To the citizens of Roanoke County,
T
Pete Haislip is retiring at the end of the year after 18 years of service to Roanoke County.
hey say all good things must come to an end. That is so true. After 18 years of good times, I will be retiring as Director of Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism effective December 31, 2011. It has truly been an honor to be able to serve you and to have a part in making Roanoke County a special place to live. Very seldom does a person have the opportunity to work in such a supportive community with citizens who place such a high value on parks and recreation. There are so many people and groups I could thank but there is just not enough space here. I would be remiss if I did not recognize our partners in youth sports, the Recreation Clubs and their thousands of volunteers who run top quality programs that have such a positive impact on thousands of our youth. Also, the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Advisory Commission members, both past and present, who provide much needed leadership and guidance, as well as the numerous partners and colleagues throughout the valley who we have cooperated with to help make the Roanoke Valley such a great place to live, work, and play. We also have been very fortunate to have a forward thinking county staff, Board of Supervisors and School Board, who recognize that parks and recreation is a key component to a community’s quality of life. They, along with our citizens were always willing to make the investments necessary to ensure our parks and programs are second to none.
Roanoke County PRT Advisory Commission Catawba District
None of this would have been possible, however, without the finest, most hard working and dedicated staff I have ever had the privilege to work with. Every person is committed to providing the best customer service, special events, programs, and parks that you will find anywhere in the country. I have been proud to be a part of this team and will carry nothing but fond memories with me of Sincerely, our time together. I hope you’ll continue to support them as you have always supported me. Roanoke County is a very special place. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

Recreation Gift Cards By Scott Ramsburg
Give the Gift of Experience
S LIFE
tuff… We’ve got too much of it. Cable television is full of programs like Hoarders, and Buried Alive, which make us feel better about the clutter in our own lives at the expense of others. While my home is not quite in complete disarray, I freely admit that I could make do with much less. Americans give and receive more “stuff”at Christmas than any other time of year. In my family, we have made the conscious decision to spend more money on experiences than physical objects. Some of the budget that once went to toys, trinkets and the latest electronics devices are now being put aside for day trips and family vacations. Experiential giving works well for my family, but what about gifts for others? Gift cards have continued to grow in popularity in recent years, in large part because there’s simply nothing left to give. In today’s consumer culture of cheap commercial goods, we have already purchased the things we truly desire. At the end of the day, all most gift cards provide is a way to collect more stuff. Roanoke County is excited to introduce an alternative to the both traditional gifts, and the traditional gift card. The new Recreation Gift Card lets you pass on an experience to your family and friends, with the flexibility of personal choice. The diverse recreation offerings provided by the County make it easy to shop for almost any age or interest. Redeem your gift card for a day of fun at Green Ridge Recreation Center or Splash Valley Water Park. Use your gift card to sign up the kids for a sports clinic or craft activity. Reserve a picnic shelter for your next family reunion. Travel with your friends on a day-trip or week-long vacation. Or sign up for an adult recreation program, like Life Uncluttered – an exciting workshop that teaches you how to eliminate some of that excess “stuff”. Frequent program participant Amy Graybill says she’s excited about the new offering from Roanoke County. “I like getting and giving...I know a lot of people think they are impersonal, but I think they are a great way of providing something special that the person can use however they’d like! So many times I look at the parks and rec mag and think `wow, the kids would like that,’but I never jump on the opportunity. A gift card would give me a reason... plus it’s a bit out of the box and would engage folks in something that they may have not utilized!” When the Holidays are over, it’s really the experiences that we remember the most! With the Recreation Gift Card, you provide memories for friends and family that will continue long after the decorations are taken down.

New this Winter, purchase re-loadable gift cards at any Roanoke County recreation center.

Life, Uncluttered!
Life Uncluttered is a class for everyone who answers the following questions with YES! Have you ever lost your keys? Have you ever paid a bill late? Do you have piles of “stuff” on tables or the floor? Do you feel overwhelmed when you walk into a room in your home? Do you tell yourself you need to get rid of the clutter but don’t know where to start? If you said yes to any of these questions, you need this class. Sign up now and learn the basics of getting organized and unclutter your life. Bring a small organizing project with you like a drawer, a file, a stack of papers or your purse or wallet! Pool Party? No stress! By Maureen Wilson
I
AQUATICS
t’s the middle of winter; your daughter’s birthday is just around the corner. She informs you that if she has one more boring“home”birthday party she is just going to die. Oh, the drama of a 7 yr old. However, she makes a good point. You’re tired of trying to pick a theme that is fun and not too expensive. Add to the list, cleaning the whole house top to bottom on your already busy schedule. To top it off at the end of the party, she gets presents and you get a headache from all the party stress. What can you do, she’s too old for Chuck-e-Cheese and too young for a girl’s night out. Cue saving grace music….
Find out about special party packages in the new fold out section at the center of this magazine!
Green Ridge Recreation Center has a plethora (bunch) of options for you and your sweet one’s birthday party success. We offer not only the party room with your rental plan, but your choice of pool time, game room time or both! Amy Duncan, a busy mother who lives here in Roanoke County, took advantage of our great facility recently for her daughter’s birthday party. She had attended several parties here by other families and finally felt it was her turn to enjoy the party and not the stress. “One of the best parts was having everything be so easy, I knew when, where and what my party was going to be. I also knew what it was going to cost me and how I needed to pay. For me the lack of stress and the party being a total success was worth every penny.”One of the kids, who attended the party, was actually over heard saying that this was the best birthday party ever! Rental Coordinator, Luona Blankenship strives to have every birthday party be such a success. “Here at Green Ridge we have one of the best options in town when it comes to indoor winter fun! Our indoor heated pool makes a pool party possible any time of the year.”This kind of fun isn’t limited to just kids’ parties either. Green Ridge Recreation Center will host corporate events with the same level of enthusiasm and support as our family hosted parties receive. So, this Winter when you are looking for that next big“something awesome”for your loved ones make it a Green Ridge party and you won’t be disappointed. For more information on scheduling your next party at Green Ridge RecreationCenter contact Luona Blankenship at (540)7776306.

Winter Workout Just Keep Moving
Physicians on Foot
Get in stride by walking with a doctor! Every Saturday at 8:30am at Tanglewood Mall (near JCPenney). For more information visit CarilionClinic.org/walking
Check out our family ski trips on page 49 for more winter fun! By Laura Markowski, of Carilion Clinic
W
Whether you’re retired, a busy parent, a single professional or a child, there are many fun and creative ways to keep moving this winter to help fight off colds and the flu, and maintain your overall health. First, park farther away from work, the grocery store or the mall. Those extra steps can add up. It may be good to buy a pedometer to track exactly how many steps you take each day. Challenge yourself to increase that number over time to at least 10,000 steps a day or strive for at least 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity. Along the same line, take the stairs instead of an elevator, or walk to a co-worker’s office instead of simply sending an email. A moment away from your desk also can be beneficial to your mental health. If shopping is one of your hobbies, then try incorporating exercise into it. Next time you head to the mall, wear you walking shoes and pick up the pace. Carilion Clinic offers “Physicians on Foot” at Tanglewood Mall every Saturday morning (see box for more information). It’s a great way to meet new people, get exercise and maybe spot a great deal. Another option is outdoor winter sports, such as, skiing, ice skating or snowboarding. Just remember to always dress in layers. Despite the cold temperatures, your body can still sweat. By dressing in layers, you can easily remove a shirt or hat if you do get hot. One thing to remember about layers: Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin. Also remember to drink plenty of fluids. “Most people only think of hydrating during the summer or hot weather, but it’s just as important in the winter,” said Jill Lucas Drakeford, a Carilion Clinic health educator.
Drinking water or a sports drink during your workout is important, even if you don’t feel thirsty. It’s important to try and stay hydrated throughout the day.“Water will keep your belly satisfied and you will not feel as hungry,” said Samantha Gealoris, of Carilion Clinic Nutrition Services. We all know sticking to a diet during the winter, more specifically the holidays, is no easy feat. But just like with exercise, some simple daily changes can help improve your health.
WELLNESS
hen the sun is shining and the weather is warm, the motivation to get outside and exercise comes much easier. But when the cold weather comes around, that motivation can take a nose dive.
If you’re planning to attend holiday parties, avoid appetizers or eat very few of them. “Appetizers are usually high in fat, so if there is a vegetable platter eat as much of that as you want, but make sure the dip is ‘light’,” Gealoris said. When it comes to a main course, turkey is your best bet, as long as it’s not fried. Oven-baked is the healthiest option. Turkey is a healthy meat and a good way to fill up. When you find yourself going for another spoonful of mashed potatoes, grab more turkey instead if you’re still hungry. Probably the easiest thing to remember over the winter when it comes to dieting is not to skip meals, especially breakfast. Even if you have a big dinner planned, it’s important to eat a hearty breakfast with protein to help keep you full for most of the day. “Skipping meals early in the day will only make you eat more at the main meal,” Gealoris said. While the winter chill may be coming over you, take action now to maintain your health. Making minor adjustments and changes in routine can have a major impact. By starting now and getting yourself into the habit of exercising and eating healthy consistently, you can prevent unhealthy habits from snowballing this winter.

Coach Ed Green (below) brings the new Great Beginnings program to Roanoke County.
“
Great Beginnings A new approach to youth sports
By Scott Ramsburg
I
ATHLETICS
teach parents first, and then the parents can teach their kids,” says Ed Green, coordinator of Roanoke County’s new Great Beginnings youth athletics program. Green shouts instructions to a fresh group of parent and child participants with the intensity of a veteran coach, and the passion of a loving grandparent. For the past seven years, this former basketball coach and athletic director at Roanoke College has dedicated his life to enhancing family relationships through sports. Inspired by memories of playing catch with his father at a young age, Ed Green started the program as a way to introduce his own grandchildren to the fundamentals of gameplay, technique and sportsmanship. He says Great Beginnings is unique because of its strong focus on relationship building. “This may be the first experience a child has had with another person or coach barking out skills. It’s important that parents model the proper skills for the child. I try to exemplify a positive atmosphere and get around to every parent and child.” Every Great Beginnings class requires the participation of at least one parent or guardian. Green ends every session with a sit-down talk about ethical and moral values. “You learn two ways, by the books you read and the people you meet,” says Green. “If you get on a bicycle and just sit there you fall off. You have to have coordination. That requires being able to go down the sidewalk in a balanced manner. In the same way, you have to have a balanced life. I’m talking to the parents, too! Socially… nutritionally… Be yourself, believe in yourself and be going somewhere.” Lee Faulkner is the parent of two Great Beginnings participants, and says that Ed Green brings something to the program that you don’t always see in sports instruction.“He’s getting a positive message out, not just to the kids, but to the parents too. In addition to his strong emphasis on learning sports fundamentals, Ed weaves stories and lessons about life into his instruction. He takes a holistic
40
approach to instruction and he’s totally committed to the service he provides. Kids leave his programs with more confidence and a strong foundation in both technical skills and sportsmanship. And you can tell he has a love for coaching as well as a love for the kids.” While some parents are at first a little hesitant about participating with their child, most end up getting something out of the program for themselves. Arlain Martin says that her son’s participation in a Roanoke County youth athletics program had a huge impact on her husband. “I think they bonded as father and son, and it was exciting for Zach to do something with his father. It also prompted my husband to volunteer in other sports as a coach. Now he’s an assistant football coach and he’s gotten so much out of it… To be able to watch my son develop as a player, with sportsmanship and camaraderie and help pass those lessons on to others!” Ed Green hopes that the social, athletic and moral balance he prescribes will affect the world in a positive way for years to come. Roanoke County athletics supervisor Allen Hayes agrees, saying that there is much more to the program than just learning a new skill.“I am a firm believer that as a society, our youth sports have gotten too competitive and children are not learning fundamentals of a sport or are too focused on winning. Great Beginnings Programs are the perfect first experience for a child into organized sports. It is an innovative step-by-step approach that builds participants confidence and self-esteem in a fun and safe sports environment.” When asked about the success of the program, Ed Green says he won’t know for another 20 years. “I hope what I’m talking about at the end of each session is going to multiply, and the families will be able to teach their children,”says Green. “The success will come from families enjoying one another in a positive recreational atmosphere long after the Great Beginnings program is over. That’s my goal.”

Preschool Athletics Great Beginnings Youth Clinics
Did you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they needed to compete in organized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frustration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional program targeted to three, four, and five year old boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervision of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work together with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.
Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism offers youth athletics programs in cooperation with local Recreation Clubs. Youth Athletic participants must sign up through the local Recreation Club that serves the child’s area determined by their elementary school. If you have questions about which Recreation Club serves your school area, or if you need more information about various sports offered by each Recreation Club, please contact us at 387-6078 or visit www.roanokecountyva.gov/recclubs. Participants must be a Roanoke County resident or attend Roanoke County Public Schools to be eligible, and must play in their age bracket. Each club will have cut-off dates for signups, so sign-up EARLY! SPORT

Quick Start Tennis
Quick Start Tennis is a new format to help children 8 and under learn and play the game of tennis. To make it easier for them, a few things have changed. The court size. The racquet sizes. The balls. The scoring system. The height of the nets. The changes really work, because now any child between ages 4 and 8 can start playing tennis almost immediately, even if he or she has never picked up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, QuickStart Tennis stresses the importance of actually playing the game of tennis and getting involved in team competition. This means that even more children will have the opportunity to experience this new format, have fun playing with their friends and develop skills that will become the foundation of their game. Fee: includes all equipment needed, including age appropriate rackets which must be returned. Ages

They’re part of a growing program called Energy Management Systems. “We should be the generation that makes this country energy independent,” says Virginia Western program head Dan Horine. “The key is integration. Our program teaches students the management of energy through creative and renewable sources. We want them to integrate the use of current and new technologies, but be realistic about the approach.”

nvironmental education is one of the top priorities of the staff at Camp Roanoke, a 700 acre facility operated by Roanoke County. Best known as a youth summer camp, this unique outdoor playground hosts retreats, educational field trips and team building workshops throughout the year. Visitors to Camp Roanoke will soon be able to learn about the science behind today’s cutting edge environmental sustainability technologies, thanks to a group of students and instructors from Virginia Western Community College.

Saving Energy
Learning Opportunities at Camp
OUTDOORS
Over the past few months the class has installed weather monitoring equipment at Camp Roanoke to help match different methods of alternative energy collection to potential areas of use. For example, students were able to determine that there is enough consistent wind to power all the lights at a large picnic shelter, and that the roof of the dining lodge receives enough direct sunlight to provide supplemental heat for hot water. Contingent on funding, these students plan to use the information they’ve collected ro install solar panels and a small wind turbine at camp. This project is just the first step in what Camp Roanoke director Greg Martin hopes will be a long term environmental sustainability laboratory. “Whether you’re a camper, program participant or adult coming here, environmental stewardship is not something limited to the classroom. I think if we’re truly thinking globally as a society, we have to educate the most current energy policies in place. We have to teach kids to be good stewards of natural resources. We can see that first hand at camp through this lab. We’ll be able to see working pieces of environmentalism.” The partnership has benefits for Virginia Western, Camp Roanoke and the public at large. Students in the program get real world experience with cutting edge technologies. Camp benefits from the potential to reduce energy costs as well as provide a new learning opportunity for its visitors. Everyone benefits from the visible public example of good environmental stewardship. Julian Barnes is coordinator of science for Roanoke County Public Schools. He sees tremendous value in having these technologies put on display at Camp Roanoke. “When we talk about sustain-

ability, the environmental movement has often focused on preservation, but the part we don’t see enough of is the conservation part. It’s important that our youth see it happing in their own backyard so they understand the significance and the context is not lost.” In the coming years, Camp Roanoke hopes to continue efforts to promote environmental sustainability and energy independence. Among the camp’s long term goals are additional environmental education workshops, on-site sustainable farming and additional energy collection devices like wind and solar. Hunter Moore, an assistant professor at Virginia Western believes that Camp Roanoke is the perfect place to blend the mission of science and education, saying “the campers will help them be inspired towards innovation in ways that can increase our sustainability. When they come see college students putting equipment in and it will spark the innovation. These can be the people who can grow up to make even better innovations.” Virginia Western student Nathan Battaglia is a participant in the Energy Management Systems program, and agrees that alternative energy education will have a huge impact on future generations. “When I was in high school nobody taught about this field. When you teach other kids they might not understand the costs or the fact we’re running out of fuel and it hurts the Earth, but if you get them familiar at a young age, they’ll accept these new technologies and want to use it in their homes, or even go into the field of alternative energy.” For more information about environmental education opportunities at Camp Roanoke, call the camp at (540) 387-6114, or visit us online at www.CampRoanoke.com.

European Tour
An Unexpected Adventure
Travel to England with Roanoke County, and you probably won’t get stuck there like our editor. By Scott Ramsburg
V
acations don’t always go the way you plan them, but sometimes the most memorable parts of your journey are the moments you least expect. When my wife and I took our first trip to Europe in the Spring of 2010, it was supposed to be a five-day whirlwind tour of London. We wanted to take in some of the rich history and culture of the city without having to worry about speaking a different language, or getting lost in the cultural confusion of a more exotic locale. After sleeping off the jet lag, we turned on the television to find out that we were among the last passengers to cross the Atlantic before the entire airspace over Europe was shut down. The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull continued to spew ash throughout our trip. At first, we thought that the situation would be resolved before our scheduled flight home. We took in sights like the Tower of London and the Globe Theater. We toured museums full antiquities“borrowed”from around the world during the height of the British empire. We even caught a world-class theater production in the famous London West End.
Luckily, we were able to lodge for several days with some friends and former Roanokers living just outside of London in a town called Blackheath. Not only was it a blessing to have an affordable place to stay, but those extra days allowed us to see more of the“real”culture than we ever imagined. Especially memorable was a sunny day in the royal park just outside of Greenwich naval observatory. Without a rigourous schedule of tours or a checklist of museums, we were able to really relax.
It was a vacation on which nothing went as planned, but I consider it one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. There’s something to be said for going off the beaten path, and getting out of your comfort zone just a little bit. While my positive reflection on the experience may be through the rose-colored glasses of almost two years gone by, I wouldn’t trade the memories for anything in the world.

TRAVEL
The day of our scheduled flight home was more like an episode of The Amazing Race than a vacation. After learning that our flight was cancelled, we raced to find a way home! We tried calling the airlines, but remained on hold for hours. We traveled to the airport, but found it barricaded shut. We tried to purchase a train ticket, but the line wrapped three city blocks. Finally we were able to purchase scalped bus tickets to Paris and book a flight through a travel agent from Madrid. That flight was another week away.
Our vacation adventures continued the following week as we rode a bus to Paris, spending two nights in a youth hostel there. The fears of getting around without knowing the language turned out to be unfounded. After a full-day walking tour with a college-aged Aussie tour guide, we felt like we knew Paris inside and out. The final leg of the trip was a 14 hour bus ride to the Spanish capital, where again we got to see more than we’d ever imagined.

Wythe County is the home of two of the most beautiful mansions in Southwest Virginia. The beautiful Fort Chiswell Mansion is a 10,000 square foot brick colonial home built in 1839 that stands like a fortress on a bluff above a busy highway where Interstate 81 and 77 converge. Chris Disibbio bought the 170 year old treasure at an auction in 2002 and has spent thousands of dollars to restore this National Historic landmark to its former glory. Your guided tour includes both the interior and exterior of this spectacular place. Included is a boxed lunch at the Mansion. The Trinkle Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Wytheville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the former residence of William Trinkle, a gentleman farmer with 20,000 acres under his supervision. This Classical Revival home was completed in 1912. The home has an impressive seven fireplaces, two large bathrooms on the second floor, which was uncharacteristic for that time period, as well as state of the art technology for 1912 including steam heat and a built-in central vacuum system. A tour of the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace and Museum is also included. Fee includes all tour fees, boxed lunch, bus transportation and escort. Ages

TRAVEL
This historic Tavern, located in Hanover, VA, is a beautifully restored 200 year old landmark that was begun in 1733. The Tavern has served as an Inn, stagecoach stop, post office and dinner theater. For nearly three centuries, Hanover Tavern’s inhabitants have been a part of events that transformed America from an English colony to an independent nation. Your guided tour features a dozen stops throughout the Tavern, focusing on the evolution of the building, architectural features, important events (Gabriel’s slave rebellion) and interesting visitors such as Patrick Henry. A special highlight is a lunch buffet at the Tavern. In the afternoon you will have a guided tour of historic Scotchtown, the home of Patrick Henry from 1771 to 1778. It was from Scotchtown that he rode to Saint Johns Church in 1775 to deliver his famous Liberty or Death speech, and again in 1776 to be elected first Governor of Virginia. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, buffet lunch, bus transportation and escort.
These hidden gems along the parkway are some of the lesser known treasures of the Blue RIdge.
