How to Become an Actor

Ever since the first thespians set foot on stage, people have been transfixed by the eternal question of how they can step into the spotlight and claim their own glory. The good news is that technology has provided us with more opportunities than ever to become the movie stars we have always wanted to be. These days, there is no one way to become an actor; there are a wide array of methods that you can use to achiever your ultimate goal. First, any prospective actor will want to dip their toe into pool and see if they're suited to the career. One of the best ways to do this is to take an acting class. Whether you're studying drama or taking a fun improv class, chances are that you will begin to develop a better understanding of what kinds of work you would like to do, as well as where you may fit into the professional puzzle. While you may love doing avant-garde theatre, for instance, you may discover that working as a commercial actor helps you to pay the bills. Actors who have a knack for funny voices may want to pursue a career in the very lucrative voiceover industry.

There are lots of different ways to explore what kind of acting you may want to do. For those who have discovered their passion for acting early in their lives, many colleges and universities offer excellent programs for studying theatre. Those who have caught the acting bug later in life need not fret; there are still plenty of ways to go after your goals. Working as a background actor—or "extra"—offers you the opportunity to log in some set time and see if you thrive in the high-pressure environment. Those living in cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta will obviously have more opportunities to partake in background performing. The best part is that you will be paid for your efforts—and a few lucky performers may even nab a shot to get vouchers for a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card. For those who don't necessarily live in an entertainment industry town, student films are a great way to gain exposure. Crafting your own sketches and putting them on video is another excellent path to help you get noticed. Although it may be a bit tricky to get started in the entertainment industry, the work is incredibly rewarding.
