ROBERT DEVOST URBAN DESIGN PORTFOLIO

My name is Robert, but I have been nicknamed Jake since birth. I am fascinated by the evolution of the urban world. It is my aspiration to make physical planning healthier, sustainable, and more efficient. I am addicted to productivity. I put 200% effort into ideas that I am passionate about. I am fueled by music and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. I love the urban lifestyle, but am most at peace in the woods with my dog.

Welcome.

Left: additional maps to study the area of Benxi, China. The target area is highlighted with the bold outline. Over 40 buildings will be constructed for highrise residential units, shopping malls, and a retirement community. Shown are slope direction, hillshade effect, and solar radiation analysis maps for both summer & winter.

Top: three dimensional modeling of the Benxi site development. Existing buildings are shown in grey, and proposed buildings are in blue. Produced in Google Sketchup. All maps and models were used in a presentation for the client. The physical development for this site will begin in May 2015. 9

Left: various maps to display information about the development. The mixed use development, named Anhyzer Village, is a small community focused on health, nature, and community recreation. It features a disc golf park, hiking trails, and plenty of greenspace for all. 3D SketchUp images are shown below.

Existing vs. Proposed

Top: Street sections of the area include three types of roadways. Another key principle for this development was walkablility. The higher density makes walking across the village only take 15 minutes. Natural preservation was also important for this development, as only the ridge lines are developed. 13

Studying an area to consider its problems and solutions. Before constructing plans and designs, my team researched the history, infrastructure, ecology, and commerce of the neighborhood. Zoning and GIS research was involved. This project observes Columbia Tusculum, the oldest neighborhood in Cincinnati. The final proposal was presented to a board of local professionals for critique.

Left: 3D Modeling of the current layout of Columbia Square, Columbia Tusculum’s NBD. My team used Google SketchUp and Rhinoceros 5 to create a digital model, then used AutoCAD and an automatic lazercutter to cut out and shape the model. The finished product was approximately 3 ft. by 1 ft.

Top: This is the final digital model created in Google SketchUp with added details such as vegetation, people, and automobiles. The outdoor marketplace features shops, a small grocery store, restaurants, greenspace, and a parking garage. Existing buildings are transparent with proposed buildings in white. 17
