Hiking, Climbing, Biking, Day and Overnight Trips Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley provides specialized and adaptive recreation and leisure services that empower people with disabilities to gain the knowledge and skills needed for the development of a leisure lifestyle that meets their interests and needs. The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, or who have psychiatric disabilities. Registration Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to the registration date. Registration can occur up to 2 weeks before the first day of a program. Unless otherwise written, TRS programs will occur at the Brambleton Center. Beginning in the Fall 2014 semester, participants will not be able to register for programs if they have an outstanding balance of over $200. Participants need to pay for a program before it occurs. If a program meets for multiple weeks, payment must be made before the last meeting of the program. TRS Support Staff Support Staff assist as needed in all aspects of your participation in TRS programs. Duties may include: assisting with transportation, supervision, limited personal care, prompting, and support as participants work towards program, and their individual recreation goals. High Demand Classes & Waitlists Sometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a next to the title. If a class fills, the participant will automatically be placed on a waitlist. Participants will be contacted if placed on the waitlist and a space becomes available. Transportation fee This fee is charged for programs that offer transportation. The fee is $3.00 for each round trip. Transportation is provided from home, as well as the following pick-up points: Brambleton Center, Goodwill Salem -Lakeside Plaza, Goodwill Vinton, & 460 Antique Mall Inclusion People with disabilities are encouraged to participate in recreation programs that meet their interest and functional level. Please check out Roanoke County, City of Roanoke, and City of Salem general recreation programs. Contact TRS for more information about Inclusion Services. Request for Inclusion service must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Transportation is not provided for general recreation programs. our backyard! Less than half an hour from Cave Spring Corners, Bottom Creek Gorge boasts a 200 foot waterfall that forms the headwaters for the Roanoke River. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, Bottom Creek Gorge offers five miles of hiking trails. Spectacular views of the falls await hikers at the overlook. Participants must be able to walk long distances unassisted on strenuous and uneven trails. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes or boots. Accessible transportation is not available. A sandwich lunch is included in the fee. Bring a water bottle, and don't forget your camera! Transportation is provided from pick-up points only. craftsmen, friendly people and Americana charm, Floyd, Virginia is one of the state's most unique tourist destinations. Our first stop will be at Mabry Mill where you can explore one of the most photographed structures on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lunch will be at the Mabry Mill Restaurant, where country-style, home cooked meals are their specialty. Our next adventure will be at the county seat. Here we will stop for shopping in downtown Floyd and live music at the Floyd Country Store. Lunch is included, but bring money if you would like to make any retail purchases. Fairy Stone Camping Trip

candy! The Highland maple festival celebrates the age-old tradition of tapping maple trees to create this delicious treat. We'll visit maple camps to view the processes required to render maple products. Lunch is included in the fee and we will dine at a local eatery. Dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions, and wear sturdy shoes for lots of off-pavement walking. Bring extra money if you like to purchase goodies. Join us at the beautiful Fairy Stone Campground. We will cook dinner and s'mores around the campfire and enjoy the company of our friends. Saturday morning we'll search for 'Fairy Stones' before returning to the Brambleton Center. Tents, food, and all other supplies will be provided. Participants must bring their own sleeping bag or bedroll, and a sleeping pad is recommended. Participants must be independent in personal care, bring and administer their medications, and be able to participate in moderate physical activity. Participants should dress in layers for cool weather, and bring a flashlight. No food is to be brought from home. Transportation from pick-up points only. The Photography class is all new! This spring, we will explore the principles and techniques used to create stunning images with a digital camera. Participants will have the opportunity to take photographs at different locations each week, using the techniques taught by Leah Marlow. Bring your own camera to class. “Hairspray� at Mill Mountain Theater

Journey back to the sixties with the high energy musical, Hairspray! The story follows a young girl, Tracy, trying to achieve her dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore. Confronted with segregation and prejudice, Tracy and friends use song and dance to reach a place of acceptance and understanding. High spirited and fun, this show will leave you singing and dancing. Enjoy making your own crafts and being creative? Then Hodge Podge Crafts is right up your alley! Come and use any materials and supplies that you can find in our craft room and have fun creating! Like a craft that you have made with us in the past? Make it again! Like doing your own thing and being creative? Do it! Expressions with Gwyn

Create with Gwyn Hall; Gwyn has a degree in Art Therapy and will be facilitating and giving you the tools to express yourself in different mediums at the Brambleton Center. You could be painting, sketching or sculpting- let your imagination run wild! Pick-up points include Mountain House as well as home. Snacks and drinks will be provided, dinner is not included. Learn the basic dance moves, then combine them with fun and upbeat Latin music to get your body movin'. Get lost in the music and dancing while making exercise fun! Ne Looking for a new way to meet your fitness

goals this Spring? Why not try Aquasize! In this aquatics class designed especially for Therapeutic Recreation, you will get a total body workout without putting a lot of stress on your joints and muscles. Aquasize is a medium intensity exercise program that includes strength training exercises and short intervals of cardio training. A variety of water fitness equipment will be provided for you to utilize during program. Program will not meet on April 6. Ne One of the easiest ways to improve your

health and help reduce the chance of falls is to strengthen the muscle groups responsible for good posture. In this low-impact 5-week course, Kristen Gallatin, will lead exercises that target your core and back muscles to help develop good posture and increase balance. Leisure Seekers

Leisure Seekers provides a structured environment for skill-building, socializing with peers, and engaging in a wealth of activities at the Brambleton Center and throughout the Roanoke Valley. Weekly activities include an evening at Peter's Creek Putt Putt, a kaleidoscope craft, a picnic at a local public park, and more! Activity information will be distributed weekly at this 6-week program. Program fee covers all materials, supplies, admission fees, and transportation. TR Idol Karaoke Party

Get ready to sing like a rockstar and join us for our annual 'TR Idol' Karaoke night! Participants can choose from hundreds of songs to sing, from classic rock to golden oldies and today's top pop and country hits. We will have pizza and drinks for everyone to enjoy while listening to friends sing their favorite songs. Participants that are not interested in singing are still encouraged to sign up. Wednesday Adventurers

Explore fun activities, new places, delicious food and exciting exercises with Wednesday Adventurers! Activity information will be distributed weekly to all registered participants, highlighting the next week’s activity, transportation, dates, and times. Program fees include all materials, supplies, admission, and lunches for this 6-week program. Payment plans are available. Wednesday Adventurers meets at the Brambleton Center, and throughout the Roanoke Valley. Program fee now includes transportation. Mingle

Mingle is designed for young adults with disabilities, ages 18-30. Participate in socialization, recreation, and leisure activities at the Brambleton Center and wellness activities at Green Ridge Recreation Center. As a member of Mingle, you will work with other group members in planning monthly outings in the Roanoke Valley. Mingle will meet Tuesday or Thursday nights from 7-9 pm (You may register for one night, not both). Both groups will meet one Saturday each semester for ‘Social Saturday’. This is an opportunity for the Tuesday and Thursday night groups to meet and socialize. To become a member, you must be able to follow two step directions, be independent in your personal care, have the ability to care for your own belongings, and self-administer your medications. Mingle will not meet on March 10 or 12, and May 19 or 21. Contact Kristen at 772-7529 to determine eligibility. Program fee of $65 is for January May. Transportation is not provided. Relationship Class

Relationships can be hard for anyone; between friends, family members, and romantic partners. This 3-week class will focus on how to communicate with peers and learning these skills through roleplaying. The primary focus will be about how to respect yourself and others. This is a great class for participants struggling with making friends, communicating feelings appropriately, and those interested in being a good partner to someone they care about. In the last meeting, participants will be discussing intimacy. Participants who took the previous course are strongly encouraged to sign up. w! Self Defense & Safety Ne Do you know what to do in the event of

a fire, home invasion, or other emergency? Hopefully, you will never have to experience any of these events; however, knowing what to do in the event of an emergency is an extremely important skill set to have. With help from multiple community agencies, you will learn new skills that will help you know what actions to take in the event one of these emergencies happens and will give you the confidence to take action. On April 28th, we will visit and tour the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad. The additional two Saturdays a special presentation from the Roanoke County Fire Department and Roanoke City Police Department with be given, followed by an hour long Self-Defense clinic from two black belt instructors from Wada Ki Karate. Monday Night Avengers

The Avengers Social Club is for adults ages 31+ who are looking to meet new people and create friendships while having fun and fostering independence. All activities will be planned by the group and may include things like bowling, cooking classes, arts & crafts or wellness & fitness activities. The group will meet weekly at the Brambleton Center from 6:30-8:30pm. TRS will work to find transportation and carpooling options, if possible. Dinner Dates

Meet at the Brambleton Center for a dinner date with friends! Participants will learn and practice all the necessary skills needed to prepare a meal for friends and family at home. Each month, participants will take part in all aspects of the meal preparation, such as setting the table, preparing and cooking the food, and cleaning up afterwards. This program is designed for participants who want to practice the skills they learn at home and have access to a kitchen. Dinner Dates is on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm. Program fee: $10. Movie Club

Super Suppers Join your friends as we explore a local restaurant each month, experiencing different cuisines and atmospheres sure to please the palette. Super Suppers is designed to help participants with ordering from a menu and working within a given budget, while enjoying a night out with friends. Super Suppers meets on Fridays from 6:30-8:30pm. Program fees vary according to restaurant. The meal, tax, and tip are included in the program fee. Transportation fee: $3 Limited Applebee’s Eating good in the neighborhood! Choose from two of the latest movies and enjoy a great Saturday at Carmike 10, Tanglewood. If you want a popcorn bucket, you will need to purchase a 2015 bucket for $18.50 that can be refilled for $3.50. Movie Club meets on Saturdays from ~4-5:30pm depending on movie choices. Program fee includes movie ticket and supervision. Movie Club routes are not mailed. If you have an email, you can choose to receive an E-Route. Ellery Pippin is a TRS intern from January through the end of April, from Longwood University. Ellery has worked with participants at the 30th Annual Valentine’s Dinner Dance, Leisure Seekers, Monday Night Avengers, and Harlem Globetrotters. Ellery has passed her Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist test, and once she completes her internship with TRS, will be a CTRS.

Staff Update

TRS has two Program Support Specialists: Richard Bailey and now Matt Ross. Program Support Specialists create and implement programs for TRS.

TRS would like you to join us in welcoming a new Program Support Specialist. Matt Ross has a degree from Brevard University in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education. He is a jack of many trades; teaching motorcycle safety courses, photography, musician, high and low rope course facilitator, as well as a mental health support worker. Matt will be leading the Monday Night Avenger’s, Leisure Seekers, and other programs. Please be sure to welcome Matt and introduce yourself to him.
