Dear friends and neighbors, We’re excited to welcome 2017 with some fantastic new program offerings to keep your family healthy and active during the cold winter months. Over the past few months we’ve worked hard behind the scenes to make some service improvements. Green Ridge Recreation Center’s wellness area has been revitalized with hundreds of new pieces of exercise equipment. If you haven’t been lately, I encourage you to check out the high-quality and technologically equipped circuit machines, treadmills and free weights now available. When you sign up for a program, you’ll also notice that our department has refreshed our registration software for the first time in decades. Public facing improvements include better online functionality such as online account updating and online membership purchase. Please be aware that you may need to create a new account when you sign up (details on page 7). We hope you’ll join us as we continue to move forward and further our mission of providing quality recreation experiences here in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Sincerely,

Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism

WHY MEN’S YOGA? I

take yoga because it helps tremendously with my flexibility and muscle soreness from the work I do; it gives me time to decompress from daily life”, says Chris, a 26 year-old Roanoke County EMS/ Firefighter. Chris started taking yoga last summer and has seen incredible changes since adding yoga to his workout routine. The practice of yoga has been around for quite some time, dating back to thousands of years ago, and there is good reason why it has stuck. The benefits of yoga are vast: increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved energy, respiration, sleep quality; it helps maintain metabolism, weight reduction and can protect joints and muscles from damage. It’s no wonder so many people are taking yoga today. Mentally, it helps with focus, meditation and relaxation. After a long day of work, yoga provides all the benefits that people need to unwind from the day. In fact, yoga is so popular, that many men are starting to join classes. However, if you look around a typical yoga class, you find way fewer men than women. For some men, this may not be a problem, but for others, this may be what’s holding them back from trying yoga. Feedback from men in the community suggested this may be a contributing factor to not signing up for a yoga class, so the Brambleton Center created

a remedy for this. A class especially designed for men and the muscles they need to stretch and tone, Practical Yoga for Men has had booming success since its implementation this past summer. Since taking the class, a 70 year-old student said, “I have better agility and flexibility; I take the class specifically for men because there is more exertion in the class and more overall body toning. I like the physicality of the men’s class structure”. Men in the class have also cited “increased core stability”, “recovery after tough workouts”, “injury prevention though increased flexibility” and “getting a mental break” as convincing benefits of taking the class. “As I get older, it’s important to stretch regularly and work on my balance. I like the strengthening component of it and, health wise, I just feel better”, explained a 62 year-old participant about why he continues to take the class.

“Personally, yoga has done so much for me through the years; I started practicing back in college when I had a severe SI joint injury...” “I started this class for several reasons, one of which was that I wanted to create an environment where men would feel comfortable doing yoga. I’ve found

that men have different reasons for wanting to try yoga and want to stretch and tone different muscles”, explained instructor Abby Reed, on why she started the class. “Personally, yoga has done so much for me through the years; I started practicing back in college when I had a severe SI joint injury. I’ve found that when I practice regularly, it naturally keeps my body aligned. I physically and mentally feel better after a class. I can’t recommend it enough to others.” Currently, Practical Yoga for Men is the first of its kind in the Roanoke Valley. “I got the idea from a gym I worked at previously and they had some success. I thought to myself, why not bring it back to the Roanoke Valley?” It’s a good thing she did, as the class has continued to grow each session. The class is specifically designed to only last 45 minutes, with no in-depth meditation at the end. “I like to use the entire 45 minutes to work and stretch, there are moments when the class can meditate as they stretch, but I have found that men enjoy a shortened class that gets right into the work and flexibility components”. Moral of the story? If you are a man, of any age and experience level, looking to add or enhance to your current workout regimen through yoga, then this is the class for you. Upcoming class: February 28 – April 4, course code #31024. Want to start yoga before with the same instructor? Try “Power Basics”, for men and women, starting January 17 – February 21, course code #31023.

Compliment your current workout or sport with this specially designed yoga class for men. Poses will focus on muscles to increase mobility in the hamstrings, shoulders, hips, lower back and more. Feel energized, stretched and toned after this 45 minute practice. This is a class for all skill levels, beginners welcome. Six week course. Instructor: Abby Reed. AGES

Think karate classes are just something for kids to do during the summer? Think again! Roanoke County has worked with Wado-Ki Karate studio for over a decade, providing a unique no-contract alternative to traditional martial arts programs. We’ve expanded our offerings this winter to include Japanese Karate, Homeschool Karate and Adult Self Defense programs with instruction from 2nd degree black belt David Ginnings. What makes the classes different? Wado-Ki translates to mean “Way of the Peaceful Spirit.” Programs focus on providing options during times of potential conflict.

Save on the brands you love...

Top 10 Skills from David Ginnings Awareness Empowerment Muscle memory Learning to breathe Handling tense situations Physical Stance Avoidance techniques Escape options Body control Psychology of attack What about strikes and kicks? Wadi-Ki teaches you all the karate moves you’d expect, along with some that you might not expect. All the skills are low-impact and low-contact, and all sparring is done in a controlled environment. DID YOU KNOW: An open hand technique can be used to attack or defend. Not only does it provide a less intimidating initial stance, but in some cases can be more effective than a closed fist attack while reducing risk of injury.

TO KNIT OR NOT TO KNIT... E

verywhere you look people are knitting and gifting their special creations to friends, family and strangers alike. Utilizing specialty and locally sourced yarns has also become popular lately, but that’s a whole different course. With a large resurgence in knitting, people are interested now more than ever to see what all the fuss is about! Leah Marlow, our knitting instructor extrodinaire, is a big fan of the centuries old tradition. “What a beautiful thing, we have objects in our house & life that someone else made, and we don’t always think of them as heirlooms. When you pass something onto someone, and they pass it on to someone else, it’s an heirloom and what a great thing they’re able to do!” Two knitting courses are offered this winter through Roanoke County. Leah is the instructor for the Knitting Workshop: Fixing Your Mistakes and Cable

30

Knitting Made Easy. She taught herself how to knit and has 16 years of knitting experience. Couple that with her passion to help people connect and explore their creative talents; she can guide just about anybody into discovering their knack for this trendy hobby.

class is, four weeks. You can do it!“

Knitting isn’t the easiest of all hobbies to quickly pick up. It can be frustrating when you make a mistake

In Cable Knitting Made Easy, participants learn the basics of this classic technique. You’ll learn how

The Knitting Workshop will teach you how to overcome those obstacles through making intentional mistakes in your knitting. Common mistakes involve dropped stitches and accidental yarn-overs.

“It’s a family tradition. You’re making these objects that other people are going to have and use.” and don’t know how to quickly fix it, especially when knitting. You have to have patience with yourself. “I’ll ask them if they believed in the tooth fairy as kids? So if you could believe in the tooth fairy for x amount of years, you can believe in yourself for how long this

to move stitches either forward or behind each other, twist stitches and change their position, and then continue to knit. “When you learn this method, you can make remarkable things because you end up with braided stitches all the way through knitting,” said Marlow.

With this particular program, staff have suggested that class participants be comfortable with casting on and knitting the stockinette stitch. We do offer a beginners knitting course throughout the year as well. So if you’re brand new to knitting and don’t want to jump into these courses without learning some of the basics, then keep an eye out for our spring and fall guides as we will switch up the offerings then. Knitting is a skill that has been passed down from generation to generation. “It’s a family tradition! You’re making these objects that other people are going to have and use,” said Marlow. “Mothers and grandmothers teach their children the basics of knitting at a young age. As long as you remember the basics and are willing to be patient with yourself, you will succeed and pass the tradition along to future generations.”

What’s stopping you? 1. No Time to learn - Although a good excuse, with our instructors you’ll pick it up in no time! Learn once and you’ll be able to invest in your free time for the rest of your life. 2. Isn’t this for old people - False! You can knit at any age! Have you seen those cute beanies they sell for $54 at your favorite locally produced alpaca fur hipster store? You could make your own for a fraction of the cost! 3. No Room for more craft supplies - Good News! Yarn takes up a fraction of the room that traditional craft supplies take up. Plus, it’s super light, so you can store it in an easy to move basket or tote. Knitting on the go is much easier than painting a portrait on a road trip. 4. You’re too busy taking our cooking coursesWhile completely understandable just keep in mind, if you were to take up knitting you could knit yourself a cool coozie for your mason jar smoothies. 5. Too busy staring out the window looking for warmer weather - We hear ya! But how about you pass the time living in the now. You can spend your hours knitting cute scarfs to put on your pets as you wish winter away.

Make a Set of Snow Paint What you will need: Water Squirt or Spray Bottles Food Coloring

Step by Step Directions

1. Pour water into your Squirt Bottles. You can use

spray bottles as well to get a different painting effect.

2. Add the desired amount of food coloring. Gel

food coloring gives you darker colors, while using Kool-aid packets to get your color gives you some fun scenty paint.

3. Put the lid on your bottle and shake. 4. Your snow paint is ready to use! Tips:

Avoid non snow covered areas with this paint. It is a dye and no one wants to come out in the spring to see their deck is now swirled with purple and green blotches. If you’re looking for other fun ways for your kids to get creative this winter check out our paint classes on page 44. Our instructor Katie Reed loves seeing kids get excited about painting! “Our kids paint days are always super fun! We start with a blank canvas and I paint with them step by step, so that they can make their very own masterpieces! The steps are easy to follow and allow the kids to learn how to paint using certain techniques, while also letting their creativity shine through. What always thrills me is how excited they get when they see their finished pieces, its the moment they realize that they are the ones who painted a beautiful picture and did it with minimal help.“ Explore Recreation Magazine • Winter 2017

PICK UP A NEW HOBBY

AND MAYBE A FEW EXTRA FRIENDS

W

inter is a brilliant time to start up a new indoor hobby. Crafts and painting are always fun, but there are only so many walls in your house to hang stuff on. Plus all those craft supplies add up! Give a consumable hobby a whirl this winter!

Like brewing your very own beer! At first, you may believe it takes too much time and training or a background in the industry to become a home brewer. But, as a matter of fact, it can take as little as 30 minutes to create your home brew! For Chris and Fran Arthur, their journey into the home brewing industry was ignited by their background. “My wife and I are chemists,” said Chris Arthur, Store Owner of Blue Ridge Hydroponics & Home Brewing. “I have a forestry degree from Virginia Tech with a concentration in fishery science.” You may wonder how this ties into home brewing. Arthur explained, “The beer includes a little bit of microbiology and gardening, which comes from the forestry from Tech.” The market for home brewing and microbreweries was starting to increase at the time, “So we had this chance,” said Arthur. Taking a chance led the Chris and Fran Arthur to become owners of Blue Ridge Hydroponics & Home Brewing for the past 14 years. According to Arthur, “It is very simple. You can make a great beer by not following the directions, and I’ve made great beers like that.” There are multiple processes when it comes to brewing beer, and you do not have to be a professional to create your own beer. 54 54

The basic kit consists of jugs and siphoning equipment. “We usually start off with something small in your kitchen, like something you would cook spaghetti in to make 5 gallons of beer.” Home brewing can take 30 minutes, 3 hours, or 8 hours to complete. Necessary materials to complete the 30-minute brewing process include malt, water, and a 5 gallon pot. It is a 30-minute process, but takes 14 days to get your alcohol from the primary fermenter. “The 30 minute process is quick, and the beer is really good,” said Arthur. Overall, it is up to the individual to decide on how much time and effort is needed to produce a quality beer. “It’s a dream job,” said Chris Arthur. “It is a great job to be able to help other people do these things at home.” With Chris and Fran’s tour and quick lesson on how to brew your own beer you can begin your new hobby journey this winter! By spring you’ll have a brew you can be proud of and probably a few more friends. The day trip (listed on pg55) includes a private session where you will learn in-depth about the home brewing process. You will also be able to sample beers made by the brewers using the technique and processes taught during the workshop.
