Stop over-engineering to reset the cost base, says industry chief at Offshore Europe The Chief Executive Officer of Proserv called for the industry to make dynamic changes to the way it acts and behaves. Speaking at SPE Offshore Europe 2015, David Lamont said the North Sea has many years of profitable life ahead if the sector urgently adopts more collaborative and efficient business practices. He said: “We must embrace and rekindle the pioneering spirit that made the North Sea great in the past to ensure the North Sea industry doesn’t fade out prematurely, but really flourishes in its latter years. Despite talk in recent years of the urgent need to act and collaborate, even before the oil price crash, the industry as a whole still has a long way to go. Everyone knows what needs to be done but the inertia in the industry is of great concern. The time is now to put a stop to this and make dynamic changes to the way we act and behave. Changing our approach to how we think and do business will see the industry thrive, rather than simply survive.” The Chief Executive Officer of Proserv said: “The industry must challenge the conventional by looking beyond standard practices of simply challenging the supply chain to trim costs. Any material change will only come by changing the fundamentals in the way we work together.

“As a start, we must stop over-engineering if we are to reset the cost base. Realising the value of the huge number of marginal fields in the UKCS will only be possible if we as an industry collaborate and cooperate to make the most of the existing infrastructure, enhanced only by the most appropriate and efficient technology and engineering know how. Applying the same old engineering
practice and business model is simply not an option.” Mr Lamont cited American industrialist, Henry Ford who said:”Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. While we are seeing real efforts and actions to collaborate, it is still the exception rather than the rule. Too many people in the industry are still holding their breath for a return to the “good old days of $100 oil” which simply won’t happen, and even if it does, the practices of the recent past are too wasteful in any case. Mr Lamont also challenged the industry to change its ‘remove the old and replace with the new’ culture to a ‘brain surgery’ mindset that has underpinned Proserv’s successful growth and track record for doing more with less. The challenges and opportunities that the industry faces with brownfield subsea developments are varied but all too often, the industry’s initial response to them is not. The typical reaction to a problem is to undertake a complete system change when sometimes a more flexible and simpler approach may be appropriate, especially in a low commodity price environment. After all, you wouldn’t replace your car if the windscreen wiper wasn’t working.
We focus on solving the electronics issue rather than changing-out the entire control module - a costly process that brings significant risks because of the changes made to all the external interfaces. Replacing only the electronics allows for the external interfaces to remain intact. In addition, it gives operators a truly ‘maintenance free’ subsea production control system and uninterrupted production, with state of the art system capability to allow the use of advanced system monitoring and data gathering.” Mr Lamont concluded by saying that the industry has both a moral and an economic obligation to work collectively towards maximising total production from difficult reserves.
“With more than 80 per cent of world energy use still reliant on fossil fuels, the maintenance and optimisation of aging brownfield subsea fields are critical. On mature brownfield assets with dwindling production, the longer it takes to make the right and cost effective decision to maximise output, the more expensive that decision becomes.”
Ingenious simplicity is at the core of Proserv’s approach. We work with our customers to maximise the use of their existing infrastructure and assets by delivering appropriate products and services specifically developed for brownfield application – driving costs down , while providing industry leading reliability and enhanced functionality.
“By not changing its operating model, the industry will risk the future of that asset. A subsea asset which is losing production revenue, against a backdrop of increased operating costs, is only going to become less viable to the point of shut-down and decommissioning - denying the world recovery of a limited and valuable resource.”
Often, that may mean focusing on only one aspect of a system that requires attention and layering on, or working alongside the existing system, rather than recommending a complete change out. This minimises any production downtime and maximises the use of existing infrastructure.
“No matter what the commodity price is now or in the future, we have it within our power as an industry to control costs, improve efficiencies and prosper. We owe it to ourselves and to the next generation.”
For example, when the electronics in the subsea control module require replacement, either because of reliability issues or changes required elsewhere in the system, we apply subsea system ‘brain surgery’.
Proserv, which operates worldwide through 29 operating centres based in 11 countries, has a 40-year track record in delivering world-class solutions for the energy industry, particularly in the drilling, production and subsea market sectors.

Oil and gas still seen as an attractive career field New survey sheds light on workforce perspective of investing in young talent. The overwhelming majority of oil and gas professionals would still recommend a career in the oil and gas industry to the next generation, despite recent market challenges associated with low oil prices, according to a new, industry-wide poll recently conducted by Rigzone.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Almost 1,000 skilled professionals from across 74 countries participated in the survey carried out by Rigzone. Of those, 84% said they would recommend the oil and gas industry as a career choice to school pupils or students, with wide career prospects, a long-term future (due to high energy demand) and competitive salaries among the reasons cited most often.
8
Asked to rank areas of investment in a downturn in order of priority, oil and gas industry professionals ranked health and safety first, followed by workforce development. Graduate/apprenticeship programmes also ranked as a high priority (third) for professionals, despite more than two-thirds (76 percent) of respondents not having participated in such a programme themselves. Indeed, the overwhelming majority (70 percent) of working oil and gas professionals surveyed believe graduate and apprenticeship positions are valuable, if not very valuable, and are of huge importance to the industry.
“We know petroleum engineering graduates and apprentices are facing tougher competition for entry-level positions in today’s challenging market,” said Mark Guest, Rigzone’s Strategic Development Director. “But what this survey tells us is that, even in the face of difficult times, those professionals already working in the industry believe that companies need to continue to invest in the recruitment and development of young talent. Importantly, in spite of recent industry difficulties, the current workforce still views the sector as presenting strong career prospects for students and recent graduates.”
“The industry’s future is going to entail development of harder-to-reach reserves, which will present new challenges as companies will have to enter new frontiers. Continued investment in future talent is the only way to ensure the oil and gas sector avoids a skills gap in the mediumto long-term. I am very pleased to say that this study shows that this is a message the workforce understands well.” The majority of respondents (46 percent) indicated that they believe the industry is inspirational (33 percent) or very inspirational (13 percent) in terms of attracting the next generation, with only 10 percent indicating they don’t think the sector is doing enough to inspire emerging talent.

OE 2015 confirms a positive outlook for the industry and the next generation SPE Offshore Europe 2015, held in Aberdeen, Scotland from September 8-11, sent out a very clear message that the oil and gas industry has a future for many years to come. The theme of the 2015 event, inspiring the next generation, allowed the industry to address the technical, business and people challenges it faces now and into the future. At the heart of this is the need to attract and encourage the next generation of talent into the industry.
“One of the challenges facing the industry is inspiring the next generation,” said Charles Woodburn, CEO of Expro and Technical Chairman of SPE Offshore Europe 2015. “I hope that the honest and open conversation we have had over the last few days will lead to real progress in this area. While we don’t have all the answers yet, it’s important we take this dialogue and turn it into a clear framework that can be delivered by the industry as a whole.” Attendance figures remained very strong at 55,947 with delegates drawn from 104 countries. Attendance was the second highest in the long history of the show. A record 1,535 global organisations from 44 countries exhibited this year, showcasing their products, services and expertise. This included 336 companies exhibiting at the event for the first time. The sold-out space covered 27,228 square metres, with more inside space than ever before. Re-bookings for 2017 are looking strong already. Over the four days of the world’s largest upstream oil and gas conference and exhibition outside North America, around 5,000 visitors attended the conference plenary session, 11 keynote sessions, 80 SPE technical paper presentations, and daily topical lunches and breakfast briefings.
www.sosmagazine.biz
Stephen Graham, Chief Operations Officer for the SPE, added: “The conference programme successfully addressed a number of relevant industry priorities, incorporating the theme of inspiring the next generation. Combined with a busy show floor where exhibitors met with existing and potential customers, I believe SPE Offshore Europe 2015 has been a great success.”

More than 400 school pupils from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Highland and Angus took part in three half-day workshops and site visits, which gave them an insight into the industry and the opportunity to meet young engineering professionals who shared their work experiences. Other Inspire events included a Career Pathways Fair, a Student Development Summit, and Energy4me aimed at school science teachers. Michael Engell-Jensen, Executive Director, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) and Keynote Chairman, said: “This week’s keynote speakers, as well as the Inspire Programme, provided the next generation with plenty of inspiring reasons to join this industry. But, as Professor Brian Cox mentioned, we also need to provide students with pathways to a career in oil and gas.
I would like to see industry develop multi-year programmes to encourage schoolchildren to consider a career in this sector. And, for our newly qualified graduates, who have been caught out by the current economic difficulties, I am supportive of industry exploring ways to allow them to get work experience, something many graduates say would help them get their first job in the industry.” The positive sentiment was echoed by exhibitors, many of whom said that not only had the 2015 show been a good one for business, it had been one of the best they’d experienced. “It has been a very successful show for us with one of the benefits being that it has given people the time to talk,” said Ian Crossland, UK Director for RESMAN. “Very senior management from the operators have been taking time to meet their vendors and contractors to talk business, and there have been indications that things are moving in the right direction. We’ve also had lots of overseas interest, including a visit from the Norwegian ambassador.” Kris Frampton, CETCO Energy Services, also said 2015 had been a good show for them: “There were more business opportunities for us than there were two years ago. I think the reason for that is that there is a lot more focus on production. Because we have strong environmental credentials and we can optimise operator production capabilities, we have had a lot of people coming to talk to us.” FMC Technologies, also reported they’d had a good show. Tina Kruse, Global Exhibition & Events Manager, said: “We’ve definitely seen steady traffic since Day One, with everyone from customers to university students visiting. Our theatre has been extremely busy which has given us the opportunity to get our message across about cost reduction. It has been a good show for us.” Visitors to the show also used twitter to give their views. Aberdeenshire Councillor Jill Webster tweeted: At Offshore Europe, quite a buzz about the place & still business to be done.” Maria Harper, Marketing Manager for show organisers Reed Exhibitions, said: “The week of the show generated in excess of 6,000 interactions by 4,500 unique users on twitter alone, and included conference highlights, exhibitors’ news, product launches and invitations to events, all in real-time. “The website and app were also widely used throughout the event, with 122,000 visits to the website during the week, and more than 13,000 individuals downloading the app to use the exhibitor directory, conference guide, interactive floor plans and visitor information.” Organisationally, Reed Exhibitions thinks the show was the smoothest running ever. Vasyl Zhygalo, Senior Exhibition Director for Reed Exhibitions, commented: “We learn lessons from every edition of the event and this year we think the logistics flowed very well. The increased number of shuttle buses running to and from the city centre, offices and hotels proved to be very popular as did the park and ride. The weather was also on our side.” The next SPE Offshore Europe will be held in Aberdeen from 5-8 September 2017. One of the new features announced for the next event will be the Decommissioning Zone 2017.

AVC Media completes offshore video project for Technip Industry News
Full service media and communications company, AVC Media has completed a major project providing video and animation services for world leading project management, engineering and construction company, Technip. AVC Media which has its headquarters in Aberdeen, has been supplying the offshore industry with video, AV and design services since inception, and now provides a diverse range of video solutions from 2D & 3D animation, training videos, promotional videos and much more. AVC Media worked closely with Technip to create bespoke video and animation content for the Marathon Oil, West Brae Subsea Well Extension Project. The video showcases the side-track drilling at the West Brae Subsea Well followed by drilling and completion of a new well at the West Brae manifold. With minimal space for a new well at West Brae, installation of a new subsea manifold was required to improve long-term reliability and provide opportunity to debottleneck, whilst optimising production. AVC Media created animations to identify subsea infrastructures situated near the installation position whilst showing near exact locations of existing subsea mattress and equipment. AVC and Technip worked in partnership to create accurate animations to clearly show the environment and any possible obstacles that might arise. Following the successful first part of the project AVC Media captured the fabrication of the manifold along with all trials and testing, all of which were conducted at a number of different locations across an eight month period. Each key milestone was filmed to ensure the final video production provided viewers with a vivid understanding of the project.
produced a short film to showcase the project in its entirety. The documentary style video production catalogues the complete project from initial meetings through to the manifold installation. Each stage was completed in-house at AVC Media meaning no aspect of the project needed to be outsourced.
“We are delighted to have worked on this substantial project and it is brilliant to now see the end result. Our team had worked on this project for over a year, filming in partnership with Technip throughout the project and attending regular weekly meetings to ensure every step of the manifold installation and fitting was captured. Our video production team is well positioned to deliver such a large work scope, with our capability to provide a diverse range of video services from 3D animation, offshore and onshore filming, component visualisation, training videos and promotional videos.”

Offshore Energy Amsterdam
Investing in the future of energy
On 13 and 14 October 2015 the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (OEEC) will take place in the Amsterdam RAI. More than 13,500 unique visitors and 650 exhibitors from over 80 different countries will dive into issues surrounding the developments and changes in the gas, oil and energy industry. “We want to update the industry on the various possibilities and innovations available,” says Femke Perlot-Hoogeveen, Offshore Energy Conference Manager. “This is the reason that we have chosen the theme Investing in the future of energy.” The recent developments in the offshore industry deserve a program dedicated to shedding light on those subjects. One of the new conference themes this year include Well Intervention vessels. The well intervention market is expected to grow, owing both to an increasing focus on lifetime extension and a general increase in operations globally. This session looks at well intervention vessels best practices as well as new vessel designs and their cost reducing potential. This year Subsea Processing is also back on the agenda. Subsea processing provides an alternative to production equipment located on a fixed or floating platform. In a special technical session the latest developments in subsea processing solutions including water removal and re-injection or disposal, boosting, gas separation and gas compression will be discussed. Experts will present the viability of subsea processing for both green fields and brown fields. Other new themes on Offshore Energy 2015 will be Marine Energy and HPHT Development. Conference Advisory Board This year OEEC has established a special Conference Advisory Board. Composed of a diverse group of offshore professionals who have a unique knowledge about how the industry works.
The Board assists the OEEC organization in identifying the key challenges and issues in the offshore sector. Guido van den Bos from NOV is looking forward to participating in the Advisory Board: “I expect to lift the conference to an even higher level by suggesting current topics and difficulties in the industry, and to provide an effective, safe, and cost efficient solution.” Joop Slager of Wintershall Noordzee is also happy he can share his expertise: “I think I can play a role in improving the technical content of the program and I want to give substance to high-quality issues.” History teaches us that the oil, gas, and energy industry has always shown great resilience. It is remarkable how the industry has maintained its ability to adapt to changes and developments. In the meantime organizations must continue to focus on improvements on efficiency, strategy and operations. Offshore Energy 2015 intends to tackle these issues and provide clear answers.
Offshore Energy 2015 Show Preview
With a dropping oil price In 2015 and 2016, companies can decide to either freeze or drop existing projects, which would hit offshore contractors hard and deter investors. This potential domino effect makes 2015 a sink or swim year. Offshore Energy 2015 will focus on what the future will look like. And especially how developments and opportunities can be improved upon efficiently.

Wei-Li crane ship leaves Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque
A total of 225 blocks were required, along with an additional 56 steel pillars of up to seven metres in length to support the stern. Wooden wedges also had to be added to the lateral blocks to take account of the unusual hull shape and to ensure complete stability in the dry dock. The scope of work over the ten day period included, along with the standard work for class survey, blasting and painting the hull and the overhauling of the internal and overboard valves. The scope of the electrical works was extensive given the tight time frame, with a large number of motors removed and transported back to workshop for overhaul before being returned and refitted. The last ones were fitted and tested on the same day of the vessel’s departure. The starboard propeller blades were also rebuilt. This required
re-welding tips onto each of the blades followed by a full polish for both propellers. Six generator coolers were also removed for overhauling, as were their bearings, and some major repairs were made to the accommodation. Cooperation with the project team from owner Shanghai Salvage was excellent; thanks in part to the assistance of a local Chinese national attending a nearby university who helped smooth the language differences.
“Ensuring that the Wei-Li was properly supported in the dry dock was a complex project in itself. With all the blocks and pillars, plus the positions of the vessel’s thrusters, it was not easy to position her in the centre line of the dock. Once accomplished, however, the work proceeded smoothly and after ten days of hard work around the clock she was on her way again. It was a pleasure to work with Shanghai Salvage and its representatives.” Khalil Benjelloul, Head of Marketing and

Bibby Offshore delivers double in decommissioning Bibby Offshore, a leading subsea services provider to the oil and gas industry, has this year delivered two multimillion pound decommissioning contracts to the UK Continental Shelf. Endeavour Energy appointed Bibby Offshore to perform operations in the Renee and Rubie fields located in blocks 15/27 and 15/28 of the Central North Sea, approximately 115km east of Aberdeen. The 60 day agreement, which was completed in Q3 of this year, involved Bibby Offshore’s dive support vessel (DSV) Bibby Sapphire and construction support vessel Olympic Ares, completing the recovery of subsea equipment including cross-over structures, umbilicals and protection mattresses. “Decommissioning work has been a key area of focus for Bibby Offshore for many years and as a result, we have built up a strong track record. Production from the Renee and Rubie fields ceased in 2009 and, following a site survey we completed last October, we were contracted to be part of this extensive project.”
“UKCS decommissioning costs are forecast to reach in excess of £50billion over the next 35 years. Decommissioning operations in particular are specialist by nature in order to ensure that all materials and often complex infrastructure are removed and disposed of safely and responsibly, with minimal environmental impact.”

Derek Neilson, Managing Director of Endeavour Energy UK said “When we tendered this work we were pleased to see that Bibby had a clear understanding of our requirements. We established a strong working relationship with Bibby which enhanced the effectiveness and efficiency throughout the programme and resulted in the safe and successful completion of the subsea facilities decommissioning work this year”. “Bibby Offshore also successfully completed work for Tullow Oil SK (TOSK) throughout April and May 2015, utilising DSV Bibby Topaz to perform decommissioning operations at the Orwell and Wissey subsea installations, including the tie-ins at the Thames and Horne and Wren platforms, in block 49/28 of the Southern North Sea. Both scopes of work have been a cross-business effort, drawing on the skills and expertise of the entire Bibby Offshore team to deliver safe and competitive services. These contracts not only demonstrate the breadth of our capabilities, but they also help solidify our position as leaders in subsea services.” concluded Barry Macleod.

The ISA500 is the only sensor in the world to provide Altitude, Heading, Pitch and Roll from a single device. With a 120 meter (394 feet) Altitude range measurement capability, the ISA500 is the longest range 500kHz Altimeter available today. Making use of a composite transducer and advanced digital acoustic engine, the ISA500 is able to achieve significantly long range while providing sub-millimetre measurement accuracy. In addition to Altitude, the ISA500 also provides Heading, Pitch and Roll readings – ideal for AUV/ROV navigation, underwater equipment deployment, touch down monitoring or riser monitoring applications.
At under 11cm (4.3”) long, 4.5cm (1.8”) wide and weighing just 0.5kg (1.10lb) in air makes the ISA500 a highly compact unit. This form factor is ideal for applications where space and weight are critical considerations. Using under 60mA of power at 24VDC also makes the ISA500 one of the most power efficient units available to day – ideal for long term monitoring deployments. The on board pitch and roll sensor can be used to automatically compensate for pitch, roll and Altimeter misalignment to provide consistent true Altitude readings – a first in Altitude measurement technology.
“With the ISA500 we have created a very capable sensor, with the benefit of being very easy to use. Through the provision of not only Altitude, but Heading, Pitch and Roll; users are given capability previously unseen from a single device. This presents a significant cost saving opportunity through intelligent integration of multiple capabilities into a single device.” Ben Grant, Managing Director of Impact Subsea.
Housed in a robust titanium housing, complete with industry standard connector, ensures that the ISA500 is not only at the forefront of technology, but built to withstand the harshest of underwater environments.

Bibby HydroMap showcases d’ROP with PanGeo’s SBI
As a dedicated survey ROV, d’ROP was launched earlier this year and has been performing trials with a number of cable locating systems before being mobilised to a project on board Bibby HydroMap’s 27m catamaran Bibby Athena. The d’ROP has been designed to offer a remotely operated survey platform capable of operating effectively and cost efficiently in dynamic marine environments, whilst accommodating various survey sensors, including the PanGeo SBI. Originally designed for operation from predominantly work-class ROVs, the PanGeo SBI provides
a real-time 3D grid view of the sub seabed, accurately imaging pipelines, cables, umbilicals, concrete mattresses, ferrous and non-ferrous UXO’s and other buried objects. One key benefit of the PanGeo system over traditional pulse-induction technology is that the cable can remain in service throughout survey operations, resulting in a significant cost-saving for the operator. Equipped with a PanGeo Sub-Bottom Imager (SBI), the d’ROP has already successfully acquired depth of burial data on a 175km cable length in UK waters. The trials were performed over a very challenging section of seabed dominated by sand waves up to 4m in height, as well as large sections of rock protection. d’ROP Team Leader Colin Burke comments: “The efficiency and capability of d’ROP when combined with the data quality of the SBI has produced fantastic results so far. From Bibby Athena, the d’ROP has worked successfully in up to 3.5 knots of
tide, acquiring up to 40km/day, which is impressive considering the size of vessel.”
“PanGeo is delighted to be involved with Bibby Hydromap on this project. Our joint aim was always to provide a high resolution but cost efficient survey solution for clients and we are pleased to see that this is now happening.” CEO of PanGeo Subsea Bernie Morrison.

First Subsea completes Goliat bend stiffener connections
Nexans to supply subsea cables for Abu Dhabi’s Nasr oilfield
Subsea connector specialist, First Subsea, has completed the installation of bend stiffener connections for gas lift and production risers, power cables and umbilicals, for the Goliat FPSO in the Norwegian Barents Sea.
French company Nexans has secured a €90m contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to supply high-voltage power cables and infield cables for the new offshore super complex serving Abu Dhabi’s Nasr oilfield.
Operated by ENI Norge AS, the Goliat FPSO is the first offshore oil development in Norway’s Arctic region, in the Barents Sea.
The field is located 130km north-west of Abu Dhabi City in UAE. HHI is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the second package of Nasr full field development project.
In total, the Goliat FPSO features 11 Type II bend stiffener connections (BSC) at present, with a further 10 receptacle I-tubes pre-installed within the base of the vessel, enabling more tiebacks to be added as field production increases. The Type II BSC was selected for the Goliat tie-backs because the receptacle has no moving parts, enabling a simpler riser, umbilical or cable connection. The First Subsea Type II BSC comprises a ball and taper connector attached to a bend stiffener, which is pulled into a pre-machined I-tube. The connector is self-energizing and self-aligning, and features First Subsea’s Automatic Release Clamp (ARC) enabling both diverless and ROVless bend stiffener connections.
Under the contract, HHI is performing engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning work for the complex. Services include separate platforms for gas treatment, separation, and accommodation platform; as well as installation of subsea power and infield cables. For the Nasr project, Nexans is supplying 132kV XLPE insulated three-core subsea power cable incorporating three fibre-optic elements to HHI, along with 11kV XLPE insulated three-core infield cables, which also feature three fibre-optic elements. Nexans’s facility located in Halden Norway will manufacture the Nasr cables.

Straightpoint launches Runningline Dynamometer Force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell manufacturer Straightpoint has launched a new product for measuring tension on lines—the Running Line Dynamometer (or TIMH). The product, part of the tension in motion range, is built with dockside, marine, offshore, towage and salvage applications in mind but it is anticipated that the TIMH will also be used in other industries once it is proven in the field. End users have noted two outstanding features of the dynamometer. First, the product is launched with a Straightpoint hallmark, the ability to deliver to a short lead time of within just three days. Second, it can be used when there is no anchor or dead end on the line, for example, when there is a requirement to measure a force at a specific point of a longer line. Straightpoint Director David Ayling said: “The focal point of the design process
was to create a product that was modular in construction with consistency of components so we can assemble units and ship them very quickly. This ability continues to be one of the factors that sets us apart from competition so we must launch new products in tune with the same ethos. As is the case in many industries, lifting professionals overseeing marine, offshore, towage and salvage applications are often presented with an unforeseen requirement to find out the weight of a load or the force on a wire rope or line. When a project is already underway, the speed at which force measurement technology can be delivered to a site is of paramount importance. Straightpoint can also provide customengineered mounting solutions, upon request, which Ayling anticipates being able to take from order to delivery in four weeks”.
“It is common to see such dynamometer technology in the field operating with a standard model articulating arm, but
when there is a requirement for an attachment we will tailor a solution accordingly.” The TIMH is constructed from marine grade stainless steel and is suitable for many wire rope configurations up to 80t and will, as an option, calculate lineout in metres or feet along with line speed. It is available as a wireless or cabled system utilising the HHP range of handheld displays or SWMWLC software. Ayling added: “The conception of the product followed ongoing consultation with our marine customers but as the dynamometer demonstrates its capabilities onsite, we anticipate that it will be utilised by a variety of other sectors and end user markets.”

Lifting Equipment, Deck Machinery & Winches
Purpose designed hoists are suitable for heavy duty underwater operation Lifting and handling products manufactured by the J D Neuhaus company are engineered for performance, reliability and longevity when operating in extreme environments of dirt, dust, high humidity, and even potentially explosive atmospheres.
and wave powered generation systems has also increased the potential requirements for suitable power tools that can be safely utilised underwater. Harbour locations often require underwater work, albeit not at great depths, while lakes, rivers, dams, reservoirs and bridge building operations can also have need for similar inspection, recovery or repair operations.
Some of the toughest and more unusual conditions are currently experienced by today’s underwater aquanauts. Divers are very often working alone, in conditions of variable depth water pressures and temperatures, combined with poor visibility while also battling with ocean currents. With all these problems to contend with, any tools they use need to be rugged, reliable, easy to operate and comply with the highest performance standards.
The viability of JDN hoists in the underwater environment has been demonstrated when their air operated hoists were successfully utilised for the removal and replacement of a 50 ton rudder on a fully loaded bulk carrier vessel. After breakdown during a voyage from Brazil to China, the ship was first towed to a safe mooring off the coast of Venezuela, where the rudder removal and replacement work was undertaken.
The last few decades has seen unparalleled development in the field of oil and gas exploration, particularly offshore. JDN hoists have played their part in this market, offering hoists with lift capacities from 250kg up to 100 tonnes, with specialised units of 200 tonnes lift capacity having been supplied for BOP handling. The development of subsea hoists means that underwater as well as on-deck lifting operations for a wide range of operational, maintenance and repair functions can be undertaken on jack-up rigs, semisubmersible platforms, drill ships and FPSO vessels. Even undertaking underwater pipeline and wellhead operations down to levels of 70 metres can also be considered.
Three standard air operated JDN Profi 25 tonne capacity hoists were used in conjunction for this operation, with these units being subject to full rebuild procedures after the job completion. The work was successfully undertaken at sea, without the need for cargo removal or transfer.
The proliferation of offshore wind farms
Subsequent to this exercise, the JDN company have introduced purpose designed hoists suitable for subsea operation, incorporating uprated performance and sealing features to withstand continuous underwater operation, even at depths of 70 metres. They can be supplied for either compressed air or hydraulic operation, utilising a diver-friendly pendant controller
which is compatible with constricted, gloved-hand movements. This controller is connected by standard length 2 metre hoses to the hoist which ensures the aquanaut, hoist and load are all located within a close working environment. It is designed to ensure instantaneous and sensitive regulation of the hoist movements, providing infinitely variable speed of the load hook during both the raise and lower hoist operations. The need for voice instructions to/ from a surface vessel or rig is obviated, eliminating potential delays or errors created through poor communications. Increased versatility is also provided by the fact that these hook-suspended hoists can also be safely utilised for both horizontal and oblique pulling operations when required. Overload protection is incorporated as standard to cover whatever type of underwater work is undertaken within the demanding inner space environment. The hoist construction utilises stainless steel for smaller exposed nuts and bolts together with valve heads, with grease packed covers fitted for larger fixings and wheel bearings. The remaining exposed metalwork is finished with three layers of traffic yellow RAL 1023 marine protective paint to a 300 micron dry thickness, as normally designated for offshore, salt laden operations. The fact that the hoist, diver operator and workpiece being manipulated are all retained within a regulated, visual distance ensures that maximum control and safety is maintained during difficult handling procedures.

Corrosion Services
CoMic™: an emerging solution for corrosion inhibitor detection Charles Cruickshank, CEO LUX Assure The oil and gas industry is well aware that corrosion poses one of the biggest threats to assets both onshore and offshore. It is also notoriously expensive and difficult to treat. Therefore understanding the corrosion prevention methods and technologies available to the industry are essential. When pipelines can cost up to $3million per km to replace, putting the solutions in place which prolong the lifetime of infrastructure and avoid preventable damage is extremely valuable to operators. There are a number of methods available to the industry to help mitigate corrosion. These include corrosion coupon testing, inline corrosion rate probes, computer corrosion modelling, intelligent pigs and monitoring the corrosivity of produced fluids through onshore electrochemical testing. For example, once these risks have been assessed, an effective mitigation strategy must be put in place. The use of corrosion inhibitors as a mitigator of corrosion is widely accepted and adopted throughout the industry. These inhibitors form a protective barrier on corrosion-prone surfaces and protect infrastructure from corrosive attack. However, without effective corrosion inhibitor monitoring, it is extremely difficult to determine when the optimum amount of inhibitor is being used in the system. This is important, as overdosing and underdosing can cause equally destructive problems to assets. A simple explanation of this is using the ‘Goldilocks Principle’; too much inhibitor is costly for the operator, can cause upset to the system and also the environment, but too little can increase the risk of corrosive attack. Finding the ‘just right’ amount is therefore key, and will result in enhanced system protection; with potential for significant reduction of costs, ultimately encouraging improved and informed decision making.

inhibitor reaches the ‘critical micelle concentration’ (CMC). The diagram below illustrates this: To ensure operators are effectively dosing systems, LUX Assure developed CoMic™. This is a revolutionary corrosion inhibitor
micelle detection technology that can be used in the field, to provide effective and informed management for long-term integrity of aging assets. The technology represents a new front in the fight against pipeline and process equipment corrosion with the potential for significant savings in annual chemical spend, whilst mitigating risk. CoMic™ ensures optimal corrosion protection for assets as well as process optimisation through prevention of overdosing which could cause emulsions and oil in water separation issues. Providing detailed information on corrosion inhibitor dose optimisation based on micelle detection in oilfield fluids, the technology eliminates inaccuracies which can be caused by sample degradation. Regular testing, as part of an improved corrosion management system, offers an unprecedented understanding corrosion inhibitor usage and provides significantly increased risk assurance for operators. CoMic™ provides a proactive and efficient way of managing corrosion and integrity. It does this by providing critical information allowing management to make informed engineering decisions, leading to proven results in operations, time and cost savings, and improved safety and environmental impact. CoMic™ has been deployed on multiple assets around the world, both on and offshore, with extremely positive results. LUX Assure is a UK-based company which specialises in the development of novel chemical monitoring technologies for the oil and gas industry. The company’s innovative technologies provide oil and gas operators with unique solutions for monitoring difficult-to-detect chemicals.

Microbial monitoring can pay dividends with respect to reducing the threat of corrosion
Microorganisms can influence corrosion with serious consequences, and therefore it is essential to test for their presence so early action can be taken to control them. NCIMB’s CEO, Dr Carol Phillips explains: “The method that has been most widely used in the oil and gas industry for quantifying potentially problematic microorganisms is a culture-based approach, which involves inoculating selective growth media with samples from production facilities and pipelines. This important microbiological technique has
a number of advantages – it is a relatively low cost procedure, and there is a great deal of historical data that can be used to inform the interpretation of results. For many years, this was the only approach available to the industry. However, a number of molecular techniques are now available that allow us to gather a great deal of additional data about the microbial populations in oilfield samples. For example, not all microorganisms grow easily in laboratory conditions and those that don’t grow aren’t detected using culture-based methods. The molecular biology technique qPCR quantifies targeted DNA molecules and can be used to rapidly determine the presence or absence of specific groups of microorganisms, detecting all cells present. This method gives very rapid results and can be applied to almost any type of oilfield sample.
High throughput sequencing (sometimes referred to as metagenomics) is another approach, which has revolutionised our understanding of environmental microbiology. It uses sequencing information to analyse the whole microbial population from a single sample, and identify the groups of microorganisms present, giving a comprehensive picture of the microbial ecosystem within the oilfield.
Corrosion Services
Oilfield microbiology experts NCIMB have strengthened their offering for monitoring microorganisms that influence corrosion. The company can now use a number of complementary techniques to analyse samples from oil and gas facilities.
At NCIMB we can advise on the most appropriate approach and have participated in R & D projects as well as undertaking routine analysis”.

New report highlights maintenance failings in UK manufacturing A hard-hitting new report published today has highlighted critical maintenance failings that risk the long term health and productivity of British manufacturing. The report, ‘What You Don’t Repair You Destroy’, catalogues a series of problems affecting manufacturing maintenance practices that threaten productivity, efficiency and competiveness. Published in conjunction with the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET), the report surveyed 300 engineers* in a variety of roles from manufacturing director through to maintenance engineer. Key findings include 71 per cent of engineers describing their maintenance practices as reactive or planned; 50 per cent stating that maintenance training budgets have stagnated or decreased in recent years and that the majority of maintenance engineers receive only five days training or less every year. Alastair Johnstone, Managing Director of Bosch Rexroth UK, said: “We have been concerned for some time that
maintenance practices and skills have not kept pace with advances in machine complexity.”
“This report suggests that UK manufacturing is walking a tightrope, with dated maintenance practices and budgetary constraints posing a critical risk to the long-term health of our manufacturing base. More strategic maintenance, such as condition monitoring and preventive maintenance techniques, are the exception rather than the rule.“ He continued: “This report is, of course, a snapshot. There are outstanding examples of maintenance practices in British manufacturing, you only need to look at the car industry as a prime example of that. But, it is vitally important that the rest of the industry follow suit and take a longer-term view of maintenance and its positive impact in order to safeguard the UK’s impressive productivity statistics which are, rightly, celebrated.”
The report covers keys areas of maintenance, including resource, planning and monitoring, critical machinery, obsolescence and training and includes verbatim quotes from engineers who took part in the research, which detail their concerns about the role of maintenance in manufacturing and the challenges faced on a daily basis. Ken Young, Technology Director of Manufacturing Technology Centre, commented: “I welcome this report and Bosch Rexroth’s contribution to the debate surrounding maintenance practices in UK industry. Analysis of this kind is long overdue, but its findings will come as no surprise to many of those who work in British manufacturing. This report paints a picture of maintenance practices which are reactive rather than preventive, with businesses waiting until equipment fails before it is repaired.techniques.”

Joe Orrell, Managing Director at Red Marine.
The innovative Load Test System allows all key pipelay system elements to be load tested safely and efficiently with a single, purpose built tool. This significantly reduces the time required to complete static overload testing prior to first operations and throughout the life of a pipelay system. Speaking on the intelligent solution.
Each Load Test System delivered by the engineering powerhouse is tailored to meet its client’s specific requirements. The Technip system was designed, manufactured, assembled and fully tested by the Red Marine team in only 14 weeks. Providing a test load of up to 850 tonnes, the system has already been used to complete the acceptance testing of the Skandi Africa pipelay system prior to the vessel commencing operations. “We are proud of the reputation we are building in the industry for delivering such
DBS gains internationally recognised environmental certification
Davidsons Blast Services (DBS), which provides the specialist service to the oil and gas, decommissioning and subsea industries, has successfully achieved ISO 14001 environmental management standard. The family firm secured the certification from an accredited certification body following a comprehensive audit which was undertaken alongside the company’s annual ISO 9001 Quality Management System review audit. It took 6 months to achieve ISO 14001 certification which seen the company implement energy saving initiatives, reduce the environmental impact of its operations and introduce robust monitoring processes. Certification to ISO 14001 demonstrates that DBS’s management system successfully monitors, evaluates, aligns and continuously improves its processes and operations. Each member of staff is dedicated to identifying and managing environmental risks as part of their daily operations.
“Successfully maintaining internationally recognized ISO 9001 and achieving ISO 14001 certifications is a major milestone for the company and reflects the responsibility and commitment of the DBS management team and staff. Achieving ISO 14001 certification demonstrates the innovate ways in which we work to respect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

“We are proud to have achieved both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, demonstrating that DBS is working to internationally recognised standards in its daily business, and has a commitment to continue operating at that level.” Nicola Harris, Commercial Director for DBS.
Piston air motor proves reliable at sea and in desert A Huco Dynatork piston air motor is immune to such problems. The operating principle of the product is simple. Via an integral rotary valve, air up to 100 psi is supplied to each of three pistons in turn. The free floating pistons transmit torque on start-up that can be adjusted via a pressure regulator. This results in high torque at variable low speed.
stainless steel and supplied with a helical gearbox. For 80% - 90% of its utilisation, the unit serves as a back stop when the reel is in a holding position. Unlike a DC motor in a similar application, the piston air motor will not burn out or cause overload. And thanks to its sealed body it is proving highly reliable and cost efficient in the field.
As the motor traps the compressed air within the cylinder, maximum energy conversion is assured. The design is also easily sealable so not only does it consume up to 80% less air than its vane counterpart, it is also far more reliable in hostile environments.
Air motors are used by Blue Manta to tension cable as it is lowered into the well which can be offshore or in the desert. In both environments the efficiency of the vane motor was compromised by the extreme conditions. Its design makes it very difficult to seal, exposing the unit to the ingress of salt water and sand. By the same token air is lost to the atmosphere rather than being converted into motion.
Another important design feature of the Huco Dynatork piston motors is their internal pneumatic porting. Competitors’ products have porting external to the housing and this makes the units more sensitive to temperature extremes and also prone to damage.
“As this project demonstrates, we know that with our world class engineering team, a proven supply chain and enhanced facilities, Red Marine can rapidly deliver intelligent engineering solutions that will save our clients time and money.” www.sosmagazine.biz
Bad experience with the reliability of a vane air motor prompted oil and gas well services company, Blue Manta International, to look for a better performing alternative. This type of motor is ideal for operation in ATEX environments but the existing model was proving inefficient in extreme conditions, a problem exacerbated by its inaccessibility for repair and maintenance. Both were resolved when the company switched to a Huco Dynatork piston air motor.
The model of Huco Dynatork piston motor that Blue Manta chose is manufactured in 49
