Getting Started Young

K

aleigh Duffy is the owner of Prestige Gymnastics Academy. She serves over 400 program participants through over 90 classes per week while employing a staff of 24, including sisters Emilee and Jordyn. She started the company nearly three years ago. Here’s the most amazing part… Kaleigh is only 21.

years, Kaleigh has focused her efforts on growing and expanding the business, offering a series of preschool gymnastics classes at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Over the next few months she will be expanding to offer both adult conditioning and mom & tot gymnastics programs at the Roanoke County facility. Her ultimate goal is to expand their Daleville studio or find a new space to accommodate their growing program.

“The biggest thing has been people come in and ask to speak to the owner when I tell them I am they ask how old I am,” says Kaleigh. “When I opened the business I was 18. Its’ better now that I’m a familiar face and people know my story but it still happens quite often.”

Eighteen year old Emilee is Kaleigh’s sister, and the recreational department leader for Prestige Gymnastics Academy. She helps put together the schedules and curriculum for the various programs offered. “We are about gymnastics, but also about fun,” says Emilee. “Kids will come in thinking they’re not flexible or strong enough, but

Don’t let her age fool you. Kaleigh and her staff have many years of experience both coaching and in competition for the Botetourt Gymnastics Academy. When that studio closed, Duffy approached the owner about purchasing their equipment and student list. With a solid foundation, the business quickly took off. “I’ve always wanted to own my own gym,” she says. “My plan was to go to JMU and study sociology, and I was hoping to open a gym after a degree and family and settle down. God had other plans I guess, and it’s here a lot sooner than expected… but I’m glad it did.” After seeing a great deal of success in their first few

They still live at home with their parents, bouncing ideas off each other every night before they go to bed. At the core, these young business owners always have the best interests of their participants in mind every step they take.

a fun and safe environment for kids to be able to exercise and do something active. Lots of kids aren’t getting the activity they should. Our mission is to set a good example for them while providing good Christian leadership for the kids.” The future is bright for these young entrepreneurs and their even younger program participants. Take a look at our new gymnastics offerings throughout the MOVE section of this magazine to give their programs a try.

“...we base classes around fun and not just ability. The kids and their parents leave wanting to come back.” “Getting kids active with other youth early helps them develop social skills for the rest of their lives,” says Kaleigh. “Taking gymnastics as a kid has helped me. I still have good balance, good strength and hand and eye coordination. For the preschool age kids we add shapes, colors, numbers, music and even sign language into the program. We’re simply incorporating other early skills their parents are already working on with them.”Sister Emilee agrees, saying “Looking at our mission statement, we offer

Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Six week program. Instructor: Denis Spencer.

This women’s only class will teach you the moves and strategies for self defense, from the basic punch, elbow strikes, heel and knee kicks to more complex moves needed to escape danger. Each class starts with proper stretching and warm up exercises. Wear work out attire or loose fitting clothes. Four week program Instructor: Tom Ramsey.

Great Beginnings Basketball

Great Beginnings is a five week instructional program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized basketball in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. Each child, along with his or her parents, work together to learn basic motor skills needed to successfully move on to more organized sports in years to come. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skill stations are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in youth sports. We’ll also help develop the child’s motor and cognitive skills while providing social interaction time. Active parent participation is required for this course. DATE

People Problems? Hope Can Help! I

f you’ve ever seen the film The Horse Whisperer, you may recall a scene where the character Tom Booker (played by Robert Redford) is asked by a prospective client, “I’ve heard you help people with horse problems.” Tom replies, “Truth is, I help horses with people problems.” According to Hope Cogen of High Hopes Dog Training, the same can be said about her classes. They’re designed to help people understand their dogs while at the same time helping dogs better understand their people. “I often feel like the dogs look at me and say, thank you for coming and helping my human,” says Cogen. “Most dogs prefer structure, guidance and feedback and they’re happy with that. As soon as we provide structure in their routine, most dogs are happy to comply.” Hope has been in the dog training business for nearly 15 years. She began her professional career as an elementary school teacher in South Florida. After taking in two rescue dogs, Hope became fascinated by the similarities between teaching dogs and teaching kids. “My philosophy and style became focusing on positive rewards for the right behavior, rather than how to correct or stop bad behaviors,” says Hope. “Positive reinforcement training is something proven to be scientifically effective, and makes the process more enjoyable. Training a dog is something the whole family can do, even kids. People can bond with their dog in the process.” After running a successful business in Florida for nearly a decade, Hope’s family moved to the Roanoke Valley. At first she wasn’t sure if people in this area would be looking for dog training, but she quickly discovered

a special niche among dog owners here. According to Hope, dogs in Florida are often confined to the home due to the frequent hot weather and cultural attitudes. Here in southwest Virginia, dogs are viewed more as part of the family. “People like to participate in activities with their dogs, and include them in hiking and festivals or bring the dog to a soccer game,” says Cogen. “For training purposes we find dogs need a higher level of training and social interaction to go out in public. In this area we often find dogs have to strike a balance between being a country dog chasing chickens in the woods, and a city dog where they’re asked to sit at a street side café. We can train the dog to go back and forth between these environments.” After you sign up for a dog training course, don’t be surprised if you meet Hope’s own canine companion, Spartacus. He’s a three year old

Pit Bull mix with a Canine Good Citizen certification, a calm demeanor and a positive attitude. Hope brings her dog to schools to talk about dog safety, and uses him in training with other dogs to introduce the concepts of proper greeting and socialization. Spartacus was a rescue dog, found tied to a rail and on the list to be euthanized. Now he’s living proof that with good training almost any dog can learn to be a positive contributor to the family.

With courses at Green Ridge Recreation Center and Brambleton Center, High Hopes Dog Training is now one of the area’s most trusted sources for classes on dog obedience. This winter, Hope has revised her curriculum to be based on experience rather than age. Dogs younger than six months can participate in Puppy Kindergarten, and dogs older than six months can choose between beginner, intermediate or advanced classes based on their abilities and comfort level.

“I love that I get to be a part of people’s journeys with their dogs and I can be a component of making their shared life even better. I also love working with rescue dogs that may

My techniques help teach families how to make each dog the best they can be.” Bobbi Miller is director of the Chesed Foundation, a dog and cat rescue group. She’s worked with Hope several times over the past few years, both professionally and with her own rescue dogs. According to Miller, Hope Cogen’s unique training methods are both effective and compassionate. “Hope is able to clearly identify the training issues and apply her knowledge and experience to each situation,” says Miller. “Hope tailors the process for each dog and each unique family dynamic. behavior and body language, and to properly communicate with them in a manner they understand. The biggest problem people have is they don’t understand what the dogs are trying to say.” Hope doesn’t profess to being a Dog Whisperer, but with a little help she can help get both two legged and four legged members of your family working together. “It’s called dog training but there’s a whole lot more people training because we speak a different language,” says Hope. “My goal is to come up with a way you can speak in a way the dog will understand. At the end of the class, a lot of participants say you’re training me more than the dog!”

Valentines Dance

Celebrates 30 Years

T

The Valentine’s Dinner Dance is presented as a ‘second prom’ event, with a King and Queen of Hearts, posed photos, and dancing to live music. Many participants did not attend their high school prom, so this event holds special meaning. The dance has grown to welcoming over 300 people with disabilities and their care providers, if needed. From formal dress to jeans and a t-shirt, all are welcome to have a wonderful time with their friends and enjoy the night. The dance has had a positive impact on people with disabilities as from as far as Martinsville. Participants Cassie and David have been coming for the past 16 years. “The dance means a lot to me, you all put on a great night. We look forward to coming to the dance every year. It is fantastic, you do a wonderful job.” Chas Colley, DDM Manager at HopeTree Family Service agrees, “Our participants look forward to this event all year and enjoy dressing up and attending this special occasion in such an elegant setting as The Hotel Roanoke. We are forever grateful to the staff who have made this affair possible and memorable for all these years.” The Valentine’s Dinner Dance would not be possible without the support of some pretty wonderful people. Roanoke Valley Junior Women’s’ Club has been supporting the dance since 2009. They have volunteered to create center pieces, donated funding for scholarships, and taken and printed photos at the dance. Camp Easter Seals has donated the Grand Door Prize, which in 2014 was a beautiful Fender acoustic guitar. GLOW NIGHT Splash Into the Biggest Pool Party Of The Year!

W

hen Green Ridge aquatics staff sat down last year to brainstorm a glow night at the indoor pool, they were hoping for a good crowd. They were shocked when visitors lined up out the door to take part in the festivities. An at-capacity attendance of nearly 250 showed up to see the pool decked out in a neon glow with the lights turned low.

family just makes your child look up to you and appreciate you and what you do for them even more.”

The event was so popular that staff members say it was an easy decision to bring back the program this February. “Last year was an experiment, but I think so many people came because it was a good value,” says aquatic program coordinator Paige Hickey. “We had fun games, and it was a fantastic way to get people out of the winter doldrums and into the water.”

The Green Ridge indoor pool is an ideal place for the event, because it’s shallow water and zero-depth gradual entry mimics that of an actual sand beach. That makes it easy for even non-swimmers to feel comfort-

There’s no age limit for participation. Green Ridge head lifeguard Mindy Sink says that even at age 20 she can’t help but be drawn into the unique combination of glow sticks and water with the lights turned low. “Glow sticks are great because you can be any color you want. They bring out the kid in me.”

New this year, they’re adding more games for preschool aged kids, as well as additional glow night décor, including the use of glow in the dark paint. Many of last year’s favorite activities will return, including races in the lap lanes, water balloon challenges, and diving for pennies. According to Paige, it’s all about spending time together as a family. “Kids love to see their parents get silly and have a good time. They love to know that their parents were also kids once. Doing it as a On February 27 we’re turning the lights down for even more pool fun!

able splashing around. February is usually one of the coldest times of the year here in the Roanoke Valley. The glow night event is a great way to imagine you’re on a tropical island on a warm summer evening. “It feels different with the lights down,” says Paige. “It almost feels like you’re swimming outside on a summer evening. You forget there’s a roof above your head. For me, swimming outside in the summer is the best thing in life... It’s my happy place!”

“Glow sticks bring out the kid in me.” The event runs from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Friday, February 27. Admission is just $5 at the door. Green Ridge members are free. Reserve your space in advance by registering online or over the phone for course #26518. Call (540) 7776300 for more information.

Safety - Basic swimming is an important life skill that will benefit your child from day one. Whether you’re headed to Smith Mountain Lake or sending them to summer camp, water will be part of your child’s every day life all the way through adulthood. Quality - Green Ridge Recreation Center uses American Red Cross standards to guarantee quality instruction. Your children are advanced through progressive levels with a checklist of required skills. Socialization - Lessons are a great opportunity for kids to socialize with other youth their age in a stress-free environment.

Splash

Jump in, float, and swim! Children will continue to build upon the skills introduced in Big Ripples and become more proficient in their swimming abilities. Children in Tidal Waves should be comfortable with their face in the water and be independent. This class is designed for a 4-5 year old who is confident in the water and not a beginner. They will learn arm strokes and kicking with freestyle and back stroke and be introduced to rotary breathing. To pass this class a child must be able to float on their back and stomach independently. Water safety is highly emphasized in this class and discussed at every opportunity. Children will move directly to Level 2 after completion of this course.

Top Five Reasons For Swim Lessons:

Development - Swimming is a beneficial form of exercise, working the large muscles of the body and honing gross motor skills which are important for coordination. Fun - Lessons are a great way to splash around in the pool with friends. The skills your children learn will carry over to other fun activities like birthday parties.

Level III Lessons

Now you’re really a swimmer! Swimmers in this class are very confident and comfortable in the water. Dolphin kick and breast stroke are introduced but there is a lot of emphasis on rotary breathing and being able to swim the distance of our lap lane without stopping. By the time a participant passes this level they will have achieved basic water competency skills according to the new American Red Cross standards. Safety lessons become more in depth and cover more topics.

38

Participants in this class will focus on developing all the strokes. Upon completion of this class participants will have been introduced to butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall. There will be a focus on swimming the length of the pool and improving rotary breathing skills in order that efficiency is improved. This class is appropriate for the young or new swim team member that wants to continue to improve. Don’t worry... safety lessons continue.

Adult Stroke Technique

Jump in and take this opportunity to increase your swimming efficiency and gain confidence. This is a class intended for those who would like assistance with improving their stroke technique, breathing pattern, and endurance. We welcome those who are looking to improve their basic strokes, become a fitness swimmer or train for a triathalon. AGES

New Year Resolution 12 Months 12 Hikes M

eet Tara Poelzing. She’s got a Master’s degree in recreation with a concentration in environmental interpretation, holds certifications as an environmental educator and a Virginia Master Naturalist, and she’s arguably Explore Park’s biggest fan.

Tara moved to Roanoke two years ago to raise a family, after a career as a naturalist in Salt Lake City, Utah and Cleveland, Ohio. An avid fan of the great outdoors, Explore Park was the first place she took her family when they arrived here. Now she’s proud to be a naturalist on staff with Roanoke County. According to Tara, in a short amount of time our valley feels like home. “The people are comfortable, nice, friendly and it’s ridiculously gorgeous. I feel like the mountains are accessible here. Being outdoors is just part of daily life. In the evening you just throw your boots on, pack the kids into the car and just go. You don’t have to travel far to get out, and after walking five minutes you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.” Starting this winter, Tara is putting her extensive knowledge of the great outdoors to work with a new series of nature hikes at her favorite park. She’s particularly excited to introduce a program she calls 12 Months – 12 Hikes. Participants are invited to join her

on a guided nature walk on one Saturday per month, examining the wildlife and ecosystems of the same trail at different times throughout the year. “It’s a different hike every time, because so much happens so quickly in the natural world,” says Tara. “If you don’t come out of your home for a few days you can miss something. The wild flowers will be different, the foliage will be different, active animals will be different, and vistas will be different. That’s the cool thing about living in a place with seasons. If you’re tired of hiking in a certain type of weather it will change. It’s about new discoveries every time.” You don’t have to join Tara on the hike every month, but if you do your family is guaranteed to learn something new on each trip. The first hike in the series is Saturday, January 24.The trip is approximately one to two miles of easy to moderate terrain. Since this is a winter hike, remember to dress in layers and wear closed toed shoes or hiking boots. Not sure about hiking in the winter? Check out our top 8 reasons to hike in the winter on the next page. The best part about hiking with Tara Poelzing is that you come away with knowledge you can use when you hike on your own. “One of the things I like to do when I take people out on a hike is help them learn what to look for,” says Tara. “I don’t just point things out. I teach them what clues to look for to figure out what’s happening. I’m using my skills to help people look more closely and find new things for themselves.”

See the next page to find out how to sign up!

We’ve put together our top 8 reasons to go for a hike when the weather is cold. • No bugs – Leave the bug spray at home, folks! • Better vistas – Without leaves on the trees you can see greater distances and get a better look at the rocky terrain. • Bird watching – Get better views of the sky at a time of year when birds are particularly active. • Tree identification – Learn to identify trees like the pros do, by the bark instead of the leaves. • No crowds – Enjoy the solitude of nature without the noisy hikers in your way. • Active wildlife – Not all species are hibernating this time of year. • Wear your cute scarf – Accessorize in a way that you can’t in the summer heat. • Post-hike relaxation – Everyone knows that warming up in front of a fire after hiking feels great in the winter, especially when you’ve earned the treat.

Budding Naturalist

New!

Roanoke County’s very own naturalist is bringing the outdoor fun to you this winter! Bring your Budding Naturalist for age-appropriate experiential lessons that touch on their wintertime questions. Run a few errands or stay with your child as they enjoy stories, art, outdoor investigation, and social time with other preschoolers-all while learning about their natural world. Remember to dress your child to spend a little time outside. Closed toe shoes and jackets required. Choose from these options:

Explore

1) Winter Trees - What do trees do all winter? Why do some trees lose their leaves while others keep them? We’ll take a closer look and find that trees have a lot to tell us.

44

2) Observations in Nature - Winter can be one of the best times to notice the details in nature. Without leaves blocking our view, we can see farther, and we can see more. What a great time to engage all of our senses for natural science investigation. 3) Animal Adaptations - What happens to all the animals during winter? How do the animals stay warm and find food? We’ll answer these pressing questions and make some of our own discoveries about how adaptations work.

This New Year’s resolve to get out on the trail at least once a month, all year long. Join us as we’ll travel the same trail each month so we may experience how this forest grows and changes over time. This scenic, two and half mile hike will lead us down to the Roanoke riverfront and onto the Blue Ridge Trail, all at Explore Park. Please wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Enjoy this fun day in Draper, VA where you will be enchanted by the Draper Mercantile, affectionately called ‘The Merc.’ This historic building constructed in the 1800s was a community gathering place where people shopped for just about everything and shared stories around the pot-bellied stove. In the past it housed a barber shop, a blacksmith, the post office, and a dress shop. It ceased being a general store decades ago, leaving the structure in bad need of repairs. The present owners, Debbie and Bill Gardner purchased the Merc five years ago and invested a million dollars towards its renovation. They have added a restaurant, a shop featuring local foods plus hard to find gourmet items, they also have local eggs, local honey, cheese, produce and naturally raised local meats. In the afternoon, you will enjoy a guided tour of the Wilderness Road Museum in Newbern, Virginia which exhibits artifacts and documents highlighting the 19th-century life along the Wilderness Road. Fee includes van transportation, tour fee to Museum and tour escorts. Lunch is on your own at the Blue Door Cafe located in the Draper Mercantile.

Explore Park O

ur Visitor Center is closed for the winter, but Explore Park still has over 14 miles of trails available to hike, walk, bike and discover. Take a look at the map below, or download your own copy on our new website: www.ExplorePark.org. Call (540) 387-6078 ext. 0 This season is filled with guided trail hikes with our staff naturalist (see page 44), and we’ve already started planning for summer programs (see next page). While you may not see much activity going on at the park over the next few months, Roanoke County is currently working on a formal master plan to guide development at the facility. This plan will combine market research with input collected from citizen and stakeholder focus groups. We look forward to sharing the results with you by next fall. Historic Berry Hill plantation has recently been restored to its historic grandeur.

Located in the town of South Boston is one of the area’s oldest hidden treasures. This stately Greek revival mansion, steeped in history, is more than two centuries old. The beautiful main house has been carefully restored to its original grandeur and is listed on the National Historic Landmark register. As you travel up the tree lined drive, you’d almost expect Scarlett O’Hara to slip through the massive columns and glide down the stairs to meet you. Berry Hill was originally part of a land grant from the English crown to William Byrd in 1728. Byrd sold the estate and it has changed hands many times thru the years. Some of the more notable owners include Benjamin Harrison and General Edward Carrington, a Revolutionary War hero. It was also the seat of one of one of the most successful tobacco plantations in the region. The estate itself has 17 rooms and a great entrance way which is flanked with an impressive cantilever double staircase. The massive mahogany staircase has intrigued engineers for many decades as it seems to float to the second floor with no visible support. Your guided tour is by a local historian who will amaze you with remarkable facts and stories that cannot be found in any history book. In the afternoon, we travel to Chatham for a tour of Chatham Hall, an all girls college prep school. The highlight is Saint Mary’s Chapel and its beautiful stained glass windows. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, bus, lunch at Berry Hill and tour escort. FEE
