PRIME ‘016

Kevin McCallion Head Teacher The Brooksbank School It is with immense pride and excitement that I introduce this exhibition, our annual end of year A Level show, ‘Prime 016’. The arts play an integral part in the lives of all students here at Brooksbank. We provide a full and innovative programme across a wide range of disciplines including drama, performance, music, dance, photography, design and we have been particularly successful with our visual arts programme. These disciplines are at the heart of our mission to enable students to ‘Aspire and Achieve’. Not only are our dedicated, hardworking staff committed to inspiring our students towards results that have produced the highest examination standards, but also students who develop wide-ranging skills which could lead to success in other academic subjects. Moreover, art study could help guide them to becoming outstanding individuals who, upon leaving Brooksbank, distinguish themselves in many other areas of study and subsequent careers. This exhibition illustrates everything I find remarkable about The Brooksbank School and our incredible arts staff. The seamless manner in which they work with the students to fulfil their talents and produce such a wonderful exhibition is to be celebrated.

Rachel Lumb Head of Art The Brooksbank School Welcome to our A Level show, Prime 016. We hope you enjoy the exhibition featuring all our AS and A Level Art and Photography students’ work. For the staff who have worked with these students it gives us a real sense of achievement, pride and joy to see their work on show. For some students, it is a culmination of seven years’ work and what a fabulous conclusion it is to their time at The Brooksbank School. Their creativity and vision is astounding and it takes my breath away to see the levels of interpretation, context and content inherent in the work. This evidences their individualism, the development of their skill and imagination in conjunction with the presentation of an alternative vision of their world which is original and thought provoking. It takes hard work, resilience and perseverance to complete a project from initiating it to exhibition. The transferable skills integral in this process are immense and this exhibition shows the courage and ambition of these young people. This skill and creativity doesn’t have to be the end of their artistic journey. The creative industries, which include art, graphics, music, television, film and more, are booming! Total employment in the UK creative economy rose by 5.1 per cent in 2015 to 2.9m. The arts are not just a pastime, they can be a rewarding career. The Brooksbank School acknowledges the arts and values how they can enhance learning throughout the curriculum, enabling students to access wider skill sets which are so important in the world of ever changing work. I hope their creativity, inspiration and the sense of achievement this exhibition represents is utilised in whichever career path they have chosen to pursue. “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
