Ecoslay Partners with Chattahoochee Hills Charter School to Cultivate Future Entrepreneurs and Grow Local Ingredients

EIN Presswire

Ecoslay, a trailblazer in natural hair care products, proudly announces an exciting partnership with Chattahoochee Hills Charter School (CHCS) to cultivate the next generation of entrepreneurs and eco-conscious leaders. This innovative collaboration will empower students to gain hands-on experience in agriculture, manufacturing, packaging, and business operations while growing natural ingredients for Ecoslay's product line.

Through this initiative, CHCS students will grow ingredients used in Ecoslay's products—starting from seedlings and nurturing them to maturity. The partnership will provide real-world learning experiences that connect students to the entire lifecycle of a product, from the soil to the shelves. By merging agricultural science with business fundamentals, the program seeks to instill valuable skills and inspire innovation among the students.

"We are thrilled to join forces with Chattahoochee Hills Charter School to foster sustainability and entrepreneurship," said Adria Marshall, Founder and CEO of Ecoslay. "This partnership is not just about growing ingredients; it's about growing young minds. Together, we're equipping students with tools they can use to impact their communities and the world positively."

The collaboration also underscores a commitment to sustainability and local community investment. By growing ingredients locally, the partnership reduces Ecoslay's

carbon footprint while fostering an appreciation for environmental stewardship among students.

Chattahoochee Hills Charter School has educated youth in the South Fulton community since 2014. "With a greenhouse and farmland for harvesting, CHCS is excited to partner with Ecoslay through their Farm-to-Pouch initiative. It is exciting to envision that plants grown right here in Chatt Hills will be in hair products in homes nationwide" said Patrick Muhammad, Principal, CHCS.

This partnership reflects a shared vision of building a sustainable, community-driven future while investing in the next generation of changemakers. Ecoslay and CHCS invite the community to celebrate this initiative and support its growth in the future.

PL Organics and Preserve Life Wellness

In December I took the Ambassador Tour of the Preserve Life Wellness retreat which is under construction in Douglas County. This tour was expanded to include a tour of the PL Organics and Preserve Life Wellness property. They’re investment is huge. I learned that the building under construction, parallel to the greenhouse on the other side of the entrance, will also be open to the public, and will have a commercial and educational component. They’re also working on the koi dome. A lodge is under construction as well, but wasn’t far enough along to photograph.

PL Only Organics is a local organic produce provider based in Douglasville, Georgia. They offer a wide selection of organic vegetables and fruits, focusing on sustainable and regenerative farming practices. Here are some key aspects of PL Only Organics:

• Organic Deep Water Culture: This method involves growing plants in nutrient-rich water without soil, promoting rapid and healthy growth.

• Regenerative Farming: They use techniques that revive soil and ecosystems, contributing to a healthier planet.

• Sustainable Practices: Their farming methods aim to protect the environment, ensuring minimal waste and conservation of resources.

• 24/7 Monitoring: Continuous monitoring ensures optimal growth conditions for their crops.

• Zero Water Discharge: They use a closed-loop system to conserve water and prevent waste.

PL Only Organics is committed to providing fresh, locally sourced produce that is free from synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

The Bridge Group Receives Honor

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, The Bridge ~ "Let's Talk," an intercultural community discussion group about race relations, started almost 7 years ago in the South Fulton and Chattahoochee Hills areas by co-leaders Joey Mitchell and Greg Sudmeier, received an honorary Proclamation from Councilman Jaceey Sebastian, Mayor Kobi, and the entire Council of the City of South Fulton, GA. The Proclamation cites the long-term success of The Bridge, which inspires racial healing through open and honest dialogue and strong relationship building here in the local area, as well as a large following on national social media. Joey and Greg were accompanied by many regular members of The Bridge. The Bridge continues to build its member base, holding regular meetings for the purpose of "Healing the Racial Divide, One Conversation At A Time." Wilkerson Mill

Wilkerson Mill is located about one mile upstream from the Owen Cochran Mill on Little Bear Creek. This mill is probably one hundred years old or older. Before it was called Wilkerson Mill, many people referred to this mill as Bearden’s Mill. Mr. Bearden was one of the earliest owners of the mill. Mr. Bearden was a great uncle of Jack Thompson who owned and operated the mill for fifty hears. Wilkerson Mill was owned and operated by the Thompson family and relatives for about 75 years. One outsider did own the mill during this time span. Mr. V. W. Denton owned the mill for 10 years. People were envious of Mr. Denton because he generated his own power from Little Bear Creek to electrify his home. Nobody else in the area had electricity.

The present water wheel on the mill was purchased by Jack Thompson in 1937. He saw an ad in the Market Bulletin for a steel water wheel located in Hartwell, Georgia. A mill in Hartwell was closing and had put the water wheel up for sale. Jack Thompson and his sons went and got the wheel and took it apart piece by piece. They numbered each part of the wheel, so they would know where every piece went when they put it back together. This is the second wheel and the first steel wheel the mill ever had.

There was a wood wheel prior to the steel wheel.

The mill was used until the late 1960s. The mill has had two owners since the Thompson family owned it. The present owner is Gene Griffith, who is restoring the mill with the help of some Amish families from Pennsylvania. Perhaps with the correct preservation, this mill will be around for future generations to enjoy.

Tour of Homes - A Welcoming Experience

Seven host families decked their halls, barns, & farms to welcome nearly 100 guests in the 2024 Chatt Hills Holiday Tour of Homes on December 8.

The tour offered guests a “twofer” – a self-guided scenic drive and guided tours of uniquely rural homesteads. As guests drove the scenic roads in Chatt Hills, many saw the hidden treasures of open pastures, working farms, and quaint country homes for the first time. Other long-time residents on the tour saw their old “stomping grounds” from their youth, and visions of what it means to “Keep Chatt Hills Rural.”

The seven featured homesteads were cheerfully decorated with festive greenery and yuletide collectibles. As each host led a tour of their home, guests seemed captivated with the personal touches that filled each room – quilts, woodworking objects, art, family photos, and heirlooms – which all helped tell the story of the home and its family.

We invited each host to thank their guests and to share a few words about their experience.

Cherry Hollow Farm (event venue): Carter & Laura Williamson

We host nearly 40 events a year with 300-400 people a weekend, so we’re accustomed to giving tours. And yet, it was extra special for us to give tours to our neighbors and nearby guests for this holiday tour of homes. We received about 50 guests on the tour and talked & walked with most of them through the venue. Those who arrived while we were giving a tour were invited to join in or meander on their own. What struck us the most was the number of Chatt Hills residents who didn’t know we’re here – they seemed genuinely shocked to see we’re so closely embedded in the rural community. We were also excited that our guests seemed delighted to learn about all of the artifacts we’ve rescued and incorporated into our event structure. We thank all of the guests and hope they will return in the future. For more information on our venue visit: www.cherryhollowfarm.com.

Little Bit Farm: Mike & Rachel McBurnett

Being on the tour was an honor and a deeply humbling experience. We thank the 79 wonderful guests who toured our farm, and my sisters, brothers-inlaw, and friends for their valuable help with the tour. We were touched by the kind words from so many visitors, most of whom we had never met, who remarked on how warm and inviting our home felt. It was heartwarming to see our guests feel so at ease in our home that they didn’t want to leave. Many were curious about our farm and our beef business, and we were so glad to share that part of our lives with them. We even sold some beef and crafts during the tour, and others have already said they'll be back to make purchases next week. If you did not have the opportunity to tour our farm, we invite you to visit our website: https://littlebitfarmtotable.com

Tangled Vines

Muscadine Vineyard: Doug and Susan Edmondson

First of all, thank you to Chatt Hills Holiday Tour of Homes for hosting this event. Everyone

couldn’t stop talking about the “hidden gems” of our beautiful city. We enjoyed sharing our family memories displayed in our home – the Santa gourds made by my sister, family quilts, heirloom furniture, and all parts of our cozy home. Showcasing Tangled Vines Vineyard was a lot of fun. People seemed to enjoy seeing the vines and hearing the story of the muscadines. One couple had no idea what a muscadine was! We invite you to like our Facebook and come back during our muscadine season: www.facebook. com/tangledvinesmuscadine.

Four Winds Farmhouse: Dave Whitten and Catherine Huston

What a truly heartwarming experience! Having the incredible opportunity to host an open house during the Chatt Hills Holiday Tour of Homes was a fantastic way to connect with the community, especially being "newcomers" to the city. Sharing our Christmas decorations, home, and animals created such a welcoming and festive atmosphere. We enjoyed sharing our story, the history of the home, and learning about others. Building these connections makes a new place feel like home. What a memorable way to spread holiday cheer! I hope Chatt Hills keeps up this amazing tradition!

Mr. Christmas's Hide-Away for the Holiday: Stanton Varnado

I was honored to be a part of the tour. I enjoyed the pre-tour for the hosts on the day before so we could all experience the magic of each home. As guests started arriving for my tour and my story unfolded about the home, I discovered that many people knew the history of Virginia and Henley Phillips, the former owners. It was so exciting to hear wonderful stories about the lovely couple, I am honored to continue their story. I was delighted to share my holiday décor and passion for collectibles, and it was wonderful to meet so many people in the neighborhood, I hope the friendships continue. Thanks to all those who

made the magic of the season come to life. Let's all do our best to keep the "Light" alive in Chattahoochee Hills.

Hidden Hill Haven: Seth and Jessie Cohn

What a magical whirlwind! We met and connected with so many interesting people. We are looking forward to future community events where we can continue to engage with our amazing neighbors! We’re pretty sure we’re now future beekeepers, eggnog samplers, and musical theater companions! It was so great to meet such a fun diverse group. Thanks to all who dropped by!

SunnySide Farm:

Laurie Searle & Sam Smith

We were overwhelmed with joy as 50 guests – now friends – visited our SunnySide Farm throughout the afternoon. It was such fun to actually meet folks I’ve only followed on Facebook, get to know others we’ve volunteered with, and welcome first-time visitors to Chatt Hills. It was even more fun to showcase our many hobbies and exchange stories from our visitors about their hobbies too. This was the first time we ever showed our home on tour. What I learned is how your house tells the story of your life – of the family you love, your hobbies that bring you joy, and your life well-lived. And when you share your home with new friends and old, it can be one of the best holiday treasures of the season!

Thanks & Acknowledgements

Thank you to the guests who participated in our Chatt Hills Holiday Tour of Homes. We’re glad you enjoyed yourselves and hope y’all come back. Thank you to the Chatt Hills Community Outreach initiative that hosted the event, and the Chattahoochee Hills Destination Marketing Organization, our event sponsor. And thank you to our committee members: Laurie Searle, Bridget Arrington, Laura Richards, Tanya Cole, Ruby Foster, and Robbie Rokovitz. Have a Happy New Year!

IV Vitamin Hydration Therapy

Essential Wellness 360 is thrilled to announce our relaunch of an elevated IV Hydration in 2025!

Why an IV? What can IV Hydration do for you?

Science tells us the intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver essential fluids, antioxidants, electrolytes, medications, and important vitamins to the human body, to restore optimum hydration, support the immune system, and remedy a variety of conditions.Although there are different ways to administer micronutrients, (vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and amino acids that serve major roles in the metabolic processes) providing them via the intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) routes may be the most effective ways of correcting the essential vitamin and mineral intracellular deficits in certain individuals. As the name suggests, intravenous administration provides direct delivery to the bloodstream; bypassing any obstacles in the digestive system that may hinder absorption. This results in 100% absorption of the vitamins and minerals. Oral absorption of a nutrient is often affected by food or impaired by other nutrients and minerals. Additionally, IV administration can prevent gastrointestinal side effects such as upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting which can be limiting for proper dosing and adherence. Improved absorption with reduced GI adverse effects may make IV administration a more suitable option for many individuals.

Founded by real estate attorney and entrepreneur Mehrnush Saadat, Soberish was inspired by her personal journey using holistic wellness products, herbal remedies, adaptogens, nootropics, CBD, and THC to manage her health issues. The boutique is thrilled to bring its curated selection of innovative and functional products to Serenbe, and specifically in Mado, a health and wellness-focused portion of the community.

Explore what you can find at Soberish Serenbe: On-The-Go Cooler: Upon entering the boutique, customers will find an on-the-go cooler stocked with ready-todrink, non-alcoholic cocktails, beers, wines, and wellness beverages infused with adaptogens – the perfect opportunity to sip and sample before committing to a multi-pack. Offerings change regularly.

Non-Alcoholic Wines: Customers can browse an impressive selection of non-alcoholic wines. These wines, produced using traditional winemaking techniques and then de-alcoholized, ensure drinkers can enjoy the full range of flavors without the alcohol content.

Non-Alcoholic Beers: The vast non-alcoholic beer collection offers the taste and experience of traditional beers. These beverages are typically made using the same ingredients and brewing processes as regular beers, including fermentation, but undergo an additional step to remove or reduce the alcohol content to 0.5% ABV or lower.

Non-Alcoholic Spirits: Guests will find the shelves lined with an extensive range of alternative spirits crafted to mimic the taste and complexity of traditional spirits like tequila, vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum. Non-alcoholic liqueurs, bitters, mixers, and syrups are combined to add unique flavors and depth to cocktails and are often derived from a blend of herbs, spices, fruits, and botanicals.

Adaptogens: Adaptogens are natural substances, typically

derived from plants and herbs, which are believed to help the body by regulating stress response and supporting overall balance and homeostasis.

Gummies + Goodies: CBD gummies from top brands like Plain Jane, BLNCD, and Go Easy line the shelves, offering flavors such as mixed berry, cherry lime cola, and pink champagne. These tasty gummies help reduce pain, inflammation, and stress, promoting relaxation and vitality. Plain Jane’s cult-favorite CBD Sleep Gummies, with melatonin and sustainably sourced CBD, are perfect for a restful night’s sleep. Did you know that the area of Chattahoochee Hills used to be a part of Campbell County before it merged with Fulton County? In 1870, our County Seat was moved a mile or two up the road into Fairburn. I would like to invite you to join our new facebook page: Friends of Fairburn's Historic Courthouse Square, https://www.facebook.com/groups/3080101235471442/?re f=share&mibextid=NSMWBT. We are trying to save the Old Campbell County Courthouse from being torn down. Many of you have memories of that grand old Courthouse. You might remember formal pictures on the steps, dance classes inside, ladies' quilting groups meetings, years of festivals on the grounds, and a library was there for a while, Girl Scout meetings, and the Old Campbell County Historical Society was housed there for years. Join us; we need you in great numbers. Share your memories and photos of the Courthouse. Lend your voice to ours so that soon when we speak to the City of Fairburn we have many instead of few. Spread the word. Tell your friends.

Link to the website: https://www.artfarmatserenbe.org/ events/food-writing-workshop

From memoirs to cookbooks to blogs to critiques, it's all about food.

Food...it's the foundation of daily life and the heart of so many of our memories with family and friends. We'll spend a day-and-a-half with each instructor exploring the craft of food writing. Whether you've been thinking of creating that family cookbook documenting both recipes and shared experiences, or perhaps you want to include more food stories in your social media, maybe submit your stories for publication, or start that first cookbook - our Plate to Page workshop will help you advance your journey.

Learn from the experts...

• Rosalind Bentley on the fundamentals of non-fiction writing: how to keep your reader involved in your story.

• John Kessler on how to help your reader experience the food without ever actually tasting it.

• Angie Mosier on how to visually present what you're writing about.

No particular experience is necessary; all you need is a love of writing and reading, and a sense of curiosity!

Featured Artist ~ Mary CollinsShepard

As an artist, my work revolves around the captivating medium of Gelli printing. This fascinating technique employs a silicone pad onto which I apply a palette of paints—ranging from acrylics and India inks to shimmering metallics—in vibrant, abstract blends. Each piece is a unique transfer onto diverse papers such as print, rice, tissue, photographic, deli, and drafting paper, resulting in a spectrum of textures. To enhance the allure of my finished prints, I often integrate metallic leaf embellishments.

My selection of subject matter varies. At times, I am guided by a specific color palette, leading to a series of similar yet individually distinct prints. On other occasions, the process is more spontaneous, allowing me to explore how various colors intermingle and react with one another, often with surprising and delightful outcomes.

The allure of Gelli printing lies in the thrill of the reveal; the moment the print is unveiled is one of both anticipation and discovery. Each print is a singular entity, impossible to replicate. Some prints elicit a sense of wonder, the thought of "Wow, I wish I could repeat that," while others serve as

a reminder that experimentation is as much about what doesn't work as what does.

Inspiration for my art flows from my passion as a gardener and student of natural history. The natural world is a constant muse, with its leaves, flowers, insects, birds, seashells, and sand frequently and organically appearing within my work.

To create texture, I often incorporate elements outside the natural realm. I delight in repurposing the overlooked— everyday items like bubble wrap, stencils, avocado bags, corrugated cardboard, paper tubes, and plastic netting— which contribute unique and unexpected designs to my prints.

My latest artistic exploration involves translating my Gelli prints onto textiles. These prints lend themselves beautifully to garments, offering a bold and striking statement. This fusion of print and textile represents a dynamic evolution of my work, driven by the endless possibilities and enchantment of the Gelli printing process.

Mary's art was recently exhibited at the Serenbe Holiday Market. To purchase prints, scarves, pillows, and other wearables, contact Mary at moltomaria@gmail.com or call: 865-660-7151, or visit Dogwood Gallery.

Good Trouble Quilts By

This book is personal to me. I was born in 1954, the same year that the United States Supreme Court decided Brown v. Board of Education, effectively integrating schools that had once been segregated. That decision which ruled that the separate but equal doctrine in public education was unconstitutional changed the arc of my life.

I have vidid and personal memories of all the things you read about in history books about the Jim Crow era. Where I lived in my small town in Arkansas was literally called Colored Town. White people lived across Main Street in White Town. At the movie theater, blacks sat in the balcony while whites sat downstairs. If we bought food at the restaurants such as they were, it had to be picked up at the back door. For a long time, I wondered if white water tasted different from colored water.

But most importantly I received the first six years of my formal education at the T.W. Daniel school. It was a school only for black children grades 1 – 12. When I was in the 7th grade, I attended school with white children for the very first time.

So, you can understand why I feel a deep gratitude for civil rights leaders who risked everything to change the world for little girls like me.

After graduating from Vanderbilt Law School (a long way from Colored Town), I spent the rest of my adult life in Atlanta, GA where John Lewis became my representative in Congress. He was beloved in Atlanta for all he had done early in his life for the cause of civil rights and for his untiring determination to make the world a better place. He was also beloved because he was just a decent human being.

By 2020, I had retired from my professional life as a lawyer and had co-founded the Atlanta Quilt Festival, an annual celebration of African American quilts. When Congressman Lewis died in 2020, it was an instant no brainer for me that his legacy had to be stitched in thread and cloth to be remembered forever with warmth, joy, and love. And so it shall be.

The 89 quilts in this book are my personal thank you to Congressman Lewis, a great man. I hope you enjoy the artistic beauty of the quilts, receive the messages of the quilts, and affirm your commitment to fight for equality for all.

Black History Month

Black History Month, celebrated each year during February, is a chance for Americans to learn details of their nation’s history that, unfortunately, are far too often neglected and pushed to the wayside. As the saying goes, Black history is American history — and it’s a varied and rich history. A wise nation honors and learns from its past. It refuses to let the most important facts about our shared and collective memory disappear into the depths of forgotten history. What happened in the past shapes and informs where we are heading in the future, and it’s of paramount importance to set aside a month for learning as much as we can about Black history.

Community BRICKWORKS REPORT

Community Brickworks Update

Food Pantry

Between Thanksgiving and the onset of cold weather, November kept us on our toes at the pantry. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to provide our families with everything they needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, ham, or chicken. In November we served 96 families (188 adults and 152 children), and welcomed 10 new families. We were also able to distribute blankets to many of our clients and prepared for coat distribution in December.

We want to thank Northwest Exterminating Company of Newnan for their canned good donation. We also appreciate The Women’s Networking Group and Anne Michaud for giving us the opportunity to share about the ways our organization supports the community, and for the generous donations from ticket sale proceeds and individual members. As always, our volunteers and our clients are grateful for all the ways the community supports us. Thank you!

Library Update

2024 was a wonderful year at the library. Thanks to all who checked out books, joined us for Toddler Tuesdays, and to those who attended or lead a class. We couldn’t have done it without the tireless work of our volunteers: those who work the circulation desk, our Toddler Tuesday leaders, and of course, Nan, who oversees all the details! Our final event of the year was a wonderful retelling of The Polar Express. Our very own Fire Chief Brett was the conductor and story teller extraordinaire. His wife, Melia, added to the magic with sweet treats for the kids!

The library will be going through a restruction/painting/furniture/etc starting in January-April (approximately). During this time we will need to close down. Library Hours: Contact Nan McGuffey about Toddler Tuesdays, 9:30-11:00 which will hopefully move to the Art Room. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram Neighbors Helping Neighbors! CommunityBrickworks.org

The class is intended for adults of any age. We also welcome children capable of independent quiet focus. Parents must stay with their children.

The class will be held during daytime hours on a weekday, but we have some flexibility if there is sufficient demand we will explore other days/times.

Each student must have their own instrument for the class. It should be an instrument-quality uke (not a toy) that can be tuned and will generally hold the tune as you play. We have partnered wtih Uke Republic, an amazing local store in Austell, for discounted entry-level instruments, and will order them around January 23 based on demand. There are options for smaller (soprano) and medium (concert) ukuleles; they will come with a clip-on tuner and fabric instrument case. Contact us for combining the order to get a group discount.

The instructor is Tamara Schwartz. She picked up her first ukulele four years ago as a founding member of Serenbe’s Ukeladies, call her at 404-775-4263.

City Developing Strategies to Enhance the Rico Historic Crossroads Area

The Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Atlanta District Council has launched its 2024-2025 Center for Leadership mTAP (Mini-TAP) program, inviting public agencies and nonprofit organizations to submit project challenges and problem statements for consideration. This program offers free technical assistance to tackle land use and real estate issues, aligning with ULI’s mission to shape the built environment for transformative community impact.

The mTAP initiative pairs participating organizations with expert teams to address specific land use or community development challenges. Eligible clients include government entities, public agencies, and nonprofits in the Atlanta region.

This year, the City of Chattahoochee Hills submitted a request for assistance to build upon its 2021 Rico Historic Crossroads District mTAP, focusing on refining the residential element of the plan into a more actionable development concept. While the scope and deliverables are still being finalized, the city has partnered with a talented team of professionals from diverse fields, including:

• Niti Gajjar – Cooper Carry (architecture and design)

• Sam Higgins – Parkside Partners (commercial real estate)

• Lauren Martin – Salas O’Brien (engineering & design)

• Jess Nelson – Fifteen70 Development (design and real estate development)

• Teddie Schroeder – Kimley-Horn & Associates (engineering, planning, and design)

• Rasheed Bracey – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (housing)

This dynamic team, with the input of public stakeholders, will develop strategies to enhance the Rico Historic Crossroads area, facilitating thoughtful and impactful growth. We are eager to see how their efforts will shape the future of this important community hub.

Faith, Family, Friends, Freedom, Fun, and FITNESS

My family creed that my dad ingrained in us when we were kids is known as “R5F.” He has signed every letter and card this way, he has had vanity car tags that read R5F, and we even have family members who have body art of RF5 in some fashion. The R stands for our last name, Rokovitz, and the 5 Fs are what we live by: “Faith, Family, Friends, Freedom, and Fun. It was not until recently that I decided I would modify my dad’s creed by adding a sixth F for Fitness. To me, fitness plays a large role in the ability to realize the other 5 Fs.

2025 is a new year. On average, around 12% to 15% of New Year's resolutions are related to fitness or exercise, which often includes joining a gym. Several studies and surveys suggest that gym memberships typically see a significant increase in January, with many people motivated by the start of a new year to focus on fitness and health. This spike can sometimes lead to a 30% to 50% increase in memberships during January, compared to the rest of the year. However, it's important to note that while many people join a gym as part of their New Year's resolution, a large percentage of them may stop attending regularly after just a few months. The initial motivation tends to fade as people face challenges in sticking to their fitness goals. Before you spend money on a gym membership or even invest in equipment because you plan to work out from home or make a garage gym, ask yourself one question: Will I commit to going at least three to four days a week? Personally, I would recommend committing to a fitness program where there is some accountability. For instance, you can pick a fitness location that has an app that requires you to book the class ahead of time and maybe even charge your account if you do not show up. Or pick a place that provides fitness in a group setting where others are doing the same thing or something at least similar where you can feed off their energy. Another tip is to pick a time that will work best with your busy schedule with family and work. For some this is early morning, for others it is in the middle of the day, and for those who still have energy it is at night.

For the last 7 ½ years, I have made it my mission to engage in some sort of fitness activity at least four days a week. For me, my preference is an early morning routine.

One thing I can say for sure is that I have never been thrilled to hear my alarm at 4:00 am. But I can easily count on one hand the number of times I skipped getting up and going to the gym even though I would prefer to remain in that warm, cozy bed another hour or two. This requires discipline and motivation. My motivation is not to develop some sort of beach body. My motivation is to improve my mobility and flexibility, gain better posture and core strength, enhance balance and stability, improve coordination and agility, prevent injuries, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance mental focus. These things become increasingly challenging as we age.

One of the sayings I like to use often is, “I would rather be the oldest person in the gym than the youngest person in the nursing home.”

Functional fitness workouts strengthen muscles used in daily tasks such as lifting, carrying, squatting, or pushing. For example, exercises like squats and deadlifts strengthen the muscles used when picking up groceries, lifting a child, or carrying heavy bags. This makes these activities easier and reduces the risk of injury. Functional fitness exercises also help to maintain or improve flexibility and range of motion in the joints. This makes everyday tasks, like bending down to tie your shoes or reaching for something on a high shelf, easier and less likely to cause injury.

Recently, I chose to seek my certificate as a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. I did this to not only enhance my knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of functional fitness, but also to help others achieve their fitness goals, overcome challenges, improve their health, and gain confidence. It is very rewarding to see others make progress and make a positive change in their lives. I hope you choose to dedicate some time to your fitness (and nutrition!) this year and see what a difference it will make in all that you do.
