SPE Offshore Europe 2013 in Aberdeen has celebrated its 40th birthday by staging its biggest and best conference and exhibition to date.

This year’s theme was “The Next 50 Years”, representing the continuing success story of the industry in terms of future production and the strong supply chain, which was confirmed by the scale and magnitude of this year’s event.

The show also provided a moment for reflection when many of the presenters and speakers, including the Princess Royal, paid tribute to the four people who tragically lost their lives in the recent helicopter crash off Shetland.

More than 63,000 people attended the four-day show, from 3-6 September inclusive, an increase of over 25% on the 2011 event.

A record-breaking 1500 plus organisations were exhibiting in the six exhibition halls which this year covered an expanded floor space of 27,217 square metres – the equivalent of eight football pitches. Twenty-two operating companies took stands this year, the largest representation of operators ever to take part, and 262 companies were exhibiting for the first time.

The event also provided a valuable showcase for SMEs and many new young companies which had the chance to demonstrate their innovative technologies and products to an international audience.

Confirming its place as a truly global event, companies from 37 countries were represented this year and there were 33 international pavilions. Korea and Australia both hosted pavilions for the first time.

Conference chairman Malcolm Webb said that the UK oil and gas industry is the country’s greatest industrial success story in over a hundred years and this event in Aberdeen served to underline that fact. “At the biggest Offshore Europe ever, we’ve addressed

the key themes that will require industry focus to sustain activity in the UK Continental Shelf,” he said. “None of these is more important than safety.

Two weeks following the tragic events of the Sumburgh crash, we have returned continually to the issue of safety in many of the presentations, besides those sessions already dedicated to the issue. “It’s clear that by investing in our industry and being exceptional at what we do, we are creating a legacy of expertise that will continue to provide jobs and support families across Britain, including many in the host city of Aberdeen, and prosperity for this country for decades to come. “However, there are no grounds for complacency.

We must ensure that we continue to drive innovation and secure the best business environment possible for offshore oil and gas in the UK. We must continue to support our unique supply chain and, in particular, we must dedicate ourselves to continuous improvement in safety. “This year we have seen an unprecedented involvement from UK and Scottish governments a clear sign of this sector’s importance and a very positive signal for the future.

The future for this basin lies in close collaboration across our industry and with government. Offshore Europe 2013 has given us many encouraging signs that this can and will be realised.” A number of Scottish and UK ministers attended this year’s event including Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond; Chancellor George Osborne; Lord Green, UK Minister for Trade and Investment; UK Energy Minister Michael Fallon; Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism; Sajid Javid, Economic Secretary to the Treasury; Jan Panek from the European Commission and Vince Cable, UK Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills.

Rightfully so, a note of sobriety ran through the event, with respects paid to those who lost their lives in the Shetland helicopter crash, but it is through these exchanges that we learn and become a safer more productive industry.”

Although many Australian companies and territories have been represented at Offshore Europe in previous years, Australia hosted a country pavilion for the first time this year. “We found this to be a very worthwhile experience,” said pavilion organiser Mike Twiss. “We have been pleasantly surprised by the number and quality of visitors to our stand who have been relevant to our exhibitors and their products. We hope to do this in two years and next time we would like to bring some of our other Australian exhibitors closer to us to create an even bigger national presence.”

Seafood Park redevelopment plans approved A multi-million pound redevelopment of the derelict Aberdeen Seafood Park to create a new headquarters building for oil firm EnQuest has been unanimously approved by councillors.

The eight-storey. 13,600 square metre office building and 271 space multi-storey car park are to be built on the northern part of the site, close to the Union Square shopping centre.

The development will create an imposing building at the gateway to the evolving North Dee office area and help to set an architectural benchmark for future development there.

Public realm improvements, including the widening of pavements on all frontages of the block, the incorporation of natural granite slabs and benches to pavements and the planting of semi-mature hornbeam trees along the Palmerston, Raik and Stell roads will be made as part of the development. An electric vehicle charging point is also to be provided.

FUGRO PERFORMS OIL & GAS INDUSTRY’S LARGEST AUV SURVEY The largest AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) survey in the oil and gas industry is a core element of two contracts awarded to Fugro that also include metocean measurements and geohazard consultancy services for Eni East Africa. The data is being acquired for the Area 4 Rovuma basin development offshore northern Mozambique.

The challenging AUV survey is the largest ever commissioned and one of the first in this new and remote frontier area off the coast of East Africa. Fugro is providing hull-mounted reconnaissance and AUV detailed data from the development area. The data will aid the design of subsea facilities.

To assist in the routing of the 60-kilometre export pipeline, Fugro completed a regional and local geohazard assessment, including data processing and reporting, from its offices in Europe and Asia.

Covering approximately 1,440 square kilometres, the survey area stretches from the nearshore to deepwater (depths greater than 2,700 metres). The work is being carried out using one of Fugro’s newest survey vessels, the state-of-the-art MV Fugro Equator, which is equipped with hull-mounted multibeam echosounder, sub-bottom profiler, piston gravity corer and

Hardide Coatings unveil groundbreaking new technology for TSP diamonds at Offshore Europe 2013 Hardide Coatings has developed an innovative coating to extend the life and improve the performance of drilling tools operating in extremely abrasive environments. This is the first successful high performance coating for TSP (thermally stable polycrystalline) diamonds which can withstand the higher temperatures associated with TSP brazing, extreme loads and aggressive media.

This will enable a new generation of diamond-based hardfacing materials to be deployed in extremely abrasive wear and erosive conditions such as horizontal and directional drilling, as well as fracking. Improved tool performance will enhance the viability of more challenging or marginal oil and gas reserves.

Hardide Coatings CEO Philip Kirkham said: “Drilling activity is taking place in deeper and more demanding conditions than ever before and tools need protection from extreme abrasive wear and erosion that current hardfacing materials can no longer provide.

Some critical drill string components need replacement after every drilling programme, so the new coating application will reduce expensive maintenance and down time costs of drilling projects. This will in turn boost the economics of smaller and more mature oil and gas fields, such as those in the North Sea.”

The coating was developed in the company’s Oxfordshire manufacturing facility following several years of fundamental research. The production process was developed with the support of a Technology Strategy Board (TSB) ‘Smart’ grant for up to £250,000 which was awarded in January 2013. The technology is covered by new UK and international patent applications.

Hardide Coatings has signed a mutually exclusive five-year supply agreement with hardfacing specialists Cutting & Wear Resistant Developments Limited of Sheffield for its use in oil and gas applications.

Diamonds are notoriously difficult to attach and are prone to oxidation and graphitization, limiting their hardfacing use to date. Previous attempts to solve these problems have been unsuccessful due to the porosity of other coatings and their weak adhesion to the diamonds. Hardide-D overcame these hurdles with its pore-free tungsten carbide based adhesive and

protective coating which chemically bonds to diamond and has good wettability with brazing alloys.

USA COMPANIES PROVE REGENERATION CAPABILITIES OF REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCED WATER TECHNOLOGY Produced Water Absorbents Inc. (PWA) and Pride of the Hills Manufacturing Inc. (PHMI), both from Ohio, USA, have demonstrated the ability of Osorb® media technology to be regenerated after the conditioning of natural gas streams to lower the hydrocarbon dew point.

Osorb is a regenerable granular media which removes free, dispersed, emulsified and soluble hydrocarbons and oilfield chemicals from water in both on and offshore applications. The media has a high affinity for organic compounds and no affinity for water. For the conditioning of natural gas streams, Osorb has demonstrated the ability to capture heavier hydrocarbon components, thus lowering the dew point caused by those components as well as reducing the Wobbe Index, or heating value, of the stream.

Following a number of tests over the past 12 months, both companies have been working together to devise a custom built pressure vessel to retain Osorb while passing natural gas streams through the Osorb media bed in order to lower the hydrocarbon dew point of the gas stream effluent. For control instruments on well sites a lower hydrocarbon dew point is important, as pressure from slip streams off the natural gas production lines is used to operate those controls on many locations throughout the industry.

Heavier hydrocarbons frequently fall out during these control operations and accumulate on the petrochemical diaphragm, causing maintenance issues and related down time resulting in loss of revenue.

For production scenarios, which are larger scale applications, the treatment of the full natural gas stream may enable some operators to sell refined or better quality natural gas to a lower pressure transmission line, thus increasing overall oil, condensate, or gas production.

Early tests confirmed that Osorb could be fully regenerated with heat application and a nitrogen purge for hydrocarbon dew point reduction operations.

In July 2013, during further field tests at the Smith/Slater well pad test site in Hebron, Ohio, PWA and PHMI achieved appropriate temperatures in the Osorb media bed, which allowed for heavier components to desorb from the media and exit with the nitrogen purge. These heavier hydrocarbons, along with the lighter hydrocarbons such as pentane and hexane, were condensed in a series of drips upon exiting with the nitrogen purge.

Osorb works about 500% better by weight than other media on the market. Our work with PWA has opened new possibilities for a majority of the industry we serve.

The Smith/Slater well pad was selected for the extremely large hydrocarbon chains (paraffin’s) present and to provide the required information needed to engineer, design and implement a complete regenerative unit for any well-site. I believe the regeneration at the pad has been a success and the testing completed gives me the confidence to have a complete regenerative unit produced and in the field in 2014.”

As a versatile media, Osorb can be applied in a vessel canister or injected into the flow stream, then recovered and reused. Results are instantaneous and there is no significant loss of performance after multiple capture and regeneration cycles. As a result, it is an ideal tool for cost-efficient and highly effective water treatment and natural gas conditioning.

Harkand closes Veolia Marine Services acquisition Acquisition expands Harkand’s fleet and global reach with Gulf of Mexico presence, deepwater expertise and high quality assets

Harkand, the international subsea inspection, repair, maintenance and light construction group, has confirmed the acquisition of the main assets and business of Veolia Marine Services (“VMS”).

The business, to be renamed Harkand North America, will be headed by managing director Ashit ‘AJ’ Jain, who joined Harkand on the 26th of August, working together with Jim Parker, VMS’ long standing general manager, who will remain in his post and report to AJ.

The transaction is in line with the announcement of 21 May 2013.

The acquisition adds 150 onshore and offshore staff, three dynamicallypositioned multi-purpose vessels (MSV) and six work-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to Harkand’s growing workforce and fleet.

With Harkand already active in the North Sea, Asia Pacific and Africa, this acquisition expands the group’s international reach by adding a Houston operation with an established trackrecord in deepwater inspection, repair and maintenance in the Gulf of Mexico.

After the acquisition of Veolia Marine Services in August 2013, and through its organic growth initiatives, the group now employs close to 1,000 people at bases in Aberdeen in the UK, Houston in the USA, Dubai in the Middle East, Singapore and Perth in Asia Pacific, and Paris in France. The group aims to grow turnover to $1 billion in the next five years.

The assets included in the transaction are the DP2 multi-purpose support vessel Swordfish with a nine-man saturation diving system and two Triton XLS ROVs onboard; the DP3 multi-purpose support vessel Viking Poseidon, with two Triton XLS ROVs onboard; and the DP3 multipurpose support vessel Normand Pacific with two Triton XLS/XLX ROVs onboard.

This can mean recruitment drives or local acquisitions. One of the biggest challenges is building the brand and having appropriate training in place to ensure consistency in service, whilst respecting cultural differences.

Sympathetic investors who are prepared to see the long view are essential.”

Mr Swindell, who was one of the founders of Xodus, said: “Our philosophy is to get the right team and the work will follow, which is different to a number of organisations that will only invest in setting up the team after the project is secured. Our approach relies on getting the right people with a core expertise being based in the UK.”

Xodus recently agreed terms for a major new injection of equity from funds sponsored by Chiyoda Corporation, an integrated engineering contractor specialising in the onshore middle/ downstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Chiyoda acquired majority shares in Xodus Group from the previous investors, Simmons Parallel Private L.P. and Sunrise Xodus B.V.

This enables plant and instrumentation engineers to configure a complete process instrumentation hook-up that meets rigorous quality standards, and to order the fully assembled solution – including application-specific manifolds – from Parker rapidly and easily.

Parker developed its new range of MESCcompliant products as a direct result of its Enterprise Framework Agreement (EFA) with Shell. Parker’s new MESC-compliant modular mounting instrumentation system includes a comprehensive selection of 2- and 4-valve manifolds, vent and purge blocks, seal pots, filling connectors, port protectors, heating modules and environmental protection enclosures. Suitable for use with fluid or gas media, Parker’s MESC-compliant manifolds are available in a variety of 2- and 4-valve configurations to match the application.

The 2-valve manifolds feature a single isolate/vent block, with a choice of Type C, D or E, F and G configurations to suit pressure applications and level measurement on atmospheric tanks, and different types of pressure transmitter.

The G1/4 BSPP female port on every manifold features a ready fitted and pinned compression fitting; users can specify 10 mm or 3/8-inch OD Parker two ferrule A-LOK or single ferrule CPI fittings.

MESC Compliant Manifold

Parker offers a choice of single- and double-vent and purge blocks for MESCcompliant manifolds. The single-vent block is designed for static pressure applications, while the double-vent model is suitable for differential pressure applications and connects to impulse lines on standard 54 mm (2-1/8 inch) centres. All vent and purge valves have an anti-tamper feature. A filling connector

with an integral check valve is available for instrumentation systems that require purge protection but are not equipped with a vent and purge block.

For frost protection, or to maintain the temperature of the process media being measured, Parker’s MESC-compliant manifolds can incorporate a steam tracing or electrical heating block. Both types of block mount directly onto the manifold to provide very efficient heat transfer through conduction.

Rated at 50 watts, the explosion-proof electrical heating block operates directly from any voltage in the range 110 to 265 V, has an IP68 protection rating, and is ATEX certified for use in zone 1 and 21 environments. The steam tracing block is supplied with ready-fitted 10 mm or 3/8inch A-LOK or CPI compression fittings for connection to the steam line.

Other accessories in Parker’s range of MESC-compliant products include port protectors with mesh wire screens to prevent debris or insects entering outlet vents or the open ends of instrument tubing, and a seal pot for instrumentation systems that require an open seal for applications involving high temperature, toxic or corrosive media.

To accommodate different layout schemes and simplify installation, Parker offers four types of back plate for its MESCcompliant instrumentation systems, each of which bolts directly to the manifold. All four back plates feature a simple clamp assembly that allows easy mounting on a 2-inch pipe stand, and are predrilled to accept accessories such as protective enclosures.

Novel tube bender boosts productivity by 500% for leading American tubular part fabricator Rotating-head bending machine replaces two hydraulic benders A rotating-head tube bender is dramatically accelerating the production of complex parts at one of the USA’s leading tube and pipe bending fabricators.

The new Unison machine is installed at Sharpe Products of Milwaukee. Its rotating head action allows it to make left-hand and right-hand bends in one continuous cycle - doing the work of two of Sharpe›s previous hydraulic tube benders, while also speeding throughput by up to five times. This approach has major time and costsaving advantages. Operators only need to be trained to use a single type of machine, and can then be deployed wherever they are most needed within the company.

Sharpe is choosing to standardize on Unison tube benders because they have proved to provide the performance that the company needs to maintain its competitive edge, and because it has found Unison’s support service to be second to none.

Sharpe’s latest machine is a Unison 2-inch (50 mm) Breeze-Revolution tube bender that performs both lefthand and right-hand bending. The machine has two multi-stack tool heads mounted on opposite sides of a rotating frame. After bending using one or more tools on one head, the head retracts and a combination of transverse and rotational movement then positions the other head for subsequent bending operations. Changeovers between left-

hand and right-hand bending heads can be repeated as many times as needed, allowing complex shapes to be fabricated completely automatically without removing the tube or involving any other machines.

“The flexibility of this machine has to be seen to be believed,” says Sharpe’s President, Paul Krickeberg. “A lot of the parts we produce, such as exercise machine frames and architectural handrails, are manufactured from standard 1.5 to 2 inch tubing and require a mix of small and large radius rightand left-hand bends. Until now, we have used two hydraulic benders – one for right-hand bends, the other for left-hand bends – which could involve up to three separate machine cycles and easily take five or more minutes. The Unison machine creates all the bends that are needed in a single cycle, and typically in less than a minute.

"What’s more," Krickeberg adds, "by replacing the two hydraulic benders with

a single compact machine that can handle right or left bending we have gained valuable production floor space, which is always at a premium. The configuration that we ordered is capable of roll forming as well as rotary draw bending, so we can create large radius bends or tight radius bends down to 1D without changing machines.”

All Unison tube benders use precision software-controlled servomotors for movement control and feature fully automatic set-up, enabling them to be configured for new batches very quickly.

They can typically be set up in about a third of the time of a hydraulic bender and provide extremely tight control of the bending process, enabling parts to be manufactured right first time, or immediately after producing a single trial part.

Sharpe has extensive experience of Unison all-electric tube benders – it has used the company›s 3-inch and 5-inch (76 and 130 mm) machines for many of its operations for a number of years – and is extremely pleased with their performance and reliability, as well as the level of support provided by Unison.

The machines are also popular with the workshop staff, who find them easy to set up and operate.

All three Unison tube benders are connected to an automation network.

The first trial tube of every batch undergoes detailed examination by Sharpe’s quality assurance department, using a computer-based tube inspection machine. The machine compares measurements obtained from the trial part with those of the intended design, and sends any necessary correction data to the appropriate bending machine.

Sharpe also intends using the network for downloading data from its CAD systems direct to the bending machines, to further speed design-to-manufacture.

According to Paul Krickeberg, “Customers are increasingly demanding very accurate parts and very fast delivery. Unison’s springback correction system provides us with a powerful competitive advantage, by enabling us to bend to an accuracy of one tenth of a degree. We are about to ask Unison to retrofit this system to our 3-inch bender.”

Sharpe Products started up in 1990 as an architectural tube and pipe bending metalwork specialist, but its business has evolved and today the companys output is split almost equally between the architectural sector, tube and pipe parts for OEMs, and custom-fabricated assemblies. The company has 13 bending machines in total, with all-electric bending machines spanning a size range from 32 to 130 mm. Sharpe handles even larger tube and pipe sizes using hydraulic machinery resources.

Paradigm wins deluge work and expands service Paradigm Flow Services has scooped £3 million worth of contracts for its deluge integrity management services in the past 6 months. Making the announcement at Offshore Europe this week, the firm also revealed it is expanding this service to further assist major oil and gas operators with pressing asset integrity issues.

The Aberdeenshire-based company, which detects, remediates and prevents subsea and topside blockages for the oil and gas industry, is augmenting its service to help ensure deluge and firewater systems are correctly designed, engineered, tested and maintained.

By doubling its specialist in-house engineering team from 4 to 8, Paradigm now provides specific long term inspection and maintenance programmes.

This integrates with the business plans of clients for ongoing operability and compliance beyond the fundamental remediation stage, to future proof these safety critical systems.

Corrosion and marine growth is an industry-wide problem, particularly in ageing assets where the pipework can be more than 25 years old. This can restrict water flow, thin pipeline walls and also cause blockages in deluge pipes and

nozzles. Paradigm effectively tackles this issue and seeks action over reaction for industry going forward.

Rob Bain, managing director of Paradigm Flow Services, said: “Previously Paradigm was the problem fixer, returning operators to compliance when deluge systems failed. We still do that, but the issue of ongoing and recurring asset integrity issues is intensifying as North Sea assets age and needs a more strategic and proactive approach.

It is essential to meet the required level of deluge and firewater system technical integrity for preservation of life, and safety case compliance from start up to decommissioning. Without continual asset assurance, integrity issues of this nature can risk lives and also hamper operations, which in turn impact the bottom line.”

The National Hyperbaric Centre of Aberdeen has recently invested in an ‘Environmental Testing Facility’ (ETF) as it continues to develop its Testing Department.

The new, large environmental test laboratory has been installed to simulate conditions down to minus 25 Degrees Centigrade for the testing of offshore equipment, and in particular, subsea oilfield apparatus.

Testing Manager, Mike McDonald, said “The requirement to verify that critical oilfield equipment can withstand extremes of temperatures and then still function safely and efficiently is increasing requirement of many of our clients. The NHC is responding to customer requests and has decided to invest and expand its

capabilities, with even more investments on the horizon.”

Even though deep ocean temperatures do not reach the extreme cold that the new ETF can simulate, the equipment can be stored on deck in such conditions and therefore needs to be capable of withstanding, and then functioning.

“Typical subsea temperatures in the Arctic are around -2°C with a mixture of freshwater and sea water, but surface wind-chill adds to the complication of deploying any equipment, so testing with a good safety margin is sound engineering.”

NHC has just started its first ‘chilly’ project with technicians wearing full winter gear whilst working in the ‘freezer’ – even in the height of summer.

Cromarty Firth Port Authority responsible for one of the UK’s premier deep water ports The Cromarty Firth Port Authority is responsible for one of the UK’s premier deep water ports. The Port offers an internationally recognised and locally based skilled workforce, combined with deep sheltered water, no weather restrictions and access 24 hours per day 365 days per year. All of this has made the Cromarty Firth a proven destination of choice for multi-national Subsea and Drilling organisations.

Originally a Naval Port, when the Navy departed the Firth in the 1970’s, the Trust Port was officially established and steadily began to grow. Today the facilities available at the Invergordon Service Base and throughout the Firth have become recognised world-wide as a centre for excellence in IRM and Subsea fabrication, maintenance and logistics.

With dedicated sheltered deep water anchorages, a Service Base measuring over 35 acres, with 450 metres of deep water quay and dedicated facilities for Semi-Sub and Jack-Up rigs of all sizes, some of the world’s largest Drilling Companies have used the facilities in the Firth and the experienced local supply chain to meet their IRM requirements.

Chief Executive Bob Buskie said, “The

oil and gas sector is our primary industry. Currently the Sedco 712 is alongside and is about to come to the end of one of the largest maintenance, upgrade and reactivation projects that the Firth has supported.”

The figures speak for themselves. Over the last 30 years, more than 630 rigs have visited the Firth to undertake IRM works and to take advantage of the sheltered anchorage.

The Port also benefits significantly from developments taking place in the central North Sea and West of Shetland and has seen a steady growth in demand for port facilities in recent years as a direct result.

The Port recognises that investment has been a key factor in maintaining the appeal of the Cromarty Firth to the oil & gas sector. The Cromarty Firth Port Authority is a Trust Port managed by a small specialist team with an elected Board and all the money generated has to

be invested back into the port facilities.

In 2012 Cromarty Firth Port Authority invested £1million into the reactivation of 2.6 acres of land at the Invergordon Service Base, now providing much needed additional lay down project space.

Ambitious expansion plans for the Invergordon Service Base, due to get underway in early 2014, will see £20m invested and will see 9 acres reclaimed from the sea, adding much needed operational space complete with direct access to a new deep water berth.

Developments at Nigg Energy Park and Highland Deephaven have also contributed to the Cromarty Firth offering.

The Digital Multiple Echo Technique, for remaining metal thickness checks through protective coatings was pioneered by Cygnus 30 years ago. The technique, in conjunction with a single crystal probe (which ensures a straight beam passage of sound) uses three returning echoes. The 1st is ignored as it contains the coating thickness while the 2nd and 3rd echoes represent the time taken to travel through just the metal.

Protective coatings up to 20 mm thick are completely ignored, with Deep Coat mode enabled and the 2nd and 3rd echo timings

have to precisely match before a reading is displayed. This matching of the 2nd and 3rd return echoes largely eliminates spurious readings which can be a problem on instruments without this technology.

The comprehensive range of Cygnus gauges includes an ROV Mountable model, two hand-held models for commercial divers as well as an explosion proof unit for hazardous environments. The ROV Mountable gauges are available in 3 depth ratings 500, 2000 and 4000 metre. We also offer probe handlers for use with them on all types of ROVs. Rapidly growing subsea services and technology products company Cortez Subsea has secured £1.5million of contracts across its range of pipeline installation and decommissioning services following a successful start to Q3 of 2013.

The Aberdeen-based firm has completed the first phase of work on a North Sea FSPO reinforcement programme for contractor DOF Subsea.

The wins come at a time of expansion for Subsea Cortez. The company has made significant investment in new equipment and technologies in the last 12 months, in addition to a new office complex to facilitate the growth of its employee base from 20 to 40 this year.

The £1million contract, for the provision of a powered reel drive system, tensioner and personnel for umbilical and flexible riser installation, includes a second phase which is due to begin later this year.

Pacson Valves Limited began trading in 1990 having secured the UK distribution rights for Autoclave Engineers Valves and Fittings range, which complimented its own design of high quality subsea cartridge needle valves, and double block and bleed needle valves. Over the next few

Particular improvement investments include the latest 3D modelling packages, which allows for accurate modelling and design of valve components, as well as complete assemblies. Pacson Valves’ manufacturing department’s CNC machines also operate with the latest tooling technology, which enables the

Product and process compliance is monitored by the independent Quality Assurance and Quality Control departments, with the company’s own expectations of quality set to meet and exceed all relevant customer and international specifications. This is ensured through on-site facilities for hardness testing, liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspection, as well as two CMM measurement arms for highly accurate dimensional measurement of machined components. Pacson Valves’ latest acquisition in the quality segment is the capability to carry out positive material identification (PMI) of raw materials, which further satisfies its customer’s needs.

The company’s order book reflects this optimism, as since March 2010 Pacson Valves has seen its forward orders starting to rebuild, signalling the end of the recession for the business. However this doesn’t mean that Pacson Valves is without challenges in the market, as Derek continues: “There is a far higher emphasis on product validation testing, which ultimately increases the costs of the product and lead times. We have our own in-house testing facilities and can accommodate customer’s special requirements but clients don’t always appreciate that no one vendor can fully qualify their entire range just waiting for an order. Some customers also ask for material specifications which are very difficult to actually achieve in the market place. Therefore we always try to advise and guide the customer to ensure the best product is achieved, based on a relationship of mutual understanding and trust.”

Today the subsea sector of the oil and gas market is of major focus for Pacson Valves, as demonstrated by its coming presence at key industry events such as Subsea 2014 and most recently Offshore Europe 2013 in Aberdeen .

“We predominantly manufacture bespoke subsea isolation valves as currently approximately 30 per cent of world production comes from offshore and this percentage will increase over the years as more subsea fields become economically viable due to improvements in drilling technology and the like. The market for subsea isolation valves is buoyant worldwide with almost 300 Subsea Development projects in various stages. This can cause constraints within the supply chain in order to cope with a surge of requirements, however Pacson Valves has built a strong supply base over the years which allows competitive lead times,” enthuses Derek.

Belzona Polymerics Ltd Cold Solution to Hot Issues Belzona, world leader in the design and manufacture of polymer repair composites and industrial protective coatings, showcased its novel yet proven cold bonding technology for deck reinforcement at Offshore Europe Exhibition 2013.

This high performance cold curing epoxy system has already been used to bond a multitude of substrates in various industries and was perfected for offshore deck plate bonding in 2004, when it was applied to a badly deteriorated deck on a North Sea platform.

Good resistance to impact loading was achieved and considered by the independent engineering designers to be “robust enough to withstand the rigours of the laydown area operations”. Daily operations were not interrupted during the application and the passive fire protection in the machinery space below was not affected. This work has been inspected annually and now, almost 10 years on is still in perfect condition.

To demonstrate this high performance bonding technology at Offshore Europe 2013, Belzona fabricated pieces simulating the four stages of the application incorporating Perspex in place of a steel plate to show how the injected fluid material distributes between the plates, achieving full contact, thus ensuring no air entrapment. A video demonstrating this step-by-step process was also featured and is now available to view on the BelzonaTV Youtube channel.

In addition to the deck plate bonding technology, Belzona showcased its total solution for eliminating corrosion of the process vessels, by lining the vessel, forming flange faces and bonding prefabricated nozzle inserts into small bore nozzles.

STATIS software hones pressure pulse pipeline unblocking

Paradigm Flow Services has developed software to effectively model pipelines for operation of its Pipe-Pulse system, which remediates pipeline blockages using pressure pulses.

STATIS can build detailed models of pipelines or umbilicals, including components such as flexible risers, or down to the flowpath through an umbilical diver mateable connection. It allows Paradigm to determine the optimum amplitude pulse to be used, and calculate the generated stress within the pipeline walls.

Simulating client systems, STATIS is used for optimizing setup, tracking effectiveness of operations and generating reports. Comparisons can be made between the expected (modelled) response and received response in real time.

STATIS can build in a variation table to examine variations in pipe and fluid parameters. When cases are run in STATIS to animate the Pipe-Pulse effect, it can measure the pulse wave against time and also take a snapshot of the amplitude plot and pressure wave bouncing back.

Ultimately, the client’s pipeline can be animated with the predicted pressure wave passing through it in slow motion or in real time, assisting in optimization and client understanding of the Pipe-Pulse system.

GRP COMPOSITES ARE THE MATERIAL OF CHOICE FOR TOMORROW’S OFFSHORE ENCLOSURE APPLICATIONS Enclosure designs for protecting offshore equipment are evolving rapidly to combat the widespread problem of corrosion, and to meet industry demands for higher levels of safety and reliability, and new functionality. At Offshore Europe 2013, Intertec is highlighting advanced enclosure materials and fabrication techniques for offshore applications that provide solutions meeting both current and projected future trends.

Among the demands satisfied by enclosures made from Intertec’s unique GRP (glass reinforced polyester) based composite materials are superb resistance to the corrosive forces of the offshore environment, an ability to make pressurised explosion proof (Ex p) enclosures in any size - not just the small types that are commonly available - as well as the ability to withstand blast forces and jet-fires.

All oil and gas platforms have ‘hazardous areas’ where the atmosphere is potentially flammable and electrical equipment must be made explosion proof. Traditionally, such equipment is installed in protective ‘flameproof’ (or Ex d rated) enclosures.

One marked current trend offshore is a move away from flameproof cabinets towards other types of explosion proof protection such as Ex e (increased safety) or Ex p (pressurised).

This is because of numerous issues including corrosion - most Ex d enclosures are fabricated from metal - problems from the build up of condensation, and a need for routine maintenance to ensure good sealing.

Intertec’s Ex p or Ex e enclosures have an intrinsic performance advantage over similar metal enclosures for the offshore environment. This stems from the use of a composite ‘sandwich’ material with high-performance GRP sheets enclosing internal insulation, and environmental protection provided by a gelcoat surface layer. Intertec’s GRP material is almost as strong as stainless steel yet is some 75% lighter - which makes it particularly desirable for offshore use. This material offers exceptional resistance to ‘corrosion’ - it does not rust or degrade in any meaningful way, allowing maintenance-free lifecycles of 30 years. Another benefit of Intertec’s unique approach is the surface gel-coat, which is around an order of magnitude thicker than the protective paint coatings sprayed onto metal. Intertec has documented examples of enclosures and cabinets that have survived over periods of 30 to 40 years in petrochemical environments - with local atmospheres containing corrosive chemicals such as sulphuric acid.

Another key attribute of the material - compared to metal - is very high thermal resistance. Internal insulation greatly reduces the energy required to heat or cool equipment. Intertec’s composite fabrication technique also makes it easy to build enclosures that have no ‘thermal short cuts’ - conductive links between interior and exterior - avoiding cold-spots (or hot spots) that lead to condensation. This can be much more difficult to achieve for any metal-based enclosure.

The composite material can also be prepared and treated in numerous ways to deliver other useful properties for offshore applications. Enclosures can be constructed to withstand extremely high pressures such as offshore winds (240 km/h), for example, or the blast pressure of an explosion. Another possibility - and one which is expected to be subject to more regulation in the near future - is the ability to utilise different insulation materials and construction techniques to construct higher-performance fire-resistant walls to separate hazardous and non-hazardous plant areas. Intertec’s walls can even protect against rapid-temperature-rise hydrocarbon pool or ‘jet’ fires – resulting from the continuous escape of pressurised flammable media. This innovative fire-resistant enclosure technology has recently been tested and demonstrated to maintain internal temperatures below 60 degrees C for periods of two hours, for example.

For added versatility, Intertec is able to make these advanced enclosures in any size. Flameproof enclosures have been commonly used for offshore electricity power supplies for example, but one trend today is to replace local gas turbine power generating equipment with high voltage supplies cabled from the shore. The transformer and other electrical equipment required for this application can be quite large, and Intertec is able to easily provide corrosion-proof and maintenance-free

enclosures protected by Ex p or Ex e techniques for such applications.

Intertec has many years of experience of providing enclosures, cabinets and shelters for offshore applications - as well as decades of experience providing outdoor enclosures for petrochemical terminals and processing plants.
