Focus on Aberdeen region with independent energy consultancy - Adil
4
After forty years in the oil and gas industry, Aberdeen has become the Energy Capital of Europe. Home to more than a thousand businesses within the energy sector, the city is one of the most influential energy hubs in the world and a recognised centre of excellence for oilfield skills, knowledge and expertise.
“The idea that the UK’s North Sea oil fields have passed peak production seems to have done little to deter the major companies from investing in Aberdeen and a number of them have opened new offices or expanded existing operations in recent years,” said managing director James Paton.
Since the early oil boom of the 1970s this thriving economic powerhouse has fostered some of the most innovative and successful companies in the global oil and gas industry. Today, it houses an extensive portfolio of capabilities and a network of talent which is driving forward industry breakthroughs that are central to Scottish, UK and worldwide efforts to build a sustainable energy industry.
“As an organisation we have invested heavily in supporting infrastructure as the foundation to expand our company both in terms of our people and our capabilities in line with growing market needs. This has included strengthening the management team with senior appointments in our projects and operations teams, both of which play a key role in our strategy for 2014 and beyond.
One such company is leading independent energy consultancy ADIL. Increasing demand for ADIL’s specialist energy consultancy services has resulted in strong domestic growth figures for 2013 and positioned the company for the next stage in its international expansion strategy.
“Indeed the significant growth we saw in 2013 builds on our success story to date and is a clear indication of not just our strong track record in delivering high value niche services underpinned by technical expertise and innovation, but also of a growing demand in the marketplace.”
With 190 personnel in offices in Aberdeen and London, as well as teams in UK, Middle Eastern and Chinese sites, the company reported a 53% rise in revenue to £31million and a 20% increase in employee numbers in its latest results.
ADIL is currently providing field development services for projects with CAPEX in excess of £2.5bn. and is predicting continued growth in the coming years from the international market.
This steady growth will provide the platform for ADIL to expand its services in the production operations and software development sectors going forward, and extend its international reach with an initial focus on Africa and south-east Asia.
“We want to maintain a focus on our traditional business but develop new offerings to enable diversification as we look to build our presence in the global arena,” added Mr Paton.
“Very different to our traditional service offering, we recently developed and delivered our first fully bespoke, in-house business management system for an operator which will ensure a standard of business practice can be achieved across their organisation.

to support the smaller, independent oil operator’s activities around the globe.
“This type of diversification is typical of the growing interest we are seeing in the marketplace, particularly from the independent operators and I see our business solutions stream as a key component of our growth strategy going forward. “Looking to the future, the UK North Sea will remain a critical market for us but there are also significant opportunities in developing regions where experience, innovation and the ability to deliver high performance results are in demand. “In particular our London office is an increasingly important base for us as we look to grow and gain access to new international opportunities.”
“An integral part of our strategy is identifying and steering forward projects that will bring economic development value to our customers in the Aberdeen region and the wider UK Continental Shelf. In order to deliver this successfully however, you need to have the right people with the right experience on board. “In a tight labour market, that can be a challenge. We are fortunate in that most of our staff have between 20 and 30 years’ operator and international experience in the oil and gas industry and a proven track record in their fields.”
“Among the changing needs that we are seeing in the sector is a growing interest in business management systems, in particular

The skills issue isn’t the only influencing factor. As the oil and gas industry matures, so too does the size, scale and needs of the exploration and production companies operating in the field. With this evolution, however, comes opportunity.

Saltire Energy recognised for fastest-growing profit on Sunday Times league table Saltire Energy, a leading supplier of drilling tools to the offshore oil and gas industry, has secured a position on The Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 league table, in acknowledgment of the Group’s significant rise in profit figures over a three year period. The 15th Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100, which was published in the Sunday Times on 13 April, is an annual league table ranking 100 of Britain’s privatelyowned companies with the fastestgrowing profits. In 2013, Saltire Energy reported a record turnover of £32.9million, an increase in over 50% from the previous year. The Group has experienced strong local and global growth following the expansion of its operations in the UK, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Norway. Mike Loggie, Chief Executive of Saltire Energy, said: “The Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 is highly-regarded within the business community. Securing a spot on this year’s league table is an enormous achievement for us. “Saltire Energy was listed on the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 ‘Ones to Watch’ table last year - we have since grown the company by investing back into
the business, which has allowed us to accelerate our capabilities and increase our global presence. “As a result of our rapid growth we are outgrowing our current Aberdeen headquarters. A £5million investment has allowed us to build a new facility and consolidate our operations within one location. We also have plans to open a new base in Thailand, strengthening the Group’s presence in the Asia Pacific region and enhancing our client offering in the area. “Scottish businesses have a strong presence on the list this year which is highly-encouraging for development in the region. I am confident that we will build on this success in the future and drive our business growth forward.” The Profit Track 100 league table is sponsored by International accountancy network, BDO, and compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events company. The league table ranks 100 privatelyowned, British companies with the fastestgrowing sales over a three year period. Published within The Sunday Times, it has acknowledged top performing private companies for the past 15 years.
The companies featured on the league table will come together in June at a prestigious black tie awards dinner at The Savoy, London. Six awards for excellence will be presented during the event to the companies that merit special recognition. The awards include the Best Brand, Customer Service, Value Creating, Best Management Team, Ones to Recognise and Fastest-Growing Company.

Available in quarter-turn, rotary and linear versions, robust Rotork CMA actuators perform numerous process control valve, metering pump and damper applications. Single-phase or DC electrical power is all that is required for simplified installation and control valve actuation in safe or hazardous areas. Explosionproof certification to international standards is available. The latest ‘Performance Plus’ development introduces a user selectable increased shut-off torque/thrust option. Developed in response to industry feedback, this option enables a more tailored and costeffective sizing regime to be applied to both the modulating and tight shut-off demands of the control valve. A tight shut-off is often required as part of the valve duty, leading to potential over-sizing of the actuator for mid-travel modulating operations. The increased torque/thrust option is selected and configured during
the actuator set-up programme, as part of a logical menu-driven process using an internal electronic LCD display and pushbuttons. A new model size has also been introduced to the rotary CMA design, creating a range that is suitable for virtually all process control applications. Upgrades to internal electronics and HMI enhancements complete the list of improvements across the range. For additional functionality, all rotary CMA actuators have output speeds that are adjustable down to 50% of full speed, in 10% increments.
Manual operation is available as standard whilst optional extras include local pushbuttons and selector switch, digital position indicator and network compatibility with Rotork Pakscan, HART®, Profibus®, Modbus® and Foundation Fieldbus®

UAE-based global marine solutions provider, Marsol International and chemical engineering specialist Aubin Group has announced a partnership agreement to provide an ‘industry first’ total pigging solution for non-piggable pipelines. Marsol and Aubin delivered a solution to achieve a world’s first by completing the successful displacement of pipeline preservation fluid in three, 48 inch pipelines using sales oil providing an extremely cost effective, environmentallyfriendly solution. This saved a client in excess of $3million. Following successful field trials, the two firms have joined expertise to provide the Middle East, Far East and African markets with a complete product and engineering solution where conventional pigging is not applicable. The solution is also well suited to pigging or cleaning pipe infrastructure which contains 90 degree bends and/or T-pieces Marsol men at work
that has varying internal diameters in the same configuration. The solution reduces the need to strip down, clean and reassemble components, and also reduces the potential for environmental damage. The partnership will enable Marsol and Aubin’s clients to benefit from Marsol’s asset management, marine services and pipeline operational engineering capabilities combined with Aubin’s pipeline pigging tool EVO-Pig and pipeline cleaning ‘Pipeline Gels’. Mike Young, Managing Director, Marsol International, said: “Marsol and Aubin have developed a relationship which is based on a technical solution rather than product supply. With Marsol’s onsite engineering and technical ability, and Aubin’s innovative product development in the area of Pipeline Gels and Pigging, we are in a very strong position to offer our clients a cost and time saving solution. We are looking forward to expanding the offering to new and existing clients who have previously been unable to find an effective Pigging solution in the market.” Raymond Stirton, Well Services and Pipelines Director, Aubin Group, said: “Aubin’s Pipelines division is achieving
a strong presence in the Middle East and this partnership is the logical step which allows us to offer clients in the region an industry-first solution. Passion for Scotland proves a blessing for Caiman Software A passion for Scotland led to software specialist Ivar Blessing moving from his Holland homeland to the North-east where he is successfully applying his skills to heavy-regulated industries such as oil and gas. After marrying wife, Katherine, who hails from the United States, the pair decided to set up home in Angus after Ivar landed a job with Aberdeen-headquartered Caiman Software, an independent company specialising in bespoke software solutions for quality and business management. “We both love Scotland and so decided to move here,” said Ivar, 33. “When we thought about where we wanted to live, Aberdeen came high up and then I was fortunate to be offered a job with Caiman Software as a senior software developer. “It was a really good job interview and I just clicked right away with the team at Caiman Software which, through focusing on integrated quality and business management systems, is helping companies to significantly improve their business efficiency and achieve industry standards such as ISO accreditation. “It’s a really interesting challenge and through the clients that I’ve been working with, I’ve learned a lot about oil and gas which is fascinating. We have an oil and gas industry in Holland but it’s nothing on the scale of what Aberdeen has.”

an impressive track record for developing tailor-made software solutions. “No matter the nature of the business or industry they’re in, the key to developing the right software is to understand exactly what the needs of the end user are. Everyone has a smartphone and a laptop at home, and everyone in business wants to be able to access information wherever they are so that they can make quick and informed decisions. “Caiman has developed a fully-integrated business and quality management system, Caiman IQ, which encompasses every aspect of a business and can be used both on and offline. It is also a more sustainable and cost effective solution because it can be implemented on existing hardware or in the cloud and its modularity means it can be scaled with business growth. “It’s a really satisfying job and I like the interaction with clients especially when they see the results of how the software can quickly help improve their business operations. Caiman has a strong, vibrant team who are hands-on and can quickly adapt which gives the company a real competitive edge.” Originally from Purmerend, near Amsterdam, Ivar studied Information and Communication Technology before embarking on his career at 18 when he started working for a specialist recruitment company as a web designer. “I started my career during the dot com bubble in the Nineties but then the bubble burst and people realised there was the harder side of the business. Ivar studied Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam and after graduating, he went on to work for an e-commerce company where he became involved in web development. He then went into business with a friend and was involved in developing a website for the heavy-load transport industry by designing a route calculator whereby drivers and businesses could work out the best travel route including maximum load weights, pin pointing tunnels to avoid and highlighting areas where permits may be required. “I like the challenges involved in working for different businesses
and industries in different environments. You have to be able to quickly relate and adjust to their needs.” Before joining Caiman, Ivar worked for a hyperlocal news website company where he was the only software developer until the company grew within three years to more than 120 employees. He then worked for an e-commerce company specialising in all-encompassing websites for businesses such as book shops and opticians before getting married and deciding to move to Scotland.

I’m really fortunate to have got a job at Caiman Software which is a growing business and it’s great to be a part of that.”

Novel Passive Fire Shelters enhance safety management for offshore gas project Three groundbreaking passive fire shelters designed to protect the vital control electronics of automatic emergency shutdown and fire suppression systems on offshore gas production platforms in the Arabian Gulf are being supplied by the outdoor enclosure specialist Intertec. Fabricated using lightweight composite GRP (glass reinforced polyester) materials, the shelters employ patented techniques to resist fire for two hours – allowing critical electronic safety equipment to remain operational.
technologies used in this area, such as fire safe buildings constructed from concrete or steel and covered with fire resistant ceramic tiles, or conventional shelters covered with intumescent materials – which can hinder access.
Although there are currently no standards for this application area that cover containment temperatures, Intertec designs, manufactures and tests its fire shelters to a rigorous proprietary specification which demands that their internal temperature must remain below 60 degrees C throughout the rated protection time.
Until now, almost all of the fire resistant enclosures Intertec has produced have been in the form of smaller cabinets designed to protect specific critical process control elements of refineries, petrochemical plants and offshore platforms - typically electromechanical emergency shutdown (ESD) valves and actuators. This is the first time that fire shelters have been specified for the even more demanding role of protecting heatsensitive control system electronics from the direct and indirect effects of fire.
The novel shelters are also capable of withstanding both conventional and more severe hydrocarbon fires. All three fire shelters are floor-mounted ‘walk-in’ models of a style more usually associated with process analyzer shelters and are the largest that Intertec has produced to date. They represent a major advance over many current fire protection
The weight of the composite GRP materials that Intertec uses is about 25 percent that of steel – for a similar strength – and only 10 percent that of concrete, making it especially suitable for offshore applications.
Intertec produces all its fire shelters using a proprietary composite construction technique, comprising one or more layers of fire-resistant mineral wool insulation ‘sandwiched’ between sheets
of special-grade GRP. The overall design of the shelters is patented. By changing manufacturing parameters such as the thickness of the GRP walls and the number and type of insulation layers that they contain, the company is able to tailor the material’s composition to provide specific levels of fire resistance. Intertec’s range of fire shelters includes two product families that are designed to keep contained equipment below a specific temperature – usually 60 degrees C – for a defined amount of time in the event of an external fire. The company’s standard fire shelters are designed to withstand the type of relatively slow-burning fires that can occur in business buildings, which typically take about 30 minutes to reach 800 degrees C (1,472 F) and about three hours to attain their maximum of 1,100 C (2,012 F). The designs are verified against the time-temperature curve defined in ISO 834 – which is used in many fire protection standards – and are available with protection times from 30 to 120 minutes. For more demanding applications, Intertec’s ‘1709’ fire shelters are designed to withstand hydrocarbon fires that can reach 1,103 degrees C (2,000 F) within the first five minutes.
The fire shelters that Intertec is supplying for this Middle East offshore gas project are designed to withstand fire for 120 minutes, to afford maximum protection to the control electronics of a platform’s ESD and fire suppression systems under all foreseeable circumstances. A large outward-opening door provides personnel with unfettered access for routine equipment inspection and maintenance. For air conditioning and VSpringsAd 25/9/06 ventilation purposes, the 20:13 shelters Page are 1
equipped with special fire-resistant air transfer grilles containing intumescent damper slats, that are expressly designed for use in harsh environments. Under normal conditions the grilles allow an unrestricted flow of air into and out of the shelter. However, in the event of a fire, the heat activates the intumescent material which then creates a very durable and insulating barrier against the ingress of flames and hot gases. Designers of safety systems for offshore platforms face conflicting requirements when choosing the best form of fire protection. The systems’ control electronics need to be adequately insulated, but must also be readily accessible for routine testing and maintenance. The shelter itself needs to have a long service life, demanding structural robustness and high corrosion resistance, yet it must weigh as little as possible.
passive and require no electrical power or other services for its fire protection capabilities. The composite GRP materials that Intertec uses for its fire shelters meets all these requirements. GRP has a similar strength to stainless steel but is some 75 percent lighter, as well as being an electrical insulator with very low thermal conductivity. It is inherently inert and provides exceptional long term resistance to corrosion from salt or other aggressive chemicals that might be present in the local atmosphere, such as sulphuric acid. The outer surfaces are protected against weathering effects and abrasion by a thick UV-resistant gel coat.
News & Products
The design of the shelters is verified against the ‘rapid-rise’ time-temperature curve that is used in the ANSI/UL 1709 standard, but with a much more stringent requirement that the internal temperature must not exceed 60 degrees C. This design criterion affords considerably greater protection against severe fires than the 1709 standard, which only covers the protection of structural steel and has a permissible temperature of 550 degrees C for the specified protection time.
According to Martin Hess of Intertec, “Our ability to manufacture fire-resistant enclosures, cabinets and shelters and to tailor their dimensions – as well as other specification properties like thermal insulation, explosion protection, IP rating, extreme storm rating and blast proofing – is opening up new markets in the offshore Belleville125x86Ad 16:50 Page 1 Ideally the shelter should also be entirely and10/3/08 onshore sector.”

Training Solutions in Cirencester has challenged them with intense practical and theory examination.
The first group of apprentices in CHC Helicopter’s scheme to develop 35 new, world-class engineers over the next three to five years arrive in Aberdeen this week.
“Now I’m through the first stage, I’m excited that I can begin to learn from CHC’s maintenance team, understand how maintenance is managed in a major helicopter operation, and learn more about the oil and gas industry of which CHC is a part,” she said.
The week-long induction to CHC’s UK North Sea operations includes hands-on experience for the apprentices working under the guidance of CHC’s highly experienced aircraft engineers. Apprentices will also be introduced to CHC’s integrated safety management system and safety culture, and get an overview of the North Sea oil and gas players who are CHC’s customers. The apprentices come to the Granite City following eight months training in a specialist facility. CHC launched the scheme in September 2013 and received interest from more than 400 applicants. One of the apprentices, Rosie Clarkson, 21, said that the eight months of study with Resource Group Aviation Technical

C-Kore jumper & umbilical monitoring device The Zetechtics C-Kore is a Subsea (rechargeable) battery powered electronics package, fully integrated into the dummy plug normally fitted to the electrical connectors of subsea termination heads and umbilical / jumper assemblies.
As subsea field umbilical arrays grow ever more complex the integrity of the components becomes increasingly critical. It is paramount that subsea electrical arrays are made up of umbilical cables & connectors that are known to be good. Unfortunately it is all too easy for jumper assemblies to be damaged in transit between factory floor and sea floor. Once the array is fully assembled and in place on the sea bed then fault finding becomes highly problematic and test via disconnection runs the very real risk of introducing further faults.
When Subsea, the C-Kore can detect the arrival of any ROV (via light source or proximity sensors), and when activated, installation resistance, continuity and capacitance (cable length) are measured automatically.
Possible faults could include; • • • • • • • •
Manufacturing Errors & Design Flaws Transit Damage via Incident or Accident Incorrect Installation or Load Out Mechanical Damage (impact, vibration, crush, cut, abrasion, etc.) Hydrostatic Effects Water Leak or Pin Hole ROV Manipulator Damage Sea floor movement
Subsea Equipment
C-Kore is designed to provide assurance to field installation engineers that their umbilical systems will meet the client requirements by checking electrical integrity immediately prior to connector make-up.
Tests are performed between all / any required electrical cores and the surrounding sea water. Lowest measured values are shown on the full colour OLED display; these values can be used to determine if any damage has occurred to the subsea component. The operator then makes up the connection in the normal way and can be sure that known good components are being assembled at every point in the process.

HATLAPA- Triplex offshore deck machinery package caters to your needs The demand for more comprehensive and extensive machinery packages has increased over the years within the marine industry. In order to respond to this demand, the marine equipment manufacturer HATLAPA and its daughter company Triplex AS have created a deck machinery package aimed specifically at vessels which operate in the demanding conditions in the offshore industry. HATLAPA is known for its high quality and reliable marine equipment in all areas of shipbuilding and now together with Triplex, the two companies are able to offer specific solutions which combine the expertise within the companies. The two companies worked together already prior to the purchase of Triplex in 2011. The history of the two companies extends back to 1990s and a cooperation of supplying winches and net handling systems to the Chilean fishing industry. The compatibility of the two companies is even more evident in recent times The Offshore Package combines the expertise of the companies into one, fully compatible and customizable package. The offshore specific equipment from both companies is now a collective list of 23 elements that can be tailored to a specific package depending on the requirements of the customer.
HATLAPA is known for their range of winches and especially the AHT winches, which are available in low or high pressure hydraulic drives to suit the customers’ needs with power, as well as size wise in single, double or even triple waterfall designs. The Combined Anchor-Mooring and Mooring winches, secondary winches as well as the Research Winches are also supplied fully customized if requested and have stood the test of time and are known for their durability and reliability in extreme conditions.
Triplex AS has been working in the offshore sector for centuries and their cranes are a testament to the company’s expertise within the fishery and offshore sector. In order to branch out more into the offshore sector, Triplex had designed a variety of specialist Multi Deck Handlers.
All winches are fully customizable and have a variety of additional extras to make the operating of the winches safer, as well as increase the lifespan of the equipment. Additional equipment such as chain stoppers and capstans for the winches can now be incorporated into the package. A variety of servicing plans are also available.
• Lifting and pulling capacities of 42t and 30t over the whole deck
The Multi Deck Handlers can be divided into two categories, for AHT vessels and for PSVs.
The AHT MDH package includes:
• Anchor handling operations performed with remote control • Camera systems and floodlights • Heavy capacity lifting manipulator crane • Separate winch with 22t lifting capacity • Manipulator designed for “fine” operations • Separate wire clamp
The MDH for the PSVs include • 20t lifting capacity
www.sosmagazine.biz
• Loading and offloading containers in port

• Moving and storing containers offshore • Tandem lifts of pipes and large items
As safety in any situation is imperative, especially in rough or extreme conditions, the package also includes a variety of safety options. For the HATLAPA winches, a quick release option called SLIPSAFE is incorporated, this means that there is no claw clutch and the chain can be released through a slipping clutch with minimum break force.
Triplex also offers a variety of safety measurements taking into consideration that anchor and other chains on the deck can cause major safety hazards. The best know safety measure are the Shark Jaws, this was invented by Triplex in 1983 and is a unique way of handling chains and wires. This option automatically positions the chain or wire in the right way on deck and allows for a more secure way of handling on-deck chains and ropes. Additional guiding tools are guide pins, stop pins, wire clamps, rope friction stoppers, tensioners and tractioners.
A new addition to the safety equipment offered by Triplex is a Load Measurement System (LMS). This system is incorporated into the Shark Jaws and it measures the active load which is displayed on a monitor on the Bridge. The system will also be able to give out an alarm, if the load is about to, or is exceeding the defined safety perimeters. The LMS can also be used to unwind and untangle chains on deck. The operator is able to connect the chain from the winch to the Shark Jaw and thus eliminate any spin and make for a safer operating environment.
Winching & Lifting
Both packages can be enhanced with a variety of additional equipment such as wires, buoys, clamps and anchors.
As household name in the Norwegian market, Triplex has recently secured a contract from BOA Offshore. The order entails a Tripelx MDH 42, as well as Shark Jaws, Vertical Guide Pins and a Spooling Block. Offshore Sales Manager Even Kippernes is excited about the cooperation: “This is the ultimate deck equipment for anchor handlers. The Triplex MDH can lift, move and park heavy anchors up to 42 tons and pull heavy chains and grappling hooks weighting up to 30 tons. The delivery for this order was scheduled for the beginning of 2014.

Oil & Gas apprenticeship marks 15th anniversary milestone THE oil and gas industry is marking Scottish Apprenticeship Week by celebrating the 15th anniversary of one of the most successful youth training schemes in the country. Past and present apprentices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Falkirk will join forces today (May 19th) as the industry’s official technician training scheme reaches the significant milestone in its history. Managed by OPITO, the skills organisation for oil and gas, operators and major contractors have invested more than £120million into the programme since it was established. Now backed by more than 15 companies it is one of the biggest industry-led MA programmes of its kind in the UK.

Around 100 trainee positions are available annually on the UK Upstream Oil and Gas Industry Technician Training scheme which boasts one of the highest achievement rates at 93%, compared to the national average of around 65%.

Sinéad Watson, a global HSE performance analyst with TAQA, was aged 18 and the only female on the very first intake of apprentices in 1999. Today she met with youngsters on the current programme as they underwent their training at ASET in Aberdeen. “I didn’t know much about working offshore when I was at school – at that time careers advisers never pushed the oil and gas industry and I had no idea what it entailed,” she said. “For some people university is the way to go, but doing the modern apprenticeship let me see the end game all the way. There’s no right or wrong way to get into the industry, but this opportunity gave me the on-the-job experience I needed and I learned from the best. “Once you are on the scheme you’re not competing to get a job, it’s all part of your training. After four years I had the skills and knowledge I needed to stand on my own two feet and I was able progress up the ranks.
Owen Buchan, John McDonald and Sinéad Watson
“Fifteen years on there is a much greater push for young people to join oil and gas and OPITO is attracting brighter talents every year. OPITO shows that it’s not just traditional apprenticeships on offer out there – this particular one can take you almost anywhere in the world and there are plenty of routes you can end up taking.” Owen Buchan was just 16-years-old when he was accepted onto the apprenticeship scheme. After two years studying the electrical engineering course, he is due to complete his two years’ on-the-job training with Apache later this month. “Working in oil and gas is even better than I thought it would be. I like being able to come home at the end of a two weeks shift and knowing I’ve achieved a lot in the time I’ve been away,” he said. “I wouldn’t be where I am now without the apprenticeship. I’m about to enter an industry where I know what I’m doing and have had the right training to be able to stand on my own two feet.
Managed by OPITO, the skills organisation for oil and gas, in partnership with the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), more than 1,400 young people have entered the industry since the scheme’s formation, creating a grassroots solution to the industry-wide skills shortage. John McDonald, UK managing director of OPITO, said: “Apprenticeship programmes are an excellent example of how an industry can proactively tackle its skills issues. Oil and gas is the UK’s largest industrial investor, contributing billions to the economy and employing more than 440,000 people. The recruitment and training of technicians is critical to developing and retaining the workforce
we need to continue to take on the world’s toughest energy challenges. “We receive thousands of applications annually from young people keen to be part of the industry journey. The qualifications they gain are recognised internationally so the apprentices have the skills required to work anywhere in the world and, as such, are highly sought after by employers. “This year, as we celebrate the 15th anniversary, it is fantastic to look back at what has been achieved to date and how the programme has grown into one of the most successful in the UK.” OPITO’s apprenticeship scheme offers a range of disciplines including process operations, electrical, instrument and control maintenance.
Split into two phases, the programme sees students take part in a 21 month full time course at one of the industry-appointed colleges in Aberdeen, Forth Valley or Edinburgh, before embarking on a two year worksite placement. “As the skills organisation for oil and gas, we are keen to ensure that future generations of workers are aware of the opportunities in the sector and we believe that it is critical that industry plays a role in maintaining students’ levels of interest in the sector from a young age,” added Mr McDonald.
Training & Certification
“An apprenticeship gives you a foot in the door in a competitive industry and helps you meet the right people. I can’t think of any better way to get ahead.”
“We’re running a raft of initiatives that are geared to attracting the future oil and gas workforce, including working with schools and encourage the uptake of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects, so school leavers are equipped with the basic skills required to enter the industry.”

Training & Certification
The Underwater Centre ‘bolts’ on new course Leading subsea training and trials facility, The Underwater Centre, has added a new course to its commercial air diving (CAD) offering, in response to the needs identified by industry. The ‘Introduction to Bolt Tensioning’ course will make an important and strong addition to the students’ CVs, furthering the range of tools and skills training they experience while on courses. The course, which will be included in all the diving packages – Premium, Construction and Standard – has been made possible by the donation of equipment by The Mechanical Services Department of Stork, highlighting that the subsea industry recognises the importance of giving students the right training for the job. ‘Introduction to Bolt Tensioning’ provides students with the knowledge and understanding of working with and using bolt tensioning equipment, which they can then use in their job – whether on the surface or underwater. Diving contractors and subsea operators need well trained and competent subsea personnel; the courses at the Centre are designed to ensure that when students qualify as commercial divers they are effective in their role and able to gain competency on the job as quickly as possible. Steve Ham, The Underwater Centre’s General Manager, said: “The courses we deliver at the Centre have been tailored to meet industry needs and this addition to the commercial diving courses is a perfect example of this. “Through constant collaboration and support with organisations in the sector, we are able to provide the skills required when our graduates go into employment. With the help of Alan Melia, formerly of Stork, we were able to develop the ‘Introduction to Bolt Tensioning course’. “The training courses we provide are constantly evolving as the industry evolves and requires new skills of its workforce; this latest addition will hopefully go some way to address these needs.”

Chris Barratt, Senior Mechanical Instructor of Stork, said “At the Stork Centre of Excellence for Mechanical Training in Aberdeen, we understand the oil and gas industry is prone to change, and so must the training and competency of individuals in order to execute approved methods safely in the field.

“As one of the leading training suppliers for industry approved training courses, Stork are delighted to be collaborating with The Underwater Centre in developing and integrating higher levels of Subsea (MJI) Mechanical Joint Integrity Courses for delegates to gain the necessary underpinning knowledge, before they set out in their commercial diving careers.”
Both the Premium Industry and Construction Career Packages provide training in the statutory components of the Health and Safety Executive’s commercial diving curriculum, as well as training in the use of subsea tools and practical exercises in carrying out construction and maintenance tasks underwater such as subsea welding and cutting, and rigging and slinging operations. The Premium Industry Package also includes training in subsea inspection techniques: a vital skill to have when working offshore. Diving provides an excellent career choice, with many benefits, including job satisfaction and good earning potential. 85% of the Centre’s students are working within three months of graduating, with some students landing a job within a week. The Underwater Centre is a purpose built training facility which incorporates an extensive pier complex including four dive stations, classrooms, workshops and decompression chambers. With accommodation and additional classrooms based at the landward end of the pier, The Underwater Centre is set up to provide its students with the skills and experience to succeed in their new careers, and continue providing the subsea industry with the workforce that it needs. Training & Certification
Personal Diving equipment inspection, repair & maintenance (IRM) is probably one of the most important jobs in commercial diving. The equipment is part of a divers “Life support” system and without proper care, use & maintenance, can at worst put the diver at risk, and at least, cost the employer money in breakdown time.

Hone-All takes a holistic approach to investment Hot on the heels of the arrival of a new 3m bed length CNC lathe, Hone-All Precision has announced further investment in its manufacturing capacity and is also enhancing how customers interact with the Leighton Buzzard precision sub-contractor. Hone-All is finalising the specifications for their new deep hole boring machine prior to its delivery in September. This will be their second machine with a 3 metre length capacity and further expands its existing boring capacity and will help reduce lead times to help meet growing customer demand. The ability to bore components of this length and up to 200 mm diameter is of significant interest to customers in the burgeoning oil and gas sector where Hone-All is a major supplier of machined components. “We are seeing a trend for longer, larger components and with the recent installation of our Tuscan 4 metre and the Harrison 3 metre bed length lathes we have the turning capacity to meet these new demands, so the next logical step was to bring in this increased boring capacity,” says Hone-All Precision Director, Andrea Rodney.
www.sosmagazine.biz
The installation of the new borer will require some realignment of existing facilities to maximise the workflow potential within the factory space. The smaller capacity borer will be relocated in Hone-All’s deep hole drilling section, where the company will make better use of existing BTA gundrill tooling and a transfer of knowledge will be facilitated between those involved in deep hole boring and gundrilling through a structured training programme. This training will ensure that skilled staff are always available to maintain production across the manufacturing processes.
48 38
Aerospace is also a growing market for Hone-All and a major increase in production quantities for a military helicopter component has seen the company invest in the refurbishment of their Jones & Shipman CNC honing machine with the installation of a new CNC control by OSAI and a complete rebuild of the hydraulic pack and controls by Kanflu. As a result of the work Hone-All has greater control over component accuracy and has also benefitted from increased production, which will be used to offset the doubling of demand for these components over the past six months, with the prediction of significant growth over the next three years. In addition to increasing manufacturing capacity Hone-All is also enhancing the interface between itself and existing and potential customers with the introduction of an App to complement its redesigned website. “The new App has been developed to provide customers with information on our services and capabilities. By simply rolling over the individual machining icons users of the App will be presented with machining tolerances, and other relevant information that will enable them to better understand what we can deliver for them. It will also include direct contact via e-mail or phone for those more detailed questions,” says Andrea Rodney.
The new Hone-All App is part of the company’s holistic approach to investment in its business
