2009.01.02 Slovak Chapels and Churches Euro Definitive Series
On 2. 1. 2009, the Slovak Post issued the basic euro postal stamps. Eight definitive postal stamps reflected the value structure of the eight euro coins, and four commemorative postal stamps had nominal values according to the most frequently used stamps pursuant to the currently valid tariff book. These postal stamps are part of the new issue line "Slovak Cultural Heritage - Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque Sights" The first euro postal stamps were designed by Peter Bilak of the Netherlands, an artist with Slovak origins, along with Peter Augustovic, a notable Slovak graphic artist. The main idea of the new euro stamp issue is to present the Slovak cultural heritage dating to the emergence of Christian culture in Slovakia, as Christianity was a factor uniting all of Europe. This issue line presents some lesser known but historically valuable cultural sights scattered across Slovakia, dating from the 9th to 13th centuries. Some of Slovakia's most significant stamp designers, including the seven graphic artists P. Augustovic, I. Benca, R. Brun, A. Feke, K. Felix, D. Kallay and P. Uchnar and the four engravers R. Ciganik, A. Feke, M. Cinovsky and F. Horniak, participated in designing these stamps. The consistent team of artists was coordinated by P. Augustovic. The Slovak Post requested that different colours be used for the stamps, so like banknotes the stamps could be quickly and easily discerned from each other. Common features of this set of definitive stamps include identical background shading, uniform layout format and the use of the Fedra font designed by Peter Bilak. A unifying feature throughout the history of many series of Slovak stamps has always been sacral architecture. The stamps portray not only views of churches but also architectural details typical of Romanesque art, since in the past architecture was also a medium for other types of artistic expression. As recommended by our consultant Bibiana Pomfyova, PhD of the Institute of Art History of the Slovak Academy of Science, the stamps feature the most interesting of interior decorations, from column and portal capitals to wall paintings. One of the requirements of the Slovak Post was that the sights featured in the stamps represent all of Slovakia, reflecting the country's current geopolitical division into eight Higher Regional Units. This series of definitive postal stamps are printed using rotary recess printing combined with gravure.
