SUBSEA INNOVATION BEGIN WORK ON NEW DARLINGTON HEADQUARTERS Subsea Innovation, one of the world’s leading subsea equipment suppliers, has officially started work on its new headquarters, which will potentially help secure larger contracts and create more jobs in the North East of England. The Darlington based company is building a new factory and office space after its expanding operations outgrew the capacity of its existing Faverdale North site. The construction work is being carried out by local contractors J and RM Richardson and was designed by Darlington’s Architects Design Group. The new development will be double the size of Subsea’s current base and opens up the potential to double its workforce to

more than 70. It will also enable the company to handle larger demands from the oil, gas and renewable energy industries. Once finished the Darlington headquarters will cover 40,000sq ft and is expected to be completed in August. Subsea Innovation’s annual turnover exceeded £10m for the first time in its history in 2013, up from £7.5m in 2012. The company designs and manufactures offshore equipment handling systems, pipeline repair systems and subsea sealing systems. Martin Moon, Managing Director at Subsea Innovation, said: “The new building will allow us to build bigger machines and carry out increased testing, so we don’t have to use external facilities. The fact the new facility will have extra height means we can install larger cranage and it will also allow us to develop the research and development side further too. I always envisaged the company would double in size, and by increasing it means we can look at larger work. Last year, I believe we would have got a big A-Frame order from a client if we had a bigger facility, so this move is a very positive one. We wanted to stay in the region and looked at other places, but Darlington had everything to keep us local. You have to be flexible and ready to move rapidly in this industry, and such an investment will allow us to do that and strengthen our future. It is all about getting your customers and keeping them for life.”

Sparrows Group Sparrows Baricon, the Aberdeen-based designer, manufacturer and leaser of subsea pipe and cable tensioners, has invested £4m in the development and manufacture of new products which respond to evolving demand in the sector. “The growing demand is for touch-screen controlled, electrically powered tensioners, as distinct from the traditional hydraulically operated units,” says Alan Saynor, Business Manager with Sparrows Baricon. The new electric models incorporate industryleading Siemens control systems. Sparrows Baricon has recently shipped its first electrically powered 10 and 15 tonne tensioners and the first of the company’s newest design, a 50 tonne 4-track tensioner, joins the Sparrows Baricon rental fleet in Q2 2014. As part of the 50 tonne tensioner programme, the company is also building a new 150 tonne line pull test bed.
By the second quarter, Sparrows Baricon will have 10 tensioners from 3 to 50 tonne in its rental fleet. By operating units in series, this gives the capability to deliver up to 86 tonne line pull at only 35 tonne squeeze per track per metre. In addition to manufacturing these units for hire with Sparrows Baricon operators, the company also manufactures tensioners and other lay-spread equipment for sale to clients.

£4M INVESTMENT RENEWS SPARROWS BARICON COMMITMENT TO THE TENSIONER MARKET
“With these design developments and fleet additions, Sparrows Baricon has confirmed its commitment to the tensioner market. We are working on further product developments for the sub-sea sector which we plan launch during 2014,” concludes Alan Saynor.
“The industry is calling for greater capacity and greater control – both of speed and crush-force exerted on sensitive product,” says Alan Saynor. “These new tensioners from Sparrows Baricon deliver both.” In parallel with the development of the new 10, 15 and 50 tonne tensioners, Sparrows Baricon has also introduced design enhancements to its existing 3, 5 and 36 tonne designs, and has completely refurbished its entire rental fleet.

PWA-PROSEP AGREES DEAL TO PROVIDE NOC WITH DESALTING TECHNOLOGY POTENTIAL TO SAVE MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF FRESH WATER PER YEAR Houston headquartered oil, gas and water treatment specialist, PWA-ProSep today announced it was awarded a contract for the supply of one of its patented ProSalt™ units, valued at $352,000 to a major National Oil Company in the Arab Gulf region. The 20” ProSalt wash water injection and mixing valve will be installed at an onshore facility upstream of the Desalter vessel. The ProSalt unit will replace the existing globe valve and static mixer, with delivery expected by end of Q2 2014. Results from a similar existing installation with the NOC, found that the ProSalt technology can save more than 10 million gallons of fresh water per year in one facility alone.
Traditional mixing valves often consume large quantities of wash water and chemicals. The ProSalt unit helps to preserve valuable water supplies. The robust, flanged spool piece replaces the conventional static mixer and mixing valve with a novel inline injection and mixing assembly. It requires minimum maintenance, has a high turndown ratio, and provides unobstructed flow conditions while providing efficient mixing of various production chemicals and dilution water used in the desalting process.

RAISING THE BAR FOR DRILLING RISERS
As an industry leader in riser provision, Claxton is accustomed to designing and providing product and service solutions for these critical systems within very tight deadlines. Darren Bowyer, Product Leader: Risers, at Claxton, explains, “sometimes, clients find it difficult to predict exactly when they will need a particular piece of equipment. Rig schedules can be very fluid and many factors influence the management of drilling teams. As a result, clients often give us short notice of their riser needs. For example, in April we started work on a riser system that had to be ready for client operations in November, but this is about half the time it normally takes to construct a riser of this kind.”
than any other supplier. In addition, our ancillary items for riser handling, installation and tensioning have all been developed through years of experience and all with the aim of providing safe and efficient systems that reduce critical path rig time. So clients can be sure we are offering the best fit riser for their drilling campaign, not just a system we want to push.” A key aspect of the Claxton approach to customer service is anticipating trends and market needs, meaning that the company is often working on solutions before clients ask for them.
Claxton responds to changing client needs by offering flexible commercial options. “We can provide risers on sale or rental terms to suit client projects and experienced crews to run the system offshore if necessary,” says Bowyer. “Being fully independent means that we focus on what the client actually needs and recommend the most effective solution. As part of the Acteon group of companies, we can draw on support from specialist sister companies such as 2H Offshore and Subsea Riser Products for access to combined levels of riser knowledge and expertise that no one else can match.”
News & Products
The oil and gas industry innovates to exploit hydrocarbon resources in harsh environments or locations where access is difficult. In recent years, the focus of these operational challenges has been on dealing with higher operating pressures and deeper water. A key aspect to overcoming these is having access to well-designed and reliable drilling riser system that is effectively tailored to your drilling campaign, rig interfaces and operating pressures.
Claxton, out in the field
How does Claxton cope with these extreme time pressures? There are options for compressing a construction schedule, as Bowyer says, “At Claxton, we can accommodate tight schedules by refining our processes and reducing or eliminating non-essential, timeconsuming elements. For example, we recently started supplying ring-type bolt tensioners which reduce flange makeup times considerably. Additionally we also supply joints pre-studded, further enhancing offshore operations.”
www.sosmagazine.biz
That Claxton holds one of the largest drilling riser stock inventories in the UK, with API NACE compliant systems up to 12,200 psi and a full inventory of supporting equipment, helps its fast response. “This is a real bonus for clients,” says Bowyer, “We have more pressure options, connection types and overall complete system options in-house

The company joined forces with North East Scotland College two years ago by launching its modern apprenticeship scheme. It is aimed at helping to address the skills shortages in the industry whilst providing a defined development path for individuals looking to follow an engineering career.
Paul Sherrington, depute principal North East Scotland, said: “It has always been very clear that one of our main aims is to provide relevant training designed to allow individuals to develop sustainable careers, and the Modern Apprenticeship programme meets that purpose. We are the second largest training provider for apprentices in Scotland and we want that to grow. In total we have 460 apprenticeships across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. In Fraserburgh alone we have 298 current Modern Apprenticeships with 87 awarded this year.” The Ian Corney award was set up in memory of the former college student who passed away earlier this year. He attended Banff and Buchan College at an early stage of his career before going on to establish his own business and entering the oil and gas industry. Power Jacks’ market activity spans more than 5,000 clients in more than 60 countries and across a diverse range of industries with its high-profile portfolio of clients include blue chip companies Airbus, BAE, Cadbury, Diageo, Ferrari & Red Bull Racing, Glaxo, ICI, Rolls Royce, Unilever. Over the last 20 years, the company has also trained more than 50 apprentices in mechanical and machinery disciplines ranging from assembly to electrical. It is the only company in the UK and one of only around six in the world which boasts a thread grinding capability for manufacturing planetary roller screws. These products provide a cleaner, quieter and more environmentally-friendly mechanical alternative to hydraulic solutions. One particular application is on Suspension Parameter Measurement Machines and as a result, Power Jacks products have been exported to Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsibushi, & Chrysler.

TECHNIP’S ANTI H2S LAYER AIMING TO SOLVE AGE OLD FLEXIBLE PIPE PROBLEM For almost 40 years, flexible pipes have been used for oil and gas transportation. One of the main benefits of the flexible pipe concept is that, through a clever assembly of steel and polymer layer, the structural layers of the pipes are not in direct contact with the transported fluid. This is of great interest, especially for highly demanding applications such as high pressure, deep water or highly corrosive fluid transportation.
material efficiency and to understand the physical and chemical mechanisms responsible for the neutralization of hydrogen sulfide. In addition to laboratory tests in diverse conditions of pressure, temperature and gas mixture, two 4.8’’ flexible pipe demonstrative structures with an Anti-H2S layer have been produced at Technip’s flexible pipe manufacturing plant in Le Trait, France.
These structures have been used to perform full scale testing representative of highly demanding operating conditions. The testing gas which contains methane mixed with 1.5% H2S and 5% CO2, was pressurized at 200 bar. The most obvious advantage of having an Anti-H2S layer in a flexible pipe is the reduction of weight of the final product. Indeed, as it is now possible to
However, over a long period of time, active components such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are able to permeate through the polymer pressure sheath and reach the annulus –the space between the pressure sheath and the external sheath – where the structural layers are present. This permeation phenomenon is taken into account by selecting specific steel grades resistant to hydrogen induced corrosion. Unfortunately, these corrosive resistant steel grades often exhibit lower mechanical performances than the steel grades that could be used in the absence of H2S.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Technip, in collaboration with IFP Energies nouvelles has decided to push the flexible pipe concept further by patenting and developing a new polymer layer which is able to prevent hydrogen sulfide from reaching the annulus, even over period of time for as long as the flexible pipe operating life. This layer is called the ‘Anti-H2S layer’.
16
A composite material, made of a thermoplastic matrix compounded with metallic oxide, is constitutive of the Anti-H2S layer. The metallic oxide will be responsible for the neutralization of the corrosive component before it reaches the steel annulus. This scavenger process allows the use of sweet service steel grades with high mechanical performances, even when the hydrogen sulfide is present in the transported fluid. Extensive testing work has been performed in order to demonstrate the

use steel grades with higher mechanical performances, the section of each layer, and consequently the total amount of steel required to sustain a given load is reduced.
Reducing the weight of the flexible pipe can also be an advantage when considering installation of the lines because lighter pipes are easier to install. The buoyancy needs can also be reduced, again facilitating the installation process and decreasing the installation time. While the challenges to be tackled by the flexible pipe industry are continuously increasing, Technip is constantly innovating to bring solutions to its clients, demonstrated through a new technology able to neutralize hydrogen sulfide during the entire service life of its product. The new layer, called Anti-H2S, enables a more reliable and more optimized flexible pipe design. Technip’s Anti H2S Layer has been nominated for the Innovation & Technology Award at the 2014 Subsea UK Business Awards with the winners due to be announced on the 5th February.

THE ILLUMINATED DIVER UMBILICAL ‘LIGHTPATH’ A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ADVANCE FROM PHOTOSYNERGY LTD The concept: To see the entire route of a dive umbilical has been identified as a significant contribution to safety. PSL have achieved this with a unique side emitting 5mm diameter fibre that carries no electrical power, only light up to 150m in length. The fibre is spirally wound into the umbilical thereby creating a flexible continuous line of light from a low power LED light source which can be either steady state or flashing. The initial testing and evaluation took place at The Underwater Centre in Scotland, their Open Days contributed significantly in raising the profile of the illuminated umbilical concept Operational experience with LIGHTPATH has been gained in the North Sea through collaboration, support and advice from Bibby Offshore, Helix Well Ops UK Ltd and Boskalis Offshore Subsea Services operating in both Saturation and Wet Bell systems. The positive feed-back provided and photographic evidence of performance supports LIGHTPATH as an innovation that helps de-risk diving operations; a major industry concern. LIGHTPATH enhances safety for all parties operating in the subsea environment. This has been proven for the individual diver, his colleagues in the water and the bell-man. ROV pilots are aware of the route of the umbilical which minimises the risk of collision and helps detect cases of dive umbilicals snagging on structures. LIGHTPATH can be used to identify the individual diver through choice of light output colour, Green/Blue/White.
The PSL SLS9000 Light Source wavelength for the human eye, and provides extraordinary output from minimum power, typically <7W, target life of 5years continuous operational use and projected maintenance free life. Subsea professionals have identified a number of applications including the lighting of tool boxes, tether lines and restraint systems including the golden gate. ROV pilots highlighted the lighting of manifold valves, control panels and docking
LIGHTPATH side emitting 5mm diameter flexible fibre rope injected from a single source LED supplies a continuous line of light typically 70m in length with the fibre simply wound into the lay of the umbilical. The SLS5000 unit operates over the 12 to 24V DC range with an optional non-penetrating on/off/flash switch.

or garage guidance systems. Salvage divers identified guide routes into wrecks utilising a continuous line of light and marine archaeologists are looking at controlled site access and ‘grid location’. For non-submerged operation PSL have developed a 4th colour system, Red. Marine applications to enhance operational safety on deck include guard rails, open hatches, temporary work areas and below deck identifying egress routes. Offshore Wind safety applications identified as tower access lighting and ship personnel transfer systems; PSL are working with SE Offshore Wind Expert Support programme and BVG Associates. PSL will continue to develop and promote equipment that will contribute to enhancing the safety of those in the marine, offshore, dive and subsea community with the continued support of operators.
The LIGHTPATH is a real step forward in the ability for better diver umbilical management & safety. The ROVs have also commented on how much easier it is to see the Diver’s umbilical. What is really noticeably is the way the umbilical stands out when the ROV is moving around. This has got to be a major safety feature. If it wasn’t for the light string, you wouldn’t know the umbilical was there.

‘We were delighted to be able to provide PSL with the opportunity to test their illuminated rope in the controlled environment of our pier, using divers in training. Our onshore tank, which has viewing panels on all sides, also provided the perfect location for a demonstration of how the light rope works, to potential clients. It’s a very important piece of new technology, which we can see has significant benefits to commercial divers, and ROV pilot techs, when working offshore or in poor light.’ General Manager, Steve Ham

Very nice system could be a bit brighter but for the rest excellent and helps to improve safety. Our customer made a special note on the final audit report, the note was (a good way to improve the safety of the diver under water better visible umbilical) they are even recommending using the SLS 9000 unit.

In low viz situations, it’s a real safety bonus when the divers can, at a glance see the direction their umbilicals are going. We are continuously doing SIMOPS with work class ROVs & the ROV pilots have commented on how much easier it is manoeuvre around the divers umbilicals now that they are (the umbilicals) illuminated. The umbilical really did light up really well; with the divers able to follow the umbilical all the way back to the bell. I believe this
On the Bibby Offshore DSVs we use different colours for each diver so there is no confusion when the divers are working close together in poor light conditions. The main benefit is that the divers can readily identify where their umbilicals are at any time, preventing potential problems with unseen snagging hazards. The ROV can also quickly check the divers’ umbilcals are completely clear before landing large items on the seabed. The divers themselves started requesting umbilical lighting quickly following the early offshore trials. This, in itself, speaks volumes. Nigel Kenrick Diving & Dive Systems Operations Manager

NEW DYNAMIC VERIFICATION SCHEME DASHBOARD DEVELOPED DNV GL has developed a highly graphical, web-database-driven Verification Scheme Dashboard (VSD) to clearly show the offshore risks identified by verification findings and ultimately how they are managed to reduce major accident risks. The company offers the VSD to its customers as part of its independent verification service.
Each finding associated with an SCE can be ‘mapped’ to a specific location on the installation, as shown on the relevant plot plan. This display allows the Duty Holder to see for the first time, the potential cumulative effect of these ‘degraded’ SCEs.
(Safety Case) Regulations 2005, it can also be used worldwide as a means of verifying and demonstrating the safe operation of any offshore fixed or floating installation. The introduction of the new European Union Offshore Safety Directive introduces mandatory requirements for independent verification across Europe, and will increase the demand for an easily managed verification scheme and reporting system such as this one.
The high-level VSD gives a ‘live’ summary of all the findings where action is required of the Duty Holder. The dashboard shows a list of all Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) and the number of findings relating to each SCE. The SCEs are also grouped into barrier types to allow the cumulative risk from related findings to be visible. The tool, will be easily expandable to cover the requirements of environmental critical elements as required by the new Offshore Safety Directive in Europe.
Detailed information relating to any of the findings, including customer information, e.g., Performance Standards, Planned Maintenance Routines (PMRs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), etc, can be viewed by clicking on the category
The overall objective of the verification scheme is to establish a system of independent and competent scrutiny of safety-critical elements throughout the lifecycle of an installation, and to confirm that applicable performance standards are
Current solutions for handling these findings within a Duty Holder’s own Action Tracking System typically do not make the findings highly visible or provide a useful overview of the findings. Further, it is often not possible to provide a meaningful analysis so that the risk profile

Atlantas Marine Ltd V8 SII COMPLETES SECOND SUCCESSFUL YEAR IN VIETNAM CURRENTS.
The V8 range are an intelligent new breed of ROVs. Built on the six degrees of freedom concept developed by Ocean Modules’ founders in the 1980s; the V8’s centre of Buoyancy/ Gravity is in the centre and the vehicles stability is controlled by an Advanced Control System. The ROV can automatically compensate for and correct outside forces such as tether drag and current as well as move in any direction and at any angle. Incredible manoeuvrability and unmatched stability enabled the V8 to perform a wide span of services around the rig including precision manipulation tasks, surveying gas and oil pipelines, drill string monitoring, bubble watch, scour monitoring and debris clearance. The stability offered by the V8 provided a superb platform for cameras, sonar and other sensors mounted on the vehicle
The V8 proved perfect for constant mobilisation. Rig operators benefited from the vehicle’s innate reliability, wide ranging capability and compact package size - which made it particularly easy to relocate for working from different areas around the rig.
Subsea
Atlantas Marine are celebrating a successful second year of operations in Offshore Vietnam using the innovative Ocean Modules V8 Sii ROV. The underwater inspection specialist supplied the V8 to provide ROV support for drilling operations in the challenging high current conditions.
The V8’s ability to pitch and roll 360° in any orientation reduced inspection time and allowed the vehicle to reach places others couldn’t, whilst the advanced control system and automatic modes reduced the workload on the ROV operator, reducing fatigue and allowing them to concentrate on the job. This has meant that Atlantas Marine have been able to carry out accurate inspections faster and with a team of just 2 operators. “Ocean Modules ROV systems were already proven for inspection and intervention work off the West coast of Australia, central Africa, Russia’s East coast and the North Sea but the conditions in Vietnam presented a new challenge, and one we are delighted to say the V8 Sii more than met” said Atlantas Marine MD Charlie
Foll “We are looking forward to more success stories in 2014 and beyond”.

IMENCO SUBSEA CAMERAS TOP INDEPENDENT TRIAL RESULTS Subsea
One of the world’s largest manufacturers of ROVs recently ran a series of independent trials comparing subsea cameras from seven different manufacturers to establish what would be the best cameras to fit to their future fleet of ROVs. Of the seven manufacturers whose products were tested against a variety of criteria, Imenco’s subsea Bull Shark HD-SDi camera, and Hammerhead Shark SD Colour Zoom camera came out top of the scorecard result tables. Stuart McConnell, General Manager of Imenco UK Ltd said; “This is a great result for Imenco. We have consistently promoted the quality of our camera range to the market since opening the UK office in 2010. An independent test by such a world leading organisation, proving our products to be overall ‘top of class’, can only help our future sales activities and get us into the forefront of specifiers and buyers minds”.
Mr McConnell went on to say “The Company have also created a specific adapter so that the Tiger Shark Digital Stills camera can be used on all their ROVs”. The seven manufacturers tested were: Imenco, Kongsberg, Bowtech, Insite Pacific, Sidus, ROS and SubC Imaging. Tests covered colour accuracy, perceived sharpness of the camera image, image distortion, and signal to noise ratio. Imenco’s Shark Range includes HD-SDi, Low-Light, Wide Angle, Digital Stills and Zoom cameras rated from 500msw to 6000msw dependent on the chosen housing and the job the camera has to do for the customer. The company is launching several new mechanical and electronic products to market over the coming six months. Electronic NPD includes delivery of the Thresher Shark, the sectors smallest HD-SDi, Wide Angle, 6000msw rated camera, the launch of the Sea LED 300 floodlight, and what the market is already calling the ‘game-changing’ SMART Camera and data acquisition Platform. www.sosmagazine.biz

HATLAPA - TRIPLEX OFFSHORE DECK MACHINERY PACKAGE CATERS TO YOUR NEEDS The demand for more comprehensive and extensive machinery packages has increased over the years within the marine industry. In order to respond to this demand, the marine equipment manufacturer Hatlapa and its daughter company Triplex AS have created a deck machinery package aimed specifically at vessels which operate in the demanding conditions in the offshore industry. Hatlapa is known for its high quality and reliable marine equipment in all areas of shipbuilding and now together with Triplex, the two companies are able to offer specific solutions which combine the expertise within the companies. The two companies worked together already prior to the purchase of Triplex in 2011. The history of the two companies extends back to 1990s and a cooperation of supplying winches and net handling systems to the Chilean fishing industry. The compatibility of the two companies is even more evident in recent times as the launch of a new Offshore Package will take place in late June 2013. The Offshore Package combines the expertise of the companies into one, fully compatible and customizable package. The offshore specific equipment from both companies is now a collective list of 23 elements that can be tailored to a specific package depending on the requirements of the customer.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Hatlapa is known for their range of winches and especially the AHT winches, which are available in low or high pressure hydraulic drives to suit the customers’
36
needs with power, as well as size wise in single, double or even triple waterfall designs. The Combined Anchor-Mooring and Mooring winches, secondary winches as well as the Research Winches are also supplied fully customized if requested and have stood the test of time and are known for their durability and reliability in extreme conditions. All winches are fully customizable and have a variety of additional extras to make the operating of the winches safer, as well as increase the lifespan of the equipment. Additional equipment such as chain stoppers and capstans for the winches can now be incorporated into the package. A variety of servicing plans are also available.
Triplex AS has been working in the offshore sector for centuries and their cranes are a testament to the company’s expertise within the fishery and offshore sector. In order to branch out more into the offshore sector, Triplex had designed a variety of specialist Multi Deck Handlers. The Multi Deck Handlers can be divided into two categories, for AHT vessels and for PSVs. The AHT MDH package includes: ·
Lifting and pulling capacities of 42t and 30t over the whole deck
·
Anchor handling operations performed with remote control
·
Camera systems and floodlights
·
Heavy capacity lifting manipulator crane
·
Separate winch with 22t lifting capacity
·
Manipulator designed for “fine” operations
·
Separate wire clamp
The MDH for the PSVs include 20t lifting capacity
·
Loading and offloading containers in port
·
Moving and storing containers offshore
·
Tandem lifts of pipes and large items
Deck Machinery
·
Both packages can be enhanced with a variety of additional equipment such as wires, buoys, clamps and anchors. As safety in any situation is imperative, especially in rough or extreme conditions, the package also includes a variety of safety options. For the HATLAPA winches, a quick release option called SLIPSAFE is incorporated, this means that there is no claw clutch and the chain can be released through a slipping clutch with minimum break force.
Triplex also offers a variety of safety measurements taking into consideration that anchor and other chains on the deck can cause major safety hazards. The best know safety measure are the Shark Jaws, this was invented by Triplex in 1983 and is a unique way of handling chains and wires. This option automatically positions the chain or wire in the right way on deck and allows for a more secure way
of handling on-deck chains and ropes. Additional guiding tools are guide pins, stop pins, wire clamps, rope friction stoppers, tensioners and tractioners. A new addition to the safety equipment offered by Triplex is a Load Measurement System (LMS). This system is incorporated into the Shark Jaws and it measures the active load which is displayed on a monitor on the Bridge. The system will also be able to give out an alarm, if the load is about to, or is exceeding the defined safety perimeters. The LMS can also be used to unwind and untangle chains on deck. The operator is able to connect the chain from the winch to the Shark Jaw and thus eliminate any spin and
make for a safer operating environment. As household name in the Norwegian market, Triplex has recently secured a contract from BOA Offshore. The order entails a Tripelx MDH 42, as well as Shark Jaws, Vertical Guide Pins and a Spooling Block. Offshore Sales Manager Even Kippernes is excited about the cooperation: “This is the ultimate deck equipment for anchor handlers. The Triplex MDH can lift, move and park heavy anchors up to 42 tons and pull heavy chains and grappling hooks weighting up to 30 tons.” The delivery for this order is scheduled for the beginning of 2014.

FLEXITALLIC DEPLOYS YOUNG ENGINEER TO SINGAPORE Flexitallic, the international sealing products manufacturer, is deploying one of its talented young engineers to Singapore to increase the company’s presence and expertise in the South East Asia market. Paul Welsford, 28, from Morley, has been appointed as Regional Sales Manager for Singapore to further develop the company’s operations and capitalise on the opportunities to share best practice and skills with local industry. In less than four years with the company, Paul has made significant progress in his career, which has included representing the company on a project in the Caspian Sea region. Originally from the Isle of Wight, Paul first worked at Flexitallic on a placement during his degree in Product Design and Manufacture at Loughborough University. He returned to the company in 2009 when he was appointed as Senior Production Engineer. After managing a new manufacturing licensee agreement in Egypt in 2010 and supervising the Kammprofile Department a year later, Paul had the opportunity to join one of The Flexitallic Group’s gasket manufacturing joint ventures, Novus Sealing Caspian LLP, in Kazakhstan. During a year in the Caspian region, Paul played an instrumental role in the development of the joint venture winning new orders and helping to introduce new machinery to manufacture new products.

Flexitallic, which manufactures semimetallic and metallic gaskets for international industry sectors including the oil & gas, power generation and petrochemical industries, has been exporting to Singapore for more than a decade through an agreement with an incountry distributor.
To enhance that continuing arrangement, Paul will work to increase awareness of Flexitallic’s products and services by building relationships with end-users and delivering specialist training under the banner of Flexitallic’s Academy of Joint Integrity. The Academy of Joint Integrity provides accredited, bespoke practical training to engineers and technicians covering all areas of joint integrity. The programmes are designed to increase competencies to ensure pipeline integrity and reinforce Flexitallic’s commitment to safety and improving industry-wide standards. Paul Welsford said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to work in one of the most dynamic industrial markets in the world. Singapore has thriving oil & gas and
in which Flexitallic is internationallyrecognised. “Our Singapore partner distributors have enabled local companies to access our range of gaskets. This distributor relationship is essential in helping endusers specify the best products on the market. My presence will add value to these relationships, particularly in terms of supporting the skills development and safety practices of local engineers. In the past, we’ve had several enquiries through the Academy of Joint Integrity for training in Singapore. Being based in-country will allow us to fully realise these opportunities to work closely with companies to help develop their safety competencies.”

Environmental Technologies Ltd NEW SUBSEA MOISTURE SENSOR FROM ETL Engineering
Manufactured by Environmental Technologies, the CARDEV brand of specialist oil filtration has enjoyed continued success in the Subsea and ROV market for over fifteen years. The CARDEV SDU-H350UW-S is designed to dive with the ROV, protecting hydraulic circuits against water contamination caused by seal bypass, tool changes etc. Whilst CARDEV filters have proved to be invaluable in removing water (and salt) from the system, operators still wanted information back on the vessel indicating moisture levels in the oil, to safeguard against more serious cases of water ingress. To answer this need, ETL has developed the SEN-SS400 subsea moisture sensor. Rated for depths of up to 4000m, the device provides a 0-5V output via a choice of industry-standard electrical connectors, to indicate the level of dissolved water present in the oil. Initial Increases in the level of moisture in the oil can provide a valuable “early warning to the ROV operator.
