design guidelines @ calthorpe associates My fourth internship experience took place at Calthorpe Associates in Berkeley, California. I was a member of the design team working under Peter Calthorpe. The models below are a sample from Calthorpe’s housing type design guidebook. The models will also be used for Urban Footprint, a scenario-building analysis software from Calthorpe Analytics. Duties as a design intern at Calthorpe Associates include creating 3D models, 2D renders and illustrations, formatting documents, and creating presentations for the design team. skills used AutoCAD InDesign Photoshop Powerpoint SketchUp

design for wellness

design for wellness The Hamilton County Public Library is seeking to sell part of their existing twoblock site to a developer in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The goal of this studio course was to redesign the space around the existing library while considering the assets, constraints, and stakeholders involved in the library and downtown as a whole. My team, composed of myself and partner Macy Bieller, created a comprehensive design to establish a Wellness District in the downtown region, having the redeveloped library site serve as the wellness epicenter. This project was completed as part of the Planning Design Studio for the summer semester of 2017. skills used Illustrator InDesign Photoshop Public Speaking Writing

Existing floors were added to the North building with the outdoor track and lawn space. The intention with this was to create an identifiable landmark that would attract people into the building and up to the rooftop park. There will also be views of downtown from the track, making it a desirable space for recreation, conversation and relaxation. A recreational rock wall will span the first four floors of the building with 360 degree views of the plaza below. A skylight will be implemented at the top of the rock wall, allowing for more natural light to enter the space.

recreation rail-to-trail

recreation rail-to-trail As part of the Spring 2016 Planning Design Studio course, the studio was divided into two teams to redevelop an underutilized rail track running through the City of Cincinnati. My team created a Rail-to-Trail design, designing a plan for this railroad to become an extended fitness and recreation trail, using adjacent lots and vacant spaces for recreation and natural conservation zones. skills used Illustrator InDesign Photoshop Writing

recreation rail-to-trail This proposal for the Wasson Way Recreational Trail seeks to promote healthy living and engaging communities by way of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. The trail encompasses six different parks ranging from the Xavier University area to the Little Miami Bike Trail in Anderson Township. The actual trail runs approximately 7.6 miles and is currently owned by the Norfolk-Southern Rail Company. According to the Wasson Way Project site, approximately 100,000 people live within one mile of the trail. Each team member created their own park as part of the rail trail. My park is located closest to Xavier University, making it a destination for students. This park would also compliment the new development in the surrounding blocks, transforming the abandoned rail yard into an active space.

imagine lincoln heights

The Village of Lincoln Heights is located north of Cincinnati, Ohio along the Interstate 75 corridor. The students in this studio capstone were asked to work with the Village to create a new vision for the town--to solve the current issues of vacancy, food inaccessibility, and a growing elderly population, and decades of racial injustice. My capstone team is re-visioning Lincoln Heights with a strong core, identity, and industry that sets a standard for sustainability in the Cincinnati region, revitalizing the economy and re-branding Lincoln Heights as a community for all.

This project is in-progress and will be presented as a final capstone in April 2018.

imagine lincoln heights Analysis began with extensive geospatial research, identifying physical and programmatic connections within Lincoln Heights, and brainstorming ideas for the future of this community.

WALKABILITY MAP

The community seeks a walkable, safe neighborhood where children can walk to school and play in the public space. They also emphasized a need for proper village gateways and wayfinding, specifically oriented to pedestrian and cycle traffic, then enhancing the brand and presence of Lincoln Heights.

GATEWAY MAP Village Entry Point

imagine lincoln heights In the current stage of the project, my capstone team is focusing on the central core of Lincoln Heights. We aim to connect adjacent neighborhoods with complete streets and wayfinding design, strengthening both the physical and social connections. Lindy Avenue separates lower and upper Lincoln Heights, and we see this area as a bridge between the two communities. This park will feature unique placemaking and integrate with the existing trail network that runs along the Mill Creek, just West of the village.
