Dear friends and neighbors, If you haven’t taken notice, outdoor recreation in Virginia’s Blue Ridge is booming! From hiking trails and community festivals to bike shops and climbing gyms, our region has a growing reputation as one of the best outdoor communities on the East Coast. For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, the secret is already out. They know the best places for a challenging whitewater paddle, thrilling bike trail ride or horseback adventure; but what about beginners? Surprisingly, there are relatively few places where youth or beginner explorers can get their footing. That’s about to change. Roanoke County’s Explore Park is Your Destination for Exploration. We’re ready to become the starting place for individuals seeking adventure and enrichment in the outdoors, and changes are coming sooner than you may think. Looking to start mountain biking? Join our community meeting series in December (described on page 50) to help us plan a new bike skills facility. Need a nearby camping venue? Overnight camping is coming to the park for the first time this spring, through the support of several new business partners. Want to throw a Frisbee? We’ve got a new 18-hole course opening soon, designed by local enthusiasts. Stay tuned to news of several exciting developments at Explore Park designed to get your family active in the outdoors, and visit www.ExplorePark.org for the latest updates. If you’re visiting the park over the next year, please pardon our dust as things develop. Preservation of natural space is one of our top priorities, and we’ll keep the trails and river access available to the public year round. We hope you’re ready to explore! Sincerely, FEATURED CONTENT OUR FEATURED CONTENT IS HIGHLIGHTED BY OUR LOGO THUMBNAIL.

By: Scott Ramsburg
How does your family get into the “Christmas spirit”? Many families have their own unique holiday traditions. As a child, I fondly remember waking up before dawn to pack everything in the car and drive eight hours from Fredericksburg, Virginia to Springfield, Massachusetts to see my grandparents. I’m probably the only one who gets warm and fuzzy memories while stopping at a rest area on the New Jersey Turnpike. As an adult with a child of my own, it’s often been a struggle to establish consistent holiday traditions for him. One Christmas eve several years ago I distinctly remember my mother stating out of the blue, “I’m really not feeling the Christmas spirit this year… Let’s go to the mall!” The statement came as a surprise to everyone, but since mom’s word is law, to the mall we went. There was certainly no lack of Christmas decorations there, but as far as the spirit goes it didn’t resonate with me. Tom Williams began his Santa career over a decade ago as a mall Santa in the New River Valley. Between the long lines, commercialization and phony photographs, it was an experience he didn’t want to repeat. The following year he was offered a uniquely different Santa gig at a local museum. “I told them yes, but only if I get to do what I want to do,” says Tom. “That’s to tell stories, sing and talk about love, peace, responsibility and caring for others. Those are the things Christmas should be about.” Tom is a different kind of Santa Claus. Early on he learned not to directly ask kids what they want. They’re welcome to bring a list, or speak up on their own about presents. He doesn’t spin yarns about his North Pole workshop unless prompted by parents, believing it can get confusing when the kids wake up on Christmas morning to see store bought packages. Tom sees his mission as interacting with them in a loving and truthful way. “What I do is basically spend time as a person sharing love, truth and wisdom and all that in an informal yet structured way using music and stories. It’s like a virtual story. To combine all that in a setting more like your living room and promoting the non-commercial aspects of Christmas but retaining the tradition is pretty unique.”

EXPLORE RECREATION MAGAZINE • WINTER 2018
Years later, Tom’s version of the Jolly Old Elf has made a lasting impression on countless youth in our area. To many of them, including our family, he’s the “real” Santa! The annual Roanoke County Christmas Tree Lighting is one of several events that Tom keeps on his calendar every year. As a musician he’s especially excited about this season’s theme, A Magical Musical Christmas. “The role of music is the sound of Christmas, the spirit of Christmas through sound,” says Tom. “Music touches the creative part of oneself that rational thinking doesn’t get to. It’s the creative side of Christmas and the spiritual and emotional side of charismas. You listen to a song and past memories of Christmas come, or the tears come. It pulls out those heartfelt aspects of Christmas. It brings back memories of your family and friends and years of history and it’s a continuation onto the next generation.” This year’s free event on Monday, December 4 will feature marshmallow roasting, carols from the Salem Choral Society, a magician, refreshments, a barrel train ride, crafts and more. Hosted by the South County Library, the fun kicks off at 6:30pm, which is a little later than previous years based on attendance volume. The addition of more music this year should only add to the spirit. Reflecting back to my own Christmas spirit dilemma, I’m reminded that the Roanoke County Christmas Tree Lighting has been a tradition for our family since our son was too young to walk. That’s a credit to honesty and commercial-free dignity provided by the event’s organizers, as well as the magic of a different kind of Santa Claus. “It makes my Christmas too,” says Tom. “It keeps Christmas going for me, and if I enjoy it, they will enjoy it. I know these people, and I’m a surrogate for their parents. Because it aligns with their own values, they can take what I’m offering and make it part of their own family traditions.”

It’s that time of year again! Numerous reports are coming in about an outbreak of “Gymtimidation” in our area. What are the symptoms? Low self-esteem… Fear of mirrors… Sweaty palms… Inability to lift heavy objects… Changing the radio station when you hear workout music… Scorn of stationary bicycles… Going out of your way to avoid recreation centers… It seemed like I suffered from the same illness every time I tried to make a New Year’s resolution. Like many of you, I was a proud member of a recreation center for the past seven years (Green Ridge Recreation Center of course), but I rarely worked out. On those occasions when I made it to the gym I would find myself on the elliptical for about 10 minutes before giving up because of either boredom or exhaustion, whichever came first.
Instructor Beth Hoel has been inspiring group exercise classes for the past 11 years, but before that she was just like me. Beth started out reluctantly taking a Zumba class, but stuck to it over the long haul and gradually achieved her goals over two years, with minimal nutritional changes. “I took off 40 pounds,” says Beth. “It was a continuous weight loss and didn’t come right back like it would after a fad diet. I like to tell people about my weight loss because I’ve been there. I’ve been the person in the back trying to learn all the moves. You’ve got to find something you’re interested in and have fun doing! I really found my niche. With each threshold I achieved it was a boost of confidence that made me want to stick with it.” Group cycling classes are now some of Beth’s favorite to teach. This season she’s developed a new program at Brambleton Center designed for people like us who are afraid to take those first steps.
Gymtimidation Symptoms:
Low self-esteem. Fear of mirrors. Sweaty palms. Inability to lift heavy objects. Changing the radio station when you hear workout music. Scorn of stationary bicycles. Going out of your way to avoid recreation centers. A few months ago I tried something I’ve never done before. I took a group exercise class, and it really surprised me! My mental image of these classes had always included grunting weight lifters, ridiculously muscular coaches barking out angry instructions, and hip 20-somethings wearing overpriced running shoes while sporting tightfitting athletic gear. I sheepishly walked into my first class in a pair of khakis and an old tee shirt, ready to get embarrassed. At Green Ridge and Brambleton Center, there’s no need to be gymtimidated.

EXPLORE RECREATION MAGAZINE • WINTER 2018
It’s called Resolution Ride, a beginner cycling program that combines exercise with basic instruction and group personal training. Beth says she starts each program by explaining how you can adjust your RPM (rotations per minute) and resistance settings to get the results you want, like increasing your heart rate to shed pounds or working your muscles to shape and tone. Every exercise routine can be adjusted based on the skill and comfort level of the participant.
“I’m not gonna’ yell at anybody,” says Beth. “I understand that everybody’s fitness level is different and I take that into consideration when teaching a class. Cycle is one of the better ways to start because you can sit down at any point and pedal at your own pace if you don’t think you can keep up. You’re moving and doing the exercise but you can adjust it depending on where you want to be. It’s an individual challenge.” Group exercise classes from Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism offer a non-threatening, risk-free environment to improve your health. Here are my top five reasons for choosing one of our classes to meet your fitness goals. 1) Support Network – As a newbie to the group-ex world, I found myself immediately surrounded by supportive participants who didn’t judge me. Quite the opposite! I was encouraged to keep trying and truly felt missed on days I couldn’t make it to class. 2) Pushing Your Limits – Working out with a group helps you keep pushing through strenuous moments in the routine when you’d stop if nobody was looking. Those are often the most important calorie-burning times of the class. 3) Regular People – Most of Roanoke County’s classes feature a wide range of ages and body types. Folks that are in a class just to “be seen” tend to go to other facilities. 4) Variety – Between Green Ridge and Brambleton Center, there are plenty of classes to choose from! If danceexercise isn’t your cup of tea, choose an aerobic program. If you’re not into riding stationary bikes, challenge yourself to a Barre Class which uses ballet-style techniques to work those muscles. 5) Consistency – Attending a class regularly commits you to a dedicated workout time, which can help you stick to your goals. Keeping it going is the key to success. For the instructor, creating a group exercise class that people want to keep coming back to takes more work than meets the eye. Beth says preparation can take a few hours, including listening to music to find tunes with the right speeds, charting a workout with the right mix of warm up and cool down techniques, and finally memorizing the routine. Even if the class doesn’t go exactly as planned, Beth makes the most of it. “Anytime I mess up I tell a joke and get them to laugh at me,” she says. “I make it fun for not only myself but everyone else. Laugher is very important. I love to keep my class smiling and making sure they’re having a good time.” Maybe that’s why Beth’s classes are so popular! She’s found a way to instill confidence and strength, while not taking herself too seriously. Have you ever wondered if the instructor cares whether you show up? The answer is a definite, yes! Beth says she notices when the regulars don’t come back.

Circle Doodles Craft Gather a few smallish circular objects, or just use one, totally up to you! (Try: a quarter or soda bottle cap for tiny circles, or a milk bottle cap, or a potato chip can lid, or even a yogurt plastic lid.) Decide what size paper you would like your art to be on. Hint: smaller circles can take a LONG time if you do small patterns. It might help if you use small circles on a small piece of paper and larger circles on a large piece. You can find sample patterns/designs on Pinterest or this free page can be downloaded at TinyRottenPeanuts.com. Take your circle and draw around it with a dark pen/crayon/marker to make a complete circle. Now move your circle template to another spot and draw another circle. You WANT to overlap the circles, but how you do that is totally up to you! Use crayons, colored pencils, or markers to create a pattern in each empty space that is outlined in black. As you fill in your paper, you can decide if you want to try to fill in the circles using the same patterns or try to fill them in using totally different, never repeating patterns. (This is much harder!) Your completed art piece can be a decoration, a greeting card, a magnet for your refrigerator, a postcard, a bookmark or whatever you would like it to be! This fun craft idea was brought to us by one of our talented craft instructors. Lisa Hoyt is new to Roanoke County programs, but making big impacts already in just two seasons with us. If you haven’t tried one of her soap programs or signed up your kids for one of her many kids programs, then you’re missing out! She’s so excited to be with us and is showing everyone how easy it can be to have fun with art and crafting.

NEVER STOP RIDING Think back to when you first learned to ride a bike. How old were you? Where did you ride? More importantly… Why did you stop? Anthony Duncan is the Atlantic Region Director of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). Covering a territory that stretches from Virginia to Maine, Anthony is dedicated to the growth of outdoor cycling in our region. He believes that one of the most important parts of his job is developing transitional venues for beginner and intermediate level riders. “One of the first major accomplishments you have as a kid is when you learn to ride a bike without training wheels,” says Anthony. “You learn the motions and balance. Eventually you get out of riding because opportunities don’t exist, or you don’t have anywhere to go, or you think it’s something only kids do. “ Anthony has been instrumental in connecting outdoor cycling enthusiasts, land managers and community leaders to develop new places to ride. One of his most exciting new projects is the Bike Skills Park currently in development at Roanoke County’s Explore Park.
48
EXPLORE RECREATION MAGAZINE • WINTER 2018
“What we want to do with this project is lower the barrier to entry for mountain biking,” says Anthony. “There’s no bunny slope for people who want to continue biking into their teenage years, or 20s and 30’s. We want to provide that gateway by building skills development facilities that don’t currently exist. We want them to fall in love with it and we want to provide them with opportunities to ride.” Explore Park is already home to one of the area’s most extensive mountain biking trail networks with over 14 miles of trails. The original trail design was developed by the IMBA in the 1990’s and consisted of beginner, intermediate and advanced level single-track trails. Over time the quality of these trails has eroded to the point that these skill level designations are no longer relevant. Now Roanoke County is working together with IMBA and several local bike advocacy groups to redevelop the biking trails at Explore Park and bring progressive riding opportunities back to our region. Plans are already in place to build a skills park within the 2018 calendar year. “The Explore Park project is going to be very unique,” reports Anthony. “We’re looking at very progressive trail building that goes beyond cross country, back country and single track. It will all be very purpose-built. The project is also unique in how accessible it will be to a large population. Right now there’s not a lot that exists that’s going to replicate what we’re doing here.”
It’s all part of a larger community effort to make Virginia’s Blue Ridge the mountain bike capital of the East Coast. The extensive trail systems at Carvin’s Cove and Explore Park among others have put the region under consideration for an IMBA Ride Center designation. Mountain biking experts from throughout the county converged on our area this month to rank existing amenities, and will soon announce their findings. With the development of a skills area at Explore Park over the next year, potential exists to attract biking enthusiasts from throughout the Nation. According to Anthony, the opportunity to develop purposebuilt bike facilities such as those at Explore Park don’t come along often. “Generally most bike trails are single track trails. These are fun, but there are other facets of biking that land managers traditionally haven’t catered to. The design of the trails themselves determines the type of experience they provide. Traditional trails are legacy trails that have existed for years. They’re pretty narrow and not built specifically with bikes in mind. At Explore Park we have a chance to build from the ground up and create something really special.” One of the proposed amenities at the skills park is called a pump track. That’s a trail system with wooden and dirt structures providing banked turns or obstacles for a mountain bike rider to experience. Another amenity being considered is called a flow-trail. That’s a purpose-built downhill trail optimized for bikes. Another early consideration for the park is a bike playground area designed for youth. “Progressive skill areas are great for new riders,” says Anthony. “They can test and improve their skills and replicate real life experiences on a trail but in a controlled environment. Whatever we build there, it’s gotta have flow. That means the trails have been optimized for bikes. It also means a fun, fast and exciting ride.” Over the past few years, Roanoke County officials have relied heavily on community input to develop the adventure plan for Explore Park. Ongoing public feedback will continue to play a key role while the park develops as an outdoor recreation destination.
Two public meetings have been established to focus specifically on the bike skills amenities. Anyone interested in contributing to the discussion is invited to attend on Tuesday, January 16 at the Brambleton Center at 7:00pm and Thursday, January 18 at the Vinton War Memorial at 7:00pm. Who should attend? See if you meet any of the qualifications on this check list: • Anyone who has ever ridden a bike • Anyone who wants to learn to ride a bike • Anyone who rides a bike regularly • Anyone who hasn’t ridden a bike since they were 12 • Anyone who has a child who rides a bike • Anyone who has a child who might someday ride a bike • Anyone who is interested in weighing in on the development of our region as an outdoor destination • Anyone… There are many reasons you might want to attend a community discussion about bike skills amenity development at Explore Park. That’s because there are many reasons people take to mountain biking for recreation. For Anthony Duncan, working towards the development of bike infrastructure is a life-long passion. “This work is important to me for tons of reasons. It gives me an escape from reality. You’ve got your whole day stuck in an office dealing with life issues. Mountain biking helps you escape for a couple of hours. It relaxes my mind and helps me get out negative energy. It’s exciting too…A different experience every time based on the trail you ride. It’s never the same thing when I’m there.” Why did you stop riding your bike as a kid? The future for biking in Virginia’s Blue Ridge is looking brighter every day. Like they say, once you learn how to ride a bike… You never forget!
