Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley Selecting programs that are right for you... The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and those who are blind or have visual impairments. If you have questions about a program or the level of functioning needed, please contact any of the TR staff listed below. Course #: The course # allows us to process your registration form more quickly and accurately. Program Fee: This is the fee that is charged for participation in that specific program. Transportation Fee: This fee is charged for programs that offer transportation. The fee is $3.00 for each round trip. Transportation is provided from home as well as the following pickup points: Goodwill Salem, Goodwill Vinton, 460 Antique Mall, Brambleton Center, Green Ridge Recreation Center

Lock In Have you experienced all that Green Ridge has to offer? Do you just want a night away with good friends? Then bring your sleeping bag and swim suit, and join us as we take over Green Ridge! Participants will get to swim, play games, watch a movie and explore Green Ridge. We will have dinner and build your own sundaes Friday night and breakfast before we all leave Saturday morning. Wellness & Fitness Yoga, Pilates, group exercise, aquatics, and health classes ! Tai Chi ew If you’re looking for another way to reduce N
stress and get fit, then tai chi (pronounced “TIE-chee”) is the class for you. Tai chi is a Chinese martial art that is sometimes described as “meditation in motion” because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body. Movements are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance, while improving circulation and blood flow. head to Liberty Mountain in Lynchburg for an afternoon of snow tubing! Liberty Mountain offers multiple snow tube slopes year round, so we are guaranteed to have a blast! After 2 hours of tubing, we will wrap up our adventure with a fast food dinner. Participants should bring money for dinner. Participants must be capable of walking on uneven and slippery terrain with minimal assistance. Participants will be expected to provide their own winter attire. Pick-up points only. N musical, Cats, comes to life on The Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre stage, a state-of-the-art German-themed dinner theatre nestled in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of Southwest Virginia. Upon arriving in Wytheville, you will be served a four course meal prepared by the inhouse chef. Then sit back, relax and enjoy one of Broadway’s most popular shows. Fitness Club Whether you’ve never been in a gym or are a regular, fitness club’s individualized assistance will be sure to give you the support needed to succeed! We will have access to the cardio and adaptive equipment, weight machines and indoor track at the Green Ridge Recreation Center! The first week will be an orientation on how to use the equipment, and then TRS support staff will help you reach your fitness goals each week. Join us as we get up and get moving! Cultural Arts Arts, crafts, pottery, ceramics, painting, music, and dance classes ! Canvas Sewing Class w e Spend a cold winter day hanging out with N
friends and learning a new hobby! Canvas sewing uses hard plastic grids and yarn to weave a design, creating a beautiful hand sewn craft. Participants will start with a beginner level tissue box cover. When registering you will get to choose your project, either a bird house design, western motif, or butterfly pattern. We will break for lunch from Bojangles, and then wrap- up our sewing after lunch. Take your finished or unfinished project home to show off your new skills! Valentine’s Dinner Dance Attend the 27th Annual Valentine’s Dinner Dance at the elegant Hotel Roanoke ballroom to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Monday February 13th. Come and enjoy delectable food, rocking music, delirious dancing, and an evening of fun and surprises. The sit down dinner begins at 6 PM sharp, followed by the crowning of the King and Queen of Hearts. Then dance to the good ole rock and roll music of Insufficient Funds. Mediterranean, French, Japanese, & Mexican cuisine without ever leaving the Brambleton Center! We will concentrate on basic cooking techniques and skills while preparing easy international dishes that can be made in your own home. Participants will get to sample the dishes made each week. Movie Club Hang out with your friends and watch a new release at Carmike 10, Tanglewood. You will have a choice between two preselected movies to watch. Bring your own money for concessions if desired. Routes for Movie Club will be mailed out the Wednesday before the program. If you want a popcorn bucket, you will need to purchase a 2012 bucket for $15 that can be refilled for $2.50. Program fee includes movie ticket and supervision. Out & About Let’s go Out & About with TRS! Each month, participants will go out to eat at various area restaurants. This program is specifically designed for participants who want to work on independence and money handling skills. Participants must have a concept of money handling and basic math. Participants will need to bring their own money each program to cover the cost of dinner and a tip. Program fee does not include meals. Participants may choose either Out & About or Super Suppers each month, not both. See below for restaurants and descriptions. Wednesday Adventurers Explore fun activities, new places, delicious food and exciting exercises with Wednesday Adventurers! In this 6 - week program, activities will include morning exercise and wellness activities, Valentine’s Day crafts, homemade Terrariums and outings to Hollins University Art Museum, and the Roanoke Wildlife Rescue, and photography class. Activity information will be distributed weekly to all registered participants, highlighting the next week’s activity, transportation, dates, and times. Join your friends as we explore a local restaurant each month, experiencing different cuisines and atmospheres sure to please the palette. Super Suppers is designed to help participants with ordering from a menu and working within a given budget, while enjoying a night out with friends. No money handling skills are needed. ~TRS Staff Updates~ TRS would like to welcome 3 new staff: Warren Strickland, Stuart Greene, and Emily Gardner! Over the past semester you may have already seen these new faces at programs like Fitness Club, Valley Ventures, and Leisure Seekers, but if you haven’t be on the look out for them! Warren comes to us after many years of teaching and substitute teaching with the Botetourt County School system. Stuart’s background is in the IT field, but he came to TRS looking for new experiences and a way to get involved with his community. TRS & our participants would like to bid farewell to Pete Haslip, Director of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, as he officially starts his retirement January 1, 2012. Pete will be ending his career with over 17 years of service to the County. Pete, know that you will be remembered for the things that you did here. Thanks for your years of hard work and dedication. Congratulations on your retirement and remember you are always welcome to come bust a move at the Valentine’s Dance!
With the announcement of Pete’s retirement, Roanoke County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is pleased to introduce the new Director, Doug Blount. Doug has already been with the County several months, learning the ins and outs of each section. Doug is originally from the Roanoke area, but is returning after a 15 year period in Price William County, Virginia. We look forward to getting to know Doug and sharing with him all the fun and exciting opportunities that TRS provides in the community!

Guidelines for Registration Registration
Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail to the TRS main office, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to registration date. Registration begins:

Transportation
Participants are asked to provide their own transportation, as County provided transportation is available on a very limited basis. Space will be available until filled. It is TRS policy to only wait five (5) minutes for a participant after their scheduled pickup time. After that, the van will continue on the route. If a participant is a “no show” without prior notification three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. When meeting at pick-up points, if a participant’s transportation is more than five (5) minutes late for pick up/drop off time, three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. If a participant is removed from transportation, they will receive a refund for those fees. Based upon registrations, activities may be moved to an alternate location to help facilitate transportation needs.
High Demand Classes & Waitlists
Sometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these next to the title. If a class fills, “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a the participant will automatically be placed on a waitlist. Participants will be contacted if placed on the waitlist and a space becomes available.
Refunds & Credits
In the event that Roanoke County cancels a class, participants will automatically receive a full credit to their account. Credits will be carried on the account and can be used toward future courses and activities. If a participant would like a refund, notify TRS and a refund will be processed within three weeks if the amount is over $25. Credit amounts under $25 will remain on accounts for future use. If a participant must withdraw from a course, they must be withdrawn before the class begins. A participant will receive a refund if another TRS participant can fill your spot. Credits for trips or special events (such as theatre productions where tickets are purchased in advance) cannot be given after tickets are purchased unless your place can be filled.
Guidelines for Inclusion: For participation in general recreation classes, with assistance from TRS staff, a participant must: • Meet registration requirements of the selected class, ie. age, residency, prerequisites. • Be able to adhere to the rules of conduct. • Be able to follow simple directions and be able to communicate your basic needs. • Have the ability to tolerate and function in appropriate class sizes based on type of program. • Be able to participate in the selected activity for the majority of the scheduled time.

Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley General Information Payment Options
Payments must accompany registration and may be made by cash, check, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) or money order; made payable to: Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. If mailing a check, call to confirm your balance before you mail in your registration. Registration is not considered complete until class fee is received.
Financial Assistance:
Rec Bucks is a program which will provide a waiver or reduction of fees to residents who have demonstrated financial need.
Accessible Formats:
TRS program information is available in accessible formats that meet individual needs. Information is available in Braille, large print, elementary formats and other formats upon request. Call 772-7529 for more information on this award winning service.
Inclement Weather:
Participants will be contacted should weather conditions postpone and/or cancel scheduled TRS classes or events. Please refer to our refund/ credit policy on page 9 for details. Please call TRS at 540-772-7529 ext 2 if you have weather related questions.
