Welcome to the December issue of Subsea & Offshore Service Magazine, the journal for the Oil and Gas industry. We open this edition with commentary from Brandon Lewis (Great Yarmouth) who explains that the East of England’s unique all-energy coast is key to the region alongside new technology and science. In light of the current oil and gas climate, Welltec® suggest that the low price of oil has resulted in a rise in requests for their company’s intervention services (Pg8). From (Pg 16), our regional focus elaborates on how Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft have established themselves as one of the capitals for the global energy sector – alongside Aberdeen, Scotland and Houston, Texas.

On (Pg 20) we introduce one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of pressure regulators – Pressure Tech. With a growing demand for subsea installations, they have designed a range of pressure regulators to operate at depths of 3000 metres / 10,000 feet.

We round this edition off with our ongoing focus on all of the latest news and product innovations associated with the Hazardous Area market (Pg 40).

Energy industry key to Eastern Anglian Powerhouse The East of England’s unique all-energy coast is key to the East Anglian powerhouse alongside new technology and science, the Great Yarmouth MP told energy leaders. The industry was riding the “tough time” in oil and gas with some “really good news stories and opportunities for the East of England”, Brandon Lewis told the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR) annual general meeting. “The opportunities are here – in decommissioning in the Southern North Sea offshore wind and nuclear.” “There is so much going on here,” he said. He was lobbying for recognition of an East of England ‘powerhouse’ alongside the Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Engine, he said. “One of the challenges for Peter Aldous (Waveney MP) and me is to show Westminster just how much is happening here.” But he warned EEEGR members from the oil and gas, offshore wind and nuclear industries not to expect announcement of any government energy policy until the New Year following the Spending Review. In particular, the offshore wind industry would have to wait for an announcement of the next round of the funding mechanism Contracts for Difference, originally planned for this month, for post Round Three wind farms. But he stressed the Government’s commitment to a diverse energy policy.

“We will have to be a bit more patient waiting for Contracts for Difference. We have a Spending Review which may have implications. By the time we get to Christmas, the picture will be much clearer. We are determined to have a very secure energy industry going forward. I am personally very supportive of offshore wind. It has huge opportunities for us in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. We had good news with the Contracts for Difference for East Anglia One (in February) and I know people are waiting to see what will happen with the next round of Contracts for Difference.”

For growth and opportunity going forward, investment in the A47 was essential, Mr Lewis said. He would be pushing for work to start on the Vauxhall roundabout at Great Yarmouth in 2016 and not in 2019, the current proposed scheduled date. “I am still pushing for a 2016 start. I don’t know why we should wait until 2019. We have to put pressure on the Highways Agency for 2016. Once we get the Vauxhall roundabout sorted out, then we can make wider case for the Acle Straight or a third river crossing.”

Mr Lewis said that more than 200 people attending EEEGR’s Westminster reception in June had illustrated the strength of EEEGR and the East of England energy industry, he said.

“Business secretary Sajid Javid could not believe that EEEGR had filled the members’ dining room – normally only 20-30 people attend. EEEGR came with a clear message about what the East of England has to offer.” Brandon Lewis.

Formally announced at the AGM, new EEEGR board chair Patrick Phelan took over from Mark Goodall, who stood down. Patrick thanked Mark for his efforts on behalf of the board of directors and presented him with a gift. New board members elected to the EEEGR board were Graham Hacon, of 3sun and Michael Wilder, of Petans. In addition Mark Goodall, of Aker Solutions was re-elected on to the board. EEEGR Chief Executive Simon Gray told the meeting, at Great Yarmouth’s Imperial Hotel said:

“It has been a massive year of change with the publication of the Wood Review with SNS (southern North Sea) as one of its key priorities. The oil price falling from $100 to less than $50, uncertainty of Contracts for Difference award for offshore wind coupled with the uncertainty of political direction made it awkward for us to plan.” Simon Gray

EEEGR had re-energised its decommissioning Special Interest Group with the appointment of Julian Manning, of Baker Hughes, with a powerful new steering group. A new Marine SIG had been launched by Baroness Scott of Needham Market under the chairmanship of Richard Salisbury, of Fugro.

“The North Sea is the most industrialised ocean in the world. What we are trying to do through the SIG is to provide more opportunities for our members.” Skills for Energy developments included the announcement that the ECITB will continue in their support of the EEEGR Skills for Energy programme and the potential to expand the Energy Skills Foundation Programme, which runs at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft Colleges to other prospective colleges in the region and beyond. Gray also announced the launch of a new Careers Pathway guide to be launched at the Suffolk Skills show supported by EDF Energy.

News In Brief

News In Brief.... Tendeka wins contract to supply Autonomous ICD technology in Malaysia Tendeka, the provider of completions systems and services to the upstream oil and gas industry, has signed a two-year agreement with SapuraKencana Energy Peninsula Malaysia Inc. (SKE) for the exclusive application of Tendeka’s marketleading FloSure™ Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) valves. The contract was awarded through Tendeka’s partner in Malaysia, Aemos. The work will include modifying existing ICD screens to incorporate Tendeka’s AICD valves on the SKE-operated East Belumut oil field. The field is located approximately 160 miles offshore Peninsula Malaysia. Early water or gas breakthrough can result in lost recovery, lost revenues and reduced well life. Tendeka’s AICD, part of the company’s fully integrated sandface completions solution, self-adjusts to choke back zones where unwanted water or gas breakthrough has occurred to promote oil production. More than 10,000 FloSure™ AICD valves have been installed to date globally in light and heavy oil wells, ensuring uniform production longevity and increasing production rates by up to 50% in comparison to passive inflow control technology.

Gillian King, Tendeka’s Vice President of APAC, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract, our first AICD technology in Malaysia. Detailed analysis of the field’s reservoir characteristics indicate it is a perfect application for our technology and the modelling shows significant productivity improvements. This will be the first deployment of AICD technology within SKE-operated assets. We look forward to working closely with SKE to install this innovative solution and to share the positive results with other clients within Malaysia.”

Welltec® sees increased demand for services as operators shift focus International oil and gas industry solutions provider, Welltec®, has reported a marked increase in demand for its services in the North Sea as operators scale down drilling operations. The company, which is headquartered in Denmark and has bases in Aberdeen and globally, says a reduction in investment in new wells in the North Sea has resulted in resources being redirected towards enhancing oil recovery from existing wells. Welltec® said the low price of oil has resulted in a rise in requests for the company’s groundbreaking intervention services.

www.sosmagazine.biz

In real terms, this has equated to a 47% rise in intervention work over the four year period from 2012 to 2015 with firms making use of the vast range of technology in the Welltec® portfolio.

8

In particular, the oil price drop in 2015, down 50% compared to 2012, has driven the increased demand for intervention services. This is a development that corresponds with operators’ trend of cutting capital expenditures such as drilling activities, and shifting focus towards intervention – a trend recently documented by a leading oil and gas consultancy agency.

Welltec®’s innovative solutions are designed to increase oil recovery and activate deferred production while at the same time reducing lifting costs, allowing operators to get the best results in the current climate.

Welltec® has a range of intervention solutions available to clients, aimed at maximising oil recovery from existing wells – extending the lifespan of fields and at a much lower cost than fresh drilling.

“This new development is a necessary reaction from the industry and shows that the current downturn has prompted operators to search for new strategies to maintain or increase production. In the light of the current low oil price, we are seeing operators focus on protecting and optimising their existing assets and our solutions are designed to increase recovery while at the same time reduce lifting costs, allowing our customers to maintain positive cash flow. Just as other industry downturns historically have prompted innovation, the current downturn in the oil and gas industry opens up new possibilities and a chance for the industry to change its mindset, which presents a golden opportunity for companies which can offer an effective, lower cost alternative.”

The solutions portfolio features mechanical, milling, clean-out and conveyance services, which provide clients in the North Sea and globally with efficient methods of intervention to keep production up and costs down.

INEOS signs agreement with ExxonMobil Chemical Limited and Shell Chemicals Europe BV New sources of ethane for feedstock will complement North Sea supplies.

www.sosmagazine.biz

INEOS Europe AG, ExxonMobil Chemical Limited and Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. announced a long-term sale and purchase agreement to secure ethane from US shale gas for the Fife Ethylene Plant (FEP) at Mossmorran in Scotland, from mid 2017.

10

The Fife plant will receive ethane from INEOS’ new import terminal in Grangemouth, Scotland. Access to this new source of feedstock will help complement supplies from North Sea natural gas fields. The agreement will also ensure the competitiveness of a major manufacturing facility in Scotland and help secure skilled jobs in the long run. FEP is owned and operated by ExxonMobil and Shell has 50 percent capacity rights. Ethane gas is a vital raw material needed to produce ethylene, which itself is used in the

manufacture of a broad range of products across the UK and is exported to Europe and other world markets. Access to ethane from shale production will provide sufficient raw material to run UK steamcrackers to make ethylene at full operating rates.

“Today’s agreement helps to secure additional feedstock for the Fife plant.” Karen McKee, Vice President of ExxonMobil’s global basic chemicals business.

INEOS has committed £450 million to construct the new ethane import terminal at its Grangemouth facility. It represents the most significant investment in UK petrochemical manufacturing in recent times and is supported by both the UK and Scottish governments. An existing pipeline will transport the gas from Grangemouth to Fife. The Fife Ethylene Plant is one of Europe’s

largest and most modern ethylene facilities. The plant started production in 1985, and is one of only four natural gas-fed steam crackers in Europe. It was the first plant specifically designed to use natural gas liquids from the North Sea as feedstock. Alongside INEOS Grangemouth, it supplies manufacturing in Scotland, the rest of the UK and export markets with ethylene. It has an annual capacity of 830,000 tonnes of ethylene. Shell Chemicals has 50 percent capacity rights at the Fife Ethylene Plant.

Directors rally to breathe new life into familiar name The competitiveness of Great Yarmouth’s energy sector has encouraged two industry specialists to set up two new companies with a familiar name. Mike Jones and Martin Spurr have launched Red7 Offshore and Red7 Inshore Diving, confident that the region’s low cost base will enable them to win important diving and marine contracts on oil & gas and wind farm projects and inland/inshore work. The two men were directors of Red7 Group, which went into administration following the shock announcement in February of the closure of the group. They believe lower overheads, a leaner operation and Great Yarmouth’s reputation for providing more cost-competitive services than other energy regions will help them build the new business.

Right: Some of the Red7 team working in the Wash near the Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farm site.

“The drop in the oil price hit many companies very hard but we believe there is an upside to the current situation. Great Yarmouth has always been more competitive than places like Aberdeen, and in the current economic climate more and more customers are looking at the supply chain in our area to provide them with services they would previously have sourced elsewhere. This is a good time to be in business on the east coast and we believe there will be lots of opportunities for us in inshore and offshore diving, particularly in the exciting arena of offshore renewables. Red7 is a lean company with a huge amount of experience and an outstanding reputation for good customer support.”

Mr Jones, Managing Director.

He said the former Red7 Group had made a profit of £7.2million last year, much

of it from Red7’s offshore operations in Great Yarmouth, which enabled the planned investment in new vessels and ROVs. Although Red7 Group had a considerable backlog of work in the Southern North Sea, the sudden and dramatic drop in the oil price had prompted some customers to delay or cancel projects, affecting investor confidence. “Sadly, on the day of administration itself the company received an order from SNS operator Perenco to deliver a £4million offshore inspection contract, although even this was unable to prevent closure. This is a good indication that work is out there and we have the skills to win it,” said Mr Jones. “It was a tough time, and still is, but we are determined to rebuild our business with a solid foundation that will provide good quality local jobs,” said Mr Jones. Red7 currently has five former staff working on inshore projects, including diving engineers Craig Shiers and Stuart Clarke who are now both directors of the company.

Regional Focus - Great Yarmouth

Celebrating 50 years of offshore operations from Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft On September 17, 1965, offshore workers drilling in the North Sea made a discovery of national importance – one that put the historic Norfolk coastal port and resort of Great Yarmouth at the centre of a massive investment and jobs boom which continues to this day. Workers aboard BP’s 5,600-ton drilling rig, Sea Gem, first became excited when the drilling fluid returning from the bottom of the well was tending to froth and bubble, and the dials began to flicker. Drilling continued to a depth of 10,000ft, and by the end of 1965 a 12 metre high flare was burning at the top of the rig – a beacon of the discovery of gas in the Southern North Sea. What followed the discovery of the West Sole gas field was huge investment from around the world. Other field discoveries followed – Viking later in 1965, Leman Bank, Indefatigable and Hewett in 1966 – and the Southern North Sea gas industry boomed, with Great Yarmouth becoming its UK centre. Today, 50 years on, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft are recognised as a global energy sector capital – alongside Aberdeen in Scotland and Houston in Texas – and has prospects of sharing in £50bn of investment in energy in the East of England over the next 20 years, including oil and gas exploration, gas storage and platform decommissioning, and offshore windfarms. Great Yarmouth, the main supply base for the offshore gas industry in the Southern North Sea, is home to a 400 company-strong marine energy supply chain, with nearly 7,000 people working directly in energy and related fields, such as manufacturing, technical services and utilities. Its technicians are renowned for their expertise all around the world and the supply chain of companies is sizeable.

www.sosmagazine.biz

For many firms with the sought-after Great Yarmouth postcodes, one fifth of their business relates to Southern North Sea gas, with

16

their other operations spread globally and often across the sector. Continued business investment in the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft area reflects huge confidence in the local economy, the skilled workforce, the ports and business parks. The area also benefits from an Enterprise Zone, Assisted Area Status and designation as a Centre for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE). To provide space for the sector to grow further and create jobs, Great Yarmouth Borough Council continues to build office and industrial units for sale and rent at the Enterprise Zone on Beacon Park, and to work with partners, including New Anglia LEP, to invest in and support key infrastructure improvements in the park and wider region, helping businesses to relocate to and expand within the area. Considerable reserves of gas are still to be recovered in the Southern North Sea after five decades of continuous activity. Looking to the next 50 years, there is an increasing focus on prolonging the life of North Sea oil and gas assets, either bringing drilling rigs in for major refurbishments or upgrading platforms in situ – offering a whole new range of commercial opportunities. Decommissioning is also a new growing area, with Great Yarmouth’s Outer Harbour recently announced by Veolia-Peterson as the location for a purpose-built £1m decommissioning facility. Great Yarmouth will also be the base for construction and subsequent operations and maintenance activity for the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm. Further opportunities will also arise from the East Anglia ONE Windfarm, with construction expected to start in 2017. Deirdre Michie, the Chief Executive of Oil & Gas UK, the leading representative body for the UK offshore oil and gas industry, said: “The East of England is a key hub for the UK oil and gas sector with hundreds of companies supplying goods and services to the industry. Below: Two photos of an offshore worker training on a “Christmas tree” in Great Yarmouth. Photographs accredited to Simmons Edeco Europe Limited.

“The industry is facing very challenging times, with the significant fall in production efficiency and sharply rising costs of recent years having left the UK sector particularly exposed to the drop in oil price. “However, concerted action to address costs and improve efficiency is well underway to help restore competitiveness and ensure the sector becomes more resilient and competitive in a world of sustained lower oil prices and on that journey, progress is now being made.

“The East of England is well-placed, with its extensive expertise and technology, to grasp the opportunities that will present themselves in maximising recovery of the 20bn barrels of oil and gas that still remain to be extracted on the UK Continental Shelf.” • Businesses interested in finding out more about opportunities should visit www.theenergyzone.co.uk • Beacon Park, a rapidly-growing hub in Great Yarmouth for expanding energy businesses, is part of the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft (New Anglia) Enterprise Zone, which provides a range of benefits for energy-related businesses to help them grow, including a discount on business rates of up to £275,000 over five years, simplified planning, and super-fast broadband. A range of high-specification office and industrial units are available. • Businesses interested in moving to Beacon Park can contact the appointed agents, Bycroft Commercial (01493 844489) and Arnolds Keys (01603 620551), or visit:

www.beaconpark.co.uk Growing opportunities – decommissioning There is a potential market of £30bn in decommissioning over the next 30 years, with more than 470 platforms eventually to be wholly or partially removed from the North Sea.

James Johnson, Decommissioning Manager at Peterson, which has been based in Great Yarmouth since 1997, said: “We have a real opportunity, working in collaboration with our partners, to establish Great Yarmouth as the centre for decommissioning for the Southern North Sea, delivering comprehensive, safe and cost effective decommissioning solutions.”

Paul Rushton, Managing Director, Magma Products.

Businesses explain why they are here Energy sector businesses say Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft remain the ideal bases – with some even seeing growth, despite the global market conditions. Among the longest established energy sector firms in Great Yarmouth is SIMMONS EDECO Europe Limited, which moved to the borough in 1967 as EDECO Petroleum Services Ltd. The business, which operates in oil and gas wellhead maintenance and repair, and valve healthcare services, employs 72 staff at its Great Yarmouth headquarters. Graham Lincoln, the business support manager, said: “The main reason we stay is very much the port and the logistics – we are putting equipment on and off supply ships every day. “We’ve got all the local engineering expertise we need right here – so rarely do we have to go outside a 20-mile radius to get any work done. And from the point of view of investment and doing businesses, if you are going to be operating in the Southern North Sea, you’ve got to be in Great Yarmouth – they take you seriously.” Below: Newly-built unit at Beacon Park Business Park, Great Yarmouth.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Recently, energy logistics provider, Peterson, in partnership with environmental solutions provider, Veolia, announced a £1m investment in the development of a new, purpose-built decommissioning facility at Great Yarmouth’s Outer Harbour. The new facility, developed in cooperation with the Port, and with support funding from New Anglia LEP, will enable topside, jackets and subsea equipment to be off loaded for dismantling and recycling.

“With the UK decommissioning market set to be worth more than £30bn in the next 25 years, there is huge scope for the Great Yarmouth region. Our new office at Great Yarmouth has already proved its worth; we are closer to clients and project teams and have access to skilled workers. We’re currently working on a decommissioning project in the Southern North Sea and we are confident of winning additional work by the end of the year. We’ve also invested in the sector by developing Decommissioning Management System to create an auditable trail to meet rules and regulations for such projects.”

Oil & gas company expands with new wells workstream A Great Yarmouth oil and gas engineering business is expanding and adding a new workstream to its offshore portfolio. EPIC International has appointed a new Well Services Manager made redundant by major international company in the town, adding wellhead and valve maintenance, repair and reworking to its offer to North Sea operators. Billy Robinson brings more than 25 years’ experience to EPIC International, which employs up to 100 people from its bases on Gapton Hall and the Ivory Coast, North Africa. Managing Director Dave Rowan said expanding the company’s services during challenging times meant EPIC had a broader offer for cost-conscious North Sea operators on contracts.

“Now EPIC International can offer a complete package to smaller operators, which can lead to substantial savings in the long term at a time when operators are being challenged with their operational costs. Billy brings an extensive knowledge of drilling and well services processes along with a vast network of contacts within suppliers and operators. Previously, operators would have to go to big companies that were based outside the area. Now we can offer in-house services.” Dave Rowan, Managing Director.

EPIC International has experienced year on year growth since Mr Rowan set up the company 15 years ago after a career working for companies in Great Yarmouth. It provides operations, management and maintenance support and well service personnel, procurement and logistical services and been involved in the commissioning and decommissioning of key platforms. It has extensive experience supporting Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs) for offshore operator companies.

www.sosmagazine.biz

It is currently engaged on a pioneering model for a major North Sea asset owner, saving it £12m a year. EPIC International – known for its innovative approach to offshore problems - developed its Late in Life Operations (LILO) model for the five-well gas platform after an approach from the owner, who had worked with EPIC previously, including during the platform’s commissioning. LILO is a ‘halfway house’ to decommissioning. The owner wanted EPIC to design a model to leave its options open either to continue production when the industry picks up or fully decommission. When the owner approached Mr Rowan, it was as paying an operator £12.5m a year to look after the platform. Its contract with EPIC is worth £500,000 a year. An eight-strong EPIC crew is currently working to close the platform by the end of November. The platform will effectively be ‘mothballed’ - light-housed and monitored by satellite from EPIC’s Great Yarmouth office. 18

EPIC International will be the named operator from the end of November and Duty Holder status from the New Year. “This is a big opportunity for us to do something new and develop a model that we can offer to other operators. “It is about shutting the platform down, making it safe and looking after it. This is a marketable model for other operators, which removes the enormous overheads for platforms that have diminished production and will either be revived or decommissioned in the future. “I don’t know of any other companies in the town of our size to have Duty Holder and operator status.” Mr Rowan said he was keen to employ Mr Robinson when he faced redundancy to keep skills and services in Great Yarmouth for when the industry picks up when oil prices rise.

“Every time a company leaves the town, it can take decades of skills and knowledge with it as well as vital services for the town. I have been speaking to some of the smaller operators, they feel there is a need to retain these skills locally. We need to keep the knowledge, services and skills here as an investment in the future of Great Yarmouth. It is important that us working in Great Yarmouth, believing things will turn around workwise, keep services here.” Dave Rowan, Managing Director.

“Things are very difficult at the moment. Payment terms are longer, budgets are tighter. Working smarter is key. We have had to make cost cuts of 30 per cent for some clients but with the knowledge of operating more efficiently these can be achieved. “In the past, prices have escalated without control. These cuts are bringing it back to a realistic level,” Mr Rowan said. Mr Robinson said he was delighted to be staying in Great Yarmouth after job offers in London and Aberdeen. “I believe that Great Yarmouth has a strong future. It has always survived and had a great resilience the key is the people and the knowledge here. The East of England can react a lot quicker than other places due to the fact it has smaller more dynamic companies that expect change rather than wait for it. We have a superb supply chain.”

Pressure Tech Ltd Pressure Tech Ltd is one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of pressure regulators. Over the last fifteen years, the company has developed an extensive range of high quality brass and stainless steel pressure regulators and has remained strong, continuing to grow throughout the many changes in the economic climate.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Success has been attributed to the company’s focus on technology and innovative products, working closely with customers to design and manufacture a wealth of new products that provide accurate pressure control to systems. In addition, Pressure Tech has continually looked for ways to optimise its operations in key areas of the business; investing £0.5m in the latest CNC machinery; installing cleaning procedures to cover Oxygen applications; and building a strong team of employees committed

20

to supporting customer needs. Their knowledge of pressure regulator principles and rapid response to problem solving, has led to the development of an extensive range of pressure control regulators for use on gas analyser systems to hydraulic wellhead systems, as well as custom solutions designed specifically to satisfy customer requirements. With a growing demand for subsea installations, Pressure Tech have designed a range of pressure regulators to operate at depths of 3000 metres/10,000 feet. Two subsea regulators have now been developed, tested and successfully installed in several offshore systems throughout the world. The SS-690 and SS-414 regulators have the option of either a sealed spring chamber - to ensure the pressure set topside is maintained at the pre-set values irrespective of the depth of seawater, or referenced to external seawater - to track pressure according to seawater depth. Both have the ability to vary the set-point relative to the external pressure

conditions and incorporate the unique ceramic seating feature already proven on topside hydraulic regulators. All critical features when installed 3000m below sea level, where failure is not an option! Each subsea regulator is function tested to check for repeatability and stability in Pressure Tech’s own hyperbaric chamber, simulating external seawater pressures up to 300 bar/4350psi, whilst pressures up to 1034 bar/15,000psi are applied to the internals of the regulator. The facility ensures that Pressure Tech are able to maintain complete control of not only design and manufacturing, but also in-house testing of any subsea product.

MEC-FITTM inspection of Flexible Riser with 55° wire angle structure

www.sosmagazine.biz

The inspection of a 13” Oil Export Riser with a tight 55° wire angle structure was successfully completed in the North Sea in October 2015 utilising the modified MEC-Hug Crawler adapted with the MEC-FITTM flexible riser inspection technique.

24

This inspection challenge was not only due to the tight 55° wire angle structure in both the outer and inner armour layers of the flexible riser but also the presence of a thick 15.3mm outer sheath with an anti-wear tape of 2.5mm between the two armour layers. Without the pressure armour layer, this flexible riser is susceptible to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and possibly Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC). The aim of the inspection was to scan the flexible riser from top down through the sag bend to detect the cracking initiated by SCC and HIC in the outer and inner tensile armour layer. Prior to the inspection campaign, the MEC-FITTM technique was successfully verified on a simulated test sample with EDM cracks in 45° and 90° angle and all through-cracks in all the layers as well as partdepth cracks in the outer layer were detected in blind tests. The detectable crack size in relation to the wire thickness in the outer tensile layer was 30% for near side defects and 60-70% for far side defects. For the inner tensile layer, 100% of the near and far side defects were detected.

The inspection was performed utilising the MEC-Hug Crawler which was rebuilt to enable the circumferential scanning in order to accommodate the scan requirement of the 55° wire angle structure. The inspection tool was also customised for deployment by an inspection-class ROV from the installation which resulted in substantial cost savings for the Operator in comparison to a vessel campaign with by a work-class ROV. The Client was satisfied with the successful inspection operation and more importantly, that the riser operation could be continued safely.

TSC’s subsea ACFM® inspection technology assures the approval for containership weld repair, saving time and costs, all within schedule.

During a visual inspection procedure by SOS Ltd, a surface breaking fatigue crack had been found on the port-side of the rudder. After arresting holes had been drilled, the crack was repaired under water using the stick-welding technique. The scope of work specified that an ACFM® inspection of the repair weld and HAZ should be conducted to determine the presence or absence of any surface breaking cracks. The inspection was carried out under the watchful eye of a Lloyd’s Register representative, using TSC’s Amigo™ system with

subsea ACFM® probes, deployed by divers provided by SOS Ltd. TSC’s ACFM® Technology is the ideal inspection solution in this situation as it can be used subsea and the surface to be inspected requires relatively little cleaning or the removal of paint. Therefore, all the work could be carried out whilst the ZIM India was docked in Haifa Port to offload containers. There was no need to dry-dock the vessel, saving the customer considerable costs and time.

Subsea Equipment

In response to a request from Specialty Offshore Services Ltd., based in Israel, TSC has recently completed the inspection of a repair weld on the rudder of the ZIM India, a 260m containership owned by the ZIM group.

“Although this was a relatively short and straightforward job, it once again showed how the use of ACFM® can make significant efficiency gains for our customers. By being able to work underwater, the inspection could be carried out without interrupting the vessel’s schedule.” Frank Luikinga, Inspector at TSC’s.

Moshe Gutman, from Specialty Offshore Services Ltd., praised the professional approach, speed of response and excellent services of TSC throughout the whole project. The Lloyd’s Register Senior Surveyor present, Sorin Bolan, called TSC’s ACFM® inspection “revolutionary” and confirmed that this could well be the first time that a repair weld has been accepted as a permanent repair, following subsea welding and inspection. Training & Certification

The Underwater Centre provides MSc students with a deeper understanding of working subsea The course will form part of a module for students attending the one year Subsea Engineering MSc. The Underwater Centre is working with Robert Gordon University (RGU)’s School of Engineering to incorporate a commercial diving familiarisation course as part of the recently introduced MSc in Subsea Engineering one year full time course. The Centre will deliver theoretical sessions covering diving physics, diving physiology, gases and diving systems, and diving regulations, using the extensive facilities and subsea equipment available in Fort William. The first intake of students visited the Centre in Fort William last month to complete the week-long course, ‘Humans in the Ocean’. Each day began with classroom based theoretical training sessions before visiting the Centre’s various dive sites including the surface supplied Nitrox and surface supplied diving sites, and finally the saturation diver training barge. The students also toured the Centre’s recompression chamber facility and ROV training spread. This practical exposure reinforced the theoretical training making it a unique learning experience for RGU’s students.

www.sosmagazine.biz

The Masters in Subsea Engineering is aimed at engineers who already have some relevant offshore oil and gas experience and high calibre graduates who wish to enhance their employability in the subsea industry. A broad range of topics are covered, including well engineering and topside processing facilities, as well as the core areas of subsea engineering including: subsea systems, subsea control, pipelines and risers, corrosion and subsea reliability.

TRAIN-R app makes waves in the North Sea Training and Competency app reaches over half of the North Sea workforce Half the North Sea offshore workforce has downloaded a mobile app designed to give them access to their training and certification records anywhere at any time. In its first year, the OPITO TRAIN-R app has been used by over 11,500 workers since its introduction in September 2014.

TRAIN-R also provides a list of vital OPITO approved training providers’ contacts, enabling quick and efficient selection of training vendor. The quick uptake of the app in the North Sea highlights the emphasis put on safety and competency in the offshore sector.

“The popularity of TRAIN-R shows how mobile technology is helping to empower the North Sea industry and makes

it easier for individuals to ensure their training records are accessible and in date. TRAIN-R really allows users to take control of their training and certifications. Its success so far has highlighted that, despite the downturn, there is still a concentrated focus on safety and competency. We hope that this uptake is replicated globally and can continue to provide tangible benefits and improvements to the competency and training aspect of offshore life.”

www.sosmagazine.biz

TRAIN-R was developed in line with the growing demand for remote and flexible tracking and planning of training certifications in the offshore workforce. The app, which is available on both Apple and Android devices, allows users access to the secure database which in turn provides them with information on their personal OPITO training records through the Vantage system.

Around 76% of the UK offshore workforce is employed on a contracting basis, forcing workers to rely upon notifications from employers and paper-based training records to track their training records and renew them on time.

Is your training working? Let’s be honest; we’re all guilty of looking at certain jobs and professions and thinking - “I could do that what’s the big deal?” We’ve probably all fancied ourselves as a photographer at some point because, with the latest camera, how hard can it be? Referees are another example - how often have you truly believed you could do a better job than the ref? Certain professions look easy because of the talent and capabilities of those doing them! We don’t recognise the complexity of the role or the skill and effort involved in making it look so simple. What about training? It looks easy too, right?

www.sosmagazine.biz

Wrong.

28

As we respond to industry challenges, more of us than ever are being tasked with delivering training without previous training experience or qualifications. Ignorance is not bliss! Just in case it’s not as easy as it looks, imorph has created a quick guide to help you assess the effectiveness of your training sessions.

1. Is your group engaged? Are your delegates looking at you when you are talking or are they gazing longingly out of the window? Are they on their phones instead of listening or participating in a task? What is their body language saying? Try to minimise the impact of distractions and boredom by mixing up yourpresentation styles and tools and involving your delegates where you can. Pay attention to how the group’s body language changes throughout the session and respond accordingly by taking breaks or introducing discussions and activities when people start to flag. 2. Is there any discussion? A chatty group eager to respond to your questions is often an indicator of an excellent session. Asking and answering questions and participating in discussions with each other and the Trainer is common when the group is relaxed and interested in the content.

3. Can your group recall what they have learned? Throughout key sections of your course, ask your delegates to recall what has been covered so far. If they can remember - good job. If they can’t? Identify topics that are repeat offenders and review how you could train this content more effectively. Training - it’s not as easy as it looks!

DBS enhances reputation for outstanding quality with NORSOK certification

Davidsons Blast Services (DBS), headquartered in Peterhead, successfully achieved the globally recognised NORSOK M501 certification, after demonstrating their competence in surface preparation and application of coating materials, in accordance with NORSOK M501 specification. NORSOK standards are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure adequate safety and cost effectiveness for industry developments and operations. The course was undertaken by DBS’s expert blasting and coating team, which saw them carrying out blast cleaning and painting techniques in accordance to the strict standards of the NORSOK specification. The assessment involved achieving the

correct surface profile during the blasting process and applying the approved paint to a specified dry film thickness range (DFT). This was evaluated by an independent assessor who completed the process with an adhesion test. This was to ensure that the specified DFT’s had been achieved, therefore ensuring coating integrity.

“At DBS we strive to build upon our excellent reputation for quality and we are extremely proud of ourteam’s success. Their successful achievement of the NORSOK M501 certification in addition to the company’s ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications further demonstrates our commitment to offer clients a first class service.

Family firm, DBS, uses the highest quality products on the market, together with an expert team of blasting and coating experts to achieve a first class service. To help sustain the life of customers’ assets and complete the protection process, DBS apply a wide range of protective coatings includingepoxy, acrylic, polyurethane, antifouling, glass flake and thermal spray (TSA), and the quality of each finished product is verified by the company’s NACE qualified inspector.

“The NORSOK M501 standard was developed for challenging offshore environments and is a major standard for the assessment of product reliability for both onshore and offshore application. Achieving the certification demonstrates to our clients that our trusted and expert team of blasting and coating technicians together with a range of high quality products protects a wide range of assets in the most demanding markets and environments.” Said Nicola Harris, Commercial Director for DBS.

Training & Certification

Enhancing the mind improves business When thinking about training, what usually springs to mind is the physical or technical skills nurtured and developed, and the tangible results achieved. However an often overlooked side of training exists, one that is becoming increasingly important in this continually challenging economic climate. The behavioural and psychological side of training is arguably equally as important as the physical. Full-time training professional and part-time psychology student, Lynn Elder, Development Director at Trace Learning Solutions, a learning and development management organisation based in Aberdeen, recognises the overwhelming importance it plays in business and the multitude of benefits it can bring.

“Although skills-based training is extremely important, we often see a lack of understanding or acceptance of the behavioural and psychological aspect of training. This side of training can bring hugely positive results at both a personal and organisational level. Through developing an understanding of how people think and behave and enhancing this through training, the areas of health and safety, problem solving, workplace morale, confidence and competence can be dramatically increased.” Lynn Elder, Development Director at Trace Learning Solutions.

www.sosmagazine.biz

With the recognition of this importance, Lynn has ensured that this aspect of training is present across their global directory of training providers, providing individuals and companies with access to behavioural and psychological, as well as physical and technical, training opportunities.

30

Lynn adds, “At one end of the spectrum, we have training providers that focus purely on physical and technical skills. At the other we have companies providing psychological training in isolation, and in the middle of the spectrum there are training providers that integrate both. We have companies on board across this spectrum, and the

importance and popularity of the latter two types is continually increasing.” People Factor Consultants Ltd (PFC), one of Trace Learning Solutions’ providers, sits in the middle of the spectrum as it specialises in both technical and non-technical safety and performance. Professor Margaret Crichton leads the non-technical side of People Factor’s training courses, whole-heartedly believing that it is of equal importance when training staff. Her team teaches the theories underpinning the six key non-technical skills in their unique training simulator, including situation awareness, decisionmaking, communications, teamwork, leadership and stress management, then observes delegates in PFC’s unique training simulator and focuses on training participants to reflect on these skills and develop techniques to enhance them. Margaret comments: “We encourage people to take a step back and view the full picture, as this allows them to assess what is going on and tailor their behaviour accordingly, which can prevent incidents and optimise their performance. There are so many simple techniques that reap the largest rewards, for example verifying information being exchanged by repeating it back to a colleague, instead of simply saying, “okay”. “In high-hazard industries, 65-90% of incidents occur due to human error, and by learning to enhance these six non-technical skills, this figure can be significantly reduced. Nurturing these skills also allows staff, particularly those that have been in the same role for a long period of time, to break bad habits and change their attitudes about what they do and how they do it.” Bon Accord Hypnotherapy, another of Trace

Learning Solutions’ training providers, falls at the right side of the spectrum, focusing purely on the psychological facet of training and development. Anne Wyatt, owner and qualified solutionsfocused hypnotherapist and psychotherapist, says, “The conscious part of the human mind is responsible for only a fraction of our behaviour and way of thinking. The subconscious mind has an advanced intellectual and a primitive side. When we operate from the intellectual part of the brain we are positive, see solutions and are generally positive and calm. “However, when we are stressed, anxious or angry, the primitive part of our brain takes over and we lose intellectual control. Once our brain is locked into that way of thinking, we limit our ability to see solutions and think positively, and it ultimately limits potential, mental well being and workplace performance.” She continues, “Through my solutionsfocused therapy technique, people can get back to their optimal state of mind. By understanding how the brain works, and undergoing this type of training, people can increase problem solving, positivity, wellbeing, concentration and team spirit. This therapy can also help people overcome fears, for example the fear of presenting or being interviewed.” At a time when there are redundancies across the city, Trace Learning Solutions recognises that, now more than ever, employees need to be focused, effective and confident in their roles to ensure their businesses succeed. Behavioural and psychological-focused training is increasingly a sought after solution, and must be a core focus for businesses going forward.

Revolutionary technology nets deal with Statoil for start-up company

Sand control engineering specialist, Darcy, has signed a framework agreement with Statoil, to supply its unique hydraulic screen technology to the oil giant’s assets in the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The contract, which could have a seven year duration, could be worth millions to Darcy, representing a step-change in the company’s growth. With 70% of mature and deep water oil and gas wells requiring sand control and experiencing costly challenges, Darcy believes there is a significant global market for the hydraulic screen technology enabling operators to complete sand plagued wells much more efficiently.

“This framework agreement is a major milestone in Darcy’s growth and signals a new trajectory for the company. Having invested considerably in the development of our hydraulic screens, it is fantastic to now have proven technology which we aim to roll out globally at

a time when the industry is focused on driving efficiencies and reducing costs.” Steve Bruce, CEO of Darcy.

Darcy designed and developed the technology in response to industry concerns about the high failure rate and costs of traditional gravel packing methods to control produced sand in well completions operations. “Our hydraulic system offers a more efficient alternative and enables operators to complete wells which would be difficult or impossible using traditional sand control methods,” explained Mr Bruce. The agreement comes on the back of a world-first successful installation of Darcy’s technology on Statoil’s Statfjord oil field in the Norwegian North Sea. This field faces challenges with continuous pressure depletion and reduced margins for pumping traditional open hole gravel packs. Integrating with Statoil’s completion equipment suppliers, the activation of the hydraulic screen took less than one hour of rig time. The hydraulic system provides ‘pump free’ sand control delivering increased operational efficiency and simplifying logistics in drilling

and completing wells to reduce time and costs. For the first time in the industry, it uses patented hydraulic technology that is easily activated from the surface to provide an alternative to gravel packing which is more time-consuming and labour intensive. Mr Bruce added: “Securing field trials of new technology in oil and gas has always been challenging and we are grateful to Statoil for being so receptive to and supportive of our technology.

Hydraulics & Pneumatics

An Aberdeen based startup company has secured a contract with Statoil following a successful trial of its downhole well completions technology.

The hydraulic screen is suited to deepwater regions, mature fields and HPHT wells. The technology eliminates the need for specialist pumping crews or additional downhole tools required for gravel packing. It is easily integrated with standard completions equipment which provides logistical efficiencies on transportation and bed space.

Hydraulics company starts cost saving innovations to Middle Eastern market An Aberdeenshire company calls on further innovations to support the oil & gas sector. ITC Hydraulics, the hydraulic solutions specialist, last month showcased two of its newest innovations at ADIPEC, The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference.

“We brought two of our latest product offerings to ADIPEC at a time when service companies, like ourselves, need to look at bringing cost and time saving solutions to the market. We need to be providing our clients with

therefore reducing costs.”

“Our Combo Reeler was designed with vessel deck space in mind, as it is at such a premium. We have designed a hydraulic umbilical hose reel with integral HPU as one unit, rather than two, for the deployment of hoses/cables for subsea operations.

ITC’s client list includes Subsea 7, Aker Solutions and Oceaneering.

“This allows the self-propelled hose reeler to be installed on deck without the requirement of connecting hoses between the reeler and the HPU, minimising footprint and deck trip hazards.

Ian concludes, “Deeper cost cutting is a continuing key theme for the oil majors and service companies need to be able to offer and respond to this.”

Safety Equipment & Fire Protection

Getting the best from HAZOPs by Allan Cameron, Technical Director, Sabre Safety) Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs) have been around for decades and are one of the most effective ways of identifying process hazards, assessing risks and producing prioritised actions to deal with those risks.

of information needs to be checked ahead of the meeting. Almost inevitably, not all information will be available. If a particular section of the operation is missing in terms of details, or the team knows that it has recently been majorly modified, it might be best to leave it out and mark it down to be HAZOPed later.

In today’s state of the industry, it is especially important that all process is organised and streamlined to reach outcomes as efficiently as possible. HAZOPs are no exception to this. So what are the ways in which this can be achieved? And what are the challenges that need to be met?

Focus on the task and the team A HAZOP is all about team effort and concentration. There should be no distractions, including distractions of people attending for other purposes such as information gathering, and the group itself should be limited to half a dozen, well prepared people. These people should of course be able to see the operation or process from different points of view. They should also include the right mix of people: the HAZOP process is a good opportunity for people to learn about the process, but there should be someone on the team who has been involved in a similar operation.

www.sosmagazine.biz

Get the planning right How long does the HAZOP need to achieve its objectives? It is important that an informed estimate is made of the time that needs to be allocated: sometimes, people outside the group, can be at the heart of such a decision and can get it badly wrong. This means that time for crucial discussion and brainstorming could be compromised, with adverse effects on the quality of the analysis. To avoid this happening, there needs to be a well founded estimated agenda of the ground to be covered, agreed in advance by all participants, and with some flexibility to adjust the agenda (up or down) as required.

36

Getting the time allocation for a HAZOP right is always a major issue. If time is tight, then it is better to miss out particular areas in the review rather compromising on quality. If people have come from around the world then it is ideal if an extra day can be built into the schedule to allow for contingencies. If the process finishes early, then it is always much less problematic to allow them to leave early rather than asking them to stay on. Progress throughout the HAZOP has to be carefully and constantly monitored by the leader. Do the prep As with most things in life, poor preparation leads to bad results, and HAZOPs are no different. All information brought along to and used as part of a HAZOP must be the latest and must be complete to avoid wasting valuable time and energy. The completeness

Keep the right focus Restricting the brainstorming is definitely a mistake. All too often, this happens by key words, parameters and nodes being left out. Or there is just a superficial review of key words and parameters, listing just the most obvious causes of deviation. This can set a pattern that goes against in-depth analysis as the group repeats the same causes. Prior information, including a HAZOP from a ‘similar’ project, can also take people away from analysing the possible specific risk scenarios, including the non-obvious ones. In the ‘HAZOP by difference’ approach, care must be taken especially in cases where similar equipment has been used in different operations. It is easy to focus on the hardware changes and not to consider all the process conditions of the current operation, which could also have an operational impact. Avoid box ticking! It is not about ‘ticking all the boxes’, but it is about identifying all possible deviations through discussion. Once again, brainstorming is the way to avoid this and the limitations of the HAZOP table.

Above: Allan Cameron, Technical Director, Sabre Safety. Make targeted recommendations HAZOPS should identify all the risk scenarios but make recommendations only for those scenarios that have not been covered by safeguards: these are the recommendations that really matter for the safety of the vessel, rig, operation or process. It should go without saying that all recommendations should be clear, specific and unambiguous. Conclusion Over recent years HAZOPS meetings have opened out to include more input from more specialists. This is definitely the case with Sabre Safety as an expert company in dealing with irrespirable gases and providing associated engineering solutions. In the past, we would have been brought in as a ‘call-off’; today, we are generally involved in the briefing stages too as a fresh pair of eyes to provide feedback to the planners. This approach in itself works to build a better, much more co-ordinated team of people, improving safety and operations. It also produces more creative thinking, and that too is at a premium in today’s challenging industry.

N-Sea successfully completes unexploded ordnance campaign

Transmission system operator, TenneT’s grid connection system connects wind parks in the North Sea with the high-voltage grid onshore. The survey campaign undertaken by N-Sea comprised a geophysical survey (multibeam, Side Scan Sonar (SSS), Sub Bottom Profiler (SBP) and Magnetometry) of 137 targets within the main cable corridor and adjacent anchor corridors, totalling almost 2000km. N-Sea managed this project from Eemshaven, with a local team managing all near shore and offshore vessels whilst processing all acquired data. Four survey vessels were utilised, including the Noordhoek Pathfinder. The investigation element of the project resulted in three positively-identified explosives; two sea mines and one grenade. The sea mines were destroyed on site, with N-Sea coordinating the operation under supervision of the German explosive ordnance disposal service. Requiring a more accurate identification, the grenade disposal was carried out on board a separate vessel, through use of a mobile x-ray machine. Top right: The Noordhoek Pathfinder vessel.

“The corridor started in very shallow water mudflats for a 12 nautical mile zone, north of Borkum in Germany, which is a very challenging environment known for its shallow waters, high currents and continuously moving sandbanks. Despite the many challenges and intricacies of the campaign, we successfully identified and destroyed three explosive devices and are proud to have been involved in such an important project. We are delighted to have provided an efficient and safe service, with no incidents, which reflected our ability to always provide ‘safe, sound and swift’ solutions.”

Safety Equipment & Fire Protection

Ground-breaking welding operations on cracked gas pipeline 27 metres below the Java sea while pipeline remained live DCN International Diving and Marine Contractors recently developed and employed a unique method that made it possible to repair a crack in a 32-inch gas pipeline three times more cheaply than by installing a bypass. Engineers from the came up with a completely new application for an existing concept. Thanks to a number of innovative alterations, DCN was able to introduce the method in the Java Sea, where an extremely critical repair could be carried out on a live operational gas pipeline. For the client, the new method meant a saving of millions. DCN Director Wim Vriens talked about this remarkable example of underwater innovation.

www.sosmagazine.biz

At the end of last year, DCN was awarded the largest EPIC contract in the company’s history. The Indonesian state-owned company PGN (Perushaan Gas Negara), specialists in the transport and distribution of gas, awarded DCN the order to seal a tear in a seven year-old gas pipeline located on the bed of the Java Sea. The crack had been discovered in 2013, and temporarily sealed using a Plidco clamp. The gas that flows through the pipeline is delivered to the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta. Switching to another pipeline was not possible, so one of the requirements imposed by PGN was that throughout the repair, the gas supply had to be continued without interruption. In other words, the pipeline had to remain fully pressurised, or the 29 million residents of Greater Jakarta would have experienced considerable, long-term problems.

38

Hyperbaric centre To be able to meet this requirement, DCN proposed carrying out the welding work underwater, in dry conditions, through the use of what is known as a habitat. A habitat is a sealed working space that offers divers a safe and protected working environment, while on the sea bed. Others viewed the proposed alternatives with considerable scepticism, and instead opted for a far more costly and complex alternative that involved installing a bypass. “DCN was the only company that met the requirements imposed by PGN, with its repair proposal,” explained Wim Vriens. Because gas supplied to Jakarta is entirely dependent on this one pipeline, PGN demanded precise preparation of all

work, including facilitation of simulated test conditions. As Vriens continued: “The fact that we are the only diving company in the world that have our own complete hyperbaric centre was therefore a decisive factor in the awarding of the order. During the summer, here in Bergen op Zoom, we carried out a series of dry runs and tests. We endlessly simulated all the elementary welding tasks necessary to ensure the long-term success of the repair at our own location. The tests were in fact carried out by the same divers who would eventually be required to carry out the work at a depth of 27 metres in the Java Sea, under considerable pressure. After the extensive testing programme, all the risks had been identified, minimised and managed.” Logistics The implementation of the project itself also called for a carefully planned logistic organisation. The first containers of equipment were shipped to Singapore at the start of July, including the complete saturation diving system and the habitat with suction anchors (piles). The final batch of welding equipment and the pre-heat induction cables developed and produced specially for the project were finally sent out by airfreight at the end of July. Applying power to these cables after wrapping them around the pipeline, generates the necessary heat to preheat the pipeline to 70 degrees, before a start can be made on the actual welding work. The hyperbaric centre at DCN clearly played a central role in developing these unique cables. Four sets In Singapore, all the equipment was then placed on the afterdeck of the vessel Normand Baltic, chartered for the work by DCN. The Norwegian DP2 vessel subsequently sailed to the island of Batam at the start of September, to collect the sleeves that were also specially produced for this project. The sleeves are the definitive outer coating that had to be welded tightly around the pipeline, as a sort of second skin. In line with the specifications, four sets of sleeves were produced; one set for test welding, one for simulating handling in the habitat, one for welding onto the cracked torn pipeline and one spare set. The same requirements applied to the gas containment clamps that first had to be placed over the existing Plidco clamp on the pipeline. Installation In preparation for the offshore work 30 kilometres off the coast, a multi beam survey

of the entire environment was first carried out. After studying the recordings, a start was made on installing the 5 six-metre long piles in the seabed made up of silt and clay. The first pile was used as a trial, in order to determine the required suction force, and to calculate the theoretical load-bearing capacity. The habitat subsequently had to be placed on the remaining four piles. To ensure installation of the piles within a tolerance of just 20 cm, a complete location-finding system was placed on the pipeline, using acoustic, underwater beacons. These made it possible to produce a threedimensional chart of the underwater situation. Safety was the first priority; we had to avoid coming into contact with the pipeline so as not the cause the crack to spread further. The placement of the habitat with its diving bell, which would serve as a safe haven throughout the project for the nine saturation divers, went without a hitch. “This was certainly one of the most critical moments of the project, and we were greatly relieved when the habitat was put in place right first time,” admitted Wim Vriens. Following the hermetic sealing and purging of the habitat to lower the water level, the first gas containment barrier – a sort of safety clamp – was mounted on the pipeline, followed by the lower and upper sleeve. The divers were then able to start on the demanding welding process while the gas continued to be pumped through the pipeline. Over a period of ten days, welding was carried out uninterrupted, while the welded layers underwent continuous ultrasonic testing. Finally, the repaired section of the pipeline was fitted with an anti-corrosion wrapping. The entire repair project was successfully concluded by mid-October, well within the agreed timeframe, on budget, without any additional work being required and without a single personal injury. A remarkable performance that was closely monitored by the entire subsea world. Wim Vriens concluded: “What DCN has demonstrated with this project is the company’s innovative attitude that enables us to tackle complex projects with simple solutions. In coming up with those solutions, we are clearly willing to think out of the box. Thanks to this creative approach, we are able to break out of existing patterns, and deal with problems and dilemmas in an entirely new way. We come up with solutions that others set aside as unworkable. This project is incontrovertible proof of that ability.”

Tayport company to feature in documentary after inventing ‘bomb listener’ technology - designed to help protect Malaysian coral reefs

Tayport-based St Andrews Instrumentation, pioneers in real-time autonomous acoustic detection, designed and built a specially commissioned ‘bomb listener’ at the request of one of the UK’s leading conservation bodies, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), to help put a stop to the decades-old practice taking place in marine parks across South-East Asia. The company was first approached around two years ago by MCS, which was looking for technology to help stop the fishermen who were causing the damage. SA Instrumentation

went on to design a bespoke product using three of its Decimus® systems working together to collate the bomb noise in almost real time. A compass was also built into the equipment, allowing enforcement rangers at the marine park to identify the location of the bomb. After hearing about the technology and the project, independent film maker HonYuen Leong last year successfully entered a Malaysia-wide competition, sponsored by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, in a bid to win a grant to develop a documentary. However, while the Decimus® system will be a key feature of her programme, she is currently in the process of trying to raise additional funds through crowdfunding to come to Scotland to film the SA Instrumentation team, which comprises Operations Manager Richard

Baggaley, Systems Engineer Graham Weatherup, Senior Systems Engineer Angus Aitken and Product Development Engineer Aaron Jones.

Changing the face of global safety training In high hazard environments, such as the oil and gas industry, safety is always the highest priority. Non-technical skills such as decision making, stress management and situation awareness are crucial to that safety culture, and assessing competency and investigating incidents to capture the human factor aspects can shed light on what has contributed to the event.

To broaden the scope of safety training that PFC can deliver globally, we recently launched a unique, portable version of our simulator. The only one of its kind, this advanced version resembles our main Aberdeen-based simulator and includes a custom designed portable generator control panel and touch screen technology.

Whilst a previous software-based version existed, this new technology offers the user a hands-on experience when controlling the generation system on the simulator, and provides a far more realistic interaction whilst replicating the way in which electrical systems are controlled on modern installations.

Our unique, high fidelity power distribution simulator addresses the need for a realistic training system, and plays a fundamental role in our training portfolios. Developed in-house and in response to market requirements, the simulator replicates the power distribution system on both offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities.

At a time when the industry’s focus is shifting from the North Sea, it is vital that we can deliver the best possible electrical safety training anywhere in the world. The advanced portable simulator has already been utilised for several projects in Angola and our ability to use simulatorbased exercises ensures our training courses

When developing products for Zone 1 / 21 and Division 1 hazardous areas, where explosive gas or dust may be present, a simple “protective case” approach is a major risk to the site since it cannot prevent an explosion under all conditions, such as when the product develops a fault -a key requirement for mobile devices used in these areas. This is why ecom has worked collaboratively with Samsung to develop the World’s first intrinsically safe tablet, which is completely safe for use in Zone 1 / 21 and Division 1 hazardous areas. Design & engineering breakthrough Created from state-of-the-art engineering combined with years of practical experience, ecom’s Tab-Ex® 01 – based on the Samsung GALAXY Tab Active, has now been independently certified for use in Zone 1 / 21 and Division 1 hazardous areas. With several new patents protecting ground breaking methods and a new evolutionary approach, the ultra rugged Tab-Ex® 01 brings a wide range of

applications and new customer focused solutions into Zone 1 / 21 and Division 1 areas for the first time.

Complementing ecom’s existing Zone 2 / Division 2 (Z2/D2) Tab-Ex® and rugged tablets, this latest Z1/21 / D1 Tab-Ex® enables customers to extend current solutions into Z1/21 / D1 hazardous areas with no software changes – helping to shorten deployment times and reduce cost/risk.

www.sosmagazine.biz

And, similar to our Z2/D2 Tab-Ex®, ecom’s Z1/21 / D1 Tab-Ex® combines ATEX, IECEx and NEC certifications on one device, making it safer and easier to manage Tab-Ex® deployments at different locations around the world.

Paradigm shift ecom’s Tab‐Ex® series, leveraging Samsung´s know-how, triggers

a paradigm shift in the way mobile workers work and interact with each other, their remote experts, and the backend systems even under abnormal conditions. This way of working brings with it the opportunity for improved decision making, improved mobile worker collaboration, and new levels of efficiency and collected data quality related to work tasks performed in hazardous areas.

Operating on Android, the Tab‐Ex® can support multiple mobile worker roles performing a range of applications, including Asset Surveys, Material Tracking, Operator Rounds, Inspection and Maintenance. The 8“ screen enables the wide and still growing range of applications to become mobile in hazardous areas, allowing workers to view and interact with SCADA/DCS systems, enterprise systems (SAP, Maximo, s.o.), projectmanagment systems and computer aided design systems, when they are moving around the hazardous area. As cost-effective 4G/LTE networks become accessible in the field and offshore, real-time notification of plant changes and abnormalities to team leaders in the field now becomes possible with Tab-Ex®, providing the ability to remotely view and interrogate notification and root cause data in real‐time to quickly resolve the issue. Built-in cameras (optional) combined with wireless connectivity allows equipment defects to be captured as inspection and maintenance work is executed. This makes them instantly visible to those who need to diagnose the issue and determine the follow‐on actions. Forms, documents, drawings and reports that are typically too large for the screen of a PDA or Smartphone, can be displayed on Tab‐Ex® without the need for continuous scrolling. Connectivity – fast and flexible As private 4G/LTE wireless connectivity is increasingly adopted within hazardous areas, Tab‐Ex® ensures access is fast and seamless – enabling users to quickly access the information needed to perform the task at hand. And, for sites with WiFi access or no wireless access, TabEx provides the flexibility to meet your needs ‐ preventing costly infrastructure updates. Central to ecom´s Mobile Worker concept, the latest Bluetooth standards are also supported by Tab‐Ex®, allowing real‐time connectivity to both Bluetooth SmartReady Low Energy 4.0 (BLE) devices as well as older legacy Bluetooth devices. This allows the mobile worker to benefit from expanded Tab-Ex® capabilities such as data collection and measuring/monitoring devices, headsets, AutoID, and Bluetooth Beacons for localization.

Top scientists show that environmental benefits of shale gas have been underestimated

Methane, the main component of natural gas, has a high greenhouse potential, and opponents of shale gas production argue that even if one or two percent of the gas leaks, the advantage of natural gas over coal would be negated. Elizabeth and Richard Muller’s new research now shows this estimate is incorrect: • Over a 100 year time span, an implausible 12% of the produced natural gas used today would have to leak in order to negate an advantage over coal.

• The best current estimates for the average leakage across the whole supply chain are below 3%; even at 3% leakage natural gas would produce less than half the warming of coal averaged over the 100 years following emission. • Half this 100 year average comes from the first 10 years; three-quarters from the first 20 years; the warming at 100 years is almost entirely from the (relatively low) CO2 produced from burned methane, not from the leaked methane itself. • An additional reason to produce electric power from natural gas is that the legacy advantage of natural gas is enormous; after 100 years, only 0.03% of leaked gas remains in the atmosphere, compared to 36% for remnant carbon dioxide. Elizabeth and Richard Muller comment: “The concerns over fugitive methane is based on the following true but easily misinterpreted facts about methane:

• Methane, when released to the atmosphere, has Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 86 over a 20 year period. This means that methane is 86 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, pound for pound, averaged over the 20 years following the emission. • Methane leakage has been observed in range 6.2% to 11.7% based on measurements taken of the air above some drilling areas.

Hazardous Area

In a new report ‘The Facts About Fugitive Methane’, published by the Centre for Policy Studies on Monday 26 October, Richard Muller, Professor of Physics at the University of California, reveals that previous estimates of methane leakage in shale gas production have been seriously over-estimated.

But the maths described above is incorrect, and as a result the conclusions are incorrect: • When comparing coal to methane for equal electric power, the 20-year global warming potential of methane compared to carbon dioxide is 11, not 86. • Legacy warming from fugitive methane is minuscule compared to that of carbon dioxide. • Average leakage today is far below dangerous levels.”

These low maintenance LED tube lights are also suitable for general lighting purposes and for use as machine lamps. Due to their slim design, the lamps are easy to install even in difficult-to-access locations.

In addition to ATEX and IECEx certificates for Zones 1/21 and 2/22, the 6036 LED tube lights feature various regional approvals for most of the major markets (EAC TR CU, Gazpromnadzor, UL do Brasil, GL). The versatility of the 6036 series is further enhanced by the choice of connection cables: while H07RN-F is the standard, users can choose from Thermflex, low-temperature, special offshore cables, or cables that are high voltage-proof up to 1kV.

“As well as being low maintenance, 6036 LED tube lights are also extremely energy efficient. Overall power consumption is around half that of conventional box-type units (specific power consumption per 100 lx is just 1.5 W/m²). Operating costs are therefore significantly reduced – realistic cost savings vary from 20% to more than 50%, depending on the relevant time frame and the specific solutions being compared.” Alan Mellows, Managing Director at R. STAHL Limited.

Balltec lifting solution instrumental in launch of Åsgard gas compression facility Balltec Engineered Solutions in conjunction with Aker Solutions and Statoil has successfully completed the design and manufacture of a unique lifting and handling solution that has played a key part in the installation of the world’s first underwater gas compression plant, Åsgard. Balltec’s ground breaking lifting technology is now helping to establish a fully functioning subsea gas production and processing system at a depth of 300 metres. The Balltec lifting solution was used for the deployment of five different subsea module designs of various differing weights and sizes. Balltec’s scope of work was to design a flexible connector solution able to pick up the modules and land them on the seabed. The connectors were designed as part of an engineered lift and were used to connect the modules and a lifting frame to accommodate the complex load parameters.

www.sosmagazine.biz

The module designers, Aker Solutions, chose Balltec to develop the lifting system based on the company’s experience and track record of engineering innovation in

44

heavy lift systems for deep-water projects. The contract with Aker Solutions was signed shortly after the project modules had been designed and it was apparent that a special lifting solution would be needed to deploy the modules. The module sizes varied, the largest being some 14.9 x 9.9 x 8.5 meters.

“When Aker Solutions approached Balltec to design a lifting solution, the module design parameters had already been set. This meant that our system had to be flexible enough to adapt to the existing designs but robust enough to cope with the extremely difficult load conditions.” Marco Teixeira, Balltec Technical Director. The Balltec lifting solution is part of the LiftLOK™ family of connectors and incorporates new design principles not previously seen in Balltec products. This version of the LiftLOK™, now DNV approved, is a purely mechanical system that does not require any manual or remote intervention during connection and is designed to be tolerant to substantial negative and side loads.

The total scope of work for Balltec was the design and supply of 58 male connectors and 12 female connectors that also included the design and manufacture of two custom test rigs. Following the successful execution of the initial 5 lifting systems, a close working relationship was developed with Aker Solutions and Statoil with Balltec also contracted to provide another new and completely different lifting solution for the final 6th module.

“Balltec successfully designed, manufactured and tested an entirely new lifting system within four months from receipt of order, meeting the client’s demanding technical and schedule requirements, including certification under the new DNV rules for lifting. We are now pleased to report that the LiftLOK™ system has been used and the modules are now installed subsea.” Russell Benson, Managing Director.

Exploring the subsea cable market

Thanks to the low oil price, the subsea sector is enduring a challenging period. Operators are being forced to venture into more remote and harsher locations, requiring top tier equipment to meet demanding and dynamic environments. Dynamic Design Most subsea cables designed and manufactured at Hydro Group’s Aberdeen, Scotland facility incorporate numerous specialist elements such as fibre optics, twisted pairs, triples or quads, Coaxial, VHF and high frequency RF, components. As subsea equipment is becoming more complex with data management and collection systems transferring significantly higher volumes of information at faster rates the Transmission Characteristics, Low Loss and Shielding requirements need to be addressed in the design and composition of the cables. Under Pressure Understanding the static and dynamic forces that will be applied allow the incorporation of features and components such as Vectran braids and cords for tensile strength in light

weight and more flexible applications and Contra Helical steel wire armouring packages where significantly higher mechanical forces will be experienced. Hydro Group recently invested in a new stateof-the-art hydrostatic pressure vessel, which offers a broader range of testing with a more accurate output. The 2.5 by 1.5 metre vessel has the capacity to pressure test large cable assemblies and equipment up to100 bar, simulating depths of 1000 metres below sea level. This complements the suite of existing pressure vessels that allow simulation of depths to 7000 metres of seawater. Advanced Armour Hydro Group services a global client base, with ocean environments varying significantly in different regions and therefore different risks to consider such as salinity, water temperatures and seabed conditions. As industry explores deeper sea depths, this affects the design and material selection of cables, with challenges such as UV stability, marine growth, microbial attack and even the burrowing Teredo Navalis Shipworm to be addressed. The combination of the above design factors and the fact that equipment demands are increasing rapidly is driving more customised solutions. In addition to the design approach employed and increased testing capabilities, Hydro Group has invested heavily in new machinery, significantly increasing and

improving in-house cable manufacturing capabilities, to compliment this rapidly evolving market. Hose Bundles To further support the needs of industry and in response to significant customer demand, Hydro Group combined expertise to develop a new hydraulics hose product, offering lay-up and over-sheathing of hydraulic hoses for use in umbilical, topside, well intervention projects in the oil and gas industry and any deepwater applications or where there is a high differential pressure between the external and internal pressure of the hose.

Product Spotlight

Sales Director, Graham Wilkie of Hydro Group plc, a global design and manufacturer of underwater cables and connectors for subsea, topside and harsh environment applications, details how they have stayed ahead in the rapidly changing subsea cable market.

The bundled hoses, which are available in ¼” to 2” size from Hydro Cable Systems, a Hydro Group company, integrate hydraulic components with electrical and fibre optic cables, resulting in a more compact and easier to handle assembly. Hydro Group has seen significant investment in equipment, facilities and training, enabling the company to expand capability and offer technical skill and resource to respond to significantly varying demands from our customer’s applications. The Hydro Group team are open to exploring solutions that are technically challenging, in tight timescales and within budget. Continuous product development and investment in opening up new markets has enabled the Group to maintain momentum whilst the uncertainty in the oil and gas market has impacted subsea developments.

Rotork improves reliability of HVAC system on giant FPSO Operating in Angola’s Block 17 offshore oilfield, the giant Total CLOV FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) vessel relies on its HVAC system not only for the comfort and safety of crew members but also to provide a stable operating environment for PLCs and associated critical control equipment. The application demands precise accuracy to maintain air quality and ventilation in the many enclosed cabins, offices, sub-stations and PLC rooms contained inside the massive vessel. The temperature has to be accurately controlled and the air supply has to be constant, so when actuators were needed on the HVAC air handling units and cooling

water supply, Rotork CMA and CVA electric process control valve actuators were selected for their proven field performance. Working with the CLOV HVAC maintenance team, engineers from Rotork South Africa installed and commissioned the new actuators, which were supplied in accordance with the Total CLOV marine specification. Operating from the existing 4-20mA control signal, the actuators provide precise and responsive valve positional control and feedback, with repeatability and resolution at less than 0.1%. Following the installation, CLOV has reported that the HVAC is operating at 100% efficiency and there have been no failures. Rotork has a long association with Total’s offshore and onshore projects in Angola

through its South African company and its agent in Angola. More than 400 heavy duty Rotork CP and GP pneumatic actuators were supplied for installation in many areas of the CLOV vessel’s processing plant, including those parts designed to limit environmental impact by eliminating flaring under normal operating conditions, recovering heat from turbine exhaust and recovering vent gases. Rotork’s professional performance throughout the duration of that contract and contribution to the timely CLOV start-up was recognised with the letter of appreciation from the vessel’s constructors.

Marin’s Tophole Clearance solution Marin has launched a new dimension in deepwater excavation, recently completing Top Hole Clearance at Shell’s Mars B field, excavating 20,000t of sediment in 7 days. Marin’s Tophole Clearance solution offers an alternative to traditional riserless mud recovery (RMR) which has several advantages over this conventional method.

“The problem is that orthodox electro hydraulic systems are only useful for depths around 1,000m. Beyond this, the resistance from the

hydraulic hoses and increased hydrostatic pressure starts to have a detrimental effect on the amount of power received at the extraction package. As our tools are water driven we are able to overcome this. Our equipment is truly unrestricted by water depth.”

George Stroud, Marin CEO.

Marin uses its patented EVO technology for Top Hole Clearance and operated the EVO 250, (producing 25,000t of seawater thrust per hour) and the EVO 750, (producing 75,000t of seawater thrust per hour) on the Shell project. The EVO Jetprop is completely unrestricted by

water depth, has no cables or electrical umbilicals to power bulky pumps and is deployable by drill string or crane wire. “Our top hole clean up solution ensures for faster deployment as there is no down time waiting to unclog pumps or sort hoses. This leads to safety and cost reduction advantages as well as minimisation of environmental impacts,” explains Mr Stroud. Marin’s technology is purpose built for multiple applications. As well as Top Hole Clearance, the EVO Jetprop range can be used for the deburial of pipelines and other flexibles, unexploded ordinance, subsea manifolds and wreck excavations.
