CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION (LACEII) & NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS’ LabVIEW ACADEMY
To meet the industrial instrumentation needs of business, the School of Engineering have created a tailored version of the internationally recognised LabVIEW curriculum created by National Instruments (NI) - one of the world’s leading providers of software and hardware for measurement and control. The first of its kind in the UK, this programme aims to bring industry and academia closer together.
TO ADDRESS THE RISING INDUSTRY DEMAND FOR TRAINED LabVIEW SOFTWARE USERS, THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AT ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY HAS TEAMED UP WITH NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS TO CREATE the CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION & LabVIEW ACADEMY AT RGU.
LabVIEW ACADEMY & INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION at Robert Gordon University Developed by the University’s academics over a period of nearly 18 months in close collaboration with industry, this innovative programme has been designed to bridge the recognised gap between state-of the-art technology, academia and current industry requirements in the area of applied instrumentation. It will be suitable for all technological disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineering. The course consists of two phases: Phase 1 – The study of LabVIEW based instrumentation specifically designed for structured learning of LabVIEW Virtual Instrumentation software. Phase 2 – Industrial instrumentation and LabVIEW based applications.
Benefits for you as an individual We strongly believe that theoretical knowledge must go hand in hand with strong practical experience. This programme does exactly that by introducing you to the practical side of LabVIEW. Upon completion of the course, and with sufficient practice, you will have gained the necessary skills to take the Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD) exam – at no extra cost. Conducted by NI, this is a much sought professional qualification and will be a valuable addition to your CV.
Career opportunities LabVIEW is the industry-standard software for data acquisition and instrument control. More than 30,000 companies around the world use National Instruments products in industries ranging from Engineering (e.g. Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Oil & Gas etc.), to pharmaceuticals, to telecommunications. When you learn LabVIEW, you are gaining a valuable, employable skill. The CLAD exam qualification is recognised by many companies and is a reliable and valid demonstration of your skills and knowledge.
Benefits for your organisation The pressure of achieving short time to market and the reality of cost cutting mean that today’s engineer must be focused on improving the productivity of the product-development process. A LabVIEW qualification provides you with the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve this and become a valuable employee.

PHASE 1 THE STUDY OF LabVIEW BASED INSTRUMENTATION SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR STRUCTURED LEARNING OF LabVIEW VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTATION SOFTWARE. Academy Programme Overview Core 1 The LabVIEW Core 1 course introduces the LabVIEW environment, its features, dataflow programming, and common LabVIEW architectures. This course is the fastest way to become productive with LabVIEW. It prepares you to develop test and measurement, data acquisition, instrument control, data logging, and measurement analysis applications using LabVIEW. At the end of LabVIEW Core 1, you can create applications using a state machine design pattern to acquire, process, display, and store real-world data. The hands-on format of the course enables you to quickly apply skills learned in the course to your application.
You will learn to: • Use LabVIEW to create data acquisition, analysis, and display applications. • Create user interfaces with charts, graphs and buttons. • Use the programming structures and data types that exist in LabVIEW. • Use common design techniques and the state machine design pattern in your applications. • Use various editing and debugging techniques. • Create and save VIs for use as subVIs. • Read and write your data to files. • Create applications using industry-standard Compact R10 and real-time software.
