Dear friends and neighbors,
Move
W
inter is an exciting time for Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, as we work to create recreation opportunities to keep your family active while it’s cold outside. This magazine features hundreds of ways to MOVE, SPLASH, LEARN and EXPLORE our beautiful valley. This is also an exciting time for the department as we work to create a master plan for Explore Park. We’re grateful for the strong support shown from our community as we have collected public input. This fall we received over 1,200 surveys and spoke to many of you in person at a series of community meetings. Stay tuned for a finished plan by March. I’ve been coming almost 2 years now. I’d had two knee replacements and couldn’t walk. They had all the equipment needed to rehabilitate me. The staff is always helpful and the views are good.
Submitted by Mary Hardin
Two years ago I became the care provider for my brother, John Blackburn. He had recently moved here from Missouri, and was totally dependent on a walker after back surgery. I was already a member of Green Ridge and knew his recovery would improve by joining the center. Watching John progress from using a walker to using the elliptical has been so encouraging. When he first started, he would walk one lap on our track. He slowly progressed to two, three, four laps until completing a mile. He kept all of us aware of how many laps he was walking each day. Now when John comes in, he heads straight to the elliptical and goes full force for almost an hour! John has been a ray of sunshine to all of us here at Green Ridge. His drive and motivation is inspiring to not only myself, but our members as well. We’ve had lots of encouragement from the friendly and knowledgeable staff, and all his new Green Ridge friends, he made great progress and flourished!! He has lost 5 inches in his waist size and is about 40 pounds lighter. The walker is long gone! Green Ridge is one of John’s favorite places to go, and his favorite machine is the Elliptical. We think Green Ridge WILL change your life and we recommend that you give it a try!

Keeping Active in Cold Weather Tips for All Ages Article Provided By: Laura Mitchell of
W
hen the leaves and temperatures begin to fall, many people envision a winter’s worth of curling up by cozy fires, cooking traditional comfort foods and binge-watching holiday movies. But increased food intake and decreased activity can have a cumulative effect, resulting in habits and health changes that last beyond the winter months. Don Mankie, a registered dietitian with Carilion Clinic’s Dining and Nutrition Services, suggests that decreased motivation to be active might result as much from unhealthy winter diets as from winter temperatures. He recommends assessing your “food environment” to determine whether your comfort foods are contributing to your decreased motivation and activity. “Start at the grocery store,” he said. “Look at your cart before you check out and see if it has more processed foods or more your intake of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.” The processed foods might be contributing to that sluggish feeling that keeps you from going to the gym. “Reading labels is important,” he says, “but it’s more important to eat more foods that don’t have labels at all.” Mankie emphasizes that changes don’t have to be drastic. “If you are less motivated to cook healthy foods,” he said, “it could help to simplify your meal preparation. Maybe use a crockpot; you don’t have to spend your limited daylight hours inside cooking.”

With a healthy winter diet in place, consider some of the following winter activity suggestions for kids, working adults and seniors. Kids In general, kids follow their parents’ and caregivers’ leads when it comes to physical activity. If you’re active, they’ll be active. Try some of these ideas to make winter exercise fun: • Dance—turn the music up and get down! See who can come up with the silliest dance moves. • Build an obstacle course—make it out of pillows and sheets and such imaginary hazards as alligators and sharks. • Pay to play—indoor playgrounds such as Salem’s Launching Pad Trampoline Park, Roanoke’s River Rock Climbing Gym and the planned ice-skating rink at Elmwood Park will keep your kids in motion. • Play video games—many games, especially those developed for the Wii, are designed to include physical activity. Working Adults It’s not easy to stay active when you arrive at work before sunrise and leave work after sunset. Winter is not too different than summer, though, for workers whose jobs are largely sedentary. • Climb—use the stairs instead of the elevator, and even use them Rocky-style for a workout. • Walk—add a few minutes to your commute and park in the farthest possible space so you can walk the remaining distance to work. Go outside at least once during the workday and walk around your building, parking lot or block.

• Join a gym—most gyms open early and stay open late, so exercising before or after work is usually possible. • Exercise at your desk—run in place, do jumping jacks and try chair-based neck and shoulder stretches. Seniors Reduced activity over a long period can affect seniors differently than other people. Among the benefits of exercise for seniors is maintaining muscle mass and improving mood. • Learn—take advantage of community-sponsored arts, fitness and dance classes. • Walk—add a few layers and head outside, or keep warm and dry by walking with a group at the local mall. • Stretch—yoga classes are available throughout our region at gyms and private studios. • Volunteer—stacking cans at the food pantry or delivering cards and flowers to hospital patients can be both physically and socially rewarding. Most of these options are suitable for all ages. And in our region, the most time-honored winter activity is to bundle up and take a hike. This time of year offers the added benefit of solitude, as fewer hikers are on the trails than in warmer weather. Whether you stay inside or head outside, the healthy—and fun—thing to do is keep moving.

Martial arts can help improve your balance and coordination at any age.
T’ai Chi (T’ai Chi Chuan)
Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T’ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as ‘Meditation in Motion’ because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the naural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one’s health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T’ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Brambleton Center has a six week program. Green Ridge program is four weeks long. Instructor: Denis Spencer. AGES

Great Beginnings is a five week instructional program targeted to four, five and six year old boys and girls. The program’s goal is to help prepare children for the challenges of organized basketball in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition. Each child, along with his or her parents, work together to learn basic motor skills needed to successfully move on to more organized sports in years to come. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skill stations are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in youth sports. The program will also help develop the child’s motor and cognitive skills as well as provide wonderful social interaction. Participants will need to bring their own basketball.

The Art of German Cooking... and Eating!
D
r. Barbara Hassell spent the first 20 years of her life in Stuttgart, Germany before moving to the United Sates, but in many ways she never really left. She continues to be an ambassador of German culture, history, and language through an accomplished academic career. Barbara has been a teacher in Botetourt and Salem Public Schools, as well as a lecturer at Hollins University, Roanoke College and Virginia Tech. She is also a published author, with a variety of titles ranging from history and religion to nature. Until this fall, Barbara had never publicly shared her in-depth knowledge and passion for cooking. That’s when a friend encouraged her to consider teaching a class for Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Growing up as the oldest girl in a single parent household with five other siblings, Barbara learned to cook German food at an early age. She learned everything from her mother, who she still refers to as “one of the world’s greatest cooks.” Dr. Hassell has also had formal training in both French and Tuscan cuisine. Now with three cooking classes under her belt, she can’t contain her excitement about the program.

“The enthusiasm and engagement of the class was amazing. I set up stations and had each participant rotate through them preparing each menu item. We’re not just showing, but I have them do everything. Everyone participated and was eager to learn. It was just magical!”
“Sharing good food with family is the German way! ” According to Barbara, the cooking and sharing of food are important pieces of German culture. She calls it “gemütlichkeit,” a term for which there is no English equivalent. Roughly translated it means a warm and pleasant feeling commonly associated with the gathering of friends around good food and drink. Barbara remembers her initial shock in coming to America and seeing Public Service Announcements on television encouraging families to spend time around the dinner table. “Why wouldn’t you do that?” she says. “Sharing good food with family is the German way! Even in today’s fast paced society, they still maintain that eating ritual.”
We carry quality items for the kitchen, the room that gathers everyone.
So far the German cooking classes have been a huge success, and even drawing repeat participants to try new menu items. Nancy Hurdle, who participated in all three fall classes, says she signed up because she has a German friend and wanted to learn to cook for her. “The best part was the eating!” she says. Beth Simmons agrees, saying “We made sure to come to class on an empty stomach this time.” Beth was herself a German exchange student, and has hosted our German students in her own home over the years. She says the class was just what she needed to share good food with her family. “When my son came back from UVA, I was able to cook it for him and he loved it. It was a special treat. I was even able to make a conversion of the recipe to be gluten free.”
302 Market Street, Downtown Roanoke (540) 769-8181
www.LadlesAndLinens.com
Each class starts with a brief introduction of the menu and cultural background behind it. From there participants go straight to the kitchen and divide into three stations. The night we visited the first group was seasoning sauerkraut, while the second mixing ingredients for the spätzle and the third began shaping the dough for the apple strudel. Strangers only moments before, these eager classmates began to work together with the efficiency of true master chefs. The end result was an extremely tasty feast that according to their instructor’s unusual German expression was “So good I just want to sit in it!” Barbara prides herself on flexible recipes. “They’re not exact,” she says “so each one turns out slightly different.” Being a teacher with over 20 years of experience also comes in handy. Participants come away with hands-on skills and a printed menu to keep. Each program focuses on different traditional items, and considering the number of repeat visitors, her methods work very well. As for the future, Dr. Hassell has thought about expanding her offerings to include other styles of international cuisine. “I love it!” she says. “As a teacher we love to teach students that want to learn. I’ve found that here and it’s my greatest reward. As long as I have people willing to learn I will be teaching.” Explore Recreation Magazine • Winter 2016

This popular, easy-to-use social media allows you to set up any number of online bulletin boards - Recipes, Design Favorites, and Landscaping Ideas, for example - so you can ‘pin’ the things you love to the boards for quick access in the future. During this class you will learn how to set up an account, follow friends and businesses on Facebook, and, of course, how to ‘pin’ your finds. Prerequisites: • Basic computer and Internet skills • Current email address or Facebook account & passwords to each. • A basic understanding of computers is a must! AGES

What Makes Green Ridge Staff The Best! W
guards must be able to recognize a guest in distress within 10 seconds, and reach them within 20 seconds.
“A friend asked me if I was happy here, and I said I’m thrilled. I love the facility and I enjoy the camaraderie. It’s a place I can be proud of because it’s clean, friendly, and boasts a strong safety record.”
The aquatics team at Green Ridge follows Jeff Ellis and Associates standards for pool safety, which are used by water parks world-wide and rank among the highest safety record in the nation. Not only do lifeguards watch the water differently, but they’re also held accountable for their training year round. The facility is audited by the program several times per year through several unannounced observances. During these times the guards are critiqued both individually and as a team, and poor performance comes with consequences.
hat is Green Ridge Recreation Center? We’ve heard it described as a health club, a gym, or simply a municipal pool. For Aquatics Specialist Paige Hickey, it’s much more than that.
Paige knows better than most people, because she helps oversee one of region’s safest and most unique aquatics areas. Not convinced? Next time you visit, take a look at the lifeguards. The first thing you’ll notice is that many of them are walking. They’re patrolling a route that enables them to see all angles of the pool. Each guard covers an assigned zone, and each zone overlaps to ensure maximum coverage. The next thing you’ll see is a little more subtle. Watch their eyes! The guards are tasked with actively scanning three different levels in the water. On top they’re watching for signs of struggling in the water. In the middle, they’re watching for movement to see who is swimming or who has stopped. Finally, they’re scanning the bottom to look for anyone who may have sunk. The

“The benefit of the audit is knowing that we must strive to meet their required standards at all times in order to continue using their life guard program,” says Paige. “It’s changed my outlook on water safety as a whole. Guards need to be more active.” Lifeguard Caitlyn Hickey also sees the value in the pool’s safety procedures. “I realize the blessing Ellis training has given Green Ridge because I feel safer here than anywhere else. Plus, guests see us working, interacting and looking at the water instead of being a zombie in a chair.” Caitlyn (22) and her sister Brigid (16) both work with their mother Paige at Green Ridge Recreation Center. According to Caitlyn, the lifeguards all call her the “aquatics mom.” Her office drawer always seems to have whatever unique item is needed, whether they’re looking for a glue stick or a safety pin. More importantly, she provides a mentoring role for both her daughters and other young staff members.
“I expect them to maintain the same standards I do,” says Paige. “Hopefully at the same time I am teaching them how important it is to have a high standard and showing them a good work ethic. It’s also nice to spend some additional time with my kids.” Brigid says she feels like she has to be at the top of her game with her mom watching, but that the job has helped her build important life skills such as customer service. “You’re always interacting with people, even if it’s something as simple as helping a guest with a life jacket or giving a swim test.”
“Saving lives is the most important thing we do everyday” Caitlyn is a recent Christopher Newport University graduate who has worked at Green Ridge on and off while going through school. In recent months she has expanded her role outside of the pool to other areas of the facility. “I’ve enjoyed working here,” she says. “I’m blessed to have a job with the flexibility for school. It’s a blessing to have my family employed here and we’ve found another family through this.” All three members of the Hickey family say that employment at Green Ridge Recreation Center has brought them closer together. Perhaps more than the high safety standards in the pool, or the state-of-the-art wellness equipment upstairs, Green Ridge is unique. f the family friendly environment fostered here. It’s a facility that puts the safety its customers first – but family fun is a

Celebrate your child’s independence in the water. This is the first class that children participate in the lesson without a caregiver. They must be comfortable separating from their parents and be able to follow safety rules. Children are encouraged to develop arm strokes, kicking, floating, and submerging independently. Safety lessons will be more in depth. The class is geared towards beginner swimmers.
Tidal Waves
Jump in, float, and swim! Children will continue to build upon the skills introduced in Big Ripples and become more proficient in their swimming abilities. Children in Tidal Waves should be comfortable with their face in the water and be independent. This class is designed for a 4-5 year old who is confident in the water and not a beginner. They will learn arm strokes and kicking with freestyle and back stroke and be introduced to rotary breathing. To pass this class a child must be able to float on their back and stomach independently. Water safety is highly emphasized in this class and discussed at every opportunity. Children will move directly to Level 2 after completion of this course. AGES

AQUA AWESOME Taking Kickboxing to the Pool

” ust because you’re in the water, it doesn’t mean that you won’t break a sweat,” warns Aqua Kickboxing instructor Chris Russ. “It just feels different because you’re sweating on your forehead and the rest of your body doesn’t feel it. Don’t forget to bring a bottle of water to class.” Chris Russ has been teaching aquatic exercise classes at Green Ridge Recreation Center for the past five years, and his favorite program is Aqua Kickboxing. He says it’s a lot of fun to put on the weighted gloves and throw punches at the water. “It’s the perfect ending to a stressful day. Most people are surprised that we’re actually throwing punches in the water and the difference of the feel throwing punches in the water compared to throwing them on land. If you’ve ever been to the ocean and you run through and kick at the waves. Just running through you have that resistance. Until you actually experience it in a class most people don’t understand that feeling.” Participants typically range in age from 30 to 70, and they come for a variety of reasons. Karl Vance is 66 years old and has been coming to Green Ridge four days a week for several years. Regular exercise routines in the wellness area were beginning to cause him pain, so his doctor recommended aquatic exercise. Now he enjoys a workout pain free, and is completely off medication. “I can hold my arms over my head like I couldn’t before,” he says. “You don’t think you’re doing much but you can see it later when you’re doing something at home. Chris is dedicated and always out there. He makes the class fun even if you have to work hard while you’re there.”

Instructor Chris Russ (left) and the rest of the Friday night kickboxing crew show off their wrist weights.
Chris Russ has a natural gift for teaching, strengthened by 15 years as a 1st grade teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School. He first came to Green Ridge with his family as a member, and started lifeguarding during the summers because he enjoyed the environment there. As a teacher, it was a natural transition to becoming an exercise instructor. “I do it because I enjoy helping people,” he says. “To me there is nothing better than having a participant who struggles through the first class and a month later gets through it like it’s nothing. That means they have made gains and are getting in shape.” The veteran instructor has so much fun at his job that other lifeguards began to ask if he actually got paid to teach the class or just did it for fun. Perhaps it’s a little bit of both. There’s no question that participants in his Aqua Kickboxing classes look forward to coming back every week. According to Chris, aquatic programs are an especially good way to get back into exercising if you have been away from physical activity for a while. It’s easier on your joints, the water helps you balance, and the resistance of the water makes even the act of walking more strenuous without the pain. “People see results,” says Chris. “I have clients that have been sent to aqua classes by their doctors because of health reasons, needing to lose weight and because of joint problems. Running or walking long distances is not an option. They come to my classes and have lost weight, and doctors are surprised. “

Mapping the Future
Explore Park Master Plan Top 10 t’s an exciting time for us here at Roanoke County Parks, Imaster Recreation and Tourism as we work to develop a new plan for Explore Park. Over the past few months
we have been taking public feedback about the future of the facility. This included over 1,200 survey participants, and approximately 230 meeting attendees at four public meetings and twelve stakeholder groups.
Explore
According to Roanoke County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jason Peters, “Explore Park is a unique asset that should first and foremost guarantee a clean, safe, fun, and beautiful environment for citizens to play. We’re relying on public input to guide the process as we work to create a regional attraction that fits into the Roanoke Valley’s outdoor tourism brand, creates a positive economic impact and improves the overall quality of life for our area.” While the final master plan won’t be ready until March, we have been excited by the strong community interest in the project as well as the wealth of ideas received during this process. To get a preview of what you might see in the finished plan, here are the top 10 most frequently recorded comments from our community meetings, ranked in order of popularity. 1) Trails and Connectivity - Participants were interested in the continued development of trails at Explore Park. They wanted to see various levels of difficulty, from paved walking paths for seniors or individuals with disabilities, to mixed use dirt paths with better directional markers. Suggestions were given for multi-use paths including walking, biking and equestrian. Regional connectivity was another often heard theme, including the extension of the Roanoke River
42

Greenway to the park, alternative ways to access the park from downtown Roanoke, and water connections to Smith Mountain Lake. Within the park, participants wanted to see more connectivity to the Bedford County side of the property, whether through recreational use or a bridge connecting the two sides of the river. 2) Overnight Accommodations - Our second most heard topic was the need for overnight accommodations at the park. Solutions suggested included primitive or tent camping, rental cabins, RV parking with associated amenities and a lodge or hotel. 3) Water Access - Roanoke River frontage at the park was recognized as a valuable asset. Participants wanted to preserve the natural beauty of this area while allowing access for fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking. More specific ideas included creating an in-river kayak course, creating a delayed-harvest trout fishery, and improving the put-in/take-out points for boating. 4) Recreation Programs & Education - Participants saw the need for a variety of outdoor programs, especially those dealing with nature education and family recreation. Suggestions included a wide range of guided instructional activities led by Parks, Recreation and Tourism, as well as partnerships with schools and area cultural institutions. 5) Events & Venue Infrastructure - There were many suggestions for reoccurring special events at the park. These ranged from concert series and wine festivals to competitive races. The need was voiced for improved event infrastructure such as an amphitheater.
6) Nature Preservation - Our community places a high value on retaining the natural beauty of the landscape at Explore Park. They were cautious of over-development, yet mindful of opportunities for the public to better experience nature through overlooks, maintenance and overall park design.
WE BRING THE HAPPY CAMPER OUT IN EVERYONE ENO DOUBLENEST HAMMOCKS AND ATLAS STRAPS NOW AVAILABLE AT WALKABOUT OUTFITTER!
7) Shopping & Dining - Many suggestions were made regarding commercial opportunities at the park. Often heard suggestions were a restaurant or brewery at the site. Others wanted to see areas to shop for crafts or be able to purchase or rent outdoor recreation equipment. 8) Adventure Sports - Participants saw the opportunity for adventure-based outdoor recreation to play a large role in the park. This includes activities such as a high-ropes course/zip-line, mountain bike competitions, rock climbing, and shooting sports. 9) Cultural Heritage - A wide variety of comments were received regarding cultural heritage at the park. Many suggestions included the re-purposing of historical buildings on the site for other activities, while preserving history through kiosks or interactive exhibits. Other suggestions included the preservation of our region’s art and music legacy at the park. 10) Destination Attraction - A final theme voiced at the meetings involved creating a quality attraction to bring in tourists from outside our area. This should be a unique feature worthy of repeated visits to the park. Participants were mindful of the need to balance local resident use versus tourist use through a well-balanced mix of recreation amenities. We’re extremely grateful to the thousands of interested participants who took the time to weigh in on the process, and hope to keep the excitement going as we unveil the Explore Park master plan over the coming months. The final document will provide a road map for the future including a site plan, cost model, business plan and utilities plan. It will also align local needs with national trends to help Roanoke County with awareness and advocacy. Old Salem and Tannenberg Organ
Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Old Salem is one of the most authentic living history attractions in the United States. Founded in 1766 by a group of Moravian missionaries the town’s restored and reconstructed buildings present visitors with a view of Moravian life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Your self guided walking tour includes several historic structures staffed by costumed interpreters which include skilled blacksmiths, cobblers, gunsmiths, bakers and carpenters, actually practicing their trades while interacting with visitors. Approximately 70% of the buildings in the historic district are original, making this a truly unique living history museum. Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to the 1800’s Tannenberg Organ. This is the largest organ in existence built by Moravian builder David Tannenberg and your experience includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the hand pumped bellows, and a performance by a professional organist. The historic district covers approximately seven blocks and the sidewalks in some areas are uneven. Please wear comfortable shoes. Lunch is at the Old Salem Tavern. Fee includes all tour fees, lunch, bus transportation and escort. AGES

Miners & Millionaires
Begin your day in the miner’s town of Pocahontas, home to the Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine. Your guided tour will be lead by retired coal miners. You will hear stories of miner’s hardships and the operator’s prosperity as you walk back into the earth and feel the dampness of the mine. Your stop at the Pocahontas Cemetery features graves that are over 100 years old and a mass grave of coal miners killed in the 1884 mine explosion. At St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church you will see ten life-sized murals on the ceiling and walls. In Bramwell, once the home of as many as nineteen coal millionaires, you will tour two homes and the Presbyterian Church. You will also have a stop at the Coal Heritage Interpretive Museum and then onto Pinnacle Rock State Park to see the unusual sandstone formation reaching 3,100 feet above sea level. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket for the mine. Lunch is at the Bramwell Café. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, step-on guide, lunch, bus transportation and escort. AGES
