Balancing costs in the subsea sector Industry Viewpoint
consideration on what CAPEX decisions are actually approved and 37% prioritising improved workflow/work processes. The supply chain in particular, can expect more pressure with 27% prioritising this as a measure to reduce costs. This is apparent in the subsea sector, which has always been challenged by high cost levels, complexity and low predictability of quality control requirements throughout the supply chain. Major efficiency and financial issues include the highly variable requirements by operators from field-to-field and associated quality assurance processes which are often customised on a project-specific basis. I’m hopeful the increased focus on cost control will lead to the industry grasping the opportunities in standardisation in both their tools and processes. In order to tackle these challenges head-on, a new ‘Standard for certification of subsea equipment and components’ has been launched by DNV GL. For operators, the aim is to reduce costs without sacrificing quality, innovation or safety. For suppliers, it will increase predictability and enable the strategic stocking of long-lead items. We have also set up a new subsea team in Aberdeen to assist our clients and customers across a wide spectrum of subsea specialisms. Experience has shown that the industry must continue to keep a clear focus on long-term activity to remain robust in different price environments.
Hari Vamadevan, DNV GL’s Regional Manager for UK and Sub Saharan Africa, explains that regardless of the turbulent nature of the oil price and its consequences, the subsea sector is buoyed to ride out the storm…
www.sosmagazine.biz
In the face of falling oil and gas prices, only a fifth of UK oil and gas professionals are confident about the outlook for the industry in 2015, according to new research published by DNV GL. While the strong correlation between oil price and confidence is expected, we need to take heed of lessons learned from previous downturns. More than 360 professionals took part in the survey and low confidence in the UK is also reflected in capital expenditure intentions. 40% of the UK survey respondents expect to decrease CAPEX this year, compared to 9% last year. On the plus side, there are still 17% expecting it to increase and more plan to increase CAPEX in the UK compared to Europe overall (27% versus 13%). Despite the current challenges, 17% still plan to increase spending on R&D/innovation, which is up 6% points since October. With regard to cost control, more than three quarters (77%) of UK respondents plan to increase strictness. A number of cost management measures are expected with 57% planning tougher

With the cost of Brent crude now hovering around a six-year low, there is no doubt that the current economic climate will affect producers and suppliers in their drive to deliver a competitive service. However, it is clear historically the pressures that bring the oil price down can create the conditions to make it rise again.

News In Brief.... Boost for economy as largest speculative builds at Beacon Park handed over to Great Yarmouth Borough Council A Key handover ceremony took place this week for the largest speculative business units yet constructed at Beacon Park by Great Yarmouth Borough Council as part of efforts to further boost the growing local economy. The ceremony at the park, in Gorlestonon-Sea, was followed by a special promotional event in which commercial property agents and business advisors were given a guided tour of the two units, which measure 1,415 sq m (15,230sq ft) and 1,912 sq m (20,579sq ft) each, including around 10 per cent as office space. In a sign of confidence in the local economy, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, the owner and developer of the premier park, is investing £8m to build more than 100,000sq ft of floorspace in four phases. Beacon Park is part of the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft (New Anglia) Enterprise Zone, which focuses on growing energy-related business within the East of England Energy Zone. The two units, which comprise the £3.5m third phase, are targeted at the growing energy sector in the Great Yarmouth borough. Once sold to occupiers, they are estimated to bring around 75 extra jobs to Beacon Park. This week, ELM Contracts, a Great Yarmouth-based construction businesses, officially handed over the keys to Cllr Trevor Wainwright, the council leader.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Cllr Wainwright said: “Before these new units were even finished, there was already strong interest from potential occupiers, focused on the energy sector. And the agents who toured the buildings were also impressed, so I’m confident firms will soon be moving in, securing and creating local jobs.

News In Brief....
Subsea products and equipment manufacturer Ennsub has successfully completed the design, manufacture, testing and installation of bespoke sealing systems for the Wheatstone Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) platform off the coast of Australia. The company was approached by a tierone marine contractor to design two different systems to provide an external and internal sealing system for 64-off 8” NS ballasting pipes located at each corner of the platform. Ennsub was responsible for the design and supply of all equipment, including downline recovery winches, remote disconnect heads and isolation plugs. Following an intensive factory-acceptance test programme, which simulated the offshore conditions, four Ennsub engineers were mobilised to Australia to perform the installation of the 128-off bespoke sealing systems. The solution presented by Ennsub replaced the alternative grouting solution which was being considered by the end user and the success of the operation exceeded all parties’ planned timescales with Ennsub’s engineers successfully completing the installation in half the time allocated. Scott Macknocher, Managing Director of Ennsub, said: “This was a great opportunity to demonstrate our design, innovation and supply capability on such a prestigious project. Our experienced design team gained a real understanding of the industry and project application. “We are very pleased with the success of the operation and performance of both the equipment and our experienced offshore technicians. The solution significantly reduced the planned installation time and had major cost saving benefits for the end user. This project is an excellent example of our capability to deliver bespoke solutions on similar projects.”

QHSE standards are changing Management systems are seen as either restricting the creativity of the organisation or helping it to grow and prosper. Management systems should add value to the organisation and help to ensure aspirations of the organisation and the customer are realised. They are ever evolving in line with the expectations of the industry, customers, employees and the management. All three standards ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety are due to change in the near future so there will be a renewed focus on management systems in 2015-2016. Organisations should be cautious of companies offering transition services at present as the standards have not been finalised so may be subject to change before final release. There will also be an increased strain on your auditors to become familiar with and be able to audit effectively to the new standards. There will be a three year transition programme to upgrade your existing management system approvals and Lead

Cambla launches game-changing technology to subsea market Independent project services consultancy, Cambla, has announced the launch of its state of the art technology software, the Schedule Animation Tool (S.A.T), a first of its kind for the oil and gas industry. S.A.T provides an accurate visual representation of a vessel’s
actual location and planned activities, making it easier to understand Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPs), construction sequences and plan global subsea and marine operations. Transforming the way that vessel schedules are analysed before, during and after performing subsea operations, the software is capable of identifying occasions when vessels are required to be in close proximity to other vessels or installations. In addition, it can generate a list of relevant SIMOPs or Close Approach Risk Assessments required to be carried out in advance. Alexander MacLeod, Owner and Project Services Manager at Cambla, said: “This is a monumental step for Cambla and a game changer for the entire industry. The team has been dedicated to producing an innovative product that will benefit the oil and gas sector.”

Valeport releases new software with bonus utilities Valeport’s latest operating software, Datalog X2 has just been released and is now available for free download via the website. This new version of software from Valeport is designed to interface, configure and download data from both legacy and new products and also includes bonus utilities. The added benefit of this latest generation of software is that not only will Datalog X2 ensure Valeport products will work across new software platforms, but with an embedded Terminal X2 programme it offers wider functionality to those not able to use other Terminal packages such as Hyperterminal. Terminal X2 will work with any Valeport instrument that communicates via serial RS232, although functionality maybe limited with some older instruments. Datalog X2 and Terminal X2 have been tested on Windows XP, Vista 7, 8 and 8.1. Datalog X2 is compatible with the following instruments and can replace
Datalog, Datalog Express and Tidelog software packages. • Model 106, 108, 308 and Midas ECM current meters • miniSVS, IPS, TIDE, CTD and SVP • Monitor CTD and SVP • Monitor CTD & SVP • Midas CTD, SVP, SVX2 & WLR • Model 740 Tide Gauge A further bonus utility is also included in the Datalog X2 bundle, a Seawater Calculation utility for manual checking of data. Users can simply input conductivity/ salinity, pressure temperature (in IPT68 or IPT 90 scales) and latitude (if known), then click the Calculate button. The program will calculate and display the following parameters: • Density Anomaly Gamma (Calculated Density – 1000kg/m³)
www.sosmagazine.biz
• Conductivity or Salinity (whichever the user did not enter)
16
• Sound Speed calculated using the chosen Speed of Sound Formula • Depth in metres calculated using the UNESCO standard formula. This is an approximation, and will not account for variations in density distribution throughout the water column.
Its accuracy has been estimated to better than 0.1m.
Kevin Edwards, Valeport Sales and Marketing Manager commented: “The Datalog X2 release will impact on many of our customers - it should give them the peace of mind that their Valeport products are compatible with a variety of new technologies and I would urge them to download the software. It’s free and easy to install and will ultimately help ensure the longevity of our products even when the customer may change other platforms. We’ve also wrapped in the bonus Seawater Calculation utility for manually checking data too, and we believe this Terminal Emulation utility will be a must for anyone not able to use other Terminal packages such as Hyperterminal.” Datalog X2 is available as a free download on www.valeport.co.uk and has been issued with new products since February this year, and is largely used in conjunction with Valeport’s Tide Gauge, Sound Velocity Profiler, CTD and Current Meter product ranges. CaviBlaster subsea cleaning Charles Cleghorn Limited have been promoting CaviDyne LLC’s CaviBlaster subsea cleaning product line in the UK and Ireland. The company has also undertaken CE accreditation work, thus opening sales into Europe for working actively within the EEU area. CaviBlaster systems use a patented super cavitating nozzle to achieve outstanding underwater cleaning performance. Water is pumped through the nozzle at precise volume and pressure, and a plume is formed. When these cavitation voids impinge on the fouled surface they collapse, releasing powerful shock waves that remove all hard and soft marine growth. However no damage is caused to the surface being cleaned, or to any anti-foul or foul release coatings.
time taken by a high pressure blaster. CaviBlasters are available for use by both divers and ROVs. The diver guns are provided with a 40% retro jet to ease operability. ROV nozzles can be supplied with up to 50% retro to enable use with the smallest of ROVs. Hydraulic powered units are available for mounting on work class ROVs. The latest developments include the CaviDome, using rotating nozzles to produce an area cleaning capability.
www.ccleghornltd.com
Typical pressure for the nozzles is 150 bar, and once the cavitation plume has formed the combination of low density and pressure in the plume effectively removes any hazard to a diver using the system, in stark contrast to conventional high pressure blasters. Side by side testing of CaviBlaster systems with high pressure blasters have demonstrated that for equal prime mover input power a CaviBlaster will clean a given object in a quarter of the

Ceona finalises installation of 570te multiple pipelay VLS and twin 400te cranes on the pioneering Ceona Amazon vessel Ceona, SURF contractor with heavy subsea construction capabilities, has marked another milestone in delivering its next generation flagship asset, the Ceona Amazon, following the successful installation of 570te multiple pipelay VLS and twin 400te cranes onto the deepwater field development vessel. One month after the vessel’s arrival at Huisman yard in the Netherlands, the Ceona Amazon has been equipped with her inclined multi-lay VLS with a top tension of 570te, and with two 400te Active Heave Compensated (AHC) masthead cranes able to work in tandem. The two 18m diameter wheels on the top tower and deck aft are also being installed. The next weeks will see Huisman complete the electrical and hydraulic hookup, and perform the commissioning of the system. Steve Preston, Chief Executive Officer of Ceona, who initiated the design concept for Ceona’s game changing vessel, said: “This is a particularly exciting moment for all those involved in bringing the Ceona Amazon to fruition. The cranes and multi-lay VLS are a milestone in the installation of pioneering equipment and features that take the vessel into the next era of cost-effective deepwater subsea construction and installation projects. “We are now looking forward to showcasing the Ceona Amazon and demonstrating its exceptional deepwater subsea tie-back and field development capabilities to our clients, suppliers, partners and other industry representatives at the end of February
in Schiedam. The asset is the flagship of our fleet of next generation vessels and is a clear indication of our commitment to bringing new, cost-effective subsea services to the global oil & gas operator market.” The Ceona Amazon’s versatility sets her apart as a deepwater field development asset with the vessel being purpose built to perform in multiple pipelay and operational modes, particularly for heavy subsea structure and floater installation services. In just one trip, the vessel is capable of undertaking complex logistical projects in remote, harsh and deepwater environments - making her ideally suited for provinces such as West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil. Shipbuilding specialist Lloyd Werft successfully delivered the Ceona Amazon less than two years after the letter of intent for its construction was signed. Huisman, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of heavy construction equipment for onshore and offshore operations, pre-built the cranes and multi-lay pipe VLS ready for installation on the vessel’s arrival in Schiedam. With capacity to carry 8,500te of rigid pipe or 5,500te of flexible, or a combination of both, the Ceona Amazon will be able to lay rigid and flexible pipelines and umbilicals, and install heavy subsea structures or floaters (TLP and FPSO) using its two 400te subsea cranes working in tandem. The vessel’s innovative G-lay pipelay system, developed and patented by
Ceona, features an inclinable lay spread with a top tension of 570te and a rigid pipe firing line system. It combines the offshore assembly of rigid pipe joints along a traditional firing line, then plastic bending of the pipe through a route similar to that of a reel-lay vessel, completed by a vertical exit through the moonpool (J-lay). The Ceona Amazon will represent the second new vessel – after the Polar Onyx – that Ceona has brought to the market on time and in less than a year. The Ceona Amazon is 199.4m long and 32.2m wide, drawing 8.0m with a gross tonnage of 33,000te. She is due to enter service early 2015.

Modulift go overboard Hot on the heels of the latest DNV standard released in October 2014, Modulift has revealed their latest product range; Subsea Modular Spreader Beams. In addition to their highly successful standard and heavy spreader beam ranges they have taken their unique modular elements to produce a versatile and efficient collection for deep water lifting. As with regular Spreader beams they are fully and correctly assembled when combined with the recommended end units, drop links and shackles top and bottom, which also allows for the options to use ROV shackles where necessary too.
Complying with DNV-OS-H206 – Loadout, Transport and Installation of Subsea Objects, the Modulift Subsea Spreader Beams are designed to safely hold weights up 500 tonnes. Unlike Modulift’s standard Spreader Beams that are manufactured using circular hollow section, the Subsea has an open section design, this being suitable for water submersion by eliminating the risks of any cavity or pressure issues. They are finished with a three-coat paint system that is based on a two-pack epoxy paint combination suitable for the marine environment.
Modulift’s exclusive ‘modular’ engineering is again reflected to offer users the economical ability to reuse their products time and time again, providing a cost effective solution to Subsea heavy lifting. As with all Modulift products the ease of transportation goes without saying aided by this modular design. The new nautical series is available to order or for more job specific requirements or high QA lifts, the Modulift engineering team can design custom made alternatives.

RUD Chains is a leading manufacturer of high quality round steel link chains. RUD round link chains are used across a range of demanding working environments, they show their strength across RUD’s conveyor and hoist systems to their well-known lifting and lashing means. As a response to the increasing demand from the industry for drive solutions based on round steel link chains, RUD has established the product group TECDOS®. TECDOS components and modules offers unrivalled solutions for a wide variety of maritime applications: for moving, pulling, lifting, telescoping, pivoting and swivelling. TECDOS has been setting high standards across the maritime and offshore industry due to its distinctive features. RUD’s fine calibrated round steel link chains are extremely robust, offer three-dimensional mobility and require less space than most comparable solutions. The chain fits perfectly with corresponding components such as pocket wheels and chain
guides, which run smoothly and offer an exceptionally high wear resistance. The latest RUD developments are the TECDOS OMEGA®, TECDOS PI® and TECDOS GAMMA® drive and idler units. TECDOS OMEGA is a device which allows you to pull, push, pivot, swivel structures; beams or cranes. Chain ferries use this drive to pull themselves along a chain. On excavator barges it is used to push stud poles up and down, on ship loaders to extend the conveyor beam and in ports it is used to switch railway cars. TECDOS OMEGA has features similar to a rack and pinion drives, it is easy to install, tolerates misalignment and heat elongation and does not produce reaction forces. It is less prone to damage when used on ice, sand, heat or other challenging environments.
containing the pocket wheels, bearings, guides and knot preventer. They allow deflection of the chain by 180° (TECDOS PI) and 90° (TECDOS GAMMA). They are also used for head drives; one loop of chain over two pocket wheels, and one driven by a motor. This works for applications such as spooling devices for winches, for skidding systems or for pushing a hangar door up and down. For the wind power and the offshore wind industry in particular, TECDOS chain solutions are used in applications such as wind blade production and wind blade installation. TECDOS has also been used for projects such as wind tower installations and maintenance. For more information contact RUD UK on 01227 276611 or email:

Influx detection Managed pressure drilling (MPD) is ideally suited to meet these needs. An adaptive drilling process, MPD precisely measures and controls the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore during the drilling process. The technique possesses a unique ability to carefully “walk the line” between pore and fracture pressures to prevent the uncontrolled influx, or kick, of reservoir fluids into the wellbore and up to the surface of the drilling rig.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Safe and secure control MPD provides considerable safety advantages over conventional overbalanced drilling techniques, which control the bottomhole pressure (BHP) in a well by varying the drilling mud weight to obtain the necessary hydrostatic pressure that will counter the pore pressure of the formation.
30
Increasing or decreasing the mud weight is an expensive and time consuming process that cannot efficiently manage rapidly changing differences between the BHP and pore pressure. MPD techniques use a series of chokes that dynamically control the annular pressure by manipulating the surface back pressure (SBP) to increase the BHP. Choke position can be varied in a matter of seconds, a significant improvement compared to the hours required to circulate and condition
the mud weight throughout the wellbore in overbalanced drilling. MPD also provides considerable safety and environmental benefits. Return flow is diverted away from the rig floor to a dedicated choke manifold by the use of a rotating control device (RCD), thereby reducing accompanying hazards to rig floor personnel. Flow measurement is critical to the MPD system, and is achieved through a
mass flowmeter installed downstream of the chokes on the MPD manifold. The mass flow meter provides accurate flow readings and enables early kick detection. Due to the fact that influxes can be detected and controlled earlier and the annular pressure profile manipulated as required, casing setting depths can be extended. Industry studies suggest that the proper utilization of MPD may lead to the elimination or extension of casing setting points.
Flexible electronic differential pressure VEGABAR 80 includes electronic Differential Pressure as a standard option in all sensors in the range. No special field electronics enclosures or transducers, it only requires a standard device with a ‘slave’ electronics module in the other. Simply connect them together for your e-DP system. This means any two VEGABAR 80’s can be used, minimising cost, complexity and stocks. Flush, abrasion resistant, high overload ceramics are ideal for offshore and subsea applications. Mix housings: a level in a pressurised tank with a ‘submersible IP68’ sensor in a flooding bund with a standard housing on the top. Mix materials: a flush ceramic diaphragm on a mud tank and a metal one for top pressure. Select the sensor design: suspended, submersible ‘hydrostatic’ transmitters for mud density measurement. The standard sensor interconnection can extend to over 100m. Connection sizes from ½” BSP/NPT (flush) upwards. The accreditation portfolio includes ATEX, SIL, FDA, EHEDGE, 3A and Marine. Communications: 4-20mA, HART, Profibus and Foundation Fieldbus. Nominal sensor pressure ranges from 50mbar up to 1000 Bar (same/similar ranges must be used to suit the e-D.P. application) temperature range -90 to +400 °C. Electronic DP has a host of advantages for the user, particularly over conventional ‘Remote capillary’ chemical seal based DP systems especially in lower static pressures: temperature changes, faster easier installation, higher accuracy in suited applications, no oil-filled capillaries, smaller connection sizes, better temperature performance, faster response, lower costs and easier maintenance. It is especially useful in lower pressure applications: mud density, level differential and pressurised vessel levels. So what’s stopping you from changing the way you measure differential pressure?

Fire and industrial signalling In the great majority of automatic fire alarm sounders or fire alarm systems, the end result of the detection of a fire is the initiation of audible and visual warning devices that alert the occupants to the danger so that they can evacuate the premises.
the building or the position of the nearest emergency exit. Clearly, the technical requirements for a fire alarm system and the nature of the warning signals themselves will vary greatly. The key consideration for
the system designer is how to produce clear, unambiguous fire alarm sounders throughout the protected areas in the event of an emergency.
www.e2s.com
Given the complexity and variation of different types of buildings and structures in which fire alarm sounders are installed, and the further variations to be found in the homogeneity or otherwise of the occupants, it is clear that, for maximum effectiveness, many different types of fire alarm sounders will be required. For example, at one end of the spectrum may be an offshore oil rig, which is manned by highly trained workers who operate under strict safety procedures at all times; at the other end is a large retail development crowded with shoppers who are unfamiliar with the general layout of

BASF and FoundOcean to revolutionise productivity and safety in offshore grouting FoundOcean and BASF have recently launched an integrated material and service system for the provision of a new high strength grout, MasterFlow 9800, in Edinburgh, UK.
MasterFlow 9800 is set to revolutionise offshore grouting, by introducing a high strength grout with unrivalled operational advantages. The material is able to be shipped and stored in silos rather than bags, facilitating quayside storage in all weathers, more flexibility in deck layout and no requirement for bag or container lifting during grouting operations and dockside resupplies. The MasterFlow 9800 grout system uses an upgraded version of FoundOcean’s Recirculating Jet Mixer (RJM).
38 32
Moflash carry not only European standards such as CE and ATEX approvals but also international standards such IECEX, CQST, as well as conforming to ICAO.
The delivery rates when using an RJM are upwards of 20m³/hr and therefore faster grouting of the annulus can be achieved, saving valuable offshore operating days. The closed circuit between the cement silo and RJM mixer, along with the continuous mixing process, also minimises overage, as well as reducing dust. “Demanding offshore challenges have set extremely high requirements for the grout and grouting works in the development of MasterFlow 9800. Aligning the excellent properties of the new offshore grout with the operational advantages of FoundOcean’s continuous mixing and pumping equipment will bring
major health and safety improvements and installation cost reductions,” says Luc Westhof, Global Key Account Manager at BASF Construction Chemicals. The material offers a number of superior properties, including excellent early strength development, even at cold temperatures, and high fatigue resistance. When combined with its operational advantages, these properties have the potential to provide significant cost optimisation for the foundation installation, whilst ensuring the durability of the grouted connection.

What is safe handling? This article is written to give purchasers an insight into the selection of handling equipment.
There is often little checking of the pedigree of the handling equipment before it is purchased. It is difficult for a purchasing department to procure quality equipment that they have no experience in. The endless offering of web sites selling handling equipment makes it difficult for even experienced people to work out what is good and what is bad. I am sure you have guessed by now the writer of this article works for a company who manufactures quality handling equipment. I have a number of suggestions of ways to ensure you buy equipment you can trust.
What you should look for when choosing a supplier Traceability
Can the supplier give you full traceability for the product? You should not simply trust in something because it is painted yellow and has some stickers on it which you recognise.
You would expect that all manufacturers of handling equipment would be inspected by a relevant body to ensure that they design and build their handling units to be safe and compliant with any regulations relating to their product group. Unfortunately this is not the case. Anyone can set up a company and manufacture equipment and they can easily make claims about what regulations they comply with.
Build File
All companies who design and manufacture equipment must produce and hold a technical file for every product they manufacture. The question is can the company show you the build file if you asked to see it?
Hazardous Area
Most people when planning a lift would ensure that they have the correct shackles and strops and that these are all within their test date. We should also be aware that any lift is only as secure as the weakest link. All too often the weakest link is the handling equipment itself.
Complying with Regulations
Just keep in mind that as the purchaser you have the right to ask as many questions as you like to satisfy yourself that you are buying compliant equipment.

Underwater clean up with Cat Pumps There can be few more challenging cleaning processes, nor ones that demand ingenious methods, than that of remote cleaning marine growth from subsea structures such as the legs of offshore platforms. For several years Aberdeen based HPR UK has provided a one stop shop for ROV’s (Remote Operated Vehicles) and ancillary equipment, experienced pilots and survey engineers to carry out inspection projects where the use of divers could be time and safety prohibitive. Amongst its range of specialist services are ‘Hi Flo / Hi Pressure’ systems for cleaning marine growth from structures to allow for clear visual inspection (Fig.1). Unique to HPR UK, these systems use ROVs which can launch and operate in higher sea state conditions than divers. They can also stay in the water for longer, thereby maximising up-time for the project. Also this means that the company has fewer problems with HSE issues.
pump, the container included an Ex-light and flashing beacon, an ATEX approved electrical control panel for managing the motor thermistor and heater, plus a small air driven reeler for the delivery hose deployment. “Over the last two years we have found an increasing number of our customers are asking for ATEX pumps and pump packages for use in explosive atmospheres,” says Cat Pumps General Manager Brian Hubbard. “Here at Cat Pumps UK we have developed and tested a full range of PD pumps that meet ATEX Zone 1 and 2 areas. The area in which they operate might be designated hazardous even though our pump may be handling a non-flammable liquid, such as seawater. Equally, just because the pumped fluid may be flammable, this would not automatically create an explosive atmosphere, provided that special consideration is given to the pump construction and installation.” Cleaning or blasting marine growth from structures involves the use of high pressure water delivered to the point of application through specially designed lances. These create cavitation in the water flow, with the bubbles resulting from this action exploding onto the marine growth. To be wholly effective, the systems require pumps capable of providing the continuous flow of high pressure water from the platform. A pump type that is best suited for this is the high pressure positive displacement triplex plunger pump. “Most platforms can give us a safe location for our other electrical pumps,” says HPR UK Director Dave Gillies, “but we have had several requests for ATEX Zone 1 & 2 pumping equipment. The most recent one came from a customer for whom we had to building a system into a 10’ x 8’ container against a tight deadline.” Having a very short time frame for building and delivering the system, HPR UK turned to Cat Pumps as they were the only company that could offer an ATEX Zone 1 pump at short notice to the specification. The pump supplied was the Cat Pumps high pressure positive displacement triplex plunger model 6821 (Fig.2), a compact pump capable of handling seawater at the required flow rate of 70 litres/min at 200 bar. Along with the

Due to their extremely high specification of design and manufacture, standard bareshaft Cat Pumps products require very few modifications to make them suitable for use in ATEX areas. Generally, it is only necessary to minimise the risk of static electricity and to strengthen a few external parts to protect against accidental impact damage. Fundamentally the pumps never get hot enough in normal use to ignite most flammable vapours. “Using seawater being taken from the platform’s fire water ring main, our ROVs typically work down to depths of 50 m, but we can provide up to 200 m of half-inch hose for the larger systems,” continues Dave Gillies. “The ROVs can be in the water for anything between eight and ten hours cleaning large areas of hulls and intricate areas between risers and conductors. This level of duty requires pumps that can maintain both the required pressure and a constant flow over the period of use, which is why the high pressure triplex plunger pump is specified. For this recent contract, we urgently needed an ATEX pump and we knew that Cat Pumps was the only company that could supply a skid-mounted ATEX approved motor and pump in the time available.”

New Texas manufacturing center to expand PPE’s global capabilities Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE) one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high performance molded elastomer seals, have announced the official opening of a new manufacturing facility in Brenham, Texas earlier in February 2015. The new site, which commenced production in November 2014, manufactures high performance compression molded components for the oil and gas industry as well as critical components for semiconductor and heavy equipment applications. Strategically placed near Houston, the hub of the American oil & gas industry and the Californian semiconductor manufacturing base, the new 30,000sq. ft site complements PPE’s existing manufacturing facility in the UK and will include its own tool making, extrusion and inspection departments in line with PPE’s flexible operating model.
Paul Gillyon, Managing Director of PPE added: “We have made significant investment in the new Houston facility, both in capital equipment and experienced
Sealing solutions play a significant part in the success of many companies across a wide range of industries. Whether its oil and gas exploration, semiconductor manufacturing or heavy duty equipment such as marine diesel engines, each industry requires different types of high performance seals in order to conform to increasingly stringent regulations. However, due to the expense and complexity involved in the manufacture of high performance elastomer materials, most components are manufactured to order where the process of acquiring appropriate, high performance seals can be challenging and extensive.
It is therefore important that any provider of sealing solutions can deliver materials of the highest quality in the shortest possible timeframes. PPE has a track record of developing exceptionally high performance materials for the most challenging applications. In the oil and gas industry PPE’s materials, including the EnDura® brand, have become known for their performance in high temperature and high pressure applications. PPE also offers a wide range of sealing solutions for heavy equipment applications in manufacturing and industry. Hone-All responds to oil industry price pressures with new Boring Machine Leighton Buzzard sub-contract machining specialist Hone-All has now taken delivery of the first of two new deep hole boring machines from TIBO Tiefbohrtechnik. The German built TIBO B250 machine arrived in February and will increase the company’s capacity and reduce production costs at a time when the UK oil & gas industry is demanding greater efficiencies from its supply chain to counteract the falling oil prices. The new acquisition marks the first stage of a £650,000 investment that will also see a smaller TIBO B80 deep hole boring machine being delivered in early April. Highlighting the importance of the investment, Hone-All Director, Andrea Rodney says: “The fluctuating prices in the oil & gas industry are creating an impact on the complete supply chain. Listening to our customers increasing ‘cost-down’ approach, these acquisitions are a rapid response by Hone-All and it will enable us to meet these demands without creating an impact upon our business. Furthermore, the new arrivals will enable us to alleviate any capacity issues whilst giving us the opportunity to win new business beyond the scale of our existing plant list.”
www.sosmagazine.biz
The largest deep hole boring machine at Hone-All prior to delivery of the TIBO B250, had a capacity of 200mm diameter and 2.8m in length. The TIBO B250 will give Hone-All a 250mm
48
diameter capacity with 3.2m machining length. Discussing the importance of the first of the two new arrivals, Hone-All Managing Director, Colin Rodney says: “Our size restrictions limited our ability to quote for jobs and we were losing work that was just beyond the size limits of our existing machines. By taking delivery of the TIBO B250, we will instantly increase our productivity, sales, capacity and extend our product offering for end users. Simultaneously, we will reduce our costs, cycle times, energy consumption and eliminate any inefficiencies throughout the deep hole boring department.” The colossal TIBO B250 has a 9.5m bed length and 14,000kg payload that is encapsulated in an FEA developed base that guarantees thermal stability, stiffness and accuracy. The result is a highly robust base that supports a drill spindle motor output of 71kW and a workpiece spindle headstock motor with 15kW. For Hone-All, this means that diameters beyond 200mm diameter can now be drilled in a single pass rather than 3 or 4 passes. Essentially, this will reduce cycle times on the large diameter drilling by upwards of 50% as the company moves forward.
