Knittet with air and love - Soft and warm clothes for all ages
VISIT LANULLVA Just 8 km from the Atlantic Road The history of Lanullva In the village of Lyngstad close to the Atlantic Ocean, at the fare edge of Møre & Romsdal county, lived an inventive woman called Brit Vinje Lyngstad. For many years, she worked in the clothing industry. She was educated as an assembly technician and had a strong interest and knowledge of wool and textiles. Already at the age of twelve, she owned her first knitting machine. Brit ran the farm with her husband. At times, she was worried about him. After hard working days on the farm he came home sweaty and cold. Brit developed a special knit pattern that transported the sweat away from the body. Air layers and ventilation formed in the knit pattern helped to give the garments a very good insulation. This meant that he kept warm and dry. Brit was happy. In 1994 she founded the company Vinje Klær AS. The company has been constantly evolving. In 2006 the company changed its name to Vinje Ullprodukter AS, owned and run by Brits daughter Anne Gunn Lyngstad. The underwear manufactured today is in pure merino wool. The collection includes contemporary knitwear for baby, children and adults. The unique knit pattern is maintained in all products developed. Our thriving retail area is a renovated commercial brew from 1882. Welcome to us!

The Atlantic Road
THE ROAD THAT CAN MEND
A BROKEN HEART The Atlantic Road isn't just the Construction of the Century in Norway – according to Lonely Planet, it can even mend broken hearts.

TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
T
oday, the road is one of Norway's biggest tourist attractions, but strong forces fought to prevent the project. The opposition claimed the Atlantic Road would not be worth the effort. However the Atlantic Road is a huge success. Many accolades have been lavished upon this national tourist road – including international ones. Construction of the Century
In 2005, the Atlantic Road was named the Construction of the Century in Norway. The award was sponsored by the construction industry and the national broadcaster NRK in connection with the 100th anniversary of the dissolution of Norway's union with Sweden. The world's best road trip
– The road that crosses this "infamous stretch of ocean" was hailed as the world's best road trip by the British daily The Guardian. In 2006, the newspaper ranked the Atlantic Road ahead of more famous roads in for instance Australia and The Himalayas. The most beautiful car journey
In 2007, the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten asked their readers to vote for Norway's most beautiful car journey among 11 selected alternatives. The Atlantic Road came second, only beaten by the iconic tourist destination Trollstigen by a small margin. Both are located in Møre og Romsdal, so you can easily visit them both in one journey. The world's best place to mend a broken heart. The same year, Lonely Planet's travel guide (Blue List) decided to find the perfect place to go after a break-up. – Hustadvika and the Atlantic Road is the best place to go to contemplate how you got dumped. Preferably in the autumn; the view, wind, waves and cries of the gulls are the perfect medicine, whether you are working through grief or recovering from being dumped, wrote Lonely Planet. Norway's best bicycle trip
In 2010, the impressive road, which zigzags across islands and islets, was named Norway's best bicycle trip. Ut.no and NRK had 7 finalists, but it was the Atlantic Road that got the most votes. The world's best for car testing
In 2011, the British motoring show Fifth Gear informed its millions of viewers that the Atlantic Road is the world's best place for car testing. Today there are hardly any car makes that haven't used or aren't currently using the Atlantic Road as a location for filming their adverts. National tourist road ATTRACTIVE: If you have been dumped, you can visit the Atlantic Road to mend your broken heart.
In 2012, the Atlantic Road was officially named one of only 18 national tourist roads in Norway, and given a status as something of the very best Norway has to offer. 7
THE ATLANTIC ROAD – just as beautiful during a storm as it is during sunset.
Did not want to build
Little local interest
The engineering asphalt artwork from which you can go deep sea fishing by car and catch spawning cod by the roadside was no obvious choice, however. There was a lot of hostility against the construction of what is today one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. – Yes, it was a difficult journey with many obstacles. Environmental concerns and the height of the bridges were the two things that caused the most resistance against the project. There was also opposition at the county council and road administration office, says former mayor of Eide municipality, Oddbjørn Dagfinn Silseth (conservative).
Silseth explains that it wasn't easy to find funding for the project, either: – There was little interest locally, and people were sceptical when it came to buying shares, says Silseth.
One vote majority
Jarle Haga (liberal) was the mayor of Averøy in the early 80s. He reveals that the Atlantic Road was not a project recommended by the head of the county's road administration office. No from the road administration office
– There will be so little traffic that there will hardly be enough money to pay the people working the toll booths, said the head of the county's road administration office. I realised then that we had to make some political moves, says Haga. He also remembers that when the Atlantic Road was proposed to the county executive board, the motion carried by just one vote. This is how close the project was to not being realised. 8
Sceptical highway authorities
When the decision to build eventually was made, the Norwegian highway authorities were still very sceptical to the project, reveals John Harry Kvalshaug, who was a board member of the Atlantic Road back then. 12 hurricanes
The construction of the road was also a big challenge. The road workers experienced 12 hurricanes during the construction of the Atlantic Road before it was opened in 1989. The road was partly financed by toll money, and it was paid off in 1999, five years earlier than expected. The Atlantic Road became a huge success. Fantastisk område
The area is known for its rich bird life, and it is a paradise for divers. The entire stretch between Bud and Kristiansund is a continuous experience of coast, culture and history. The Atlantic Road is just as beautiful on a calm and sunny day as it is in stormy weather. The northern gate to the Atlantic Road is Kristiansund. To the south it is Molde, via the fishing village Bud. The Atlantic Road is just as beautiful on a calm and sunny day as it is in stormy weather. – Romsdalshorn is one of the shortest hikes. You park in Vengedal and to Litjefjell, and then climb the rest of the way. However, this is a rough hike for people who dislike hikes. I was 10 or 11 the first time I did this hike, and I find it the most demanding peak. I don't enjoy heights, they make me quite scared, so it wasn't fun the first time. It was easier the second time, but my fear of heights always returns. I find Romsdalshorn a difficult hike both mentally and physically. You must enjoy climbing and heights, and feel safe on the rope. I found it worst mentally, because I don't feel safe on the rope either. But I kept telling myself that it was safe. It was a difficult climb, but I will probably do it again. It is one of my local peaks, and I am lucky to have parents who can join me on the climbs, says Ingvill.
Store Vengetind is Romsdal's tallest mountain, but Ingvill says it is not the most demanding one. – This is also a long hike, but there isn't much climbing, so it's not a difficult hike. If I was to start the Mountain Queen/King challenge now, I would probably start with Store Vengetind.
Kvanndalstind and Juratind
– This is also an easy hike without much climbing. You can park at 704 MASL outside the café on top of Trollstigen, so you will be going approximately 1,000 metres up in height. P.S.! Ingvill had a mountain guide on her trips, and they had plenty of equipment, such as helmets, climbing harnesses and ropes.
– These are two of the longest Mountain Queen hikes, and the longest hikes I have done in Romsdalen. You probably have to estimate 11-12 hours for the hike. Juratind is also a popular peak for skiers, but you have to pay close attention to conditions as there is a danger of avalanches. 16
Kongen and Dronninga
Even though these peaks have majestic names, Ingvill believes they are easy hikes – again, compared to Romsdalshorn. – I don't think you need a rope at all for Kongen and Dronninga. I ascended these peaks on the same day when I was filmed by NRK two years ago. Both peaks are perfectly fine. There is a lot of scree on Kongen, but the paths are good and well-marked. These peaks and Store Vengetind are the peaks that require the least amount of climbing. Store Trolltind

WALK ALONG ROMSDALSEGGEN Norway's most stunning and easily available walk! The hike across the Romsdalseggen ridge is located right in the middle of Norway's most beautiful mountain world! At the top of the ridge, you have a spectacular view of the Romsdal Alps, with Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn and the Vengetind mountains as the most prominent ones. During the walk along the edge you can also see Kongen, Dronninga and Store Trolltind. You can even see the town of Molde and the Norwegian Sea. Far below you can see the river Rauma winding its way through the Romsdal valley, and glimpse the train on the Rauma line.
A historic pearl in Angvik Angvik Gamle Handelssted is located in the village Angvik by Tingvollfjorden at Nordmøre. The place has roots back to the 1500s, when Dutch ships anchored up in the bay to buy timber. Now you can experience this unique hotel that features its own museum and spa.
The bus departs from Åndalsnes Skysstasjon at 09:30 and stops in the car park in Vengedal where the hike starts. Follow the signposts for Romsdalseggen, past a cabin and up the hill along the river. Follow the path to the left, up across an obvious mountain ridge. Amazing view from the ridge. Further on, the terrain is a bit flatter, but there is a clear ridge with a breezy passage. Continue down towards the stone cabin at Nesaksla. The last part of the hike follows Romsdalstrappa, which features a 6.5-metre viewing platform that juts out into thin air.

Far below is the Innerdalen with its lakes and pale-green meadows.

Rørsethornet – Ræstadhornet (729 m.a.s) Duration: 2,5+1,5=4 hours. On the island of Otrøya, west of Molde, the mountains lie ”in the ocean” and are among the most stunning places to hike in the area. Park by RV668 in Rakvåg at the north side of the island, and follow the signposted path from there. It is steep in some places, and there is an open ridge from Rørsethornet (659 m.a.s.) over to Ræstadhornet.
Jendemsfjellet (633 m.a.s.) Duration: 1,5+1=2,5 hours. West of Molde towards Hollingsholmen on RV622. Cross the municipal border to Fræna, then turn left towards Hoem/Vågøy. THE HARDBAKKHYTTA cabin.
ALONG FJORDRUTA you can feast your eyes on the ocean, the fjords and the mountains.
FJORDRUTA starts at Kristiansund Airport.
In other words, this hiking path has its 'own' airport:
WALK FJORDRUTA
Eirik Gudmundsen, chairman of KNT (Kristiansund and Nordmøre tourist association) has been honoured with the King's Medal of Merit for his work of getting people out and about. One of his projects is the hiking adventure Fjordruta, a coastal hiking path that crosses six municipalities in Nordmøre and starts at Kristiansund Airport Kvernberget. TEXT: INGRID KVANDE
There are 13 cabin facilities along the 150 km long Fjordruta path, which means that the trip can be divided into sections depending on where you wish to start and how many days you have available. Gudmundsen recommends the entire trip, but here he highlights three particular cabins: The Imarbu cabin
The Imarbu cabin (5 MASL) in Aure municipality is the lowest situated cabin along Fjordruta, and it is one of the KNT cabins that are right by the sea. If you start Fjordruta at Kristiansund Airport, this will be the third cabin of the hike. There are 30 beds here. At Imarbu cabin there is also a boathouse, two great goat boats, fishing equipment, crab pots and crab cooking equipment in the boathouse. Everything is in place so you can enjoy an active day with the whole family, and you can get your dinner straight from the sea. The cabin is located on the path between Gullsteinvollen og Nersetra cabin, and from Imarbu there is a 5-hour hike to the Nersetra cabin. The Nersetra cabin
Nersetra (180 MASL), in Aure municipality, is the largest cabin facility along Fjordruta, and as mentioned above, it is a 5-hour walk from the Imarbu cabin. Nersetra consists of a farmhouse, stabbur (storehouse on pillars), barn, smokehouse, tool house, smithy and summer barn, and has 22
a total of 40 beds. There are some wonderful freshwater ponds near the cabin if you would like to go for a swim, and the sea is close by as well. The area is also well-suited to shorter trips towards the Ertvågøya island, for instance to Ertvågfjellet mountain (652 MASL). This cabin is the only one along Fjordruta that has a shower. The Hardbakkhytta cabin
Hardbakkhytta (789 MASL) in Surnadal muncipality is the highest situated cabin along Fjordruta. The cabin has 23 beds and lies by a small pond from which you can enjoy amazing views in every direction. From here you can see a continuous mountain ridge spanning from Trollheimen in the east to the Romsdal Alps in the west. Towards the north you can see the landscape of the northern part of Fjordruta, as well as the ocean. The fastest way to get here in the summer is along the path marked with a T; either from Myrholten in the Bøverdalen valley, or from the car park by the end of the road west of Botnavatnet lake above the village Valsøybotn. Fjordruta crosses the municipalities of Kristiansund, Tustna, Aure, Surnadal, Rindal and Halsa. These are the cabins along Fjordruta: Trollstua, Gullsteinsvollen, Imarbu, Nersetra, Rovangen, Storfiskhytta, Sollia, Storlisetra, Grytbakk-setra, Hermannhytta, Hardbakkhytta, Tverrlihytta and Jutulbu.
THE RAUMA LINE passes Stuguflotten bridge at Bjorli.
Europe's most beautiful
TRAIN JOURNEY If you take a trip on the Rauma railway line this summer, you will experience Europe's most beautiful and spectacular train journey, according to the world-renowned travel guide publishers Lonely Planet. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
– Give thanks to the engineers who built railways across Europe's most difficult terrain. Enjoy sensational views of towering peaks, jagged rock faces and mountain slopes leading up to windswept plateaus as you trace the Rauma River, Lonely Planet wrote in their article about the picturesque train journey between Dombås and Åndalsnes. 32 bridges
The area that the Rauma line covers features some of Norway's most wellknown tourist attractions such as Trollstigen, Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn and the river Rauma. Of the many waterfalls along the line, Vermafossen is the biggest. At Verma, the train enters a very special turning tunnel and crosses the famous Kylling bridge. The railway line crosses 32 bridges in total. During the summer season, photography stops are added, and the trip is guided in English, German and Norwegian. – Unique adventure
– This is a wonderful recognition of the Rauma line. It is amazing to win such acclaim from one of the world's best-known travel guide publishers, says Terje Fossum, Marketing Manager of NSB's Dovre and Rauma lines. – This fairy tale journey through Romsdal is unique – regardless of the weather. The Rauma line has become a huge tourist attraction, and is perhaps the main reason why an increasing number of cruise ship passengers
visit Åndalsnes. However, car tourists have also discovered the Rauma line and often combine it with a visit to Trollstigen, says Hilde Gråberg Bakke, Tourism Manager of Åndalsnes & Romsdal Reiselivslag. The Rauma line opened in 1924, is 114 km long, and lasts for approximately 1,5 hours. Two Norwegian top rankings
The Rauma line is ranked ahead of the Flåm line. Just below the two Norwegian top rankings we find railway lines such as the West Highland line in Scotland (known from Trainspotting and the Harry Potter films), and the Berina Express line between Switzerland and Italy. The Rauma line has previously been voted Norway's best and most beautiful train journey by NSB's passengers. Harry Potter
Harry Potter fans may not be aware of the fact that the Rauma line featured in film number six - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Record visits this summer
The Rauma line has four daily departures from Åndalsnes, of which one goes to Lillehammer. The other three turn around at Dombås. In the summer season, an additional, recently renovated train for tourists only will have two daily departures in the high season. 23

Kristiansund
IN THIS TOWN YOU CAN VISIT
FOUR SEPARATE LANDS
IN KRISTIANSUND, you can visit Innlandet, Kirkelandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet in just 20 minutes.
This town consists of four lands, has local place names like Tahiti and Marokko (Morocco), and it is the home of the world's first ever Norwegian as well as the world's most famous Norwegian. Welcome to Kristiansund. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
30
Krogvold fascinated by the town
Another famous Norwegian, the photographer Morten Krogvold, has become fascinated by Kristiansund in his long-term role as the leader of the town's much-acclaimed photography festival Nordic Light: – This environment is real, and there is a fascinating blend of old fishing nostalgia, brutal post-war architecture, and the nearness of the Atlantic Ocean, says Krogvold. He says that some of the world's most famous and fêted photographers have described Kristiansund as "magic" and "the most beautiful place on earth". The world's oldest public transportation
The heart of the charming town is Sundbåten, which is anchored in the town's history. The boat is one of the world's oldest means of public transportation that continues to be in operation. Ever since 1876 it has ferried passengers between the four 'lands'; the boroughs Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet. The entire round takes just under 20 minutes. The first and the most famous
Findings have been made in Kristiansund that indicate that the world's first Norwegian may very well have been a local. The first finding from the early Stone Age was made at Nordlandet, or Marokko, as the borough is known locally. Why it is called Marokko, no one knows. What everyone does know, is that the world's most famous Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, was born and raised in Kristiansund.. Tahiti
Guitarist and songwriter Frode Alnæs no longer lives in town, but he is still a dedicated patriot. He did a great job restoring the town's oldest cafeteria, Dødeladen, which was build in the 1700s. In connection with this, he also initiated the Tahiti Festival at Innlandet. Or at Tahiti, as Innlandet is known locally. Alnæs still spearheads the festival, which attracts a number of national and international artists each year. The opera town
T
here is much about Kristiansund that isn't normal, but that is just lovely, says music artist Øystein Dolmen, one half of the popular Norwegian duo Knutsen & Ludvigsen. And according to their absurd and immortal Kristiansunds Nasjonalsang (Kristiansund's National Anthem), you can visit Kristiansund for no reason whatsoever. An absurd universe
– You can travel to Singapore, Paris, Milan. But that's boring! Go to Kristiansund. It is a town that overwhelms you. The locals are very special, colourful and extrovert people. Kristiansund isn't normal. It is an absurd universe, but that is just lovely, Øysten Dolmen once said to the newspaper Bergens Tidende, describing the town that is known for its blandaball (fish and potato dumplings), opera and klippfisk (bacalao).
Musically speaking, Kristiansund is probably best known for being the home town of artists such as Lynni Treekrem, Frode Alnæs and Øyvind 'Elg' Elgenes, but it is also known as the opera town. The Norwegian folk opera was established in Kristiansund by Edvard Bræin as early as in 1928. The Norwegian Opera in Oslo opened 32 years later. The Bacalao Town
Kristiansund is founded on bacalao (dried, salted cod, known locally as 'klippfisk'), a tradition dating back to the 1600s. Naturally, Kristiansund the Bacalao Town has a bacalao museum, a bacalao festival, a bacalao opera (Donna Bacalao) and a bacalao guitar. The latter was specially ordered by Frode Alnæs. And virtually every restaurant in town serves bacalao. 'Ballsund'
Ballsund is another name for Kristiansund, as blandaball (dumplings made from ground fish, potato and onion) is one of the locals' favourite dishes. And you can still by genuine fish and chips from some of the town's snack bars. 31
SUNDBÅTEN is a legendary experience in the heart of town.
Oil and gas
These days, Kristiansund's industry and commerce is focused on oil and gas, big incomes and a bright future. At the documentation and experience centre Petrosenteret, children and adults can learn more about the oil industry and the 'black gold' just off the coast of Norway. Norway's best preserved
In 1940, before the oil adventure began, Kristiansund was almost destroyed when 900 houses burned down to the ground during the German air raid. The town was rebuilt in a typical but muted functionalist style. The rebuilt Kristiansund has been held up as one of the cultural environments of 20th century Norway that is most worthy of preservation. In the town's centre you will find the country's best preserved examples of post-war architecture.
Norway's most visited tourist attractions, also allows fishing from some of its bridges. Hiking
There is a great hike starting at the town's airport (!) Kvernberget. 'Fjordruta' encompasses 13 cabins, both by the shore and on top of untouched mountains. The route can easily be split up into shorter hikes. Deep sea fishing
Kristiansund also offers fishing possibilities for children and adults. A popular alternative is a 3-hour deep sea fishing trip onboard the former rescue boat MS Hagbart Waage. You will find everything you need onboard the boat, including fishing equipment, food and drink.
Norway's smallest borough
Atlanterhavsbadet
To find Norway's smallest borough, you have to cross 14 km of ocean. There you will find the amazing archipelago and fishing village Grip, surrounded by 200 islets and skerries. Grip can be reached by passengererboat. The minuscule island's last permanent resident gave up in 1974, and left the island, his rubber boots and his sou'wester behind shortly before Christmas. Here you can read more about Grip, which also was known as Norway's smallest municipality until 1964.
If you'd like to feel like a fish in the sea yourself, you should visit Atlanterhavsbadet. This pool facility was ranked among the top four in Norway in the Consumer Council's and Consumer Ombudsman's extensive quality test of Norwegian pools.
The Atlantic Road
Krifast was paid off in December, so now you can drive to the island town by the ocean for free. Kristiansund is the ideal starting point for several amazing road trips, such as crossing the ocean on the Atlantic Road or exploring Aursjøveien in the wild mountains of Sunndal. You can also cycle across the Atlantic Road. It has been named Norway's most beautiful bicycle trip by NRK and ut.no. The Atlantic Road, one of 32
The Kristiansund Card gives you free access to many of our top attractions, plus discounts on accommodation, car rental and day passes to Sundbåten. The card is available at the Tourist Information Office.

PANORAMIC VIEWS AND
CELEBRITIES
Roses, jazz, football, panoramic views and celebrities. This is what most Norwegians think of when they hear the name Molde, the town that in the late 1800s was one of Norway's most popular holiday destinations for fjord tourists as well as people of national and international renown. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG

Magne Bondevik; one of Norway's richest financiers, Kjell Inge Røkke; music artist Ane Brun; and the musician and international king of crime fiction, Jo Nesbø. His books about the policeman and anti-hero Harry Hole have been an amazing sales success and have made Nesbø the richest Norwegian cultural personality of all time. His latest book, "The Son" ("Sønnen", org. title), is also quickly becoming an international best-seller. The roses
The town of roses is a hundred-year-old name for Molde based on its many lush rose gardens. The slogan was first used during an international promotion in 1913. The English-speaking leaflet for a cruise line refers to Molde as "the city of roses". To this day, every tourist ship that calls at Molde is welcomed with a bouquet of red roses. The sculpture Rosepiken (the rose girl) can be found at the town hall square Rådhusplassen, and the roof of the town hall is covered with roses Jazz and global superstars
Despite its modest size, Molde is one of Norway's most well-known football towns, and for the past few years the local team, MFK, has been one of the very best in fa m Norway. The supporter club in the town of re a f ro roses is obviously known as Tornekrattet (the om m, a h m on rs w thorny thicket). One of the team's most enthusig ot h e r s othe , the Ylvis-br astic supporters is former prime minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. ou

The Molde International Jazz Festival is a huge event, and the festival, which started in 1961, is now the longest-running festival in Europe. It has been held in week 29 each year since its inception. The festival attracts nearly 100,000 visitors and has played host to many of the world's biggest jazz and rock artists. The sculpture Jazzgutten (the jazz boy) plays his saxophone on the town square.
222 mountain peaks
The splendid view of the islands and islets set against a panorama of mountain peaks – the Molde Panorama is still the town's biggest tourist attraction. From the view point Varden (407 MASL), you can enjoy the view of Molde, the fjord and the Molde Panorama with its 222 partially snow-clad mountain peaks. Røkke, Nesbø and Bondevik
More recently, the town with only 26,000 inhabitants has nurtured someof Norway's most famous people, including former prime minister Kjell
Harry Hestad og Harry Hole
The international crime author Jo Nesbø's career as a football player both began and ended in MFK. He started playing for the main team at only 17 years of age and was aiming for a bright future as a professional football player, but had to give it up at a young age when he tore the cruciate ligaments in both knees. One of Molde's football legends, Harry Hestad, was also one of Jo Nesbø's heroes back in the 60s and 70s. The protagonist of Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole series actually got his first name from Harry Hestad. 39
MOLDE is an intimate, cozy town with a friendly atmosphere. At the town square, among other delicacies, you can find handpicked, local strawberries.
Wealthy celebrity supporters
The former partners in finance, Kjell Inge Røkke and Bjørn Rune Gjelsten, have helped fund the football club for many years. They previously owned the British football club Wimbledon. In 1998 they financed MFK's new pride and joy, Aker Stadion, which is located on the shoreline just to the west of the town centre. The arena has often been described as Europe's most beautiful football stadium, thanks to architectural features such as the granite and glass façade. The price tag was NOK 212 million (1998). Ole Gunnar Solskjær
In 2011, Røkke and Gjelsten contributed to bringing the world's most well-known Norwegian to Molde to be the team's new coach. After 15 years in Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjær returned to Molde to manage the club that gave him his breakthrough as a football player and where he was discovered by ManU. Solskjær, who grew up in neighbouring Kristiansund, became a massive success for the club and led Molde to the club's first two champion's league wins in 2011 and 2012, and to a cup final win in 2013.. Historical Molde
Kongebjørka (the King's birch) in Fredslunden is an important historical

symbol in Molde. This is where King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav sheltered during the German air raid on the town in 1940, while being hunted by German occupation forces. The spot is still a symbol for freedom, peace and human rights Fire and bombing
Large parts of Molde burned down during the town fire in 1916, but some areas of the old Molde survived. Here you will find elements of art nouveau architecture and several original wooden houses that have since been restored. In April 1940, most of Molde was bombed by German bomber planes. These areas were rebuilt in a simple functionalist post-war style, with large town houses lining broad streets. Seilet
The western part of town is now dominated by modern architecture. Next to Aker Stadion you will see the characteristic hotel Seilet (the sail). Large parts of the 16-floor, 82-metre tall hotel, whose obvious inspiration is the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, rests on posts in the sea. Despite opposition to its construction, the hotel became a tourist attraction as soon as it was completed in October 2002. The culture centre Bjørnsonhuset is situated next door to the hotel. The are also several flower beds in the area containing more than a thousand roses.

Sveinung the sea eagle always shows up for Smøla Naturopplevelser's safaris. He was born in 1985 and is probably the world's most photographed sea eagle.

veinung lost his lady just over a year ago after a long-term relationship. He has found a new bird though, and has become a father with his new partner, says ornithologist and biologist Espen Lie Dahl, who is studying eagles for his PhD. Espen was born and raised at Smøla and for as long as he can remember, he has been fascinated by the biggest bird of prey in Northern Europe. He works as a bird researcher at the National Wind Energy Center (NVES) at Smøla. The world's densest population
By means of for instance DNA samples, Espen knows just about every single sea eagle that lives on this little island out in the ocean. Smøla has the world's densest population of sea eagles. Many of them have their own names, as Espen prefers to use names rather than numbering the DNA samples. Sveinung
– Sveinung is the one we have the best contact with. He always shows up on our safaris. He is unafraid, neither shy nor modest, and comes along like a bullet to get fish. Sometimes I have actually feared that he would fly straight into the boat. For this reason, he has probably been the cause of a mixture of fear and mirth among the safari 46
participants, laughs Espen. In addition to working on his PhD at NINA/ NTNU and researching sea eagles at Smøla, Espen also runs Smøla Naturopplevelser with his brother Audun and their friend Svein Håvard Støl. Chasing the perfect shot
– Sveinung is the one we have the best contact with. He always shows up on our safaris. He is unafraid, neither shy nor modest, and comes along like a bullet to get fish. Sometimes I have actually feared that he would fly straight into the boat. For this reason, he has probably been the cause of a mixture of fear and mirth among the safari participants, laughs Espen. In addition to working on his PhD at NINA/NTNU and researching sea eagles at Smøla, Espen also runs Smøla Naturopplevelser with his brother Audun and their friend Svein Håvard Støl. Killed by wind turbines
When it comes to Smøla's wind turbines, the powerful birds of prey have not had much luck. Several of them still fly straight into the wind turbines' rotor blades like kamikaze pilots. – 52 sea eagles have been killed by Smøla's wind turbines since 2007. We are now initiating a new project to try to prevent this, says Espen.
Unique project
The unique project is being closely followed all over the world. Birds and wind turbines is a difficult combination. – Our goal is to find a way that allows wind turbines to be located near sea eagles without presenting a danger to them, says Espen. Painting the rotor blades
One of the three rotor blades of four different wind turbines will be painted black. UV lighting and sound effects will also be tested. The project is supported by Statkraft, NVE and NINA, among others. – The greyish white rotor blades do not create a big enough contrast. The idea is that one black rotor blade will make the wind turbines easier to spot for the sea eagles. Some experiments suggest that this might work, says Roelof Frans May, a researcher at NINA. Various theories
The experts have various theories for why the sea eagles fly into the rotor blades. Sea eagles are excellent fliers with very good vision. Still, they may not be able to spot the blades moving when they are close to them. Another theory suggests that they see the blades, but exploit the lift, and are playing in the turbulence Resilient population
– The sea eagle population has not dropped since the wind turbines started up. However it has not increased as fast as it probably would have done without the wind turbines. Sea eagles nesting near the wind turbines lay fewer eggs than couples that have found new nesting areas at Smøla, says Espen Lie Dahle. Conservation
The sea eagle is the biggest bird of prey in Northern Europe, and it has been subject to conservation since 1968. Sea eagles mature between 5 and 7 years of age. They then form couples, find their own territory, and stay there for the rest of their lives..

PROFESSIONAL CYCLING TIPS Kurt Asle Arvesen (39) from Eresfjord in Nesset municipality is one of Norway's most high-profiled cyclists of all time. He became the U23 World Champion in 1997 and turned professional the next year. Today he is the Sporting Director of one of the world's top professional teams, Team Sky. Kurt Asle can look back on an eventful career with five Tour de France participations and one stage victory, and two stage victories in Giro de Italia. The 39-year-old has won Danmark Rundt twice, and has ÅLESUND eight Norwegian Championship gold medals. Here are Kurt Asle's top tips for bicycle trips on country lanes and off-road (MTB) in a district he knows like the back of his hand after numerous training days on two wheels.
MOLDE
1: The Atlantic Road
2: Trollstigen
3: Eresfjord - Eikesdal
– A unique experience on the most outlying islands. This trip can be combined with a trip around Averøya island, says Kurt Asle. The Atlantic Road was named Construction of the Century in Norway. It spans several islands and skerries by means of eight bridges. It has won a number of 'World's Best' awards – and has also won the award for Norway's Best Bicycle Trip. A national tourist road, the Atlantic Road goes from Kårvåg to Bud and is 36 km long.
– A tough and brutal trip with a spectacular ascent. At the top there is a great café and amazing view points from which you can enjoy the stunning nature and look forward to the descent, says Kurt Asle about one of Norway's biggest tourist attractions. Trollstigen is a majestic and dramatic natural experience. The road snakes up the mountain by means of 11 hair pin bends. At the top, you will be 858 metres above main sea level. The road has been a tourist magnet ever since it opened in 1936. GPS: 62°27'38.1"N 7°40'13.5"E
– A 100 km long round trip: Eidsvåg – Eresfjord – Åfarnes – ferry to Sølsnes – Ranvik - Eidsvåg. Tough ascent up Vistdalsheia. Enjoy the break on the ferry between Åfarnes and Sølsnes with some coffee and svele, says Kurt Asle about the trip around the Landfjord. A well-known round trip among active cyclists.

MORE BICYCLE TRIPS: In addition to Kurt Asle Arvesen's professional cycling tips, you can also enjoy the following trips:

6: The island Smøla is located far out to sea, in an amazing archipelago consisting of more than 6,000 islands, islets and skerries. There are both long and short trips, and all are well signposted. The island is flat and ideal for cycling; the highest point on the island is approx. 70 MASL. There is also a road that goes from islet to islet out to Veiholmen fishing village.
Smøla
7: In Nordmarka, north of Surnadal, you can enjoy a bicycle ride in an outstretched, quiet and diverse nature area. The route follows gravel roads between forests and heaths, in a terrain that is level enough to be suitable for the whole family.

BICYCLE HIRE: 4: Aursjøveien
– Long roundtrip Eidsvåg – Eikesdal – Sunndal – Eidsvåg on both gravel and tarmac surfaces. Tough ascent up Finnsetlia. There is a dark tunnel, so bring a light, says Kurt Asle about Aursjøveien. The bicycle trip from Eikesdalen up Finnsetlia to Aursjøen is a real test of strength, but a very popular trip among cyclists. The road levels out near the Aursjø Dam. Here you will find Aursjøhytta (a DNT cabin), which is staffed during the summer season. GPS: 62°39'53.9"N 8°33'05.3"E
5: Innerdalen
– Start by the shop in Ålvundeid. A nice and easy ride on tarmac and gravel to the Innerdalshytta cabin, approx. 30 km in total, is how Kurt Asle describes this trip. LURED INTO THE MOUNTAIN
BY TROLLS
The young girl Marte Olsdotter Strand from Åfarnes was lured into the mountain and imprisoned by trolls. Just over 300 years ago, she explained herself in front of eight jurors in Molde, and was believed. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
– Marte's story has been related by several sources. The eight jurors are all described as wise and intelligent men, says Kåre Magne Holsbøvåg, who has mapped all the troll legends of Nordmøre and the place names they mention.
side. Nineteen people have died in Trollveggen since it was first conquered in 1965 – ten climbers and nine base jumpers. In addition, several dramatic rescue operations have taken place on this mountainside.
Imprisoned by trolls for two years
The Trollveggen Legend
Marte was kept imprisoned by large trolls for nearly two years. Several of them had tails like foxes. While Marte was in the mountain, the troll mother gave birth to a baby the size of half-grown man. When Marte refused to marry her son, she was thrown out of the mountain in the nude.
– I have always been fascinated by the Trollveggen Legend, but it is not well-known and lacking in detail. So we decided to create a child-friendly version about the trolls, the wedding and the sunrise, says Heidi Leren, who has returned to her native Rauma, known the best municipality in the world for people who love nature. In 2013 she published the charming children's book Sagnet om Trollveggen (The legend of the Troll Wall) together with Hilde Kittang Alnes and illustrator Gunvor Rasmussen. Myra, a troll princess, is getting married to Rabben, the son of the Mountain King himself. And the wedding guests are going to build a house for the bride and groom. It takes a whole night to build just the one wall – Trollveggen – and when the wedding party ascends the wall in the early morning, the sun rises. Everyone turns to stone; a whole mountain range of trolls.
Ble trolltrodd
In May 1965, the Amtmann asked the girl and her father to come to Molde, so she could explain herself in front of eight jurors. They found that the girl was believable and in her right mind. Their conclusion was that Marte probably had been with the trolls. Trollveggen
It is a well-known fact that the dramatic peaks of the famous Trollveggen (the troll wall) are not your usual mountains. They are trolls that turned to stone – trolls who had drunk too much and partied too hard. According to the Trollveggen Legend, it all started when a huge troll wedding got out of control a long time ago. They partied so hard that they didn't notice the light of day returning. When the sun rose, the entire wedding party turned to stone. To this day, you can recognise the trolls' faces in the stone, and the peaks have names such as Brura (the bride), Brudgommen (the groom), Brurjentene (the bridesmaids), Trollspiret (the troll spire), Trollparet (the troll couple), Trollgubben (the old troll man), Trollklørne (the troll claws) and Trollryggen (the troll's back). Nineteen fatalities
Trollveggen, which is located in the heart of Romsdal, is Northern Europe's tallest vertical mountainside. The drop from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the valley is almost 1700 metres. A thousand of those form a sheer drop. At the beginning of the drop, parts of the mountain leans 50 metres out above the mountain-
Trolls are spellbinding
– Trolls are exciting and they must not be put out of sight and out of mind. We see how they spellbind children and help them get involved and interested in nature and mountains, says Heidi Leren. Nordmøre and Romsdal are full of signs of trolls. There are numerous traces of the colossal giants, who are described as dangerous, daft and huge. Trollveggen and Trollstigen, with its 11 hair pin bends that zigzag 825 MASL, are among Norway's most visited tourist attractions and also among the best-known place names containing the word troll. Tamed by trolls
– Trolls even tame youths who are used to the most bizarre computer games. They pay close attention when I tell them about the trolls' devastations and the local traces of them in Trollstigen, Trolltindene and Trollveggen. Tourists from abroad have a massive interest in trolls and a surprisingly extensive knowledge about them, says Alf Vidar Ebbestad from Romsdal Aktiv.
TROLLKIRKA in Fræna, is a series of three natural limestone-caverns. The picture shows the first cavern, where you walk for approx. 40 meters into the mountain before reaching a gorgeous underground waterfall.

MAGIC IN TROLLHEIMEN: Renndølssetra in Innerdalen valley is one of several active mountain dairy farms in the Sunndal mountains.
Fear and panic
Trolls are deeply embedded in Nordic poetry and fairy tale traditions, and have roots in Norse mythology. In times immemorial, they have spread fear and panic wherever they go. Back in the old days, it was forbidden to have any kind of contact with such frightful beings: Law against trolls
– The oldest Norwegian Christian laws from the 11th and 12th century contain an unambiguous prohibition against "contacting and seeking knowledge from trolls". Norway's first national law, which dates back to 1276, considered contacting trolls to be such a serious violation of the law that it carried the maximum sentence, explains historian and troll expert Rune Blix Hagen at the University of Tromsø. Troll Hunter
These days, the government doesn't want people to know that there actually are trolls in Norway. At least this is the premise for the Norwegian mockumentary Troll Hunter, which was released in 2010. It became a hugely popular export. At one point, the film was the highest grossing DVD in the UK. – One of the former troll hunters in Romsdal seems to have been none other than Saint Olaf. Stories reveal how badly the trolls bothered him when he was travelling through Romsdal. He appears to have taken the god Thor's place as the biggest troll killer ever, some time between year 1000 and year 1200, writes Kåre Magne Holsbøvåg in his book about goblins and trolls in place names, entitled "Tuss og troll i stadnamn". Trollheimen – perfect for trolls
History reveals that trolls live in untouched nature, in mountain caves, forests and oceans. So Nordmøre and especially Romsdal are perfect locations for trolls to settle. One such place is the great hiking area of Trollheimen, located on the border between Møre og Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag. Trollheimen means “home
56
of the trolls”, and according to legend the mountains in this area were originally trolls that turned to stone as the sun rose. The enormous mountains in Trollheimen indicate that the trolls living here might have been the colossal Jotuns. Some of the mountains in Trollheimen are named after trolls, such as Trollhetta and Trolla, the highest peak in Trollheimen (1850 meters). Blåhø (1671 meters above sea level) is the highest peak in the central part of Trollheimen, and holds a special secret. In the glacier, just below the peak, two caverns sometimes open – Speilsalen (Hall of Mirrors) and Blåsalen (The Blue Hall). In 1999 a group of troll-hunters investigated the rumour that trolls still inhabit these caves, safely protected from the sun. The troll-hunters found no conclusive evidence. Over 200 troll places
Many place names, mountains and natural phenomena have been named after these supernatural native Norwegian beings. In Nordmøre and Romsdal there are well over 200 names for places, mountains and areas that begin with Troll, and there are also a number of variations of words for trolls, such as jutul. – Some of the place names are related to legends, others probably arose because the people who frequented the areas found them unpleasant and scary; places with strange, inexplicable noises in terrains that were well-suited to trolls. Many of these names were probably coined in the Middle Ages, explains Kåre Magne Holsbøvåg, whose book was published by Romsdal Sogelag in 2006. The Troll Church
Many of these place names can be found in several places in the area, such as the troll church. One of these is the troll church Trollkirka in the municipality of Fræna, which consists of three limestone caves with subterranean streams and waterfalls, 500 metres above sea level. In the same area we find Trolltindane (the troll peaks), Trolldalen (troll valley) and Trollvatna (the troll lakes). In one of the lakes there is a troll dragon which was last seen in the late 1800s "by an old shoemaker, Mats from Varholen, and an old man from Nordmøre who was with him". The story also reveals that the lake contains a two-headed troll fish.
The spellbinding Trollstigen The budget burst just like a troll, but the new and improved Trollstigen spellbinds people far beyond Norway's borders. The modernised version has won several awards for being one of the finest tourist facilities in Europe. The tourist building at the very top of the spectacular Trollstigen has for instance won the European Concrete Award 2014 in the 'building' class. The already prize-winning structure on the national tourist road, which goes from Geiranger to Trollstigen, beat eighteen other European buildings that were also nominated for the award. Just under NOK 200 million was spent on making one of the most dramatic and best-visited tourist attractions in the country even more beautiful. The budget was NOK 55 million. Adrenalin sport
As early as in 1916, the Norwegian parliament approved the building of a road across the Stigfjell mountain, even though many people considered this sheer madness. The construction of the mountain pass started in 1928 and was something akin
to an adrenalin sport in a very steep area prone to rockfalls. On the 31st of July 1936, King Haakon opened the new road across Stigfjell. The road was named Trollstigen. In order to boost the tourist industry, dramatic mountains in the surrounding area were given names such as Trollveggen (the troll wall), Bispen (the bishop), Kongen (the king) and Dronningen (the queen). Nerve-wracking view
The largest viewing platform is both spectacular and dramatic. It hangs over a cliff with a sheer drop of over 200 metres. At the very edge there is an airy corner with a glass fence for those with nerves of steel. However, the view across Trollstigen, which zigzags up the precipitous mountain side, is stupendous. For those of a more caution persuasion, there are alternative viewing points along the platform.

3: Four fantastic fishing villages
The stave churches are considered to be some of the most important examples of European wooden architecture from the Middle Ages. In Nordmøre and Romsdal, there are three stave churches: Rødven in Rauma (1A), Kvernes at Averøy (1B) and Grip (1C) Even though the oldest part of Rødven stave church dates back to the 1100s, it is one of the youngest stave churches in Norway. There are also stone churches in the county, and Edøy church at Smøla, which was built in 1190, was listed in 2002. The open-air play Gurispelet is performed here every summer, and is an experience that comes highly recommended.
When I guide tourists across the Atlantic Road, I tell them about the fish that used to be dried on the hills we pass on the way. The production of clipfish, or bacalao, became very popular in the 1700s. Many of the visitors to this region have eaten a lot of bacalao, and they find it fascinating and interesting to see where the fish was caught and dried. After a trip like that, nothing could be more natural than ending the day with a meal of bacalao.
The once vital and important fishing villages Bjørnsund (3A), Bud (3B), Grip (3C) and Veidholmen (3D) have now become idyllic vacation spots full of history and coast culture. Bjørnsund was depopulated in 1971, but around year 1900 there were between five and six hundred people living there. Bud was the biggest centre of commerce between Bergen and Trondheim in the 1500s and 1600s. Grip was a separate municipality until 1964. The tiny island outside Kristiansund can boast of both a stave church and the country's tallest lighthouse. The charming and idyllic Veidholmen at Smøla is the biggest fishing village south of Lofoten!

The mountain dairy farms in Sunndal do a sterling job of keeping the old farming traditions alive. Gammelsetra (4A) is located 1.5 hour's hike into the Grøvudalen valley. Visitors can learn how cheese is made. If you would like to try you can take a course. Renndølsetra (4B), is located in Innerdalen valley, has 25 beds and has been a favoured destination among mountain hikers ever since 1950. Dairy farming began here in 1740, and the farm still produces sour cream and butter, which you can sample along with homemade waffles. Torbuvollen (4C) in the Torbudalen valley can be reached by car, and produces sour cream, butter, white cheese and traditional Norwegian brown cheese.
From mountain goats we return to more maritime subjects – specifically to goat boats, to which a knowledge centre and museum with a large exhibition has been dedicated at Enge in Valsøyfjord. A goat boat is a type of boat that is characteristic for Nordmøre, and which is said to climb the waves like a goat – hence the name. The boats have varying sizes. The smaller ones have two sets of oars, whereas the large bridal boats, which are almost 14 metres long, have seven or eight sets of oars.
Oddvar Brå is known all over the world for breaking his ski pole, but it is also a well-known fact that he used Landsem skis from Rindal. This municipality in Nordmøre once had four ski factories: Rindal Skifabrikk, Trollheimen Skifabrikk, Trollski and Landsem Skifabrikk. Where better to place a ski museum? The museum is a part of Rindal Village Museum and opened in June 2014. Here you can learn everything there is to know about ski production and ski waxes, and see famous skis that brought fame and gold medals to the athletes that used them.

Extreme skier from Supervention:
– MØRE AND ROMSDAL THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD
68
He has travelled the world as a professional extreme skier. Asbjørn Eggebø Næss is certain: Møre og Romsdal is the world´s best area for summit hikes and extreme skiing TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
A
long with Terje Håkonsen and Aksel Lund Svindal the 34-year-old skiing artist is one of the stars in the extreme skiing and skateboarding film Supervention.Deemed by many as the world’s best skiing film. World class
“I’ve travelled the world and seen the most spectacular places. But here, everything is close by. Møre og Romsdal is world class for summit-based extreme skiing,” says Asbjørn Eggbø Næss. With a cohabitant from Nordmøre and Asbjørns facination for Møre og Romsdal, the choice was simple when the pair and their 2-year old daugher decided to move from Oslo. Nelly Torvik, Asbjørn and little Jenny now live at Hjelset near Molde. With Helset as a base, he travels the world as one of the best extreme skiers and a product developer for Haglöfs winter sports clothing. An ocean of opportunities
“It’s fantastic that the county I live in has an ocean of opportunities. There are so many summits with unique combinations of mountains and fjords. You see the fjords or the sea while skiing. For me it is just raw – a paradise for what I do. I can walk out of my house on to a summit trip,” says an enthusiastic Asbjørn Eggebø Næss who was born in Bergen. The ski county
SHORT WAY TO SUMMITS: Asbjørn Eggebø Næss travelled the world as a professional extreme skier before he decided to settle in Møre og Romsdal.
Sunnmøre and Hjørundfjorden are among the places included in the ski film Supervention. With Storfjorden and the fjord at the bottom of the moutains, the skiing facility at Stranda is a site for the film and advertising industry. Asbjørn thinks that Møre og Romsdal deserves greater attention as a winter destination. “I’m not as concerned about county borders or bureaucracy. For me, the county offers short travel distance, variation and great outdoor life ranging from the extreme to the usual for most people. Living in Oslo I was dependent on flying a lot. Now that need is reduced. I don’t need to carry coal to Newcastle,” says one of the world’s best extreme skiers. 69
MAGNIFICENT VIEW: Brustind is one of many summits in Romsdal and at Nordmøre Nordmøre.
Supervention
Supervention is a documentary of the entire spectrum of modern skiing and snowboarding, wanderlust, extreme outdoor activities, fascinating tales from the practitioners themselves, fantastic images and adventure from Alaska, Canada and Norway. In Alaska, filming took place in areas where no people had ever been were filmed. Asbjørn skis in scenes from Alaska and Sogndalsfjellene, with celebrities such as Aksel Lund Svindal and Terje Håkonsen. More international stars within skiing and snowbording are included in the film. “The film was a proud endeavour for me, together with good friends. I hope and believe that it will inspire skiers, and perhaps others,” says Næss. As a child he skied from morning to night during the winter season – something he continues to do so now at the age of 34..

COLOURFUL LIGHTHOUSES AND FISHING VILLAGES
72
The Møre coast boasts several picturesque lighthouses, fishing villages and traditional coastal culture. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG
The Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell fell so completely in love with Ona island that he bought a summerhouse on the island. The Norwegian advertising guru Ingebrigt Steen Jensen turned Ona Lighthouse into a symbol of dreams and visions in his book Ona Fyr. Along the Møre coast, there are several lighthouses and fishing villages with an almost magnetic power of attraction. Ona
Ona, the island and lighthouse way out at sea, is Norway's southernmost thriving fishing village with 34 permanent residents. The tiny island society in Sandøy municipality is comprised of the islands Ona and Husøya. Ona has its own shop, a small café, two ceramic workshops and good accommodation for visitors. Bud
Bud is another fishing village on the Romsdal coast. This village in Fræna municipality has approx. 1,000 inhabitants, and the feared and fascinating ocean stretch Hustadvika as its closest neighbour. Bud is a paradise for those who love nature and fishing. It is a child-friendly village with several apartments and boathouses for rent. Kvitholmen

ONA is Norway's southernmost thriving fishing village.
73
THE TINY idyllic island Grip is home to Norway's tallest lighthouse, one of the country's smallest stave churches, and perhaps the world's smallest fire engine.
Grip
The minuscule island Grip was Norway's smallest municipality up until 1964 and is located 14 km out to sea, surrounded by 200 islets and skerries, 40 minutes from Kristiansund by boat. The island's last permanent resident gave up in 1974, and left the island, his rubber boots and his sou'wester behind shortly before Christmas. With its 47 metres, Grip Lighthouse on the Bratthårskollen skerry is Norway's tallest lighthouse. Between the end of May and the 3rd of July, there are daily departures to Grip. Haugjegla Lighthouse
If you enjoy heights, you can spend the night 28 metres above the sea in the majestic Hauggjegla Lighthouse at Smøla. The lighthouse is a fully furnished home comprising seven floors, with 12 beds, a fully equipped kitchen, shower and WC. Hauggjegla can offer a unique natural experience regardless of the weather. Veiholmen
Smøla municipality at Nordmøre concists of one large island and no less than 5,000 smaller islands, islets and skerries. One of the larger populated areas on the island is the charming Veiholmen, which is Norway's largest fishing village south of Lofoten. You 74
do not get closer to the forces of nature on a bad weather day than this. Bjørnsund
A fishing village well worth visiting is the depopulated and idyllic Bjørnsund, where passenger boat captain Størk Huse grew up. – A great place that oozes of coastal culture and where the houses now are used as holiday and summer houses, says Størk. The fishing village consists of three islands and is located just west of Bud at the very tip of the Romsdal peninsula. Around the year 1900, there were between five and six thousand people living in the fishing village, which was depopulated around 1970. Flatflesa Lighthouse
– A more extreme experience can be had by living at Flatflesa Lighthouse and spending the night there. The lighthouse is located between Gossa island in Aukra municipality and Ona, and has only ever been inhabited by the lighthouse keepers and their families, says Huse. The lighthouse keeper's home has now been restored and is often used by smaller groups as accommodation during exciting adventures on a desolate, electricity-free island. However, there is a power aggregate at the lighthouse, which the guests are free to use.

– YOU WILL NOT FIND as many possibilities for varied fishing anywhere outside Nordmøre and Romsdal.

The enthusiast's
FOUR FAVOURITES – I have to admit that fly-fishing for salmon is my greatest passion! Enthusiast Trond Jansen, marketing manager at Classic Norway AS, loves to fish salmon, using his self-produced and self-designed flies, and remembers fishing experiences far better than birthdays and other anniversaries. The river Rauma is a favourite, one of the most beautiful rivers in the world according to him, and an experience regardless of whether or not you have a fishing rod in hand. He holds the fishing techniques and methods of old in high acclaim. – Record? I have caught some beautiful salmons during my life as an angler, and my record using a fly is 14 kilos. However, regardless of size, the experience holds the same magic every time. I never tire of it, fishing in rivers, while mountain hiking, in the fjords – be it from land or boat – or deep-sea fishing; it is a kind of madness! Occasionally I get a good catch, so naturally, I eat quite a lot of fish; and I prepare everything that goes with it from scratch. It is also nice to surprise friends and family with the delicacies of the sea. He owns his own boat, and has a particular fondness for trolling; a deep-sea method employing heavy sinkers and wobblers. This combination provides a good catch, quite often of big fish. Jansen recommends that, on a general basis, everyone who desires to go fishing first get in touch with the locals for tips and advice, and never to forget the importance of safety first. That goes for all types of fishing! Here are four of his favourites: Deep-sea fishing
This is becoming more and more popular. Get in touch with professionals. 76
Alternatively, charter a boat of the right size, and if possible equipped with a sonar. Many camping-sites have boats-for-hire. Smøla, Finnøya, Hustadvika and Håholmen is an Eldorado for deep-sea fishing, where you can go out on larger fishing boats. The entire coastline in this area is excellent for deep-sea fishing, with great fishing spots outside Averøy and Kristiansund. Feel free to ask at the tourist offices for advice. Fjord-fishing The conditions for fishing is truly unique in our region, with countless great fishing spots and the possibility of catching big fish quite close to the shore. Many fish from boats, but also from the rocky shores and islets. At Atlanterhavsveien, per example, you can also fish from the bridges and many outcrops surrounding them. Averøy also presents good opportunities. More and more people have had their eyes opened to fishing for sea trout from land, using either a light spinning lure or flies. This type of fishing is traditionally best during the period starting after Easter and ending in June. Mountain-fishing
There are many opportunities, and most mountain lakes are rich on fish, even though the size can vary somewhat. The potential for a catch is large and underestimated. The areas around Sandgrovbotn and Mardøla are worth mentioning. There is also a host of good mountain lakes in Nordmøre, Trollheimen and Sunndal. A lot of these are often easily accessible and well suited for daytrips. Possibilities for fresh-water fishing on Smøla. River-fishing
The river Rauma is a favourite for many, and it is open for fishing salmon this year. However, law protects the sea trout here. The river is an experience, surrounded by intoxicating mountains. Other great fishing rivers are Eira, Driva and Surna, and with the right flow you can catch salmon and sea trout in many of the smaller rivers found throughout Romsdal and Nordmøre.
– PARTAKE in an organized deep-sea fishing trip with local guides to increase the odds of catching the biggest cod!
This is where you can try
YOUR LUCK AT FISHING It is simple to try your luck at fishing in Nordmøre and Romsdal. Fish from the rocky shores, riverbanks and mountain lakes, or from facilitated fishing spots and bridges. In addition, time permitting, you can charter a boat, or partake in organized deep-sea fishing adventures. Smøla
Smøla is the mecca of deep-sea fishing in Fjord Norway, surrounded by close to 6000 islands, islets and reefs, and positioned at the very edge of the open ocean. Fishing enthusiasts from all over Europe seek out the island, which features rich and varied fishing opportunities in both deepsea fishing and freshwater fishing. More often than not, the accommodations cater to fishing enthusiasts, with especially suitable boats, safety equipment, gutting stations, cooling facilities and skilled guides. Averøy
Averøy is located just 5 minutes by car outside of Kristiansund, and offers both deep-sea fishing and fjord fishing. The island has a host of specialized accommodation operators well suited for fishing enthusiasts, and every year sees visits from anglers coming from all parts of Europe. Home to long standing traditions within fishing, the island has many opportunities for activities also after the fishing trip, with Kristiansund only minutes away. The Atlantic Road-Bud
Along the Atlantic road you’ll find plenty of fishing opportunities. Among other things, there is a separate footbridge for fishers! From the island Strømsholmen, located by Vevang, there are daily fishing trips, suitable for those passing through but wishing to spice up their visit to the atlantic road with a fishing experience. We can also
FOOTBRIDGE for fishers at the Atlantic Road.
recommend the fishing village of Bud, with its rich fishing history, harbour, and idyllic accommodations for eating and/or staying the night. Romsdalsfjorden
The mountains are a mighty backdrop for the fjords, all teeming with fish, where they stretch from the open ocean and into Romsdalen. Here you will find both open and more sheltered waters, and many well-suited accommodations that can give fishing enthusiasts a great experience, often combined with other activities and outdoor adventures. Midsund, located at the outmost point of Romsdalsfjorden, is a fishing Eldorado in itself. Nordmørsfjordene
Inward toward the mountainous area of Trollheimen you will find Stangvikfjorden, Todalsfjorden and Ålvundfjorden. The fishing is good, in scenic surroundings. Our tip is that you combine salt-water fishing with fishing in rivers rich in salmon and trout. If you wish to stretch your legs there is also easily accessible mountain lakes rich on trout or char scattered throughout Trollheimen. Fishing licences are easily accessible. Have a nice trip, and catch a big one! 77

THE ISLAND PARADISE of the
ROMSDAL COAST Aukra – Midsund – Sandøy Go treasure hunting! Flat landscape and short distances make this island paradise a perfect place for the whole family to enjoy a fantastic treasure hunt for experiences and activities. Well signposted walking trails makes the nature easily accessible. With bicycle, car or boat touring this island paradise, the conditions are well suited for treasure hunting both on land and at sea, perhaps even under water. Among more than 800 islands, islets and skerries in Sandøy, 6 of which are populated, you will find the well-known fishing village of Ona and Ona Fyr. Midsund is a fishing paradise where you can catch everything the ocean has to offer. Sea angling, fjord angling and fishing from ashore. Everything is well organized for you to get the most out of your angling holiday. You can also go on a hike up to Rørsethornet, the so-called “Besseggen” of Midsund. Aukra is the landing site for gas from the Ormen Lange field. Visit Løvikremma Coastal Farm or make a trip to Rossøyvågen and Rindarøy, facing the open sea and filled with the atmosphere of a rich coastal culture.
