Every season the collection is inspired by stories, culture, climate, people, and local textiles from travels to a different point on the map. For Fall, the road to Roark’s heart passes through Scotland. It wasn’t the famed rock formations of Skye, glorious North Sea reefs or slopes of Glencoe that moved our wayward souls. Nor did the history, color, ale and music sway our compass. It was the Highland Whiskey Trail that summoned us as the artery to each of Scotland’s precious organs.

INSPIRED BY THE FLORALS OF THE

“Pictish Warrior”

BY BEAU FLEMISTER

Roark has always been fascinated by those that reside in that ethereal netherworld that lies somewhere between fact and fiction. The warrior clan of peoples known as the Picts that

a say when it was written. In fact, it was the Romans that first wrote of them — and even named them — calling these Briton tribesmen “Picts,” a pejorative term from Latin meaning the “painted ones.” The Picts, often referred to by the Romans as war hungry, savage barbarians, used intricate body art, often tinting their bodies

Whether exaggerated, embellished or true-to-form, this mysterious and, evidenced by their remaining art, incredibly creative wilder-people struck a chord with us in Scotland. Thusly, in Jamie Thomas’ capsule, we brought their art back to life in our “Pictish” boardshorts, hats and wovens. Long live the Picts…

with a blue stain in battle, a practice that pretty much scared the living shit out of invading Romans.

THE “NORDSMAN” FLANNEL AN EVOLUTION IN WOOL

The Nordsman Flannel has traveled with Roark since its genesis. From that early foray into the wilds of Iceland, to Roark’s most recent journey to Scotland, the Nordsman plays the same cherished role flannels have for over a hundred years. Warm, comfortable, durable, and now updated with an even softer wool blend, this is the one piece that never gets left behind.

ROARK REVIVALISTS - ISLE OF SYKE

By hook or by crook, bagpipes led us through the highlands on trail North through the oldest operating distilleries in the country. Serendipitously we chased the fairies of Skye on motor bikes, while the jugs and cracks on the seawalls of Elgol provided the perfect escape route. As with any foul weathered trip, Roark was tempted into the cold as Scottish slabs tested our resolve to navigate an everopinionated Sea. Every great climate spawns ingenuity. Our product was designed with the Scottish climate and adventure-travel with a mindfulness to purpose. We were inspired by the waxed cottons of Dundee as well as the floral markings of a medieval warring tribe

“The weather is so unpredictable that it becomes predictable. We’re always cold. The bottles of whisky we’ve collected from distillery tours are sampled at breakfast, lunch, before and after dinner. The local people around town recognize us. We are part of their routine as they are a part of ours.” – JEFF JOHNSON

The best things in life are simple. Halley Stevensons is proof. The Dundee, Scotland-based company has the best damn waxed cotton fabric brand on the planet since 1864, and the technology has barely changed. Waxed cotton was developed by herring fishermen in the 15th century. The North Sea can be a violent place to work, and sailors soon learned that fish oil and grease waterproofed the sails. It didn’t take long before those sails became capes, and capes became slickers. Whether navigating soggy Scottish roads or rich Nova Scotian fishing grounds, waxed canvas continues to be the stylish rover’s waterproofing of choice. Before a certain manufacturer of triple-ply nylon began its stranglehold on the world of waterproof fabrics, Halley Stevensons was the premium standard. Many would argue they still are. Roark knows the value of a simple garment that endures the rigors of the road, and when our Scottish roadtrip took us through Dundee, we recognized the wild potential of partnering with our Scottish brethren. The co-branded Scotchman Jacket is the result; simple, crafted, timeless beauty.

ARTIST CAPSULE

Peace & Shakas Limited edition capsule with Kevin Butler, creator of Rad Cars with Rad Surfboards. By Ryan Hitzel

To say Kevin is well-versed in all things Roark is an understatement. He penned the first 2 Roark Novellas entitled “Two if by Sea” and “Olas Ahora, Trabajo Mas Tarde” chronicling Roark’s whimsically dark adventures. Kevin’s words and art are infectious – both playful and ridiculous, rooted in authenticity and satire. He’s been a friend and contributor to the brand since day one. Kevin’s series “Rad Cars with Rad Surfboards” has been brought to life as doodles and massive installations in galleries. Sometimes comical and other times stylish beyond belief, the images portray the nuanced personalities of surfers – reinforcing the motion that your car is a reflection of your quiver (or at least it should be). In 2018 Kevin did a mural at Roark’s first flagship store in Berkeley, CA. This time he doodled a series of intermingled arms and hands holding travel artifacts, road signs and shakas. It’s a meandering route through the psyche of a traveler that feels like a never-ending adventure. Everyone dug it so much that we built a capsule collection with the original mural art. The vibes are positive and we’re honored to launch this collaboration with Kevin come this Fall.

Distillery Advice Check out Strathisla distillery. It’s actually the oldest continuously operating distillery in Scotland (since 1786). And friggin

gorgeous. Kinda feels like you’re stepping back in time to an old school Highlands distillery, hidden in the glens. Strathisla makes a bunch of the blends for Chivas Regal, by the way. Not totally sure what people mean by “peats?” Not to worry. Basically, Scotch single malt whisky is classified into two main flavours: peated (smoky) or unpeated (non-smoky). The smoky aroma in whisky comes from the method of drying the malt, often dried over a peat fire (peat is a type of soil made of partially decayed vegetable matter and found in wet, boggy areas known as ‘peatlands’ or ‘mires’). Dried peat has been used as fuel and a heat source instead of wood for centuries in Scotland.

between distilleries. First called uisge beatha, or, “water of life,” back in the late-1400’s, whether legally (or illegally due to royal taxation back in the day), whisky’s been warming bodies and souls ever since. One such very earthy way to experience a selection of Scotland’s best whiskies is walking (yes, actually walking) Speyside’s legendary Whisky Trail (yes, an actual trail), which connects a few epic distilleries. While you could actually spend days walking “The Trail,” in Speyside, you could hit a few distilleries in one day if you’re keen…or still able to walk straight. Speyside, by the way, gets its name from the River Spey, which cuts through the region and provides fresh water to a bunch of the distilleries. Known for its light, grassy, non-peated whiskies, Speyside actually boasts more than half the whisky distilleries in Scotland including the two best-selling single malts in the world — Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. The Whisky Trail can take you to eight distilleries and even show you the rustic art of cooperage (barrel making) along the way.

The “Sea Cliffs of Elgol” BY DREW SMITH

By the time we arrived to the Skye Basecamp we were soaked to the bone. The old house that had been converted into a hostel sits on the Broadford Bay on the Isle of Skye, just off the western coast of Scotland. While the rain poured down outside, we relished in the cozy warmth of the old building. I had been grinding my teeth for a week now wanting to climb. We had already been shut down once by rain and wet rock, and our days were running out. The weather forecast wasn’t looking good and I was pretty sure I would go this trip without tying into a rope. I asked the staff at the Basecamp if they had any beta on climbing in the area and they told me I’d have to talk with Mike—the owner of the hostel and owner of the local guiding company. He was an older Brit who had been climbing in the area for decades and had written the guidebook to the area. Mike enthusiastically jabbered in his thick British accent and told me we’d for sure find dry rock. He motioned wildly, talking of big holds and steep overhanging rock over the ocean. Glancing out the window, I really didn’t believe him, it sounded to good too be true.

Drew embracing the big holds and steep overhanging rock Scotland has to offer.

The next day I’m climbing up the unfamiliar stone with nervous hesitation. The rock is damp from the ocean, and all the holds feel like they’re going to break. High above my last piece of protection, I can’t ignore the cold, howling wind and the crashing waves below me. I look down and Mike is belaying me while hand-rolling a cig. He looks up with his big smile and shouts, “Nice one, mate!” A few climbs later, I’m getting in my groove and feeling more comfortable on the rock. After what feels like weeks of rain, the sun comes out and I feel a big shit eating grin stretch across my face. This is what I came for.

The climbing is hard and a bit sketchy, but the scenery is otherworldly. R I D E T H E S K Y E S N A P B A C K H AT M U LT I $ 3 4 DI ABLO FL ANNEL ARMY $85 L AY O V E R PA N T B L A C K $ 7 2

Denim is the most reliable article of clothing in your pack. Beat it up, stain it and wear it every day for two months - it only gets better over time. But as travelers ourselves, we felt that better wasn’t good enough. So we’ve built upon Roark’s denim foundation with the addition of Sorbtek to manage perspiration with moisture-wicking fibers and the expanded use of T400 Tough Max denim in the weft for increased durability. In effort to offset the manufacturing process, we integrated performance Repreve fibers that are made from recycled plastic bottles. Roark’s aim is for denim to be simple, functional, and durable for the road, give it some run.
