT STAFF Support Staff assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, prompting, and support as participants work towards individual program goals.
HIGH DEMAND CLASSES & WAIT LISTS Sometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. next to the title. If a class fills, the participant will automatically be “High Demand” classes are marked with a placed on a wait list. Participants will be contacted if placed on the wait list and a space becomes available. TRANSPORTATION Transportation fee is $3.00 for each round trip, for those who need to be picked up for programs. Programs that have the word LIMITED after the transportation fee, only offer transportation from home for those who live independently, or in group homes without transportation, all other participants can meet at a pick-up point or at the program. Transportation is only provided at pick-up points for trips outside the Roanoke Valley. TRS Transportation pick-up points are: Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem-Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, and 460 Antique Mall.
INCLUSION People with disabilities are encouraged to participate in recreation programs that meet their interest and function level. Please check out Roanoke County, City of Roanoke, and City of Salem general recreation programs. Contact TRS for more information about Inclusion Services. Request for Inclusion Service must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Transportation is not provided for general recreation programs.

Join your friends as we explore a local restaurant each month, experiencing different cuisines and atmospheres, sure to please the palette. Super Suppers is designed to help participants with ordering from a menu and working within a given budget, while enjoying a night out with friends. No money handling skills are needed. Join TRS as we seek out fun activities, discover new places, experience delicious food and learn exciting exercises with Wednesday Adventurers! Activity information will be distributed weekly to all registered participants highlighting the next week’s activity, transportation, dates, and times. MINGLE
Mingle is defined as mixing, blending, or being united. This program is designed for young adults with disabilities, ages 18-30 who want to “mingle” and build new friendships and reinforce existing relationships within the TRS community. As a member of Mingle, you will work with other group members in planning monthly outings in the Roanoke Valley. Mingle will meet Tuesday or Thursday nights from 7-9 pm (You may register for either night, but not both). To become a member, you must be able to follow two step directions, be independent in your personal care, have the ability to care for your own belongings, and self-administer your medications. Leisure Seekers provides a structured environment for skill-building, socializing with peers, and engaging in a smorgasbord of activities at the Brambleton Center and throughout the Roanoke Valley. Activities include recreation, culinary skills, and arts/crafts oriented programs on a weekly basis. Program fee covers all materials, supplies, admission fees, and transportation.

Cultural Arts & Activities NEW: TR IDOL - KARAOKE PARTY
Do you sing in the shower or when you think no one is listening? Warm up your vocal chords and prepare to wail your favorite rock anthem or croon a country ballad. Join your pals for the ‘TR Idol’ Karaoke night! Participants can choose from hundreds of songs to sing, from classic rock to golden oldies and today’s top pop and country hits. You will enjoy pizza and drinks while listening to your friends sing their favorite songs. Don’t want to sing? That’s okay; participants that are not interested in singing are still encouraged to register. DATE

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
If you would like to learn the basic tecniques on how to use your camera, this is the class for you! The workshop will be taught by Matt Ross. Let TRS help you see your world through a camera! Do you think the kitchen is a scary place? Do you know the difference between a colander and a spatula? Come on and join your friends at The Friendly Kitchen where participants will learn and practice all the necessary skills needed to prepare a meal. Each month, participants will share in all aspects of the meal preparation including proper hygiene, safe use of utensils, preparing and cooking the food, and cleaning up afterwards. NEW: ADVENTURES IN HAND BUILDING
Have you ever played in the mud? If not, then here’s your chance as you create beautiful and useful clay forms in the pottery studio. In this class you will be guided by the instructor and studio volunteers as you learn simple techniques of clay hand-building and in the process create your projects as a decorating motif. All supplies are included in your program fee. Come prepared to be creative and get messy! Participants should bring a smock or wear clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty since this class will require full participation!

Wellness & Fitness FITNESS CLUB
Fitness Club says it all! In this 6-week program, TR Staff will work closely with each participant to develop specific goals that will be worked on while at Fitness Club. Each week, we will travel to Green Ridge Recreation Center where participants will utilize an individualized set of exercises and stretches designed to help participants meet their fitness goals with modifications or adaptations as needed due to disability. We will also discuss weekly nutrition goals with participants. Please join us as we get up, get moving, and build healthy habits that can last a lifetime! AQUASIZE
Splish splash, forget your bath; it’s time to get your water shoes on! Aquasize is a low impact exercise class designed specifically for Therapeutic Recreation, so you will get a total body workout without putting unnecessary stress on joints and muscles. This is a medium intensity exercise program that uses water resistance and includes strength training exercises and short intervals of cardio training. Good posture- it’s an easy way to improve your health! In the Positive Posture program, you will learn some simple exercises to improve your posture, as well as learn how good posture can help you relieve back pain, breathe better, improve your mood, and even help you lose weight!
