PoRt neWs port of grimsby east proposed ship repair facility with 200 tonne boat hoist The Port of Grimsby East will soon be overhauled as part of a £1.8 million project which will see new vessel repair facilities with a 200 tonne boat hoist. The refurbishment will include work to the 80 year old slipways, with the focal point a new 200 tonne marine hoist – nearly 17m high and more than 11m wide, capable of handling almost anything that enters the lock gates. As well as being a hub for offshore wind farm servicing and maintenance, the Port of Grimsby East will have the facilities in place to tend to vessel repair and maintenance, too. Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises (GFDE) has secured match-funding from the Growing the Humber Regional Growth Fund pot, and is working closely with North East Lincolnshire Council, Grimsby Slipway Ltd and Grimsby Ship Repairers and Engineers Association.

We have collectively recognised the requirement to improve the facility in the light of the change to the type of vessels that now come in to Grimsby. We have refurbished an existing slipway, which will be maintained as an additional facility for Grimsby Shipyard Services. The conventional slipway will lift vessels up to 400 tonnes and will compliment the 200 tonne boat hoist that is being commissioned. This will create a facility that will attract more vessels into Grimsby, create more commercial activity and jobs. Grimsby historically has a skills base in marine engineering and this can only increase as the facility adds to the potential for work here. It is a significant commitment by this company and North East Lincolnshire Council, backed by the confidence in offshore renewables which has been underpinned by recent announcements by Dong Energy. Martyn Boyers, Chief Executive of GFDE.

p4 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

The Port of Grimsby East has two 80m runways which will extend out from the quayside, with the giant marine hoist and travel lift using them as a track. The vessels will then be brought onto the strengthened quay, allowing multiple vessels to be worked on at once, as opposed to the current single position. More than 40 vessels a day have been using Port of Grimsby East at peak times, with construction of Westermost Rough, Race Bank and Humber Gateway taking place alongside the operations of Lincs, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, as well as initial expeditions to Hornsea and Dogger Bank.

Thames marine training and skills to be stepped up as academy launches Marine training on the River Thames is to receive a major boost with the launch of a new skills organisation that will support crew training and development on the UK’s busiest waterway.

Alfa Laval PureBallast (Pictured) near completion of required USCG testing procedures Alfa Laval continues to move swiftly towards the submission of a US Coast Guard (USCG) type approval application for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3.1. The company has performed half of the required land based tests and is set to conclude the remainder of these within Q2. Alfa Laval remains on track to submit its application for USCG type approval after requisite tests of PureBallast are finished in Q2 of 2016. Half of the required land based procedures have now been completed using the USCG approved CMFDA/FDA (staining) method. The tests, which have been performed at DHI in Denmark, have all returned strong biological disinfection results. “Alfa Laval has a robust biological disinfection technology and has mobilized quickly following the USCG’s rejection of most probable number method,” says Stephen Westerling Greer, Global Business Manager for PureBallast. “As a dedicated supplier approaching 100 years of marine service, we have made USCG type approval a top priority.” Westerling Greer concludes, “Alfa Laval’s vast experience in marine engineering, combined with specific knowledge in the design of ballast water treatment systems, is allowing us to secure a fast and positive testing outcome.” To learn more about Alfa Laval PureBallast and Alfa Laval’s approach to ballast water treatment, visit:

The Thames Skills Academy (TSA) is a new, employer-led organisation that will provide marine and ports operations training, development, and support a coherent career path for people starting their working life on the Thames. The initiative supported by the Port of London Authority (PLA), Transport for London, Tideway (who are delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel) and the Company of Watermen & Lightermen, will facilitate and broker training, including marine apprenticeships, on behalf of employers. The development is essential, with the PLA’s Thames Vision project showing use of the river is set to increase markedly over the next two decades for travel, moving freight and supporting major construction projects. The Vision forecasts that the number of passenger trips will double to 20 million, and freight moved between terminals on the Thames will rise rapidly back to the 2014 peak of over five million tonnes. The catalyst for the creation of the TSA has been an increasing skills gap coupled with growing river use, and generous and timely support from Tideway. Tideway is the new independent company constructing the biggest Thames engineering project of the last century, which will deliver a much cleaner river and make extensive use of the Thames during construction too. Work is due to be completed by early 2024, but Tideway is aiming to reduce the programme by up to two years. Celebrating 25 Years Of Recruiting Seafarers Norbulk Shipping is celebrating 25 years of training and recruiting seafarers from its management offices in Riga, Latvia. The crewing and training centre that is run by Hanza Marine Management, a partner company to Norbulk Shipping, supplies 4,000 seafarers to 150 vessels and supplies a wide range of crewing recruitment and training services to its clients. This year, it is celebrating 25 years in business after the manning agency was set up in the early 90s, shortly after Latvia regained independence Peter Karlsen, Director of Norbulk Shipping, said: “We are really excited that our recruiting centre in Riga is celebrating 25 years of crewing and recruitment. I am very proud of the good reputation it has built up in the seafaring community over the last quarter of a century.” The Riga office, located in Latvia which is one of the top ten largest suppliers of seafarers worldwide, supplies crews and ratings for many different types of vessels, including chemical, products and gas tankers, bulkers, refrigerated cargo, off-shore supply and Ro-Ros. Capt Aleksandrs Goridjko, who heads up the office (pictured above), is responsible for ensuring staff follow a rigorous approval process. This involves testing knowledge, conducting interviews, reference checks, documents, endorsements, flag licenses, and visas and travel needs. He has seen the crewing sector change extensively over the last 25 years with young aspiring seafarers spending less time to become qualified, and fewer people training as engineers.

Founded in 1982, Aquafax is a leading international wholesaler and distributer of marine and industrial equipment and will be supplying the full range of Kannad Marine products to its customers, including the industry leading range of AIS MOB devices, PLBs, EPIRBs and SARTs. Commenting on the appointment of Aquafax, Justine Heeley, Kannad Marine Business Unit Manager, said, “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Aquafax, who share our commitment to helping the marine industry prepare for, and reliably respond to, emergency situations. With an impressive portfolio of customers and a large footprint across the UK and Ireland, they are the perfect partner for us to help increase our market share.” Nigel Pearson, Managing Director at Aquafax, adds, “The Kannad Marine range of marine safety equipment fits perfectly with our existing product range and we know our customers will be delighted that we are adding the range to our portfolio. We are honoured to have been selected to work with such a well known brand and look forward to a very long and successful relationship.” For more information about Kannad Marine and its emergency readiness and response solutions, please visit:

BIMCO/ICS Manpower Report predicts potential shortage of almost 150,000 officers by 2025 The latest five year BIMCO/ICS Manpower Report forecasts a serious future shortage in the supply of seafarers. The report identifies: • A current shortfall of about 16,500 officers (2.1%), but • A need for an additional 147,500 officers by 2025 to service the world merchant fleet. The global supply of officers is forecast to increase steadily, but this is predicted to be outpaced by increasing demand. Some officer categories are in especially short supply, including engineer officers at management level and officers needed for specialised ships such as chemical, LNG and LPG carriers. The report suggests that in the past five years the industry has made good progress with increasing recruitment and training levels and reducing officer wastage (i.e. retaining qualified seafarers and increasing the number of years which they serve at sea). But the report indicates that, unless training levels are increased significantly, the growth in demand for seafarers could generate a serious shortage in the total supply of officers. However, the report estimates there is a current surplus of about 119,000 ratings (15.8%), with demand only having increased by about 1% since 2010. Significantly, China is thought to have overtaken the Philippines as the largest single source of seafarers qualified for international trade (although the Philippines is still the largest source of ratings). However, data from international shipping companies suggests that the extent to which Chinese seafarers are available for international service may be more limited, with the Philippines and Russia seen as equally important sources of officers, followed closely by Ukraine and India.

Damen’s Versatile FCS 2610 shows its credentials in the oil & gas markets The Damen Shipyards Group’s Fast Crew Supplier (FCS) 2610 is proving to be every bit as effective in the oil and gas sector as it is in the offshore wind industry. The application of the renowned design in this arena is a response to a move in offshore O&G towards the high-intensity use of flexible, multi-purpose vessels wherever possible so as to minimise costs. As a twinhulled vessel, the FCS 2610 combines high speed and stability with substantial deck space for equipment and components. And, with Damen’s philosophy of building in series, the FCS 2610 is available on stock for extra fast delivery. Over 40 vessels of this model have been built to date, the majority for the support of wind farm operations, making it a well proven support vessel in the challenging waters of the North Sea as well as other locations. With its Twin Axe hull design, it provides a stable platform with plenty of deck space, ideal for duties such as crew and cargo supply. Feedback and initial orders from companies in the offshore oil and gas sector have demonstrated the FCS 2610 has a role to play in their search for the most economical ways to undertake maintenance and service work. Near the top of their lists are fast, flexible vessels capable of operating in a wide range of weather conditions and carrying quantities of both men and equipment. The FCS 2610

p8 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

fits these criteria well as a high quality, multi-purpose workhorse. Damen FCS 2610 hulls are in stock ready for outfitting to meet the specific needs of individual customers. Options include a multipurpose deck crane, flexible accommodation capacity, davits for FRC, the fitting of containers for specific roles and safety standby adaptions. Other customisations are readily available on request. The Twin Axe hull design is a stable and fuel efficient platform for accessing offshore platforms, and, as such, is a valuable member of Damen’s marine access portfolio. This portfolio anticipates the need for cost reduction and logistics improvement, alongside increased safety, in the current oil and gas climate Furthermore, the advancement of minimal facility platforms also drives the need for efficient and safe marine access solutions in place of traditional offshore crew transfer solutions.

DanPilot chooses Pilot 2000 WP Danish state owned pilot organisation DanPilot has joined the growing list of customers who have selected Baltic Workboat’s wave piercing concept in a bid to modernise their fleet. The contract is to build 2 harsh weather pilot boats with deliveries late this year. The Pilot 2000 WP is Baltic Workboat’s very own design of a heavy weather 20 metre aluminium pilot boat. Thanks to special hull design she can perform at stormy seas with significantly decreased vertical acceleration thus remarkably improving crew comfort. For winter use her hull is reinforced to withstand light ice conditions (conditions relevant to southern Baltic and Danish waters). The vessel is a proven platform already operated by pilots in Belgium, Latvia and

Estonia as well as currently being used for wind-farm charters a crew transfer vessel by a German operator. By picking our Pilot 2000 WP the DanPilot has chosen a modern vessel with top of the segment seakeeping capability and impressive course stability for year round operations combined with excellent fuel efficiency, total fuel consumption is as little as 150 litres per hour at 22 knots. The vessels for DanPilot will be powered with twin Volvo Penta D16MH main engines, each producing 478 kW at 1800 rpm, coupled with ZF665 marine gearboxes and a pair of fixed pitch propellers. DanPilot is an independent public enterprise under the Ministry of Business and Growth of Kingdom of Denmark, with the Danish Maritime Authority as the supervising

authority. DanPilot handles all pilotage through Danish territorial waters for all the transit traffic as well as for vessels entering Danish ports. The current DanPilot’s fleet consists of 32 specialised pilot boats. The new pilot boats will have different areas to operate with one to work in the North Sea and Skagerak up to 60 nm offshore of the pilot station in port of Skagen and another intended for operation in the Baltic Sea up to 60 nm offshore from the pilot station in port of Gedser. The pilot boats will be designed, built, equipped and certified according to Lloyd’s Register Special Service Craft Rules (+100A1 SSC Pilot, Mono, HSC, G3 MCH, UMS) and Rules of Danish Flag Authority.

IMCA CMID WORKSHOP TO BE HELD AT SEAWORK INTERNATIONAL The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is hosting a CMID (IMCA’s Common Marine Inspection Document) workshop at Seawork International on the morning of Wednesday 15 June aboard Ocean Scene, a vessel moored at the show which is being held in Mayflower Park, Southampton. The theme of the workshop is ‘Improving CMID Report Quality’. It will include demonstrations, presentations and discussions about CMID, and is aimed at all CMID users. Accredited Vessel Inspectors (AVIs) who attend will earn 3 CPD validation points. There are now nearly 200 AVIs and over 230 people have applied to join the scheme from countries all over the world. Qualified AVIs attending the workshop are reminded to bring their logbooks for endorsement by IMCA staff. p10 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

There is restricted space for the free to attend workshop, so early booking via events@imca-int.com is recommended. The morning begins at 09:00 with registration, tea and coffee; at 09:30 there will be a CMID update, followed by news of the new version of ‘Marine Inspection for Small Workboats’ (MISW) (IMCA M 189). A look at the new CMID software version follows; and then practical training on the eCMID training database. After a networking break, an hour will be spent on inspection report writing guidance. Following Q&A the workshop will finish at 12:15. The session will be run by Technical Adviser, Chris Baldwin who will ensure that delegates hear what vessel operators and clients want out of CMID and MISW reports. They will also be able to improve their understanding of the ISO 19011 Guide to Auditing Management Systems,

International Register of Chartered Auditors guidelines and the Institution of Engineering & Technology’s ‘Guide to Technical Report Writing’. Added to which there will be an opportunity to try the CMID training database, making it a very worthwhile three hours. CMID provides a standard format for inspection of offshore vessels. Its use helps promote safety and efficiency and can help reduce the number of repeat inspections on individual marine vessels. The eCMID database website enables vessel operators to allow potential clients access to completed CMID reports. The application is available for inspectors to complete and upload their reports in a common and professional format. Further information on CMID is available at: www.imca-int.com/marine-division/cmid.aspx

Sail away of latest Made in Lowestoft offshore structure The latest successful Made in Lowestoft project by Sembmarine SLP, the jacket for the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm offshore substation, has sailed away from its yard. The 1500 tonne structure that has dominated Lowestoft’s port skyline for months was maneuvered out of the harbour on a barge by three tugs. Spectators lined Lowestoft’s South Pier to watch the steel structure, that the town has watched take shape at the UK’s only fabrication yard in the Southern North Sea, pass through the pier heads. Workers completing the substation’s fourdeck topside, due for load-out and sail away in July and August, gathered high on the module to watch the departure of the jacket, its top shrouded in sea mist. The structure, the latest of more than 90 offshore structures delivered on time and safely by the company, bore the banner ‘Designed and built in Lowestoft and delivered on time.’ Sea-going tug Pegasus met the barge just north of Lowestoft at West Holme buoy where it was handed over by Sembmarine SLP to Seaway Heavy Lifting. Pegasus then towed the jacket 100 km to the Dudgeon site 32 km off Cromer, Norfolk, to await the arrival of installation crane vessel, Seaway Heavy Lifting’s Stanislav Yudin from Holland. The jacket will be lifted into place by the anchored Yudin’s crane and sunk into the seabed using suction bucket technology, the first time it has been used on an offshore substation in UK waters. On board the Yudin to supervise its installation will be Sembmarine SLP’s offshore manager Brett Hurrell with staff from suction bucket specialists SPT Offshore. Sembmarine SLP was contracted to work with Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd (STDL) to design and build the offshore substation for wind farm owners Statoil, Statkraft and Masdar. Representatives from Statoil and Siemens were at the sail away.

p12 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

The offshore substation will house all systems needed for the handling and export of power from the 402MW wind farm to the onshore substation at Necton, Norfolk and connects to Dudgeon’s 67 turbines by 12 inter-array cables. Two export cables will take the power to Necton. The wind farm will generate enough electricity to power 410,000 homes. At the sail away, Lowestoft harbour master Gary Horton was on board the barge guiding the vessels out of the harbour. Lead tug was the Multi-Tug 27 with the Avant 20 behind, braking and steering. They were assisted by EMS (Eastern Marine Services) vessels Defender and Surveyor, as guide and transfer vessels. Matthew Wooltorton, Sembmarine SLP’s Project Manager for the offshore substation, said: “There is a total of 6000 tonnes moving away. It is not a quick operation, at a speed of about 4knots, possibly up to 10 knots once at sea.” The team had been planning the sail away for months to meet the strict criteria and ensure a safe and smooth departure, he said. Yesterday was chosen for the perfect weather conditions.

“We are already planning the next sail away in August for the topside and are booking tugs. “It is satisfying to know it is now complete and went out on time and everything has gone smoothly watched by our workforce on the module. “It has been a prominent feature of the Lowestoft skyline for so long.” “It is a little bit sad and now we have an empty space in the yard. Our focus will now be on completing the topside, starting our next project and winning future projects. The jacket is designed to stand in the sea for at least 25 years. Sembmarine SLP hopes its successful delivery, on time and safely, will help it win future offshore wind farm substation projects, including that for the East Anglia ONE farm. “I am really proud of what our team here has achieved on a labour intensive, highly skilled and complex engineering project. The quality of finish and workmanship is excellent, as ever. The care and finish, which has gone into the project, is outstanding. ”

Macduff Marine Surveyors Macduff Ship Design Ltd is excited to announce the launch of Macduff Marine Surveyors, a new branch of the company covering marine survey work. Based at the Macduff offices in the North East of Scotland, Macduff Marine Surveyors will cover both the local area and further afield. During 2014, Macduff Ship Design became aware of the diminishing presence of qualified Marine Surveyors in the North East of Scotland, due to the retirement of both independent surveyors and from established Marine Survey Companies, with no replacements being trained to fill the gap. With this in mind, in 2015 a decision was made to bridge this gap by forming a separate Marine Survey element within Macduff Ship Design Ltd, as the work load is still very much present for this section of the Marine Industry in this part of the country. Macduff Marine Surveyors aims to provide professional and practical Marine Survey functions in the following areas: • Statutory Workboat Coding. • Marine Insurance Damage Cover. • Vessel Valuations for Banks and Financial Institutions. • New Construction Supervision.

• Project Management for Vessel Conversion Work. • Towage Certification for Insurance Companies. • Tonnage Measurement. Equipment levels for survey purposes include the following: • Computer System • Thickness Meters • Noise Meters • General Survey Equipment. During the formation of the company, it was decided to recruit an Engineer or Surveyor with considerable previous experience in the Maritime sector, either offshore or on large sea-going vessels. In late 2015, a suitable candidate was selected to start the process. The Principal Surveyor at the new company is Mr Jim McDonald (MCMS, IEng, I MarEng, MIMarEST). Jim has a long history with the marine industry at sea and as a Marine Superintendent. He undertook an apprenticeship at Southampton and Glasgow Marine Colleges, working his way up through the promotion ladder to obtain a Chief Engineers Ticket (Unlimited). Painting over rust We all know that steel rusts, it’s a fact. In the marine environment rust is a constant problem and one that costs the industry millions of pounds. Whilst paint systems have advanced enormously in recent years, with manufacturers able to offer longer and longer guarantees, the orange coloured stains that are visible on almost every ship; container and offshore platform are evidence that nature is still fighting back. A small British company is leading the battle to take on rust and is using a formula that was invented back in the 1970’s. Neutrarust is technically a ‘Rust Converter’ and was the first of its kind. The inventor wanted not only to find a cure for rust, but also had the foresight to insist that the product be ‘Environmentally Friendly’. So the formulations that were developed all used water based resins and contained nothing that would be harmful to the environment whilst in liquid form and once cured. p14 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

It took 661 experimental formulations before the team reached the ‘Eureka Moment’ and so the product Neutrarust 661 was born. The Royal Navy very quickly saw the benefits of being able to paint directly over rust and in 1982, as their fleet sailed towards the Falklands, 1000’s of litres of Neutrarust were being hastily applied to ‘tidy the ships up’ in readiness for the inevitable new coverage. Neutrarust was a great success and within a few years of being launched was in use all around the world. OK, so how does it work. Rather than go into lengthy explanations about how it works, Simon Mowat, who runs Global Corrosion Solutions Ltd, who have the Worldwide Rights to the original formulation says that “The best way to describe Neutrarust 661 is to describe it as a ‘Rust Tolerant Primer’. He prefers to describe it this way because he sees the product as a great primer for any steel surface.

It’s real ‘belt &braces’. If NR661 is applied to steel, it will kill any rust and act as a primer. As the formulation is water based, it removes any surface moisture during the curing process and creates a seal that will prevent the further ingress of moisture. The adhesive strength is incredible. It’s water based; non toxic; safe to use, store and transport. It is non-flammable and has been passed for use in deep tunnels by London Underground as it does not give off any dangerous fumes when burnt. Seems too good to be true? “I’ve been involved with Neutrarust for around 13 years now. In that time I have sold thousands and thousands of litres of this product, and never had a single complaint that it doesn’t work”, states Simon.

Scania XPI power makes its UK debut at Seawork 2016 Scania’s proven common rail XPI (extra high pressure) fuel-injection technology has arrived in the marine sector with the introduction of the company’s latest V8 engine. Boasting commercial ratings of up to 1,150 horsepower, (846kW), a Scania V8 DI16 power unit featuring XPI will form the centrepiece of Scania’s stand (Q23) at Seawork 2016. Also on display will be a six cylinder, 13 litre DI13 unit. “Scania’s common-rail XPI fuel-injection system has long been used in our engines for trucks and industrial applications, where it has earned a reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency,” says Ray Johnson, General Manager for Scania Engines. “While the fuel quality required for marine applications is different,

filter technology has now reached a level that allows for performance and uptime to be maintained at the high level that we and our customers expect.

Our new V8 engine range is class-leading in terms of its fuel consumption, delivering savings of up to five percent compared to competitive models. It also provides an excellent choice for applications where power and performance are required in a lightweight, compact package. As such, we see typical installations being high speed patrol boats and planning hull vessels. Ray Johnson, General Manager for Scania Engines.

www.scania.com p16 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

While the new V8 range represents an increase in power on the previous generation, the physical size of the complete installation has remained the same making it easy to upgrade an existing V8 installation to the new engine platform. Scania’s modular system in combination with the company’s Engine Management System (EMS) allows for the same platform to be used in different applications. An engine solution can thus be tailored for completely different operating profiles without compromise. Below: The Scania 16 Litre V8.

ROLLS-ROYCE TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE PROPULSION SYSTEM TO YACHT BUILDER BENETTI

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with the Italian yacht builder Benetti to deliver a new generation of high performance, lightweight steerable thruster that makes comprehensive use of carbon fibre material for the first time. Efficient and lightweight propulsion is key to reducing the environmental impact of a modern yacht. We have been working closely with Rolls-Royce on a journey towards an excellent propulsion system for our new line of exclusive megayachts. The successful result of this collaboration has been confirmed by facts, indeed five units have already been sold and more units are already under construction to shorten delivery times and meet the increasing demand for this model.

weight. The new thrusters also facilitate a better vessel lay out while maintaining high propulsion efficiency, excellent manoeuvring capabilities and easy maintenance. Gary Nutter, Rolls-Royce, EVP Propulsion and Engines, said: “This new development has greatly benefitted from the very good cooperation we have had with Azimut Benetti. Their skills as a yacht builder and their engagement with us in creating the perfect vessel is an inspiration.” Designed initially for fast yachts, with further applications in passenger vessels and workboats, the Azipull Carbon brings to the market a lightweight, reliable and highly efficient propulsion system with very low noise and vibration levels.

and fitted with a fixed pitch, pulling type propeller, meaning the propeller faces forward. The driveline is designed with two spiral bevel gear sets, installed in a supporting structure that ensures optimum load carrying capacity in all operating conditions. The thruster can be steered using a hydraulic system. An Automation and Control system, based on Rolls-Royce’s Common Controls building blocks, has also been developed to match the new thrusters, which each weigh only 2,800 kg (dry). The contract covers a number of thrusters, planned for delivery over the next three years and delivered to RINA Rules for Classification of Yachts. The first yacht, a 125 ft Fast Displacement called IRONMAN has already been delivered. Hulls two and three are under construction with delivery expected in the next few months.

The first thruster in the series, AZP C65, is designed for a power rating of 2 MW

Range of Centa diesel engine drive products helps naval architects, marine engineers and engine PO93 designers overcome misalignment for noise-free drives

Visit us on Stand

For the first time at Seawork, Centa Transmissions is showing a complete engine drive that demonstrates how ship and boat builders and repairers can now specify a range of specialised mechanical power transmission components to overcome all types of drive misalignment and also remove drive and structure-borne vibration and noise.. One call to Centa enables you to source flexible couplings, shafts, seals and other components that eliminate all types of drive misalignment in vessels up to 100m length, plus a range of Christie & Grey flexible engine mounts and noise isolators that ensure all structure-borne vibration is removed. You can see all of this come to life on the Centa stand PO93 at Seawork, where a full drive featuring Centa’s noise reduction products will be fitted to a diesel engine mounted on Christie & Grey engine mounts. Centa’s new 1300 electromagnetic clutch will be mounted on the on the engine’s front PTO. From the flywheel, a CENTAX-L coupling connects, via a Twin Disc gearbox fitted with Rotachocks, to a carbon fibre shaft with a new CENTADISC-C coupling and sleeve. The shaft then passes through Centa’s own bulkhead seal to a CENTAFLEXAGM tailshaft coupling. Also fitted is a bilge pump connected by electromagnetic clutch.

All this now makes it very easy to for naval architects, engine designers and marine engineers to specify all types of drive and structural noise reduction components through a single source. Centa Transmissions and Christie & Grey are both leaders in vibration and noise control for the marine industry and their combined experience and product ranges mean that now vessel builders not only have the option to buy a single component

or a complete drive application from Centa, but have access to some of the most experienced engineers in the engine drives market. Pilot 1500 WP 15 Meter Wave Piercing Pilot Boat Baltic Workboats are proud to announce that the first vessel of their new 15 metre aluminium wave piercing platform has successfully been built, tested and handed over to customer, Estonian Pilot Ltd. Now named AHTO-14 , she is the latest of their very own designed wave piercing series with top of the segment seakeeping capability. She has overall length of 14.95 metres and her maximum beam is 4,50 metres. Due to the owner’s request she also has a rescue capability with a hydraulic rescue platform in the aft of the vessel. Therefore special attention was also paid to keep her draft down at only 0,85 metres. Another matter that Baltic Workboats spent a lot of energy on, was to re-design the whole wheelhouse windshield concept to maximise visibility and thereby add safety to pilot’s dangerous working environment. With a crew of 2 and seats for 6 pilots to sit in comfort she is an ideal choice for smaller ports and harbours for all year operations. Noise levels at the wheelhouse is down to 65 dB at full speed with wave piercing hull ensures soft rides even at higher sea states thus reducing the need for an extra foul weather pilot boat.

AHTO-14 is powered by twin Volvo Penta D13MH marine diesel engines, each 368 kW @ 1800 rpm, using ZF 325-1 marine transmissions to propel her maximum speed above 27 knots through a pair of FPP.

use and must be taken out of service.

The ICE-LBG-SR super rotation load ring is one of RUD’s latest innovations which possess an array of innovative designs. Firstly, the double SR ball bearing offers the ultimate solution for turning and flipping at high working load limits without affecting the mounting bolt stability. It enables the load to rotate 360° in all directions under load. The advanced ball bearing technology is arranged in a double way which transfers the forces of the WLL into a rotation movement without jerks which avoids unintentional slackening of the fastening bolt.

Safety is imperative when working at heights and across potentially hazardous working environments. RUD manufacture and supply a range of fall protection anchorage points that provide an ultimate safety factor by permanently attaching to structures where frequent fall protection is required. They are commonly used across the offshore industry for projects such as wind tower installation and maintenance.

RUD ICE Chain is widely used across offshore, arctic offshore and extreme materials handling projects due to its extreme resistance to temperatures operating from -60°c to +300°c. The chain is coated with RUD’s ground breaking pink powder coating which acts as an overheating indicator, which shows the temperatures in which the chain can be safely used. If the chain reaches temperatures of 300°c or above it will turn from a pink colour to brown, then black which shows that the chain is unsafe to

p38 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

Established since 1994, RUD’s VIP grade 10 chains have worked across some of the toughest working environments. Although having the same chain diameter as grade 8 chain the VIP range offers up to 30% increase in the working load limit. The chain also offers a remarkable resistance to temperatures operating from -40°c to +200°c whilst offering 100% working load limit at this temperature.

The WBPG 85-200 tonne hoist ring is popular across the offshore and heavy lift sectors due to its impressive heavy lift capabilities. The WBPG is loadable from any side in the direction of the pivot meaning it is suitable for a variety of heavy lift applications. RUD are well known in the industry for their robust hoist chains which can be supplied to suit a variety of project sizes from 3 x 9 mm up to 32 x 90 mm. The advantages of RUD hoist chain is impressive, offering an extremely high resistance to wear due to its robust surface and depth hardness resulting in a long service life. The hoist chain conforms to EN818-7. type T for manual hoists and

type DAT and DT case hardened chain for powered hoists. The chain is calibrated and precision made to be compatible with the drive wheels of manufacturer’s hoists. As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lifting and lashing applications combined with their extensive range of products and knowledge in the market, RUD are continually innovating and developing their extensive product range to stay at the forefront of their customers’ demands.

Acoustic Devices Help Researchers and Marine Scientists Attempting to relocate underwater objects in open ocean or a low visibility environment can be a difficult and time consuming task. Acoustic pingers and transponders solve this problem. These acoustic beacons are attached to an underwater site or instrument package and transmit a sonar signal. A gun-like device, either carried by a diver or deployed from a boat, detects the signal and guides the operator directly to the beacon. Today these acoustic devices are being employed by many marine scientists and researchers to keep track of expensive oceanographic equipment allowing instruments to be quickly relocated and retrieved. Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is one of the oldest and largest facilities in the world for ocean science research. A department of the University of California in San Diego, SIO’s mission is; “To seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment.” Dr. Ana Sirovic, an assistant researcher at SIO’s Marine Bioacoustic Lab, studies the effects of ocean noise

on marine life. On a research project in the Cayman Islands studying the spawning behavior of the Nassau grouper, Dr. Sirovic deployed an array of hydrophones to listen to the sounds of the underwater environment. To ensure the hydrophones could be easily relocated, their position was marked with a JW Fishers SFP-1 acoustic pinger. “In addition to marking the location, the pinger was also useful in synchronizing the clocks on the array hydrophones” reports Dr. Sirovic. The Naval Engineering and Test Establishment (NETE) located in Lasalle, Quebec is the Royal Canadian Navy’s principal test and evaluation center. NETE is a government owned contractor operated (GOCO) organization providing a broad range of multidisciplinary services directed at naval equipment, combat, and control systems. Their mission is to provide independent and expert testing and evaluation of naval material supplied to the Canadian Forces. To assist in these operations NETE is using several of Fishers MLFP-1 low frequency pingers. The primary advantage of these pingers is their low frequency acoustic signal can be detected at a distance of 5-10 kilometers. This is a very important feature when deploying mobile equipment in open ocean where the ultimate location may be unknown, and retrieval is essential.

The Prince William Sound Science Center is an independent, non-profit research and education organization based in Cordova, Alaska, an area that has been called “Home of the world’s richest waters”. Changes in the ocean environment, such as fluctuations in water temperature, salinity, turbidity, and biochemical dynamics, can have a significant impact on the availability nutrients for marine life. Scientists monitor these environmental indicators to determine when changes occur and why. Researchers are also monitoring the area affected by the Exxon Valdez oil spill to assess how well the ecosystem is recovering and the accident’s long term effects. The center’s scientists are using a variety of instruments to gather data including the autonomous moored profiler which travels on a cable between the surface and the seafloor taking measurements. Another key device is the CTD probe which is deployed from a surface vessel and lowered on a cable to the bottom. The probe measures the seawater’s conductivity and temperature at various depths. To ensure their oceanographic instruments can be safely recovered, the center has acquired a SFP-1 acoustic pinger.

A WORK BOAT THAT DOES IT ALL Liverpool Water Witch are UK based builders of multi-purposes workboats for waterway maintenance, aquatic weed control, and marine pollution control duties. Since 1966 the family owned company has been manufacturing trash and debris collection boats to clean up harbours and waterways, from rivers and lakes, to busy commercial ports and prestigious waterfront developments. Designed for easy shipment and road transportable, Water Witch vessels are working to keep the maritime environment beautiful, healthy and safe in every corner of the world.

Marine debris causes serious economic, social, aesthetic and environmental damage. It is one of the most serious environmental problems facing our oceans and waterways. Plastics such as bottles, bags, sytrofoam and other containers are not only an eyesore, they have a very serious and harmful impact on wildlife, marine habitats and human safety. Water Witch vessels offer a proven effective tool in the fight against marine debris, offering a safe and reliable clean-up system. The boats

p44 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

offer the ability to pick up all types and sizes of floating and submerged debris and also tackles other waterway management issues such as invasive aquatic vegetation.

About Us: Millions of tons of trash reach the marine environment every year. Marine debris originates in many sources including storm water run off, littering, water reclamation plants and abdondoned fishing gear.

Jackie Caddick, Director of Water Witch.

The nature of marine debris has changed over the last 30 years because of the huge increase in the use of synthetic materials such as plastic. Plastic degrades slowly in water. As a result of it’s durability and increasing usage of single use plastics, the quantity of marine debris is significantly increasing over time. The accumulation and wide dispersal of plastics in our marine environment is a global concern.

The 7m aluminium workboat as shown features a removable collection basket which efficiently collects debris and vegetation and works and is highly manoeuvrable for working in hard to reach areas. It can additionally be used for a variety of waterway maintenance duties due to it’s flexible design and removable deck plates to provide an stable work platform. A unique drop in ‘pod’ system supports various operating configurations, from oil spill recovery to mobile pump out. Additional options include a 1500kg capacity A frame to service moorings. It is powered by a Yamaha 25hp high thrust four stroke engine, designed for powering displacement workboats and can be towed on the road using a custom trailer. POLLUTION CONTROL & CLEAN UP

Has you port got adequate oil pollution equipment for tier 1 or tier 2 response oil spill equipment? Between 2010 to 2015, there were 42 oil spills of which more than 6 tonnes of spilled oil occurred globally. In this period there was also a total loss of 330,000 tonnes of oil of which 86% happened within the first 10 spills (info from ITOPH). After any major oil spill, port marinas/terminals always take stock of oil spill equipment ensuring everything works as it should. A short while ago, Zwanny Ltd visited a UK port where a disc skimmer was incorrectly stored. The pump and power supply was missing, leaving them with an ineffective skimmer. Had an oil spill happened at their port as in the case of the mentioned oil spills above, there would have been a lot of people left with egg on their faces in the mishap of not having the correct oil pollution equipment to hand.

As part of the Zwanny Ltd service, we can advise customers on the correct oil spill equipment to deal with the tier levels that your port/marina is required as well as supplying you with any missing or upgrading of equipment. Zwanny Ltd is a tier 1 distributor of 3 manufactures who manufacture in E.U. and U.S. oil spill equipment Zwanny supply their equipment not just in The UK and Ireland but world wide. Tier 1 level is purely based on local stock levels and this also depends on how far the boundaries of a tier level are drawn out for each port, or terminal. Tier 1 in most cases would consists of absorbent booms and smaller booms and a possible skimmer, as for tier 2, this is based on a more regional level with the use of absorbents, booms, skimmers and a possible tank for the recovered oil. Tier 3 is everything included with the disposal of oil from a site. At Zwanny, we look at these levels of tiers and can supply absorbents, booms, skimmers, tanks and we work with a number of companies for waste removal from a location. On this note, Zwanny Ltd have got a great number of new products which can be supplied to your organisation: In the aborbents sector, there are stocks of marine absorbent booms (100% UK

manufactured with at least 60% recycled polypropylene), as well as the Multiwick which is absorbent and comes in a box that can be used as a pad, sock or folded into a pillow. As the UK distributor of Weir skimmers from Foilex, the skimmers are able to be stored as either tier 1 or tier 2 packages and are portable enough to fit in the boot of a car (approx. 10m/hr of oil depending on product type). Zwanny Ltd can also provide larger skimmer products which are used on a global scale. Zwanny Ltd can also supply booms from a sourced Dutch manufacturer near Rotterdam which also includes both inflatable or noninflatable booms for coastal areas to help with the containment of oil in near shore and offshore applications. Call Zwanny Ltd to discuss any oil pollution products you may need replacing or upgrading, or to hear about our new magnetic boom slider unit for any boom connection. Diversity lands steady performance at Aberdeen Harbour Activity at Aberdeen Harbour remained steady throughout 2015 resulting in the port recording a 9.7% increase in turnover, up from £28.9million in 2014 to £31.7million in 2015. Pre-tax profit was also up by 21% at £15.03million, compared to £12.4million the previous year. A 6% drop in vessel numbers, from 7,937 to 7,428 is consistent with the trend for newer, larger multi-purpose vessels using the port, which is evidenced by the marginal drop in overall vessel tonnage at 27.5million tonnes, down only 2.1% from 28.1million tonnes in 2014. Aberdeen Harbour Chief Executive, Colin Parker said:

The region has seen considerable change over the last 12 months and the repercussions of this have also had an impact on the Harbour. While the high levels of traffic we have experienced as a result of the North Sea oil and gas sector has slowed, we are witnessing growth in other areas, which only goes to demonstrate the diversity of traffic using the port. In 2015 the port handled its largest ever grain shipment at 16,500 tonnes.

p46 | www.dockyard-mag.com | June 2016

This figure in itself is greater than the overall tonnage of grain shipped in 2013 and has given rise to an average of 70,000 tonnes of grain shipped per year throughout 2014 and 2015. Aberdeen Harbour welcomed traffic from 39 countries throughout 2015, which included new links with Indonesia and Libya. Regular routes to the Northern Isles remained strong, with the Serco Northlink passenger and freight services to Orkney and Shetland contributing to a 2.9% increase in passenger numbers to 158,226 from 153,756 the year before.

In 2015, we welcomed vessels from new routes, extending our reach and connecting Aberdeen with a wider global audience. We also continue to see a trend for larger vessels across all sectors. In March of this year, the HHL Rio de Janerio became the longest vessel to call into port, at 168.5metres. The biggest single vessel tonnage was also recorded in 2015 at 20,643 tonnes. This is a key driver for the potential expansion of Aberdeen Harbour into Nigg Bay, particularly as we see increased investment in decommissioning activity and growing interest from the cruise ship industry.

We have had great focus in 2015 on maintaining our cost base, which has allowed the rate increases applied in the last 12 months to be converted directly into profit – thereby contributing significantly to the revenue and borrowing capabilities required to support these expansion plans. The proposed deep water quays at Nigg Bay would complement the existing capabilities, experience and established suite of service providers, already in place at the current Harbour, while opening up the port to new market potential. Although the possible expansion of Aberdeen Harbour into Nigg Bay is still a feasibility study, the three main elements of the required planning consent application, a Harbour Revision Order, Marine Licenses and Planning Permission in Principle have been submitted. A final decision on the project is expected this autumn. “This is a critical time for Aberdeen and its future,” continues Mr. Parker. “The timing of the development gives us a great opportunity to build on our current traffic flows, anchor decommissioning activity in the North East of Scotland and continue to build on our strong international links.”

Introducing ‘The PartnerShip’ a global initiative to create awareness of the shipping industry by building, educating and fundraising via a virtual online ship The PartnerShip is an innovative concept based around the creation of a virtual online ship, over a two year project build cycle. The concept allows the major merchant ship types to be combined as a unique generic design providing the perfect platform to showcase the vast array of equipment, systems and services that allow today’s merchant fleet to operate. The project is distinctive in that it focuses on the key element in the industry, the ship, and in providing maritime businesses with a unique opportunity to satisfy their CSR, educational and marketing needs all in one. Building The PartnerShip has a common goal to build relationships inside and outside the shipping industry. We have created an opportunity for collective working to raise the profile of the industry, the ship, its related components and services in both an engaging and highly visible way Educating During the two-year project cycle, The PartnerShip will continuously develop providing a practical online tool for educating the next generation on what a ship is, what equipment and components

are required, and what services are available to enable the ship to operate effectively. Fundraising Through the exclusive sponsorship of each component or service, participation in project events from launch to delivery, special fundraising events and through individual donations, The PartnerShip is seeking to raise £1million to support a variety of good causes. Companies have the opportunity to become the exclusive provider of an item of equipment or a service for the ‘virtual ship’ and all benefactors can choose which charities benefit from their generosity.

I have long believed that the shipping industry is undersold in the world of big business. It has so much more to offer and with new technologies to the fore, we need a collective approach and an innovative

vehicle to embrace the future generation and improve the overall industry image. The Partnership is an opportunity for us to share our collective abilities and achieve the vision of a collaborative approach supporting the future success of our industry. Mike Porter, Director of Podium 4 and Founder of The PartnerShip. Andy Ford, GM Marketing, Europe & Africa, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions added When we were approached with this innovative concept we had no hesitation in supporting it as a project partner by offering our design services and as an exclusive sponsor as it ticks all the right boxes for us. We urge our industry colleagues to come together and collectively support the PartnerShip to build, educate and fundraise and to help achieve its worthy objectives.”

ARMITT GROUP IN ADVANCE STAGE NEGOTIATIONS TO BUILD FACILITY AT LONDON THAMESPORT The Armitt Group, a respected UK shipping agent and specialist logistics company, has signed a heads of terms agreement to build a 120,000 ft.² multimodal terminal at London Thamesport. Freight could start moving through the new facility as early as autumn this year. The long term agreement was signed by The Armitt Group, and the port’s owners Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group. Construction of the site and warehouse will start in early May with shipments due to begin later this year. Armitt Multimodal Terminal South, as it will be known, is the first in a three stage investment by the Armitt Group to develop similar facilities in the Midlands and North of the UK within the next three years. The company already offers vessel agency, chartering services and bunker supplies throughout the UK, including Thamesport. Armitt also has plans to handle additional breakbulk cargo from the port and is currently in talks with Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group to secure an additional area to handle shipments of aggregates for consumption within the M25. Apart from providing professional logistics

Above: Artist impression of the new warehouse. services to the steel industry, Liverpool based Armitt Group also provides shipbroking, chartering and vessel agency services nationwide. It has grown over the years to become a global supplier of marine fuels and lubricants and is one of the most successful and trusted logistics providers in the UK. Thamesport was chosen by Armitt because of its deep water berths as well as its excellent road and rail communication links to high population areas in the south east and unrivalled access along the corridor to the North West. The port has, in the past, handled up to seven train loads of containers, each way, per day. Armitt is confident that in time, it can move up to two million tonnes of high quality steel products through its warehouse per year, by attracting up to 50 deep sea handy size vessels and up to 100 short sea port calls a year to the facility.

What we are bringing to Thamesport, through this agreement, is our expertise in breakbulk handling, which is why Hutchison finds us attractive as a partner. We see this deal as being the start of a very long term successful relationship with Hutchison Ports. We also see the deal as a great opportunity to open up a new supply chain corridor to service European and Far Eastern markets, and it is a crucial link in our plans to develop a fully integrated supply chain across the UK. The investment also ensures we have access to an excellent deep water, rail connected and uncongested facility that is important to the needs of our clients. Nicholas Marshall, Commercial Director at Armitt.

Bernhard Schulte and BSM to tackle 24 Peaks Challenge for Seafarers UK Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), will be joining their parent company, Bernhard Schulte, to participate in this year’s 24 Peaks Challenge for Seafarers UK. The Schulte Group will be entering six teams, comprising a total of 30 participants from sea and shore-based personnel. This demanding challenge will take place on 2nd and 3rd July, with teams climbing 24 peaks across the Lake District, covering a distance of 31 miles in just a 24 hour period. This is the third consecutive year that the Schulte Group is participating in the Seafarers UK 24 Peaks Challenge. A wide mix of personnel from across all shipmanagement and crew service centres, including the Bernhard Schulte CEO, Mr Ian Beveridge, as well as seafarers across the BSM managed fleet will be taking part.
