The advanced technology is helping Unison to win many new customers in the oil and gas sector, including
manufacturers of process tubing and
hydraulic systems for topside and subsea

eliminate potential leak paths and points of failure; and bending expensive and
difficult specialist alloy tubing materials
that have been selected for their corrosion resistant properties.

Top speakers from industry and government confirmed for Offshore Europe 2013 Eleven panel sessions will give visitors to the SPE Offshore Europe 2013 conference unprecedented access to hear the views of top industry executives, government ministers and discipline specialists.
The panel sessions will all aim to respond to the conference theme, ‘The Next 50 Years’, and
they form just one part of the free-to-attend event to be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from 3-6 September 2013.
Malcolm Webb, Chairman for SPE Offshore Europe 2013 and Chief Executive of industry trade association Oil & Gas UK, said: “The
current strong resurgence in activity shows that the offshore oil and gas industry has an exciting and important future ahead of it,
with planned projects we already know about spanning the next 50 years. However, with great opportunities come great challenges. Accordingly, at the Offshore Europe 2013 conference, we are bringing together leaders from the industry, government and other stakeholders to address the issues of the moment.
“The conference will be twice the size of anything which Offshore Europe has
staged before and will embrace commercial, employment, operational, safety and environmental aspects as well as the policy and regulatory framework in which through the 21st century.”
Five of the panel sessions have a confirmed line-up of speakers – the remaining six sessions will be announced next month. These sessions range from oil and gas in the future energy mix, North Sea drilling and industry progress since Macondo to

SPE Offshore Europe 2013: The next 50 years The UK oil and gas industry represents a continuing success
story, both in terms of future production and a strong supply
chain. And although the future of the North Sea seems assured, there are plenty of challenges ahead.
Yet challenges drive innovation, and the industry has a deserved international reputation for excellence in engineering, manufacturing and technology allowing it to operate successfully in the mature basin of the UKCS and to export its expertise. ‘The Next 50 Years’ is therefore an appropriate theme for the forthcom-

largest upstream oil and gas exhibition and conference outside North America. Senior representatives from the global indus-
try, UK and international governments and academia will come
together to lead the sessions during the four-day event which is free to attend for all registrants.
Over the four days of the conference there will be a series of
panel sessions, peer-reviewed technical sessions, topical lunches and breakfast briefings. These sessions will feature a mix of se-
nior representatives from international operating companies and contractors, as well as government regulators and politicians.
Topics cover all areas of interest to anyone directly involved in
the oil and gas industry or, indeed, anyone interested in the future outlook for this business.
Following its successful launch in 2011, the Deep Water Zone will be an important feature of the show. Deep water exploration and
production is playing an ever increasing role in the industry with a growing number of discoveries being made in deep and ultra-
deep waters off the coasts of Brazil, West and East Africa, and in
the Gulf of Mexico. Exhibiting companies from this rapidly evolving sector will display their latest products and services, and a

chain of companies including operators, drilling contractors and
oilfield service companies. Over 1500 organisations are expected this year in the largest exhibition of the show’s history. Reflective of the global nature of the industry as a whole there is a large
international exhibitor presence at the event with participating companies from over 40 countries.
With so many industry leaders and influencers under one roof, there are ample opportunities to network and catch up with
colleagues from around the world. Comments Matthias Bichsel, Shell’s Projects and Technology Director: “Offshore Europe is
still one of the world’s premier events for establishing business relationships in the oil & gas industry.”
A new ‘Energy Festival’ is planned for the week of the show,
hosted by Aberdeen City Council. It will include a series of exciting evening events and will allow the show to carry on into the
evening with plenty more opportunities to network, socialise and enjoy Europe’s energy capital, Aberdeen.

GUIDANCE ON HYPERBARIC EVACUATION SYSTEMS FROM IMCA When a vessel is severely damaged there may come a time when it has to be abandoned. For such a situation vessels are required to have adequate lifeboats (or life rafts) on board for all personnel. In such an emergency, the evacuation of divers in saturation
represents a particular problem as they cannot be readily decompressed in order to be evacuated in the same way as other crew
members. The divers need to be transferred to a pressurised compartment which can be detached from the diving system on the vessel and launched or floated into the sea.
“This means that for all saturation diving operations a hyperbaric rescue unit (HRU) needs to be provided that, in the event of a vessel evacuation, is capable of evacuating the maximum number of divers,” explains Jane Bugler, Technical Director of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA).
Planning and facilities also need to be in place to ensure that the HRU and its occupants are taken to a designated location where they can be decompressed back to surface pressure in a safe and controlled manner.”
A newly published IMCA document ‘Guidance on Hyperbaric Evacuation Systems’ (IMCA D 052) aims to provide guidance on minimum requirements needed, and to identify the various factors that need to be considered during the planning phase before diving
commences. It also aims to provide guidance on the risk assessment process required to ensure that the necessary standard of safety is achieved.
“IMCA D 052 also seeks to establish standard terminology for the various parts of a hyperbaric evacuation system.” adds Jane Bugler. “As it contains many items of technical advice in its 68 pages, it is assumed that the reader has knowledge of saturation diving technology, physiology and equipment.”
The new guidance document has sections on background and explanation; medical aspects of hyperbaric evacuation; elements to
be considered in the development of a hyperbaric evacuation system; equipment and interfaces; development of documentation for
hyperbaric evacuation system construction and operation; elements to be considered for the execution of a hyperbaric evacuation and

PARKER INTEGRATED API-RATED INSTRUMENTATION VALVES DELIVER SYSTEM-LEVEL GAINS FOR WELLHEAD OEMS Block and bleed and double block and bleed assemblies provide compact, reliable process-to-instrument solutions.
Wellhead equipment suppliers and operators can make major
enhancements to their ‘Christmas tree’ and related equipment designs by using a new range of API-rated integrated valve
assemblies from the Instrumentation Products Division of Parker
Hannifin - the global leader in motion and control technologies.
The integration offered by Parker’s new valve assemblies reduces weight by as much as 40% compared with double-block-and-
bleed configurations using discrete valves, and can reduce space envelopes even further - by as much as 75%. Users can choose from a range of connection styles including flanged, welded,
Grayloc hubs and Autoclave cone-and-thread connectors - to suit the particular installation.
The new product range provides integrated process-to-
instrument interfacing solutions that dramatically reduce weight
and size, and eliminate many potential leak paths and risk,
compared with configurations based on discrete valves and connectors - the typical implementation approach used up to now.
Based on the design of one of the leading process to instrument valve manufacturers, Parker’s Pro-Bloc range of integrated
manifolds for interfacing instrumentation to process piping, the new Pro-Bloc API range integrates a complete double-blockand-bleed assembly of fire safe isolation and venting valves
that is suitable for interfacing process pressure and temperature instruments. The assembly is available in three main forms: with ball valves, needle valves, or high-performance needle valves
that can also meet the Class A or Class B ultra-low-emissions levels of the ISO 15848 standard. The new valve assemblies
are initially available in three choices of pressure ratings: 5K, 10K and 15K PSI, and have all been independently tested for conformance with the API 6A specification for wellhead and Christmas tree equipment.
Up to now, OEMs and operators producing
Christmas tree configurations and wellhead control systems have typically constructed any instrumentation interfacing
subsystems required using larger processsized valves that are rated to the API
specifications preferred in this application sector. These systems have not benefited from the substantial size and weight
savings - and designed-for-purpose flow paths - that are typical of the double-
block-and-bleed manifolds that are readily available for instrument interfacing in other parts of the process world.
The integrated design also eliminates
numerous interconnection joints, each of
which is a potential leak path and source
of unreliability, and system building cost;
this can amount to a reduction of as many
as four potential leak points compared to a system built from discrete valves.
The close-coupled flow paths inside Parker’s Pro-Bloc API process-to-
instrument valve assemblies provide
another significant advantage, as they are ‘purpose-designed’ to support accuracy of measurement. In the case of the ball
valve variant of the design, the flow path
is completely straight, with a uniform bore.
www.sosmagazine.biz
It is not possible to create such a short
28
flow path with a system based on discrete valves, and it can also be very difficult to avoid bends - and sometimes changes
of bore sizes - that impact measurement
accuracy by generating turbulence. Parker has already had feedback from end users
the technology available to the wider market. “The API valve assemblies will cut the weight and size of the instrument-interfacing parts of their equipment to a small fraction of many current implementations,” says Spencer
Nicholson, Business Development Manager of Parker Hannifin’s
Instrumentation Products Division, Europe. “The highly integrated nature of the designs also provides near-perfect flow paths
- with many fewer potential leakage points - a considerable reliability advantage for the harsh and remote operating

Nautilus Rigging (UK) Ltd
Secure, Safe Subsea Lifting Solutions NAUTILUS Rigging (UK) Ltd, the leading
innovators in safe lifting solutions, have introduced their new and unique range
of ROV operated lifting hooks for subsea operations. The hooks utilize patented
Nautilus “positive locking” technology, an
innovation that significantly enhances the
operational and safety aspects of subsea/ ROV lifting operations.
The Nautilus patented “positive locking”
system was sighted as the deciding factor in winning the Woefel, Best Mechanical Engineering Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at
OTC and the Offshore Support Vessel
conference Innovation of the year award. Bill Toon, Managing Director, said “ The
nautilus ROV hook is specifically designed to meet industry concerns and prevents unintentional self release of the load
which is a known, inherent, design hazard associated with the standard spring latch
“snap on” design of ROV hooks, especially prevalent when loads pass through the
“transition zone” (from air to water) which, under the varying hydrodynamic forces,

hook and self release the load which often results in costly equipment damage and recovery operations.
The risk of self release is eliminated with

until released by the ROV, in addition the positive locking arm also prevents the
hooks from unintentional hooking on to

of the launch. I am pleased to advise that we have recently completed the first full
production batch and both models are in
stock and available for immediate supply. Nautilus ROV hooks are the cost efficient solution to ensuring load integrity,
safety, and security for all subsea and ROV assisted lifting and installation operations”
NH-SS22E are supplied with a bespoke 316 stainless steel ROV activation wire fitted, All Nautilus Hooks are manufactured to exceed industry
standards and are individually proof tested to 2.5 x the WLL, in addition
Nautilus Hooks are individually numbered for traceability and come complete with the manufacturers test certification. Nautilus Rigging has produced an

William Hackett Chains Ltd
Manufacturing Chains in the West Midlands since 1892
William Hackett cHains ltd.
Hot Stab
William Hackett Chains Ltd. has manufactured chain products in the West Midlands since 1892 making it one of the oldest companies in this industry. In recent years the manufacturing in the UK has focused on bespoke chain products and assemblies whilst cooperating with key manufacturers abroad. WHC lifting division was formed in Alnwick, Northumberland in 1989 and this operation has grown into a market leader in the UK lifting market. WHC prides itself on working closely with distributors and their clients to adapt and improve products for specific applications by using in house technical expertise and manufacturing facilities and also those of our key suppliers. This philosophy has led to the development a range of subsea lifting products designed for use by ROVs including chain hoists with ROV friendly interfaces. Originally the challenge was to try to ensure that standard hoists would function subsea but it was concluded that whilst most standard hoists would function subsea, there were hazard factors unique to the subsea environment that caused problems in standard hoists. It also became apparent that subsea operations were being undertaken at greater depths where only ROVs could work. We knew that we could engineer solutions to deal with these challenges and we developed the Hackett Shark subsea chain hoist as a result. We stock the component parts for these ROV hoists because our commitment with specialised products is the same as standard items, which is to deliver from stock. Our hydraulically driven ROV chain hoist represents a major step forward in subsea lifting. It offers complete control with the huge benefit of built in load limiting because we can factory set the hydraulics to a specific maximum load. eventualities. When a cleaning contractor can also provide the inspection services that are required the operator benefits
from only having to liaise with one company who then take
responsibility for the entire project. Here Tube Tech International details two gas cooler cleaning contracts in two very different locations.
360° Surface Contact via Bespoke Unblocking & Polishing Heads A High Pressure Compressor Discharge Cooler on a North Sea platform developed leaks. To establish the extent of damage there was a need to unblock and clean the tube bores in
preparation for full Eddy Current and IRIS inspection. Tube Tech were asked to mobilise quickly with the remit that no one knew what level or how much fouling would be found in the tubes – come prepared for the worst was the brief from the client.
An initial flood test inspection of the gas cooler showed two
leaking tubes. Tube Tech used bespoke unblocking heads to remove deposits from the tube bores whilst simultaneously

were dried. Eddy Current and IRIS inspections were performed
polishing the bores. All tubes were cleaned and confirmed as
to provide the client with a clear idea of the integrity of the remaining gas cooler tubes.
Scott Donson, Technical Sales Manager: “Having a team of
offshore trained operatives ready to mobilise at short notice was a big bonus for this client. We were able to clean and achieve
the desired standard quickly, and above all safely, allowing very searching inspection to take place. Ensuring the platform’s
shutdown progressed with the minimum of downtime and no incident was paramount”.
Gas Coolers Cleaned and Inspected in Nigeria Tube Tech International cleaned and inspected a number of
gas coolers, including Koch / Brown Fin tube units, on one of
the largest FPSOs (Floating production storage and offloading)
units in the world off the coast of Nigeria. This was the first time

integrity inspection since the unit was built three years ago and Tube Tech was awarded the contract due to their ability to both clean specialist small bore tubes (including twisted tube) and inspect the coolers.
FPSO in Nigeria
The client provided Tube Tech with a very tight timeline in order to transport both equipment and crew out to site. Cleaning
and inspection of the gas coolers took place directly beneath
FPSO flare so high temperatures were a challenge. Tube Tech technicians had a limited working area as a host of other
operations were taking place during the TAR (turnaround) so constant liaison with scaffold crew, fitters, riggers etc was essential.
Tube Tech used their unique SafeFlex™ system with bespoke
unblocking and polishing heads to clean the gas cooler tubes. These techniques and technologies were able to remove coke
formations and achieve the standard suitable for IRIS inspection without using excessive pressures or rigid semi-automated
equipment. Tube Tech also conducted an IRIS inspection which showed the tubes on the gas coolers to be in good condition.
Scott Donson, Technical Sales Manager: “With so many different

following feedback from their client’s Superintendent “Tube tech did a very professional job and it was a privilege to work with
such team players. They were very professional and took safety
as their prime driver. All members of their team participated fully in all safety programs. Their equipment was all fit for purpose
and was well maintained with all relevant paperwork and certs.
These were available on request. They completed all their tasks on schedule and with zero incident and accident”.
Tube Tech International continue to invest in research and to clean heat transfer equipment on offshore platforms.
Appreciating the critical nature of most offshore cleaning
contracts the company constantly questions the ‘this is how it
has always been done’ nature of traditional cleaning techniques and Tube Tech’s clients are impressed with the level of commitment they receive.

Contamination Control Most hydraulic systems are contaminated with solid, liquid and gaseous particles, either generated externally or
internally through fluids, component wear and tear, or just bad housekeeping. These contaminates can cause system inefficiencies or system failures.
One of the first questions asked when presenting or training
about condition monitoring products is “How much is this going to cost me?” Our response is always “How much is this going to save you”? Let’s look at a few points where investing in condition monitoring can help you save costs.
We know that around 70 – 90% of hydraulic breakdowns can be
attributed to particulate contamination. That’s quite a high figure in anyone’s terms if we can reduce this figure by 30 – 40% then surely there is a cost saving there.
So what are the costs of these breakdowns? The biggest cost
is system downtime especially in production. Add manpower
and more critical component clearances. For that reason we recommend fitting low cost particle monitors.
Online particle monitors can analyse your systems 24/7 initiating

pressures, loads and speeds. When contamination is a problem, over a period of time, these can all be affected by causing wear and cracks at critical component surface areas and therefore
begin to lose the efficiency of the component and how well it
operates. Sometimes the component may even stop operating due to the blocking of small orifices by large contaminates. Typically we are looking at component clearances of 0.5 micron up to 50

eliminating and reducing high cost breakdowns and unscheduled downtimes. All this, for a relative small cost.
So if your question is – ‘Can I afford contamination monitoring products?’ the answer is – ‘Can you afford not to?’ The benefits are online particle counting is
