In March, Finland issues stamps on climate change, Easter dishes, roses and greetings 23.02.2009
Some 40 countries will issue stamps on climate change this year. The common theme is Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers. The polar regions play an important role in the global climate system: changes there are reflected around the world and it is precisely where global warming is currently at its fastest and greatest extent. The international stamp collaboration is being led by Itella, the postal operator in Finland. The Finnish joint issue on climate change is a two-stamp miniature sheet entitled Melting Glaciers. The sheet depicts a Polar sea in which pieces of melting ice shelf are floating. In the middle of each stamp on the sheet is a snowflake symbol, the campaign insignia used by all the issuing countries. The miniature sheet will be issued on 18 March. On the same date as the miniature sheet campaigning against climate change there will also be issues of stamps on Easter dishes, rose blossoms and greetings. All the new stamps are 1st class non-value indicator stamps.
Melting Glaciers miniature sheet part of Itella’s initiative for an international stamp partnership The stamps on the Melting Glaciers miniature sheet are round: one forms part of the background picture’s sky and the other is part of the sea. Between the stamps, in the middle of the miniature sheet, there is a graphical representation of the globe, with the polar regions marked out by the stamps’ perforations. The edges of the sheet depict representations of rising temperatures and sea levels. The miniature sheet was designed by Saku Heinänen. He also designed the snowflake symbol. A considerable international stamp partnership got under way when Finland and Chile decided to use stamps to focus attention on global warming. Postal operators in other countries were also asked if they were interested, as a result of which the campaign was joined by many Nordic postal operators, a number of their other European counterparts and the postal operators in Australia, Canada, Brazil, South Africa and India. An extension to the issue is hoped for. The Philatelic Centre’s Director Markku Penttinen has led the joint issue campaign so far. He has been given valuable support and assistance by the Chilean ambassador to Finland Carlos Parra. Now The Philatelic Centre has offered and transferred the leadership to the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which has agreed to attend to coordinating the next issue.
