Kids stand in a circle, clapping hands in choreographed patterns while singing a simple rhyming song, you know - Shimmy, Shimmy cocoa pop / Shimmy, Shimmy pow. When I began the piece my son was four months old. As a new Dad I often found myself trying to remember what being a kid was like. At the same time, perhaps with a bit less frequency, I was also thinking about how to approach the cello in a completely new way. The two thoughts merged and I started to wonder if I were a child seeing a cello for the first time what would I do? My immediate answer - I would hit and pluck in every possible way other than the normal way. Thinking about childhood, led to games, which led to clapping games, which led to the amazing way two people facing each other performing the same motions become mirrors, which is a mesmerizing thing; so I decided Hannah and Mike would be mirrors, and the cello would be their shared instrument. They would play, sing, whistle and clap (often all at the same time), and it would be hypnotic and joyful, maybe even capture some of the playful spirit and intricate physicality of the game Down Down Baby itself, or at least that was my hope! With all this in mind, each movement became a short childhood scene. In Follow the Leader the players discover their new instrument, exploring a series of sounds and imitating each other as they go. Next is a brief Daydream, a moment of repose before a spirited Singing Lesson and a beguiling Strange Dance. After a second short Daydream the piece concludes with the title track, Down Down Baby, a virtuosic romp through intricately coordinated hand gestures and interlocking rhythms. Down Down Baby was commissioned by New Morse Code and developed with the support of the Avaloch Farm Music Institute.
SET UP Place the cello on a table. Musicians should face each other. Orient the part labelled ‘Hannah’ so that the tuning pegs are on the left and the endpin on the right. Orient the part labelled ‘Mike’ so that the tuning pegs are on the right and the endpin on the left. Cello Preparation Prepare each string of the cello by placing a piece of poster putty towards the end of the fingerboard. Experiment with precise placement so as to give the string a gong-like sound. Woodblock, Desk Bell, and Foot Pedal Placement Place the woodblock in the center, roughly in front of the C-rib. The part labelled ‘Hannah’ has these bells: C-C#-D-D#-E-F. Place C-C#-D to the left of the woodblock and E -D#-F to the right of the woodblock, in that order and with the C# and D# in “black key” position so that the bells are like triangles hugging the woodblock. The part labelled ‘Mike’ has these bells: G-G#-A-A#-B-C (high). Place G-G#-A to the left of the woodblock and A#-B-C to the right. The foot pedal should be on the right side, for both Mike and Hannah parts. Picture of Setup Here is a photo of the setup, minus the foot pedals. Notice the bells arranged like a triangle and snuggled up close to the woodblock. By placing bells as close to woodblock as possible it minimizes the chances of accidentally hitting them as you play the cello.
Other Notes The cello might jostle as you play it. Use towels, blankets, or something else to stabilize the cello. Place egg carton, foam or some other soft material between the cello and table to avoid scratching or denting underside of cello as you play.

Use your left foot for this (the one that isn’t playing a foot pedal). Depending on the set-up hitting the rib with the fist jostles the cello. If this an issue substitute all ‘rib fist’ sounds with a table hit. I suggest using knockblockers on the woodblocks to guarantee a crisp and consistent woodblock sound. For non-percussionists it can be difficult to get a consistent sound with just bare hands. Thwacking a woodblock with bare hands for 20 minutes also starts to hurt! For the singing parts it is fine to sing these parts in any octave that is comfortable.
