CEUTA Living the Border
What is a border?
Which are the urban and social dynamics that trigger on such a complex and diverse territory? The goal of the thesis is to investigate the urban, architectural and social dynamics that occur in border cities. The research starts from analyzing which role borders and barriers have within the current political processes. At this stage, the attention was drawn to a city that during the last decades has been the core of immigration and border chronicle: CEUTA. As a matter of fact, this city is a spanish exclave in a moroccan territory and, thus, -bridge- door between Africa and Europe. Due to this reason, Ceuta is contained within 8 km of barrier which runs across all the border. In the heterogeneous urban pattern of Ceuta, obligatory step of the migratory route of thousands of people towards Europe, stands the attempt to understand what happens once a person crosses the border. This concept is not only connected to the presence of a physical fence, which divides lands belonging to two different States, but represents a more complex and radicate phenomena. Indeed, the morphological analysis underlines a new invisible border, which separates Ceuta through the formation of a discontinuous urban fabric in which the Moroccan neighborhoods are segregated by the consolidated city. Therefore, emerged that the principal contingency is been recognized as principal emergency to activate an inclusion process, which can re-connect the fragmented urban pattern to the city center. With this awareness, a site has been individuated, an urban void that, in the definition of a new neighborhood, aims on the one hand to become a social meeting point between different cultures that live in the territory and, on the other hand, an answer to the lack of housing and services. By means of the examination of the architectural and social culture in Ceuta, the project proposes a new district formed by social housing and a city market whose intention is to respond to a possible strategy that can be applied in the complex “border“ city context. Keywords: border; immigration; spatial segregation ; inclusive process ; urban reconnection; social housing ; market;

Ceuta is a heterogeneous territory, where different religions and cultures meet in a complex space. Some social housing's attempts did not have the appropriate social response because the model presented is far from the culture of the place. The residential model is re-interpreted in the light of the issues identified by the survey.

The project area is surrounded by an existing road circuit, therefore, it was chosen to put an internal route, not suitable for vehicles, which connects the staircase leading to the market to the northern entrance of the residences. In order to ensure more privacy, the entrances of the residences are placed along the axis.

RE-CYCLE ITALY The view from the highway
The industrial district of Sassuolo represents, on the international scene, an excellence in the production of ceramic products. The entire satellite activity has more than one hundred factories located in the province of Modena (Sassuolo, Fiorano, Maranello). The area was inserted within the Re-Cycle Italy project which, regarding the italian territory, provides for the scanning of all zones, both productive and not, in state of neglect. Within the entire ceramic district plays a fundamental role the system of road connections. Due to this reason, the Area of Intervention is the SS467 state highway. The highway, known as Pedemontana, is about 19 kilometers of lenght and is characterized by a strong discontinuity that was synthesized in five characteristic landscapes, of which the problems have been analyzed. The project addresses with the particular issue of the road perception from the motorist's point of view. What is more, the project aims to set up a continuous perception of the highway, while maintaining recognizable characters of the Five scenes identified. Keywords: urban planning; regeneration; state highway; perception;

OLCESE EX-COTTON MILL A process of regeneration and transformation
The study of the site is the key component which generates the project:
- Starting from an analysis of historical maps, we identified the matrixes which generated the urban fabric of Novara and this allowed us to understand that the development took place along the Roman era Axis; - The opening of the canal Quintino Sella, as a linear infrastructure, produced new rules: on the one hand the birth of big factories, on the other hand a separation between the historic town center and peripheral; - This separation was overcome by the reading of the urban fabric as polycentric, based on the presence of factories; - Focusing on the area of the ex-cotton mill Olcese the polycentric city was realized through the main axes, the Quintino Sella and the factories, that are the flows's convergence points. After a big scale reading, our interest has been focused on the area of Olcese, identifying the elements that gave unity to the master plan: urban system, park system, alignments with Olcese’s stairwells that becomes structuring and open spaces seen as a succession of rooms with different characteristics.. In light of the new urban reading as a block, the Olcese represents the block’s cornerstone in which are summarizes the main functions which coexist in the master plan. The principle used is the subtraction of the artifact pieces to facilitate the flows, the internal circulation and livability. The result of this subtraction is a gradual moving back of volumes upwards. The other building which was explored is the one that constitutes the access to the block, in particular for flows coming from the train station and stands as a new interface between the Olcese and existing cities.. Keywords: cotton mill; regeneration; open-air rooms; urban park; social housing; polycentrism;

IV La Alfama
New urban identity of the eastern edge Lisbon, Portugal 2015 team: Roberta Camaggio, Giordana Pizzinga, Simone Vailati Politecnico di Milano Architecture studio 2 supervisor: Pierfranco Galliani

LA ALFAMA Student housing and cultural center
Lisbon is shaped by seven hills. One of the elevations is the historical neighbourhood of La Alfama. La Alfama forms dens and compact environments where different activities naturally take form. The site’s surrounding the project area is a space with large buildings of great heritage value, such as the Monasteiro of São Vicente de Fora. What is more, twice a week La Feira da Ladra, an antiques market, takes place nearby the site, in a street characterize by strong slope. Located in between the parish of São Vicente de Fora and the Panteão Nacional, the site is accessed through the street Campo Santa Clara by crossing through a small but signifcant entrance gate. Once inside, a huge terrace allows the view to the city and the rio Tajo. Portugal was, actually, one of the countries most affected by the financial crisis and, since then, there was a reduction in calls for public construction and housing. Due to this reason, our program is a student housing and a pavilion which consents multiple uses. The pavilion is open to the citizens, activating the surrounding public space, and is hypogeal in order to leave the front view of the monastery and mantain the function of the miradouro. Most of the space below the terrace is occupied by the public space of the pavilion, therefore, it was added to the project area a piece of soil which was used as a open air tip. The two pieces were connected by a downhill which, in the project, is replaced by a system of stairs and ramps which better fits the typical Lisbon connection systems. CUBES IN MOTION Temporary store
Movement, transformation, innovation, dynamism.
This are the ideas which guides the concept of the temporary store. Guidelines are developed by both the analysis of the assigned brand and a unique aspect of Naples, the incessant movement. COMME des GARCONNE is a provocative, innovative and nonconformist brand. This is the reason why also the design of the brand’s stores derives from revolutionary marketing strategies. Significant in this field, is the idea of the filter store, which leaves the store hidden. With regards to all this characters, the project is a dynamic store, which can change its spatial layout every day. It can also change in different hours of the day, always surprising the visitors. UP and An adjustable lamp table DOWN
The UP and DOWN project
comes after an accurate analysis of the assigned brand, which was LADP, Launch Design Partner. This swedish label produces every kind of product, from lighting equipement to plants. Due to this reason the teamwork is focussed on designing something which is both in line with the brand and not already produced by the label. It turns out a high attention for lighting, with a lack in production of table lamps. The team attention is focused on a particularly consumers range, which includes students, designers and workers of all ages. The UP and DOWN project is an adjustable table lamp, which can also be utilized as a case. The concept borns from the typical designer need for a light under the work table. This idea is extended to every user who needs a specific kind of light. The used materials are cast iron, for the basement, and bamboo, for the structure. Furthermore, the choice of using bamboo is connected to the brand attention for natural materials. Keywords: lighting; table lamp; position's changes; cast iron; bamboo;

“TIPICO” A food corner and bar renovation
The restyling of “Tipico” Bar involved the total remaking of the sales area which was previously divided into the self service area and the bar area. The layout of the counters has remained unchanged while the shape of the latter has beenconsiderably modified in order to accommodate the functional aspect. Basic light and neutral colors, such as white, gray and beige, were chosen and they were combined with a strong materiality given by the slat in whitened oak. Black steel lines, in strong contrast with the chosen finiture, frame the space and create suspended elements which lead the imagination to the industrial landscape. The role I held during the collaboration was to develop the project from the preliminary level up to the executive level. Moreover, I dealt with the management of all the aspects concerning the building practices and relationships with the technical study of the shopping center. Finally, the brand identity was entirely made by the studio manuarino_architettura design comunicazione. More informations about this project can be fount at : http://www.manuarino.com/portfolio_page/tipico/. Keywords: interior design; restyling; food; wood; steeel;

The project "Bassano Centro" aims, through the creation of a corporate image, to provide a range of toolsin order to promote the city of Bassano del Grappa, with particular attention to the historical center. Bassano del Grappa is an incredibly charming town for all the people who visit it and live it. This is mainly due to the historical center which, together with the beauty of buildings and squares, proposes a cultural and commercial offer which makes Bassano del Grappa a stop for the tourists. For these reasons, the corporate image project aims to recount the old town and gather under one brand, "Bassano Centro", the souls and the activities of the city. The "BASSANO CENTER" project includes: - A proposal for a logo and corporate identity; - A proposal for a format for urban signage; - A proposal for merchandising; This logo proposal originates from the rediscovery of some elements of the Bassano's medieval tradition as, for instance, the Alpini bridge or traditional arcades, which are synthesized with an eye-catching and contemporary graphics. The logo and the pattern that characterizes it immediately becomes an identifier element of the old town. The whole project is aimed at developing an accessible brand from both the tourist visiting Bassano and from the citizen who finds himself involved in a social and economic networks, such as to assist the livability of the center itself. This dynamism is possible due to the elasticity of the brand which, as shown, is a manifest in all the fields of graphics, from the most conservative as in signage, to the more modern like that of social networks. Keywords: city branding; corporate image; logo; visual identity; communication;
