welcome to New Horizons from the Dean of Aberdeen Business School, Professor Rita Marcella
English, however there may be an opportunity to learn a second language once you are at your exchange institution. We have many years experience with European partner institutions and have developed strong links with major international employers to provide placement opportunities, which enhances your CV and future employability - something we take very seriously.
An international study exchange or work placement is a great opportunity to meet new people and experience new cultures. Students on the majority of our undergraduate degree programmes have an opportunity to study or work abroad as part of their course. Exchange programmes are an excellent forum for selfimprovement. They help to build confidence, motivation and transferable skills.
I hope that you will take the time to read this brochure carefully and that it inspires you to increase your own international experience.
Good Luck
The exchanges do not always require a second language as many courses are delivered in

Introduction What is Study Abroad with ABS? Most undergraduate programmes at Aberdeen Business School include the opportunity for a period of study abroad with one of our carefully chosen International partners. The study abroad period is an integrated part of your course - so all of the credits you achieve at our partner institution count towards your RGU degree -and without any loss of time. Most students are eligible and entry to the programme depends upon your academic record so far and your motivation to make the best of your time abroad. There are 2 major types of programmes, Erasmus and non-Erasmus.
WHY SHOULD I GO ABROAD? Going abroad to study or work could be one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of your course. The experience, new friends, a different country and its culture and language - these, and many other factors, can make it an unforgettable experience!
Erasmus is the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students and is part of the Life Long Learning Programme. With Erasmus you could study for 3-12 months in another European country and receive a grant to help you with the costs. You may be able to apply to go abroad for a minimum of 1 semester and a maximum of 2 semesters (depending upon the course you are taking), and you can take part in it even if you don’t speak a foreign language! Usually this will take place in year two or three. There is also an Erasmus programe which supports placements in Europe - grants are available and it is possible to undertake a study abroad period and a placement within the Erasmus programme. Unfortunately, the scheme is only open to students who are EU citizens or have permanent resident status.
WHERE CAN I GO? Where you go depends on the course you are studying. Each participating course has its own partner Universities in different countries. Most of the courses have more than one partner University so that you can choose which programme is most suitable for you.
International students may be able to take part in the NonErasmus programme (along with EU citizens) with our partners usually outside Europe, subject to the normal visa regulations. For this exchange there is no grant support. Many of our partners operate a fee-waiver scheme which means that you continue to pay your fees to RGU as usual (e.g. by SAAS funding or international fees), and will just pay costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence in the host country. A small number of our partners do charge fees and this is noted in the brochure. All of the partners in the non-Erasmus programme teach in English.
BA(Hons) Management
“It really is something anyone can do and should be taken up while the opportunity is there” Deborah O’Mullane BA(Hons) International Hospitality Management.
This brochure illustrates the various partners ABS has. Each partner institution has its own section to give you a clear overview of what your possibilities are and each destination has a short introduction to the country and area where the partner school is based so that you can decide where you want to have the time of your life! Currently the courses which include the opportunity for foreign study are: BA(Hons) Management with Marketing BA(Hons) Management with HRM BA(Hons) Management with Economics BA(Hons) Management with Finance BA(Hons) Retail Management BA(Hons) International Tourism Management BA(Hons) International Hospitality Management BA(Hons) International Business Management
These programmes offer you an additional educational and cultural experience which is part of your accredited qualification. It enhances your CV as many employers like to have graduates with some international experience so students who undertake such programmes will widen their employment opportunities after their course.
BA(Hons) Law and Management LLB Law BA(Hons) Communication with Public Relations BA(Hons) Media BA(Hons) Journalism BA(Hons) Events Management BA(Hons) Fashion Management Remember where you go does not always depend on the languages you speak. Many courses will be taught in English and many institutions will also offer a language course that can be followed to help you assimilate into the local community.

Cyprus is an Island that is divided into two parts, Greek and Turkish. Nicosia, the capital city, has influences from both cultures. Nicosia is located in the South of Cyprus (the Greek side) and in the middle of the country, but not too far away from beach resorts. The official language of this part of Cyprus is Greek, but English is widely used and understood. Apart from the unique places of interest left from the ancient times with memories of many generations, the present Nicosia is a dynamic metropolitan city with highly developed
infrastructure and an attractive modern look. The uniqueness of such combination makes the capital of Cyprus a place worth knowing and certainly a place worth visiting! The European University of Cyprus has a wide selection of courses to offer. This college selects its students on quality and not on numbers. International courses are all taught at campuses in Enschede and Deventer, and Hospitality Management is also taught in Apeldoorn. The campuses are equipped with computer rooms, an extensive library and restaurants. Wireless internet is available throughout the campuses enabling you to bring your laptop and work, study, search and check your email wherever you want. The Saxion campus in Deventer is situated within walking distance from the railway station. The striking architecture, designed by the Dutch architect Paul Dirks and the special location, a few minutes from the old town, the town centre and the arts centre, are all ingredients that make this an exceptional learning environment.
From 1998 untill 2001 a lot of hard work has gone into the building of a new campus in Enschede. The building is the first real ‘City campus’ in Holland. It doesn’t look like a traditional school at all. Characteristic to the building are the pavilions, which house different types of education. The new campus does not consist of just classrooms but also of study group and individual working spaces, the so-called ‘study landscape’. The city campus is situated in a quiet green part of the town, next to the city park and only a few minutes walking distance from the bus and train station and the lovely town centre. The campus has a lot to offer: restaurants, an espresso bar, sporting facilities, a job agency, shops and a theatre. These facilities all contribute to a pleasant stay.

Why work abroad? Going abroad for your placement or part of your degree is not the easiest decision to make: there are some expenses up front (visa fees, flights, insurance, academic costs etc.), it might seem daunting to leave home, family and friends, to go through the hurdles of finding your way around in a foreign country, arranging accommodation, getting used to a different way of thinking etc, and yet 91% of managers interviewed in the research conducted by a German psychologist reported that their international experience had significant positive effects on their personality and 82% said it improved their professional development. So apparently it does work out well for you. The business world is shrinking, and managers who are able to think globally are in high demand, that is why an international experience is very likely to boost your graduate career prospects and even change the way you see the world and yourself.

Stephanie Fraser – International Tourism Management
If you are considering studying abroad, just go! Go for it! You’ve nothing to lose.
“It was extremely beneficial to work and deal with so many people from different cultures and backgrounds as I feel more aware of the ever changing world that is going on around us. I have gained a new outlook on life, not to waste any opportunity that comes your way, and have made friends with people from all over the world.”
Keith McCrae – Management with Marketing The Italian Erasmus committee made sure we were always partying, going on trips and having as much fun as possible. It was almost like being on holiday at times and you had to remind yourself that you had exams to study for.
Craig Troup – Retail Management “It has been the best experience of my life and I could write a novel about it. It’s been like living an entire new life in such a short time and nothing could have prepared me for it.
Marion Rennie – International Hospitality Management I would highly recommend going on the exchange. It’s good for your CV, and it’s good for you personally. As a result of the exchange I have definitely become more confident and more aware of other cultures and people from other countries.
